Barry Soper has ripped into Jacinda Ardern and the Labour Party over the Trevor Mallard standoff:

Jacinda Ardern preaches about it time and again: How we should all be kind to each other and to look after our wellbeing.

Well, the Prime Minister’s just lost all moral authority to preach to us about niceness, because on that score she’s failed miserably – and so have her Labour sheep in Parliament.

You just had to hear them bleating in Parliament’s debating chamber as National’s Chris Bishop attempted against all odds to move a vote of no confidence in Speaker Trevor Mallard.

Soper’s description of the Labour caucus as sheep is unfair; to sheep. At least you can eat sheep! But otherwise, he makes his point well, and continues to link Mallard to Ardern.

His ending is pretty cutting too:

This case also says a lot about what a cowered society we have become.

I was the only journalist to seek out the aggrieved man to hear his side of the story. Others it seems were too timid, presumably afraid of being labelled themselves for protecting and defending a rapist, as I was on many occasions.

I lived under a hail of social media abuse and vitriol which of course paled into insignificance compared to what Mallard’s target was condemned to live through.

This has been the shabbiest episode of inequality that I’ve experienced since starting work at Parliament before Jacinda Ardern was born.

If this is the Prime Minister’s view of being kind and caring for the wellbeing of others, I’m most certainly not on the team five million to whom she so frequently refers.

I’m with Soper as far as the Team of Five Million goes, itself a one-liner from the PR company paid tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars to give Ardern glib phrases to insert into her speeches. The PM needs to lead from the front on the issue of kindness, and right at the moment the kindest thing she could do for the man falsely accused of rape, is to take Trevor Mallard aside and tell him to quietly resign.

  It’s laughable really.

      Ms Ardern seems to be a girl doing a woman’s job.
      She constantly needs a male to protect and advise her – whether that be a youngish boyfriend or an old father-figure in the form of Mallard.

      Not to forget organ harvesting. The Uighur people are given drugs and extensively tested for something, if not comparability then what else in these confinement camps. The wait time for organ transplants in China is 1 month. You pay big money of course. I suspect even though the CCP says it’s not happening now I’d doubt that very much because people are still being tested and disappearing from these camps

You would have to wonder what the fickle public see in Jacinda with the blame game, lies and excuses she keeps making , so with the latest over the Trans- Tasman bubble a d the insinuations that Austalia pulled a dirty on us when it has always been one way in NZ ‘s favor is a bit rich coming from someone like Jacinda.
Just look at some examples of this Prime Minister that MSM, the Left in Politics a d public fawn all over and had been portrayed by any other Prime Minister these same groups would be calling for their resignation.
Karl Strobeck drug and Immigration case with Jacinda and her friends help and involvement that is still to be resolved.
The sexual deviate out of Jacindas office accused of rape that the Prime Minister promised those complaining she would get Justice for them a a other example of her bullshit and deciet by having this swept under the carpet for all to see.
Ihumatoa land dispute a d the millions of dollars of taxpayers money paid out for a land grab to Maori that the Prime Minister promised she would not get involved in.
Now we have another example and situation over the Trans- Tasman bubble that is a other of her own makings a d she says she feels short changed.

Something smells rotten about the Air NZ engine servicing/Saudi issue.

Where did the Greens get the information from on Monday, that they trumpeted ? It was revealed yesterday that Treasury informed Air NZ 8 days ago that it was seeking more information.

Grant Robertson is the Minister responsible for Treasury. So did Labour “idly” bring this up with the Greens (although why would they)? Or did Labour “leak” this info to the Greens?

If they did why would Labour do so? As a distraction? If so, for what? Perhaps to distract from National calling for the removal of the Speaker, yesterday? Or perhaps to distract from the astounding revelation that Robertson ignored official advice that printing more money and cheap interest rates would push house prices up? Or something else?

Seems very fishy to me. Especially when Ardern came out fully bombastic about how “inappropriate” this all was.

But why did Ardern do that? Since when did NZ have an embargo on Saudi Arabia? As “despicable” as Saudi actions are in Yemen (causing unnecessary death and harm), Iran is equally “despicable” for supporting the overthrow of the Yemeni Govt. Has Ardern and Labour wandered into another foreign policy blunder? Is Ardern and Labour “taking sides”? How will that be perceived?

And as for Air NZ, they didn’t know what a third party was supplying, but why the backtrack? And for goodness sake they were contracted to fix the engines, fix them under contract then send them back before they find their name further tarnished by industry!

Mr Menendez-March took an extended absence from social media throughout January, and there was speculation on social media that he had returned to Mexico to visit his family in Tijuana – as he has does every year.

It is only now after a number of leaks and enquiries that it has been confirmed he has returned from Mexico and is now taking up space in an isolation facility.

Surely any MP with a valid reason for travelling overseas during a global pandemic would explain that prior to leaving, rather than taking an inexplicable absence from social media, making no public statements, actively hiding posts from friends in Mexico who tagged him, and then slipping back into the country.

And this is without asking the questions as to when this trip was booked? When did Mr Menendez-March book his place in the MIQ facility? Did he apply to jump the queue only to be turned down by Chris Hipkins and fail to be supported by James Shaw?

To me it looks like a simple case of an entitled, privileged and hypocritical Member of Parliament secretly travelling overseas for a leisure trip and abusing his position to take up a place in MIQ ahead of more worthy New Zealanders who have been attempting to book place for months.

I think the person that Mallard accused must be a personal friend of Soper as he is the only journalist that has really picked this story up and run with it (and good on him, it deserves to be in the public domain).

Rawiri Waititi complaining about having to wear a symbol of the coloniser’s oppression (i.e. a necktie) in Parliament is the height of hypocrisy.

He did this all the while culturally appropriating an item of the oppressor’s headwear, i.e. a hat.

Moreover, his female colleague was photographed alongside him wearing a necktie, even though female MPs are not required to wear one.

  Case in point look at some of the garbage female pollies have worn in the house over the last decade. A good proportion of them must get changed in the dark with a blindfold on. And yet nothing.

    I think he’s having a lend there. If his lot were wearing hats thousands of years ago, they sure as hell weren’t Stetsons. Stetsons were first created in 1865 FFS and that was after Abel Tasman discovered NZ in December 1642. I don’t think the Dutch were wearing hats like the one this clown is wearing.

Not when Mallard told a select committee last year that he knew within 24 hours that he was wrong, but did nothing to correct the false accusation for months, costing the taxpayer more than $300k to date.

  The Taxpayers Union outed RMM last night, without naming him:
  
  The Taxpayers’ Union understands that a New Zealand Member of Parliament is currently in managed isolation having travelled overseas over the NZ summer break, despite clear Government advice not to travel.
  
  The Union has received the unverified report that the MP arrived back in New Zealand on 1 February, after unsuccessfully applying to jump the queue for an emergency MIQ spot last month. It is understood the application was turned down by Minster Chris Hipkins after consultation with the relevant Party’s leader.
  
  Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, said:
  
  “There may be valid reasons why the MP had to travel overseas – New Zealanders would totally understand if there was a family emergency for example, and it is very unlikely further questions would be asked.
  
  “But the idea that an MP can fail to turn up to work because they are secretly camped out in MIQ is incredible. If true, it is beyond believe that a statement wasn’t put out to at least give the public the heads up that the MP was on personal leave.”
  
  “If indeed we are paying a Member of Parliament to sit in an hotel because they chose to take a trip overseas, that would amount to arrogance in the extreme. Putting aside the needs of other New Zealanders currently desperate for limited MIQ spots, anyone in the private sector would lose their job for this kind of abandonment of employment.”

  Within an hour, the Stuff story broke, with the “serious personal family matter” explanation. Suffice to say, my bullshit antennae were buzzing furiously.
  
  If RMM indeed had a “serious personal family matter”, why didn’t he put out a media release, or the Greens do it on his behalf. As much as I dislike his politics and his attention-seeking, I believe most people would have had a level of sympathy for RMM if he had a genuine reason for leaving the country, other than to take the almost-annual holiday he has to Mexico.
  
  But the horse had already bolted, and most people with an interest in politics already had a good idea it was the Green MP before Stuff confirmed it. He now looks as though he was caught with his hand in the MIQ cookie jar, and as we all know, perception is everything in politics.
  
  I just hope for RMM’s sake that his letter to MBIE asking for an urgent MIQ space didn’t include these words, or a close variant; “don’t you know who I am?”.

    Citizens have rights and it is not illegal for an MP to travel. Hipkins is not all powerful. MP’s are paid a daily sitting fee for attendance and that would not be paid otherwise. His attendance is up to his Party and the rules of the House.
    I’m sure there are bigger issues to charge him with, like excess Green and lack comprehension.

    I’ve seen it reported previously that he’s had his Xmas holidays in Mexico for the majority of the last 8 years and, sure enough, he’s had his Xmas holiday in Mexico yet again.
    
    No worries about the carbon spewing out of those jet engines eh Ricky. No worries about supporting local businesses by taking your holidays in NZ.
    
    Let him tell us exactly why he needed to travel. Come on, if it’s all legit then NZers will understand.
    
    If not, if he continues with the vague ‘family matters’, then we are fully entitled to think the worst, in my view, that it was just another jaunt to family in Mexico to celebrate his election to Parliament.

So in the on-going story of the Maori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi refusing to wear a tie, he has said or written a couple of things.

As he was leaving the chamber, Waititi is reported to have said, “This is not about ties, it is about cultural identity”. And in an opinion piece, Waititi reportedly said he would “never bow my head to Pākehā power. I will never surrender my culture.”

But as far as surrendering one’s cultural identity, or bowing to another culture’s power … isn’t that what all non-Maori are expected to do when we have to sit through powhiri or karakia? I personally would prefer to have a Christian prayer at the opening of important events; that is MY culture.

When a rahui is imposed on a beach or a forest, all New Zealanders are expected to respect that rahui – isn’t that tantamount to “bowing our heads to Maori culture”?

The investigation into the Christchurch mosque attack was initially release to the families of those who died ON A MARAE. Why was a report into an attack on a MOSQUE release to the families ON A MARAE? That sounds very much like the Muslim families were forced to “surrender their culture”.

If Rawiri Waititi can refuse to do something on the grounds that it is not part of his “cultural identity” and it is tantamount to “bowing his head to Pākehā power”, then can we Pakeha ALSO refuse to do something on the grounds that it is not part of OUR “cultural identity” and it is tantamount to “bowing our heads to Maori power”?

Somehow, I suspect the howls of outrage would drown out our attempts to explain our feelings.

  Legally, his ancestors did surrender themselves and all subsequent New Zealanders to follow to the power of the pakeha via the crown. In fact some Iwi deciding to rebel against that power was exactly the mentality that led to the New Zealand wars (rather than the pakeha being racists). No one is stopping him preserving his culture, but the power to decide who wears what in the house lies with the representatives put in place by the crown.

    The dress code for parliament is business attire, which, quite clearly, can vary from culture to culture.
    Here in NZ plenty of businesses do not insist on a tie anymore.
    Times have changed since 1984 when the rule was promulgated.
    Furthermore the much maligned & currently in MIQ MP Ricardo Menéndez March doesn’t wear a tie & nobody makes a fuss, which is pretty amazing.
    I’m surprised Trevor Mallard has so much support considering he’s not exactly the most popular bloke in Wellington right now.

      Representing the people of New Zealand in Parliament is a serious business. It is not solely (or shouldn’t be) a forum for one’s own political fancies, rather a role in which the individual considers the wellbeing of ALL New Zealanders.
      Requiring a formal dress code IN THE HOUSE indicates recognition of the responsibility of MPs, and demonstrates to those who see them that the MPs are treating their constituents with respect.

    Golly G wouldn’t have a bloody clue as to the contracting arrangements within international trading companies, and who gets to see/approve the contracts. For a 3 million dollar contract (suspect minor servicing for that value), the business unit manager likely approved/signed the deal.
    As I understand in this case, Air NZ where contracted via a ‘third party’, that likely is purely a broker for specialist services and Air NZ had no direct contract with the Saudis.

      This is nothing but a storm in an A cup.
      These engines and control modules are to the best of my knowledge retained in a rotatable pool of spares e.g. one in, one out where the pool is maintained by the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).
      When the OEM is inundated with repairs, they often sub-contract out to a suitably approved Repair Authority. The only way Air New Zealand would know who had previously had that equipment installed would be to search Logistic Support data Item’s History.
      Once defects on this equipment are rectified, they go back in the Pool of Spares (not necessarily the Saudi Navy vessels).

In December Mallard issued an apology to the accused Parliamentary staffer, admitting he was wrong – he knew his allegations were false, by his own admission, 24 hours after he’d made them. So he maintained that position until 18 months later and after a defamation battle cost taxpayers $333,600, with further costs still possible through other legal action.

However Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has continued to back Mallard as Speaker despite the fact he “made a mistake”.

Didn’t think much of the stuff/herald rumours that Mr Plunket was going to be relieved if his talk radio duties. Until he didn’t show up yesterday for his regular slot without explanation and apparently isn’t taking questions.

My prediction: the nonsense BSA findings of late last year, the unfortunate incident with mr Banks, and the ease of which Mr Peter’s arguably risky discussions about vaccines could be turned into anti-vaxxer controversy will see manic talk ditch its current model within the next 6 months and try to move a bit more to the left, probably through a re-brand. Mediaworks are scared. It’ll probably be blamed on ratings being too low.

Mark my words, it’s too risky to air anything but the party line for the MSM these days.

In my opinion, at least 50% of the people in the USA want a government with conservative policies. They don’t wish to cancel others who might want something different. It looks very ominous there. I believe less than 20% of NZ wants the cancel culture, open border, world reset way, that we are headed. Most are completely oblivious to it. How do we go about stopping it?     The thing is he had a following. And many of these people will turn off and never tune to this station again.

So, if it was under Luxon’s tenure, why do the Greens think it would cross Luxon’s desk?

It was through a third party contract that work was done on two engines and one power turbine module on vessels that belong to the Royal Saudi Navy.
In Air New Zealand records, is the work undertaken listed as for the “third party” or further detailed as equipment belonging to the Royal Saudi Navy?

Who informed the Greens of this matter? – someone with political motivations rather than a person interested in correcting a mistake the company had made?

I am not an apologist for Saudi Arabia. It is a despotic state in a region of despotic states, with Israel being the shining exception. But unless it is illegal, we should trade with them. Allowing Fonterra to export milk powder but being outraged at Air New Zealand exporting services is absurd.

Excellent piece by John Solomon who also writes for The Hill. The FBI has evidence that the Jan 6 Capitol attacks were pre-planned, including copies of their interactions on social media.

A dozen FBI affidavits supporting charges against the more than 200 defendants show rioters engaged in advance planning on social media sites. The planning included training, casing sites, identifying commanders on scene, and requests for donations of cash, as well as combat and communication gear.

More than a half dozen of the suspects are now charged with conspiracy to commit violence for actions predating the Jan. 6 riots. The early actions identified in court documents date back to November, with planning and rhetoric accelerating after Christmas, court records show.

To add to that, former Chief of Capitol Police Steven Sund has sent an 8 page letter to Pelosi and other lawmakers. In the letter he details asking the Sargents-At-Arms for both Pelosi and McConnell for help days before Nov 6 from the National Guard. He was denied.

He also details his confrontation with the protesters who weren’t protesters, but heavily organized militia.

When the group arrived at the perimeter, they did not act like any group of protestors I had ever seen. Unlike other heated protests, these protesters did not simply congregate to angrily voice their grievances. As soon as this group arrived at our perimeter, they immediately began to fight violently with the officers and to tear apart the steel crowd control barriers, using them to assault the officers. It was immediately clear that their primary goal was to defeat our perimeter as quickly as possible and to get past the police line. This mob was like nothing I have seen in my law enforcement career. The group consisted of thousands of well-coordinated, well-equipped violent criminals. They had weapons, chemical munitions, protective equipment, explosives, and climbing gear. A number of them were wearing radio ear pieces indicating a high level of coordination.

  That will really freeze decision making. All the argy-bargy to come about the application of the news laws, their implications and what accommodations are required. Local authorities will be pleased to find their power being usurped. They will have nothing to do.
  Net effect another 3 years of nothin’ doing. Forget about building infrastructure we are going to first have to decide how to feed the voracious taniwha.
  Couldn’t we please have a govt with at least a modest dose of ability. This is one is taking us into a wage/price inflationary spiral and sits around talking all day.

    Good job. Now let’s hope the French infect other countries. The cancer of wokeness is quite terrifying as it spreads into all areas of our lives. I’m pretty sure that it has gathered momentum because younger generations than mine have never been disciplined, never allowed to fail, spoilt rotten by indulgent parents who wanted to be their kids friend and not their parent. These now adult brats have never been challenged or allowed to feel bad about anything. They just can’t take any kind of criticism.   I recently had the pleasure of watching the just finished England v India 1st cricket test. Not on Spark, not on Sky, but on Channel 4 UK Freeview tv.
  Pleasure not just for the excellent sport displayed (though the Indians may not agree!), but also
  – it was free-to-air in the UK
  – it was live and in HD
  – there were restrained advertising breaks (as opposed to the NZ relentless and repetitious ads at every instant a wicket falls or an over ends)
  – excellent expert commentary and comments (comments mainly by Sir Alister Cook)
  
  NZ Cricket should take note (ha ha), the Ch 4 audience in the UK was over a million each day, even though it was starting around 6 am their time. A quality product attracts an audience naturally.
  
  Those interested, look for subscription models for British TV Club’s online. I pay ~$12 pm to subscribe to access to view the approx 50 FreeView channels, some HD, including BBC and ITV, and the only disadvantage is you have to watch live, no recording or time-shifting permitted.
