Just looking through some 1960’s Mad magazines and all the current ‘problems’ are pretty much run of the mill even back then with some claiming that the Earth would be a desert in only a few years.
US Presidents running scared of impeachment back then.
Wars and all manner of disasters would become the ordinary..
And here we re some 50+ years later with the doomsayers claiming the same old same old.

  Today it is the new secular religious nutters , The Earth lovers , telling us the same thing.
  
  What is different is back then there weren’t that many sandwich board nutters and we all politely sniggered at them .Today there’s hundreds of thousands , they’re in govt , in NGO’s , churches, businesses etc and instead of sniggering our gubmints are robbing us of our wealth to transfer to them and want to rejig the economy so that we are all turned into penitents .

  In the past there have been environmental problems that have been dealt with and some have been left to fester. It’s unlikely that any of us here commenting will be greatly affected by them in our lifetimes but I strongly urge those of you with an open mind look at the scientific evidence rather than the political implications of said evidence and act with good conscience.

    It is doubtful whether action by men have had any real effect on the weather.
    
    It is also doubtful whether there is anything man can do to make any meaningful alterations to the weather to come.
    
    Somehow it has now been decided that all the dinosaur farts, bison dumps, volcanic activity over the past millennium along with solar activity have had little impact compared to what man has managed to do over less than 200 years…..

        I did report the teacher, via very polite one-on-one with the headmaster – after I approached the teacher who told me to Go Away (not uttered quite that way). The most the headmaster would agree was that it was “unfortunate”. Remembering quite well my schooldays of many decades ago, I thought the more I tried to fix this, the more my son would suffer for it – and not necessarily just with teachers but with other classmates. That said, after he left, although we are both alumni, that school is history in terms of support and funding. Maybe I chickened out, but I didn’t want my son to have trouble because of my opinions.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announces there will be no CGT, “not because I don’t believe in it, but because I don’t believe New Zealanders do”.

She got that from the two month vacuum she called a “debate” in which she didn’t even participate?

However, a diluted CGT was what the populace had been prepared for and now Ardern could be accused of being a show pony too distracted by international adulation to perform the tough tasks at home.

Or is this simply necessary pragmatism needed to shore up the mortar of MMP in order to prevent any shifting in the bricks of the coalition that could destabilise the whole building?

Most probably the latter is the case. However, her signalling that a capital gains tax won’t happen under her watch could mean that she might be thinking of decamping from the leadership before the next election to pursue a glittering career, possibly at the United Nations. – stuff

  You are correct. There was no debate. A debate would have required the government to specify its response to the TWG in the form of options, including the Government’s preferred option. Then led a genuine engagement.

    The cost in political capital going forward may have been too high. Grant R. has been conspicuously absent. Someone surely told the govt that it would take 2-3 years to bring the CGT to fruition? IRD’s accounting is all integrated with assessment. Staff and public preparation were needed. The law drafting alone would be a years work. The changes to be were massive.

  As far as I can fathom, the Government did not state any final position on CGT – what of the recommendations they would introduce or not.
  
  So what does Ardern mean “New Zealanders did not believe in it”, when she did not actually offer any official and final proposal.

    From the NZ Herald account of Ms Ardern’s statement condemning the Sri Lankan attacks I see no mention of the word ‘Christian’, a surprising omission if indeed the Herald quote is full and accurate- after all the attacks were primarily aimed at Christian churches and not places of worship in general in general, and most of the dead will have been Christians. I contrast this to the many public statements as PM she made after the Christchurch attacks in which she made frequent and specific reference, quite accurately, to the victims as ‘Muslims’.
    
    I find her selectivity significant and disturbing.

    It is the inconsistency that is the issue.
    
    A month of all white men are evil murderers with hand wringing apologies to muslims and no end of mention about how wonderful muslims and their faith is and how we can now all enjoy fetid goat kebabs on every street corner because of the ‘diversity’ they bring to our Christian based democracy.
    
    Did I miss her mention of the 100+ Christians slaughtered by muslims in Nigeria and now this atrocity, once again, against Christians.
    
    It is cross wearing season at the moment, the peak of ‘get ones cross out of the garage and drag it around the park’ season. Nothing from Ardern.
    
    I am clear in my mind; they are not one of us, they never can be and never will be. And, frankly, I don’t want muslims to be part of my world.
    
    Muslims have a completely different mindset to Christianity and all that it stands for.
    
    They are here because we have welfare, they are here to turn New Zealand in shitholeistan whence they came while turning us into allah acolytes.

        Christians are just as important as Muslims except Christians don’t murder people because of their beliefs anymore.
        Even though I have a good friend who happens to be Muslim and a descent man, I too believe in general terms we cannot mix. Not my fault or the fault of Christians; it’s Muslim ideals.
        My mate often says “In my culture…….” to which I reply “Welcome to New Zealand and my culture” Especially when I order a beer.

    If the PM’s comments and actions are now beyond criticism (even ‘moderated’ criticism on KB!) we are reaching a difficult point in our kind of society which purports to encourage lively political debate.
    
    Your suggestion that some people “attack” the PM employs an emotionally-loaded word that is entirely appropriate to describe the dreadful events in Sri Lanka but, I suggest, an exaggeration in the context of your comment about the PM.
    
    I’m in agreement with Nukuleka, for example, that it’s surprising for Ms Ardern to comment on the Sri Lankan attacks without any mention of the intended targets being Christians. If that’s deemed to be an “attack” on the PM, I’m saddened, but I suggest that it might be better to take the matter up with Ms Ardern herself or her speech-writers.

Based on her comments of the passed couple of months, I don’t believe Ardern actually understands CGT beyond the Buzzword “fairness”.

Given that “Fairness” was debunked pretty early in the process the very thought of debating and discussing CGT with people more knowledgeable than herself (IE everyone) terrified her.

Just a thought….

Auckland Transport (that font on congestion) recently announced their intention to make the Auckland CBD car free.

Doesn’t that decision make the multi-billion Dollar Inner city rail loop obsolete.
If there are no private vehicles in the CBD then it’s very easy and cheap to implement far more flexible bus and tram solutions.

Thoughts?

      Bear in mind that one of the “Planners” articles of faith is “city centre first”. They are against zoning in ways that will enable people to live their lives traveling between dispersed locations. Not only do they want to force you to use their train set by making road travel impossibly congested; they want to force you to travel to the CBD by incrementally depriving you of other options for work and shopping.
      
      A truly enlightened (scientific, even) analysis would conclude that dispersion has been the best thing that ever happened to cities. Contemporary urban planning is a true intellectual inheritor of the “planning” tradition that Hayek absolutely nailed in the 20th century. The kind of mind that believes in prescriptive planning, is the kind of mind that will impose the WRONG “solutions” anyway.

  Logical. But we need to understand that the religion we are up against has “rails” as its core article of faith. And this is a global faith. Economists and rational analysts can jump up and down pointing out again and again that buses are the most logical solution in XYZ situation, and it will fall on deaf ears.
  
  Ironically the rail-based systems that are adopted (whether trams or trains) tend to reduce overall PT mode share. They are so expensive that they crowd out the budget for the buses that most of the city needs; and they require “transfers” from feeder-service buses, which introduces another time loss and potential system breakdown, into the individual’s travel-decision equation.
  
  “Park and Ride” really requires parking buildings as the space has a high opportunity cost (which the green activists never include as a “negative externality” for trains, note); but parking buildings would represent another added cost. What the public are never told is that the cost per person-km of travel on these rail-centric PT systems is seldom lower than that of a solo driver with a medium-size car. If PT fares were expected to cover the “share of the costs” that motorists do cover for themselves, PT fares would be more costly than the best options for running your own car (a small, economical, depreciated used but still-reliable one). The subsidy of PT fares is easily 80%+ of the total cost.
  
  On the other hand, “roads” (which are the only part of the costs of automobility that are “subsidized”) are only about 5% of the whole-system cost of automobility. Motorists have to pay for their own car; PT riders don’t have to contribute a cent to the capital cost of the trains or the rails, or the stations, or the park-and-ride spaces. Not do they contribute any more than half to the energy costs, maintenance, wages, and other operating costs; whereas motorists pay their own way for all this too.
  
  Both systems typically cost around 50 cents per person-km of travel (in average cities, not exceptional ones like Hong Kong); but the motorist pays their own 50 cents while the PT rider pays 10 cents and gets 40 cents subsidized. I am a born, bred and educated Aucklander, but these parasites do not speak for me or most Aucklanders and are an embarrassment to most Aucklanders. I am referring to the SkyPath Trust and their assorted group of hangers on, that includes:
Morrisons (owners of Infratil);
KPMG;
A planning consultant (who read for his BPlan degree at Auckland with my brother); and
An engineering consultancy.
This type of story makes me angry, because in days gone by, these types of people would have been told to get lost, because they are entitled to NOTHING!!!
The parasites listed above are claiming $1.6million for plans for SkyPath (read link below), they are entitled to nothing and should be told to Foxtrot Oscar or Papa Oscar off.

There was never a contract between Auckland City or NZTA for these parasites to provide anything. Woodward is a contempory of mine at Auckland, so he should know in Contract Law there must be 3 elements of a contract – an offer, acceptance and consideration – I don’t see any of that here.

These parasites are the very reason people hold Auckland and Aucklanders in contempt (and they do not speak for me).

SkyPath is a vanity project that adds nothing to Auckland, it will be an under used, expensive white elephant of a scheme that will cost a significant amount of money to construct, operate and maintain.
SkyPath Trust, Morrisons and KPMG came up with the notion of doing this scheme as a PFI. As someone who has worked on more PFI/PPP schemes abroad than NZ has done, I can attest that a back of an envelope calculation tells you this scheme is not bankable. So, the only way to finance and operate it is for the taxpayer to pay for it. This is where this project is obscene, why should New Zealanders from Kaitaia to Stewart Island pay for an Auckland vanity project promoted by no more than 20 to 50 people?

Michael Stiassny and Phil Twyford, if you authorise payment of any money to this group, every taxpayer in New Zealand should be entitled to sue you for reimbursement of the money paid.

As for Woodward, if you a s ingle cent out of this, I will issue you with an invoice on behalf of Aucklanders for the $1million plus for the waste of money trial bus service that was the Kowhai Connector. You see Woodward is a Transport Consultant, he advocated and worked with people from Auckland Transport in 2012/13 to operate a trial bus service until September 2018 in the Warkworth/Matakana/Leigh areas. The bus service cost over $250k per annum to operate, was funded entirely by Auckland Transport and achieved less than a 10% fare box recovery. So, Woodward you owe Auckland more than $1million for the operation of a bus service for which there was only ever limited demand. As you will not pay for the loses incurred by Aucklanders for the bus service you promoted, Taxpayers have every right to tell you to crawl back under your rock.

Further , it would be a favour to the rest of New Zealand if, you, your SkyPath Trust and assorted hangers do a Foxtrot Oscar because you are entitled to six tenths of nothing!!!

        In fact the usage numbers are exaggerated out of all proportion to reality.
        
        The numbers I saw anticipated by year 5 there would be 11,000 people per day using the thing.
        
        Given they plan to charge for access and the fact that the weather is not too great 140 days out of 365 in Auckland, I can’t see it being used as much as the numbers used.
        
        The other little under report facet of this whole farce is that back in 1980 the Auckland Harbour Bridge Authority ran a transport pick up and delivery service for cyclists between Stafford Park and Westhaven. Most of those who used the service were university students. Within a year of starting the service, it folded because of lack of patronage and interest.

        Tallman, you cannot both complain that the proposed housing will be hideous and that it won’t be low-cost. If it is intended to be bought by rich people it will have to be attractive and good quality because rich people don’t buy ugly low-quality housing. Trying to make it low-cost, on the other hand, pretty much guarantees ugly uniformity. Which do you want?
        
        In any case, you don’t need to build new low-cost housing in order to ensure that affordable housing becomes available. It may feel counterintuitive, but consider:
        
        If you have five buyers and four sellers, the richest buyer buys the best house, the second richest buys the second best, etc and the poorest buyer loses the bidding to the second poorest and doesn’t get a house at all.
        
        Now add another seller. It is still the case that the richest buyer will buy the best house, the second richest will buy the second best, etc. But now the poorest buyer will be able to buy the fifth house, because the seller has no other buyer.
        That outcome is the same whether the new house is better or worse than any of the original four.
        
        Thus, 350 new dwellings at Shelly Bay means 350 more buyers able to buy a home in Wellington, without needing to make the new builds themselves “affordable”.

    I would hope that any applicant who had “radical” ideas would be denied a firearms license regardless of race, religion or colour.
    
    In our area, the screening for a FAL is rigorous with referees being contacted, cohabiters interviewed and storage inspected. I have no issues with any of that but until recently we have had little cause for concern.
    
    The licensing of tarrant just does not ring true with me and I would have preferred that a full investigation was completed before the idiotic legislation that ardern needed to virtue signal how wondrous she is was delayed until then.

Why would Alibaba put an international freight centre in a place with nil international links. The only reason would be if Shane has decided to throw a bunch of government money into the mix.

  You raise an interesting challenge there. I’m not sure that Shane can be dumber than he looks. And in case someone thinks I am insulting his physiognomy – Why yes, yes I am. Freedom of speech while we still have it. (Plus, my youngest grandchild thinks I look like Peppa’s dad 🙂 Being a pot, I have licence to address the kettle!)

IMO, the biggest current threat to our national wellbeing and freedoms is our media. I agree with Hooton. Our media are a branch of this current govt., not and independent 4th estate.
