  5000 evacuated for what turned out to be traditional ink. The person was reported to be acting suspiciously, by someone, maybe.
  
  This is more concerning than police being OTT and reversing course after the fact. Are they going to take so seriously any report of sus ink, act first and think afterwards? Plenty have swastika ink or similar, not that it is clear what is ‘far right’ or not. Obviously from this incident. They will have to take their chances if out in public or invest in bulk cover makeup.

  Has DPF been “strong armed”? I’d like to think he’d be letting us know loud and clear if that was the case. His suggestion for 15,000 more immigrants in a recent post to spite Barrant goes beyond that, I think.
  There may be a bit of self-protection going in, but frankly I think he’s genuinely upset by the attack, and he has been thinking about what he finds acceptable on his blog. And it is his blog, we are guests.

      DPF has nothing to be “strong-armed” over. He runs a forum for a conversation held by ordinary citizens that is mostly civil. It is not his fault there are lefty agitators who come to KB looking to churn trouble. KB contributors are equally not responsible for this current bunch in government but NZ is still a democracy and, as yet, we are still allowed to voice dissent with how they choose to run the country. That should not cause a conversation of free speech between voters to be hampered or shut down.

Seems like my partner may have been correct all along.
About a year ago, we had this guy move into the house over the road. Eventhogh we’ve never actually spoken to him, my partner suspected that from the way he looks and dresses, he was probaly one of those Neo Nazi Alt-White Extremists. On Friday afternoon, our suspicions were pretty much confirmed. Just as we were preparing to observe the 2 minutes silence, we heard him start up his leaf blower.

I constantly read about DARPA funding rounds and battery improvement programs in places like the USA, Japan, an even Europe’s quest for solid state batteries. I would have thought setting up a tech industry here that could focus on the same thing would be a slam dunk for the Greens. But I can’t find any mention of priority funding for advanced battery tech anywhere in their climate change mitigation discussions? Considering their beloved solar is basically useless without it for most people, I would have thought a local battery solution (as well as the export earning potential) would the relatively small cost of setting something like this up. We certainly have the expertise here:

  Batteries are very poor for power storage: only giving back somewhere around 50-60% of the power used to charge them. Far better to use the power immediately.
  
  For example, use the solar PV to heat water in hot water cylinders so that the hot water is available later. That is over 90% efficient due to good insulation in modern hot water cylinders.

    That depends on the battery, to a certain extent. It’s not unrealistic to think that we will unlock some of that bottom 20%/top 20% of capacity as we understand more about how the chemistry actually works in different batteries. That will, over time, change the equation for batteries, especially when you can slurp power from the grid when it’s cheap and use it later as stored energy when things might be more expensive.
    
    The big problem is the green movement wants renewable use and electric transportation to increase, but object to hydro and wind on environmental grounds. That basically leaves us with residential PV as our only means of improving resilience and that won’t work without batteries. They need to pick a side here, they can’t have it both ways.
    
    But yes, there is much to be said for using PV more wisely.
    
    PS: DPF, I would more than welcome a weekly tech roundup post on Kiwiblog, I think many people would enjoy that.

    I’ve been looking at this. Typically our battery bank is full by about 10:30 a.m. in the summer, so there’s a lot of energy unharvested throughout the rest of the day. It makes sense for us to move to solar for our water heating (currently gas) and maybe put in a couple of night-store heaters.

    The real irony is solar hot water is by far and away cheaper and more more efficient than ‘PV to hot water’.
    But it did not win the bullshit wars and the govt (both national and local level) seemed hell bent on ruining it with mountains of red tape and academics making utterly idiotic demands of how it must be utilised.
    A case study in a clusterfuck.
    There were other factors as well like half arsed plumbers not knowing how to install it etc.
    
    Just a wee factoid, solar thermal is up to 70% efficient, PV = roughly 14%

That probably sums up the hunters’ position pretty well, except those hunting in tight bush when a semi-auto could be an advantage.

But what about the gun enthusiast?

We have thousands of people in NZ who are hobby shooters who like semi-autos and military guns. They operate semi-autos responsibly and keep them locked up safely and would never dream of using them in an illegal fashion.

The reason we need to use principles when making laws is that they cut through all the emotion that leads to poor law making.

What is the principle here?

As a comparison, let’s look at car enthusiasts who end up with more car than they need.

Nobody needs a high performance vehicle like a Corvette or a WRX or whatever for its functional purpose of providing transport. A more sedate nanna car would do it.

Yet I bet over 90% of people owning those high performance vehicles commit crimes with them, even if those crimes are just speeding and driving with excessive risk.

More importantly, likely somewhere around 100 out of our annual road toll is caused by drivers with too much car losing control. Yet only 2 or so deaths a year (50 amortised over 25 years) are caused by too much semi-auto.

Or, if you prefer, 50 deaths from semi-autos in the last 25 years and 2500 from high performance vehicles.

Surely too-much-car is 50x as much problem as semi-auto guns, yet you don’t even need a valid driver’s license to buy a high performance vehicle.

“Don’t need semi-autos” is not a principle, because we are allowed much more dangerous things we “don’t need”, including vehicles, smoking, stairs in houses etc.

So, again, what is the principle?

To be clear, though I only have an A-Cat and have no interest in owning a semi-auto, I am pro having E-Cat and cleaning up the broken MSSA definition to make all semi-auto centrefires E-Cat.

Nobody with an E-Cat license has every gone on a shooting spree.

      You’re not usually this dense MMA. cmm’s argument is nothing to do with gun regulation meaning we’re less able to regulate for vehicle safety.
      
      His case is that the rationale for gun regulation applies equally in logic, but is not applied equally in fact, to the rationale for regulating other products and activities which can and do kill people.
      
      He’s calling for clarity, coherence and consistency of reasoning in public policy; and if he does so until the cows come home it will still avail him nothing

  Man this would be a good point except that car manufacturers realised that when competition cars were homologated for road use, it meant that Joe Sixpack could buy performance previously only found in supercars for a fraction of the price. So they decided to limit what the cars could produce – the infamous ‘Gentlemen’s Agreement’. There was an inherent acceptance of potential social harm.
  
  Now we have cars that can detect pedestrians or collisions and override drivers. How long until guns can detect people-shaped targets and disable a trigger?

  Moderation and Strike system was working fine. The majority of the offenders who were winding people up with retarded observations and trolling have been banned.
  IMO the continued moderation of every comment unless pre-approved is a waste of time and resources. Now that DPF has more moderators they could be looking at flagged comments a lot quicker and removing them without putting the blog at risk.
  Comments against the flow of the blog are quickly ridiculed and downvoted anyway.

It looks like Police were warned about the Christchurch shooter by a fellow member of the gun club he shot at, but did nothing.

Breidahl says he took his concerns to the local arms officer at the Dunedin Police Station.

“She dismissed me straight away,” he says. “She told me they were ‘a bunch of funny folk’ down at the club and ‘it’s just who they were.’”

Vietnamese authorities have ordered monks at a popular Buddhist pagoda to stop “soul summoning” and “bad karma eviction” ceremonies after an investigation found the rituals were a scam.

Nasska’s investigation would’ve taken less than a minute, and wouldn’t have cost Vietnamese taxpayers anything!

Tens of thousands of worshippers have been paying the 18th-century Ba Vang pagoda between 1 million and several hundred million dong ($60 to $19,000) to have their bad karma vanquished, according to the state-run Lao Dong newspaper.

Monks at the pagoda teach that all illnesses and misfortune result from bad deeds in previous lives. Three times a month they “summon wandering souls” and “remove bad karma”. During these two-day ceremonies, they demand donations, supposedly representing good deeds, to help cure bad karma and make up for supposed bad deeds in previous lives. Such rituals have been going on for years, but the practice has drawn unfavourable attention because the amounts demanded by the monks soared to the point where they began taking payments by bank transfers and in instalments.

So no one noticed it was a scam – until the monks upgraded to bank transfers and instalments?!

Peters emerged from a brief meeting with Erdogan and struck a conciliatory tone, saying that he had not raised at the meeting some of the most controversial comments the Turkish leader has made at rallies.
He also said that he had not asked Erdogan to stop showing the videos.

“I did not ask that question because I felt that I did not have to ask it, because they are not doing that anymore,” Peters told reporters after attending a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

“The New Zealand deputy Prime Minister came with a delegation and we had a chance to talk before coming here. We discussed and agreed upon what we should do,” Erdogan told supporters in Konya without elaborating.

1) Does not Erdogan’s comment to supporters actually imply Winston Peter’s approval of screening the video – “… we had a chance to talk before coming here. We discussed and agreed upon what we should do”? and in the same assembly screen the video?

2) What does Erdogan announce to supporters as his reason for showing the video. What context does he give it, when he threatens to send ANZAC’s grandchildren home in coffins, and why is that not reported?

In Stuff today reported that 28 back office staff have left Parliamentary Services in the last 2=3 months. Som 700 staff in total, of which two thirds work for MPs. Based on those numbers, annualised, looking at nearly half the back office staff could leave this year. Probably won’t be that many, but still an alarming and expensive turnover.

The article mentions as factors new CEO, a mild restructuring and the bullying review. Doubt that is the whole story – something is very wrong in that organisation.

Wonder how many MPs staff have resigned lately, these would be on top of the back office staff leaving.

Dont think NZ doesnt have the same dark forces in its political elites as in other countries. We do. Dark forces that can cripple a persons business and livelihood if they dont accede to certain demands.

Kiwis I have spoken to recently don’t look at the global picture and assume that bad stuff happens somewhere else and not here in paradise. Apart from the fact that it’s such a hollow word (you’re not actually helping by ‘standing in solidarity’), to me it’s a word I associate with left wing movements, unionism and communism/socialism.

I think its important to note to many on her that it isn’t straight white males that are persecuted by PC culture. One of the few things pc fascists aren’t fully bigotted over is who to persecute. They persecute anyone that pushes against anything to do with their fascist ideology. Some examples:

People are persecuted for their ideology. True far right racists\homophobes etc take pride in those labels. Its ironic because those that follow that hateful ideology actually see their world in terms of race, sex orientation and gender – not people that oppose diversity politics.

And this is where Jacinda’s logic behind her “new anti-nuclear moment” thinking of banning oil and gas exploration is wrong.

As the responses to the events of Christchurch has shown, Jacinda’s real “anti-nuclear” moment is her handling of that tragedy by bringing people and of different cultures and religious beliefs together (and putting a lid on tensions and anger).

If she was smart she could be there on the world stage helping to bring peace to people living with conflict simply by using her empathy and communication skills (imagine if she went to Turkey instead of Winston and had a dialogue with Erdogan, who clearly was impressed with her according to his US media interview) now that would be something everyone could get in behind and support (and certainly not this nonsensical O&G ban which experts have demonstrated will slow NZ’s economy, make us more dependent on imported energy and actually raise emissions …. as this article shows gas in the middle east is helping bring them together, so why is NZ demonising gas – it’s ridiculous, unnecessary and a distraction to things that matter the most – global peace and harmony between cultures etc).

The other day I mentioned my Bangladeshi business neighbours and how the women didn’t wear head scarves even on the Friday of mourning, and a few people suggested I should go ask them if they were Muslim.
Apart from being none of my business, I wonder how they would react to a 6ft tall tattooed white male with a No4 haircut asking them if they were Muslim, given the recent events?
I think I will pass on that. I prefer passing the time of the morning with them without furtive sideways glances, thanks.

I am currently visiting my son and his wife with 4 little girls under 8 in Denmark Western Australia.
He decided he would wear his Reindeer jumper out and about yesterday.
I must admit it looks a little bemusing.
Whilst standing near the car, A car comes along and a local hippy winds down the window and screams;
“Piss off you smelly arsed loser”
He calmy tells us after the event, that he had encountered this fashionista expert whilst refuelling last year, she was licking the windscreen like a wiper.
He is the local boat inspector and conducts drivers licence tests.
One wonders, Who will be the smelly arsed loser if she happens to come cross him professionally.
I wonder is she is from the left or right or just completely fried her brain, hard to tell.
Society is very diverse, great we can laugh at ourselves.

Terrorist manifesto banned

This assumes a degree of expertise and integrity that some may doubt all reporters, researchers and academics have.

It is possible that a Herald item this morning headlined “Christchurch mosque shootings: Hidden in plain sight: How alleged Christchurch gunman was radicalised“ contains three major mistakes – comparing their comments to those of the Washington Post – although the law now apparently precludes any average reader from detailing or attempting to correct such errors.

This is particularly dangerous when some “journalists” express opinions that indicate they should more honestly attempt to become “politicians” than remain so-called “journalists”.

But, related to that, what does the Chief Censor’s mention of reporters signify?
Surely they may not now report any manifesto content, as that is distributing it, and anything else is opinion, so not factual reportage.

And too, I wonder –
Is any politician, say for example Golriz Ghahraman, Marama Davidson or Winston Peters, if quoting or referencing the manifesto, also faced with up to 14 years in prison or a $10,000 fine?
And will the author of the manifesto, himself be able to quote from it or allude to any of its contents, which may infringe his legal rights?

  This fucking stupid. Define a “range of people”? I am a teacher, I read part of it so I could get an understanding of the psychology of the person who committed this act. This is useful when discussing this with school kids who are asking questions. So, what do I do now? Go for re-education and have my memory wiped? Apply for permission to read it again?   Article about it at the Herald. Apparently the event was supposed to be a vigil but was an extremist political rally blaming whites. Sharon Hawke, of Ngāti Whātua Orakei, said hatred existed in New Zealand. “White hatred is its foundation.” Hard to see how this isn’t extremist commentary. This rally appears to be inciting violence and hate against one racial group based on the crime of a single individual if it was done to any other ethnic group it would be called racism.

      That’s why the Manifesto should be available freely. It shows the deluded weird personal views and drive of the offender. NZ as a whole has nothing to blame itself for–he stands alone. Sure it can be offensive in parts by advocating violence but it may cause greater harm not allowing people to see that the offender does not speak for them but is a loner.

I think that Ardern needs to stand Davis down until he is investigated for links to extremist groups and hate speech.

LOL. Is it just me or are the police extremely naive in all matters internet. Fancy just sticking up a simple form on public internet with a submit button and not expecting it to be abused?
Then there was the ridiculous email wanting some overseas website to hand over their private user data. What next sending money in good faith to Nigerian scammers?
You really have to ask yourself why the police were not taking advice on this if they don’t have qualified staff in house to deal with it properly. And I would be very surprised if they don’t have qualified staff inhouse, so begs the question what the hell is going on. Is everyone qualified on holiday?

Having spent the last week or so reflecting on the terrorist attack, I’ve decided I’m not going to change how I behave at all. I still think Ardern and this government are extremely out of their depth and inept, showing empathy like Ardern has done over the last week changes nothing. Anyone with a heart in a leadership position would do the same, yes even Winston. I’m a white, gun owning male, who is 33 years old and leans heavily to the right side of politics. I don’t want mass migration of any ethnicity in this country, at least not until our infrastructure can handle it. I do not want any books to be removed from sale, or free speech to be impeded in any way, I just want to be left alone to live my own life. I’m also not going to feel guilt about a lone wolf wanker, who decided to shoot up alot of kiwis, yes I feel compassion and sadness for those people, but in no way do I feel partially responsible. And I’m also not going to change my principles or views on many other issues. I’m still going to read and write on blogs and news sites, I’m still going to vehemently stand against left wing indoctrination in our schools and institutions, I’m still going to fight for smaller less intrusive governments at state and local level and I still believe that personal responsibility and personal pride is the only way you can genuinely get ahead in life. I’m not changing, I’m not going to apologize for my beliefs, and I’m not going to be dictated too by a bunch of incompetent twats who I completely disagree with. If you dont like anyway of that, I could not give a toss, live and let live. Rant over.

  Good rant. I also am not going to apologise for my beliefs. I am also consistent in my beliefs – unlike our left leaning friends who are consistently selective in expressing outrage. Were they outraged when around 300 Christians were massacred in Nigeria recently (and by peace loving Muslim terrorists) – I don’t think so. Were they outraged just a few years ago when a nasty song was doing the rounds on social media encouraging the rape of John Key’s daughter – I don’t think so. Or condemning the F*** John Key chants with nazi type salute at a Dotcom rally – I don’t think so. Whilst I don’t wish to demean this tragedy, I am somewhat tired of the left leaning media portraying the PM as a cross between Princess Di and Mother Theresa and enabling the government to milk it for all its worth.

Interestingly me being more right minded than most of my friends they have sought me to ask for answers, fortunately for me being involved with meme and internet culture for so long i can tell everyone in detail the reasoning’s behind everything. IE: I can pick the serious parts from the troll parts of Brantons manifesto, something the media and journalists can not do.

    Now i know for sure Scott Hamilton is no expert on anything. People who cheer for the Auckland blues are “Blues supremacists” if people identify with Humans rather than chimps they are “Human Supremacists”.
    
    The naive idealism from people like Scott is he thinks people are “Blank slates” that can be molded from slabs of clay and shaped into what he wants. Him and his fellow cohorts seem to think the whole world is becoming multi-ethnic, this is simply not the case.
    
    China and India – 2 billion people with almost zero ethnic diversity. The only countries getting fed the multi-ethnic spoon are predominately countries with higher ethnic Europeans.
    
    These are just all common facts that care nothing for feelings.
    
    The only “Supremacists” i see i call them what they are … “Diversity Supremacists” and i would debate Scott that these are 40X more dangerous people than White Supremacists.

    The different interpretations appearing in comments suggest strongly that the few comments about violence, being the reason for the ban, miss the main thesis of a megalomaniac revolutionary.
    How can the document convict him if it is suppressed. With it one body as representative should be sufficient: without, several more may be needed. Add the video a brief semi-closed trial could be over in a day. Is justice served by extending suffering when adequate evidence is available? Should lawyers be allowed to argue the evidential quality of the video? Three strikes could be proved based on that.
