The ruling on Gypsy Day by the Broadcasting Standards Authority has brought that organisation to new levels of ridicule and public opprobrium. Not only is there a Mr Cant as the complainant who has too much time on his hands (now that is a surname that can conjure up a lot of nominative determinism), but the BSA actually found it was a racial slur. This appears to have been the news item that was complained about. Thousands of farmers on the move for annual Gypsy Day | 1 NEWS | TVNZ
I mean “Hello”. The expression is a very good way of describing the sharemilkers changing farms and all the disruption it causes in theirs and communities lives. It is a descriptive adjective, that is all. Just like pommie suntan, English breakfast, Indian summer or Aussie salute. The term is not used as a slur, never has been, and most people in NZ have no knowledge of the issues of the Roma or why most countries in Europe put very severe restrictions on their activities. Remember that group of English rogues that were here several years ago doing littering and theft. They were identified as “travellers”, the modern term for gypsies. Littering, theft and general chaos: The British tourists who sparked a global saga – NZ Herald I notice Mr Cant did not appear to have complained about that news report.
Most public holidays, a travelling group of arty people descend on our local domain and set up their self-described “gypsy fair”. Are they going to be found at fault as well? Or does wokedom extend only so far?
If a politician was looking for a quango to reform, the BSA would be an easy target. Cant and Television New Zealand Ltd – 2020-071 (21 December 2020) (bsa.govt.nz)
As for me, I can’t wait until June 1st comes round again. I have already renamed it in my calendar.

  Who is it a slur against tho? Is it an insult to the moving farmers or is insulting to the gypsy people for others to assume the name that arent truly part of that race/culture?

      soft, yes even old series of Minder mentioned them in Arthur and Terry’s cockney way. I don’t think all Gypsies are tidy people when they uproot and move to other areas. In an episode of Black Books the actress Fran was contacted by a family of ‘relatives’ who made much use of her car as transport. Though not referred to as Gypsies they did come from East Europe. These true comedies of course are now frowned upon by ‘liberals’.

      One of my brothers-in-law is a lawyer for the Travellers. He also has a professional assistance stall at the Appleby Horse Fair every year.

      I have been begging him to take me ever since I found out (of course since that involves flying to the UK, who even knows when that could happen now). My BIL uses “Travellers”, unless otherwise requested [some Irish Travellers do not identify as Romany]. True story: my BIL was paid (and accepted payment) in chickens one time… whenever I see him, the stories are beyond entertaining. He’s fiercely protective of them though, most simply aren’t like the grifters that hit NZ a couple years back, and there’s a lot of old and deep-seated prejudice.

      They always used to be called “gyppos” rather than gypsies, which has a somewhat romantic feel about it. Travellers is just another name for the (in the UK, mostly Irish) people that descend on a suitable plot of land and set about destroying it.
      
      A guy I worked with in London was in a bus that went past a gyppos illegal encampment, and as the coach went past some little gyppo oik came out and threw half a brick at the back window, smashing it. When the driver stopped and got out, 20 or so thugs appeared from nowhere so he got back in the coach and drove off, with jeers ringing in his ears. Just scum, most of them. In-bred trailer trash who can’t even afford a proper trailer.

We got a couple of puppies of the same breed back in august from 2 different breeders.
Its very noticible that 1 came from working lines as it shows greaf interest in stock and rounding up other animals, the other although lovely nature is pure pet material and is only good for pats and friendship and totally useless for anything else

My point is that how come we can accept that dogs can have working on others laziness in their blood and it can be passed down through breeding yet we cant accept that humans could be the same?

Intergenerational poverty and dole dependance is 1 example of that, dont get me started on stoopid people breeding… theres that movie idiocracy that explains that.

    I dont train dogs both were puchased as pets/companions i was just pointing out natural dog behavior passed on in genetics.
    
    But yes your trolling does point out that the training of children by shit dole dependant parents in nz is a huge problem.

        Ive farmed most of my life and had numerous working and hunting dogs dude, left farming and knees to stuffed to run around the hills chasing hogs and deer so onto a new phase of my life hence the pets.

    Brian, the question of “Stoopid people breeding” may be offensive but so too is the offence to the children whose parents cannot provide for themselves let alone any offspring. It’s hardly surprising that the strangers whose hard work is paying their bills, show no respect for these parents’ intelligence. Surely, no-one is so useless that no work can be found for them?   That is why they are lowering the speed limit and putting dividing barriers, bus lanes or Armco barriers everywhere they can. As they lower the speed limit, the time differential with public transport decreases. All that rather than just fixing the roads. Shows where their priorities are.

  I suspect there are some interesting stats around the age of vehicles versus likelihood of surviving a crash. Yet another area where tanking the economy can be directly linked to more deaths (people cant afford to drive newer and safer vehicles).         A couple of points:
        
        1). Never seen a parked diesel/petrol car spontaneously combust. Sure it’s probably happened but not at the rate of electric cars.
        2). Not much has been discussed regarding the repair of electric vehicles. Auto refinish using techniques such a welding, sanding and filling are a lot more risky with an electric car. Effectively you are refinishing a ‘bomb’ . Enjoy your increased premiums in due course as most electric cars will be written off unless minor panel work.
        
        However keep fantasying that electric cars will be the saviour of the world and the Blairite’s nuclear moment

    The WHO statement in my mind is mind blowing.
    Surely vaccines do not Mask the symptoms but stop getting infected for the Virius and stop the ability of infecting others ?
    
    Not too sure at all now whether thats the case.
    
    If there is some truth in this, Then is NZ going to be permanently locked down. ?

  The thing that isn’t clear to me regarding the travel bubbles is preventing cross infection at the airport.
  
  Baggage claim, customs, and other areas where travelers arriving on different aircraft from different origins are forced into close(r) proximity are the primary risk point. How will they keep all those potentially infected arrivals from the US, UK, Pakistan and India separated from the assumed not infected arrivals from the Cook Islands?

  I see the ICC is taking a bit of a hammering for making Steve Smith cricketer of the decade.
  
  I picked up as autobiography last year by Martin Crowe at the local op shop. He wrote about touring Pakistan where Wasim Akram and the boys were bending the ball in circles. Turned out the roughing it up with a bottle top. They didn’t grizzle, they didn’t complain! They did the same themselves!

  Same is happening here, if i had a spare house or 5 id be selling up and cashing in to take advantage of stupid buyers frenzy.
  Id then be putting the proceeds into some form of wealth storage not shares or bank but into the likes of precious metals (physical bullion not paper etfs) at least then when it all falls over you still have something highly valuable and not a piece of paper or a highly devalued house.
  
  My mate is about to put his house on the market, was valued 223k back in february, the agent suggests listing it at 320k for a quick sale or 350k if hes prepared to wait a month or so to sell… not bad for paying under 200k 3yr ago.

  Govt has been borrowing and spending like there is no tomorrow. And it will increase further. As per your link, inflation will be the outcome, so the very low interest rates in NZ will not last forever.
  
  In the mean time, low rates on savings are eroding much needed nest eggs of the older generation, and young generations are taking on excess debt, fueled by the low borrowing rates, which many will be unable to repay when interest rates go back up.
  
  Inflation will further devalue real wealth and there is no indicator that govt will tighten it’s spending belt. Welcome to New Zenezuela.

That means the increase of money changes income distribution in favor of who first receives the new money. Then, depending on the preferences of those who first receive the money, some goods will experience an increase in demand, while other goods will experience a relative decrease. This in turn changes outputs of various goods and ultimately investments.     Worldometers.info is a counter site, not a stats site. They do not have real time data on anything. To provide real time data on on all the metrics they claim, and updated every few seconds, would require a budget many times the size of the US Stats department.
    
    Cost of providing data which involve people, while maintaining a given accuracy, increases exponentially with each doubling of sampling frequency. Which is why a census is only carried out every few years.
    
    Worldometers.info claim to be able to give accurate data on hundreds of metrics, of which population and Covid-19 are two such metrics. It’s all just guesstimates.
    
    Providing data from that site is pointless. even if it happens to occasionally gel with reality. They claim to have accurate stats on Covid-19, updated every few seconds, when even the CDC can only update every few days, and the CDC is the source for all US figures.
    
    We get enough BS from the MSM, no point in adding to it.

  I’m currently reading The Mirror and the Light, the conclusion to Hilary Mantel’s excellent trilogy of novels about Thomas Cromwell. If you haven’t seen it, the TV adaptation of the first wo books, with Mary Rylance as Cromwell and Damian Lewis as Henry VIII is an excellent watch.
  I’m watching Roadkill with Hugh Laurie on TVNZ on-demand at the moment. TVNZ on-demand is fantastic, btw, load of good shows, movies and docos for free.

        I may be showing my age, but before you construct any model, you need reliable data. It’s been nearly 14 months since our government knew about it, 13 months today since Robertson agreed to borrow 19Bn in preparation for it.
        
        You would think by now that given the balls up of the Hendy “Sky is falling – 80,000 will die” model, that our government would have a published the IFR (Infection Fatality Rate) without all the fear porn massaging of stats. The true IFR would be reliable data, but here we are over a year down the track, dozens of Billions in debt and not a single piece of truthful data. God help us!
        
        I’ve no doubt that in the future AI will see such stupidity of man as a threat and attempt to wipe man out.

  This time every year I re-read some interesting books on the human/technology interface going wrong.
  
  It is a sobering reminder that just humans are part of the system and need to be designed into systems. A human failure is really a systems failure. People act they way they do, not the way you want them to.
  
  The concepts are transferable to a wider set of circumstances in the principles of unintended consequences.

  I do expect the surplus liquidity will be re-homed in asset price increases. They have largely exhausted the share-buy-back possibilities. My new book will show the folly and inequity of those purchases.

In any consideration of religious belief systems in New Zealand, their status and relation to “hate speech” – where ‘religion’ seems to be mistaken for ‘race’ – I trust that in any forth-coming legislation from Andrew Little and Jacinda Ardern, all religions will be treated equally.

Being a Covid Casualty and short on cash, I thought I would ask for a personal loan to cover some dental work…

After filling out the form and advising them I was hearing impaired……(yep-dont phone!!!
I get a phone call from someone with a heavy Punjabi accent(could hardly understand what he was saying) confirming my answers on the form.

Then delighted to tell me that I could have a loan at 18.95%.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ferkin robbers.
No wonder the poor get poorer with this attitude.

Customer service is obvioulsy not in Kiwibanks mantra.

Guess I will change to an Aussie owned bank who value their customers and dont rely on patriotism for customers to hang around(the reason I opened an account-a NZ owned bank)

The 6 January elector ‘ballot’ count is going to go down as the greatest troll of all time.

You may or may not know, but the Vice President gets to count the electors. That’s the one thing the Constitution makes crystal clear. Apparently the plan is for Mike Pence to roll in a Dominion voting machine (or a knock off that looks like one). He’s then going to pull out a USB drive, update the software just before the count, and use the machine to count the elector ballots.

Remember, this will be on national television. The count will not only come out fractional, but it will result in more votes than actual electors AND result in Trump winning more electors than Biden.

The chamber is expected erupt in chaos. Obviously the count will be challenged. Pence will then conduct a ‘recount,’ but he will use the machine to print the recount ballots and then hand count those. The recounted number will be similar to the original count, only changing by a couple votes, but it will result in Trump winning by even more than before.

Dems are expected to cry “fraud” and Pence will object and call for order. He will tell them that it’s too late to challenge because it’s already done. The count is finished. He will then deliberately wipe the machine’s software.

Wikipedia tells me, though, that Galileo did not recognise it as a planet, and also that two other astronomers also observed it before its discovery proper.

There is much talk of “no evidence” of election fraud (despite a tsunami of evidence and more coming every day) and “no evidence” of Biden’s culpability for influence peddling, Spygate, etc.

There is a sentiment, especially among those who assign some credulity to the MSM, of “is that all you got?” when it comes to the question of just who will occupy the White House after 20 Jan 2021. The narrative seems to be that if such evidence exists, it would be out in the public view by now.

I think there is a very good reason why we have not yet seen any of the massive amount of data collected by military intelligence in connection with the mandate for such data to be collected contained in Trump’s 2018 EO designating federal elections as ‘critical infrastructure’. But first, lets consider the non-military stuff out there.

What is becoming increasingly clear is the wide scope of the Durham investigation. Durham is operating as an independent special prosecutor, able to pursue indictments in any state he chooses. He has also recently been given permission to use classified information for the purpose of any indictments. This massive shoe may well drop before the Jan 6th Congressional session and may be a part of Showman Trump’s big plan to knock Biden out of contention along with many of his criminal associates. But maybe Durham is a swamp creature and he will not step up for this historical role in the play.

What is left, then? What if the state legislatures refuse to act? What if lower courts and SCOTUS do not open any judicial remedies? What if Durham and any other DOJ investigations come to nothing?

What is left is is the military intelligence that DNI Ratcliff was responsible for digesting into a report that was due and delivered on Dec 18th, detailing much of the mischief associated with the 2020 election, including actions by malevolent foreign actors. What is left is all of the information hoovered up off the internet by NSA. What’s left are the cumulative efforts of ASoD Chris Miller (a special forces god in his own right) and Ezra Cohen Watnik (one of the few men trained as a spy and as a special forces operator). Both of these men of unusual character and background for their current high offices were handpicked and placed there with the advice of Gen Mike Flynn, recently pardoned by Trump. Flynn is the uberspook, the spymaster, the intelligence wizard who was so feared by Obama that he was the one person he counselled Trump to exclude from his administration.

These men, and the agencies they lead and the capable teams working within them represent the mightiest intelligence apparatus ever assembled on Planet Earth. They possess resources and technology that is literally beyond most people’s imagination. All of these resources were brought to bear on the 2020 election.

Well then, they say. Why has Trump not unveiled all of this information? The first big reason is that it is highly classified. Not just the information itself, but the methods for collecting it that any disclosure risks revealing. But another big reason is the risks to prosecution.

If Durham’s prosecution is to be successful, if the right’s desire to ‘lock her up’ are to be fulfilled, it will require cases that can make their way through the courts without being thrown out due to procedural defects. Classified information leaked through back channels, no matter how accurate or compelling, risks blowing up any and all of the work that Durham and others have been put together over a period of years.

Thus the military intelligence information gambit is literally the very last card to be played and then only in the event that all others have failed to push the scandal-ridden, influence-peddling Biden out of the way.

I personally hope that Durham is going to drop a f*#@-ton of indictments between now and Jan 6th. I hope this will be enough to sway the body politic in the right direction. I hope that the efforts of Giuliani and Powell, et al, are enough to swing the Electoral College. But if that all is not enough, count on Trump playing his last card, the military intelligence card, to devastating effect.

Cool, hard-to-beat bravery from a British mine-disposal team is outlined in the Telegraph.

“Colonel the Reverend” Robbie Hall (he became a Baptist minister) led an Army disposal team of three inside a dark, flooded gasometer at Beckford, London, to find and defuse a 500kg German bomb. It had plunged through the top during the blitz, and the top was repaired leaving the bomb inside. Suspicion the bomb was there was aroused by a maintenance worker in a routine dive.

The three soldiers were winched down 100ft in the darkness to the surface of 40ft of dank water polluted with decades of poison from gas. From there they dived and found the bomb. The three were able to hoist it into a rubber dinghy. Then by torchlight they found the intact fuse. It then took them an hour to defuse it. By the time they got the bomb out through the airlock at the top of the gasometer they had been in the tank for 11 and a half hours.

Hall and the other two soldiers were each awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal. Bomb-disposal soldiers, among the bravest of the brave, during war aren’t eligible for the Victoria Cross, but many have been awarded the George Cross. The Queen in September raised the George Cross to be equivalent in order to the Victoria Cross.

The account of the disposal is an obituary for Hall behind the Telegraph pay wall, but you can read about it in the evangelical magazine I found on Google (link below). In the first-person account Hall tells of what seems to have been his instant religious conversion when his breathing apparatus seized up in the gasometer and he ingested gunk, which he cleared by vommiting, which also took a blockage out of the breathing gear valve.

This is fundamental because no statute can constitutionally supply rules to the extent that such statute violates the U.S. Constitution.
  
  Thanks to spineless politicians, corrupt state officials and a coordinated effort to undermine the will of the American people in favor of business as usual in the D.C. swamp, we now find ourselves in a place where a stolen election becomes just another one of the miscarriages of justice this town refuses to remedy. The D.C. elites want to sweep these electoral injustices under the rug, just as they have done with countless other scandals such as the Russia-collusion hoax, the Biden-Ukrainian quid-pro quo, and Hillary Clinton’s mishandling of classified information, to mention only a few. The precinct level estimates for Georgia and Pennsylvania indicate that vote fraud may account for Biden’s win in both states. The voter turnout rate data also indicates that there are significant excess votes in Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, and Wisconsin as well. While the problems shown here are large, there are two reasons to believe that they are underestimates: 1) the estimates using precinct level data assume that there is no fraud occurring with in- person voting and 2) the voter turnout estimates do not account for ballots for the opposing candidate that are lost, destroyed, or replaced with ballots filled out for the other candidate

One of the gorls from tennis was telling us last week that they still don’t have possession of the Penthouse apartment they bought off the plans about 3 years ago. Despite all the promises and legal manouverings, since selling their own house they are still having to rent various properties in the meantime, while awaiting council sign-off etc. Costig them a fortune she reckons.

  Fletch, I owned an XY but the rarest I have seen is the XA Phase 4 GTHO, only four made by Ford and one reputedly sold for over AU$1 million. It was an awesome machine and I can understand why the Aussie government banned them from being produced for sale.

    Slide around black vinyl seats. Poor brakes, average handling but straight line grunt.

Stuff headline says: “Samoan church leader dies in Auckland MIQ”.

Click on the headline and it then says:
”Man who died in Auckland managed isolation facility was Samoan church leader”.

Read the whole article and what do we see?
“Whilst his death has been reported to the coroner, Leiloa is said to have died from natural causes.
Acting MIQ deputy chief executive Andrew Milne said the cause of death was unlikely to be Covid-related, as Leiloa was symptom-free and came from a country with no local transmission of the virus.”.
So Stuff presents this article to give the impression that he died from CV19 when it was not true.
Is this really the standard of news reporting we want in NZ? How did it get to this situation?
