  Yours and mine both alloytoo. I tried; I honestly did. But when he launched into a rant about how Samuel Whitelock should have announced a name change for the Crusaders in his post-match speech at the trophy presentation, I was outta there!
  
  As for the rugby, Scott Robertson has made a very strong case to be appointed as All Black coach after the World Cup. He seems to be especially good with younger players, and with significant changes likely in the All Blacks from the end of the year as senior players head away to greener pastures, Razor is shaping up as the ideal candidate to take the team forward.

  I used to listen to Nat Rad overnight, but on Saturday a smarmy bloke told me that he had lots of good programmes to educate me, and proceeded to give me a lesson on pronouncing something or other.

A new day and more spin from Labour. In one breath, Manakau has an obesity problem, 3 times the national average. So the DHB needs more funds. Then in the next breath 1 in 5 (or 20%) of the population are suffering food deprivation. So, what do RNZ do? They interview a solo mum from Manakua, oh the irony.

Now I’m not arguing that certain ethnic groups don’t have obesity problems, or that the cost of food in the supermarket is high (and in some cases definitely overpriced). But when are people going to learn that throwing more taxpayer money at “perceived problems” is not the solution and helps to paper over issues for another day!

  Kilos equate to rich, that to status and better feeding which enabled survival.

  Yes I heard that. The problem seemed to be that the solo mum had to budget, and sometimes that meant she had to buy food on special, or not the item she wanted.
  Oh the horror. Like we all don’t have to do that.
  No mention of the ’emergency grants’ that are now given out on request. A WINZ/MBIE/DSIR or whatever employee boasted that they now gave out grants to 98% of requestors.

  …..Here in Canterbury …..the DHB has a moderator who is slashing and burning…..he is nicknamed the “Slasher” by medical personnel……if there is any DHB that needs a financial life line …..it is Canterbury…….the DHB has now dealt with two major catastrophes……the earthquakes ….and whilst the dead are remembered the injured are not…..there were so many and treatment for physical injuries has been extensive and on going….not to mention the mental health side…..then we had the mosque attack…..and again we are all remembering the dead…..but so many were injured and will need on going medical treatment……there is no where else that has had to deal with this sort of influx …..so why not throw us a life line…..last week Christchurch hospital was code red and black….with people parked in corridors etc…..and all we are getting is the slashing of elective procedures…..

For at least 60-odd years, ham radio operators have reported weird things happening within the bits of the spectrum they use, in the days and even weeks leading up to major seismic events.

‘Earthquake lightning’ is a recognised if not well-understood phenomenon, and some observers have postulated that it may be related to piezoelectric-like effects generated when large masses of rock undergo movement relative to one another.

Japan has a real-time earthquake warning system based on satellite radar that tracks ground stretch, giving up to 90 seconds warning of major quakes.

Is it possible that we may one day be able to scan for signals in the EMR spectrum that might give some longer term forewarning of upcoming seismic events?

        You reckon “we” haven’t seen “evidence of rampant racial problems”. But some people most certainly have. There are examples in the originally referenced article, there was the recent report alleging that racism in the health services is the reason for poor health outcomes for Maori, there was the report about the social services uplifting children. All of these, and more, have been seen by some people as “evidence of rampant racial problems”.
        
        You think it isn’t, they think it is. What makes your opinion any more correct than theirs, or vice versa? If you don’t think we need a Commissioner to investigate and opine as to when it is and when it isn’t legitimate to claim racism, how would you suggest that such differences be addressed?

    The poll results of unsuccessful candidates are determined greatly by the political bias of the electorate in which they are standing. A good candidate in a hostile electorate might poll worse than a weak candidate for a marginal seat.

    MMP may promote too much “democracy”. A House of Representives can never be wholly representative of any population.
    
    The leading team has the duty of executive action so many are inherently disqualified. They may represent care of insect life very well but you wouldn’t put them in charge anything requiring decision making.
    
    An ability to feel and care is not one of governance. The latter requires a broad vision, sound judgment independent of personal beliefs, an understanding of history and an understanding, also of human society and economic activity as interrelated both nationally and globally. That has to be coupled with proven experience and integrity. Decision making implies “now” not thinking about it in the sometime future. Even a fishnchip shop staffer knows that when given an order the fish has to be fried almost immediately. Action based on knowledge and skill is important.
    
    MMP allows candidates who don’t have the capacity to govern.

The headline could just as accurately say – Rental properties sit empty as owners make a business decision whether to rent it, put it on the market, convert it to a hay barn or just leave it vacant. The person with the gold makes the rules.

Meantime a lot more compliance coming right up, not forgetting the much increased renter rights currently being put together by officials to meet this government’s election promises.

Perhaps we will see a big increase in emergency housing funding and the social housing waiting list. Oh wait …. Sorry taxpayers.

The headline on the article itself has been walked back, but just a bit.

  I went to Wales a number of years ago and was surprised to find a lot of people preferring to talk in Welsh. There are other indigenous languages around about that some people prefer, too.
  Boris Johnson probably doesn’t know all that and is only thinking about languages introduced by ‘foreigners’.
  Many people are bilingual and can speak English fluently, but it’s never going to be their first language.

        Very common to have a bunch of mags. They are a consumable, and do wear out. Very expensive in New Zealand, but in the US typically sold in 10 packs – so sporting shooters would import them in 10 packs (Magpul brand in particular, very desirable, very reliable).
        
        If you are competing you will typically be carrying 3 per stage. Some ranges its easy to reload between stages, others just load a bunch up first. A competition will be up to six stages in a day.
        
        If your magazine wears out or gets dirty, or dropped, or bends a lip, then it won’t feed properly – this is a stage lost in competition.
        
        From a pest control perspective, if your mag jams or empties, that could mean half a mob of goats not killed, or potentially worse, some left injured to die in the bush. Reloading a magazine in a helicopter is not very practical or safe
        
        There was a NZ producer who geared up the equipment to make magazines for AR-15s, good quality, shame his business is now stuffed and the investment wasted.

    Magazines for ar15s and ak47 derivatives (which this ban is for) weren’t easily available in NZ until a couple of manufacturers tooled up to produce ar15 magazines domestically.Many people preferred US made ones so had to apply for an import permit and 10 was about the most you would be allowed to import at one time.The magazines don’t last forever.In my opinion it is indicative that NZP would not purchase NZ produced magazines for their ar15s.

We were discussing with friends over the weekend some of the problems now besetting this city – particularly in relation to the building industry.
The consensus of opinion was that any residential dwelling or apartment complex, which has either been developed by, funded by, designed by, or built by, any persons or organisations with an Asian connection, should be avoided at all cost.

    The link below is to a new building in Christchurch that allegedly has serious design flaws, and was designed by a Korean, but I think he learned engineering in NZ.
    
    Then there are the magnificent buildings of the great Chinese American architect Ieoh Ming Pei. His designs varied from the Louvre glass pyramid to the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong (second link below: it’s high resolution, give the picture time to load).

  We’ve been through these global upheavals before. Asset prices have to be adjusted down and your feeling for affordable homes eventually appreciated. Manufacturing money for the elite classes to become baronets in a new feudal world has to stop.

Huawei again. A new study from a London based think-tank shows links between Huawei engineers and China’s massive military agency responsible for conducting cyber espionage. Analysis of hundreds of leaked resumes reveals surprising amounts of collaboration between Huawei engineers and China’s military.

Using a unique dataset of CVs, this paper analyzes the relationship between key Huawei personnel and the Chinese state security services. Based upon an analysis of this dataset, I find there is strong evidence that Huawei personnel act at the direction of Chinese state intelligence, and that there exists a deep and lasting relationship between Huawei, its employees, and the Chinese state. This should raise questions within Western governments worried about Chinese access to domestic information.

I started watching one of your programmes last night but the horror of racism in NZ was too much for me to bear so I switched off.

A small bunch (how representative of NZ are they?) of teenage girls unable to date correctly the ToW told me nothing about racism in NZ.

The presence of only one Maori on our bank notes told me nothing about racism in NZ, contra the insinuation of one of your presenters.

That only one teenage boy was able to identify Apirana Ngata on a banknote but several could identify Edmund Hillary told me nothing about racism in NZ – or do you think they could have identified Michael Joseph Savage more successfully.

Perhaps it got better later, but I had stopped watching. If you want adults to watch your documentaries, make adult documentaries.

  I have just received an email from the taxpayers union – it mentions that Local boards can pay elected members up to $6,000/year for childcare services. How very generous of them.
  
  Does anyone know John Tamihere’s email address. I watched him interviewed with Phil Goff. Looks to have potential as far as I can see. At least he can add and doesn’t come across as a weasel.

Jacinderella’s Labour Coalition cash lolly scramble continues.

The Health Research Council has granted an Auckland University Pacific studies lecturer $603,400 (USD 400,000) to study how New Zealand’s mental health sector can be prepared to look after Pacific climate refugees.

Our psychiatric hospitals are run down, overcrowded and under-funded, and we are spending mental-health money on “climate change” effects?

Almost every second day our Leftist media is blaming present NZ mental health services for not saving someone from committing suicide, or murder, or even rape. They don’t focus on the mental health system’s lack of facilities, staff, and money.

The recipient of the grant, Jemaima Tiatia-Seath, of Auckland University, says 75 million people in the Asia Pacific region could be forced to flee by climate change.

Radio NZ reports her as saying: “It’s an opportunity to intervene early and gear up our mental health sector to prepare for what may be an influx of climate migrants.”

The Health Research Council falls under the jurisdiction of both David Clark, Minister of Health, and Megan Woods, the Minister of Research, Science and Innovation.

Both Clark and Woods have the honorific “Dr”, but neither is a medical doctor. Clark, after initially dipping into medicine studies, became a Presbyterian minister and then Treasury analyst. Woods obtained her Ph. D. in history (as I recall, her thesis was on a feminism-related topic).

  The HRC is funded for research. Money spent on health research is not money available directly on health services. Unless your argument is a more general one, along the lines of “why do my local councillors have scones for their meetings when the drain outside my house has been blocked for two days!”
  Also, is it your contention that only a medical doctor could be minister of health, or only a lawyer minister of justice, for example?

    HRC funds come from the taxpayer. So do funds for the health services.
    
    It’s of interest that the Minister of Health, typically known with the honorific “Dr,” isn’t a medical doctor. That’s all.

      Actually, it is PhDs (DSc, LLD etc) who are entitled to use the title “Doctor”; medical practitioners with bachelor degrees use title “Doctor” because they are doctors by occupation, but the title is honorific, in UK and NZ etc they do not hold a university doctorate. In the USA, the MD, BDS is a graduate degree like the MB, BS/ChB, BDS. (Surgeons used the title “Mr” because once they were barbers.)
      
      So, the word “doctor” is used as a title and an occupation.

New “Green car initiative”. There is a new proposal from the government to tax imports of “dirty” cars and offer financial incentives of up to $8000 to people buying “cleaner” cars.

As part of this proposal the government will renege on the promise of not charging electric vehicles road user charges till 10,000 electric cars are on the roads in New Zealand.

Those of us early adopters that bought an electric car (at a relatively high cost) would have to start paying road user charges earlier than promised.

If you have been thinking about buying an electric car it might pay to wait till the financial incentives are actually in place. Don’t buy one now (and don’t believe anything that the government promises you)!
