When asked if his party would block the project if the costings came back too high, he said that was an invitation to “depart from the modus operandi of a good coalition partner”, which was to consult with partners first.

So best practice “was to consult with partners first” – you are told there could be a blow out, you consult Twyford and find there is, or isn’t – and if there is, you blow the whistle in public.

So, why is Winston already blowing the whistle?

And is Winston a little confused in what he is doing?
“Being there to keep them honest” is the Opposition’s job.
Much as he obviously hates Bridges and National, Winston, within the Government that he himself selected, is trying to do the Opposition’s work – in fact keeping Winston’s own Government honest.

Which is “honestly” a little fucked up.

And what else is Winston, in his capacity as an honest Opposition (National with a capital ‘N’) keeping his eye on? – the now well overdue Dew review (allegations “unfounded fiction”, an “orgy of speculation”, and “innuendo” “led by a woman called Paula Bennett” – Winston) or Ihumatoa (Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters says ‘who has been keeping the land warm over the centuries’ will guide any decisions on Ihumātao, not the view of ‘outsiders’) or TV3 (Winston Peters savages Mediaworks’ situation, saying it’s ‘good riddance’ to some staff), and meantime running a legal vendetta, a saga of utu, against a leak that was positive publicity to his benefit just before the last Election when Metiria had hogged most of the oxygen.

  Yvette, come on now, you are not being fair to the lying Toxic Gnome known as Winstone First. Winstone never tells untruths or smears his opponents, like:
  1. He had seen the evidence and the National Party were guilty of hacking the Treasury website; or
  2. He had been watching proceedings and there was no sexual assault by the Labour staffer. It was just made up smears by Paula Bennett.
  
  The Toxic one, should stop being given platforms by a fawning media and instead should answer the questions put to him as instructed.

  He looks like he is toast it will be close but it looks like the conservatives need to support him to fall over the line if polls are correct. Refreshing to see Greens got just 2 seats last election, great if this is zero and they are buried to history, it would be a start down the right road.
  He will be perfect fit for UN.

How easily were Maori duped into voting Labour into all seven electoral seats ?
Like it or not kiwibloggers, the Maori Party made substantial gains while in coalition. The troubling stats in poverty, unemployment and incarceration were all tracking in the right direct, slow but steady progress in turning back over a century of neglect. It truly was, to use an overused and almost meaningless phrase now, hard mahi.

Those stats are now regressing as Labour rejected the detailed work required. The Maori MP’s are either invisible, or braying donkeys like Willie Jackson. None of them have the commitment, mana or strength of conviction to match Turiana Turei, Pita Sharples or Te Ururoa Flavell.

Left wing cheerleaders like Simon Wilson celebrate the ‘new’ Waitangi Day (‘something has changed’).
Nothing has changed. During colonisation, Maori swapped their land and their sovereignty for a few dollars, and blankets. Now they settle for a couple of burnt sausages dished out by the Prime Minister once a year.

  Well, it’s fairly simple really.
  
  Under a National Maori Party Coalition, policies were put in place that would allow Maori to develop a solid economic base and work to better themselves as full and fit treaty partners, allowing them to take charge of their own destiny, developing as Maori, for Maori. As befits a proud indigenous race.
  
  Under a Labour/Green/NZF coalition, policies were put in place to hand out money with little or no oversight or accountability, save a promise to vote for the self appointed ‘first citizen of the provinces’ whose nephews are still well ensconced on their couches! Dependency on the largess of the state is encouraged, state control is the key, and anything to encourage development is slaughtered on the altar of political correctness and identity politics. We have to help you succeed because you’re a colonised people and cannot do anything for yourself.
  
  So, who is truly ‘honouring the treaty’ and who is simply feeding the treaty grievance gravy train?

  One of the principal tenets of MMP was to give Maori an independent voice in our Parliament. Maori have spoken, and apparently no longer wish to exercise their right to have that independent voice.
  
  Accordingly MMP should be be resigned, and the now meaningless Maori seats dissolved. We should be looking forward to a less apartheid system than MMP, which has so obviously failed to deliver what was perceived as a principal benefit !

      Therein lies the rub indeed.
      
      I read Right of way is Way of Right’s above post with interest. The post notes a difference between “full and fit treaty partners, allowing them to take charge of their own destiny, developing as Maori, for Maori.       How does Treaty partnership work? Strong Maori tribal overlords owned NZ in the way strong Anglo-Saxon aristocratic families owned England and kept it in the family.
      
      Those iwi keeping or regaining some of NZ could “take charge of their own destiny, developing as Maori, for Maori”, but how is that economic success distributed? And which laws should apply to a ‘proud indigenous race’? Some of their original laws were pretty harsh.
      
      I remember the leader of an economically successful iwi recently didn’t see iwi membership as shares in an investment for each iwi member that counted against their eligibility for govt. benefits. Why not?
      
      And how does the Treaty help people with some Maori blood, often urban, whose ancestors were not part of a strong tribe but had been slaves from beaten tribes and might have been murdered and eaten if not worked to death?
      
      And can anyone call themselves ‘Maori’ and get some kind of special benefit from doing so?
      
      So is the Treaty of Waitangi today considered a deal between all non-Maori with anyone calling themselves ‘Maori’?
      
      Or as a deal between the government and some iwi aristocrats who can then do what they want with the money and even apply the old laws of the elite of that tribe?

  Actually they swapped their land for axes and muskets as well.
  
  The axes allowed them to build more stable houses and build more canoes. The muskets enabled those with the muskets to take back far more land by conquest than they ever “sold” plus keep the larders stocked with exellent protein….. the hapless slaves and those defeated in battle.

    So if I have a smart lawyer (which I can afford on the profits I am making), he shows that I am an addict, but have a 40′ container of drugs in my back yard that I am using to give away to school kids, so they become addicted to selling it to buy from me.
    I have a very handy franchise system/pyramid scheme with dependent (deliberate pun) distributors none of which, including me, which will not be inhibited by prison time.

Why do some people hate Donald Trump so much? The elites and the media revile him and post pictures of his severed head and dream of blowing up the White house with him in it.

Some say it’s because of his tweets and his sometimes crude language. But Victor Hanson argues it’s because of his agenda. His agenda is undoing all of the things Obama did and restoring American greatness. At some level the elites never believed America was great. They want to transform America into a socialist pc paradise.

Trump will have nothing of that. He believes in capitalism and unemployment is now at its lowest level in 50 years. Wages are rising. America is becoming energy independent.

At some level a great America offends the left. They don’t want a great America. In their hearts they yearn for Venezuela.

For every positive action he does, he can’t help tweeting some nasty comment about somebody or something he doesn’t agree with.     What you want is what many others want, they want someone performing the traditional president act. The wise statesman, who behaves somewhat like a gentleman. Perhaps they offer “kindness”. Meanwhile they don’t achieve much except long term damage. And they are too high up on the moral high ground to defend themselves.
    
    The moral high ground is weakness in this day and age. It’s the feckless gelded sawhorse that leaves the one putting it on, helpless. Instead Trump continually forces the media and democrats to dance to his tune, through well aimed tweets. They’re half his power.
    
    If he didn’t make those tweets, he’d be dancing to their tune and accomplishing way less than he is.

Peter’s knows he picked the wrong subject to abuse and now is trying to limit the damage by saying that he can help.

The Green Blob has written another “report” showing that the replacement cost of buildings that are waiting to be lost to rising seas could exceed $19 billion (https://www.stuff.co.nz/environment/climate-news/116737630/cost-to-replace-buildings-affected-by-rising-seas-expected-to-exceed-19-billion)

I was curious about whether this is actually a lot of money. So I worked out the replacement cost of cars on NZ roads. Stats NZ figures for imports in 2018 shows the average cost of new and used vehicle imports is about $34,000, and LTNZ says that there are over 3.4 million registered passenger cars and vans. So the total cost of this vehicle fleet is over $110 billion; add several billion more for other sorts of motor vehicles. We replace this in its entirety every 10-15 years, whereas the buildings will have to wait the best part of a century for the sea to get them (on average – a few will go very soon, but many will not be at risk for over 100 years on IPCC figures).

So not only is the value at risk from rising seas relatively small, but implementing the Zero Carbon bill would force a vastly larger cost on us in the fairly near future, as fossil-fueled vehicles will have to be forced off the road. Not that the Stuff journalist would want to look up any figures to give the reader a sense of proportion – that would spoil the scare headline.

  Most of the buildings and infrastructure purportedly ‘at risk’ will require replacement through reaching the end of their serviceable lives long before ‘sea level rise’ has any impact.
  The sorry side effect of this scaremongering is that the insurance industry will penalise the average person by refusing cover or sucking out grossly inflated premiums. When will the doom-sayers realise just what it is they are doing.

I am insulted by the polarizing nature of this article. Why are “Pākehā New Zealanders” (are there Pākehā Australians too?) the only ones to blame for the plight of people who self-identify as Maori? From the Asian quarter, I feel excluded and left out.

In time, people who self-identify as Maori will find that Chinese, Koreans, Japanese and other groups from more highly competitive and unforgiving cultures don’t do “White Guilt.”

How will a neglected Polynesian child from a single-parent household on welfare (where there are no books in the house) even think about competing with a keen child with a Tiger Mother and a Tiger Father who pay for tutors, accelerated learning camps, martial arts and piano lessons from kindergarten grade. Who will work for whom 20 years from now?

  I don’t do ‘white guilt’ either. I had aspirations for my kids, and did the best I could for them – luckily, it seems to have worked out for they are all independently and modestly wealthy, with enduring family relationships.
  It would take so little effort to get these kids on the right track, that it seems criminal not to make it. I remember when kids were sent to ‘health camps’ to recuperate from long illnesses or as a relief from family poverty. Perhaps children who come from deprived/neglectful homes could be offered the same opportunities when they are 5 years old. (Such deprivation is not new – I remember an new-entrant’s infant teacher telling me that some children had to learn about books, and how to turn the pages without tearing them, because they didn’t have books in their homes. They couldn’t go into formal infants classes until they learnt basic hygiene, use a spoon, how to put on their shoes, and other useful skills. Such children were always half a step behind the other kids in their age group. This was in the 1960’s.)

This morning on Radio Magic, Amanda The Newsreader was telling us about some chickens that will be ‘humanly’ removed from somewhere.
I think the word she wanted was ‘humanely’. There is quite a difference in meaning, and her misunderstanding of the difference could confuse those as ignorant as herself.
She also mentioned a place called CantaBRIa. The emphasis in multi-syllabled words is placed on the anti-penultimate syllable so the emphasis should have been CanTABria.
If people think I am being pedantic, so be it, but language is learned by listening, and the onus is on public speakers to set a good example so that people can learn. We can’t be expected to understand each other if we can’t express ourselves accurately.
And they do go to Broadcasting School, don’t they?

Anticipating the length of this, you may want to skip it, but if you are in Auckland traffic, give it a go – you probably have plenty of time, especially now …

An advocate for looking at your poop before you flush it is Mehmet Oz, MD, the host of The Dr. Oz Show, who explained during a now-famous appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show that the perfect poop is log-like and S-shaped, not broken up into pieces.
Which is enough detail probably for anyone still looking at their breakfast.

But a factor in this medical gem is to consider the number of Americans – indeed, millions around the world now aware of this – who take a glance at the morning’s doings and perceive it isn’t S-shaped (despite the bodily gyrations that may be required to achieve that) and start their day in profound dismay that not only is this an indication they are unwell, but have yet failed again in a most basic move.

An aside: In a visit to Japan I was shown around Buke Yashiki, the samurai mansion of Saigo Tanomo (1830-1903)
At the back was a small annex on stilts, below which, from the outside you could see, and access, a small cart on rails. It came from a position under a toilet that was for the use of any visiting lord, and yes, the toilet was sideways, perhaps something to do with swords and the use thereof. The cart was filled with sand to separate things a little for the mansion’s resident health advisor to examine, which could be a challenge if the visiting lord had tried the variety of food I had in five days. The toilet also had no ceiling to stop ninjas from dropping in on the lord at a time when it would be difficult to defend himself – perhaps a consideration now for multi-gender toilets.
The facility to check what had been done is now reflected in New Zealand’s supply of toilets, many of which are sourced in Eastern countries and the fact it easier to hit the sides than the water. This, despite the Kiwi trend to once things are done, just flush and be done with it, foregoing the opportunity to understand yourself better.

But why mention this out of the blue – apart from not managing a S-shape this morning … again?

It’s the controversial plan to slash speed limits on nearly 800 urban and rural Auckland roads which could cost Super City ratepayers $24 million.
The hassle presently of course is traffic congestion slows speeds to almost equal to walking, so anything Auckland Transport actually sets is going the be like the parliamentary Prayer – totally aspirational, a goal to be aimed at but seldom attained.

So after an S-shape disappointment, you may next each day face a speed limit to aspire to, but seldom attain. It is all crap that could drive you now around the bend – surely setting new demands on our already belaboured mental health system?

It seems the govt is considering a new scheme, ‘Kiwi Spend’ which will limit the amount you’re allowed to spend of your own Kiwi Saver. It seems they want to keep hold of it just a bit longer….

A “drip-feed” income scheme is being proposed to ensure Kiwis don’t outlive their retirement funds.

The new proposal is called KiwiSpend and would kick in when KiwiSaver members turn 65.

It would give retirees regular payments of up to $12,000 annually depending how much they save rather than a lump sum.

This money would come on top of their superannuation.

KiwiSaver members would automatically become part of the scheme with the chance to opt out after seeking advice.

  Fleeing from the police should be an automatic do not pass go do not go to court go straight to jail. That and drunk driving should be an automatic removal of license and have to start right over from learners until you can obey the laws. We are far to soft on people not obeying the laws with driving.

Poor Auckland

* Auckland Transport (AT) has put the brake on motorists, slashing speed limits across the central business district.

Board members on Tuesday afternoon voted to implement a 30kmh speed limit for the entire city centre, apart from Hobson, Fanshawe and Nelson Sts, which will be 40kmh.

Changes are also on the way for 700 kilometres of rural roads which will have new speed limits.

The board decided to leave existing speed limits on 20 roads, mostly in rural areas in the south.*

There seems to be a perception that farmers are farming for the capital gains on the land values of their property.

However, the evidence doesn’t seem to be there for that presumption. It certainly undermines the presumption that foreign buying has pushed up median prices. Perhaps in a few selected locations, but certainly not overall or over a long timeframe.

Police confirmed they had been notified of a fire job at the Barclays building on Albert St, with smoke reported in the building.

It was not clear if there was a fire, a spokeswoman said.

An elderly couple who were staying at the Barclay told the Herald they evacuated when they heard the alarm go off but were unsure if there was a fire.*
