    Looking at current gun law legislation, none of it does anything to change what occurred in CHC.
    The government will pay a fortune to legally abiding citizens, the gangs, drug cartels,and crims will carry on unabated.
    I pissed myself laughing when I read some details will be reported in a book held by a dealer, a book, surely in this age a central register of all guns owned isn’t impossible.
    Victorian law, police know what rifles or guns I own. And all ammunition I buy. They inspect my gun cupboard and turn up unannounced.
    These current amendments are pissing in the wind.
    No one knows who has what guns in NZ and never will.
    My advice, start arming police, all police, give them same powers Australian police have search wise.
    I own guns for vermin on farm and putting sheep out of their misery.
    I am happy for police to come anytime they like, I abide by the law.
    I suspect that many individuals in NZ as in Australia flout the law.
    Either police have power to fight this or just roll over and wait for the next tragedy.
    The last thing you want is licensed gun dealers offside and being pushed financially.
    I found it just unexcuseable that police took the time they did to shut this guy down in CHC, it will happen again and nothing in these amendments will stop it.
    Goodies will get a heap of cash, baddies will sit on cache for down the road.

  Simple short term fix – calculate what a Teachers hours are multiply by minimum wage rate, deduct gross amount already paid over period of error(Another Nova Pay stuff up) and pay out the difference today. I am available to the Ministry for common sense advice at the same rate as Cullen. I can also provide my own calculator in th package, SARC

  Anything’s possible given the current climate. There was a radio play years ago (before Yes Minister) about a couple oh Whitehall bureaucrats who got fed up with being nasty to people and wanted to help people. They set up an Ombudsman’s office and did it within the black letter of the law and even the auditors had to give them a clean bill of health. The top mandarins went right back through old laws to try and trip them up and found a law written in Norman-French that forbade the setting up of an ombudsman’s office, the penalty being the rack. The two bureaucrats were informed of this and told a bit of WD40 would soon get the rack operational again. This was all far fetched.
  The British Government told the media not to publish April Fool Brexit stories to stop panic buying of toilet paper etc. Seems in this case there was a very real ancient law covering this still on the books with the penalty of having ribs crushed.

  Its really quite simple May is a total liar and incompetent, she says the UK will leave but deviously and behind the scenes acts to prevent leaving as she probably has an EU job waiting when she resigns. There is doubt if the extension to April 12 is legal as the referendum reflected the judgment of the UK highest court – the voters and the Govt accepted the result because it was binding. March 29 was leave day deal or no deal and whatever May or parliament legislates is subordinate to the decision of the referendum already made and accepted.

    This has little to do with PM May. The UK decided on Brexit, the EU were given the formal withdrawal and don’t like it. The withdrawal stands. Terms depend on what favours the EU wants to grant: plainly none.
    It’s right for Britain to exit the controllers of Brussels. Freedom is worth it but there will be a period of adjustment required. I expect within a few months there will be a general accommodation and life will be largely normal again. The EU need to trade too.
    
    It’s foolish to imagine that would there not be a brief period of strangeness at this stage. Officials need to talk to each other about short term practicalities. At present the UK Parliament looks like a bunch of Chicken Littles: the sky is not falling, it will still be in place tomorrow.

One very unfunny and activist “comedian” wrote a stupid virtue signalling opinion piece several years ago , the media then rehashed it on the back of an appalling tragedy , and senior NZ rugby types show they’re a bunch of PC cucks.

  Rugby NZ have already shown that with their massive push for “equality” in rugby.
  
  I see hockey is also going down the gurgler with coaches getting in trouble for being too demanding.
  
  People want to watch sports to see amazing feats of athletic ability, not equality.
  
  Soon we will see All Blacks having to lose to Fiji every now and then to be “fair”.

  – Then the Highlanders (“named after the early Scottish settlers in the lower South Island, so that harks back to colonialism”)

  – The All Blacks (“RACIST!!!”)
  – The All Whites (“RACIST!!!”)
  – The Black Sticks (“RACIST!!! And sexually suggestive with the whole ‘stick’ thing going on”)
  – The White Ferns (“RACIST!!!”)
  – The Blackjacks Bowls teams (“RACIST!!! And related to gambling”)
  
  Then there’ll be all the placenames, statues, street names, etc. that SOMEBODY, SOMEWHERE is offended by … a good number of our towns are probably named after people associated with the colonial settlers, or some famous General somewhere that somebody will decide is no longer a suitable role model for these enlightened times.

  They change the name because of some misguided and lunatic PC appeasement then I end nearly fifty years of rugby support – as a player, coach, team manager, fund-raiser and supporter.   And it’s bigger than just the Crusaders. If the Crusaders have to change their name what about other uses of the word. The word Crusade means the holy wars, but it is also defined as
  1. lead or take part in a vigorous campaign for social, political, or religious change.
  eg. “a crusading stance on poverty”

    The word ‘crusade’ has the same etymology as ‘croissant’. Literally it means ‘marked with the Cross’.
    
    A Crusader is someone who is marked with the Cross.
    
    Without the actions of the Crusaders, (Thomas Madden, a medievalist is the best expert scholar on the Crusades), all Europe would have become Islamic territory.
    
    So I am proud to have been born free because of that history, including the Battle of Lepanto, which sadly no anglophile educated child would learn about.

      As any historian of the crusades would tell you, the Crusades were ultimately for a noble end, to reclaim land that Muslims took by force, and stop the taking of more. They were ultimately defensive. Sadly many people, especially a lot of Muslims, have been convinced of the popular modern myth (and it is a genuine myth) that the crusades were some kind of Christian imperialistic conquest.

  The word “Crusades” only became common in the mid 1700’s to describe the holy wars between Catholics and Muslims between 1000 and 1300. So it should be offensive to anyone, anywhere at all. The the two words that should be banned are Catholic and Muslim if this stupidity were to be carried forward to its ultimate outcome.
  Also, the middle east “crusades” were not the ONLY “crusades”. There was the Wendish “crusade”, the Albigenesian “crusade” and the Bosnian “crusade”.

When did Jones become First Citizen of the Provinces and who (was stupid enough) to annoy Jones as First Citizen of the Provinces.

Let’s get some matters straight:
1. Jones is a loud mouth blow hard;
2. Outside of Whanarei & the Far North, he has a limited knowledge and understanding of Provincial NZ; and
3. If he is First Citizen of the Provinces why does he not listen and support provincial and district councils instead of trying to buy votes with a slush fund provided by the NZ taxpayer?

Jones is a lot of things, but he is not First Citizen of the Provinces.

You have to feel sorry for the residents of the Franz Josef District who are being told by their Regional Govt and local MP, – tough, we’re not going to help you and stop playing politics, because we don’t care about you.

Yet on the other hand, because in the current political climate it is expedient for the Minister of Police to tell Gun Shop owners, “we’re not going to buy unsold banned guns from you. You’re going to have to sell them back to your suppliers.” Like that is going to happen – when in every case the guns have been bought from an overseas supplier on a special import licence, and recognizing the supplier is under no obligation to buy back stock sold to NZ. So, how many gun shops are going to go out of business because the govt at a stroke of a pen chose to make illegal what had always been a legal trade.

Both these events shows we have a government who are happy to pick winners and losers for reasons of expediency. That makes them NO government for NZ or New Zealanders.

  Anyone who thinks ” Fuck the gun owners , not my issue ” is very sadly mistaken because the buy back and subsequent changes ie Register are going to cost the tax payer a king’s ransom. But that won’t matter to this lot , it’s always OPM.

All they will do is cherry pick those that say gunz-is-evil give-them-hugz.

There was no need for this urgency. Urgency can be addresses by the Order of COuncil (or whatever its called) to bridge the gap for proper decision making.

All that has happened is that they have used emotion to subvert normal democratic processes.

This is indeed the lowest point of NZ democracy ever.

For the record I have no interests in owning semi-automatic rifles or high capacity shotguns that these law changes apply to.

  I have not used a gun since serving in UK army as my National Service and was in my regimental rifle team. Apart from a an air-gun which my son wanted in his youth.
  I would point out that guns do not kill people except when a human pulls the trigger or handles it carelessly.
  Currently and since those early days [ 60 plus years ago] I have no interest in the matter.

The hijab is a sign of female oppression. Many females in the muslim world protest against its enforcement and face great personal risk for doing so.

When Jacinda Ardern wore it after the Christchurch massacre, in her culture, it signalled empathy with muslim victims.

However, the muslim women and men in many of the pics were quickly sidelined, and a semiotic narrative inferring a kind of ‘sainthood’ was applied to her image, and shamelessly disseminated on social media.

In my opinion it was white-guilt turned to political advantage, and infantalised the victims.

Her image, transmitted onto the side of a building in Saudi Arabia in their culture signalled to the muslim world that Jacinda Ardern, self-professed feminist and upholder of womens’ rights, was endorsing ‘submission’ to Islam. But in our culture, it was interpreted as showing her beatific credentials. Naive.

Jacinda Ardern voted against having the compulsory Christian prayer in Parliament. Yet made a ‘captain’s call’ to not only play the Islamic call to prayer, but to broadcast it on the radio.

The emotional response was understandable. But it symbolises to me, the way that emotion and cold reason can work against each other.

It also shows how it can be exploited for political gain.

In this spirit, I would ask the current administration to resile from Hasty legislation which sets a dangerous precedent of allowing emotion to make laws. We are not at war.

a) hasty legislation about fire-arms
b) hasty legislation about ‘hate’ speech.
c) culturally ignorant patronising of muslims.
d) politically expedient vilifying of people who may disagree with you by inferring they are white supremacist sympathisers.

  Lee C – I have always thought that it was a great mistake to broadcast the Muslim call to prayer across our nation. In that prayer it explicitly states that “Mohammed is the messenger of God”. Now if Mohammed is the messenger of God then we should all become Muslim.

  How can you label adversaries in a war as “victims”.
  
  Any soldier who is killed in the attempt to kill another is certainly not a victim and unless my limited knowledge of history has deserted me, the “allies” lost the Gallipoli campaign so it is our “dead” that could more corrrectly call “victims” if that word must be used.
  
  “Virtue signalling” is the new “sport” and it would appear that the RSA, of which I am a member, is not immune to it.
  
  However, in fairness, there were quite a few Turks killed in that campaign so maybe it is time to honour the dead on both sides. One hundred years has passed so maybe a little consideration can be given this year.

    In the first world war the Arabs were mostly fighting on the side of the Anzacs against the Ottomans. So there were Moslems on both sides of the conflict.
    
    Given the Turks are magnanimous to allow the Anzac commemorations in their country, I don’t really have a problem with it.

NZers had nothing to do with the appalling terrorist act. NZers have nothing to be ashamed about in connection with that attack. NZers should not in any way be punished or penalized because of that attack. We should instead be proud of our country and its traditions of fair play and build on what our forebears have created instead if allowing people with extreme ideas to try to divide and destroy our nation.   The ratchets that are used to set precedents into our laws with facts that have great feelings, that should not be offended.
  
  The education, academia, political, media system is geared, not to facts, but feelings.
  
  The sad (feelings) fact, is that many people died in an event in Christchurch, so factually it all adds up that something must be done, so it will not happen again.

I never been ruminating on the appalling prospect of hate speech legislation being introduced to this country.

For what it’s worth, here is my two cents.

3 years ago, my brother was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer, and after a long period of treatment is now in remission. The treatment had some very nasty side effects which he is still dealing with, but looks to be making a complete recovery.

After his diagnosis, I got checked and was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer as well, but at a much earlier stage which was able to be cured with one surgery, no chemo or radiotherapy, all in all, a far less debilitating treatment.

Why is this relevant? Think of hate as cancer. In Cancer, early detection is the key to a great outcome. By legislating against Hate Speech, you make it more difficult to identify and help those down that path.

When you suppress speech, you do not suppress the thinking behind it, and you do not address their concerns, which may be valid, but due to misinformation which can best be countered early. If you do not, then pressure builds, and explodes. Then it’s too late.

It is so sad to read the Newsroom story about a Chinese property developer (Mr Deng) being allowed to ride roughshod over the residents of Malolo Island in Fiji, prepared to destroy the environment all to make a quick buck. We spent a week there back in 2017 and it was really beautiful.

I mean we see it with the youth protests lately, great that some of them.got out and expressed their views, but, when you have kindergarten children protesting, you know this is a fear that their parents and teachers are installing I to them.

Am interested to hear two very conflicting comments this morning on the radio – different stations.
On one was two Senior Muslims each making their views quite known that we must seriously take Muslims into consideration in whatever we do.
On the other station it was made clear that all was quiet in the Muslim world in New Zealand and that no comment had been raised this being entirely contradictory to what I heard elsewhere.
Now the Crusader will have to change their name as Stupid Tew says so emphatically despite an opinion poll today.
So where do the Maori now stand in all this ?
The Council in Tauranga are being pushed into changing many of the English name of the leading roads reflecting the years of development of Tauranga to Maori names since the localised Maori wars are now fully verbally factual.
Now the RSA are unhappy that an ANZAC Day parade near Wellington, I think, are being asked to recognise the Muslims by adding Muslim Prayers. Whilst we recognise one God there is a different interpretation to the Anglican and the Muslims interpretation.
I am not sure how the integration of Maori and the now prominent Muslim interpretations can reflect upon New Zealand – but there is now a sudden change after the dreadful massacre in Christchurch.

  The ANZAC Day parade in Wellington is not at issue for recognising Muslims but for including as part of the service yet another ‘remembrance of Christchurch’. Many people, not only Veterans have had enough.
  It has been not uncommon in the past for idiots to want in include the ‘topic of the day’ into ANZAC Day services. This was very prevalent after Viet Nam where Veterans stood and gritted their teeth. The pain of that still remains.
  The difference is that Veterans, who once feared for their jobs and futures are now able to speak out .

There’s an awful lot of news about the Crusaders name and a potential change.

A few thoughts around that:

1. The word crusade comes from the Latin word crux, meaning “cross.”

2. The crusades were largely a response to Islamic imperialism.

3. Crusades in the middle east lasted for about 200 years ending about 700 years ago.

It would appear to me that many Christians could harbour resentment towards the imperialist conquests that made the Crusades necessary, and that Islamist expansionism was the root cause of it all over 700 years ago.

I would suggest those lobbying for a name change on the grounds of righteous indignation and imagined “Hurt”:

“Park Their Snowflakes.”

Oh and has anybody asked the Crusaders fans whether they care to give up the name?

  Yep, the prophet exhorts the faithful to spread Islam using the sword – which they merrily did for 1000 years. Until they started getting beaten back by the militarised cultures (east and west) that sprang up to oppose them during the middle ages. The Islamic world fell apart when the silk road trade that predated through thievery and tariffs for wealth moved to ships. Their culture was fundamentally parasitical – relying upon slavery from surrounding regions for a significant portions of their workforce and other regions industry and invention for wealth they could appropriate. 3 hour police seige, and local primary school lockdown yesterday in Glen Eden, after gunman fired a shot – today the report is there were no arrests, no one named, and they will not confirm where he is. Then the Russian Gunmen who died by “suicide” after a three hour standoff, was also a very weird police report. He stabbed himself in the car. First aid was applied. He was dragged from the car and had facial bruising and dog bites. The facebook commenters weren’t buying it. We don’t seem to be getting the full picture and it’s creating unrest.

And, yes, I know enough about the geological formation of New Zealand to accept that the Hikurangi subduction zone is a genuine potential hreat.   My partner met Andew Dickens once at an Advertising Agency Xmas Party which was being held on a boat moored down at Westhaven. He was saying while everyone else wore appropriate boating gear, Dickens turned up in jeans, brown boots, leather jacket, and a scarf! Reckons hes a bit of an odd c ~ ~ t.
