      Bad year for fruit and tomato crops in this part of the country too. Too cold……So, it’s colder here, colder in Europe and colder in the United States. But, it’s getting hotter at the same time.
      
      Nasa says that the sun is starting to go through a cooling period, after going through a period of being hotter than nornal and during that hotter period the earth was also hotter.

        Many actual scientists have predicted we are entering a long term cooling phase based on solar history, spots and minima. Those who have their heads in the Green umbra have missed the likelihood of that.
        
        The global warming may be an irrelevancy, like the Chinese investigating the Wuhan Lab on behalf of their WHO satellite.

      Im picking a blastery winter with plenty of unsettled weather, Mildish with the occasional S’lys coming through.
      La Nina will keep Westerlies further South than Normal but will result in a lot of unsettled wx. More Nth Island and plenty of rain. Definately no droought in Nth Island but plenty flash floods.etc
      
      Wly’s normally kick in near equinoxes but will be delayed to later.
      Heard it from me first.
      Simple meteorology and physics.

      Yes, but they talk about Climate Change meaning the humans are doing it and lumping pollution into it, when in fact the climate has always changed and always will and has done so long before the industrial revolution. We could be so clever as to change the climate!! It’s to do with the solar system.
      
      Having said that we should certainly change our behaviour with regard to pollution of our rivers, sea etc but that has nothing to do with the changing climate.

What is the general consensus of wearing hats – including a cowboy hat – in and around Parliament? No BS about it being “cultural” because it isn’t. Acceptable or not?

    Many years ago one of my kids did a primary school visit with his class to a Porirua school and on the bus they were told that wearing their caps inside was “culturally insensitive” so were to put them in their school bags until break time.
    
    However, when they walked into the classroom the vast majority of the local kids were wearing caps and to top it off, come break time, a large number of our kids caps were gone along with their lunches.
    
    I think wearing a hat inside is impolite but so is most of what the current maori party do and the crap starts at the top.

        Unity: the issue of hat wearing in parliament was raised some years ago regarding Dover Samuels’ habit of wearing one despite the very long standing convention that men dont wear hats inside. Just for Dover, Standing Orders were amended so that hats are now permitted to be worn in the House. Therefore the man with the face scribble is in fact in compliance with Standing Orders

        David, if the speaker of the house wasn’t humming the Labour Govt’s hymn sheet (give Maori everything they want) in the back of his head permanently, he would change the rules about wearing hats in Parliament. He changed to rules quick enough to enable the cessation of wearing Neck Ties because a Maori MP took the piss out of the mandated requirement.
        IMO, Mallard is well past his use-by date and must go!

  It used to be considered “good manners” to remove a hat when indoors – especially someone else’s indoors.
  But good manners are subjective and don’t count for much any more.
  I don’t care about this guy wearing a hat – probably it will turn out to be his major “look at me” accomplishment.
  Also, if he is made to take it off, then everyone else will have to remove hat-like head coverings.
  Any hijab wearers in Parliament?

but somehow Miracles happen and a space in MIQ opened for Him and his partner in January, just as he was wanted to leave Mexico.

  This raises far more questions than answers,
  1. returning home, Well if a MP dont you think you would call NZ home not mexico.
  2. Step mother ill . Not Immediate family, Whats criteria for “family” in MIQ , MBIE.
  3. The emergency was over once he arrived in Mexico,
  4. No immediate emergency to get home.
  5. How he obtained a visitor visa for “boy frient” in June.
  6.How come they both get MIQ voucher when fully booked at short notice.
  7. Who is looking after step mother now his Boyfriend is not caring for them.
  8How come non NZ can travel here under partnership during COvid.
  
  As for me, Still of the coast of Myanmar and no chance of getting a MIQ voucher and returning to my Immediate family at home.

      I’m not defending his politics but his basic rights to travel within the law. He does have a higher position than most as an MP and will be expected to vote when in the house. I don’t see it as unreasonable to help him get back.
      
      Our MP’s are treated a bit brutishly (even I open the barrels for incompetence) but they are at the public’s beck and call and I class them as the highest paid social workers in NZ. Even list MP’s get the public chasing them around relentlessly for help.
      Perhaps I’m not woke.

  On that note, how many KBers, or indeed anyone, has checked into a 4- or 5-star hotel for a 2-week stay and been told “No, don’t pay anything now, we’ll send you an invoice”?
  
  This incredibly dead-set useless gummint has decided that rather than people paying in advance, or at the very latest on arrival, they’d merely send out invoices and everyone would pay!
  
  In what must have come as an incredible surprise to these intellectual giants, fewer than 2,000 of the 7,273 invoices had to date been paid, and 494 invoices are overdue by more than 3 months.
  
  You couldn’t make this up.

    The MBIE are incompetent, may explain all the overdues.
    On arrival on 7th October I filled in a declaration I would staying home more than 90 days.
    28 days after I was let out I got sn invoice. Pay within 90 days. 11th Feb.
    
    I emailed saying i filled out the form and therefore was exempt. Got a standard reply. Fill out effing form again!!
    
    In mid Janery I got a reminder invoice.
    I replied saying my 90 days was up on 5th January hello I am still here please credit.
    Fill in the form was stern reply.
    On tuesday I sent in the effing form email…
    Today I get another form letter saying. It appears you qualify for no charge.!!! No shit sherlock.
    They advise it will be a few days for the credit which they will post!!!!!!!
    
    I am sure I will be on their unpaid/overdue list.
    
    All in all I am totally unimpressed with the covid systems(I only have 30 years experience designing and implementing business systems.
    An effing 16 year old could have whipped up a better system over a weekend.
    But then I guess he wouldnt have had interference from wallies in Government insisting on inserting stupidity.
    Yes I have delt with Government bods designing systems. They are generally designed by useless committees who dont have an effing clue.

I had a read of the Politik article on the RMA this morning. The article says that the proposed RMA changes will reference the Maori version of the Treaty of Waitangi that gives Iwi sovereignty. These proposed RMA changes already detail an ideological transfer of power away from the regions to Central Government and Iwi. The Government are talking up the housing crisis but their RMA changes are really about a different agenda.

  Can you have two “sovereigns”? Can you sign up to the sovereignty of the Queen of the parliament and yet retain your own sovereignty or that of your iwi or tribe?
  
  I do not understand how the Maori version of the Treaty works because there seems to be a basic contradiction. Maori wanted the protection of the sovereign – they requested it – and signed up for it but now they are saying we want our own sovereignty. Honour the treaty…. but which part?

    Tomtoddy, this is from Stuffed this morning. It’s full of Maori words and terms which made my eyes glaze over, but I was intrigued by the comment that “all Maori signed the Maori version because it was in te reo”. That was in 1840.
    Really? How many Maori could even read te reo back then as the written form didn’t exist till Europeans created it. And it was still very much a work in progress at the time the treaty was signed.

      Exactly, the term used in the Te Reo version was Nu Tirani. = New Zealand.
      This was the translation from Hobson’s word by missionary Henry Williams, who was quite aware of the language, its nuances, having been living and preaching amongst Maori.
      These are the words for New Zealand, in Maori, used and carried across the country and different tribal rohe…..
      Early writings/records on Maori enounters called them New Zealanders, although the Maori came up with Tangata Moari (normal people) as a word for themselves AFTER their experience of Pakeha require a differential beyond tribal identity only. Similarily, a collective name for seperate islands, or even a concept of nationhood or larger national identity; didn’t exist.
      
      Kind of funny that it is probably Pakeha in the 21t century who are pushing the myth onto modern Maori that Aotearoa was a Maori word for the collective NZ landmass.
      LOLZ.

    That’s just a fundamental problem with the Treaty of Waitangi – it’s pretty clear that both sides had very different ideas about what was being agreed to.
    
    Part of the issue is in the translation. Two key Maori language terms used were kāwanatanga (governorship) and rangatiratanga (chieftainship). Both were relatively new additions to the Maori language, and were not well defined. Exactly what rights and authority kawanatanga and rangatiratanga had, and which was the higher authority, would have been unclear.
    
    But even leaving aside this wrinkle, the English language version of the text differs from the Maori version. The Maori version says the chiefs would retain their rangatiratanga (chieftanship, however that is defined). The English language version merely says the chiefs would retain all their land and possessions; there is no mention of the chiefs retaining any form of authority (whether subordinate to the Crown or otherwise).
    
    Some people claim the principle of Contra proferentem means that we should ignore the English version of the treaty and treat the Maori version as valid. But the problem with this argument is that it doesn’t solve the issue of the key terms kāwanatanga and rangatiratanga being extremely ambiguous. And there is a principle in contract law that when contracts are ambiguous enough to be interpreted in multiple ways, they become unenforceable. To my view that applies here.

    The Maori version is the only one that counts. Maori gave up their sovereignty so as to come under Queen Victoria’s umbrella and guaranteed the same rights as everyone else. Can anyone imagine two different sovereignties in a country. It would be impossible. Maori also confirmed they understood that Queen Victoria was the sovereign of our country at the Kohimarama Conference 20 years later when many chiefs individually stood up and re-confirmed their allegiance to her. Anything else is made up history and should be utterly discounted.
    
    If you want to know what the Maori version says you just need to read the final English draft dated a day later than the earlier English draft (wrongly) in legislation. It has been hidden in the Archives. The earlier draft in legislation mentions Forests and Fisheries and omits “and all New Zealanders” whereas the final English draft omits Forests and Fisheries but mentions ‘and all New Zealanders.

The rise and rise of the Asian population may lead in time to the formation of ethnic political parties that may get enough votes to hold seats in the House and be required to form a Government.
This may lead to the a curtailment of the ever increasing demands of the Special People and their supporters as Asian parties have bigger fish to fry for their people.
It may also lead to a rolling back of the Special Peoples influence as these parties and their supporters reject the current ideology around the Special People.
In addition The Treaty signing is becoming more of a history now nearly two centuries ago.
Asian people and their Parties may decide to look to the future not to the past where the facts are disputed and the relevance is diminishing.

Ok, I shall never be quiet for a sexist culture whilst they are doing welcomes or Karakia, my European culture says women go first,you stand for women and they will not be at the back for entrance on to Marae.

People I know ,who are the very description of tolerance are just over it.
My Brother who is married to a local Maori girl,worked his whole life for the local Iwi is just disgusted at the attitude that his organisation has for the wider community,
In his own words”they do nothing without a payout”.
He will finish working for them on the last day of May this year, 43 years.He is simply over the expectant culture and his children are thankfully overseas as they wont be tarnished with the new Maori way as one Elder calls it.

  As I understand it, karakia are Maori incantations and prayers, used to invoke spiritual guidance and protection and to ensure a favourable outcome to important events and undertakings such as tangihanga (the ritual of farewell to our deceased), hui (meetings), and so on.
  
  I think it is now perfectly reasonable for ANYBODY who is uncomfortable with any aspect of this to refuse to participate in any way with karakia. Christians and atheists alike could well consider that having to participate in a karakia is akin to “bowing our heads to Maori power”.

Both are people who didn’t make a full time job out of the arts and now have their opinions elevated to top journalists commentators in our nationally funded media. How many of our jounralist/commentators have dual careers as business person, entrepreneur, a tradie, a truck driver, a programmer, a builder, a farmer, or a retired person.         I see Karl Du Fresne’s other article is about a man who was approached by Police and told to cover his digger because they had received complaints that the message on it was racist. The message said All Lives Matter. Equal rights for Kiwi Whites.
        My questions are:
        Question 1: If is illegal and must be covered why is stuff allowed to put the image of the digger and the full message in it’s article. Is the message banned or not?
        Furthermore Stuff isn’t just repeating the message it’s profiting off the message and racial division and being deliberately provocative with a much wider reach than digger man.
        Question 2. If they police are now visiting people with racially provocative messages, then what about “Black Power” or the Nazi Swastikas worn by Mongrel Mob. Are the police going to pay them a visit.

    I heard a few minutes of Marcus Lush last night when he went into a full & hysteric rant mode when a listener commented about the significance of wearing ties in the House.
    The caller was speaking reasonably, but was shouted down, with Lush shouting that he had been listening to this rubbish every night for the past 3 months and was sick of it. I was reminded of Sean Plunket when he occasionally lost the plot.
    I have noticed that Marcus Lush has also developed a fine line in passive/aggressive ‘discussion’ with callers who challenge his opinions and put him on the back foot.
    He is becoming a liability to the Newstalk image.
    Thank goodness for congenial blokes like Miles Davies who unfailingly leave one in a happy state of mind.

Singapore with over 111,000 Covid-19 infections, has had only 1 death and 20 people in the ICU. This is seen largely as a success of their contact tracing and mass testing which has in turn uncovered the huge numbers of people who were asymptomatic and better able to keep those at risk safe. This included mandatory testing for anyone who was a close contact of anyone who tested positive, even if they showed no symptoms. This all despite having a large migrant community.

The Government has been told it must do a much better job of telling the public how it is spending billions of dollars battling the pandemic.
Auditor General John Ryan wants more details on how much is being spent on COVID-19 response and where the money is going , Treasury figures show of the $60 billion put aside , more than $15 billion has gone on the wage subsidy and small business loan schemes , but Ryan said in a media release that it was difficult to know how much COVID-19 funding has been allocated to specific initiatives or total amount so far.

  I’d really like to know, as a taxpayer, where the $900,000,000 that Jacinda Ardern gave to “Maori for Covid” went? Nothing more was heard about that in the media. What exactly was all that taxpayer’s money spent on? Whose bank account was that deposited into? This has always been a mystery to me. He waited for the last day Parliament was sitting to make public his dreadful mistake and issue an apology, on the same day that the Royal Commission into the mosque shootings delivered its report and knowing Ardern had finished her round for media interviews for the year …

I was the only journalist to seek out the aggrieved man to hear his side of the story. Others it seems were too timid, presumably afraid of being labelled themselves for protecting and defending a rapist, as I was on many occasions …

This has been the shabbiest episode of inequality that I’ve experienced since starting work at Parliament before Jacinda Ardern was born.

If this is the Prime Minister’s view of being kind and caring for the wellbeing of others, I’m most certainly not on the team five million to whom she so frequently refers.

  Last week Mallard was reported to be enforcing the ‘ties’ rule as at the end of last year he had polled Mp’s and the majority had voted to keep them (the status quo). Now, after a Select Committee vote, they are no longer required. Presumably this Select Committee has a majority of Labour reps., who have now ‘democratically’ with a minority vote overruled the previous democratic decision of the majority. Yet more contempt for Parliament by this man who becomes more detestable by the day.

I live near a few of Governor Grey and another dedicated to “Europeans who died in battle”, which I’m happy to report are almost always covered in red paint. The blood colour is certainly an improvement on the benighted bronze.

On a few occasions we head over to Mt Roskill to the Indian Supermarket. There we stock up on the fresh herbs & spices, Gulab Jamun, and home made Naan – the sort of stuff you can’t get at New World.

What we do find worrying when we drive around, is the number of Green Wheelie Bins that are left out on the footpaths for days on end, long after the council has emptied the rubbish.
There are hundreds of them scattered everywhere. One property alone had about 30 outside! What on earth do people do with their waste in the mean time?

Has anyone else noticed how bad this has become in some neighborhoods?

An excellent editorial in the Herald this morning, accusing Trevor Mallard of hiding behind the necktie issue to deflect attention away from the Opposition having lost confidence in him.

The editorial ends thus:

Once again, it’s unlikely Mallard has contrived the dress code dust-up to divert attention, but perception is a big part of politics, and he knows this. Coverage of the first few days in Parliament this week was big on Waititi and his neckwear and little of Mallard. The Speaker may well have been relieved, if not happy, with the results of day one, in particular.

But it doesn’t disguise that Mallard’s situation remains an impediment to the second term of Government for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

National leader Judith Collins has said her party plans to raise repeated motions of no confidence in him as the year rolls on. “It’s this week, and it will be next week, and some weeks to come,” she told media.

On this, Collins is correct. His actions over the rape allegation raise too many questions about the judgment of a man charged with holding New Zealand’s third most important office, constitutionally, after the Governor-General and the Prime Minister.

As political reporter Claire Trevett pointed out this week, National’s chances of success appear unlikely, but that is not the point.

For a government needing acute focus on recovery from a pandemic and a stated desire for transformation, continuing in the role is untenable. It is time for the Prime Minister to prise loose Mallard’s hold on the position.

Of course, we all know that the PM won’t do that. So she needs to be ready, every time she exhorts us to “Be kind”, that her kindness does not extend to the man whose career was ruined by Trevor Mallard’s bullying. #MallardMustG0

    John Key said Labour care more about rapists and murderers than their victims (with plenty of justification).
    All those politicians leaving in protest on behalf of victims of rape made no sense to me. They were protesting calling them out on behalf victims of rape that they felt would have been offended for them. It’ utterly insane thinking and makes absolutely no sense unless you take the utterly offensive belief that victims of abuse etc are owned by the Left and therefore any accusations against the Left is also an insult against the victims.     Vodafone were great when their call centre was in Egypt, once they moved to Queen Street they were always outside smoking instead of answering calls according to a friend who worked in the neighbouring building.

My sense is that short term rentals say of less than 2 years are the norm in my neck of the woods (Rural Rodney).

So how many ST renters will never bother even dreaming of “doing a do up”?

How realistic then is Brenda our renter if located in these locales … and in NZ generally?

Anyone know the stats please?

  Well said BeaB – and in addition to Chinese consumer products, whiteware, clothing made in Asian sweatshops, using phones made with minerals mined in dangerous conditions by children etc etc etc.
  
  I just don’t understand the logic being applied here. Are the Greens now wanting us to stop trading with any country who commits acts we disagree with?

Brian Kemp and other officials.

Heard of a Husband and Wife Landlords with two rental properties, one in Tauranga and one in Taupo.
He has given notice to Taupo renters as returning to Taupo house from Tauranga, and she has given notice to Tauranga renters that she is returning to Tauranga from Taupo
Will decide what to do once both vacant.
Can’t go on cruise as has been cancelled by Labour.

For Rockingham District 7 NH House Race in Windham. The Dominion machine counted results cut almost exactly 300 votes from each of all 4 Republicans on the ballot, but by almost exactly 300 votes, added 100 to the top democrat and cut 20 for the other 3 Democrats. Overall Dominion machines swung the result by about 8% towards Democrats compared to hand recount.

But nothing suspicious going on right? Those Dominion machines are totally trustworthy and there is no possibility of fraud or results being tampered with.
