  In New Zealand, an individual – Samuel Parnell.
  
  Interestingly he sought union support for the eight hour day, but they refused. It would be wrong to make him out as anti-union by any means, but he was also not an ardent socialist, just a business owner who saw the human value of rest and recreation, and took advantages of skilled labour shortages in mid 19th century NZ to cement those principles.

    George Hunter (first mayor of Wellington) was the person who agreed to hire Mr Parnell for 40 hours per week.

  No, I didn’t, so I looked it up. According to Wkipedia (usual caveats apply)-
  
  New Zealand
  Promoted by Samuel Duncan Parnell as early as 1840, when carpenter Samuel Parnell refused to work more than eight hours a day when erecting a store for merchant George Hunter. He successfully negotiated this working condition and campaigned for its extension in the infant Wellington community. A meeting of Wellington carpenters in October 1840 pledged “to maintain the eight-hour working day, and that anyone offending should be ducked into the harbour”.
  
  Parnell is reported to have said: “There are twenty-four hours per day given us; eight of these should be for work, eight for sleep, and the remaining eight for recreation and in which for men to do what little things they want for themselves.” With tradesmen in short supply the employer was forced to accept Parnell’s terms. Parnell later wrote, “the first strike for eight hours a day the world has ever seen, was settled on the spot”.
  
  Emigrants to the new settlement of Dunedin, Otago, while onboard ship decided on a reduction of working hours. When the resident agent of the New Zealand Company, Captain Cargill, attempted to enforce a ten-hour day in January 1849 in Dunedin, he was unable to overcome the resistance of trades people under the leadership of house painter and plumber, Samuel Shaw. Building trades in Auckland achieved the eight-hour day on 1 September 1857 after agitation led by Chartist painter, William Griffin. For many years the eight-hour day was confined to craft tradesmen and unionised workers. Labour Day, which commemorates the introduction of the eight-hour day, became a national public holiday in 1899.

  Mr Parnell. He was a builder in 19th century Wellington. He believed in 8 hrs work, 8 hours sleep and 8hrs for everything else. I think his first name is Samuel but I can’t be bothered looking it up.

    as a tradie and when I had the company…if we were only doing 40 hrs/wk we tried to do 4 x 10 hrs days as the lads valued a 3 day weekend way more than a spare 2 hours on a Tuesday evening..

  Samuel Parnell in 1840. However it is not clear whether he was an employee or a labour only contractor or a ‘builder’. Presumably George Hunter who engaged him to build a store wanted it completed as soon as possible implying the carpenter had to work long hours something that Samuel resisted. Since carpenters were in short supply George had to swallow a rat and accept that Samuel was going to work 40 hours a week only.
  There was a sad case in England in the early days of the railways. There was a signal box that was manned 24/7 by two signalmen working 12 hour shifts. Every two weeks one of the signalmen had to work 24 hours straight to change shifts. One of them near the end of a 24 hour shift made a human error resulting in a train crash.
  The resulting inquiry ruled that such a shift practice was unacceptable.

    New Zealanders work about the same hours annually as Irish, Poles, and Americans, according to the OECD data linked to below, but ahead of people in most OECD countries.
    
    If you click on the arrow at the top of the column you can see NZ is behind Mexico and Costa Rica, Korea and Russia. I found it surprising that we work fewer hours than Greeks, whose work habits are sometimes maligned for Greece’s problems in the EU.
    
    The Germans work fewer hours than us, but that will because economically, educationally, industrially, they are smart.

  I worked in a couple of offices in Bangkok where it was ten hours, six days a week.
  Eventually the expats at my last office said bugger this and we went to a forty hour week, with no loss in productivity.
  Ten hours presence at work was a better description.

For the school-children who will demonstrate against climate in-action

Instead of joining the ETS, farmers and growers will be able to design their own alternative scheme, with a check in 2022 to see if they are making proper progress.

New Zealand farmers won’t have to enter the country’s emissions trading scheme until 2025 and will then get a discounted rate of 95 per cent under a climate change deal struck with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

So without exact figures – “No one is doing this work, farm by farm. I’m incredibly proud of what we’re doing here today on behalf of New Zealand.” (Ardern) –
they have however decided on a 95% discount.

How was that figured determined, what is its relationship to reality when nothing else is worked out yet? – as to echo a crude expression, but perhaps accurately indicating its origin – qui a tiré ça de leur cul – “who pulled that out of their arse?”, pardon the French.

And the answer most likely is New Zealand First, but it is so illogical they haven’t dared take credit for it yet.
And I guess some things you can’t always take credit for, but you still benefit from them not happening, like hammering farmers too hard when you have guaranteed them support.

Realise, with gratitude, that someone saved you from drowning, without remembering it was them that pushed you in.

    So the guess it is not based any any logical calculation is correct.
    And the suspicion the illogicality is New Zealand First’s, as well as the farmer protectionism, is also correct.
    Not that being correct helps in any way – it just displays how power in politics, especially under the quirks of MMP, usurps any real usefulness to voters.
    And while Winston would preserve numbers with his paranoia wake-jumping bill, his own negotiations in policy changes it to beyond recognition as to what people voted for.

      There is no net gain to O2 production and Co2 absorption, if the Co2 is not locked into place as timber. Tree planting not followed by the felling of trees at maturity adds no long term value.
      
      Lichens, moss, grass and plankton still remain the largest Co2 sink. Grass is a greater Co2 sink than planting trees that are never harvested, and allowed to die.

  If that is so, why are Ardern and Co proposing to impose ANY penalty at all?

    The ETS does exclude agricultural emissions. The Climate Change Commission recommended that it be brought in. If it is brought in it would get a 95 percent discount consistent with the coalition agreement.
    
    BTW no country in the world incorporates on farm agriculture emissions in either an ETS or a carbon tax.

  Arguing over an Emissions trading scheme that is based on the lie of man-made climate change through Co2, is like negotiating with the mafia as to how you are going to pay their “tax” and at what rate.
  
  We should not legitimise this illegitimate attempt by our socialist robber government to tax the working back bone of this country. To cap it al off, Ardern is not even serious about reducing emissions, because she knows it is not the key issue.
  
  If she was she would:
  
  (a) Not be jet-setting off around the world, creating carbon emissions.
  (b) Since over population is the elephant in the room, she would limit her pro creation to one child, and actively campaign on that, encouraging others to do the same.
  (c) As a “sincere” socialist she would only accept a comfortable wage, donating the rest to achieving her stated goals. But no, she is flying all around the world on holidays paid for by the taxpayer.

After watching the second RWC semi-final last night, I have formed the following opinion:

We deserved to lose but considering the Poms played out of their skin, and for so long, and the fact they are not 6 Nations champions, and they were pretty average in the pools, and their aerobic capacity on Saturday was Lance Armstrong level, one has suspicions about the dietary supplements in the England camp last week.

And for the record, they’re all at it. You’re naive to think they’re not. Legal of course, but that just means “not banned yet” or even known about.

    The important thing to note though, is that the medication that they take for asthma has no performance-enhancing effect beyond combating the symptoms of asthma. That is, if you don’t have asthma and you take the drug, it’s not giving you any benefit.

This was a lot worse then 2007 RWC. Back to the future was ingrained in most Rugby followers minds with Saturdays’result.
Of course the rot set in back in 2016. On a cold winters day in Chicago. Isn’t hindsight a wonderful thing. NZs All Blacks lost to a very ordinary Irish Team.
Nothing has gone well since. That was a wake up call for All Blacks Management .
Sadly probably ignored.
Meanwhile back in England an Australian born coach of England was plotting the downfall of the All Blacks. He went through many many players checking their skills ad nausem.
Finally he got almost perfection with the type of player to take on NZs All Blacks in Japan RWC.
NZs were completely smashed and humilated on Saturday Night. The Carnival was over.
That was the end of the beginning on what started in Chicago in 2016.
Instead of living on All Black reputation like some of the All Black management have been doing in the past and present day. Take a leaf out of how a crafty wee Australian with the help of another also ran ex All Black coach plotted the demise and destruction of NZs All Blacks.
Lets hope NZs new ALL BLACK coach will stop look and listen and make sure that they will never suffer the embarrassment and igmony on how they were out thought and out manoeuvered in such a way they didnt seem to have the answers,or maybe they forgot to see the type of world beating rugby players the English coach recruited.

    GazzaW – I believe you are referring to the summer camp case, which eventually was properly investigated by the Police, a court case held, and the sentencing – as you indicate – is soon.
    
    The Dew Review is the non-Police inquiry set up by Ardern after she condemned an earlier inquiry that looked at it as being inappropriate to investigate a serious sexual assault case, which allegedly occurred in the perpetrator’s home, a staffer who has since voluntarily resigned from the position he held.
    
    What could be of interest is that if the Dew Review requires further action, will Ardern – to whom the report appears to go – have to then involve the Police, as can be argued should have been the correct action all along, or is there some other means of investigation, prosecution and justice that we plebs are unaware of?
    
    And if no action is recommended, how does Ardern properly dismiss the concern that was expressed as she finally became conscious of the seriousness of the issue when she reacted to the Spinoff article?

    The All Blacks’ attitude is that they weren’t defending the World Cup, but had to win it all over again. This time, they failed to achieve that. They are still the only team to have won it three times, and the only team to have won back-to-back.

These MPs have taken it upon themselves to “correct”, as they see it, a mistake made by the people. They have set themselves up as a counterweight to that democratic decision on the self-proclaimed ground that “they know best” – the classic claim by anti-democrats through the ages.

They seem not to understand the risk they are taking. If the British people once conclude that their elected representatives no longer recognise any duty actually to represent them, there is then the real danger that they will lose faith in the whole concept of representative democracy.

  Cameron should have had two referendums. One, do you want to leave and two, under which of the following scenarios. Either that or passed a Bill that would be law depending on the result of the referendum.

  All this posturing by Labour about planting trees is a crock, if it is not backed by solid committments to harvest the mature timber, leaving the Co2 locked into that timber. Otherwise we may as well leave the land in grass.

        It’s like watching Passchendaele live on TV without the guns.
        Rugby has to address this, if only for the health of the players.
        I suggest the three quarters from both sides take action, and gather in the middle of the field for a sitdown demonstration, focus group meeting, literary discussion, few beers or whatever. Glue themselves to the pitch and refuse to move until the IRB change the rules.

I see that the Christchurch convention centre is going to be called Te Pae. Personally I think that is a mistake. This facility will need to be heavily marketed internationally.

The new Christchurch Library is called Tūranga but I have never heard anyone refer to it as such.

      We have a Maori as an official language and English as the overwhelmingly dominant language.
      
      The obvious course if to have a different title for each language: one in Maori and one in English. When you are speaking Maori call it Te Pae, and when you are speaking English call it the Convention Centre.
      
      That’s not what’s happening. NZ is both trying to revive the moribund Maori language by foisting it and Maori customs on the whole population, and also by trying to Maorify New Zealand English into a pidgin language.

        In the State sector, public servants and work teams are increasingly being given Maori names. So an assistant to a Chief Executive might be called tāhuhu. And only refer to himself or herself by that title. Senior Management Teams are rarely called by that term. They will have a Maori term, eg Te Pūrengi. That trend is accelerating. I think within 5 years, all position and team titles in the State sector will be exclusively Maori language.

      There’s a Chinese centre down the road from me.
      It’s called the Chinese Community Centre plus it has a name in Chinese characters.
      There’s a Chinese lady who lives round the corner from me who only speaks Cantonese. She is often down at that centre. Whether she understands the name, I don’t know. A long time ago our office was sent construction drawings from Japan. A Chinese guy in the office reckoned he could interpret the characters because they had the same meaning in both Japanese & the Chinese he was familiar with.
      I don’t know if was full of shit or not, they were a beautiful set of drawings. Some American company was also involved in the project and their drawings were so awful a bloke had to come over from Texas to interpret the bloody things. So we could handle the Japanese language, but not the English.

        Chinese symbols are different from Japanese and Korean, but the Chinese group of languages all use the same written words. So if that elderly lady that could only speak Cantonese, but could read and write in Chinese, she would be able communicate with any other Chinese person regardless.     The streets of Melbourne are now dangerous, this event should never have happened and could have been easily avoided.
    These laws will be useless unless police management grow a backbone, won’t happen under present commisioner.

It’s a bit stupid having a “shoot to kill power”. Besides the military tactic of shooting to wound rather than kill (screaming wounded cause psychological stress that dead don’t), all police shooting should be to kill. If the intention is not to kill, then one should not even draw the weapon. And that is one reason I have doubts on the effectiveness of arming our police, most don’t want to kill. But all kudos to our Auzzie cousins that want shit wiped off the streets.

    From what I understand from that article the purpose is to stop terrorists using cars as weapons, not to take pot shots at thirteen year old kids in a stolen car speeding away from chasing police.

    And yet people can climb the dome at St Peter’s and a few others, and for that matter Mt Everest that is sacred to the Nepalese. I don’t get why a lump of rock suddenly becomes sacred. Same with new Zealand peaks where we can’t stand on the pinnacle of peaks. If I decide the Moon is sacred to me, does that mean no more Nasa visits? I don’t see how climbing a rock reduces its sacredness. ( I can understand excess erosion, or litter or someother measurable scientific degradation, but mumbo jumbo doesn’t cut it.

    Utterly untrue, chaos. The aborigines were very keen tour guides up the rock until recently. This BS about it being “the most sacred place” is just that, BS. All it is is the younger generation of aborigines flexing their muscles and trying to look important. They won’t be so thrilled when tourism numbers drop and they have less income.

Perhaps being Labour Day it is considered a slow news day at least by TVNZ as they offer this gem: “A Wellington parent’s group took to Parliament’s lawn early LAST WEEK with plush toys to show politicians their children are growing up worried about climate change” There seems to be a growing number of young people turning up for counselling for something called “eco-anxiety or climate change-induced anxiety.”
While most sane grown ups can weather the increasing flow of BS about man-made global warming the little people are not so well placed. Gone are the simple days where parents were enthralled as children started to learn about nature. When most added a swan plant to the garden to let them see first hand the life cycle of the monarch butterfly while helping the annual visitors increase their numbers. When bush, beach and the countryside were used like an extended family classroom with new delights at almost every step.
This man-made eco-anxiety could become a very serious problem but could be solved by getting back to the basics along with the fundamentals of also teaching the basics for sound learning. Sadly it might take a generation to turn this around but turn they must if only for the sake of the children.

  2/3 of testing is off season but testing will be done at the RWC for all finals one would assume. But they can only test for what they know as I said earlier.

  The smelter has a been a mainstay of the NZ economy. It purpose was to turn mountain water into foreign exchange by the conversion of bauxite into internationally exportable aluminium.
  
  It hasn’t outlived its usefulness.

    Exports of aluminium and aluminium products in the year ended June 30 were about $1.25 billion.
    
    With half a century or so of balance of payments deficits and now a soaring population, the NZ economy needs the smelter. It’s effectively the export of electricity.
    
    The Trump tariffs on steel and aluminium have hit China, by far the biggest aluminium producer, so it will be dumping product. Canada and Mexico have been exempted from the tariffs. I think Australia has, too, but not NZ. (Someone may elaborate on that).
