It was reported earlier this week that an Asian fellow (has lived in NZ for a number of years) and his friends were brutally assaulted at Rotorua swimming spot. No description of the multiple attackers was given.

Coulter’s Law says that the longer it takes for the description to be given, the greater the probability that the perpetrators are not white.

You just know that if the attackers were white, this would be called a racially motivated attack and used as an example as to why we need hate crime laws.

  The same happened with the gun robbery by teenagers in Auckland. Though in that, the media slipped up. The photo of the AOS having arrested them at Morningside Station showed that they were definitely not white.

  …and that is how we know that “Coulter’s Law” is horseshit.
  
  Anyone with a modicum of reasoning ability and a passing familiarity with statistics and an appreciation of causality will twig that probability applied to the outcome of an event that has already happened is nonsensical. The idea that waiting to report the race of the alleged attackers can change that race is swivel-eyed lunacy.

      It didn’t take long for this “law” (which I quoted verbatim) to be downgraded to a “proposition”, did it?
      
      Let’s pretend that you are correct and examine whether the “proposition” stands up to scrutiny; the media can clearly avoid identifying the race of any offender (once the courts have convicted) entirely so any identification at any time post conviction voids your proposition.

        Publication of name or photograph often suffices to identify non-white. Reporting the case outcome usually involves both. Other sources can render further delay pointless at any time. Different media have differing degrees of wokeness.

I know it’s my fault for logging onto Stuff in the first place but this article has done a good job at spoiling the start of my day:

Two issues immediately come to mind here. Firstly, if there are place names in New Zealand that don’t have a Maori equivalent, will they be forced to choose a Maori name, and if not, who will be responsible for picking such a name?

But more interestingly, if indeed our road signs are to be truly bilingual, does this mean that all Maori place names will have to take an English equivalent? On reading the article I get the feeling that the answer to this one is no. The real aim of the idea is to simply promote Maori place names by stealth.

I actually don’t have a problem with bilingual road signs per se, it’s just that I want to see a mutuality of respect for both cultures. If we’re going to have Maori titles for every town and city on our road signs, I’d like there to be English equivalents too.

      I’m in two minds on dual-language signs.
      
      It would beat the path of State radio, State TV, and our State-subsidised newspapers of pumping so much Maori into English that they would turn it into a regional pidgin language.
      
      I would prefer to be either in English, or in Maori, rather than in some pidgin, Woke, version of English.

  Well I do have a problem with “ bilingual signs”
  ROAD SAFETY.
  Efficient road signs convey a message as clearly and briefly as possible.Too many signs or bilingual writing on a sign means the message will be less clear and could even be classified as a distraction.
  This is recognised by traffic engineers
  Information overload is a recognised traffic issue
  To be effective Road signs should be in the major language used in the country only.
  
  In New Zealand the proposed bilingual signs would use international accepted language .
  But proposed additions would only be understood by less than 5% of the population in this country and would be totally unintelligible to visitors

  JW if I was still living in NEW ZEALAND I’d have a yellow can of paint in my car at all times and any dual language sign would ensure the sign was showing it’s original name. You won’t see any signs that are in Maori showing the English name underneath so bilingual signs are therefore racist.

  Stuff proudly continues its Woke crusade on Christmas eve, celebrating Maorication of a historic, colonial Canterbury pub.
  
  It was Ocean Bay Hotel for 110 years, then called the Smugglers’ Arms for 20 years, then the Governors’ Bay Hotel for 20.
  
  “Governors’ Bay”? How horridly colonial? That’s the name of the area. Well obviously the pub change gets the ball rolling and the bay name will change. Then “Banks Peninsula” and soon “Christchurch”.
  
  The pub now takes a vowel-heavy Maori name starting with a capital “O” complete with a macron, and the beer market will just have to learn how to pronounce it.
  
  Merry patrons phoning for a cab won’t get their tongue round it and the cab receptionist will think it’s a prank call from Tonga.
  
  Keep it up Stuff! We’re going into the busiest time of year for renewal of newspaper subscriptions.

        I did actually, and it really jarred. Having spent 7 years in the Pacific where the language is alive I am well aware of macrons. They are very frequently dropped by native speakers as insignificant. They typically denote a long vowel and users are expected to know their own pronunciation. The article form “O te..” or “Oamaru” almost never has the macron.
        
        The Maori that was, is being ruined by wannabe activists.

  Maybe their legal teams have advised them that if the weather forecast cannot be understood, especially by Maori who don’t speak Maori, and people do not get the appropriate extreme weather warnings, and there is loss of life, that the weather service may be held liable or be under fire.
  
  At least that’s the argument I’m putting forward in the hope that some legal boffin will pick up on the idea and sanity (and 100% English) can be restored to at least the weather reporting.
  
  Something similar happened in the big Canterbury snow in 1992, where the weather service reported the “possibility” of snow.
  
  The 1992 snow storm killed over one million stock in Canterbury and damaged buildings in the Christchurch and surrounding areas. Its overall economic impact was estimated to be somewhere between 50 and 100 million dollars.
  
  Every time after that if snow was a possibility, the weather service predicted “heavy snow” even when it was a light dusting. Legal butt covering!

      The problem is how do you define it without most maori actually being pakeha. The top google result is a “Māori-language term for New Zealanders primarily of European descent” which would include most of those who identify as maori. The way the term is used is essentially an arbitrary distinction between “us” and “them” which is the very foundation of hate speech.

  If he’s back to tee rayoh tonight, you can assume he got a good kicking for straying from the reservation.
  However, if he presents an English language forecast two nights in a row, it will be the result of an edict from management. Which would be very good news, and probably the result of feedback from viewers.

Will not be legal in 7 weeks when new ‘kind’ rules kick in, unless there are specific circumstances. Landlords are well aware, no need for a nod or a wink. (Agreed.)

  As always there must be something else going on.
  
  She says she has always paid the rent on time. Landlords don’t evict tenants that are reliable payers.
  
  She’s never been the subject of a complaint. Landlords don’t evict quiet and responsible tenants.
  
  Something about the change to yearly rent review. That’s a red herring, just means the rises will be bigger.
  
  Something about upgrading the bathroom. That can take that out of service for weeks if a minor change or months for a bigger upgrade, but I’d be talking with the tenant about how to do that before evicting.
  
  So either there’s some other problem with the tenant, or the landlord believes it will be too difficult to do the upgrades with a tenant in situ. In any case, 90 days is a heck of a lot of time, notwithstanding the time of year.

    Or the owner has decided to sell, maybe after a zhoosh up. It’s a sellers market atm, but landlords are evil, have tax rules other businesses don’t have and must be forced to obey an exploding number of regulations on pain of large fines.
    
    It can be tricky to sell with a tenant in situ for several reasons, such as untidy tenants, untidy grounds, tenants who don’t want buyers going through, hard or impossible to do stuff like painting or flooring or bathrooms. And then there is the possibility tenants can’t find anywhere else and don’t move. Consider how the buyer and seller deal with that one! Tenants only get half the 90 days notice if it is not given until a sale is unconditional.
    
    Or the owner will upgrade to meet new standards and relet for a lot more money.

  Something needs to be done about media bias. Not just in NZ either but the spin they put on the ‘news’ probably influences enough swing voters to determine the outcome of elections. State funded media, which let’s face it after Ardern’s selfless largesse is now most of it, needs to be impartial and there should be a body ensuring that happens. Genuinely private media can do whatever they like and suffer the commercial impact of being partisan (or not). Government funding leading to pro-government bias is pretty much the definition of corruption.

Because if even after explaining in detail complete with countries’ itinerary to xe what I would be doing, xe’s still asking that question, the conversation is not going anywhere. Happy Christmas to all on KB – especially those who have an involvement in agricultural enterprises.
Thanks to the dairy and other livestock farmers who get up day after day, week after week rain or shine to milk cows, tend sheep, raise chickens and grow crops to feed people and generate income earning exports.
Also to all the associated industry support businesses and workers.
Interestingly last week or so, when Mr Robertson announced the GDP figure, he said the better than expected result was thanks to the dairy industry receipts.
That must have been a disappointment to the haters in the Green Party ………..

  Free market immigration is generally positive for the receiving country.
  
  The best, brightest and most motivated people are more likely to be the ones that leave their previous countries and move to better places where their talents can be used for maximum effect. Those attributes also those of people who are most likely to succeed and build businesses etc.
  
  What is far more problematic is welfare-driven immigration. That just attracts people coming for a hand out. They don’t build much. They just end up being a drain on society.
  
  Those two very different types of immigrant should not be lumped together.

    Fast population growth as a quick and easy way to turn NZ into a top little technology country has been a mirage.
    
    With our immigration rate having been probably the highest of Western developed countries, our surging population has outpaced economic growth, putting huge pressure on infrastructure.
    
    Fast population growth lowers our wealth relative to other countries. As noted here before, we’ve slipped out of the top 40 countries measured by GDP per capita.

The Democrats facilitated voting, the numbers of voters increased, therefore the increase in turnout was all fraudulent votes for Biden.   The first calls that I know of in tightening the border now, came from Baker last week. He was calling for tests before departure to NZ. The proof of his point is that the safest situation for NZ would be when there are no Covid cases arriving here – as they are prevented from getting on the plane. There was our own minister David Clark in NZ.
In the UK they had scientific adviser Professor Neil Ferguson who broke his own lockdown rules to meet his married mistress.
Now in the US, Coronavirus task force leader Dr. Deborah Birx has broken her own lockdown rules.

Just prior to Thanksgiving, Birx told Americans it would be dangerous to hold Thanksgiving with anyone other than immediate family, meaning those you already live with. And what did she go and do…?

According to the far-left Associated Press (AP), Birx proved she believes those rules are unnecessary by flagrantly violating them.

“The day after Thanksgiving, she traveled to one of her vacation properties on Fenwick Island in Delaware,” the AP reports. “She was accompanied by three generations of her family from two households. Birx, her husband Paige Reffe, a daughter, son-in-law and two young grandchildren were present.”

In my opinion, that’s not even the worst of it. Get this…

Birx “and her husband have a home in Washington,” according to the AP. “She also owns a home in nearby Potomac, Maryland, where her elderly parents, and her daughter and family live, and where Birx visits intermittently.” Here’s the kicker: “In addition, the children’s other grandmother, who is 77, also regularly travels to the Potomac house and returns to her 92-year-old husband near Baltimore.”

So while Birx is advocating that we all get locked down to save Grandma and Grandpa, while Birx is advocating that no one be allowed to visit the elderly in nursing homes, she’s been out visiting extended family and getting visits from a 77-year-old grandmother who goes home to a 92-year-old man!

What’s everybody got planned for lunch tomorrow?

I’ve had the local Deli prepare us a ‘Turducken’.
Picked it up this morning ….cost a small fortune. They reckon it takes about 5 hours to cook @180, so fingers crossed it turns out okay. Will probably do my fab crispy roasties, pumpkin, leeks, and buttered peas to go with it. Apparently the pan- juices will make about 2 liters of gravy.
Follow that with a store bought NY Cheesecake topped with fresh rasberry sauce. All washed down with a magnum or two of Moet.
If there’s anything left over, I might do what I did last year, pack it in one of those polystyrene bins and uber it to The City Mission.

It’s just under 12 hours till Christmas day.
I hope everyone has done their Christmas shopping and are sitting down to an afternoon of relaxation with friends and family.

  Trump is abusing his constitutional power of pardon. It should indeed be abolished, as Carteron suggests, and replaced with a bipartisan committee, with very tightly-defined guidelines whereby pardons / prerogatives of mercy would be few and far between (as they are, for example, in New Zealand).

However I’d like to know the compensation paid by (P & I Club) in the US.

After 40+ years of catering for Hubby’s Russian Xmas as he remembers from his childhood in Palmerston North (!)…. I have perfected cunning shortcuts..

I no longer spend 2 days baking kulich and pirozhki.

Instead of Kulich Hubby buys in 2-7 Panettone cakes and they might last through to Easter (depending on # of visitors).

For the pirozhki, I make up a modified version of F-in-law’s yeast dough recipe and only give it one rising…then I cut out large circles of dough for the cabbage/onion/boiled egg filling.

No-one seems to taste any difference between delicate little finger-sized dumplings and fist-sized pasties.

Means I’m done by early afternoon on Xmas Eve….and even had time to go swimming & lunch out.

    I saw two guy come to blows over a car park outside my house once.
    Both the old guy who tried to hit the young guy thru his window & keyed his car & the young guy who thumped him and left him on his arse in a state of bewilderment on the footpath were pakeha.
    It was over in a flash before anyone could intervene, least of all the police who came along asking questions the next day.
    The young guy came by as well a couple of days latter looking for witnesses, but I has no sympathy for him so I told him I saw nothing. He’d whipped in and pinched the space while the old guy was about to back in.
    The point of that wee story is that road rage can effect anyone.

  Sounds like the old man, by his own admission, was driving even slower than an 81-year old normally drives, which is very bloody slow, while he was looking for his motel – the one with the flashing neon sign, I’m guessing.
  
  When he was tooted at, with some justification, instead of holding his hand up to acknowledge inconveniencing another road user and as a quick and very effective form of apology, he decided to escalate it and totted back.
  
  He then exchanged words and again by his own account gave as good as he got, and was then punched throw the window. Yes it was cowardly, no it should never happen, yes the perpetrator is an idiot, no, inconveniencing someone is never an excuse for violence.
  
  However he was in some part the author of his own misfortune.

The U.K. and the E.C. are about to announce a trade deal.

The Times reports:

Downing Street sources said the deal would give British companies “zero-tariff, zero-quota” access to EU markets with no role for the European Court of Justice in policing the agreement. It would be the biggest trade deal signed by either side, worth £668 billion.

Parliament is expected to be recalled after Christmas to ratify the agreement before December 31.

Dr Who is destined for the garbage bin. David Tennant was probably the last Dr who was watchable, then the present writer Chris Chibnall took the series to sickly woke. The final episode of the 12th series of the BBC’s sci-fi show attracted a TV audience of just 4.6 million.
This is just below the previous all-time low of 4.7 million, which was set by an episode in 2017.

  Yup, although I quite enjoyed Matt Smith, particularly the 50th show with Smith and Tennant. I dipped out with Capaldi though, and stayed away when the female one started. I understand it was a wise decision, with the shows becoming woke.

Fool me for breaking a virtuous habit and actually watching one news tonight. Long enough to see our great leader exclaim the world coral reef conference to be held in NZ in 5 years time – big deal, apparently, $6m earner. Siouxie Wiles then chimed in. My local 4 Square, and hundreds like it nationwide turn over more than $6m every year. But I guess 4 Square stores don’t scream “trendy”or “climate change”….
