His surname, Intercisus, is derived from the Latin for “cut into pieces,” which refers to the manner of his martyrdom: he was slowly cut into twenty-eight pieces. He survived this loss of limbs before being ultimately beheaded.
James Intercisus is the patron saint of lost vocations and torture victims.

        Because you live in a majority atheist country, with rapidly aging and declining theist population and far more people losing religion than gaining it – the various articles of faith just aren’t convincing in an age of near universal education and reason. Nearly all active theists were indoctrinated in youth by adults who brooked no dissent – far before they had any of critical or emotional tools required to resist such an effort.

Man jailed 4 years 9 months for 41 tax offences costing the long suffering taxpayer $1M.
Two things upset me about this case.
1. He would file GST returns where he would get a refund, but not where he had GST to pay. What I would like to know is why did IRD let this happen?
If he had not filed previous GST returns then why was he paid a GST refund.For that matter why did he get a GST refund when he had other tax matters outstanding.
2. Taxpayers are having to pay $250,000 or so to keep him in prison (may be less as he will probably get early parole). I object to white collar crims going to jail (apart from a month or two ‘shock treatment’).
Instead there should be a nasty cocktail of non custodial penances such crooks should face. I have in mind very strict probation conditions including loss of voting rights, being told where to live, driving restrictions or ban (no Porches, Beemers etc). Also restrictions on cash availability and wider powers to bust family trusts.

    Because its an honesty system. NZ is or was a high trust society. You get a form you fill it out and make payment. The IRD process the form and payment. Thats 90% of what IRD do.
    
    The people caught by the system are usually very stupid or unlucky. A couple of recent cases of massive tax evasion, involving millions, were only uncovered by Police investigation in unrelated activity.
    
    Income tax and GST is largely voluntary in NZ. Well at least the rates are. Most people pay the correct amount of tax. NZ is a high trust society.
    
    However in some tax jurisdictions with massive immigration from low trust shit holes the tax take is fast dropping and its becoming a problem.

      They now have this swanky new computer system and I thought it would be used to catch up much quicker with GST and PAYE fraud than in the past.
      Compare with a case where a NZ resident used a foreign issued credit card in NZ. The IRD system matched this and the resident was asked very awkward questions about not declaring overseas income to IRD (which is taxable in NZ less foreign taxes paid).

    Apart from peterwn’s implication that this crook’s culpability is somehow lessened because he got away with it for too long, the idea that ‘white collar crims’ should be exempt from prison is abhorrent.
    Firstly, if prison is ever a deterrent, it would be for the white collar type who is more likely to be afraid of jail.
    Secondly, prison offers a good level of protection against their continued offending. Many fraudsters are serial offenders – being locked up tends to put at least a temporary stop to that activity.

      I did not imply the crook’s culpability is diminished because of the time IRD took to catch up with the fraud. I was making the point that IRD should have been on to the GST issue much quicker. If IRD has not received a GST return for (say) May and June, then surely a GST return received seeking a refund for (say) July and August should have set the alarm bells ringing. It is hardly rocket science.
      I know that the thought of white collar crims avoiding prison is abhorrent, but with what I have in mind, they would find appropriate community based punishments so nasty that they would wish they were in prison. People on home detention consider it worse than imprisonment. These crims should also be required to report to Aotea Square or Midland Park at 11am once a week and be locked in a cage for 4 hours. However I would not allow rotten fruit throwing, after all, this is the 21st century.

  Sorry mate but you clearly do not understand how GST works.
  
  When you buy something you pay GST. If it is a business expense then you can claim that GST back.
  
  When you sell something in NZ then you gather GST and have to give that to IRD.
  
  If the amount you gather on the IRD’s behalf is less than the amount of GST you’re claiming back then you get a refund.
  
  For example, I have sometimes done almost all my business overseas, so I charge no GST on that. However I still have legitimate purchases in NZ: pen and paper, computer, printer cartridges,… I can still claim the GST back on those. Therefore I end up getting a GST refund from IRD.
  
  At the moment most of my customers are in NZ and I charge them GST, so it is the other way around and I am paying GST to IRD.

    ??????? I think I know quite well how GST works.
    There are various organisations where in any GST period (which may be two or six monthly) the GST collected on income is less than the GST paid on expenses. Churches are a typical example. Also in any business a significant capital expenditure may result in more GST being paid than received. Also a business like yours with significant exports. The GST taxpayer is entitled to a GST refund in such cases.
    Now some people fraudulently ‘engineer’ GST refunds but IRD is pretty good at catching the more blatant instances.

Last year Wellington was named the #1 best city in the world for quality of life – Deutsche Bank’s Mapping the World’s Prices. Got a little bit of local airtime.

2019 Wellington is down in the ranking, now #2. Hard pressed to see any mention in the media since the results were released a few months ago.

The rating doesn’t include social and cultural factors, being more financially, crime and consumer oriented. But notable in the New Zealand context because it does give weighting to our big issue of housing affordability, calculated as income to property price ratio.

And even though Welly fell to #2 (how terrible) we got a special mention as a standout on housing affordability. Not hearing that from our local and central politicians. Possibly politicians are not too keen on letting voters know how much Wellington incomes are out of whack with the rest of New Zealand. And why that might be the case …

Why does the NZ Herald insist on replacing commonly used English words with Te Reo ones? (They must want to “right past wrongs” or “show proper respect” or “atone for the sins of their ancestors” or something like that.)

Any thoughts?

    Hu’s and kotis–pidgin Maori for the kiddies.
    A language fossilised since 1835 has little general relevance in NZ. It does embody tribal history and land rights, titles etc. That is proper on the Marae but useless elsewhere.
    
    Young Maori disaffiliated from their former tribes are now stirring the pot of Pakeha guilt. Their olds got a handsome payoff in Waitangi settlements and they want their share too. We are far from being one people when money is involved.

Notice fake news Dominion Post has allocated a full back page regarding the alleged phantom racist, maybe a never was, shouting so called alleged “racist” remarks to one of the English Cricketers. Interesting it appears that no one else in the crowd of circa 4,000 heard anything.

  Through his actions the Foundation’s reputation is at an all time low and it will now find donations will dry up and increased (costly) scrutiny will be required and for quite some time.

      He’s a well known academic hitch hiker. That’s someone who gets appointed to research teams or advisory groups usually based on a perceived need for their expertise. Being appointed a Professor of Maori Health without any medical qualification is outstanding troughsmanship and guarantees him a place at many tables (including the French Cafe).

I do not watch TV news nowadays as a rule.
TV3 news and Third Rock from the Sun are equally believable.
And the others not far behind.
Its not just the faces, its all the teams in the background, editors,
subbies all with the same agenda.
Look at the Trump debacle.
He got elected and even before the election the democrats were trying
to destroy him.
What did we get day in and out?
Anti Trump rhetoric.
Why???
Dunno.
We’re not voting, we’re not affected, its the US.
We have our own clowns who for some reason do not have the same level
of scrutiny by the media that is so keen on matters US

  Depending on the situation, public transport is sometimes cheaper and/or quicker and/or more convenient than private transport. You can read a book on a train, but not while driving a car. There are also people who have no choice because they do not have access to a private vehicle.

So desperate were RNZ to try to paint National’s discussion document on gangs in a bad light that it found a gang member who said any gang strike force would likely breach his human rights, and a lawyer from the metropolis of Grafton, Australia, who was keen to say a similar NSW force was having little success.
If ever you wanted an argument against further State control/amalgamation of the MSM, it is there.
No mention at any point of the rights of citizens being breached by crime/violence/stand-over tactics/ drug manufacturing and supply.

    Any “gang-busting” activities by the police or other national security forces needs to be carefully planned, monitored and controlled.
    
    Force is a powerful drug (the gangs know this). I should be fearful of the New Zealand government becoming addicted to it.

      Interestingly though, Labour only had a majority over National in the party vote of less than 400 votes. William Wood will have a much higher profile in Palmerston North than 2017 candidate Adrienne Pierce, who moved from Hawke’s Bay to take up the candidacy. I doubt he can turn that candidate majority around in one election, but I see his selection for 2020 as a strategic move for a winning campaign in 2023.

Adrienne Pierce was (and still is) a nobody in Palmy North; why she was ever selected remains a mystery other than to observe that National had given up on winning the electorate. I think that Young William has a sporting chance ahead of the clumsy Lees-Galloway despite the large voting base of Lab/Greens at Massey University.   I see Barry Soper has also written another incomprehensible anti-National article because he doesn’t like Simon Bridges tough on gangs policy. Soper says gangs are into drugs and operate on the wrong side of the law but “not all of them”. (Could he name which gangs are not operating on the wrong side of the law?) And then says “Consider this: more than half a billion dollars a year is generated by organised crime in this country and many prefer a pierre cardin suit rather than a patch. ” ( So. Half a billion dollars from organised crime is the key point here Barry owning a suit is irrelevant. Even in a suit your still a criminal) . And his conclusion therefore is that the gangs are an easy target so “it’s time to cast the law and order net wider”?!
  Who would Soper target instead that benefits more from illegal proceeds of organised crime and causes more violence and harm than gangs?

Up until a year or so ago there used to be adds on TV showing two young Maori boys sitting in a car talking about how their dads drove when they were “blazing” (or smoking dope).

They were very well done and were clearly designed to advocate against driving when stoned.

I haven’t seen these for some time, has Chloe and her agenda had some part to play here? Just wondering.

The sector attracts people of poor ethics morals and judgement at the governance and senior management level.

Their ears and eyes are painted on when it comes to principles of good governance management.

They display utter contempt and arrogance and live in a self important bubble where they are right and everyone else is wrong.

  Nobody is ever prosecuted;
  Nobody is ever fired.
  
  It is a club about making mo ey, with dubious morals and stuff the public.

  The core problem in policing the gangs is the inadequacy of the legislation governing organised criminal groups. It was emasculated by the Court of Appeal, and the Police have been very hesitant about committing resources to large-scale investigations that could fall over because of legal issues. You don’t need to crack down on gangs specifically, just anybody who engages in organised criminal activity, and to do so, you first need the proper legislative tools. But I guess promising to tidy up the law isn’t as sexy as Strike Force Raptor.

    I can add to the above that the biggest problem with targeting gangs is that they are not solely involved in crime. Within ethnic communities they have the role of de facto whanau for many, and the OMG’s do good things as well as bad. If you focus on the criminal activity, there are no problems; if you focus on gangs in general you are picking a fight not just with them but with the wider community within which they exist, and you are running the risk of being seen as racist and oppressive. But if there is a focus on the criminal activity, the gangs will lose their attraction. Kill the body and the head dies.

Hmmm! Have just noticed that Amazon (and no doubt many other overseas organisations) are no longer shipping online orders to NZ – this decision made immediately prior to the due date for implementation of GST collection this Sunday.
So the arsehole NZ pollies probably knew this would be the outcome, and will claim that it was not the NZ governments decision to imlement GST on goods, rather the o/seas companies have made a call.

    In my view, this has nothing to do with the ‘imposition of GST by the overseas supplier’, One needs to understand that products are still likely to be cheaper even with GST added, than what one would pay in NZ for equivalent item.
    This has all to do with the government using the wrong tools to dissuade NZ’ers from buying overseas, and furthermore reducing our choices of the products we would prefer to make and from where they originate.

      Yes, there are plenty of reasons why items in NZ shops cost more then the same item bought off the internet. The GST differential is only one of them. Government can’t do much about the others – staff costs, utilities, building maintenance, rent, rates, lack of economies of scale etc. That’s not a reason why they shouldn’t do anything about the factors they can control.

    Alberto the introduction of GST on online purchases was a knee jerk reaction by the governments (both the current and previous) to an outcry by retailers trying to lock out competition from the internet. If you recall, the argument was the imported goods have not had GST charged on them, were therefore cheaper, and this was damaging local sales and the govt need to impose GST on such purchases to create a level playing field. This argument was bolloc**s, and still is!
    
    The problem is low levels of competition and price gouging & excessive markups by retailers deterring consumers supporting local retailers. A self inflicted, own goal!

  Hosking can be a little insufferable at times, but I haven’t noticed any TDS from him. He’s been reporting on the impeachment hearings almost every morning and he outright said that the Dems have nothing. He has said the Dem candidates are rubbish, and that Bloomberg would only join if he thought no one else can defeat Trump. He has praised Trump’s economy, even praising some of Trump’s decisions in the China trade war.
  
  I think he’s been rather fair to Trump. Neither supportive or irrationally opposed. He thinks Trump does some silly things at times, which is only fair.
  
  Today, Trump’s administration have appealed a court decision that means his aides can testify, then he went on twitter and said he would love for them to testify. That is silly, and Hosking could have gone on a rant about it, but he didn’t. He barely even gave his opinion on it. He just reported it.
  
  Newstalk ZB’s US correspondent, however, tries to paint Trump in a bad light constantly, but Hosking is pretty fair on Trump from my perspective.

  You can’t really blame labour or national. The problem with measles in nz was that many people had their first vaccine and never were followed up for their second. The age groups first being targeted for vaccines in nz the past few months were way way way past the babies that were being vaccinated under this government

More signs of climate change not causing fires

* An RFS volunteer in Australia has been charged after he allegedly lit seven fires on the NSW South Coast, including one on Tuesday, which he returned to fight as part of his duties as a volunteer firefighter.

Blake William Banner, 19, was arrested on Tuesday evening in connection with seven fires in the Bega Valley area between October 17 and November 26. All are believed to have been deliberately lit.

“We have zero tolerance for this type of behaviour,” South Coast Police District crime manager, Detective Inspector Scott Nelson, said.

“[Deliberately lighting a bushfire] is a very serious offence. It’s a very serious risk to the community.”*
