  Much better interview but I enjoy the PTPM fucking it up every Tuesday with the Hosk so, although Robertson gave more succinct answers, the entertainment value wasn’t there.

  Everything that is wrong with the world will be Simon Bridges’ and Christopher Luxon’s fault, and JLR will ride into Botany as a White Knight. I would imagine they already have an exhaustive list of disaffected Air NZ employees, all of whom will also be character witnesses for JLR being even more saintly than Mother Teresa.

Winston’s court case –
While Winston initially resolved the super-payments issue within 24 hours of being notified of the problem, which was commendable. it would appear others involved in the issue also endeavoured to do the correct thing as required of them –

Boyle had consulted State Services Commissioner Peter Hughes, who in turn consulted Solicitor General Una Jagose, before Tolley and State Services Minister Paula Bennett were told.

Since the crux now of the court case seems to be whether Ministers should have been informed or not, the case will surely be credible only if it reveals what specific advice Solicitor General Una Jagose gave State Services Commissioner Peter Hughes, and the reasons for that advice, if indeed any was given.

  Yesterday’s cross examination was to the filling out of the document, not an acceptance that the amount was repaid – that probably gives a clue that the defence and therefore the Minister’s grasped the information as having political purchase. The leak is the problem not whether WP filled the form out properly or not, also the nonsense about which office he went to – he was hardly travelling to ensure he wasn’t recognized or that his name wouldn’t be.

        The ‘no surprises’ policy is in the Cabinet Manual so is not a ‘party policy’. The MSD chief sought advice from State Services Commissioner (both being sued) who sought advice from Solicitor General which must have advised that the responsible ministers had to be informed. Even if the Judgment shows that the SG’s advice was wrong, the culpability of the senior public servants would be reduced to near zero.

  One thing that puzzles me through all this is why did a resident of St Mary’s Bay, near the Harbour Bridge, go all the way to [deleted by Mod] to apply for NZ Superannuation. Very strange.
  Why did a man, who has a great support of wrinklies, wait until one day after his 65th birthday to apply for NZ Superannuation? Most would apply about four weeks before their 65th birthday.
  When Winston’s beancounter scanned through Winnie’s draft tax return why didn’t he notice that Winnie was getting much more NZ Super than were most of his other clients. For example; if the imputation credits only came to 8% of the NZ dividends a competent beancounter would say weird! Let’s check this out. Similarly if Winston’s super was more than the beancounter’s father’s super a warning bell should have sounded.
  I was disappointed that Justice Venning did not insist that Winston answer questions when being cross examined. His evasive responses to questions were not answers; they were evasive responses.
  Apparently Winston was tired as his international flight had been delayed the previous evening. When reading his brief of evidence he seemed to have the reading ability of a ten year old. It did not sound good.
  I took one for the team. I sat there from 10.10 a.m. through to 5.03 p.m.

    I think I can answer this as a relative was in a similar position last month. They applied for their Super online and then needed to make an appointment for an interview and to hand over copies of ID, etc. But their nearest WINZ office had no available appointments for two weeks and they were invited to attend a more distant WINZ office that had appointment times available in three days, so they traveled there.
    
    WINZ do not pay Super arrears, if you apply after your 65th birthday they only begin the payments from when you apply, they are not back-dated, so given Peters applied after he turned 65 he would probably have travelled to the moon if that was the only place that could offer him an almost immediate appointment.
    
    Incidentally, I accompanied my relative to the WINZ meeting and WINZ spent at least 10 minutes going through the “Rate card” explaining all the different Superannuation rates for being single/in a relationship, etc. Peters would have had the same thing explained to him, you can’t be in any doubt during the interview about the different criteria for single and defacto/married rates.

    Tauhei Notts, as you indicate, there are a couple of details that are intriguing.
    Like the original reportage said the super application form was not completed in front of Winston.
    So did he sign an uncompleted form – what was not complete, and wouldn’t he then more likely have checked any later correspondence, rather than not read it?
    
    And if that portion is so totally vague, how can you claim damages of someone without specifically naming them, or determine any motive for the release of information, without knowing even who released it.
    Could have been a receptionist, when he went to fix his account up – “Guess who I saw today, looking a little flustered”
    
    Such things can happened – like the politician that accused John Key of having the SIS surveil him, to know that he’d visited Dotcom a few times, but had forgotten the politician himself had with drink in hand at a Waitangi Day horse races told Auckland Herald gossip columnist of the visits.

        I am interested in this case as when I applied to receive the super, the member of staff I was meeting with was very explicit in all details, they asked did I live alone, did I pay rent, have a mortgage etc etc. Surely as a Member of Parliament we should expect Mr Peters would have the ability to fill out a government form correctly. Also every couple of years or it might be annually I am not 100% sure, but definitely biannually we receive a letter from MSD asking if our circumstances have changed in any way. It states what we receive presently and our relationship status. My question is this, does an MP not receive mail from government departments? If so I would imagine it is necessary for everyone to read them just like the rest of us do? I would have thought out of interest as he has on so many occasions stated he had such an interest in seniors he would have been at least interested in what was said. This whole episode is very puzzling.

  I would have thought that every single cent of Winston’s income should be able to be publicly discussed. He certainly seems to be well heeled for a career politician. John Key was independently wealthy, and all his income was accountable. Where does Winnie get his money from?

    That’s not relevant in this case anyway. Peter’s settled his/MSW’s oversight. This case is about the passage of information under a ‘no surprise’ policy, whether that was legal under the Privacy Act, about it’s leaking, and whether that was politically motivated.

      The case is more about Winston expressing himself. He is showing less and less of being “with it”. Winston now presents as a grumpy old grouch, a classic form of aging dementia.
      What next is he going to allege–someone soiled his seat in the House?
      
      With a random malfunctioning brain we can expect real peculiar stuff to emerge–that’s the norm and why many people are in care because physical behaviour breakdown is closely associated. It’s like a computer with a failing motherboard. The weirdest things can happen and that’s what reveals the fault.
      
      Like other elderly he is substituting personal confusion for reality. While I’m a little older too, I have lot to do with other elderly through ministry and are getting familiar with symptoms.

  In terms of Winston’s reputation having been sullied by the leak, I think his reputation will suffer more by the details about the parts of the forms he couldn’t fill out properly, the wrong date etc and that he didn’t follow up letters from MSD.

Why stop there? What about people getting the accommodation supplement and/or 20 hours free childcare? Should unvaxxed kids be allowed at kindy? The list goes on.

  Ian, clipping the ticket of MSD/WINZ should come with acceptance of expectations that welfare is provided with responsibilities and obligations being placed on the recipient. If, they can’t live up go their end of the deal, then they must accept the consequences.

      Yes, and look at the current situation in South Auckland. Two months of fluffing around playing catchup, and NZ (a supposedly developed country):
      1. Has more cases per capita than the US; and
      2. We have helped spread the measles outbreak to 2 undeveloped nations – with Samoa declaring an epidemic.

      Everyone in this country is a beneficiary of govt transfers in some way. Some transfers are more liquid than others, (ie more cash), but benefiting from govt transfers is actually unavoidable in this country.
      
      So why no then just be honest about it, and say that as a price of living in a first world nation, vaccination is mandatory for all (with appropriate medical exemptions)?

        Pretty rare though, for a superannuant to have children of an age to require vaccination. Does happen though. If the superannuant has survived to that age unvaccinated and without catching the disease, good on them.
        
        I don’t think I received a measles vaccine – possibly wasn’t available back then – but I did catch measles as a lad so presumably am still more or less immune to a second dose. Don’t think I had Rubella though.

    What about Steiner Schools. Do they not get some state funding. What are their schools values on vaccinating in 2019. From wikipedia, “Paul Offit wrote that Steiner believed vaccination “interferes with karmic development and the cycles of reincarnation”, and that adherence to this belief led to a 2008 pertussis outbreak in a Californian Waldorf school, causing its temporary closure.[9]” Personally I think it’s a slippery slope docking peoples benefits for vaccination. Would prefer to see them run a positive public health campaign blitz in the affected areas. Churches, Schools, Maraes, Plunket Nurses. And a vaccine register. And get on the phone to anyone not vaccinated. Anything punitive would have to apply to anyone who doesn’t vaccinate evenly.

      If their Dr can prove it, these children are exactly the reason a high ‘herd immunity’ is needed – to protect them. Any ‘no jab no pay’ would be very likely to exempt them.

      No. There are always medically valid exceptions. But medical validity does not include the ‘worried well’ and virtue-signalling idiots who want the benefits of herd immunity without accepting the (very small but not zero) risks of vaccination.

  The vaccination problem requires a considered response. I think anti vaxxers are a menace but I don’t agree with just picking on beneficiaries. The answer lies in reducing the numbers of anti vaxxers and stigmatising them. Get them down to a hard core of crazies. If we can get vaccination rates to 95 percent, it does not matter that much that there are a small number of hard core crazies.     Probably because they have the stats – simple as that. I read that the profile of the unvaccinated children showed that a good percentage of them came from families on welfare and lower incomes.
    It is the same grouping that sees its children admitted to hospital with poverty-induced illnesses.

      Are illnesses “induced” by poverty – or are the poor choice behaviors that mire people in poverty while breeding what they cannot afford to feed, house and clothe etc. “inducing” these illnesses? I see considerable evidence in everyday life for the latter. When I was a kid we had no heat pumps, heater on in one room only in winter, unheated bedrooms, etc. etc. so forth like most of my generation – but my parents stayed together, stopped at the 2 kids they could afford, and held down jobs.
      
      Do I sound unsympathetic to these families on welfare and lower incomes? I suppose I do. But I’ve been paying taxes and in full time work for lo these 47 years and I’ve long had a gutsful of “It’s not my fault, you’re guilty, gimme more of your earnings”. Sod off Swampy, I say.

  There are very different groups of people that do not vaccinate their kids. The yummy mummy Kandallah women anti-vaxxers are mostly beyond help. I have met a few. So the best thing to do is limit their influence and stigmatise them. There are probably lots of things that could be tried. Here are three:
  
  1. Require schools to publish a list of unvaccinated kids at the start of each school term. That will put the wind up the yummy mummies. Some of their friends might not be aware of their views on the subject.
  
  2. Get out into South Auckland and do intensive education road shows. Bouncy castles and free sausages for the kids, and lots of pacifc islander and Maori educators to reach out. Do it relentlessly over the summer at every shopping mall, etc. Have nurses on site with the vaccines.
  
  3. Use social media to target teenagers who are not, or under-immunised.
  
  None of that involves financial penalties or welfare recipient bashing. Experts might have other ideas, but I think mine are better than the knee jerk response we are seeing from National.

Biology does not play SJW favorites; the fact of the matter is that inbound so-called (economic) ignorant migrants who have never been vaccinated, plus NZ parents who do not vaccinate their kids, either because they are stupid, negligent, idiotic, ill-advised, virtue-signaling, uneducated, misled, lazy or a combo of the above, caused the epidemic.

  He is in for an amazing experience. The local National Party activists in the form of the selection delegates have given him an overwhelming vote of confidence. He needs to form a close team (his Campaign Committee) but would be spoilt for talent to do this. Jami would be but a minor irritant, those who think he can take the seat against are dreaming. He will be forming relationships among the wider party. His next big test will be the list ranking he is assigned next year, in his case it would be like a performance review.
  He is a risk to Simon’s leadership, but I am sure Simon would put the success of the whole party ahead of his personal ambitions. Like any decent National MP Simon has a respectable fallback position – continuing his legal career.
  Perhaps the National MP’s could make a concession to Chris – requiring him to breathe through his nose for one year only, instead of the usual three years as Kiwi Keith advised newbie MP’s to do.

It is not a place for the faint hearted and you can b3 made to look stupid very easily if you do not know or follow the rather arcane rules and procedures.       Luxton hasn’t been tested in the House yet. He’s good enough to gain electorate selection but what’s he like at an extempore 15 minute speech on housing or economic policy? He also needs to be able to gain the confidence of the rest of the National Caucus if he hopes for accelerated advancement.

        After a RWC win you would expect South Africa to be in party mood for a few weeks – maybe even the rest of the year, but it didn’t last past the week end.
        
        South Africa is subdued and gloomy at the moment thanks to the crap economy -the growth numbers (less than 1% when 5%+ is needed), the debt numbers, the unemployment numbers (29% official – about 40% real) and a Moody’s downgrade on Friday has been a huge reality check.
        
        Moody’s have given South Africa until February to improve things or they go to junk status.
        
        On top of that agriculture is down, food prices going up, etc etc.
        
        But we’ve got the vote and better LGBTQz rights since 30 years ago so everything is sweet!

      South Africa is stuffed and is on a trajectory to getting far worse. By every measure, South Africa is way worse than it was 30 years ago: currency down, crime up, unemployment up, education down, infrastructure down, corruption up, hospitals down, government services down, tax up.
      
      Those matter far less than being able to vote and I can prove that: less than 50% of South Africans bother to vote, so clearly voting is not of value to South Africans.

        But south African expats in our church talk about the chaos there and the crime. It’s happening in daytime, car jacking and mugging and robbery and murder even.
        There has been a break down of law and order. We don’t hear much about it here and if it happens it’s still blamed on apartheid.
        South Africa appears to be on a course to become a 3rd world country. Is there any African country that is well governed?

        Yup, in NZ you’d struggle to find, and actually meet, someone who has been robbed at gunpoint or know someone that has been murdered etc.
        
        In South Africa everyone can tell you stories of things that happened to them personally, or to family members/friends etc.
        
        In my case:
        * Two of the kids I played with as a child got done for murder in their later years. One was a cop.
        * Numerous friends of my family have been murdered on farms.
        * My mother and sister in law have been robbed at gunpoint.
        * Numerous robberies, muggings etc.
        * My cousin’s husband was abducted, beaten up, and left for dead in a ditch and had his car etc stolen.

        Botswana might be good relative to most of Africa but it is not really good. eg. Unemployment is around 20%.
        
        Botswana is indeed well run in many ways but that depends on three major factors:
        1) Low urbanisation. Rural people are largely living on subsistence agriculture supplemented by mining income which does not require much Western technology etc (except in the mines). Those people are also generally low-end consumers with low expectations.
        2) Their population is low and their income from mining is relatively high. Thus they can afford to live a frugal but comfortable lifestyle with little tax revenue from income tax etc.
        3) They have South Africa providing them with infrastructure (ports, roads, etc), electricity (70%) and skilled people. Thus, no expensive infrastructure to build, service etc.
        
        If/when South Africa falls down, so does Botswana.

  As an owner of a ‘lumbering ute’ of the sort that you describe, the word ‘ute’ is derived from ‘utility vehicle’. I will happily admit that part of the purchase was related to aesthetics, but my wife has a hobby of purchasing and restoring old furniture, and my ute comes in very handy when picking up a dining suite or sideboard. It’s also a very useful towing vehicle, ask my local wheelchair basketball club when I take their trailer through to nationals and regional competitions.
  Incidentally, a well maintained diesel ute is quite economical.

    Captain, what Stephie and the numpty who wrote the letter haven’t realised, is that it is not selfish suburban households buying utes.
    
    If Stephie and the fool who wote the letter did some research (a first I know), they would find:
    1. Most commercial/ute vehicles are owned by companies;
    2. 1. above is because companies use the company car as a means of remuneration their employees. The reason why this is now common, is that utes are classified as commercial and you only need a bit of dignity writing and all the nasty tax on the Fringe benefit is avoided. So, no FBT or GST on the Fringe benefit; and
    3. If the company is also paying for the fuel….
    
    Stephie & co….can sit on the side of our dusty, bumpy country road and eat my dust…as I pass by in my ute..!

      A surprising number around where I am are privately owned, though how many are also used as work vehicles I can’t tell. They don’t have signs/lettering etc.
      
      But you have nailed one of the major reasons with your point 2, the ease with which one can avoid FBT is a big seller in the commercial market.
      
      Been in quite a few, and driven a couple, and all I can say for a ‘normal” person who very rarely ever needs to transport large and heavy items, my station-wagon is a hugely superior road vehicle.

  As a contractor you can have a van or a ute.. Put your gear in it and do your job.. Both OK for tax reasons… But the ute drives better.. You can put the kids in it… Take it hunting or to the beach… So utes win.

Yesterday I found myself facing the stupidity of our health system.
I suffer from Bipolar Spectrum Disorder. My very rare version has 2 states, continuous sever suicidal depression or psychosis. on medication I experience depression with episodes of suicidal thoughts. I live my life with it so have strategies to cope.
I have just run out of my medication and are out of town and cant get to my doctor. I went to a walk in clinic to get at least a temporary prescription but I was refused treatment. Apparently the clinic was for accidents and emergencies. the result is someone with a headache can get treatment and medication but I cannot. My meds are to serous to prescribe and medical files cant be shared without my written consent. I was standing in front of them asking so consent? Everything was confirmed by calling my doctor and pharmacy but policy still got in the way.

Fuck you Health System.

It was particularly bad when the CoL wanted to steal my retirement funds through CGT. Most of my friends are incurable ‘woke’ lefties with state-funded jobs, with whom I can’t even discuss politics anymore. They see it as ‘right wing’ these days to simply believe in equal rights for everyone without constantly calculating who has it worst on the victim pyramid due to race, sexuality or gender.

  Once NIWA had thrown their (our) supercomputer at it to crunch the numbers, they told us that the 2000-2009 decade was 0.1 degree hotter than the 1990 to 1999 decade in NZ.
  
  A whole tenth of a degree!
  
  If Canterbury had had two less Nor’westers and one more snow storm that decade the result would have been cooling.

    Average temperatures are in some respects meaningless. Unless one can guarantee that the recording station has not been altered in anyway, and that the surrounding area is essentially exactly the same as when it was built, any number of factors could affect the temperature readings. 0.1°C is virtually unmeasurable using traditional thermometers. In think there are 8 stations in Antarctica, and supposedly these give the “average” temperature of that continent. Maybe The Greta could go and put a few more in….

      And pretty much everything has changed.
      
      Many long term measurements have been taken at airports because temperature is needed to calculate max take-off weight and pilots have wanted met data.
      
      70 years ago most airports where small strips in a huge grassy paddock. SFO was a dirt runway in a cow pasture. Now they are huge expanses of concrete and asphalt with airconditioned buildings cranking out heat. How are those ever going to be comparable?
      
      Even in agricultural paddocks, modern grasing methods tend to grow shorter grass with a warmer microclimate – can’t compare them.
      
      In many places stations have moved by many km.
      
      Basically, it is mumbo-jumbo and not science.

I posted a comment on GD @2044 last night 94/11/19), and, ass expected received the message thgat it was ‘Awaiting Moderation’.

I checked back at 0607 this morning (5/11/19) to find that it was still in that state!!

Checking at 0730 showed that it had been ‘approved’ and was now on ‘Public Display’.

Is a nearly ten hour wait for ‘Moderation’ a record, and should we perhaps start a competition to see who has had to wait the longest to date?

Interesting article. Also interesting that z say one of the things that cost of transport is part of the pricing. Hmmm, so the fuel that is transported an hour out of timaru from timaru port is cheaper than fuel that is transported a few minutes down the road in timaru. Weird.

* The Commerce Commission can find no fault with the pricing of fuel in Timaru as customers pay more at the pump than other nearby places as outlets match each other’s higher prices.

On Tuesday morning, the lowest priced fuel, according to Gaspy, being retailed in Timaru was $2.28 per litre at Caltex on King St while the highest was $2.37 at Z Caroline Bay. Nine of the 13 service stations in the area were retailing fuel at $2.32 per litre.

At the same time fuel at RDP Waimate, about 40 kilometres south of Timaru, was retailing at $2.14 while consumers were paying $2.09 when filling up 91 petrol further south at Allied Glenavy. In other parts of the South Island fuel was as low as $2.03 in Christchurch, $2.09 in Dunedin and Invercargill.*

ASB economists are suggesting the Reserve Bank will cut the official cash interest rate from 1 per cent next week and cut again in February, David Hargreaves at the interest-dot-co web site .

The Reserve Bank of Australia today held Australian interest rates at 0.75 per cent.

Meanwhile Michael Reddell reports on his blog, Croaking Cassandra, that there are, well just rumours, of a dust-up between the board of the Reserve Bank of NZ and the governor. Reddell’s description: “stories rumble around about the possibility”.

It’s been two years since Jacinda Ardern became New Zealand’s Prime Minister … To mark the anniversary, Ms Ardern was challenged to cram what she said were some of her key achievements into what was meant to be a two-minute Facebook video … but which ended up going 56 seconds over.

We’ve created 92,000 jobs. We’ve built more than 2,200 state houses. We’ve banned offshore speculators. We’ve planted 140 million trees. We’ve got better cancer care through radiation machines, Pharmac funding, and created essential cancer agency. We’ve delivered cheaper doctor’s visits for over 500,000 people. We’re taking mental health seriously with mental health advisers in GPs and doctors clinics across the country. We’ve increased minimum wage to $17.70. We’ve hired 2,000 more doctors and nurses. We’re building more classrooms in schools for 100,000 students. We’ve brought unemployment to the lowest rate in 11 years. We’ve got the highest increase in wages in a decade. We’ve helped one million Kiwis pay their bills with the winter energy payment. We’ve boosted incomes for 384,000 families through the families package. We’ve increased school funding so parents don’t have to pay school donations and NCEA fees. We’re breaking the cycle of family and sexual violence with massive boosts in funding. We’ve deployed 1,607 new police officers. We’ve made state highways safer. We’ve banned single-use plastic bags. We’ve started the clean-up job on our rivers and lakes through planting trees and fencing waterways. We’ve supported young people into training and apprenticeships. We’ve introduced a free lunches in schools programme. We’ve provided more funding for addiction treatment, beds and services. We’re paying teachers, nurses, and police officers more. We’ve resumed contributions to the super fund. We’ve set standards for rental homes. We’ve extended paid parental leave. We’ve ramped up the research, development, and tax incentives. We’re helping homeless individuals into homes through Housing First. We’ve banned military-style semi-automatic and assault rifles. We’ve introduced the Zero Carbon Bill. We’ve started fixing run-down hospitals. We’ve invested in public transport, extended nurses in schools to cover decile 4 and 5 secondary schools for almost 30,000 extra students. We’ve passed the Child Poverty Reduction Act and have lifted between 50,000 and 70,000 children out of poverty. We’ve provided the first funding increase in 10 years to early childhood education. We’ve banned smoking in cars with children. We began the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care and in Care of Faith-based Institutions. We’ve set up a Suicide Prevention Office and developed a suicide prevention strategy. We’ve created Mana Ake, putting mental health support in every primary and intermediate school in Christchurch and Kaikoura. We gave families an extra $3,000 a year for the first year of a child’s life. We’ve boosted funding for air ambulances. We lifted the cap on gender reassignment surgery. We’ve banned microbeads. We’ve boosted funding for KiwiRail. We’ve reduced the prison population for the first time in a decade. We established Te Arawhiti, the Office for Maori-Crown Relations, to make the Crown a better Treaty partner. We increased New Zealand’s refugee quota. We’re leading on the Christchurch Call to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online. And we’re making sure New Zealand history is taught in all schools and kura.

So I am not saying its an ice age ( yet) but it does seem to be awfully cold, awfully early, awfully everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere .. ( where Ice ages are reputed to get kicked off,) but that involves understanding real science not IPCC psuedobabble….
