  Statistics showing how often each number is drawn are readily available. Logically this is a useless indicator of future draws. Lotto has never published statistics on how many buyers back particular numbers. While picking the least purchased numbers does not affect the chance of winning, if you win, it does reduce the chance of having to share the prize.

    Analysis correct. But I do remember seeing, many years ago, some data on the most popular numbers. If I recall right, the high numbers: in the 30s were least popular. ON the rare occasion I bought a ticket, those were what I picked.

      True. People tend to use birthdays/anniversary’s as Lotto numbers.
      So the numbers 12 and under are likely most popular, followed by the numbers 13 through 31, and then finally the numbers above that.
      Pretty sure I’ve seen stats that show that as well.

    Having sold lotto tickets in the past, the vast majority of purchases (>90%, especially for high jackpots) are for ‘dip’ tickets (randomly selected numbers), so those choosing their own numbers would only cause a small deviation between most frequent and least frequently printed numbers.

Tuesday’s Democratic primary results went basically in line with expectations. Biden won Florida, Illinois, and Arizona, all by large margins. Sanders slightly outperformed expectations in Illinois, but that just meant not losing as badly as predicted.

Sanders is quickly running out of chances to turn this around. At this stage he doesn’t have a realistic shot at winning. But I suspect he’ll stay in the race right to the end, for two reasons;

1) To promote his progressive agenda, win or lose.
2) On the off-chance Biden has to drop out for health or other reasons. In that case everything would be up in the air.

  All three primaries were a mess with people not showing up, polling place workers not showing up, voting materials not present, governors trying to cancel them, judges overruling them, governors ignoring the judges and so on leading in some cases to total confusion over whether the primary was on at all.

    Yes, and it is going to have an impact on other related indudtries/services as we change the way we work. For example 1. less demand for office space = less demand for electricity for commercial = over supply = impact on wholesale electricity prices etc.
    
    2. Less office space demand = less demand for cleaners = low paid workers future in question.
    
    This situation has consequences far beyond our inconvenience to buy some loo rolls.

    We work in IT and we are setting up customers to work remotely especially those in administrative roles. This is how we can beat the bug. We work from home doing this job, the fridge is always full and accessed after 5.00pm only. Discipline is essential, so no mowing the lawns, hanging out the washing, and other non-productive activities

        I love my JCM800 but rarely get the chance to use it given how damned loud it is. I spend more time with my AC30 (still loud) and DSL40, but most of the time at practice a Fender Champ with a 12 inch speaker does the trick nicely.

        I’ve modded mine with two switches – the first one cuts the negative feedback wire that comes from the speaker and goes into the second triode on the 12AX7. The second mod turns on a 22uF capacitor that goes from cathode to ground on the second triode of the 12AX7. This is like a boost switch with a bit of dirt.

The problem with Jacindas call to self isolate instead of being tested is they don’t know the amount of Machines they have to help those with breathing problems and no one can tell them exactly how many they have. The article condemning this fact has been removed and as the journalist that made this known said to put in a request to the minister why would take months to get a answer.

    Just taking this a little further, lets say there are 10% of these beds available which I doubt, that would see the elderly cut loose as in Italy, just need 466 cases, this is could be within the next month.
    Interesting times.

  I think I saw somewhere that we have 200 or so ventilators in the whole country, along with gear from surgical theatres that can pressed into service. That will be wholly inadequate.
  We have very little time – I don’t know if it’s practical, but could we quickly mass produce old-style iron lungs, made of plywood? powered by a vacuum cleaner?

Starting on the 1ST April 2020. It is all smoke and mirrors just like the type of promises Peters made for his supporters in 2017 . This time it is bottom line . “April Fools” .   Nat Super is not it seems a “main benefit”. It may only mean the unemployment benefit or whatever its presently named.
  I get Nat Super, Accomodation allowance, WWF and Medical costs and it’s not clear from MSD about future payment rates.

Stats NZ is reporting that in the year to January, 27,554 on student visas arrived here. That number will decrease this year clearly, and the change will flow through to various sectors – edu institutions and their staff, accommodation, entry level jobs (student visas allow 20 hours work a week).

While that is tough on the edu sector, it frees up accommodation and jobs, at a time when both will be needed for locals. Including potentially tens of thousands of our people returning home.

We will also see those on work visas leaving if their jobs disappear or they decide to go home in the current circs.

Definitely big shifts in the job and accommodation market on the way.

  Have to say it worked brilliantly. All the usual media suspects cheered, and Bridges got a roasting for daring to highlight the fact it had nothing to do with Coronavirus.

  $25 makes a huge difference to those at the lowest levels of income. Those at the lowest levels of income are the most likely to suffer the greatest health consequences. think of it more as a fence before the end of the cliff, so we don’t run out of ambulances at the bottom.

        The trickle down effect of the benefit increase will go a long way to support business. Businesses such as fast food outlets, liquor stores, gambling dens, tobacco retailers and drug dealers.         This is an ideologically driven Government who has form in using opportunities to push through their ideologically driven policies rather than what is needed.
        
        Yes, it’s tranche 1 but that just means that they’re planning on more ideologically driven opportunistic policies rather than actually dealing with the crisis.
        
        At this point I’d suggest they actually want this crisis to hit hard. It increases their ability to push through their agenda while claiming it has something to do with the Virus (which it doesn’t) and claiming any opposition as being politics.

    The clustering of poor outcomes is because bad decision making is not random. People who make bad decisions about education are also most likely to make bad decisions about controlling their fertility, smoking, eating junk, not exercising, “tapping” their kids, etc etc etc.

    I agree. So those on welfare could have been given a one-off payment of $500 with advice to PUT IT ASIDE for any extra expenditure related to the virus.
    
    What is the rationale for a permanent increase? Nothing to do with the virus. It was simply used as a ploy to increase benefits.

When if National were government and announced the same thing they’d happily agree it was the best action. 475 die of covid19 in one day in Italy.

Well is that really such a big deal?

Due to the natural attrition of life and death, over 2000 people die in Italy every day. Most of those are old people dying of things old people die of: pneumonia, heart failure, etc.

Nobody actually dies of covid-19. You die of pneumonia, heart failure etc. However if you are infected with covid-19 at the time then you’re counted as a covid-19 death.

Covid-19 deaths are almost exclusively older people with underlying medical conditions – ie primed and loaded to pop their clogs.

Covid-19 is just taking them a bit sooner: maybe a few days for some, maybe a few years for others, but the majority probably a year or less.

In short, the impact on the vast majority of those people is relatively low and the actual impact of the deaths on society is low.

What is high though is the cost of ICU care (which was going to happen for many) and the cost of the headless-chook mode we all seem to have got into.

  I am not sure our ICU or HDU could cope. there are only about 220 beds in ICU in the country or 11 per DHB.
  They would be swamped with the numbers Italy is seeing.
  Despite this all we saw in Robbos hand out was 30 million for ICU support. Not new ICU capacity, not new staff (if you can find any) but for support.
  I think we need to be prepared for sudden announcements closing things down. there was a hint of that in the PM’s suggestion that we be prepared.

      ICU’s see an increase in workload every winter due to pneumonia precipitated by colds and flu
      
      In many cases with the elderly if they develop pneumonia it is demed as desirable to provide palliative care only and let nature take its course – this happened with my father.
      
      Of course when this outbreak does tke hold such a decision will be cast in the media as rationing ICU care

    I am optimistic that we shouldn’t be too scared by Italy. Other countries, doing very similar things to us and further down the track than us, seem to be managing the situation more effectively. Don’t get me wrong – things could still get messy, but I doubt as extremely messy as Italy.

        My first priority would be contingency plans for dealing with a much larger number of people who are sick, need hospitalisation but don’t necessarily need specialised ICU care (i.e., stopping as many as you can from needing ICU care). I think that’s more feasible than creating and equipping a lot of fancy ICU units at short notice. But that’s just me.

      It is a ward of a dozen beds or so partitioned with curtains with 24×7 nursing staffing. The equipment wasn’t all that specific.

    It is not a matter of caring if people die. It is reality.
    
    Covid19 does not just randomly tap old people on the shoulder. It almost exclusively takes old, SICK, people – ones with preexisting health conditions and therefore already prone to the normal winter die off via.
    
    Sure, there are some people who are dying with no preexisting conditions but they are very few and far between.
    
    If you don’t smoke (better still never smoked), don’t have cancer or diabetes and are in good health then you’re most likely fine – same as for “normal” flu.
    
    If you’re healthy then your chances of dying, or even getting a serious infection, are pretty low.
    
    Italy is having a high mortality because they are one of the oldest countries, with huge smoking rates and filthy air.

    Are you suggesting that China is under reporting numbers? The numbers of new cases are now very low, and are explained (by China) as in Wuhan or from new arrivals.
    
    It is very possible that earlier numbers were too low while the country got its arms around the problem and its reporting. China will be very aware it needs to keep faith with its export markets and that faith could disintegrate if it can be shown that new numbers are incorrect.

  Dotcom has been going though the court process since 2020 and has seen out three different NZ governments. Obama who instigated the process in his first term has complete his second and is long gone.

Note that many of these (particularly more recently) also include domestic flights to their final destination. Thats potentially hundreds more points of contact, both on the planes and at airports (and I bet checks/cleaning is a lot more lax/non-existent for domestic vs international).

    What’s going to happen when SF stops cleaning their streets? Approx 50% of SFs street cleaning effort is spent on cleaning up after the homeless.
    
    Where are the homeless going to get food? Many, perhaps most, depend on burglary which is not going to happen when homeowners are in lockdown – not even in California.

2. Test test test the most vulnerable until the danger passes.

  Sure, that’s all we were testing for, though.
  It’s only been in the last couple of days (results still to be made public) that the Min of Health has recommended a more relaxed criteria for testing.
  
  Before this if you were showing symptoms but hadn’t recently returned from overseas or been in close, prolonged contact with someone recently returned, you didn’t get tested for the virus.
  
  So, we are still waiting to see if there has been any/much community transmission to date.

  The danger will never pass: there will be a wave of deaths, and then the disease will become endemic and the survivors (which will be most of us) will get used to it. The Government may be able to influence the details (smoothing down the peak may reduce the total deaths somewhat), but not the basic story.
  But when we arrive at the “getting used to it” stage, how different will society look, and how much damage will have been done in the mean time?

    A Vaccine should resolve this, though if this specific virus continues to evolve in the same way that the influenza one does, then any vaccine has a moving target to hit and will need continuous updating. There will also be a less than 100% coverage if the target virus mutates the area that the vaccine is aimed at.

The China virus jumped across to us, because in a market some animal diseases co-mingled. There are thousands of those barbaric markets in China and therefore it is always a likely occurrence.

In the West we do not have those markets, but we all have reusable carrier bags. Bags where the spillage from several animals may co-mingle if the bags are not washed. And we have billions of those in circulation.

    As it happens my wife & I have the house to ourselves and could pretty much survive survive with minimal contact with anyone else for months at a time.
    My wife’s brother lives in a house of maybe ten people spread across three generations.
    By pooling resources he lives a pretty good life.
    That’s in Chiang Rai, but I’d say there would be plenty of people living that way in Auckland.
    If one of us got the bug I could move into the spare room for the duration. Not so easy if there is no spare room & social distancing isn’t possible.

Hosking interviewed a Chris-somebody from The Naked Scientist on the radio this morning who said that if we closed down schools then children would go hungry because the State is providing breakfast and lunch. If it has got to the point where people are that dependent on government-run schools to feed their kids then something is very wrong.

      Regardless, there isn’t yet a good reason to close schools. It causes all sorts of other problems including teenagers going out during the day, while keeping them together and away from the general population is more ideal.
      
      It also means that unless we close businesses too, kids will end up with grandparents etc who are much more vulnerable than the kids.

A doctor has said that the scans they’ve done of young people with the virus have been terrifying. People who have had no previous medical problems…

A Belgian doctor working to battle the coronavirus says he’s treated several seriously ill young patients – and their lung scans were “nothing short of terrifying,” according to reports.

Dr Ignace Demeyer, who works at a hospital in the city of Aalst, said an increasing number of people between the ages of 30 and 50 have presented with severe symptoms, despite having “blank medical records” that show no underlying conditions that would make them high-risk, the Brussels Times reported.
“They just walk in, but they are terribly affected by the virus,” Dr Demeyer told the Belgian broadcaster VRT.

He said CT scans indicated they were suffering from severe lung damage.
“The images we took yesterday are nothing short of terrifying,” he told the station.

“They are people who do not smoke, who have no other conditions such as diabetes or heart failure.”

It’s probably time for the government to look at the issue of equal access to supermarkets to reassure people about provisions in future.

I would suggest something like allocating days of the week for shopping – in store, or on-line. Based around the first letter of the surname – proof of ID at checkout for this (they already have surnames for on-line).

1/7th, or so, for each of the days.

Just the idea of such a system being considered/developed might be enough to reduce panic buying now.

  Groceries and everything else retail should be home delivery. 24 hour operations of minimum staff density in supermarkets. Use newly unemployed. Put non-perishable deliveries in garage for a day or two before handling (same with all other deliveries).
  
  It’s not rocket science, I am sure coalition can get it done with a bit of help from capable managers.

    Whether the on-line system would have the capacity even then …

    Extra vans, extra staff, fuel and vehicle maintenance. Plus how long would it actually take to home deliver to everyone? Bearing in mind not everybody lives 10 minutes from a supermarket – my nearest supermarket is 30 minutes away and I live in Auckland!

The perils of the blogging world: My recent fight to get a “fair go” from Martyn Bradbury’s TDB has taken its toll on my state of mind, & fueled a hate filled thirst for revenge. I know, soon, if Andrew Little has his way, I’ll be arrested by the hate speech police for saying such things. Anyway, it all began when they started to suppress my reasonably well thought out comments. It then became obvious that Bradbury &/or his editorial mates, don’t take criticism of their ideological views & occasional plagiarism very well. I tried contacting TDB about their editorial policy through their listed email address. I then discovered that it is not possible to email them. This was very frustrating as all I wanted was to have open & honest communication with Bradbury about these matters. This censorship of my views on his public platform & the inability to resolve these things brought out the worst in me, the angry old street wise punk who’s never to far from the surface. I then responded with a few extremely choice & threatening comments (which I now regret). Of course they published these comments, which was an obvious ploy to bad mouth & discredit the pseudonym I was commenting under. Most people commenting on TDB use pseudonyms so this is not unusual. As I’ve a little street credibility for doing my bit to make a difference in my own way, my response to this strategy was to out myself, & suggested to them that they should also do the same. Of course they chose not to. So after all this drama Bradbury made a big heroic song & dance blog about his life being threatened & referred my message to the cops. I then admitted defeat, pulled my head in for a while & took some time out to cool down. Recently though I was stirred into action again by the covid-19 crisis & the current attacks on free speech. I decided to begin commenting again on TDM under both my real name & my new FortressNZ pseudonym. This was obviously a stupid move, as just as before, my recent comments have been suppressed. I’m not really a hateful person but I do hold grudges against those I feel have wronged me, & Bradbury & his reactionary PC admin cronies sure have. I’m no spring chicken & I don’t have much longer in this world, but one of my last missions before I pass over will be to find a way to exact revenge on the cowardly TDB racket. I don’t have anything to loose & I don’t care what anyone thinks of me or what happens to me anymore, so I will find a way to resolve this matter. If TDB doesn’t do the descent thing & publish my side of this story, then I’m at a loss to know what I can do to hold Bradbury & his cyber space warrior freaks to account. Of course, if they’re really interested in resolving the matter Bradbury could always communicate with me via email. No chance of this, as Bradbury’s inflated ego would not allow him to entertain such a thought. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Good luck with the war against Covid-19 everyone.

Life is getting a bit like World War Three where being a young World War Two London person we understood what was required of us without having been dictated to on a daily basis on how to live and what to do.
Now it is getting like the fact that our Leader Wynston Ardern, like Goebbels, in dictating and manipulating their dictate to everything.
What we can expect is worrying, as it will be their continually trying to control everybody and our every thoughts to support their brand of Social Control via their abuse of Parliament aided and abetted by the so called Media.
I am very elderly so it does not seriously worry me but for by family to come does.

It is a big fucking joke. China allows their citizens to stack crates of live exotic animals on top of each other at food markets. These animials intermingle, defecate over each other, then get eaten by humans. Virus’s are just looking to mutate and jump species in such an environment.

Fonterra had a slightly dirty pipe at one of their milk plants. Noone died, but New Zealand’s reputation was maligned by China.

Now china is likely to be responsible for a global economic disaster and possibly millions of deaths because of their ‘food safety’ standards … Ironic.

I am stuck somewhere where I cannot yet organise to go or stay. If that little cunt is telling me I won’t be allowed back into my own country when I can finally sort it out, he should say so. If what he means is something different he should say so. These sort of comments just make matters worse, and are an utterly irresponsible contribution to this panic. If Winston wants to come over and help me and my already very anxious family to organise our return travel, I am happy to tell him where I am staying. If not, he should shut the fuck up with his sweeping bullshit and start dishing out some facts.

    She’s either clueless or lying. At 10x per fortnight growth rate seen everywhere that doesn’t have spectacularly good testing and contact tracing (Not NZ!) we are 2-3 weeks away from lockdown.
    
    Most cases are non-symptomatic, Govt did effectively zero (10/day) testing up until last few days and it is clearly too late, the people who will be jamming up our hospitals in 2 weeks are already infected.
    
    Ignore Winston’s idiots and get yourself ready for extended lockdown before the panic sets in a few days prior.

    I listened to her barking dictates from a written speech on tv tonight. What a bastardisation of the English language. For someone with a degree in Communications, she is a F_ing disgrace.
    As to content, too late. Her and her bunch of like minded F_wits should have started out strong and then walked the plan backward as it returned required results. Lets face it, there was no plan, just an espousing of a bunch of feel good statements that were incapable of being measured hence the barking of her present dictates hoping the ever obliging MSM will come to her rescue.   I think the problem is transiting through third countries.
  There is no problem with NZ citizens or permanent residents coming home. However planes from the EU or UK cannot bring Kiwis through the States, for examples.
  Some people are stuck in Lima because they can’t get out. Others are being bumped off planes halfway on technicalities and having to buy new tickets at great expense.

Earlier this year, my partner had a client keen on buying a Porsche out of the UK.
When he originally quoted him back in January, they were looking at a landed price of around 74 th0usand pound. Today, the price is 86 thou. Needless to say the buyer has lost interest, he can get a similar car from the local dealership for less – and they’re real keen to do business.

A few hours later she’s lying out the other side of her mouth announcing a lockdown in the form of border closures not being premeditated.
