Young people have been at the forefront of ongoing protests against a proposed extradition bill that have shaken Hong Kong. At the root of the turmoil is concern over what many people see as the inexorable erosion of civil liberties and the city’s auto¬nomy by an ever-meddling central government that refuses to grant full democracy in the former British colony. But many young people in what is one of the world’s most densely populated and expensive cities are also infuriated by sky-high living costs and a feeling that a home of one’s own will never be more than a dream.

Over the past decade, Hong Kong’s residential property prices have skyrocketed by 242 per cent, and for the ninth year in a row, the city’s property market has been rated the world’s most unaffordable.

The average monthly salaryis HK$19,100 for men and HK$14,700 for women. The average monthly rent for a one-bedroom flat in the city centre is HK$16,551. In 2018, average home prices were 20.9 times the gross annual median household income, accor¬ding to the Annual Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey. You could buy a French chateau for what you would pay for your Hong Kong shoebox in the sky.

With figures like these, it is clear that young Hongkongers’ anger will not be easily dispelled. … read more via hyperlink above

    There is a massive amount of undeveloped land in Hong Kong – probably about half it’s total area. It’s primarily a land-supply issue created by government.

  Political Journalists, as much as we point out their biases, do have the capability to realise that the wheels are falling off. They are, by their very nature, critical.
  
  That being said, they do seem to be filling a void in that National, as opposition, do not seem to be getting the hits in, at least as far as the MSM are concerned.
  
  National could do well to take note of what the MSM is saying, and target their statements accordingly.
  
  Simon Bridges, for all his intellect, is shockingly bad at this. Judith Collins, on the other hand, has this down to a fine art.

  The fact of the matter is that the PM makes herself an easy target. A few commentators have cottoned onto this. Sooner (we hope) or later the MSM is going to figure out that “Blood in the Water” is good copy, and that they wield an extraordinary amount of power over an incompetent government, far more than they ever wielded during the Key/English Era.

        PM Ardern was clear that Twyford was doing an ‘outstanding job’ … but that a fresh set of eyes is required for KiwiBuild … giving Megan Woods that responsibility.

  In Jacinda’s case she has made a pact where we the sheeple are meant to only see sweetness and light – this is achieved by ensuring all cameras with nano second freeze frame have been banished.   Fact is, the interviewer from The Project, a well known anti-conservative show, wanted to put the boot into to Morrison by having JA agree that he was the architect of the policy.
  
  He’s not the architect of the policy, just the manager of it. JA immediately recognised the trap and avoided it. That’s called expert diplomacy.

So yesterday we were told that you wouldn’t qualify for a gun licence in New Zealand unless you were a Citizen, today (on Hosking) we are told that you won’t get a gun licence if you’re here on a visitor’s Visa (Not sure about the previous process, but the lack of fixed abode, may have made the police cautious about such folk.)

It’s worth pointing out that Australians don’t arrive here on visitors visas. So this change would have done absolutely ZERO to prevent Tarrant (or whatever his name is) from doing what he did.

A decision to whether to review OIA Laws has quietly been pushed back. Andrew Little had previously argued that a overhaul of the Offical Information Act might not be needed as the Government is much more “OPEN” than previoushttps://i.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/114411080/decision-on-official-information-review-stalled administrations. Can anyone point out any other s Government that has had a Speaker that continually covers up for the Leadership of the Coalition when OIA starts to hurt those that the questions about.

We have a clueless PM. I heard her this morning on RNZ talking about a gun registry. She was quizzed about the cost and the example of Canada was cited (the Canadian database has gone from an initial estimate of C$2m to over C$2bn (a 1000x increase). Ardern blamed technology, and that Canada has multiple jurisdictions. She was talking cobblers changing technology may increase cost, but not a 1000x. Canada does have multiple jurisdictions, but the Canadian gun database is the responsibility of the Canadian Federal Police, the RCMP.

Now what is concerning is that the CoL’s initial estimate is NZ$50m for a database. Ardern claims it will be simpler, but the truth is she doesn’t have a clue because there isn’t even a specification for the database.

Equally of concern, was her liberal use of misinformation about current licencing arrangements and the future. She claimed that future licencing will involve inspection of homes to ensure security of guns in homes because many guns are stolen and end up in the black market. Once again what cobblers. Currently, if the cops are doing their job, you are interviewed at home and your gun storage arrangements are inspected before you get a licence.

    True story. A few weeks ago, I was at a National Partg function and the issue of the gun bans came up. The two MPs made it clear that the select committee process chaired by Michael Wood was a farce. It was the wrong committee for a start and it was comprised by a whole lot of CoL woman from urban centres. None of whom knew anything about the subject matter they were taking evidence on. What was made worse was the evidence presented by the police, which was also biased and misleading.
    
    And somehow we are meant to have trust in these institutions?

  Note she played the old trick of comparing the current cost with the cost of dog registration – a sure sign that gun licence costs will soar.

      Like it or not, the Opposition needs the media to report what they are saying and doing, but at the moment, the media in general is still in love with Jacinda (although one or two have been jilted), and the overwhelming majority of media comment is driven by the government.       Unless National changes it’s stance around immigration and foreign investment especially in residential housing, they’re going the way of the way of the dodo.
      
      BTW I’m more concerned with the 1.2 million student visas that were issued during Nationals time at the trough, many many of those students are now NZ residents.
      
      National was running a mass immigration by stealth policy and fuck the consequences.
      
      Because of that and the impact it’s had on people, especially younger people around living and housing costs, the younger generations now hate National with a passion.
      
      Currently National support is held up by boomers and probably the first half of generation x after that the majority are voting left, Every year that rolls on
      more boomers die off and the pendulum swings more in favor of the left.

The push-back against climate change nonsense seems to be gathering pace. An article published recently by The Institute for Energy Research includes the following very sensible observation:

One study looked at the increase in mortality in a cold, northern US city during a particularly brutal summer, and then extrapolated to show a staggering number of excess heat deaths decades down the road, when such “bad summers” were more common. Yet in the projections, the northern cities were no hotter than southern US cities are right now, and yes these southern cities don’t have nearly the same heat death rate as is projected for the northern cities decades down the road.

What is happening here should be obvious after a moment’s reflection: A northern city like Philadelphia is not adapted to hot summer the way Houston or Las Vegas is. But if climate change did indeed make such temperatures the norm—over the course of several decades —then the residents of the northern cities would adapt. The most alarming of the projections of climate change damages rely on naïve assumptions about human adaptability. They would install more air conditioning, and the people born in the year (say) 2080 would be much better able physically to cope with higher temperatures in 2100 than the people alive today.

The author concludes that

Even if we stipulate the basic projections made in the most recent IPCC assessment, what “unchecked” climate change will probably mean is that our great-grandkids will see a smaller increase in their standard of living than they otherwise would have, if some of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere could have been costlessly removed. Such a possible outcome is no reason to panic, and it doesn’t justify massive government intervention in the energy or transportation sectors.

I listened to part of Ryan Bridge’s session on Magic Talk yesterday afternoon. He opined that we are dealing with a cult that has become like a religion, and that no-one is allowed to challenge the gospel given us by our betters. It was interesting that, while Peter and Sean have had some very intelligent callers on this subject over the past week, Ryan’s callers all seemed to be fanatics with very ‘way out’ views. He asked callers if they had knowledge or qualifications through which they could prove that climate change was real. Most said, fervently, that they had studied climate science from the internet and there were many reports and articles backing their position. None accepted that they were listening to only one side of the story, and that there were opposing positions expressed by reputable scientists.

This is one of the biggest problems in this debate – the Internet allows people to select only the views they want to listen to and to shut out contrary opinions. The fear being fed to the masses will not be suppressed until there is a strong stance taken by a government or the IPCC is shown to be manipulating the evidence. (And yes, I realise I too rely heavily on ‘selective’ internet information – but I hope I am mature enough to challenge that which conflicts with 70-odd years of learning.)

        Governments clearly don’t actually want to do anything serious about climate change, as is apparent from the fact that none of them has. So why are they expending so much resource to persuade scientists to perjure themselves and produce analysis that Governments don’t want and advice that they won’t follow?
        
        It’s all to gain power, you cry. But how does that follow? How do politicians gain power by making scientists tell voters that there’s a problem, imposing unpopular policies to address it, then making scientists say that it’s still not enough – when actually there isn’t any such problem and the Government could much more easily buy votes by instead spending the money and resource on something that voters actually want?

I was reading an interesting piece in the NBR comparing 2 retailers The Warehouse ( a woke company) and Briscoes ( a non woke company.

Over the past 4 years The Warehouse profits have plunged and the share has halved from $4 to $2.

Briscoe profits and share price has steadily increased.

Im an old fashioned investor. I believe Directors CEOs and senior management should concentrate all their efforts on legally maximising returns to shareholders whilst paying the tax due on the profits.

They should leave it up to the Government to do the social welfare stuff.

Be wary of companies whose Annual Reports are full of CSR ( corporate social responsibility) ESR ( environmental social responsibility) sustainability and community projects.

The financials will be buried on page 142 in 4 point.

Disclosure I hold Briscoe but not The Warehouse shares.

    Agree however Steve Tindall hasnt had a day to day role in the company for a number of years and his son Robbie is his alternate on the Board whilst Steve concentrates on the Americas Cup.
    
    The problem is that Directors and CEOs with a leftist bent have been appointed and allowed to take control of the company and rather than concentrate on making money for the investors spend their time thinking up the next green programme.

  Many smaller companies are nibbling into the warehouse profit lines.. now with the opening of some global retailers it will only hurt the warehouse further.
  
  Briscoes will not be immune either.
  
  I mostly stopped using the warehouse when they banned plastic bags. The last time I stepped into one was before christmas, looking at kayaks. But didn’t buy.
  
  Although, I did have a warehouse money card, on very rare occasions the warehouse offers a magnificent deal on a good quality product. But, warehouse money started charging a $50 annual fee so cancelled the card. After cancelling, they rescinded the $50 fee (saying it was a mistake but methinks they lost 99% of their customers), but too late, morons.

  I have a close friend who has worked at senior administrative levels of MSD for 12 years. This from a conversation two weeks ago: “Yeah, the shift in focus has been huge. Where we used to be getting people into jobs, I’d say 95% of our effort in the last year has been getting people onto benefits of some kind”.
  
  This suggests to me that there’s been a deliberate policy shift. There will be memos. There will be leaks.

But guess what national, mssa shooters already have registration, already face higher scrutiny and higher security, their competitions already take place on police registered ranges.
Now is the time to push for a sporting exemption, but maybe national will teach us a lesson, what we really get if we vote for them.

Theres been some discussion on giving 16 yos the vote. I would support that provided they and all voters had to sit and pass an IQ test and a Political Knowledge test before that got a ballot paper.

This to ensure they have the capability and the capacity to vote.

Voting is far too important to leave to random chance.

    For example if you are going to vote for X Party and dont know who the Leader is and what their main policy planks are you dont get a ballot paper.

My partner did a nursing stint in an aged care facility (for one of the big outfits). Things are just as bad here, if not worse. The nurse in the story was responsible for 24 patients, my partner was sole nurse for 40! And, was paid $20 /hour, no sick leave, no holiday leave, no entitlements. Effectively a zero hour contract. I’m calculating, that puts her almost less than minimum wage for the worst job on the planet. Used to come home crying after some shifts because it was an impossible to do the job properly.

Fortunately, she did not have to do that for too long.

Next time you see the CEO of one of the big aged care operators talk about profit, think about what they do to their workers!

  If the working conditions and pay at aged care facilities was so bad, then the nurses should quit. The facilities would then be forced by the market to improve conditions or to go backrupt.
  
  Market forces will work, unless the government meddles in them by allowing cheap labor in from overseas (to force down wages and retard improvement in working conditions).
  
  Why the unions in NZ in the late 1960s (I am told) did not fight for the workers and mass-protest the importation of cheap labor is beyond me. Maybe they were international socialists striving for a global utopia rather than protectors of the New Zealand worker.

I watched QnA last night and have to say for once Jack Tame did a very good interview with Ardern. He asked tough questions and called Ardern out for her failures and incompetence. Hopefully it continues from the rest of the MSM. Ardern not surprisingly came across as out of her depth, incompetent and talked around the questions, as she had no answers or proof of achieving anything positive.

Meanwhile Iran/US/Israel allies are a whisker away from all-out war in the Gulf, likely resulting in massive airstrikes on Irans nuclear facility. China about to build a naval base in Cambodia as part of their Pacific expansion of influence.
If Trump gets impeached USA could well have a civil war on its hands,distracting it from Putins intentions on Making Russia Great Again.

Id be more worried about the slide to WW3 than warm weather and what height the tide at Lyall Bay will be in 80 years!

  Funny H indeed to only rely on “modeling” also looking very similar to the “modeled” results of their Families package for the benefit of a mere 384,000. So it is nothing more than a guess of between 50,000 to 75,000.
  Compare this to the tax cuts legislated for by National would have been for 1.4 million tax payers to keep more of what they earned. Plus would have lifted 50,000 out of poverty based on the established means of measure. As well as a clear intention to repeat the reduction in the next budget if they remained in power.
  That has all changed after the COL tampered with the means of recording or measuring poverty along with throwing more money at the problem. End result is they have no idea or plausible numbers after so many more are effected by the increasing effects of other policy actions as a result of those unintended consequences controlling any outcome. It is making all those feelz seem more a like new form of abuse albeit with a longer lag in the bruises appearing. Now after two budgets the latest “vision” is it will take several budgets to fix it. We hasten to ask is this their modeled outcome or just another guess?

    Some of that 1.4 million would have been people earning 7-figure incomes. The tax cut would have been worth considerably more $$ to a $100k earner that to a $35k earner on the (then) minimum wage.
    
    If the aim is to help the people at the bottom, a tax cut is a rather expensive way to do it. Joyce did make a lot of how much it was going to help low income earners ……

      The bulk of that tax rebate would have been reinvested back into our communities.. spent for the mentally challenged, which would have had an enormous impact on all parts of our communities especially those at the lower end of the earnings spectrum… shop/sales workers and manufacturing, but we’ll never know now as “ardern and the numbnuts” the rock stars of the lazy decided they could spend the money more efficiently than the workers of New Zealand.

      It’s a long time since the RN had the combat power to do anything like that. Remember, the Argentinians were tough enough after the Brits scraped together everything they had, including an aircraft carrier they had already decided to sell. Iran is a much tougher proposition and the UK’s armed strength has declined much more (realtively) over the decades. And re the US ‘carrier fleet’, Pompeo has said that it “falls to the United Kingdom to take care of their ships”.

        I read part of Tarrants “Manifesto” He aligns more with the far left and Green Eco Terrorists. Of course that is why the present mob have banned it…. PGA tournament winner Jim Herman credits Trump’s advice for helping him win the tournament.

Jim Herman captured the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship on Sunday, and he said the victory was due in part to valuable advice he received from President Trump when the two used to play together.

Herman was Trump’s regular golfing partner when he was employed as an assistant professional at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey. The 41-year-old said over the weekend that Trump had once urged him to try a different grip on his putter after struggling on the greens.

“He gave me a good talking-to and told me to use a different style if it’s not working,” Herman said Saturday after firing a 65 to climb to the top of the leaderboard at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky. “Some great advice, so I appreciate it.”

The Greens had to pull their attack message against Simon Bridges because their senior members did not like the way they targetted Simon Bridges accent. It seems all Parties in the Coalition that said they would the most honest open Government have let themselves down by targeting the person instead of Politics. You can’t defend the indefensible.

    Maybe not you but there are those who voted Green in reliance on their stated aversion to personality politics but decided that it was an expendable value once in power.
    
    Maybe also those who were impressed by the Greens vehement opposition to the waka jumping legislation only to find that the Greens focussed on self-preservation when it came to a vote.
    
    Then, of course, there are those who thought that the Kermadecs should be a marine reserve and rather stupidly, it seems, relied on the Greens to champion the cause.
    
    What about those who believed that the Greens would look after communities and, albeit misguidedly, do something about adverse effects of dairy farms only to see the minister ring the death knell on Waihi and prefer dairying to an existing mining operation.
    
    And those who were flabbergasted as they watched, without any semblance of protest, as Winston’s hoods scuppered an international agreement that would help preserve orange roughy—on the eve of the ratifying meeting,
    
    There are plenty who have had a complete gutsful of Green hypocrisy and who do care.
    
    BTW. Kudos to TV1 who reported that Wnnie professed to be above that sort of childish behaviour and vowed that he had never mocked “Soinon”. Tv1 then presented a clip of Peters repeatedly, and pointedly, referring to “Choina”.
    
    Cindy says that this is the year of delivery. So far, all They have delivered are some cheap shots.

Kudos to Northland MP Matt King, not only for beating Winston Peters in 2017, but for outing Health Minister David Clark as a liar:

David Clark has now repeated this lie so often, that he clearly believes the lie to be a fact. But as DPF noted when he blogged about it in 2017, Clark and Labour’s claims of National pulling money out of health simply don’t stack up. National increased health funding every year in $ terms, when adjusted for inflation, and adjusted to account for population changes:
