        SB: Drawing an equivance between the “fallen” on 15 March last year and ANZACs is disturbing on many levels:
        
        1) The ANZACs knew what they were facing and did it out of duty to give their lives if necessary.. Yes, adventure too, but primarily duty. Those victims in Christchurch did not go to the mosque with any hint of risk.
        
        2) The fallen suggests this was war? Was it. Do we really want this fanned into a Jihadi thing that is fanned and inflamed? The Al Noor Mosque already has problems in that department.
        
        3) As MW says, it is grossly insensitive to the traditions of the victims. We commemorate ANZAC because, in our culture, commemoration is something we do.

      What it signifies Thought Criminal, is that Ardern is in desperate election mode. The needs and wants of the affected Muslim community, and the safety of the Christchurch community as a whole with the ongoing Covid-19 virus are irrelevant if this commemoration gets her a bump in the polls. As I said when polling came out after the 15 March 2019 event in this forum that this would be the high-point in polling for Labour I have been proved right. To my mind in this health crisis Ardern is putting her bid for power over that of the welfare of the country that she purports to represent and govern. If she was truly compassionate then she would have firstly respected the wishes of the Muslim community, and secondly failing that, cancelled any ceremony in light of the ongoing health crisis. This just shows Ardern in her true colours of wanting the power irrespective of the adverse mental and physical effects that it may impose on individuals and groups. She has no shame.

So another cruise ship steams into Wellington harbour this morning, the “Ruby Princess” – sister of the coronavirus infected “Grand Princess” and “Diamond Princess”. Will its two to three thousand passengers be checked before they land and wander all over the city? Yeah right. Apparently the parent company is suspending all cruises from 17 March because of coronavirus. How blessed we are therefore to receive this visit (sarc). Meanwhile Ardern and her coronavirus committee are reportedly meeting this morning to consider further restrictions. Perhaps they could take a look out the window?

      There are several types of lay up.
      
      Cold Lay up. This is where the ship is dead and only connected to shore power and a small watch crew is on board.
      
      Ordinary lay up where there is a small crew and maintenances is done, ship supplied own power and there are ‘hotel facilities” for the staff on board.
      
      Both these are in port and the second could be at an anchorage.
      
      Ship could be sent out to sea with a small crew and slow steaming or drifting in good weather.

  The Swine flu epidemic in the US in 2009. Obama waited until 1,200 were dead and 20,000 were ill before declaring a national emergency. When he finally did it, he was met with praise and adoration from the Left and their lapdog MSM. That epidemic ended up killing 18,000 with 300,000 hospitalized.
  There were little to no event cancellations due to Swine flu.

What a bunch of hypocrites the Government is they cancel all big outings at other venues and leave the Muslim terrorist memorial alone to give Jacinda Ardern a platform and hope of retaining power at the next Election. If this was National making the same decision the media would be in attack mode and playing it for they could, but no it is there fairy Princess and there will be no criticism of her decisions as they need Labour to save them from extinction.

  I was thinking that as I watched the mighty Hurricanes run all over the feeble Chiefs in front of a packed house in Hamilton.
  Today the Blues should steam roll some no hopers from somewhere at Eden Park.
  Meanwhile Womad is still going ahead.
  
  I think the reason Polyfest was cancelled was because if any participants became infected and returned to the Islands there would be huge problems due to their various healthcare systems not being able to cope.
  I’m guessing here, but if/when that happens NZ will get the blame and China will send in the cavalry.

Italy had 2,500 new cases in last 24 hours and 250 new deaths, it has now hit 300 people per million.
Norway has a really great health system.
Nearly 1,000 infected, just 1 death with 172 per mill infected
Australia 200 with 43 new cases yesterday, only 7.8.
NZ of course is 5 cases, none have recovered as yet.
I guess all a country can do is try and control the spread of this at a rate the health system can cope.
No respirator and you could be gone very quickly.
Italy is now choosing who lives and dies, awful situation, but run down health system.
This is going to show real leadership qualities, big fail will more than likely equate to higher death rate as in Italy.

    Maggy If I had a choice of going into a hospital it certainly wouldn’t be Italy, France or Spain. On the other hand, Oslo I wouldn’t hesistate.
    Italy has not had stable government in my lifetime, how can you say it has a fantastic health system, which has just got worse and worse with the great influx of illegals.
    Not third world, but certainly not geared up to accomodate 2,500 new cases everyday, I wouldn’t think anyone besides China could handle this. No one else in the world can go out and build a 1,000 bed hospital in a week.
    I guess this just says to the world how important it is to bring this on at a slower speed, it will come to most, it is timing that will be everything, particularly if you are my age and fighting for a respirator 20 other patients are wanting.

  I doubt that even in a worst case scenario. Simple population density would be to our advantage.
  Italy has 60 million people in a country about 20% larger in NZ, and many more living in apartment-style housing. This should make it easier to control here. Don’t get me wrong, no reason for us to be too cavalier, but we do have some things going for us.

      Viruses don’t like sunlight
      ‘Overnight in Asia, we hosted a call with professor John Nicholls a clinical professor in pathology at the University of Hong Kong and expert on coronaviruses. He was a key member of the research team at the University of Hong Kong which isolated and characterized the novel SARS coronavirus in 2003. He’s been studying coronaviruses for 25 years (full bio here). The recording of the call can be found on our website HERE. Below are my notes transcribing the call’
      
      ‘When do you think this thing will peak?
      Three things the virus does not like 1) sunlight 2) temperature and 3) humidity. To make you guys really worried. A coronavirus can survive on a stainless steel surface for 36 hours. It hangs around for quite a bit.
      
      Sunlight will cut the virus ability to grow in half so the half-life will be 2.5 minutes and in the dark it’s about 13m to 20m. Sunlight is really good at killing viruses. That’s why I believe that Australia and the southern hemisphere will not see any great infections rates because they have lots of sunlight and they are in the middle of summer. And Wuhan and Beijing is still cold which is why there’s high infection rates.
      
      In regards to temperature, the virus can remain intact at 4 degrees or 10 degrees for a longer period of time. But at 30 degrees then you get inactivation. And High humidity the virus doesn’t like it either. That’s why I think Sars stopped around May and June in 2003 – that’s when there’s more sunlight and more humidity. The environment is a crucial factor. The environment will be unfavourable for growth around May. The evidence is to look at the common cold – it’s always during winter. So the natural environment will not be favourable in Asia in about May.’

  Italy was too lax with initial case detection and isolation and is paying the price. There is good reason to think others in Europe may successfully flatten the case rate curve velocity by paying attention to Italy’s failings. Someone describes earlier epidemics as being a U with at one peak children and the other the elderly, in this case, it is reported as only one peak – the elderly.

  We need to get back to our Christian society where we valued life. The unborn baby is a child made in the image of God. It is not something to be disposed of because it’s inconvenient.

Southland businessman Colin Hitchen withdrew his [Provincial Growth Fund] application but says officials tried to get him to rush it through, filled out the form for him and told him to ask for more money because they’d pumped too much into Northland.
“They said they’d come to Southland because they’d overspent in Northland and they were down here to even the score.”
Shane Jones is the minister in charge of the fund and is one of the ministers who is signing off on the spending, he’s also set to stand for New Zealand First in Northland. [1]

Shane Jones denied it, calling to the allegations ridiculous.
Winston Peters, on Magic Talk talkback radio, told Peter Williams there is no truth in it.
So was TV1’s Jessica Much McKay just making stuff up and lying?

I would have thought it easy enough for the Opposition to confirm Colin Hitchen’s comments or ask a Question in Parliament regarding what is otherwise corrupt pork barrel politics.

Astounding statistics on poverty and homelessness among US school kids, mentioned in passing in a New York Times article on coronavirus:
“In Los Angeles, about 80 percent of students qualify for free or reduced [i.e. subsidised] lunches, and just under 20,000 are homeless at some point during the school year.”
“New York City … has the country’s largest school district, with 1.1 million students — including about 114,000 who are homeless”.
The US has never been held up as an example of how to take care of the poorest in society, but even so, I was shocked at these estimates.

    Id argue that rather test than not test even if she doesn’t meet the criteria. The criteria for being infected seems to be a moving feast. Since the virus can remain alive for at least 5 days on plastic surfaces it seems that it could spread even if she has not been in contact with a person or traveled. Think of a toilet door in a doctor’s waiting room visited by a contaminated person…..

  I read that too, but I couldn’t decide what to make of it. There are plenty of times when KB takes people that rush to the media (because they are in this awful predicament) with a grain of salt. She may have a valid point, but she might just be a bit high strung (as it were). Hard to know.

  She was sick with flu like symptoms, felt recovered and went back to school, then a relapse.
  
  She is in the wrong.
  
  With or without a test she should have self quarantined for at least 48 hours after being completely well before going back to school.
  
  Any school trustees out there? Surely there is a standard flu policy re stand down periods.

    Its a bit fluid in schools…. If people have diarrhea or temperatures, they are supposed to stay at home until better, but with the shortage of relievers a lot of staff do come to school sicker than they should. And with kids in low decile schools, they just get sent to school, no matter what the state of their health. The problem is many may have the virus and show no sympots.       Reading about NZ 6th patient today, he travelled from US and felt sick three days later. His US friends were close contacts.
      
      NZ is saying no one on the flight is a close contact, even if sat next to him, because he didn’t have symptoms. I’d really like some robust evidence re COVID19 not being transmitted if asymptomatic.

  I hope common sense prevails and some of the Prime Minister’s colleagues and advisors have a quiet word with her today.
  
  The other thing is that rain is forecast for Christchurch tomorrow so folk will be under cover in closer quarters than an event in Hagley Park on a sunny day.
  
  I’m fairly sure that Christchurch Council has the power to close the venue without seeking the agreement of central government. Of course the Christchurch mayor won’t do that. Just like she won’t fix the f***ed up streets like Victoria Street because they are awaiting cycleway integration planning. Or some other bullshit reason.

  In the meantime the Blackcaps have to participate in the most meaningless ODI series since the format was invented to bring a bit of pizazz into the game.

  As far as I can ascertain the only people the SFO have charged are those four Nat donors. One no longer a Nat.
  NZF was investigated in the past, but not charged. Peters stood down from the cabinet for the duration of the investigation.
  This time Peters has refused to step down and Ardern won’t sack him. I expect he’s told her that if she did he’d leave the coalition and there’d be an early election.
  That would be the end of NZF six months earlier than is likely anyway.
  Apart from that snap elections aren’t usually kind to the parties in power and Ardern is anything but adventurous.

      I have absolutely no doubt they were all members of the National Party at the the time.
      One of them was a Nat MP, the bagman. Another, Zheng Hengjia, had been schooled to become an Nat MP. He also donated some money to Labour.
      He is a business partner of Zhang Yikun, the Communist businessman who can’t speak English, yet was made an NZ citizen.

It’s over triggering our survival flight or fight mode. Of course the situation is serious but we have many serious situations in the world. Our sense of proportion and ability to think straight has been swamped by the media.

Unsurprisingly no mention in the MSM …. but did anyone hear Sean Plunket on radio yesterday reveal the reason why NZ didn’t have an official presence at the recent Holocaust memorial events?

The ones in which Winston Peters accused Gerry Brownlee of “politicising” the issue (when Brownlee labelled NZ’s non-appearance a “disgraceful decision”)?

Surprise, surprise, it appears that the “politicising” was instigated by “What’s in it for Winston” himself!

Apparently the Governer General Dame Patsy Reddy was wanting to attend but WinstonFirst blocked it.

Why? Because apparently during the 1990’s Winebox inquiry Dame Pasty worked for Brierley Investments … whom were in Winston’s gun-sights.

If this is true (Plunket said he has heard it from multiple sources) then Sept 20 can’t some soon enough to see NZ’s #1 political charlatan dumped by the good people of NZ!

And the Prime Minister has forwarned Britons to brace themselves for the death of loved ones in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, in New Zealand, Cindy wants everyone to gather together in Christchurch so they can see her wear a pretty scarf on her head.

And Labour’s mayor of Auckland, Phil Goff, cancels the large Pasifika Festival the day before it happens (rather than a week ago giving participants plenty of chance to avoid needlessly spending thousands of dollars) only because of the threat it poses to the Pacific Islands. The threat it posed to Aucklanders, apparently, well that wasn’t an issue.

Van Beynen, after looking at the rising popularity of “mixed martial arts” as entertainment, writes:

    The Min of Health – as Lead Agency
    Welfare Of NZers – NEMA in charge
    (Civil Defence groups come under NEMA)
    Infrastructure – MBIE (Lead Agency)
    Border – Customs lead Agency.
