  At the time of the ruling, MacGregor welcomed Justice Hinton’s findings and said she hoped Craig would finally stop litigation against her.
  She said she had been “shackled” by the ongoing court action by Craig, which had seen her called as a witness in several of his defamation trials, and wanted the “ordeal to finally be over”.
  “It’s turned into a new form of harassment that has lasted longer and been more painful than I could have ever imagined,” she said
  
  The court is still considering what damages and costs, if any, will be awarded.
  
  I hope, of course, that the court bears in mind Ms MacGregor’s remarks and Craig’s stated intention to appeal – that is: to do it all again – in determining damages and costs.

  I know Colin Craig is wealthy and can afford to keep appealing forever, but when is a judge / court going to say to him “you have exhausted all your legal avenues, you have no grounds to appeal you would simply be wasting court time……now go away you horrible little man”.

On the front page of the Dominion Post this morning is an article about a student at Victoria University who died last year in his flat and it was three days before his body was discovered. That follows the terrible situation in another university recently where a student died and it was almost 8 weeks before his body was discovered.
And the question being asked is what is the level of pastoral care that is being given to the students?

Certainly for myself when I was at Massey University as a first-year student many years ago there was no pastoral care. You are in a hostel with maybe 100 or so other students. There was a hostel supervisor who had no idea who all the students were and who you hardly ever saw and whose sole duty appeared to be fining students who made too much noise. So essentially we were left to our own devices.

Both of my sons have gone to university recently and both of them went to the Baptist hostels, in Wellington and in Palmerston North. These hostels provided a family atmosphere where you had a married couple looking after around 35 students. There were community activities and expectations and pastoral care actually took place.

I think this is a model that other hostels need to look into? Smaller hostels with mature people who actually promote community and community expectations and provide pastoral care. Certainly something needs to be done to better look after these young students who often have left home for the first time.

  I can possibly understand someone’s presence not being noticed for a few days. There’s all sorts of reasons that could happen.
  However.
  Eight weeks unnoticed is just pitiful.
  That speaks of no close friends, family, colleagues – normal acquaintances of any kind.

    Since all students have smartphones, set up a system that detects when a male student has not gone online for more than 48 hours. For the case of female students, 12 hours.
    That ought to be enough to alert administration that something is not right.

  In the Wellington case, it was a man in his 30s living in a self-catered studio apartment (i.e., fairly private accommodation). I don’t find it at all strange that it may have taken a few days to notice his death (as sad as that is).

  No amount of pastoral care may help in such a situation. It is similar to reclusive people dying in social housing and not being found until much later on. Indeed excessive pastoral care would be an invasion of privacy. As it is, managements of such places may not be highly regarded by residents and residents my resent more intensive pastoral care.
  In any such situation part of the the answer could lie in technology. Card type hotel locks could be used for residents’ doors as well as for lobbies, lifts, etc. The lobby and lift card readers can be centrally monitored and management alerted if a card has not been used in say the last 12 – 24 hours (the exact records are confidential personal information and should only be accessed in exceptional cases).
  Indeed anyone living alone should set up a means where there would be assistance if they are inactive. My grandmother and a friend living across the road had a very simple arrangement. If either had not pulled the blinds up in the morning, the other would investigate. Very simple, but very effective.

  Scott, I disagree. It is the parents who are responsible for their children, not the accommodation provider. If the young adult decides to leave home to study then it is the parents job to maintain contact with their adult child. Where were the parents for eight weeks that they had no contact with him?

    I have to agree with this. 3 of my 4 kids have moved into a rental, and one is married, all between 23 and 32 years old. If my wife and I don’t hear from them at least once a week we check up on them. While I’m confident they can look after themselves (most of the time) I’m aware “stuff happens” and it costs nothing for the piece of mind. A text, a message on Facebook, a quick call, little to pay to know your kids are safe.
    Where were the parents, or some one he was accountable to?

    Some are mentally ill, some just have no parental instincts, some are just dead.

  The problem, Scott, is that for hundreds (possibly thousands) of non-baptist students the last thing they want to do is replace mum and dad with a new mum and dad (as it were). Most are champing at the bit for more freedom and independence, and most are, legally speaking, adults.

  Yes I was thinking about the story. I went to a residential college (the Oxford model) when I was 17. There was absolutely no “pastoral care” and I struggled.
  
  I think that these kids who struggle would be better off taking a couple of years off and starting university at 20 after travel or work. In my experience there is a (usually) a step up in resilience between a 20 year old and a 17/18 year old.

  By the way, the person in Wellington died in January. The university term hasn’t started in January. Plus he was a “mature” student.
  
  Is bad luck and personal choice. Not ideal but why does it have to be someone else’s fault?

    In New Zealand we call this ‘pastoral care’. You are entitled to be treated well, at all ages and at all levels of education.”

      Fair comment, SGA (which I was aware of), but, also from the VUW link you gave: If you’re a new academic staff member, you’ll be briefly introduced to the various support services available to students during the two-day Orientation to Academic Life at Victoria programme.
      
      The expression “pastoral care” is a snappy, historically Christian expression that implies a Christian component to the care that is offered. Care and support should be available to students without such implication.

  I seem to remember being 18 and going to university and at the end of the first term (we had terms in those days) I went home and parents saw me for the first time in four months. I suspect they assumed I would be alright and if they had not heard anything then everything was fine.

  I do agree with one aspect. If a power company offers power on more favourable terms to new customers (including one off incentives to switch), the company must proactively offer the same deal to existing customers or automatically give existing customers the same deal.
  There is a similar issue in the employment area. A new employee was paid more than an existing employee. An existing employee asked the new employee what his pay was and the new employee told him and the existing employee complained to management. The employment contracts stated that an employee’s pay rate was confidential. The ERA (I think) held that the new employer was in breach of confidence for revealing his pay and penalised the new employee for this. IMO this stinks.

    The employee was in breach of revealing his pay – the agreement between Employer & Employee is confidential. The new employee signed the IEA, he agreed to the terms. Case closed

      Please give a few of the ‘hundreds of reasons’. The main one that comes to mind is the employer has to meet the current market when hiring a new employee, which implies an existing employee should frequently test the job market which can call the existing employee’s loyalty into question. In other words employees are being penalised for loyalty. The only valid reason to pay a new employee with the same job description more is if a similar existing employee is underperforming.

        So i employ 18 “engineers” all have the same JD but some do service, some do projects, some do more design, some do more specialised work etc etc
        one JD covers all the tasks but because the tasks are so varied, complex, specialised amd voluminous we cant have a JD that defines every task and all the employees have the same title
        
        New Employee may be more experienced, have a larger area of responsibility, be required to do slightly different tasks, have a qualification / ticket the other doesn’t, travel more often, do more tech projects etc etc
        
        Exactly the same reason why some men or women get paid differently for the same “job”

        I accept that it’s difficult to generalise on such matters. But an employer should feel entitled to take various directly-related factors into consideration, and make his or her measured decision accordingly. In doing so, it generally pays to retain a diary note of how a specific decision was reached.

    I agree at least with the whole “good price” part of this, having just left one electricity and gas supplier for another. When the one I left got notice I was moving, they called me and could suddenly offer me a better deal! I had the same with my internet provider.
    BUT, we live in a “buyer beware” economy. From now on I’ll be reviewing my service providers annually or at the end of the current contract to see if I’m getting the best deal. I’ve also learned that the “best rate” can often be bettered when you talk to the supplier.
    On employment, if someone agreed to work for rate A, and someone else negotiates a higher rate, that’s not the company’s problem, “you” accepted that rate. If you aren’t happy with it ask for an increase or find another job. But this should be based on your being happy or not with your pay rate, not based on what others get.

      I suggest you check the price comparison website every 6 months. I do and if another supplier is offering better terms I go to my supplier and give them the opportunity of matching or bettering or i switch. It works well.
      
      I am also an investor in all the listed power companies. Genuine price competition drives better governance and management of organisations. Always has always will.
      
      The more competition the better for consumers. Thats why central and local government monopolies are the most inefficient operators.
      
      No competition means lazy habits and no customer focus.

        I do this every two years. My inclination is to not try and bargain with the existing supplier, although I do apply some non explicit pressure such as telling them to ‘sharpen their pencils’. However I will not bargain with the existing supplier after I have signed up with a new supplier.
        Incidentally I limit my choice to the ‘big five’ because I fear other suppliers could fall over when things are tough.

        I said where were they a month ago or six months ago.
        Clearly they didn’t have my best interests at heart and it was only because of opposition coming in that they were contacting us.
        
        We went with opposition and don’t do business with telcom even now. Shits.

        Same here some years ago. Saturn (as it then was) were stringing up their cable TV cable (and associated phone cable). Now, Telecom had lowered its prices where there was a live Saturn network. I sent two faxes off to Telecom asking for a better deal and got no reply. When the Saturn man called, I signed up for their phone service without question.

    They will! Genesis has made sure it is properly compensated for keeping two of the old steam turbines at Huntly available for dry years and other contingencies. They got shafted once by the Electricity Authority for this and have made sure it will not happen again. No one can tell Genesis that they have to keep these turbines operational (short of oppressive Government regulation).

A sad indictment on where “privacy” has delivered us to as a community.
With the “social media” abounding today with ease and economic low cost from the devices using facetime, skype , messaging, emails, I suppose two or three days for some but eight freakin weeks?????

  This is no personal reflection on John Key. He has done nothing wrong by accepting both directorships. What the Reserve Bank Governor is saying is the Chair of the NZ Board of a trans-Tasman bank (ie the ‘big four’) should be independent of the Australian parent. The Governor has a good point here. It is fundamental that in the event of a crisis involving the Australian parent that the crisis does not adversely affect the NZ operation. The Reserve Bank has already put measures in place to achieve this objective (eg separate IT systems required). Westpac had to make the most changes to comply as its NZ operation was very much subsidiary to and dependent on ‘Head Office’.

  Orr is out of line here. There are stacks of cross Tasman situations like this where a member of the board in NZ is also the member of the board of the parent. We have the exact same situation with the company I work for.
  Is he going to tell all companies the same thing? I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this were the same for some members of the ASB board wrt CBA, and Westpac NZ and Westpac Australia.

  A hostel is not a surrogate parent or guardian. It’s not even a mentor or teacher. It’s an accomodation provider. It’s role is to provide a roof over the students heads, and perhaps meals if that’s part of the arrangement. That’s it.
  
  It’s sad that this guy had so little social contact that nobody noticed him missing for eight weeks, but it is not the hostel’s role to be checking up on him. Speaking for myself, if my hostel had tried to do that I’d have absolutely hated it.

  If you have a facility with 1,000 students, that means that over a 10-year period, the chances are that there will be 1 suicide.

Allowing an apology to Maori for Cook is trouble making. Different cultures, different rules.
We expected if a foreigner appeared over the side of a small boat with a spear making hostile gestures that their intent was life threatening. Killing in self preservation has been excusable since ancient times. Maori and others have blood feuds–a life for a life and these can never be satisfied. Every life taken in satisfaction requires another. Utu is part of that regime.
Muskets when discovered made a quick end but left the user or family open for later return fire. That’s what brought about the Treaty of Waitangi. A change to British law was needed or their society would be wiped out completely.

Utu is being advocated again by some ignorant people seeking to find a false identity. Now money is being demanded too as that can be freshly repeated each generation salving the wounds which can never be healed except by loving tolerance. The Waitangi Tribunal are masters of remembered dissatisfaction.

  NZ was inhabited long before Maori arrived. Thousands of years in fact. Not only is their evidence kept locked away, but the colonists learnt of it from Maori themselves who were proud and boasted of their conquests of dispatching the incumbents. Winning battles was the measure of success back then, along with taking of heads and eating the victims.
  
  What a wicked web of deceit is being performed by those who re-write history. The treaty between Maori Elders and colonists brought peace and an end to cannibalism, and the preying on non cannibalistic tribes.
  
  The past is the past. Maori elders would role in their graves if they knew how the past is being re-written, and Maori being made to look like victims rather than the proud warriors they once were. Warriors who loved to defeat and butcher their opponents, but then had to admit defeat to a race that was more civil and that brought inter tribal peace for the first time in hundreds of years.

    Bullshit, there’s no credible evidence for human occupation of what is now NZ before around 1250 CE. Just recently re-analysis of new sample from a contested site that had some rat remains classified as from around 8-900 has decided that the laboratory treatment of the original samples was responsible for the early date, and retested old sample plus brand new samples from the same site all gave the same 1250-1280 dating.
    
    This doesn’t mean that there wasn’t, just we have zero evidence of any prior inhabitation.
    
    Maori oral history of a red-haired people are traceable to myths brought with them from Polynesia where similar stories are told. These are the Polynesian equivalent of “elves”, they may represent an ancient remembrance of another people in a distant place, but a current prior people.

      Clearly you don’t do any research. There are literally hundreds of pieces of evidence and artifacts from Cape Reinga to Bluff, many verified by DNA and carbon dating, that point to in-habitation going back thousands of years. You just don’t want it to be that way.

        I repeat, there is no credible evidence for human habitation in NZ before around 1250 CE. If you have any that is properly verified, spill it. I’ve looked, and there ain’t. No DNA, no carbon dated sites – a c-800 CE date on rat remains has been overturned by new samples and analysis.
        
        There are some interesting theories but nothing verified. For that you’ll need something definite like a carbon dated site with evidence of human or foreign animals or material. For example a lot of the earliest dates are derived from rat bones and rat-chewed seeds as these are quite distinctive. Although a self population is remotely possible it is generally accepted that rats arrived with humans on ships.

  According to the AC and NC Begg book, in that incident, it’s interesting that Cook’s crew captured three young warriors. Cook put them ashore a couple of days later but they told Tupaia that they were afraid of where Cook was dropping them off as it was the territory of a rival tribe and they would be killed and eaten. Basically a war like tribe attacked Cook’s crew and they retaliated. Perhaps an over reaction but what would you do if wild savages were coming at you with spears and other weapons.

Dickhead of the Day Award goes to Guyon Espiner for making a story about the Reserve Bank Governor (who is wanting to ensure the 4 major Australian banks double the capital they hold to ensure greater financial resilience and minimise risk to Kiwis) to be all about John Key.

Yes the headlines on radio and online is about Sir John Key “Former PM John Key may have to relinquish banking role” and “Former Prime Minister Sir John Key could be forced to stand down from one of his banking roles because of a potential conflict of interest.”

Turns out although Adrian Orr is concerned about people (such as Sir JK and Mr Doug McKay) being on both Australian and NZ bank boards, Mr Orr is quoted as saying that whilst he is “considering making banking directors choose between New Zealand and Australia, he was not touting the move as a high priority and no decisions had been made”.

So there we have it folks, Guyon Espiner plays up the “John Key” issue when in fact it isn’t a high priority for the Reserve Bank Governor – the emphasis of Espiner’s reporting should have been the financial risk aspects that Mr Orr is very concerned about.

  I get it that a person using the lift wont want to be in the lift, let alone with food or drink, when a dead person is being transported, but since when did we start to use Religion / Beliefs as a justification for doing an everyday thing like carry your water bottle, lunch in a lift?   Actually, I think the food and drink thing is health related. Since you don’t know the cause of death, how recent, etc. for the previous dead occupants, if the food/drink container isn’t well sealed there’s a risk of contamination. That part at least is quite reasonable.
  But I must say, “respect the lift” why, it’s just a blooming machine, it doesn’t care. I’m happy to respect the dead body if I were in the lift with it. I’d be surprised however if they transport bodies with anyone other than relatives or close associates.

  The NZ market is far too small for Tesla to even worry about delivering on time if at all. I recently returned from travelling around Europe, Switzerland in particular has a noticeably high number of Tesla’s and a high proportion of model 3’s. This was also the case for Sweden and Denmark. Include the US and in particular California and Tesla can barely keep up. The watermelons here have no clue about market driven demand and think Tesla et-al will be salivating at the prospect of selling a few hundred gay electric cars in NZ..I seriously doubt it!

    Sooner than you think! I heard on the 10am news that they have a protest planned for Wellington on Monday which will include blocking streets. This from the Herald:

    There is no audio recording of Presidential calls with other leaders.
    
    There is a word-for-word transcript that’s prepared by stenographers. That has not been released (so far) for the Ukraine call.
    
    Then there is a memo summarising the call that’s prepared by people listening in to the call, and is distributed to Cabinet members etc. That is what has been released (so far) for the Ukraine call.
    
    Note that the call was 30 minutes long, and generous read of the *memo*, including time for translators, totals no more than 15 minutes. There will be a lot of extra detail in the actual transcript.

A mate of mine in Australia has more money than sense. He has three EVs including a plug in SUV. Of course he lives in NSW where almost all electricity is produced by coal. So that was a no go. So he has spent $30,000 on a series of solar panels and batteries to power his house and to charge his vehicles.

I pointed out that most of us don’t have circa $30,000 to blow on virtue signalling. 🙂

Winston Peters’ voters will be unhappy that the Labour Coalition is opening the door wider for refugees from Africa and the Middle East – more Muslims!

Radio NZ reports:

Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway has announced as part of the government’s three-year refugee policy that it will get rid of the requirement for Middle Eastern and African refugees to have relatives already residing here.

The announcement has come just months before the refugee quota will jump from 1000 to 1500 for 2020.

This is a victory in part for Murdoch Stephens, leader or the “Doing our Bit” campaign to greatly increase NZ’s refugee intake.

He’s organised small demonstrations, and NZ’s Leftist media has published his opinion pieces. Murdoch uses the honorific, “Dr” , which relates to a Massey Ph.D. in ” on critical theory and climate change”. Stephens describes himself as editor of a small NZ “anarchist” publishing firm.

Murdoch has urged that white South African farmers be denied entry to New Zealand as refugees.

    Schiff’s tweet from before he claims to have known about the WB complaint exactly mirrors (character perfect in it’s omissions of words and punctuation – almost impossible by chance) the misstatement of a Ukrainian government website that is contained in the WB complaint itself.
    
    That’s prima facie evidence that Schiff knew of and had seen the written complaint, and that dates to before the complaint was made to the IC IG. That makes the complainant not a “Whistleblower” but a leaker and in fact an inside spy. It also makes Schiff complicit in his spying.

Australian College of Midwives (ACM) also has a statement:
“The ACM would like to acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander custodians across the nation on whose lands our midwives reside and work and honour the collective elders past and present.”

What have these statements got to do with delivering healthcare, or any service?

Obviously many local councils and universities also have this statement.

It is a very rare breach of the internal secrecy of the party and will be a blow to party leader Winston Peters.” It comes just a week before New Zealand First’s annual conference and days after its president, Lester Gray, resigned after citing concerns about the party’s handling of its donations and finances. Leaked emails reveal a standoff between party members and Martin. Members were upset about the fact Peters had filed to sue the National Party over their alleged leaking of his Superannuation information just one day before the 2017 election. A member sought an explanation from Peters as to how true and fair the Coalition negotiations were, given Peters was in the process of suing National while attempting to hammer out a deal to be in Government. None of us were aware of the papers filed by the Rt. Hon. Winston Peters because that was his private business and nothing to do with the formation of a government. None of us, particularly the Rt. Hon. Winston Peters, are that shallow,” the email went on to say. Martin also appeared upset at the implication that Peters conducted the coalition negotiations without seeking advice from his caucus. She also said she was “deeply offended” that members questioned not only the character of the Peters but had, by implication, suggested she, NZ First MPs and board members were puppets in these negotiations. Documented minutes of a party meeting in November 2017 show members levelling criticism at Peters. One member said New Zealand First needed to “come up with solutions and start a succession plan post Winston Peters”.Another said: “Resources for the campaign were not provided, no cogent policies, signs unreadable, distribution of sign issues, listing was confidential, no plan B (or even A) for Jacinder [sic]”. After the 2017 election, Helen Peterson – a long-time party member, who has stood for election three times – wrote a report titled “NZ First Concerns and issues regarding Election 2017” – she has been approached for comment. “A number of members nationwide have been extremely disappointed in the way in which the 2017 election campaign was handled,” it said.The documents reveal members felt the party’s list showed disrespect for hardworking, loyal, hardworking and long-serving members, and favoured candidates who had personal relationships with those who select the list placement. Members also complained the list process was sexist, as only three of the candidates in the top 18 were female. It also shows members thought the campaign was unorganised, lacked leadership and had no strategy. New Zealand First candidates were “for the most part unsupported” and given minimal mentoring or support by the board. “The extent and magnitude of the issues demonstrate how the party will remain a third party for the foreseeable future unless there is an enormous shift towards accountability, adherence to the constitution and respect for its members.” Asked for comment, a spokesman for Peters said the Deputy Prime Minister “has no comment and party related documents, if that is what this is, should be referred to the party for comment”. Can anyone advise when the next political poll is due out? They seem to have very scarce over the last 6 months. Call me cynical, but does the fact that this shambles of a government has been performing so abysmally have anything to do with it?

Some commentators are saying his speech was a significant one in terms of anti-globalism and climate change hysteria. It follows closely on from his UN speech.

My partner was in ‘one of those moods’ when he walked in….said he was just listening to that useless Peter Dunne talking about “how much he agrees with this guvmint increasing the refuggee numbers allowing in even more asylum seekers from the Middle East and Africa”.
As he said, do they never give any thought to the poor bastards that this lot is slaughtering in their own countries – like the white farmers and christian minorities?

Once again the fringe community wants to control other people’s speech. If they don’t like the topic, don’t go.

I especially like the statement “but it wasn’t appropriate for them to hold it at a university, which was supposed to support transgender students.”

The university is supposed to support ALL students, a concept completely over the grasp of intersectional intelligence
