    There is not the slightest evidence that any climate conditions are making the bush fires worse-there is however considerable evidence that lack of clearing practices and the control of undergrowth build up ARE having an effect. The current drought in OZ is not the worst or the longest – not matter how much you may wish that to be so.

      For this statement to be valid one would need to have undertaken a comprehensive review of every scientific study of climate change to determine its effects on Australia’s bush fires. Given your partisan fanaticism excuse me of being doubtful then you have the scientific training and expertise to offer an impartial and objective view let alone have any familiarity with the literature.

I saw Winston on social media saying that National is being investigated by the SFO over electoral financing irregularities.

Now this is either true or false. It is not an opinion. Perhaps DPF can shed some light.

The MSM would have been all over if it were true yet Ross is never held to account for proof.   I tried to find our whether any other political parties were being investigated by the Serious Fraud Office but nope, just National.
  
  The only reference to another political party I could find is when Labour’s David Parker called for an investigation into right wing operatives Carrick Graham, Cameron Slater and Cathy Odgers, who were conspiring to undermine the Serious Fraud Office.

    I think Labour and Winston are telling us this every day that Winston won’t form a Government with National and that Labour and him are joined at the hip. BoJo is still ahead in the British election campaign according to the Telegraph’s latest poll, but his lead has narrowed.

The newspaper says its Savanta Comres poll fell eight points over the last week.

The poll put the Conservatives on 41 per cent and Labour on 33 per cent.

The Liberal Democrats and the Brexit Party are steady: the LibDems at 12 per cent and the Brexit Party at 3 per cent.

Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg has temporarily allowed Donald Trump’s lawyers to block Democrat access to Trump’s financial records.

Judge Ginsburg, 86, regarded as a liberal icon, was reported in the New York Times in 2016 as saying when Trump was elected:

” … her husband, who died in 2010, would have said, ‘Now it’s time for us to move to New Zealand.’ ”

Fox News reports the Supreme Court Justice granted an emergency request from Trump’s lawyers to delay enforcement of subpoenas House Democrats issued to Deutsche Bank and Capital One for Trump’s bank records.

A lower court on Tuesday had ordered the banks to co-operate with Congress in handing over a treasure trove of Trump’s financial dealings in the midst of the House’s impeachment inquiry.

Justice Ginsburg has stayed the ruling until 5 pm on December 13 – next Friday.

  This is NOT a small matter. Supermarkets use stickered fruit so that both checkout operators and self-serve customers use the correct code for that variety. There are massive potential consequences to banning stickers:
  1. Overseas retailers may choose that the extra cost of placing stickers on fruit domestically (export country) will reduce competitiveness of NZ exports.
  
  2. The sticker codes allow varieties to be sold at different prices. If dearer variety is being charged as a cheaper one, the retailer may drop the dearer variety, lessening customer choice. Alternatively, pack them, which rather defeats purpose of ban. Another option is raising cost of cheaper varieties to minimise price difference (and potential loss).
  
  As NZ exports premium fruit, this has real potential impact on exports and NZ consumers

    Dead right, Straight Arrow. With varieties of fruit ripening at different times, and with rostered checkout staff changing, it will be difficult for supermarket employees to be accurate with fruit types.
    
    Probably all apple varieties will be lumped together in supermarkets, and the most expensive price will rule.
    
    Export-ready apples sometimes end up in supermarkets. This helps keep retail prices down, gives consumers high quality, and helps exporters manage stocks. Will this still be feasible if supermarkets can’t sell export-ready, labelled fruit?
    
    It’s not only fruit stickers Jacinderella and her Melon Greens are banning. Cotton-wool buds with plastic sticks will give way to buds with wooden sticks.
    
    Eugenie Sage, the Green Minister, made the joint announcement with Jacinderella. They also announced a “$40 million Provincial Growth Fund investment to turn plastic waste into useful material for businesses and consumers.”
    
    The press releases are hot, like a spendaholic’s credit card – $40 million here, $50 million there, hundreds of millions here and there … like political Santa Clauses high on LSD.

      And what about kiwifruit? Zespri protects the reputation of NZ grown fruit by stickering, especially in export markets.
      
      Why grow premium varieties of stonefruit such as plums or peaches, when retailer knows that many will go out the door as lower grade varieties, and will offer less to the grower?

Stuff are cementing their place as purveyors of fake news in this morning’s SST. The self-appointed fake ambassador for #metoo (Ali Mau) has been given a two page spread to hysterically shock us with tales of reported sexual assault and rape in the New Zealand fast food industry.

Why should we believe anything Ali says? She is way past her use-by date, and everything she claims now reeks of it. Where was/is Mau’s fight for the rights of the 12 women alleging sexual assault and rape in Prime Minister Jacinda Adern’s office? Ali Mau flushed her #metoo credibility down the toilet with her lack of action there – she revealed herself as just another biased partisan hack, on the Labour payroll and protecting their otherwise useless and vulnerable queen bee Jacinda. Stuff should accept she no longer has a mandate to speak on behalf of female sexual assault victims. Mau is part of the team helping to cover up the “inconvenient truth” of the sexual assaults under Jacinda’s nose, in her own office. Covering for a rapist makes Ali Mau ineligible to comment as #metoo spokesperson.

She’s as happy as a pig in shit. $10,000 a week, fuck all to really do, need deliver nothing as the media will still laud her magnificent achievements so I very much doubt ardern would rate it as a disastrous year. I saw a news article on One News this week (sorry can’t find it on their website) where they talked a lot about being “inclusive and brave” in local body politics, but once i filtered out the waffle there was nothing of substance to grasp onto. The only reason my antennae were raised was that the “right wing blogs” talk about compulsory iwi and maori representation, and that seemed to be where the article was leading, without actually saying it. be afraid, be very afraid.

Edit: it was DHBs, found the article. It about the proportion of maori population be represented, rather than election by ability or experience.

  Every atmospheric gas is in equilibrium with the same gas dissolved in water. The amount dissolved in water depends on the temperature and the partial pressure of the gas in the atmosphere. This is an osmotic process.
  
  This is a two way relationship.
  
  The percentage of oxygen in the atmosphere is 20.95% and in natural water 8.72%, 34.3% in sea water. The higher percentage of oxygen in sea water is due to the fact that plankton generates 50% to 80% of all oxygen, so it makes sense that the concentration will be highest closest to source.
  
  Again, the osmotic pressure and balancing process is two way, and a rapid change in either the atmosphere or in the sea, will result in changes in the other.
  
  If the percentage of oxygen in the sea was running out, as you state, and running out is generally defined as less than 50%, I would expect that the oxygen in the atmosphere would have also dropped. Since neither the percentage of oxygen in the atmosphere or the air pressure itself has dropped, I contend that the article you have shown is misleading. A 1 or 2% change is normal, considering fluctuations in temperature.
  
  The dissolved oxygen percentage is completely dependent on temperature. Temperature is driving gas in the sea. Temperature that is driven by solar cycles, sunspot cycles, all of which has been recorded and or discovered.
  
  Again, you like every other numpty, is trotting out the bullshit that it has never been hotter than it is now, and it is all caused by Man Made Climate Change. So again, explain to me, why the ice in the glacier on Mt Kilimanjaro, is only 11,500 years old?
  
  If that is too daunting, start with the basics. Why is it generally hotter during the day, than it night? Why is it hotter during summer than winter?
  
  If the sun stopped shining right now, how long will it take before you become a popsicle?
  
  Once you have done some real research, explain to me, why the ice in the glacier on Mt Kilimanjaro, is only 11,500 years old?

A drought that also poses a serious threat to wild life notably Elephants and Hippos.

  Vic Falls dried to a trickle every year when I was there in the mid 80s Stephie. Don’t fret about Zim agriculture, it was wiped out by Mugabe and his cronies long ago. Some of them are now trying to hire back whites to manage the farms they stole. A useful look into the future for the “decolonization” of New Zealand.

  Yes, some elephants are dying but they are in plague numbers in Zimbabwe. A 50% reduction in elephant numbers would be hugely beneficial to Zimbabwe as a whole.

  What makes it far worse this time is the corruption and incompetence.
  
  I suppose you think Climate Change also caused the Zim power plants, health system and water plants to fail.
  
  Zim only has power a few hours a day and no running water in the capital, Harare, have failed all because white people drive SUVs… or something like that.
  
  Their medical system has failed. Ok for the brass though: they fly to China for medical attention.

      I didn’t say no elephants are dying. I said that they are not threatened in Zimbabwe. This is well known, I bet even by the Guardian, but they choose to not mention that point.
      
      200 elephants: pah! They have a population of over 80,000 elephants and need to cull hundreds, if not thousands, each year. If 200 die due to “climate change” then that saves them having to drive around in trucks shooting them. All that saving of fossil fuel burning should please you no end.
      
      This is nature taking its course when there are too many elephants and the government is a basket case and can no longer manage their wildlife properly.

  In fact, they state the Zambezi river is the lowest it has been since 1995, indicating that in 1995 it was lower than it is today.
  
  Certainly the drought on the African continent 11,500 years ago was so bad the glaciers on Mt Kilimanjaro melted away to nothing. All before planes, trains and automobiles, and clearly a lot hotter than today. Please explain.

    Yup, according to the Zambesi River Authority:
    “The lowest flows recorded to date at Victoria Falls were during the 1995/96 season which had an annual mean flow of 390 cubic metres per second, whereas the Long Term Mean Annual flow at Victoria Falls is 1,100 cubic metres per second.”
    
    The 2018/19 mean flow was far higher than 1995.

    Nearly nine months ago now, DPF put out the call for moderators. He got “around a dozen great people” (see https://www.kiwiblog.co.nz/2019/03/kiwiblog_content_and_comments.html).
    
    Yet, here we are, on the weekends especially, and on Sunday mornings in particular, unable to properly engage with each other. It is hugely frustrating.
    
    As you have intimated, below, the moderators have lives, too. That is what one moderator – Batman – often tells us. Now, as it happens, Batman, for some unfathomable reason, attends a place called “church” each Sunday morning. Ergo, nothing happens on Kiwiblog.
    
    What does that tell us? To me, it says that there are now very few moderators helping DPF out. Even so, why are those moderators that do exist, not organised into some sort of roster, to make sure at least the period, say, from 0700–2300 hrs each day, seven days a week, is covered? It can’t be that hard to arrange, surely? Unless, of course, as I suspect is the case, there are very few moderators to go around. If so, that is certainly something DPF should address.
    
    To mikenmildagain: time to re-apply, perhaps? I reckon you would be a shoo-in now.

        Although I was (vaguely) aware that mikeandmildagain has been censured by DPF – I refer to the Comments policy every now and again – prior to 15 March, I was never aware of exactly what the problems were.
        
        Your comment has prompted me to click on a couple of those “clickable” strikes. The fifth strike indicates (to me) a problem between mma and DPF. Who knows what was really going on there.
        
        DPF says, at “Kiwiblog content and comments”, March 27, 2019 5:19PM—
        
        “The thing I like on Kiwiblog is that we have people who comment from across the political spectrum. Views get challenged. My views get challenged every day by commenters.”
        
        As we both know, sometimes people express themselves *too* freely. In DPF’s view, mikeandmildagain has, on occasion (prior to 15 March), been one of those people. That doesn’t make him a bad person.
        
        While it is not my place to defend mma – clearly, he is perfectly capable of doing that himself, should he wish to do so – I maintain my position: mma is good value.
        
        I have put up about 900 contributions over the last six years, and I have never been moderated (and certainly not censured). To have six strikes (for whatever reason) over about 35,000 comments, isn’t too bad – in my view.

Drunk seniors take a work vehicle laden with gear for a drunk drive at an outdoor function. Drunk seniors are caught by workmate + Venue worker in another vehicle who raced after them. One perp still in the vehicle and and later photographed returning to the scene with co offender.

6 Keystone cops turn up and after 45 mins pre charge warnings are supposedly given despite zero arrests made? There were 3 eye witnesses who provided statements including wife of one of the perps confirming husband was culprit and she got picked up by them in work vehicle. (Wife owns large fashion chain.)

Cops arrogant on arrival and as I suspect ‘locals’ from the rural area. They were pissed off they had to attend and made that point known.

  It is almost certain that we are not speaking Japanese today, *because* Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Had it not done so, the US would not have entered the war (both in the Pacific *and* in Europe) in December 1941, and, who knows, may never have done so, leaving Britain, Australia and New Zealand to our respective fates.
  
  Had that been the case, Japan would have been free to walk into New Zealand in 1942, and use this country as a launching pad to continue their attack on Australia (in preference to taking over Australia first, and then, more or less as an afterthought, New Zealand).
  
  And, had *that* happened, very few of us here today would ever have been born. For example, our boys in North Africa might never have been able, or allowed, to (eventually) return home. Other people would be here now, talking Japanese, not (almost all of) us.
  
  I have excerpted, below, comments from two articles that speculate on what might have transpired had Japan left Pearl Harbor and the US possessions in the Pacific alone, and just headed southward. Sure, the Philippines were certainly an issue, but even so, if the US entry into the war had been delayed, say, until sometime during 1943, it would still have been all over for New Zealand (as it was then, and is now).
  
  “Without the American entry into World War II, it’s possible Japan would have consolidated its position of supremacy in East Asia and that the war in Europe could have dragged on for far longer than it did. The U.S.’s role in the war forced Nazi Germany to commit a sizeable troop presence in Western Europe that it would have otherwise diverted to the withering invasion of the Soviet Union.   Seriously, though, the IJN had severe logistical problems and had great difficultly supplying its troops in isolated positions, especially once the Americans sorted out their defective tin fish problem and their submarines really started to take a heavy tool on Japanese transport ships.
  My father in law used to tell stories of how his infantry unit in New Guinea just about starved due to the lack of supplies. Malaria was a terrible problem as well.

        A couple of things about Japanese society.
        – Homogeneity in social conventions (can be intolerant of the unconventional, with a tendency to bully the weak)
        – Social conventions are enforced from the bottom up (like in the 1930s when grandpa would box the ears of the kid-next-door for stealing from his apple tree)
        – Strong sense of what it is to be an ideal member of Japanese society (New Zealanders have no idea of what a Kiwi should be, which means that NZ society is malleable)
        
        Be careful what you wish for. Japan has its own demons that it continues to battle with.

      I worked for a Japanese Company for eight years back in the 70’s the people were absolutely wonderful. Until two years ago due a death we exchanged yearly Christmas cards and with emails arriving in the latter years, regular emails with tsunami updates, news etc. They were all young during the war so equally as affected as we were.

  One thing I found living in Thailand was if you want to understand how the country ticks you need to have an understanding of the local language. Many expats go there and think they know what’s wrong with the place and think they have all the answers.
  They longer they stay the less they know.
  On the other hand knowing Thai in NZ is pretty much useless

    You are absolutely right. To understand Japan, you really need to learn the language. Japan is not like Germany or Holland, where the locals may speak English more correctly than you do.
    
    Despite 6 years of compulsory English at junior annd a high school, the average Japanese person is unable to function in even basic English.
    
    On the other hand, basic Japanese (with its Polynesian-type vowels) is very easy to learn. The grammar is logical. There are no gender for nouns. Basic Japanese is easier to learn than basic Spanish. (Advanced Japanese can be hidious, but the basic stuff is very easy to adopt.) Also, English contains all the sounds used in Japanese.
    
    Many English sounds do not exist in Japanese. For example, there is no “-ir” sound as in “first” or “bird” in Japanese. The closest Japanese sound is the hard “-ar” as “cart” or “heart”. That is why a Japanese learning English will pronounce the word “first” as “fast.”
    
    Stephieboy2 has a point. Learning Japanese will have far less application than learning Mandarin. The Chinese are on the rise, and Japan is mired in its ongoing 30-year-old recession.
    
    On the other hand, if you are an anime fan, and the call of the wild weeaboo rings out in your soul, then Japan has a lot to offer.

      Od, our long stay Japanese student was quite proficient in English but she did mention the Maori language had many similarities to Japanese. I still have a video of about eight of her fellow pupils doing a Japanese song and dance routine on her birthday on our deck. They were from a private school and her parents ran a 24/7 superette in Osaka, he also being a rugby fanatic. She was quite a tall girl probably because her grandmother was near 6ft in height, but I guess she would have had little need for English back home.

    TM: Apparently by the time the parents get them to hospital, they are often very seriously ill.
    Maybe along with sending out nurses to vaccinate, they should be sending vehicles out to pick up sick children and take them to hospital before they get to that stage.

  Not a single baby has died in NZ from our own epidemic, due to NZ having the advanced facilities critically ill children need.
  Why are we not trying to save some of these innocent little lives by flying them here??

    Those babies will have family members whose fares and accomodation would have to be paid for. If the Samoan government could afford to pay the costs, then, sure, but what about NZ children which might need ICU care in the meantime?
    Let us hope that the Samoan government will start to pay more attention to the health of its people than it has done in the past.
