I am puzzled why the police don’t do simultaneous major raids on these East Coast gangs. Clearly the gangs have lots of firearms. Bound to be a fruitful exercise. Show NZ they are serious.

  It’s pretty damned serious if the police feel that they have lost control in region – rule of law failed and given way to rule by gangs. They are really saying the East Coast is a nascent narco-state.
  
  Police have to focus on worst-first policing. They have to stop the worst offenders in their community as the priority rather than pissing around on the easy stuff – like traffic/hurty words etc.

      If she shows signs of back peddling and upsetting the plan, it will either be that, or someone will slip her something and be committed to a mental institution, as a vegetable. Or she may just burn out and collapse from long term self induced mental fatigue.
      
      Either way, the official story will be that she broke down, and blame lack of action on climate change, and/or blame all the “deniers”.
      
      She is obsessively hammering out mis-truths and bullshit, which has to be taxing her body and particularly her brain to the max.
      
      Without a healthy meat based diet, which includes the fats necessary for brain cell re-generation, it may explain her underdevelopment. Unless she is being pumped full of nutrients and drugs.
      
      Her brain cells will not be re-generating as fast as she is burning them up, so something will eventually give.

      It’s the drugs. She has severe behavioral problems. She is supposed to be seventeen now. I have never seen a modern seventeen year old girl look like that.
      The drugs make her look freakish and unusual, hence all the media attention. TV seems to accentuate visual strangeness. It is a social phenomena very popular in Victorian times but in the last few years is showing up more and more on social medias. Even Ardern sometimes display a visual strangeness that is captured in her face when she is in ,for her, uncomfortable or unplanned situations. She seems to forget herself.

In fact if I was a National supporter with a student at school I would endeavour to organise the confrontation.

And is Winston a “climate change denier” or does he accept there is varying degrees to the problem and various solutions, and to stigmatise and demonise meat-eaters is not one of them, in his opinion.
Also Peters said, this coalition is between NZ First and Labour and he hasn’t seen any agreements Labour have made with the Greens.
If Winston can reject material introduced into the school curriculum, by a Party which he doesn’t accept as part of his Government, are students allowed the same choice or autonomy Peters has?

    It may be deliberate on NZF’s part to challenge the Climate Change teaching resource, but I can assure you that National stands to lose a number of votes if they don’t pull these resources to shreds.
    
    It’s not just the anti-meat bias that is so wrong with these resources.
    
    There is a clear undertone that the mental wellbeing of their pupils is to be disrupted in these lessons and it is the duty of the teacher to deal to the angry and recalcitrant.

    Yes Robo, that is precisely what happened before the last election.
    Two or more times per week, his PR spinners sent out magnificent media releases carefully crafted and pitched to a variety of audiences. We got the rural themed ones and they were persuasive – sounded really good- here was someone who understood rural and valued primary production etc etc.
    These online releases were shared and shared some more (which is how we received them not being NZ1 admirers or supporters).
    It turned out to be all a cynical manipulation of generally voiceless and powerless people most of whom will not be sucked in by the Cult of Winston next time – surely?

  When I was listening to this story on the radio yesterday, I just assumed that there was a fairly standard interval between parole hearings. Is there any reason to assume that isn’t the case here and that it is part of some conspiracy?

  31k immigrants were granted residency in the year to May 2019. I would be surprised if the number has decreased since then. The Minister definitely appears to have stuffed up this ONE and has quite properly been called out on it.
  
  But – if there was (published) evidence of any others KB would be all over it.
  
  It was interesting that the previous Immigration minister has had very little to say about this matter. If every approval based on ministerial discretion was in a press release there would be regular hoohahs. “Why was this useless twerp given residency?” “Why was this other outstanding character declined?”
  
  There is a process for appealing deportation orders. Like all legal stuff it takes time. I believe he hasn’t a dogs show of overturning the deportation order but that’s just me ….

If you asked the people of Hawke’s Bay, right now, what would be their top 3 societal problems they would like fixed, it’s a safe bet that Gangs would figure in most people’s response.

In life, when confronted with a problem, the solution lies in 2 possible directions: what are “they” going to do about it, or what are “we” going to do about it?

The They refers to our elected leaders, people who are paid to achieve solutions for us, through legislation, through innovation and through leadership.

It doesn’t matter what political party they belong to, if they are in the job, then achieving solutions is their responsibility. They got themselves elected because they convinced a majority of voters that they would be the best provider of solutions.

But if they fail to provide, or even suggest solutions, then the responsibility devolves upon us; what are we going to do about it?

The answer, in this case, is almost certainly nothing. For society to solve the gang problem would require a concerted effort, of courage, conflict and sacrifice.

And, putting aside the post legislative imbalance of weaponry, most of us are too busy working to earn money to pay for our lives, for more cycle paths and for the fabulous salaries of the numerous politicians who represent us, let alone engage in a full scale anti gang endeavour.

The sad truth is, as far as our leaders are concerned, that the gang problem is well and truly in the too hard basket. And without leaders of courage and wisdom, that is where it will remain.

  Like the poor Gangs will always be with us. The only solution is termination. The fact is the Gumint and the Police are helpless. If take extreme measures they will be condemned if they do little or nothing they will be condemned.
  
  This is one case when I have some sympathy for both. They cant win. All they can do is try and contain the problem and hope to minimise civilian casualties.

  Hawkes Bay has a lot of rural folk, also armed, who may take matters into their own hands if it gets bad enough. I don’t condone that, nor want it, but it could happen if the Police and Govt appear too useless or cowardly. And there are 10x more members of the public than the gangs and police combined.

  1/ limit their ability to associate (criminalize association with other known members), including electronically
  2/criminalize known gang regalia, no matter whether it be patches, hand signs, hair cuts, motorbike type, jewelry, tattoos (mandatory laser removal, long prison sentences for new ones), specifically colored clothing, branded clothing or other.

    Basically we’ve got the problem that we have let these “cultural organizations” get away with far too much for far too long. Now they are multi-generational.
    
    The government researchers are quick to point out that we’ve had gangs for a long time. Just look at the “milk bar cowboys” in 1950s. FFS: Is there not a difference???
    
    They feel above the law and they are consulted with, and asked to please cooperate. THey are not treated as criminals but important community members.
    
    How many gang members are there? It seems hard getting reliable numbers. Some numbers say around 6000 or so which seems absurdly low.
    
    Approx 80% of prisoners are apparently gang members. That’s enough to completely overrrun the prisons if they care to.
    
    If approx 80% of prisoners are gang members then there are around 6000 gang members just in prison. For each gang member in prison there must be a good 5 or more outside prison, so a number of 30-40, 000 would seem closer to the money than 6,000.
    
    30,000 + all their scrotes can cause far more trouble than society can deal with.
    
    The cops can really do nothing with their hands tied behind their backs. They are stuck depending on gang cooperation which, inherently, results in some quid-pro-quo.

  What do you mean by “screening arrivals”? Ask them if they have any flu-like symptoms (most of those would be garden-variety coughs and colds, btw) , ask whether they are from Wuhan, …? What would your criteria for action be, and what form would that action take (quarantine, put them on a plane back with other unaffected people)?
  I’m not being dismissive of your concerns by the way, I’m just pointing out that it’s not a simple as it sounds.
  
  Currently they are talking about a few hundred cases in a country of a billion+, and it’s not clear how readily it spreads across humans (airbourne, physical contact, etc), so it may be a little premature to hit the panic button just yet. But, yes, worth being concerned about.

      meh – It’s a fair question, and I’m just being pragmatic – What do you mean by “screening”? Questions – oral or written? Cameras to detect people with raised body temperature? Physical examinations? Testing samples?
      
      What’s your threshold for action on “possibles”? What action do you take on possibles – quarantine, send them back on a plane with unaffected people (should you warn those people?).
      
      It’s easy to ask for “screening” without worrying about what it means.
      
      To be honest, really you need the screening to occur at the port of departure, not arrival.

        Which is just another way of asking what I am asking. What would be practical and doable AND reasonably effective – on one hand, people will lie on questionnaires, on the other hand it’s not practical to give everyone a full physical examination.
        And it doesn’t deal with the question of what to do with the “possibles” (most of whom probably have the symptoms due to more garden-variety illnesses). Isolation? I’d be furious if an airline was knowingly carrying a high-risk passenger back home without informing me as a fellow passenger.

    China under-reports, as well as medical staff who have treated paitents have been infected.

      There seems some question as to thermal imaging’s effectiveness (apparently, no expert myself)
      
      Prof Baker said the exponential rise of cases in China would suggest it would spill over into places where Chinese people travelled.
      
      However, he said thermal screening was ineffective, as shown in research, and not recommended since it could not pin down the potential type of illness a traveller had.
      
      Current measures at the border are risk-based screening assessments that increase chances of detecting passengers who arrive ill or may have been in contact with infected people, he said.

    Some epidemics don’t allow time for thinking it through, reasoning it out, working parties, on going consultative committees etc. This one suggests that our borders should be closed forthwith until we have certainty. The virulence is already demonstrated and where that has been encountered in the past like in 1918 there were massive deaths.
    
    Every few centuries some real nasty appears and as the populations have increased massively and become more urbanised the potential for risk has increased likewise. That’s demonstrated with the Aussie fires–there’s now 25m people largely concentrated in urban surroundings enclosed by fire prone trees. Different hazard but proximity driven.

    As a regular visitor to Japan and less frequent to China, all international boarder arrival gates are setup with infrared cameras and mostly but not always manned screening stations if you show any signs of elevated temperature. It has been relaxed somewhat in Narita lately but this latest outbreak will restore the manned stations. I have been stopped in Beijing around the time of the SAARS scare because I did in fact have a cold at the time. The questions were very much about where I had travelled, where I intend to go, where I was staying and so on. Fortunately my cold was just garden variety so no need for further tests and was released within a few minutes.

      NZ wasn’t useless with measles. The people who didn’t have their kids vaccinated and in some cases still refuse, were the problem.
      My granddaughters parents were advised what vaccines they should have and ensured they got them. Some people don’t, for whatever reason and put their kids at risk.
      From what I understand it’s all provided for by the public health system at taxpayer expense.

  I’m glad im not the only one interested in this. I have no idea why the wheels of justice turn so slowly here.
  
  It is injust to all parties involved that cases like this drag out for as long as this. I know that mistakes were made by the police and that dotcom has money / lawyers but the pace of scheduling, hearing and ruling on things seems manifestly injust. If he is not to be deported it is cruel to unfair to him, if he is to be deported it is unfair that he gets to spend 7? years extra in NZ.
  
  Labour, NZF and Greens all met privately with DotCom many times when the Nats were in power. All expressed support for him. I an concerned that the delays in decision making at this stage are so that the minister, who has the final say, can do so shortly after the next election. Therefore avoiding any voter ramifications that may occur.
  
  If that happens I believe this case will have dragged through 3 NZ governements and Obama, who started the whole thing, is very long gone.
  
  p.s. I would like him to be deported.

    KDC has proved himself a very able software developer and could be an asset here if we would let him.
    He did get caught up in NZ politics but may himself have been taken advantage of by the fanatics involved.
    I believe KDC is more an asset to the world being free than locked away because of crusading USA media companies. His achievements to date suggest more to come.

Last year I read in an UK PAPER and article by a Lady high up in the Min of Health.

She said that it wasn’t GW that was going to get us but a pandemic of Spanish Flu proportions. She said that with fast and efficient world wide travel it would spread ;like wild fire.

With the PRC not liking to advertise any failings in their Utopia you can bet your bottom YUAN that this bug has been around longer than they have let on.

We are into the PRC major travel season when tens of millions move around and with the hygene outside the main cities not very good look out.

    “SARS is a zoonosis caused by SARS-CoV, which first emerged in China in 2002 before spreading to 29 countries/regions in 2003 through a travel-related global outbreak with 8,098 cases with a case fatality rate of 9.6%. Nosocomial transmission of SARS-CoV was common while the primary reservoir was bats and the intermediary source was civet cats in the wet markets in Guangdong ( Hui and Zumla, 2019 ). MERS is a novel lethal zoonotic disease of humans endemic to the Middle East, caused by MERS-CoV. Humans are thought to acquire MERS-CoV infection though contact with camels or camel products with a case fatality rate close to 35% while nosocomial transmission is also a hallmark ( Azhar et al., 2019 ). The recent outbreak of clusters of viral pneumonia due to a 2019-nCoV in the Wuhan market poses significant threats to international health and may be related to sale of wild animal as game food at the seafood market.
    
    As of 10 Jan 2020, 41 patients have been diagnosed to have infection by the 2019-nCoV animals. The onset of illness of the 41 cases ranges from 8 December 2019 to 2 January 2020. Symptoms include fever (>90% cases), malaise, dry cough (80%), shortness of breath (20%) and respiratory distress (15%). The vital signs were stable in most of the cases while leucopenia and lymphopenia were common. Among the 41 cases, six patients have been discharged, seven patients are in critical care and one died, while the remaining patients are in stable condition. The fatal case involved a 61 year-old man with an abdominal tumour and cirrhosis who was admitted to a hospital due to respiratory failure and severe pneumonia. The diagnoses included severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, septic shock and multi-organ failure. The 2016-nCoV infection in Wuhan appears clinically milder than SARS or MERS overall in terms of severity, case fatality rate and transmissibility. There is currently no clear evidence of human to human transmission. At present, 739 close contacts including 419 healthcare workers are being quarantined and monitored for any development of symptoms ( WHO, 2020b; Center for Health Protection and HKSAR, 2020 ). No new cases have been detected in Wuhan since 3 January 2020. However the first case outside China has been reported today, 13th January 2020 in a Chinese tourist visiting Thailand, and is being treated in hospital.
    
    However, many questions about the new coronavirus remain. While it appears to be transmitted to humans via animals, the specific animals and other reservoirs need to be identified, the transmission route, the incubation period and characteristics of the susceptible population and survival rates. At present, there is however very limited clinical information of the 2019-nCoV infection and data are missing in regard to the age range, animal source of the virus, incubation period, epidemic curve, viral kinetics, transmission route, pathogenesis, autopsy findings and any treatment response to antivirals among the severe cases. Once there is any clue to the source of animals being responsible for this outbreak, global public health authorities should examine the trading route and source of movement of wild and domestic animals from other parts to Wuhan and consider appropriate trading restrictions or other control measures to limit. The rapid identification and containment of a novel coronavirus virus in a short period of time is a re-assuring and a commendable achievement by China’s public health authorities and reflects the increasing global capacity to detect, identify, define and contain new outbreaks. The latest analysis show that the Wuhan CoV cluster with the SARS CoV.10 (Novel coronavirus – China (01): (HU) WHO, phylogenetic tree Archive Number: 20200112.6885385 ).
    
    This outbreak brings back memories of the novel coronavirus outbreak in China, the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in China in 2003, caused by a novel SARS-CoV-coronavirus ( World Health Organization, 2019a ). SARS-CoV rapidly spread from southern China in 2003 and infected more than 3000 people, killing 774 by 2004, and then disappeared – never to be seen again.”

  There is no Australian, NZ or US house price. Prices are highly variable from area to area. A semi-rural house in Texas or Georgia etc can cost peanuts relative to a major city.
  
  The issue with NZ is that we have such a tiny population that we have not spread out much and we also pay through our noses due to import costs.
  
  Compare Auckland house prices with NYC, Sydney etc and tell us how you get on.

    I’ll paraphrase and say it back to make sure I understand properly.
    
    CO2 keeps things warm by trapping warm air – like your duvet.
    
    If you put the duvet on your bed in summer you get too hot, so best take it off and put it away.
    
    If you put your duvet on in winter you get too cold, so best take it off and put it away.

I just made the mistake of looking at the midday news on TV1. It is a new year and being on holiday, I thought I would try something different.
I had to turn it off after there was a breathtaking item ……………..after the fires in Australia, and after the rain…………… NEW PLANTS SPROUT!!!!
Oh the wonder .. oh the miracle of it all (oh the bleeding obvious to anyone with half a brain)
Then quickly following by an even more idiotic item stating that because of climate change NZ forest will burn like Aus eucalyptus sooner rather than later.
It would have been more appropriate as a part of “not the nine o’clock news”. It is either a piss take or journo’s have regressed to kindy kids logic.

      You are correct, but probably not how you think.
      
      In a dry environment like Australia, especially with eucalyptus trees, you do not need arsonists to start fires. Just about anything will start a fire.
      
      However arsonists make it way worse. Many arsonists are themselves triggered by fire. They see one, or see it on the news etc and they start another.
      
      The impact of arsonists is not fires per se because Oz is going to burn anyway.
      
      However arsonist cause there to be many fires simultaneously which overloads firefighting resource meaning that the impact is way worse.

        stephie: Climate change has NEVER started a fire.
        
        You might argue that climate change could create more fuel (trees growing better) or make the fuel burn hotter because it is drier, but people explain a mechanism whereby climate change STARTS (ie. ignites) a fire as you claim.
        
        Even the most outlandish IPCC reports do not claim that the temperatures would get so hot that it achieves the flash point of wood (around 300 degrees C).

Great to see he is improving. Much respect for his attitude and his fight he has had and has in front of him.

* To everybody who has been supporting me I would like to say a big Thank You. We are grateful for the kind donations received through the Givealittle page and I am enjoying reading the awesome messages and comments that have come, they’ve really helped me.

A few days ago I moved out of ICU and into the National Burns Centre. This is a big step in my road to recovery. So far I have had 14 visits to theatre – sometimes the surgeons are grafting parts of my body and other times they are changing my dressings and checking out the progress of the work they have done.

Now that my fingers are no longer bandaged I have been able to use my iPad to catch up with my friends.

Thank you so much for your kindness – it means a lot to me.

      Greta has the wrong idea. A replacement has to be found for energy needs. So the sequence should be finding alternatives. Stopping using fossil fuels (a concept I actually believe in) should first be preceded by alternatives. Otherwise you are condemning millions, if not billions of people, to death by starvation, and extreme cold.
      
      I notice Greta is keen to use the products and byproducts of fossil fuel or product created using fossil fuel, so she does practice what she preaches, so does not believe in it.
      
      On the other hand if Greta knows a source of clean energy that could replace fossil fuels, why is she keeping quiet about it. The correct way to phase out something inefficient and unproductive is through competition with something new. But no,Greta has no alternative.

New Zealand Jewish Council president Stephen Goodman says the lack of representation is “disappointing but not necessarily totally surprising”.

“I would imagine it’s a case of priorities in Government. But, given it’s the 75th anniversary of Auschwitz being liberated, it would have been an appropriate time to go,” he said.

“Australia takes a different attitude on such matters and it would be nice if these things were given a higher priority here.”*

An expert says it’s too soon to be screening passengers to New Zealand for the coronavirus.

Nearly 300 cases have been confirmed in China and Australia is now screening passengers at the border.

  There are many things that we take steps to reduce even though the risk is low.
  
  Wear a seatbelt? I have not had a crash in well over 500,000 km. What a waste.
  Lock the house? Waste. Most likely a crim didn’t come try break in last night.
  Insurance? Tens of thousands of dollar – not needed.
  
  The cost of screening need not be high. We probably have all the toys already and they just need to be plugged in.
  
  The “oops I was wrong” cost of putting up a screening that never stops a single case is very low.
