    Where is the Auditor General in this? How can HM Opposition have any say or presentation to the people when the media take up arms against them? The State Owned media are among the worst! They surely have a duty to be neutral and be seen to be that way–I find them unwatchable.

      Agree Kevin. I just heard on the radio that Faafoi has stated that TV1 will become advertisement free and Govt. funded. It was also reported his reason for this was to enable better journalism without having to rely on advertisers for funding.
      
      It looks like he is staying with the plot as first discovered when Claire Curran was having clandestine meetings with her best friend in the media and had to forfeit the Minister of Broadcasting portfolio because she did a Cindy and lied about it.
      
      Frankly, I see this as the start of Govt. takeover and control of all media. It will be Cindy’s way of delivering Communist doctrine to the masses.

  In our county of Solothurn in Switzerland, 2,662 deaths have been reported for 2020[5], among which 219 were attributed to covid-19 and of these 211 were living in nursing homes[6]. Median age of covid-19 death in Switzerland is 86 years old[7], and the rate of significant premorbidities is very high (97% with at least one premorbidity).
  
  Switzerland, in spite of a clear-cut “second wave”, has experienced no excess mortality for ages below 65, and even for 70 and above, a correction for the increasing size of this old age group shows no excess mortality for 2020[4], and a lower mortality in 2020 than in 2012, 2013 and 20156. Finally, for the whole swiss population, the total death rate per 100,000 inhabitants was the same in 2003 and even higher in 2000[8].
  
  Where do we find, here and around the world, any motivation and necessity to limit the professional and social activities of a whole population for now almost a year?
  
  Should we have locked populations in the past during former flu epidemics? Obviously no.

  I have a family member who works in/with machinery in a large, rural-based workplace.
  She and many of her colleagues listen regularly to daytime radio – that being Magic talk.
  But no more.
  When Banks and Plunkett were moved on, they decided to boycott Magic talk.
  But of course, nobody cares about what the likes of them in productive-based industry think, eh.

And as for Australia. The President has decided after the Transition it will form part of the Southern Province. It will be governed from the renamed Eastern Islands by a Committee of Maori people.
The President has decided Comrade Davidson will be an excellent Chairman.

    All you have to be is well connected and have a celebrity endorsed international profile.
    Capability doesn’t come into it.
    Plenty of people here voted for her because of magazine covers, media adulation and left wing credentials promoted by unions and academics.
    She had no policies – just a few announcements and handwringing about poverty, inequality and the need to divide society here.

Like him or- as most of us KBloggers- loathe him Winston Peters provided a hand break on the more dangerous policies of the last government. Now that he is gone there is no one to block the excesses of a government determined to introduce divisive race based policies and to drive us further apart rather than unify us as one nation. I see no desire on the part of National of even ACT to step up to the mark. I am beginning to despair. Muriel Newman: can’t you get back into the political fray again rather than just speaking good sense from the sidelines!

You cannot disclaim the fact that, were he still to be a member of that government in 2021, he would never have allowed Mahuta to introduce her legislation to outlaw petitions on Maori wards.

There’s an interesting article in Politico about Nikki Haley, her inevitable candidacy for President in 2024 and her relationship with Donald Trump.

“She took a breath. “Fast forward, I’m watching the television the morning of the 6th and I see Don Junior get up there,” she said, reciting the president’s son’s calls to action against Republican leaders, closing her eyes as if reimagining the scene. “And then I hear the president get up there and go off on Pence. I literally was so triggered, I had to turn it off. I mean, Jon [Lerner] texted me something and I said, ‘I can’t. I can’t watch it. I can’t watch it,’ because I felt the same thing. Somebody is going to hear that, and bad things will happen.”

I asked Haley whether she has spoken to Trump since January 6. She shook her head.

“When I tell you I’m angry, it’s an understatement,” Haley hissed, leaning forward as she spoke. “Mike has been nothing but loyal to that man. He’s been nothing but a good friend of that man. … I am so disappointed in the fact that [despite] the loyalty and friendship he had with Mike Pence, that he would do that to him.     It can’t be let go. The allegation of the blatant theft of the election still lurks and the Dems are hiding behind the military in Washington still because of it. They know what they did and it is haunting them. The game is afoot.
    
    Did China really launch a cyber attack on election night that transferred millions of votes to Biden? Massive logs show the foreign attackers with details of time, place, right down to the actual physical computer “mac” address. The same full details of the relevant strikes against the USA computers are also given showing the votes claimed to be transferred to Biden by each strike to each computer . Thousands of lines, one for each attack. This needs rebuttal or an answer.
    The data is supposed to have come from an operation set up by USA Security in anticipation. USA Operatives reportedly used the method themselves in external operations. The voting machines have obliging features built in to encourage the desired election outcome.

Is this the height of apology demands?

A Stuff article about brutality more than a century ago against the indigenous people of Patagonia by settlers, some of whom had been in, or had come from New Zealand, raises the possibility of an apology by New Zealand, then concedes there is no “clear cut case” for one.

Charlie Mitchell writes in the article:

There is no evidence the New Zealand government supported, condoned, or even knew about the events in Tierra Del Fuego.
It makes the matter of rectification unclear: There was no clear-cut case for an apology by the Crown, given the crimes were committed by private individuals.

FFS Charlie, we aren’t responsible for Patagonia.

Charlie summons up comment from one of our Kiwiblog posters: Scott Hamilton, a sociologist, and sometimes a resident of the cancel culture camp (he wanted the name of an Akaroa restaurant changed from that of a Pacific pirate).

Scott is a popular figure on the Woke Left. The Leftist blog, The Spinoff, has described Scott as “the author of two great modern works of sociology and place.”

Scott has fairly sharp views on colonialism’s effect on Maori, and with his interest across the whole Pacific would be likely source of a quote on the evils of colonialism.

The great English poet Geoffrey Hill, for example, called the devastation caused by the War of the Roses a ‘Holocaust’. Holocaust seems a reasonable description for the devastation – invasion, land theft, steep demographic decline – Maori suffered in the 19th C.

In another Tweet Hamilton defended the idea that genocide of Maori was attempted in New Zealand.

  Not having been present at the events of which you speak (and if I was I would have done my utmost to prevent them), I can only look objectively at what else was happening around the same place at around the same time and conclude this sort of activity, repugnant as it is to our modern tastes, was quite widespread. Common even. Somewhat banal, some might say. Especially as this had been going on in Aotearoa for centuries before Europeans arrived.
  
  I mean, Te Rauparaha was determined to wipe out all who opposed him, Ngapuhi’s raids of invasion, murder and enslavement were legendary, the holocaust perpetuated on the Moriori on the Chathams fits the bill, among many, many other similar events.
  
  I am at a genuine loss as to know why Stuff, the august organ that it is, seems determined to highlight the misdeeds of only one side in this orgy of violence, enslavement and even cannibalism going on at this time.
  
  Perhaps there is something I am missing here. Or perhaps not, and Stuff will be along very shortly with piece after piece after piece, month after month, of Maori misdeeds; doing everything they can to saturate modern Maori in the disgraceful murderous, rapine and genocidal excesses of their forebears.

        The Cameron family were still in Argentina around 1990 as we as a group stayed with them at Estancia Maori in the Mar de Plata region. It was a farming tour and we had a couple of days with them. Got the full history from there back through to NZ.

    I’m sure there were regular runs by sailing ship from Dunedin to Tierra del Fuego across the roaring 40’s and below. With a cargo of man-eating sheep (fed up with a grass only diet) it would have been tricky.       Not well-appreciated is that Tainui responded to a call to protect Auckland from a Ngapuhi attack. And were later rewarded by being told their lands were being taken, starting with those in Manukau.
      Governer Grey in an upcoming doco is described as an opiate addict who was finally seen by Tainui as tricky or 2 faced. Less trustworthy than its enemy Ngapuhi it prevails.
      Scott’s reasoning re holocaust was no doubt fed by women being raped, mothers and babies being shot after the abandonment of Pa built at Rangiririri. One such woman who escaped, Wikitoria, was renamed to reflect the horror she had seen and she survived.
      Added to that would be the killing of Maori women and children in an area agreed to be for non-combatants, some were burnt alive in a Church by the troops after seeing some of those that left before them were shot.
      The dope addled Grey seems easy to have avoided Auckland being attacked from the North and South because of differences between the tribes, and also from behind when marching South to join the gunships with their own cannon ready to bombard the Maori fortifications at Rangiriri.
      Those comforted by the results of tribal war in the past to overlook the treachery and savagery of the British have missed the bus, again. Including the fact, it was British ships that took the Taranaki tribes to the Chathams.
      The doco is very clear that the Wars are not over and never were, just restyled for survival over a much longer game.
      This will I suppose be part of the new history that is taught, the history “whitewashed,” and perhaps symbolised by the memorial at Rangiriri where all the British killed by soldiers are buried individually with names recorded while dead Maori are buried in a single grave.
      No wonder that Hamilton’s statute of Naval Captain Hamilton was recently removed.

        Absolute fantasy, and slander. The pa was not abandnoned. It was a line of trench, with a central redoubt, and over the Maori defenders surrendered the morning after a prolong assault the day before. This was no a living pa with ‘babies’ in it, it was a purpose built fortification.
        My Lord, you are speaking some rubbish.
        If women were shot, like is suggested by some, when swimming over the lake which flanked the defences, the note that contemporary accounts which noted women casualties in a later battle expressed regret, and said that the women in that case had their hair cut short.
        So what does a bobbing head, swimming from a battlesite look like at say, 200, 400 or 600 yards?
        Read some actual history and don’t repeat falsehoods and distortion.
        The prisoners taken at Rangiriri were eventually housed on Kawau Island, and escaped one night, and were not molested when they said they didnt intend to return.
        These are the facts. Do some research into the detail.
        
        The myth of the church burning at Rangioawhia is ludicruous, and demonstratably false. Some defended whare were burnt, but it seems likely that the defenders or the soldiers outside set the fire by muskets firing in and out. (This is why blackpowder needs special permits to hunt in Doc land, I have seen a musket spark held in a punga in the bush from a single barrel).
        There were 2 churches at Rangioawhia. The Anglican one is still there today, and in use. The Catholic mission never flourish there and it was dismantled in 1931.
        There are photos of the missing church, and even paintings after the fighting showing both churches present and troops in a redoubt (later the rural school, and now a community hall premises).
        Visit the sites, read. These are facts.
        There was even a Bishop who was unattached, but was present with the British forces, and his account he scolding returning soldiers for looted pigs, and one of the soldiers had a pieces of headgear from the Catholic church on a donkey which angered him.
        The wounded Maori were treated in the same facilities as the troops. You can see the site today, in Te Awamutu, and even graves.
        There was no good reason to remove the Captain Hamilton statue either. There is nothing in the character of the man, or they way he died, to justify the unhinged comments of a local loud-mouthed kumatua. He died leading soldiers and sailors in battle, but the Battle of Gate pa is not a story of anything more than a British defeat, and one where both sides conducted themselves with humanity – it is famous for Col. Booth having water brought to him when mortally wounded in the Maori trenches.
        A lot of the worst stories I hear these days are demonstrably false or else very dubious.
        People have a lot of emotion, and seem to lose their heads. Certain historians are playing up to this, and getting more attention than they should. Shameful.
        The true history is not ‘Goodies and Baddies’.
        Do not spread lies, invention and inflammatory myths, or pretend the hearsay you are sharing here is NZ history.

        In your 6.31 post, you say of the brig the Taranaki Maori hijacked for the invasion of the Chathams: “It’s not like they didn’t do any gun-running or trading.”
        
        I’m sure they did trade with Maori. Why else would they be over from Australia before the 1840 Treaty?
        
        As for gun running: if they were doing this, and you offer no evidence of that, perhaps they had already sold any muskets they had aboard. If they had guns they might have put up a fight against the hijackers.

    All adventurers made a fortune out of wool farming and some fascinating characters and books wriiten.
    These were modern day adventurers and made Argentina one of the richest in the World , All by working the land.
    Fascinating place, torres del payne, Ushauia, No place for fools.
    I think one such legent was a settle called Jimmy, ( really cant remember name of book, But fascinating in its insight to how tough life was).
    On another note, RMM would of lasted 2 days down there.

  Look closely and you will also find non stainless screws and or bolts/nuts in the BBQ and there is a spray which provide some protection, probably best not to use the stuff from the Chinese shop of which you are so fond 😉

      I am aware that the iron tools used leave micro deposits but the “stainless” is just crap whereas well plated galvanised products last years.

  Technically 400 grade steels can be called stainless as they are over 12% chrome. This is what many knives, exhaust pipes and the like are made from. It rusts after a while. It is magnetic while the 300 series are non magnetic. And in sea air, many 300 series including 316, can corrode, especially if attached to a different material so the salty water acts as a battery. Crevice corrosion is a real issue. You can also get corrosion near welds if not done properly.

More details about the strange death of officer Brian Sicknick on Jan 6. It’s almost like reporting of his “death” was preempted by media and became a self fulfilling prophecy. It turned out after all the media reports said he had been killed during the “riot” with a fire extinguisher, he was actually home and fine according to his brother Ken who he had exchanged texts with. The next thing you know, he experiences a random “stroke”, it is reported he is dead and his body is cremated immediately, with the autopsy not allowed to be released.

Reading between the lines of the government’s draft history curriculum the full extent of its revisionist ambitions soon become clear. Rather than the history of the colony-cum-nation-state that the world knows (pro-tem?) as New Zealand, the next generation of young New Zealanders will learn that the history of these islands actually began somewhere between a thousand and eight hundred years ago. In other words our national narrative must be understood as a Maori – not a Pakeha – story.

Indeed, the role assigned to the Pakeha in this narrative is almost entirely negative. At best, they might be described as disruptors. At worst, they will be painted as destroyers and appropriators: agents of an alien power that imposed its will unjustly on Aotearoa’s original inhabitants. If the history of this country is envisaged as a Hollywood western, then the Pakeha are wearing the black hats – they’re the baddies.

  I have noticed a trend in Hollywood in having a racially and gender diverse band of “good guys” but mostly white men as the “bad guys”. I remember when

I notice the media are starting to drip feed the bad news about the economy.
The fact that tourism is fighting for its life, not just the overseas tourists but the industry as a whole.
That the cost of the lockdown hasn’t gone away but is becoming front and central for many businesses.
The debt hasn’t gone away it has just been parked in a cul de sac for later decision making.
That many of the answers to short-term problems are going to be long-term.
Many businesses have made, or are going to make, chances the effect of which are not yet wholly known.
It wont happen… but it will happen.

  Contract work has slowed, payments have slowed, jobs are teetering on the line. A Do-Nothing govt cannot shake up an economy they do not understand. Workers are still isolating and now many have changed to working from home permanently. That’s exciting for basic trade–where’s our business, we can barely pay our staff, never mind our small reward. I can’t remember what it was called, and have no wish to cause others the pain I went through, but I sort-of accidentally caught the last 5 minutes of some execrable wanker on TV last evening who wrote and presented the most unimaginable bilge regarding Governor George Grey.

Evidently the Maaaaori were organised, peaceable, friendly, generous all-round good guys, all living in harmony and love before the evil settlers and the despicable Grey arrived. Grey was a war criminal don’t cha know?

It was supposed to be presented in a comic style but there was nothing funny about it, and not in the way the wanker that got funding for this intended. I’m mulling over a complaint to the BSA – I know it’ll be rejected but it might tie them up for 5 minutes so we’ll see.

The diversity campaign reaches boardrooms …

Republicans are fighting a move by Nasdaq, the No. 2 stock exchange in the United States, to require the 3,000 or so companies listed on it to include women, racial minorities and LGBT individuals on their boards.

The Wall Street Journal reports the 12 Republicans on the Senate’s Banking Committee have called on the Securities and Exchange Commission A(SEC) to reject Nasdaq’s proposal

The senators praised companies for efforts to “recruiting, promoting, and maintaining diverse talent,” but they said in a statement:

”“However, it is not the role of Nasdaq…to act as an arbitrator of social policy or force a prescriptive one-size-fits-all solution upon markets and investors.”

The senators argued that board members should be chosen on merit and ability to improve corporate performance, and that choosing them based on a “narrowly-defined concept of diversity” could undermine that goal.

Under Nasdaq’s proposal, listed companies would have to have at least one woman on their boards, in addition to a director who is a racial minority or one who self-identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer. Companies that filed to meet the standard would have to justify their position.

In a review last year, Nasdaq found that more than three-quarters of its companies wouldn’t have met the proposed requirements.

Nasdaq’s rival, the New York Stock Exchange, ithe world’s largest stock exchange, hasn’t proposed rules on board diversity.

  Perhaps the most central issue is there was no hearing in the House, no witnesses or evidence presented, and no record of the case from which to work. Essentially, the House Managers are scrambling all over the place and are making this up as they go along presenting a case based on feelings, anonymous sources, and articles from clearly biased news outlets that reflect inaccuracies. Moreover, they neglect the timeline in that the attack on the Capitol was actually transpiring as President Donald Trump was still on the stage giving his speech.
  
  The House Managers continue to pull things out of the hat which aren’t true and are at odds with their stated theory of the case.
  
  House Managers cases is akin to a house of cards described in the movie “My Cousin Vinny.” Their ‘evidence’ includes citing media articles that are unreliable and trial by innuendo and conjecture versus the actual facts. CG unit that I used to be active with has one a bit northwest of above area I referred, I was just really surprised how few greater AKL /gulf eastern coastal WS’s appeared on the MetS map when I took a quick look mid afternoon to see if the NE’ster was coming in and racing might actually be a possibility, particularly given the number of people down there having boats that use the inner gulf.

Green list MP Golriz Ghahraman seems to be the face of the challenge to Air New Zealand for doing business with the Saudi military.

Ghahraman is an ethnic-Iranian New Zealander. The Greens say she came to the country as a refugee.

Iran and Saudi-Arabia are the two players behind the war in Yemen.

On State TV tonight, in a brief interview with Ghahraman, the issue of Air NZ doing business with the Turkish military was also raised, and Turkey’s activities in war-torn Syria were mentioned.

Turkey and Iran are rivals in Syria, as the link below shows.

What is going on? Is Air New Zealand being hammered for doing business with countries with which we aren’t at war? If Turkey and Saudi Arabia, why not question trade with Iran, too?

New Zealand is a tiny trading nation that lives by its exports. If a minor and radical political party is able to wind up our State-fed media on this, where will trading bans be advocated next? Are the Melon Greens going to attack NZ trade with the United States? With Australia? With China?

In the meantime, if Saudi Arabia and Turkey are targets, why not Iran, too?

  Reading the Code of Conduct and there definately is a case for “Due Dilligence”.
  I think evryone is missing the important bits,

  NZ Government has a high moral ground in regards to conflicts and war zones and is a signatory to ICCPR ?
  Greens and Labour ( Im sure as well) have some loopy mission statements as to what they stand for.
  Are they not guilty by being in power. Own goal?
  FWIW Iran support the Houthi rebels mainly because of there natural enemies the Saudis.
  So, How can a “refugee” from Iran born in 80’s ( Already under Ayotolla since 1980 become a Refugee, Was her family siding with the Shah who got disposed off in 1979? And still living there before escaping? In which case you think she would have some anti Muslim sentiments running deep in her family?
  The issue I believe is the “perception” of dealing ill reputable governments in wars. You can through in Saudi and Turkey amongst most of Middlle East.
  Food and armaments are too different things.
  Like i said if you make a hand granade handle but didnt know it was for a granade, Then are you complicit.

  It boils down to anti corruption, Business ethics,Bribery,Political contributions,Keeping of records, sanctions. engaging an agent /consultant.

  Any alarm bells in the above list? Sure is.
  
  Who is custodian of these Policies?
  Question in my mind NZ as major shareholder which minister is responsible for there actions? Robinson?
  Sorry for rambling, but there must be a more astute person on here who can explain it more accurately than me.
  I think this may have further implications for Air NZ internationally than people realise.
