    Why should the taxpayer pay for this QC’s report? I would be happy that the taxpayer pay for a Police investigation and report, but not a private one to which the public will probably never have access.

    Maria specializes in HR and is Chair of a Health Committee so not obviously an ideal candidate to – Carefully & Impartially INVESTIGATE, the kind of sexual and procedural misconduct that is perceived to have occurred in the PM,s Office and right under her nose it seems – if ardern didn’t know perhaps she needs a white stick and hearing aids, a functioning brain would also help.

    Especially when the client, in this case, the Labour Party, sets the Terms of Reference and refuses to publish them.
    
    Remember the Noel Ingram QC into the activities of Taito Philip Field? The Labour Party, led by Helen Clark and Michael Cullen, set the Terms of Reference of that investigation. When it was concluded, National successfully applied for an Urgent Debate in the House. Here’s how Gerry Brownlee began:
    
    GERRY BROWNLEE (Deputy Leader—National) : I move, That the House take note of a matter of urgent public importance. This has to be the most cleverly veiled allegation of corruption against Mr Field that could possibly have been produced given the strictures placed upon the inquirer.
    
    I think it is worth noting that the inquirer in this case, Dr Noel Ingram, at the very start of his report notes: “… given the nature of my appointment I have not enjoyed the power to compel the attendance of witnesses before me to give evidence, or to administer oaths in relation to those who I do examine or interview, or to compel the production of documents. Those limited powers are to be contrasted with the powers to administer oaths, to compel attendance, and to compel the production of documents which are enjoyed by Royal Commissions and by Commissions of Inquiry appointed under the Commissions of Inquiry Act 1908.” What that tells us is that this report is about the preferred spin that those around Mr Field want to put on this matter—that there is no basis, apparently, for a general belief that those who are party to this have told the truth. What it tells us is that they did not have to tell the truth—that it was OK for them to stump up to Dr Ingram and tell him whatever they thought would be best for Mr Field.

    Dr Noel Ingram QC found just what Labour intended him to find; nothing incriminating. By holding an inquiry with exceedingly narrow ToR, they hoped Field would be vindicated. To his credit, Dr Ingram didn’t take that lying down. And let’s not forget that Field was later found guilty and imprisoned.
    
    As an aside, it prompted Michael Cullen’s infamous defence of Field, which is worth repeating as a reminder of how Labour trivialises criminality within its own ranks:
    
    So Mr Field has some matters to work through with the Labour leadership and the Labour whips. But he works incredibly hard on behalf of his constituents. He has people coming to him from all over Auckland for assistance, not just in immigration cases but in many other cases. He works harder on those matters than I suspect the entire National Party caucus does on constituency cases. If that is what he is guilty of, then I am sure he is happy to plead guilty to working hard on behalf of his constituents.
    
    Thank goodness the High Court jury, which heard actual evidence against Field, unlike Dr Ingram, understood right and wrong better than Michael Cullen!

  Chlöe Swarbrick in saying, “We need more climate change protestors to take to the streets” was apparently talking about more school children to skip lessons to march, demanding the Government do more to counter climate change – the Government being Chlöe Swarbrick and colleagues.
  And this present protests aim to disrupt people enough to gain their co-operation?

    There were many parents who marched with their children a couple of weeks back. I would like to see these parents walk their talk by ditching their very large SUVs (they seem to be a favourite of prosperous parents with school aged children). Driving your kids to and from a climate change protest in a V6 SUV is a bit odd to say the least.
    
    If you love your giant $120k SUV and intend to keep it keep it, at least have the good grace to not attend climate protests.

      That reminds me of the Union petrol tanker drivers strikes. Most petrol stations were forced to close during the strike. Only a few family owned stations could open. Drivers union delegate pulls up in big V8 to small gas station to fill up during strike. He was recognised and refused service, and told by the owner in no uncertain terms to sod off.

  Genuine questions to anyone with an insight to Police thinking – why are they not arresting them for disturbing the peace, stopping traffic, etc
  These 100 people are probably preventing 1-2000 people from travelling to their place of work who have paid their taxes to have the Police uphold the law. I don’t get why they are not arresting them and allowing law abiding citizens get on with their lives as they are entitles to do

  Wellington is a good target city, school holidays and mostly public servants affected. Those protestors seem retired, on school holidays or unemployed. They probably wouldn’t try this in Southland or areas where workers actually would take action to get to their jobs.

If they are illegally blocking the road, and if the police do not arrest them after warning them to move, then the police are enabling them too. Bunch of degenerate brainwashed waste of spaces. Namibia is a country of black people, yet here we have a team which is about 80% comprised of blonds with Afrikaans names and who couldn’t quite make the Springboks.

    All the Tongans born in NZ have at least one Tongan parent.

        stephie you are correct in that the Springboks were white only during most of the apartheid era. I was not disputing that at all.
        
        Danie Craven, the figurehead of SA Rugby in the 1970s said there would be black Springboks over his dead body.
        
        However, even if there had been completely integrated rugby there would have been very few black rugby players.
        
        SA blacks are, generally, smaller and less fast. They also prefer playing soccer (always have and still do).
        
        When the Springboks started to include token non-whites they really had to scrape the barrel. About the only “shining star” black Springbok turned out to be a drug cheat.
        
        Would there have been some black players in the Springboks without apartheid? Maybe a few, but very few.
        
        As you will undoubtedly have noticed with our own teams, sporting ability/preferences does follow racial lines. Here Polynesians are vastly over-represented in rugby. Hardly any Polynesian sailors though.
        
        And still, I’m 1not sure what that has to do with Namibia.

  Maybe the working immigrant can pay triple tax to offset parents free ride to a pampered life on the tax payer.

Various things in Saturday’s Dom-Post irked me.
1. Editorial (author not disclosed) ‘Have Nats run out of good ideas?’ – I do not think left wing journos are in any position to critique Nats strategy for 2020.
2.’Students’ safety must come before balance sheets’. This is a gross over-simplification of a very sad issue. If more money is to be poured into more student welfare it either has to be met by the students (via loans) or the taxpayer. Also excessive welfare would be resented. It begs the question of whether such welfare should be extended to student fears especially in the light of a sad event during the weekend. Years ago, Otago students strenuously rebelled against the University’s attempt to exercise control over student flats (mixed flatting was the main concern then!).
3. ‘Key’s dual ANZ’s roles ‘serious mistake” – Why pick on John? Seems the NZ chairs of the other three subsidiaries of Oz banks are also on the parent boards. Anyway I doubt John would be bossed around by the Oz board to the NZ operation’s detriment, especially as he did a ‘smiling assassin’ trick on the Oz CEO of the NZ operation.
4. Houseowner 1.3M out of pocket over deck addition. Seems much of the expense was because of his stubbornness and anger – the matter could have been damaged controlled for much less. There was not much investigative journalism here. A properly researched and dispassionately reported article would have been of great value to the community.

  Agreed. As soon as global oil prices went up after the Saudi bombing, prices at the pump went up 6c/l. Since then global prices have returned to where they were pre-bombing, and even lower, but pump prices are still inflated.

    Quite a good part of that increase has been the sharp fall in the New Zealand / US dollar exchange rate.
    In mid-July the exchange rate was about 0.6750. Today it is around 0.6300. That is a drop of 6.7%. Remember that oil is traded in US dollars so a drop in the exchange rate makes the price here higher.
    Robertson is happy of course. It raises the tax take for him to squander.

This morning’s NZ Herald has a font-page article about “short-term housing for the homeless.” Reading the article, one gets the impression that homeless people are poor and vulnerable, but no different from everyone else.
How would a “homeless” person be different from a typical tenant?
What are their special needs?

On one hand, you can demand that homeless people be treated no differently from other people, but on the other hand, you can also demand that homeless people behave like other people. If they really are equivalent, then this should not be a problem.

So, in your experience, what makes homeless people “special”?

  My neighbour is a detective in the police. He tells me the overwhelming majority (<80%) of the "homeless" beggars in the Auckland CBD are convicted sex offenders.
  
  Apparently the sex offenders are the hardest to house, for instance because of the duty of care the various social housing providers have to the other tenants in group homes.

        Yep – and they better not get any on any cotton containing fibre (jeans, cotton etc) rather spectacular exothermic reaction can occur.
        
        And they’re also lucky the cyanide in the acrylate is polymerized and not free as polymerization renders it fairly non-toxic.

        Yes and no… I have access to 100% acetone in my lab, that’s what’s needed. Nail polish remover is between 15 and 65% acetone, along with alcohol and oil, get the higher end one and it will likely do the job.

A species of Ecuadorian coconut has been successfully propagated here by Auckland nurseryman and South American plant enthusiast Dick Endt. Its seeds bear a striking resemblance to fossilised New Zealand coconuts dating from 10-45 million years ago.

During much of the past 65 million years—the Tertiary period—New Zealand’s climate was significantly wanner than it is today. Reef corals flourished in northern waters and coconut palms grew over much of the country as mean annual temperatures hovered between 20 and 25°C. (Auckland’s mean annual temperature today is 15°.)

Evidence that a more subtropical New Zealand once supported coconuts takes the form of fossil coconuts which are periodically washed up on Coopers Beach, near Mangonui, after being eroded from lignite and sandstone reefs that lie just offshore. The nuts were first reported in the scientific literature in 1926, and have since been found not just in Northland but in inland sites in South Canterbury, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. They are about the size of walnuts, but have been flattened by long burial in the marine sediments where they lodged so many million years ago. Carbonisation has rendered them black and as hard as bullets.*

        There are arguments both ways. I have had some pleasant train trips (rarely bus). But I have also had trips where I have been exposed to screeching children and people talking on their cell phones. Good luck with working.
        
        In a car, I can at least listen to a podcast or Mahler. I am sure that is much better for my brain.

Concerning ‘Extinction Rebellion’, (and as I’m not sure if its been published here before) this might be of interest.

Based on what is in the article, it is reasonable to surmise that the woman portrayed as being a leader of the Wellington protests isn’t doing what she is doing ‘for the good of the planet’, and that her bank balance has probably recently received a substantial ‘contribution’ from off-shore sources…

It always comes back to the money…

Perhaps the fire brigade can get a glazier to cut around them and send them on their way attached to the window. Sure it would cost ANZ a new window but that’s probably not a big deal.

  I am trying to work out why people go to the trouble of glueing themselves to, for example a window, then a short while later unglue themselves so they can make a nuisance of themselves elsewhere.
  Surely these people would garner some respect if they had some strength of character and stayed glued for the earlier of a couple of days or the loosening of their bladder/bowels!

If you were a leftie looking for a transformational government under the red flag, you would be angry too. * A Timaru resident who recently made a comparison of petrol prices in 15 towns and cities during a business trip along the east coast of the South Island believes Timaru residents are paying “excessive” amounts at the pump.

“The prices are shocking,” Kirk Martin said.

Having taken note of prices as he travelled from Picton to Timaru, and noting the price of fuel on the app Gaspy, Martin said he was riled up to see prices ranged from $2.15 to $2.28 with Timaru easily the highest at $2.36…..

Gull New Zealand general manager Dave Bodger said it was “shocking” motorists in Timaru were being charged as much as $2.36 at the pump.

“Timaru retailing fuel at $2.36 is shocking,” Bodger said.

“We look to make money by offering a lower price and making people happy. Other people make money by having a high price but why people make their prices high is entirely up to them.”*

Well China has done A LOT more than just this in their never-ending campaign to annihilate human rights. So maybe this is the last straw.

Hundreds of human rights lawyers (not even dissidents, just the LAWYERS who defended people) were snatched by gestapo all over China in what is known as the 709 Crackdown.

One of those lawyers, Wang Quanzhang was sentenced to 4.5 years for “subversion of state power”. But that’s not enough. China actually went after Wang’s 6-year-old son, forcing him out of his school and banning any other school from taking him in.

A dissident, [Wang Bingzhang](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wang_Bingzhang_(dissident)) was kidnapped by Chinese agents in Vietnam and sentenced to life in prison after a closed trial that lasted 1 day.

A man wore a t-shirt with the word “Xitler” on it and was disappeared. Eventually he was tried for “subversion of state power” while barred from meeting with lawyers

Another man, Wang Meiyu hold up a placard calling for Xi’s resignation & democracy. He was arrested for “picking quarrels”. He ended up dead in custody.

A woman live streamed herself splashing ink on a Xi poster. She was disappeared. Her last social media update: “Right now there are a group of people wearing uniforms outside my door. I’ll go out after I change my clothes. I did not commit a crime. The people and groups that hurt me are the ones who are guilty”. Later on there was report of her being sent to a psychiatric hospital

After the ink-splash woman’s disappearance her father made a series of broadcast to call attention to her plight. He ended up getting taken away by the police in the middle of a live stream

5 people associated with a Hong Kong bookstore that sold titles such as “Xi Jinping and His Six Women” were disappeared. Only one managed to escape back to HK. He held a press briefing to tell the world about his kidnapping by China. He’s now in exile in Taiwan. The other 4 are still somewhere in China.

Now imagine what’s really happening in the real concentration camps where millions of Uyghurs are being held. Imagine how bad the true situation is.

Hui mosques have been forcibly renovated or shuttered, schools demolished, and religious community leaders imprisoned. Hui who have traveled internationally are increasingly detained or sent to reeducation facilities in Xinjiang.”
