  To put the threat of the cornovirus into perspective, let’s say we lost complete control of it and it was spreading at will throughout the country here in New Zealand and there was nothing we could do about it. It had just overwhelmed our health system. At the current reported mortality rate of around 2.5-3% that would mean that some where between 125,000 to 150,000 New Zealanders would die from it over the next 6 months or so. Those who would develop a more serious illness requiring medical input would number around 1 million, and those becoming very ill and developing pneumonia requiring hospital treatment could number up to 750,000. Obviously our health system could not cope with that.
  
  None of that is going to happen of course because we will be putting people into isolation and quarantine, doing contact traces etc., all good stuff that is proven to work and that limits the spread of pandemics long before they get out of control. This approach might be undermined somewhat however as this virus can be spread by asymptomatic individuals. This might help explain why more people have had this infection than the numbers that acquired the more deadly SARS virus 20 years ago – although no one knows how many people in China got SARS back then.
  
  Nevertheless if the situation did become more serious here, people would panic, they would stop going to work, shopping, kids going to school, going out, eating at restaurants, etc so the economic disruption to us all would be severe as it is in Hubei and increasingly in other parts of China where they are trying to shut the barn door after a couple of horses have already bolted.
  
  So while there is no need to panic, we do need to take appropriate measures now to prevent a worse case scenario from happening, which is clearly what the Singaporeans, Russians, Koreans and others are doing.
  
  If you were told to go home and self-quarantine for two weeks, who is going to pay for that? Do you take annual leave, sick leave or leave without pay? What happens if that happens to you more than once?

  What a bloody whingefest!
  
  The point is not to give these Aussies a wonderful 5 star holiday, but rather to get them out in a way that does not compromise too many other people.
  
  This is not an easy thing to achieve and people will have to put up with sub-palatial surroundings. From what I have seen of various Wuhan videos, the apartments there are nothing to shout about and the Christmas Islands facilities will be a step up.
  
  Tropical Islands in summer – let the nippers run wild. Just write it off as a camping trip.
  
  The Poms are flying their mob into an RAF base and quarantining them there: nobody in, nobody out. It might be on mainland Blighty, but the conditions won’t be much better.

    Kim Hill had an excellent interview with a British virologist this morning.
    In simple layman’s terms he explained the hows and whys of the spread of the virus, and what is being done to control it, given that it is ‘new’. The quarantine is part of the effort to learn. It is known that the incubation period is 11 days, so a quarantine period of 14 days is ‘safe’.
    He explained why some people get slightly ill, and others get REALLY sick – it’s your immune system at work.
    He explained why masks are useless – and why you can get infected from the virus getting in your eye.
    Well worth a listen if you can find it on National Radio.

      The main thing about the 14 day quarantine is that it keeps these people isolated and gives them more time to craft the proper reaction.
      
      If, in 10 days, they find that actually they need to extend the quarantine period to 2 months, or need to change some treatment, then they have the people in hand.

Labour are already hypocrites campaigning against the flag change when it was one of their policies, so if they try to change the Anthem now they will be even worse.   As Cmm indicates, the irony in this is that the Muslim Call to Prayer says, ”Come to prayer. Come to salvation. Allah is most great. There is no God but Allah”
  So the hope that the second verse would emphasise inclusiveness is eliminated by the most central principle of Islam itself, it does not say “Allah defend New Zealand”.
  
  In fact, how can a follower of Islam sing the New Zealand National Anthem without offending their own belief, as someone like Brian Tamaki would find it difficult if the wording were changed to actually be “Allah defend New Zealand”.
  
  I see it already proposed “Men” should change to “Those” (or “We”) but you can’t really remove “God” (twice) because the whole verse, as a request to ‘God, would become meaningless.

        I’m pointing out that Maori version of our National Anthem could be deemed offensive
        as it specifically refers to people by skin colour, and then only…white skin (kiri ma), red skin (kiri whero)
        and gives emphasis to two groups of people … Maori and Pakeha.
        
        I reckon Brown citizens (non Maori) and black citizens of NZ could feel excluded.

      When Joyce said back in 2017 that there would be an $11.7 Billion hole he was so wrong. Between the spend up, slush funds, borrowing, and SOE borrowing off the books, I would be surprised if it was less than $40+ Billion. And when the next crash comes, and interest rates snap back up, and future things this figure will rise to $60 – 70 Billion or more over the next decade.

This report was also on prime news Friday. Basically it highlights everything from a Muslim point of view and claims without evidence that there is an increase in islamophobia. It also says hijabs are a barrier to employment.

The gist of it is that we NZers have to change to suit the incoming Muslims.

Here’s my response. Why should we change? Shouldn’t people who come here be expected to assimilate to our ways, not us to there’s?
In Muslims countries is there any example where they change their ways to suit migrants from the west?

Why does our western liberal elites feel that we should change everything to suit Muslims? Isn’t there a sound reason to feel wary of Muslims given the thousands of Muslim terrorist attacks all around the world? Isn’t the hijab a source of oppression that women in Iran are trying to throw off? Why should modern feminists support it?

Finally can’t we feel proud of our country and defend our ways and not throw everything over because of the actions of one evil Australian?

  Christchurch isn’t like New York where there are Polish neighborurhoods, black neighbourhoods etc. We all live intermingled.
  
  Sure, there is an Afghani Cultural Centre a block away from here and there are churches etc, but we really do not live in “communities” and thankfully so.

  Observation indicates that when the Muslim population of a country exceeds 2%, they start throwing their weight around. I believe we are close to reaching that percentage, and this is but one of the consequences. There is going to be a lot lot more coming if other countries experiences are to be believed, and as more Maori gang members in the jails are (deluberately) prosletised, expect violence to become more commonplace.

      What for example if happening in the UK? A good place to start I would have thought as we in NZ consistently and invariably follow what happens there.

      In the UK all of the significant Islamic councils, masjids, clerics and federations ALL want Islamic law to be cemented in as a feature of UK law. Some go further in calling for the sharia to replace UK law.
      
      Anyone who thinks we in NZ will buck this trend; that we will be somehow immune from this call emerging in our society will unfortunately have the evidence of history against them.
      
      I’d go further too. I think the chances that Imams in NZ mosques currently tell their congregations that NZ law is superior to Islamic law and should be unsullied or untarnished by the sharia is NONE. NIL. ZERO.
      
      Only the utterly deluded would believe anything other than Imams in NZ will be pushing the superiority of sharia at every opportunity to anyone who will listen.

  While his actions were extreme, you cannot write off Tarrant as ‘evil’ just to make yourself feel better about the situation. He knew exactly what he was doing and the reasons for doing it. As unpleasant as these events were, he has shown us what our future will resemble – escalating inter-group conflict, due to not maintaining a mostly homogeneous (and so cohesive) society.     Assimilation is an alternative policy to multiculturism, and was long aspired to by the United States, with emphasis on flags and pledges of allegiance and the “American way”.
    
    China practises assimilation in a much more brutal way, as in Tibet and now Sinkiang, to the extent even of forced intermarriage. China also did enforced this in Outer Mongolia, where ethnic Mongolians are now a minority.
    
    Some of us would prefer an American-style assimilation policy for New Zealand rather than multiculturism, which weakens society’s bonds. Robert D. Putnam spelled this out in his well known book, “Bowling Alone”.

    She says that the change in Indonesia is being pushed onto them by the Saudis who build the mosques and install the mullah they want who is generally much more conservative than the locals.

Was last night’s T20 at Sky Stadium the first ever T20 international to be played over two months? Sadly, the Black Caps are so down on confidence that they keep finding new ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

And what a trooper Ross Taylor is. He’ll play his 100th T20 international at Bay Oval tomorrow, then his 100th test at the Basin Reserve from 21st February making him the first player in the history of cricket to play 100 matches in all three formats of the game. Not only is he one of New Zealand’s finest cricketers, but he is one of the nicest blokes you could want to meet. I’ll certainly be there on the first day of the test to cheer him on.

If Bridges is innocent then the details need to be out in the public domain as it will benefit National if the whole set up is revealed. I heard Sean Plunket on Radio Magic [Deleted – Mod]. Simon Bridges was being interviewed at the time. If there was a suppression order in place or there were concerns over defamation this would not have been said on air.

What concerns me is that this has not been repeated on TV or on Stuff or the Herald as it put Bridges and National in a good light.

    If suppression orders have been made by the court I can find no record of them. I have doubts about whether any interim order, which it must be, can be made until the defendant has appeared in court. Orders can be made either by a Judge or Registrar, but the Criminal Procedure Act is clear that it is on first appearance.

        Simon Bridges brought this up in the house and the PM pretended to have no knowledge.

        The “provincial divide” is getting bigger. Chirstchurch is somewhere between the “real provinces” and “real urban” (Auckland/Wellington). Our property is completely surrounded by huge trees, both native and exotics.
This time of year, the bird-life is amazing. We attract everything from sparrows, fantails, thrush, blackbirds, chaffinch, tui, kereru, even flights of parakeets. The other day, we heard that Dutch naturist on ZB saying in this hot weather its really nice to put out some whole grain bread, soaked in water, because their usual source of water (gutterings) are so dry. Anyway, we got a loaf of Vogels Mixed Grain from NW the other day, put a few slices under the tap, and threw it out on the lawn. It was amazing to see, there was literally hundreds of birds descend from the trees. Really was beautiful to watch. This morning, my partner gets his fave tee shirt out to put on, which I’d only just washed and brought in off the line, and there’s this yuge bird-poop down the back. He storms into the kitchen, grabs the Vogels out of the fridge, and says, “F~~k that Dutch prick and his advice, the birds can die of dehydration!” 🙁

    We tend to get a lot of noise from the birds as our cat watches them from a semi-concealed position. Has had a lot of sparrows lately, probably from in one of our hedges. He’s a bit intimidated by the blackbirds and even more so by the Tuis that are pretty common.
    
    Very rare to see a Kereru though we have, there’s a reasonable number in reserves nearby but they don’t seem to travel that far. We do get a lot of finches though, chaffinch, goldfinch, greenfinch, and others I’m not so sure about, and of course the ubiquitous wax eyes and fan tails.
    
    The cat does his best but hasn’t had much impact on the number of birds !

  On CI channel it turns out the birds win.
  Temporarily.
  The wife can’t stand the husband’s bitching and moaning anymore, encourages him to take out a huge life insurance, kills him with poison and puts his body through the mincer and feeds it to the birds.
  
  Then it all turns to custard.
  The insurance company turns down her claim because there’s a one month stand down period.
  The birds all die from poison.
  Her distant cousin in law is suspicious, especially when she takes out a life insurance on her new husband.
  Useless Plods finally cotton on and the game is up.

  Maggie, for the past 3 or so years, we have been laying crushed nuts and torn-up breads on our patio table for a family of kereru that like to come down from the bush for a feast.
  
  They’re not exactly tame but, as we remind the youngsters in our family, if you’re quiet and don’t make any sudden movements, they’ll sometimes let you stroke their feathers.

How ironic that a poor depressed Kiwi farmer is dragged to court, publicly humiliated and even jailed for neglecting his cows.
Yet we blithely send off hundreds or even thousands of cows on a long, stressful voyage to God knows what fate.
Out of sight out of mind, no doubt.

FYI, the Chinese govt is offering NZD$6M in contestable research funding to partner with local Chinese researchers to help combat identification, containment, treatment, medical management and eradication of 2019-nCOV. As I understand it that $ amount is for NZ alone, for up to 20 projects.

Got the notification yesterday. What really interests me about this is: why? Why have 213 (likely more) people died, but only in China? Why is the death rate overseas = 0? (With over 100 cases now).

Are China admitting their medical infrastructure is sub-par?

  China didn’t have an idea of what was happening untill people started dying. By then the disease had already spread. The rest of the world got warned about what might be coming and was/is able to try to quarantine potential carriers.
  
  I hope that efforts to minimize the spread of noravirus [? coronavirus – mod] overseas is successful but it’s early days yet.

  What is one example of actions that a government has taken any where globally that have materially reduced emissions. Let’s say by 20 percent from baselines?

    There’s plenty that a determined Government could do to reduce emissions, both within its own borders and outside them. Fund research into GE solutions. Lift restrictions on the construction of nuclear power stations. Introduce an emissions trading scheme with the supply of credits low enough to make the price bite. and so encourage consumers towards low-carbon alternatives. Help poorer countries with the cost of cleaning up their worst polluting factories, power stations; etc.
    
    Yes, no country has seriously attempted these, let alone done so successfully. So what? How does this invalidate stephie’s case that there is a problem that needs addressing? Is your logic truly that the lack of effective action to address a problem proves that there isn’t a problem? How does that follow?

      I for one am sick to death of climate change bullshit. Who says that a bit of extra warmth is bad? Find me a tree that doesn’t want a little more CO2.
      
      What is of greater concern is pollution both atmospheric and physical in the sea and on land. I travel a fair bit and without doubt, New Zealand is the cleanest country that I have seen regarding rubbish but it is getting worse.
      
      Most of the coal burning tech is now relatively clean although not so much in NZ but I would happily see a few more degrees of heat but a lot less rubbish being dumped in landfills and the sea.

  The 1974 75 fires were quite different. They were literally in the middle of nowhere in the vast western plains of NSW and Victoria. They were grass and scrub fires. These are quite different to eucalyptus fires which release incredible energy.

Albatross cops may soon be taking to the skies over the subantarctic Isles to scan remote parts of the Pacific Ocean for illegal fishing boats.
In a trial using technology shared by New Zealand and France, 169 albatrosses were fitted with radar detection tags in November 2018 and released to the south of the Indian Ocean.
In a separate experiment New Zealand Fisheries fitted 20 radar detection tags on to antipodean albatrosses in January 2019, allowing the department to track their movements between New Zealand’s sub-antarctic islands and the west coast of South America.

“Albatross are taonga [precious] species and this research will help understand more about their movements and how we can protect them.”
The New Zealand birds are part of a larger global effort to fight the illegal fishing trade.

Airborne albatross can spot a vessel from 30km away and will consistently come in for a closer look once they do. “They’re like drones, only intelligent,” said Weimerskirch.
When a bird zeros in on a boat its logger detects the radar signal and sends the coordinates back to the scientists.

So far scientists passing information to the Department of Defence have had few favourable results.
Although at Ron Mark’s instructions, personal have had little success fitting 50mm cannon to albatrosses. “Don’t worry – the rest of Government is having problems with delivery too”, Ron Mark remarked.

  That is why at least 14 days quarantine is required. That gives 14 days to learn more and improve the picture.
  
  If, at the end of the 14 days there are still too many questions, then they need to extend the quarantine by a further however many days.
  
  That might not be nice for the people in quarantine – many of them who are already whinging – but they should rather focus on their good fortune and being thankful that flight staff put themselves at risk (and subjected themselves to quarantine) to fetch them.

Prosecutors are backpeddling now. There’s a chance they actually might get charged themselves.

Also given the FISA Warrants against Carter Page have now been proven to be illegally issued, this may affect charges and Court cases held against others.
It’s now been confirmed of course, that the Obama Administration was illegally spying on Trump and others.

I got talking to two Canadians in a cafe yesterday. They had arrived that day and confidently told me that we had an amazing PM. I asked them why they thought that and they said all the Canadian media praises her to the high heavens. I asked them what they thought of Trudeau and they said they thought he was terrible. So I explained that he and Jacinda are cut from the same cloth and that Jacinda is only liked by a minority of NZers. They thanked me and said “Oh goodness, you just can’t believe everything you read” My good work for the day.

(3) The Pacific is not our responsibility. If they have insufficient medical systems to function, then shut down travel too/from there.
(4) NZ comes first.

    China notified WHO on Dec 31st that they had a mysterious illness based around a wet Market in Wuhan….. it has taken another month before the extent of the infection and death rate has become a bit clearer
    
    As healthy folks are dying (including doctors treating ill people) and the number of folks dying/day is increasing in Wuhan, then I think we might need another month to judge how lethal the virus is inside and outside China.
