    If the person is a NZ citizen he/she is entitled to a NZ passport (there are some exceptions). If the NZ citizen is overseas he/she is entitled to a NZ passport or at least a NZ issued emergency travel document. If a foreign country wants to deport a NZ citizen with expired/lost/destroyed passport then diplomatic convention would require that an emergency travel document be issued at the request of the deporting nation. Failure to do this would invite retaliatory action such as tighter visa rules, etc.

  I was pleased to see Peta Credlin (Sky News Aust) give her a good serve.
  Australia has a population of 25m plus and a military to be proud of and us with a population almost 5m, many of which are not NZ citizens and a run down military and our unelected PM chooses to lecture Australian’s with an elected PM about how they should treat our citizens, what a joke.
  Come home princess, sack Peters from your cabinet, call an early election and take your chances. Do the honourable thing!

  According to Government figures obtained by Stuff, at least a third of the Australian residents deported to New Zealand have not stepped foot here for more than 10 years.
  
  What they don’t say is
  (a) two thirds have been in Australia for less than 10 years, and
  (b) how many of those 501’s were fleeing the law in NZ in the first place

  I’ll give her this, she learned a lesson from last time when she learned you can’t always speak out both sides of your mouth and expect to get away with it. But one simply cannot escape her obvious insincerity. There’s no way on god’s green earth she’s a long term prospect, she obviously lacks the necessary radar, intelligence and substance. I have an aching conscience. A few days ago, I satirically praised the recent announcement by a well-known Green MP. Golriz Ghahraman.

Based on previous examples of her making assertions which then appeared to be open to question, and annoyed by her use of her own announcement to appear to promote herself as a flag-bearer for all ‘disabled’ people, I felt, cynically, perhaps that she was making political capital from her condition. I also felt tht the timing of her announcement was suspicious, given it is an election year.

I am too cynical and hard-bitten by politics, perhaps. Perhaps I should learn to be more compassionate.

I would like to apologise to Ms Gharahman for expressing my doubts in such a passive-aggressive manner. I will not do it again.

I have known people with MS, I do sympathise.

My discussion point is: do we sometimes allow our political feelings to justify being nasty? I know I did on this occasion.

  Yes, that’s very common in politics, and it’s easy to get dragged down into nasty reactions – in part probably because it is seen as normal. It is even promoted as an essential part of politics (which I disagree with).

  Lee C – here’s my take on your discussion point:
  I grew up in an era when citizens, generally speaking, respected their political leaders – those they had voted for at the ballot box.
  They might have disagreed on policies, but there was still some trust that the electeds would do the correct thing (for the times) to provide intelligent governance and inclusive leadership.
  Those days are gone.
  I trust no politician.
  Far too many of them are ideological activists out to push a separatist type agenda,
  If a politician, elected or appointed, becomes sick or is personally affected by a tragedy, I’m not going to disrespect them for that.
  I just hope that the policies and personal agendas they have so assiduously pursued, often at the expense of other citizens, give them the help they need.

I’m not sure about the case for the third runway at Heathrow. However the reason it was ruled unlawful is concerning. It was ruled unlawful because the airport expansion would make it more difficult for the UK to meet its Paris Accord commitments to reduce emissions.

We should not have courts deciding who are the climate change winners and losers. Markets do that.

On a much smaller scale this is exactly what is happening in New Zealand. We have an emissions trading scheme. It was designed to price emissions and then let emitters decide the most efficient way to achieve reductions. Instead we have ended up with a price on carbon AND a myriad of regulations and meddling also intended to reduce emissions in the most haphazard and bizarre ways.

Meanwhile back in the real world China is planning on building 200 major new airports in the next 15 years. No that is not a typo. 200.

  I haven’t commented on GG’s MS diagnosis to date. I didn’t feel any sympathy for her, and when reading the other comments here I wondered whether I was being unkind.
  
  Your comment about looking at how one treats others before deciding how to treat them is the first that has resonated with me.
  
  I also look at the numerous examples of nasty people getting their beans in prison. No one here really has sympathy for them despite getting shanked in prison not being something we’d want to wish on someone.
  
  What of all the other MS sufferers that we don’t know? If we went around feeling bad for all of them we’d be a mental wreck in no time. So, why is she so special?
  
  The fact is, that she isn’t special. Also, her self anointing herself as the “voice” for the “community” strikes me as self aggrandisement, and a cynical move in election year. I have more respect for Jacinda Adern not announcing she was pregnant until after the election.

    I don’t trust Ghahraman either, and I oppose her style of politics completely. I do feel sympathy for her however, and have expressed that.
    
    Perhaps those were the values I was raised with, but not liking or agreeing with a person’s politics is not to me an excuse to not spare them a thought when something untoward happens. Compare that with the unrestrained glee from some on the Left when the death of Baroness Thatcher was announced.

      Something I’ve noticed in the last 10 years or so is this: usually there is a wide separation between one point and another. For example the separation between “spare a thought” and “outright glee”.
      
      What I’ve noticed is that if you’re not at the “spare a thought end”, your labelled automatically at the “outright glee” end.
      
      I didn’t spare much of a thought for GG. I however did not feel glee. I guess I just don’t care. So somewhere in the middle of the range.

In the Auckland corona virus case the person or a family member called Healthline seeking advice. As reported in the news last night the advice was to go seek medical advice.
Shouldn’t the advice have been to firstly self-isolate and then get the specialist corona virus isolation and diagnosis teams to come to you.
Naturally I assume the government has organized such teams, or is that naive?

    I hope someone in the Nat Party is drawing up a list of all these working groups and reporting what they did, what it cost and what were the outcomes, if any.
    How many people on them and how many involved in their administration.
    A comprehensive cost benefit analysis.
    That the new CoL had to rely on establishing all these groups to help them form some basis of policy is a clear indication of how absolutely unprepared and unfit to govern they were/are.
    The Nat Party needs to highlight this during the election campaign.
    Ordinary people really don’t like seeing money wasted on tribes of officials and hangers on being paid big money to do what the actual political parties are paid to do.

      I don’t know exactly. It sounds as though the single case so far reported met with the appropriate response. From the health specialists speaking on the radio, it sounds as though the health system has been quietly gearing up for when this gets worse (which it will).
      
      From what I can tell, NZ is approaching this in a very similar way to countries like Aus, USA, and Canada (say). I sincerely doubt that a National government would be doing anything drastically different.

  I doubt the health system has the resources to send a specialist team out to everybody who rings in with the flu.
  Chances are this is going to get a whole lot worse and even confining people in hospital is likely to really stretch the system, let alone test them in situ.

  It seems that it would be very easy for the airlines to contact everyone on that flight. The airlines would have all the contact details.

      So in a plane full of people, long distance the loos get a bit of a thrashing.
      
      If someone didn’t bother to wash their hands, (common occurence), then everyone who pushed a button (first thing one does when stepping and pulling up the breeks, then you got it. Add the tap handles and the door handles. Dirty places.

  Once in a while Kim Hill does do a good interview, and this morning was such a case: when she just asks good questions and then shuts up and lets the expert answer. Very different from her hot-headed political ‘interviews’ where she constantly interrupts.

  He explains how the person got into NZ, but was already wearing a mask, that the family acted correctly and the agencies took 3 different samples until they actually found the virus (nasopharynx and throat didn’t show it, but it did show in the sputum they had to get with a procedure because the person too unwell to provide it by coughing).
  
  Quammen seems pretty sure that family and health staff did all the right things to contain the virus.
  
  He also gives lots of info. re ‘spillover’ diseases and why bats seem to be esp. prone to infecting us.

Noticed the NZs Media always compliant in turning a blind eye to the short comings of the Peters selected wee girl Ardern who for the last couple of years has masqueraded as NZs PM.
NZs media are virtually salivating with the fake news that Ardern virtually punched the elected Australian PM Morrison on the deporting of NZs back to NZ for criminal actitivies. Even though all the criminals had to do in the years they were in Australia was to get an Australian Passport.
Helen Clark, Arderns’puppet set the agenda against NZs when she sold out to the Australians in 2001. Yes the deal was for future NZs arriving in Australia was a special VISA with many many strings .One of them no benefits of any type.
At the time NZ officials were told . Australia was a Sovereign Nation and like NZ had the right to say who was allowed into their Country.
Ardern it was rumoured turned the colour of “bad shit” when Morrison told her in exchange for keeping NZ criminals in Australia ,the special arrangement for NZs Law Abiding Citizens to access Australia would be no more. That would mean get in the queue with the other countries who apply for residence.
Phew!Thankfully that is just a rumour . Could be factual if our Media and Ardern continue their virtual signalling in big noting and bullying against the Australians like they were the enemy ,and had no right to decide who lives in Sovereign Nation Australia.
Sadly Ardern is desperate for votes in this country she might get a few extra votes. The downsize could be what an awful price NZs could end up paying if their access to Australia was ended all because a clueless wee girl called Ardern was said to be acting like the mouse that roared with her said to be verbal assaults on Australian PM Morrison.

  This assumes they were Australian residents.
  NZ citizens are not Australian residents while in Australia. NZ citizens can apply for Australian residency but are unlikely to get it because they do not need residency to work in Australia. Hence they cannot apply for Australian citizenship and hence cannot apply for an Australian passport.
  There could be some Australian residents who meet criteria for citizenship but not sought citizenship that have been deported. The NZ situation would be similar but the threshold for deportation would be very high if the resident had met criteria (10 years residency) for citizenship.

      It was not quite so simple. Up until 2001 New Zealand had paid Australia billions of dollars to partly compensate Australia for paying benefits to New Zealanders in Australia. But the bill got too expensive and hence the current situation.

I see the universities have their hands out already.

I’m so old i can remember when Universities were for New Zealand students, and that they promised international students would just be topping up existing capacity.

Now go to any introductory course and try and find the native kiwis in the sea of international students who probably shouldnt have passed the language test.

I saw an intro course a few years ago, every tutorial saw the poor tutor and the native english speakers desperately trying to guide the international students through basic comprehension.

Maybe its time the Unis got their wings clipped and returned their “industry” to serving the needs of citizens?

Southland Fish and Game councillor Ken Cochrane is standing his ground against fellow councillors who want to oust him because, at a non-council meeting of whitebaiters, he made remarks about DOC “chick scientists.”

Other councillors demanded Cochrane resign by 4pm yesterday, but, the Southland Times, reports, Cochrane has refused.

Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage described the comments as sexist, while the Department of Conservation DOC Director General Lou Sanson said they were appalling.

The Otago Daily Times reports Cochrane confirmed his intention to remain but declined to comment on his decision and said, “we’ve been beaten around the park so we really don’t have any comment at this stage.”

What Cochrane said at the whitebaiters’ meeting, discussing a DOC document on whitebaiting:

“I sat there one day and I thought, what I am listening to is a whole bunch of chick scientists, and if you really looked at the view that they were pitching, [it] was everybody in New Zealand should not shave their armpits, they should wear dreadlocks, and when they go whitebaiting they should do it in jandals only.

“And after they catch one patty for tea they should sit down, hold hands and sing Kumbaya. That was the feeling I got.”

The economy worldwide is already slowing with the supply chains especially to and from China becoming chocked. If it continues for the next 6 months we will be facing recession and again the Government/President will be blamed.

  Trump actually has done a heck of a lot, and very early on. See his press conference the other day. Chuck Schumer was complaining that Trump won’t give him the $8.5 billion he thinks is needed to combat the virus. Who knows where he came up with that figure, but, has the House (whose job it is to initiate all bills related to revenue) put in any bills for funding related to the virus? Have Nancy Pelosi and other Dems made speeches in regard to the virus? No. They were too busy focusing on impeachment, and so were the media. In fact, impeachment was tying up business in the Senate, which had to stop everything else (including anything related to combating the virus) to focus on the Dems impeachment process.
  
  The Dems, as has been said before, will never let an emergency or a disaster go to waste. Everything is used as political capital by them. They are even lying and saying that funding to the CDC has been cut (it has not).

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said during the joint press conference that she had heard countless cases of individuals “who, on any common sense test, identify as Australians”.

She added, “Just a few weeks ago I met a women who moved to Australia not much older than 1 year old. She told me that she had no connection to our country, but she had three children in Australia.
“She was in a crisis centre, having returned to a country she did not feel was her own. [1]

Does “having returned”, rather than “having been returned”, suggest this particular woman has just made a personal mis-judgement in where to live, or indeed is a deportee that fits the context of what is actually being discussed, and so, if sent back to New Zealand, what crime did she commit in Australia?

Of course, were Ardern straight forward in all her dealings and apparent judgements, one would not need to ask – which is why I am asking.

  This is a crazy way to think about nationality. If that woman left New Zealand as an infant and she has three kids she went to Australia before 2001 and could have applied and probably have been granted Australian citizenship.
  
  Citizenship must mean something. Indeed there are international conventions that define it, to which New Zealand is a party. And none of the definitions in those conventions are based on “feels”.

As we are all fully aware, NZ is a soft touch for citizenship that leaves the door open for easy entry to Australia . . . this being exploited by PIs, and those of ME origin. If they get the arse card from Aus they should be sent to their countries of origin, not NZ.

  I don’t know when tighter rules will happen but they are inevitable. There is no way that the current arrangements will last another decade. One scenario for tightening is time limiting the stay of New Zealanders to say two years and reducing even further their entitlements. For example requiring them to have health insurance.
  
  One thing I am positive about is that antagonising the Australian government will make such a scenario happen sooner.

    The thing is that in the entire public health system there are about 130 ICU beds. I understand that about 20 percent of people who catch this thing require intensive care. So an outbreak of 650 cases which does not seem impossible,would overrun the health system.

      Its closer to 150 beds in ICU nationwide and they don’t need them all at once. Also 20% severe or critical is the data, and not all need ICU. They can also use non-ICU wards for the severe cases.
      
      The issue is when normal flu strikes over the top of 2019-nCOV. We don’t have enough to cope with both if they run away on us, the DHBs have been loud and clear on that.

  The patient had reportedly felt unwell on the flight so was wearing a mask.
  Bloomfield told RNZ the family’s person knew exactly what to do and rang Healthline.
  
  Were they still in Airport Arrivals when the “family’s person” rang Healthline?
  
  Either health officials need to act earlier or reporting of such events need to explain more clearly what happened, for anyone to have any great confidence in either.

Over the last 10 years they have lost 360,000 people to the flu. Likewise every US$ of additional borrowing even at the lowest of interest rates now costs NZ$1.60 or more if the slide continues. Thus it may come to pass that even @US$40 it may cost the same as when it was @US$70 when the stronger NZ$ was in the mid 70 cent range. Ouch. More of those unintended consequences..

After the elections we will see that all oil and gas imports and sales are fair to any consumers. Importers or producers will be required to trade their rights to sell to Citizens Care Councils in exchange for a seat on their local Commissariats. What a despicable bunch they are, appeal to the basest instinct to grab the votes then “dump” the policy in the grab for power.

Just a quick refresher for those that bought the bullshit last time … Immigration cut to 10,000 and all maori seats to be abolished ….. Bottom line!

I would like to see Comrade Ardern try a similar stunt with President Trump as she did on ScMo. He would not be so diplomatic as ScMo. I wonder what nickname he would choose for her.
