Nostradamus

Australians will vote on 18 May. So here’s a timely article focusing on Australia (and America): Socialism appeals to the young but many don’t know what it means.

The question asked:

New polling by the United States Studies Centre and YouGov reveals considerable confusion and ignorance about socialism in both Australia and the United States. We asked: “What is your understanding of the term socialism?” Respondents could provide any answer they liked, in their own words.

The survey results:

Twenty-eight per cent of Australians fell at the first hurdle, with “don’t know”, “unsure” or “no clue” responses. Another 13 per cent of Australians gave answers indicating they understand socialism as being sociable (eg “spending time with friends”, “talking with people”). Just 59 per cent offered a response that was even close to any conventional definition of socialism (greater equality, public control of the means of production, etc). Younger Australians are more likely to offer “don’t know” or the “being sociable” classes of responses. [the article notes that younger Australians are “more likely to support Labor — and especially the Greens — than older Australians”.]

People who think socialism is “spending time with friends” probably don’t realise that, when a politician promises you something, you’ll generally end up paying for it through taxes.

The official Kiwibuild website has had a makeover.
And stopped reporting some numbers, and also no longer reports the ‘as at’ date.

It now reports (as of today):

10,356 – Contracted and committed to build
74 – Homes completed
64 – Homeowners (58 as at 11 March)

Interestingly, these are almost the same numbers reported as at 11 March. But missing are the previously reported numbers for –

267 – Building (under construction)
47,853 – Registered interest
301 – Eligible buyers

But it now has an aspirational new slogan, so all good then.

“Reigniting the dream of home ownership for New Zealanders”

Good luck measuring progress against that,

The MSM and assorted lefties will be very disappointed that the unpleasant chap who abused Muslims outside the Christchurch mosque was one Daniel Nicholas Tuapawa. He won’t fit into their narrative of NZ’s ubiquitous white supremacy, will he! How disappointing for the snowflakes who will no doubt be queuing up for counselling as I type.

Is it just as well that Israel Folau does not advocate burying homosexuals in the ground sufficient to render them totally mobile and throw stones at them until they are dead or Joe Biden, George Clooney, Elton John and Ellen DeGeneres would urge people to no longer support or play football.

The Israel Folau debate continues with players and administrators and media pundits falling over themselves to pile on condemnation.

But here is the thing. He just posted something from the bible. He didn’t make it up himself, it’s what the Bible says about fornicators and drunkards and yes homosexuals.

So the questions are many. Is free speech now dead?
Is religious freedom now dead?
Is it now compulsory for all New Zealanders to heartily approve of homosexuality? Is dissent no longer allowed? Can we no longer speak our mind?

I would have thought that the principle of freedom is far more important than enforced conformity.

Prior to the passing of the homosexual marriage bill most NZers were against it. That’s why there was no referendum on the issue. It’s sponsor Kevin Hague knew it had the support only of a minority.

But homosexuality is being foisted on us in every area of life, even rugby players must conform. It’s an attack on our freedoms. Freedom of speech and freedom of conscience and freedom to hold to our deepest views.

Is this attack on our freedom really what we want?

  Israel Folau has no restriction on his freedom of speech. He can say, write, copy and paste whatever he wants.
  If, however, he has an employment contract that puts restrictions on how he uses social media (which is very common with professional sports-people) then he will reap what he decides to sow.

  Israel Folou is free to follow his religion and speak his mind.
  
  And his employer – the Australian Rugby Union – has been free to end his contract because his off-field antics have damaged their business and reputation.
  
  Can you explain why you regard Israel’s decision to torpedo his rugby career as an “attack on our freedom”? His freedom to act and speak have clearly not been curtailed.
  
  Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences.

    Should a work contract be able to stop an employee expressing their political, religious, cultural or sexual orientation or beliefs in social media on their own time in their private capacity. They even showed a video of Falau speaking at church does his employer also control this? Will this be a standard clause in all work contracts? Can any employer require this? And so since the culture wars are happening on line are those with a job are not allowed to express a belief. The political discourse will (and does) belong to the unemployed, students, retired, and those whose viewpoints align with the current approved thinking. The Falau takedown is a witchhunt and now includes anyone who even liked his post. Turn the other cheek. He’s welcome to say I’m going to burn in hell and I reserve the right to say that his religious beliefs are nonsense.

      Sports teams and sponsors have contracts to protect themselves against damage from sportsmen. And spouting divisive rhetoric is clearly damaging.
      
      It’s the same reason why he can’t tell the world that the products produced by the team sponsors are crap.

    As someone lucky enough to tick quite a few of Israel’s deadly sin list, I am not offended.
    
    I am offended that the media has chosen to focus on one minor part of the post he made and the head of qantas, an openly gay man, has made it his mission to extract public punishment for Folau yet qantas still happily fly to Brunei where they haave decided to execute gays. Is that a double standard or just a nasty little bastard picking a fight he can win.

  Surely Knott has hit the nail on the head. Can an employment contract render null and void your freedom of speech, what you say on social media in your own time?
  
  It’s a wider issue than homosexuality. If you are a prominent sportsman should your views be muzzled because they are not pc?
  
  I would like to suggest freedom of speech is a big issue that affects everyone.
  
  Even Kiwiblog which used to be a magnificent vehicle for free speech is suffering because of “moderation”.
  
  We need to rediscover the importance of freedom of speech and fight for it.

    I would expect that all professional sports contracts contain clauses that place restrictions on behaviour when athletes are off the field.
    
    Professional sport is a commercial business. Behaviour that divides and offends is bad for business, and bad for the sponsors.

  Not a fact, he is in Australia, but you could bet London to a brick he doesn’t book a double grunter with his soul mate in Cairo, Dubai, Brunei, Saudi, and I could go on.
  He is all about money and power.
  He turns a blind eye when money is involved.
  A decade ago, I had two Lesbians on a tour, they demanded a double in Cairo.
  The hotel manager refused on the grounds it would put his career and life in jeopardy, and mine for requesting it, they did not care, it was all about them.
  I was buggered and just wanted to finish the standoff.
  Gave up my double with wife for a twin and didn’t change rooming list.
  No even a thank you.
  There is a lot of selfishness involved in my experience, and total ignorance how parts of the world are.

  C’mon downtickers! QANTAS is the major sponsor of the Wallabies. Its CEO Alan Joyce is openly gay, not an issue in itself, but when put in the context of QANTAS having stridently supported changes to Australia’s same sex marriage laws and now levering Rugby Australia to cut ties with Folau it takes on a significance of its own. Neither QANTAS not Rugby Australia comes out of this situation well. Folau has every right to express his opinion whether one agrees with it or not!

    I like it that Israel Folau is not a relativist, so hand across the aisle to him.
    
    Sadly, such lists can make us think divine justice is arbitrary and so we clutch our pearls when we find ourselves on the list. How dare Israel Folau and his awful God say that! GK Chesteron said, when people grow old in the world they want mercy, but children, refreshingly, always want justice.
    
    The list of damnable sins needs some context. God is absolute perfect love and, logically, that means that no imperfection can be in God. Therefore, we simply cannot be within God’s holiness when we are not perfect; divine love symbolised by divine fire (Holy Spirit at Pentecost) is experienced by the imperfect as a punishing fire.
    
    Think of it this way, suddenly right this minute, you are to be a track athlete for the olympic games and the first event is tomorrow. Now likely that is a crazy idea and you know it. But strangely we think good people like ourselves, with our ‘mistakes’, would fit right into heaven and God’s holiness. Others tough it out and deny the idea of absolute perfection (God) to be a nonsense, and then, incoherently it seems, argue for justice, good government and fairness on blogs wanting the right side to win in life’s political gambles.
    
    So in light of all that, no doubt the list is way too short. In fact no one can not be on the list, for even the just man sins five times a day.
    
    So it’s Easter next week and its Christ who makes it possible for us to enter into divine love eternally. Because heaven is the hardest thing, like the crazy idea of finding yourself with a spot on the olympics, and the easiest thing, because Christ turned up for us and won on our behalf. I guess the simple word of thanks is a good start.

According to sources, I can confirm that squads of armed police (up to x4) are now investigating “Hate ™ Speech in Christchurch
I have heard that they arrive with ipads and red notebooks and stagger themselves along citizen’s driveways in an intimidating fashion.

It has been pointed out that some of these squads would appear to be in violation of their code of conduct, as they are roaming citizen’s property, entering side gates and walking around sections banging on windows.

According to the law they must leave immediately if there is no one home and leave a calling card.

This is all so upsetting. On April 29th, and for the EIGHTH TIME THIS YEAR, our junior Doctors are going on strike again – and it will be for 5 DAYS!! It will be the longest strike our Doctors have ever been on 🙁 As my partner said this morning, if this govermint had any sense they would make Shane Jones the Health Minister.

  Is that claim of “8th strike by junior doctors this year” credible, Maggie (without questioning your own veracity)? A few questions:
  1. Where can one find a detailed list of these strikes?
  2. How many patients have died as a result of these strikes? (Or is that an ‘improper’ question from someone outside the medical fraternity?)
  3. What action has been taken / is being taken by Ardern’s Government to fix this strike problem (without her Government giving in to excessive demands by militant junior doctors)?

    Hiyaa CG. Yup, this will be the 8th time they’ve gone on strike this year although the previous strikes were only for 48 hours. Never the less the DHBS have remained unmoved. Yesterday the NZDRA sent out a statement saying – ‘unfortunately, any opportunity that the gap between the last strike and this one might have allowed the DHBS to rethink thier provocative bargaining has not been taken up’.
    This willbe the longest strike of doctors NZ has ever seen 🙁

  They were going on strike and stopped it but that still put all the snr doctors, management and other specialities through the wringer to plan for it and contact patients.
  then they had to belay it all.
  and now it starts again.
  
  The reason isn’t the doctors but Deborah Powell the union leader.
  The same one who’s hubby and herself earns $1 million a year into their own company from the doctors union fees…….
  
  The worm is turning, in Auckland there is another group of Doctors who won’t have a bar of her…
  
  Plus the snr doctors are talking about how the specialist training period might need to go from 4 yrs to 6 to qualify.
  
  That’s so the doctors can actually get enough experience under their belt to be doctors.
  40hrs weeks on soft runs don’t qualify.

    I respect DPF and his right to administer his blog as he wishes. I also appreciate that the blog moderators have lives outside Kiwiblog, so they can’t sit here all day clearing the comments queue.
    
    Nevertheless, I might gracefully withdraw from commenting here (maybe apart from the occasional comment) until it’s possible to have interactive discussions again, instead of posting the equivalent of penpal letters to each other. All the best folks.

  I agree. Better to have moderation for the first 20 comments by a user, then only retrospective bans or suspensions after that. That means people cannot create new accounts and post filth, but everyone with a track record of behaving themselves is unaffected.

  The timing of some comments appearing, stuffs up the nesting system too.
  The “Recent Comment” can not cope either, as it other comments are slotted in between ones already read. Maybe too be helpful the “recent comments” could be increased to more than the current 15.
  
  Becoming too much of a hassle to read, and has become a disappointing blog to follow.
  
  I have tried to make it work, as in the past I have enjoyed following Kiwiblog and making the occasional comment, but the time of moderation is often too long, particularly if some facts on certain issues take so long to be passed.
  So in effect it has become censorious by the delay.
  
  I do give credit to DPF for allowing things through, however one can see NZ lynch mobs and threats as how media, can whistle up others in an avalanche of radio, twitter, paper quotes, that can affect business’s jobs of others, when they are in the open.
  
  Thanks DPF, as I am sure you are scratching your head, at the changes in NZ, and how to allow good communication, warts, rats and all to flow, so that people may think and learn, as different information sources, make people more knowledgeable and reasonable.

I was told I would not be moderated as I use my name, not only to KB but online as well.
Last two comments were moderated, one had the words white supremisist, it maybe handy if it is known what words trigger moderation.
Happy to be moderated but looks like it is going down the road of Australian Blogs, free speech is about to disappear before your eyes.
KB is in between a rock and a hard place, NZ is becoming the Russia or China of the south seas with free speech at an unstoppable speed. Where will the gulags and re-education centres be set up, Chathams a good place, they were completely cleansed many many years ago!

      They know how I feel as do you guys and gals, I just feel it is really important to not lose sight of the fact that we do have one of the most dishonest governments that I have seen in my life time.
      
      The blatant arrogance and ignorance emanting from the “what’s in it for wynston” party as well as the total distain for the public at large by the two non male green mps, without sanction from either their leader or the pr girl I might add, plus the total disregard for electoral process has gotten me a tad grumpy.

The Auckland uni maori students association says it wants to work with the university to address concerns about growing white supremacy. A couple of students have said they feel so frightened they cannot continue their studies and are considering dropping out. Stating since the mosque attacks threats and offensive graffiti has been found on campus.
The VC said they were dealing with two incidents in one of their schools.
Why would maori students feel targeted after the attack on muslim?

A lot of people here are complaining about the way Mr Farrar is running his blog with respect to the unseemly delay while their comments are being moderated.
Maybe they could control their output as they wish by setting up their own blog instead of trying to take over Kiwiblog.

yes I have lost interest in this blog
I thought it was more of a right wing blog.
But I’ve realised thaa its more liberal.
The Alexa ratings have dropped from 475 in March to 547 in April
That is a huge drop.

Why do you keep putting the rent up every year?
Your mortggae costs have fallen a lot.
Every time my g/f gets a wage rise, it is eaten up by you rent rises.

  We put the rent up because we can. Sometimes each 6 months.

  a) Because our other costs increase year on year
  b) Because why not? Any supplier of goods or services will generally charge the maximum that the market can bear.
  c) You want charitable or social housing? Look elsewhere. Tenants are a pension plan, nothing more, nothing less.

  RTA requirements haven’t
  Petrol prices haven’t
  Property manager fees haven’t
  
  All of the above have increased. As a tenant you’re pretty likely to be being subsidised by your landlord even after rent rises.

    Most landlords don’t do much repair and maintenance work.
    Property managers fees are a percentage so no increase there.

      Most landlords certainly do carry out R&M, some do not.
      
      PM fees have increased with the outlawing of letting fees.
      
      Rates, insurance and expenses? – No, thought not.
      That insulation isn’t fee, the new heating that will be required won’t be free either. Nor will the compulsory extractor fans if they’re not already in situ.
      
      Really simple – increase LL’s costs watch rents go up.

      c) I don’t have tenants because they’re too much trouble but I’ve increased my rates by $15-$25 (some are actually $35) a night above last year’s rates.

      Landlords will be doing even less R&M if ring-fencing of rental losses comes in. Bill currently in Select Committee with a start date of 1 April 2019. Yes, 2019.
      
      Essential R&M and mandatory compliance only. Oh, and rent rises of course.

        You do wonder where this idea of hard done to tenants comes from.
        
        80% of all Tenancy Tribunal cases are due to rent arrears. So if you assume a 50/50 (being very generous) split on the remaining 10% that means 90% of all cases that reach the tribunal are taken by landlords against tenants.

      Add new insulation requirements that mean that even if the house is up to the old standard it has to be topped up. New heating requiremets i.e. heat pumps, Ventilation fans in bathrooms, no provision for shower domes.
      
      Have to remove a logburner with a nearly new hwc because of new air regs by the airport. Planes have been dropping carbon in the air for years but we can’t have a logfire no more.
      
      It just goes on and on so we charge more and you the taxpayer will top them up.

    Health and safety, bad tenancy rulings, tenants no longer responsible for damage, tenants are arseholes often, taxes haven’t come down, brightline test,. All good reasons to charge more.

Today’s edition of the Northern Advocate contains a letter to the editor worth reading. The correspondent has read “the End of Life Choice Bill, Justice Select Committee Report on the opposing submissions they heard during the process.”

Needless to say he is disillusioned with the callous & compassion free natures of some of the people he shares oxygen with. Examples:

“Suffering is an important part of the human experience.”

“Suffering enhances a person’s life teaching them gratitude, resilience & hope”.

“Personal autonomy must be balanced with the needs of other people & the wider community”.

I find it difficult to disagree with his summation that “we owe it to ourselves, our family, nurses & doctors”, the cleaners, visitors, the community generally to suffer as we die……… the more hideously we suffer the greater the contribution to all those others.”

I’ve accessed the on-line submissions to the bill. As I wade through the filth I’ll update on the opinions of some of Godaddled who “really, really” care.

This was 9.3 times the average annual earnings (€39,753) for the same period. In Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, the most expensive area in the State, the median price (€541, 667) paid for a house was nearly 14 times average earnings.

The price-income multiple is a standard measure of affordability worldwide. In the past an “affordable” home was considered to be three to four times a person’s income. The Central Bank’s mortgage restrictions, which limit people to borrowing 3½ times their income, reflect this measure of affordability.
