      Sounds like a pretty marginal call. Still, marginal calls can be “justified” depending upon who the players are. That “justification” will be confirmed if the perp gets continued name suppression for the remaining, rather minor matters.

        Remember a ex-Labour MP convicted of dishonesty was given life-long suppression of name and anything that could identify him, along with all evidence in the case?
        Seems Labour have a history of covering up anything that may affect them politically.

  Even the Labour Party concedes that the donation in question was absolutely, 100% in compliance with the requirements of the Electoral Act. It’s a non-story.
  
  However, anything to divert attention away from the clusterf#ck that is Kiwibuild, and Nippert’s loyalty to the cause might even be rewarded with a coffee with the PM.

      This has been around for a long time and has never, and let me repeat that, never, been verified by a bona fides investigator. The very wording of the article is full of obfuscation and jargon, but no real explanation at all.
      
      There was a big push around 10-12 years ago in Italy, promising a device that would produce energy that could be studied – but nothing eventuated. The article does claim that “they” want to protect IP etc and so do not want to disclose too much, but extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence, and so far nothing substantial has been produced. How many years must one wait for something substantial ?
      
      My conclusion is that they must be short of money again and want to tap the punters for more money.

        Read the background papers now. Unis world wide have verified the phenomenon. Its now gone quiet as the patent rush has begun. The tightening up on commercial revelations also occurred with computing. Raytheon published the detailed logic of its 704 operating system but all copies were later disappeared. Edison worked hard in private for years before perfecting his light bulb.
        
        I’m sitting on the fence too awaiting more public moves. A Japanese Uni has a whole Dept dedicated to its research, the US DOD is involved, Airbus have patents. The situation is a bit similar to transistors–who of us understand the”holes” in transistors? The EVO phenomena now being investigated goes back to the days of radio valves. It was discovered then and had to be worked around to make them function. Plasma it seems takes many different forms causing interesting things to happen. It also is reported occurring in fluorescent light tubes.
        
        Glory and reward awaits those who persevere. I don’t doubt the reports of verification from the unis–there have been too many from diverse places.

  Well no JW that appears to have been overlooked completely apart from a pledge to “build as many as they can” which may turn out to be the “quantum” shift Woods emphasized. Quantum being the minimum amount of any physical entity.
  However there may well be some serious unintended consequences be revealed in the diminishing days left for the COL’s term. Targets have been their downfall apparently so they are now intent on lifting the % of home-ownership. Something that has remained almost static for almost 100 years as pointed out by one expert Mike Hosking had on his show.
  Reducing the deposit limit to 5% that can be cobbled together by a family group from Home Start and their available Kiwisaver withdraw limits could make it a soft option no cash input deal. All be it with a 95% mortgage that will make them very nervous about interest increases in the future apart from any title complications from family input.
  The final straw that moves the whole reset away from Kiwibuild is that all that accumulated draw-downs and handouts can be used on the purchase of an existing home. Thereby helping push up regional real estate prices to bring a sort of equality to the market to the sellers benefit.
  As always the devil will be in the detail which likewise as always have yet to be completed but even the likes of Bryce Edwards are less than complimentary about this reset.

The best hope that the UK had for a beneficial Brexit Deal was the intention and ability to walk away from a bad one.

That the UK parliament has removed that option from the PM just goes to show how inept they are. In pointing a legislative gun to the head of the PM, they have only shot themselves in the foot.

  I don’t understand the weirdness of the UK Parliament. It seems to be all about taking positions rather than governance.
  
  PM Boris can now probably just ignore them whatever their resolutions. If Parliament wish to act against the referendum it would be proper for the PM to frustrate that.
  
  The UK is powerless to make the EU agree to anything. The date has been set for withdrawal.

Labour Party camp: Lawyers spat over details after reaching plea deal.
The prosecutor in the Labour Party summer camp trial says the Crown does not accept there was no sexual offending, despite taking a downgraded plea deal to resolve the case.
But the accused’s lawyer says her client “is not a sexual offender and appropriately the Crown have now recognised that”.
… At trial he was accused of having grabbed and squeezed a man’s testicles, touched another man’s genitals twice, kissed a woman on her neck and face and groped a second woman’s breast and bottom.
Priest said she would be seeking a discharge without conviction for the two assault charges and permanent name suppression for her client.

  A plea bargain seems to have been agreed to. The Judge will aware of that from the run of the case.
  The Crown has got certainty of convictions against the risk of losing to a jury.
  The parties will get their chance to make representations as to sentencing. It’s over to the Judge now.
  
  This is a common situation in the criminal courts.
  The Labour Party has been discredited and we may hear more about that.

      How do you stack a jury in NZ?
      
      You may not like the outcome but the Courts are Courts of law with agreed rules. The outcome has been serious convictions for assault. Those will taint the crims future.
      The jury outcome was uncertain. I trust our prosecutors.

    The Courts are always theatre. I understand it was a jury trial so the defense of being drunk may have swayed a jury much to the horror of the Prosecutor.
    I am aware of an attempted rape trial in which blind drunkeness was raised as a defense. That was not acceptable because the crim brought the condition on himself so was responsible for the consequences.
    The certainty of conviction even on a lesser charge is often the smart course.

      it is because they have chopped down 47.5 million mature trees elsewhere.

    He also admitted his target of planting one billion trees was “fanciful” but argued aspirational targets were needed to boost a sector he described as “undervalued, under utilised but still with great capacity”.

  Of course there will be price rises, deal or no-deal. NZ experienced a pretty tough time when Great Britain turned its back on us, but no-one died because of it.

    There will only be price rises if Britain implements tariffs. In many areas (food especially) there would be huge price drops if Britain purchases at world rather than internal EU prices. Just as an example, the EU price for Sugar is way higher than the free market price. The same follows for dairy, many fruits, and other products heavily protected within the EU.
    
    There may be rises in some areas if the EU applied export restrictions or levies on goods sold to the UK, but if they do there are almost certainly alternative providers of those products and in a relatively short time substitutes could be found to reduce prices.

  Mjw – the people want to get out of the European union and take their country back and be in charge of their own destiny. Unfortunately their parliamentary representatives are mainly remainers who benefit from the globalist order and refuse to abide by the wishes of the people.
  
  It is an interesting question that cuts to the heart of what it means to be a human being. Are we part of some global Village based on secular materialism and free trade and the gradual merging of countries into one another?
  
  Or is a person rooted in an actual community based on God and country and community and home?
  
  It is a profound divide. Based on what we see with Trump and brexit and Brazil and Poland and even Australia, the backlash against globalism is gathering strength.

Proof Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas and proof that MPs are not always the brightest. I give you the UK House of Commons.

The Commons have passed a bill telling Boris he isn’t allowed to crash out of the EU without a deal by 31st Oct, so they want him to ask for an extension.
But the MPs who passed the bill, have not got an answer to Boris asking, but not getting an extension, so what happens then?

Boris, is calling the MPs bluff and asking for a general election, but the Turkey’s are unlikely to give him one. Seems they are too comfortable in their trough for another 3 years!

  The Bill was worded that the UK would have to accept whatever deal the EU offered.
  I think 21 Tory MPs (of the 29 Tory MPs who voted against the Govt) have now been deselected and kicked out of the Conservatives.
  Iirc, Johnson doesn’t have to accept the Bill but first it goes to the House of Lords.
  Apparently they have put forward over 90 amendments to it and the majority appear to be totally against the Bill.
  All the Polling shows Johnson would win an Election with an increased majority.
  Labour definitely doesn’t want one as they will be hammered (especially under Corbin) although they have been calling for one pretty much all the time!
  I reckon there’ll be an Election in October – Drain the Swamp!

Listening this morning to the UK Parliament debacle over Brexit. There are many dark forces at play here from outside the UK.
Is it called Undemocratic when the vote of the people is defied by the 600 people of the Parliament.
The anti Brexiteers want another referendum and another until they get their own way.
If we have a referendum say over Cannabis and it is defeated will the Parliament defy and pass the law in the favour of the referendum which failed.
Likewise the Abortion referendum ?

    Ireland and Denmark have had polls and rejected referenda propositions, only to see changes made specific to each country to get acceptance.
    
    Then in 2005 when both France and the Netherlands both rejected the new EU constitution, the EU to save their project rewrote the constitution as a Treaty, thus avoiding referenda in many countries. The Irish still rejected the Lisbon Treaty got some concessions and the Treaty and concessions passed in a second referendum.

  I did two jobs and still couldn’t save enough for deposit. A State House was our first real home when I was a Public Servant, aged 24 with 3 children. The Family Benefit (WFF in its time) was eventually allowed to be capitalised for the deposit. A 3% suspensory loan topped off the package.
  Some provisions along those line seem reasonable still.

  Hubby and I did get a Housing Corp loan for our old Villa in Island Bay.
  
  It was a Catch-22 for most people to qualify though , as you had to have decent deposit as well as be on a lousy wage. Most workers on a low wage would never had been able to acquire a decent deposit; those who had a deposit, usually had a decent wage and didn’t qualify.
  
  We managed to qualify at the end of our PhDs (so only had hubby’s demonstratorship salary) when I inherited just enough for a deposit from my dead brother’s estate.
  
  The Housing Corp had recently changed its rules and would lend on old houses as long as they were on concrete piles….so we weren’t forced to look for a house in god-forsaken suburbs like Johnsonville, Newlands or Tawa.
  
  Our old doer-upper Villa gobbled up every spare $$$$ we had for the next 30 years.

I have decided to vote against all the encumbants in the upcoming Auckland Council for election for the following reasons.

1, The governance at my local tennis club is far superior to the AC governance.

2. The so called Council Controlled Organsiations are an oxymoron.

3. Both of my local Councillors have told me any reports they get from the CCOs are heavily reacted

4. When they asked why they are told “commercial sensitivity”.

5. Many of the Directors of the CCO are conflicted due to their current or former associations.

    Your specific reference to “his arsenal of weapons” narrows the comment down to absurdity. I doubt a shot person really cares what weapon was used.

Government says it will now build just one really nice home

As part of today’s long-anticipated reset of the Government’s flagship KiwiBuild policy, Housing Minister Megan Woods says the number of houses to be built in the next 8 years has been “scaled back” from 100,000 affordable homes to just one really nice home.

Woods was forced into formally declaring a reset of the policy after the Government’s first strategy – pretending they misspoke and meant to say they wouldn’t build 100,000 houses – failed.

Woods did her best to put a brave face on the situation at a press conference this afternoon, insisting the policy was still popular, and the only real hiccup was the Government’s failure to build virtually any houses at all.

“When we talk to people around the country, they’re really enthusiastic for KiwiBuild, they love the policy, they think we should stick at it,” she said, “but the one thing that keeps coming up again and again is, they don’t like that the houses don’t actually exist.”

The fact that there are “almost no houses” instead of “lots of houses” was frustrating for people, she said.

There is a “heightened risk” that Fonterra won’t be able to afford to pay its farmer suppliers the full milk price in the current production season because it will need to make further asset write-downs, ANZ agriculture economist Susan Kilsby says.

Fonterra’s already announced write-downs of about $860 million and an after-tax loss of possibly up to $675 million for the financial year to the end of July. The full results are to be announced by the co-operative next week.

In an ANZ Dairy Update, Kilsby is estimating, however, that another $300 million to $700 million of write-downs might be required into the next financial year.

    Veer’s name was originally Ekant Veer Singh, and he says his parents dropped “Singh” just before he moved to New Zealand at age 15. Yet there are plenty of Singhs in New Zealand. It isn’t a hard name for English speakers. I’ve just done a White Pages search of “Singh” for NZ, and it came up with 1199 results. This won’t include Singhs who have dropped land lines for mobiles.
    
    However, probably for millennia, people have been amending their names on moving to lands with other cultures. Occasionally this has been forced by intense society pressure, as for the thousands of New Zealanders of German descent who changed surnames in World War 1 and the decade after that (“Walters” to “Waters” and “Schmidt” to “Smith” are examples).
    
    It’s been common to have a local name and a true name among NZ’s Chinese pioneer settlers. A woman might be “Mei-ling” to family and close friends, and “Mary” to friends and fellow employees. I can’t see a helluva lot of difference from having a pseudonym on a blog like this one.

    This comes from the Dutch word for steel – staal – which would have been brought back to Russia by Peter the Great and his team from from their work experience in West Europe.
    
    Having different alphabet systems complicates transfer of surnames into new languages. Often, perhaps even usually, you end up with only rough equivalents in the new language.

      Hubby and I both have PhDs…His was in Physics.
      
      There’s no need to use our titles these days, so nil confusion.
      
      The M-in-Law had a Laurea degree from Italy, and
      therefore could use the Title Dr. (At one time all Italian Graduates were called Dr).
      
      So when she was alive and I received a phone call for Dr Wassilieff, I had to ask the caller to be more specific, as they had a choice of 3 people.

In earlier days I came across these sorts – and often found they were the products of real dog-eat-dog upbringings and that, now, the world owes them a living.

I sincerely hope these people are jailed for a very long time. They are not fit to be among us.

Revelations today that the proposed Manawatu Gorge replacement highway will be reduced from 4 lanes (as originally showcased in the NZTA promo video) …. down to 2 lanes for a 3km stretch from the summit.

WTF! Is the COL taking the piss against motorists? To think that someone in the COL thinks having heavy transport trucks slow everything else down (including themselves) and cause potential merging lane crashes is a good idea, and near the summit??!!!

Who’s the COL fool who decided this, come on, own up!!
