    The infection came in through the Government’s border controls. An airport worker is Patient Zero for this outbreak, but was working to normal procedures as the virus doesn’t last long on surfaces. (Quaranting of objects seems obvious to me – just hold them in a dry storeroom for 72 hours before washing them.)
    
    The Government then was slow to react to the outbreak (how can close contacts be unfindable for days on end when they eventually just knock on the door of their home to find them?) and eager to drop down Alert Levels as their pollsters found Covid Fatigue is occurring. Now they admit the spread is beyond their control with cases they are unaware of out there.
    
    You can expect L4 in Auckland from next week, L3 in the rest of the North Island and L2 in the rest of NZ. And its the Government’s fault.

Things must not so rosy in the Prime Ministers world after begging for property investors stop inflaming the property market, we see more lockdowns for Auckland at level three and a lesser level two for the rest of the Country. Now the word out there on the street is that the team of 5 million is falling apart and not obeying our Leader and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
After basing her Leadership on death and tragedy she now is crying out and blaming property Investors for her inability to cool the housing market and now showing what a one trick pony she is especially when it comes to Economics, Poverty, Immigration Housing and Health.
The rest of the world have had lockdowns because they could not control the Coronavirus and other variations New Zealand has had lockdowns to try to contain the virus and really you can only blame Jacinda Ardern for her own stupidity and inability to listen for the problems that are happening now.

  Perhaps a little more simply, how many Members of Parliament own a primary home, a holiday home and then investment properties beyond that, openly or buried in trusts, and should on some matters be declaring a conflict of interest and not acting or voting on certain issues.

    At it’s most simplest – how can you double the NZ population in the last 20yrs – yet in the last 12 months without immigration – they can’t house the last 20,000 families?
    
    There is clearly no property shortage but a vacancy shortage.
    
    Ban single dwellings from being investment properties — and watch a building boom take place, for sale or rent. People will knockdown and rebuild older homes, for two or more townhouses. Or renovate to include intergenerational living quarters. You’ll upgrade the nations housing stock. You’ll increase the nations population, and nation wide. You’ll use existing infrastructure and also then make it affordable to upgrade it.
    
    There would need to be involvement by far more architects – as it’s established individual section development.

      You would need to change the town planning rules. Plenty of sites that could be developed, but rules are single house only per 600sqm lot.
      Auckland should be a blanket 3 or 4 story allowance everywhere and then watch places get built. It will never happen due to the nimbys

  Good grief. What a twit. How many Government Ministers are property investors? My unfortunate experience with Labour and Green voters in Wellington, many of them party members is that they are enthusiastic little capitalists when it comes to property. I was invited to a social event attended by these people. Shortly after the 2017 election. Many of these folk were senior public servants, celebrating jacinda while boasting about their capital gains in property. It was sickening. I left. That experience confirmed my view that these left wing elites are amoral and hypocritical.

  Blaming investors is a cop-out.
  
  Remember the housing crisis ™ affects not only house prices but rent prices. That tells us it is not investors alone buying up all the property keeping people from buying houses but only renting, but that the overall demand for housing, owner occupied and rentals is high. The only exception to this is investors who buy houses and keep them empty, but there is no significant variation in the rate of this except for houses that can’t meet tenancy laws (which is a government problem).
  
  We have a proportionally increasing population driven by immigration (our birth rate is below replacement), multiple layers of government which is stacked against building houses, and a building industrial complex which makes it expensive to do the build. These are all government caused problems which have led to excessive demand and insufficient supply.
  
  Combine this with economic situations where credit is cheap, interest on low risk products is near zero, and stocks and business lending is risky, it makes perfect sense to buy a second house.
  
  That is the reason housing is expensive, not just “Greedy investors not being kind”.

      In fairness, this current bunch have exacerbated the problem very efficiently, about their only real success.
      
      The extra living allowance for students started the push, the push against landlords drove a few out of the market, forced upgrades to already liveable houses that some tenants will neither use nor maintain to reneging on their electoral promise to limit immigration to 30,000.
      
      Health and safety has gone mad with the ensuing increase in building costs, saw a job costing where scaffolding exceeded 50% of the total budget, plus printing an endless supply of money has made upgrading possible at a cost but not as bad as 5 years ago.

    If you can get $600 per week rental from your tenant, it services just over $1 million housing finance at 3% p.a.
    Why would investors not buy as many houses as they could at up to $1 million purchase price? It’s a free house!
    The rubber will meet the road, when tenants (ordinary NZ’ers) cannot pay the ever increasing rents, or worse still lose their jobs as small businesses fold, but still need housing. They will need to double the security presence outside WINZ (or whatever Maori name they call that dept now) offices.
    In housing (and also in Covid management), we are looking for solutions to the East, when the problems and the solutions are in the West.
    These people are idiots, without ears and without an exit strategy.

      Now factor in that the only part of the loan that you can offset against outgoings in the interest (that is now ring-fenced) not the principal and you’ll see that $600 doesn’t even begin to cover it

      This is a very real possibility. If for whatever reason the economy really falls apart, housing availability is unlikely to change as the demand will not change, people still need to live. The result would likely be a Venezuela-esque housing crisis, a real housing crisis where housing is so unaffordable there cramming 10-15 people into a house, mass living in cars or tents, etc. Not the OneNews stories like when Nats were in, on every street and in every park. It will be hell.

        The only way to make housing more affordable to those out of the market is to lower prices. The alternative is huge govt handouts to some but that’s unfair and not sustainable. If we lower prices by 50% most of the ‘investors’ are bankrupt. Fair enough, they knew the risks they were taking. There’s no such thing as a free lunch. The losers are those who’ve purchased their first home in the last 5 years or so. Massive negative equity amidst an economic catastrophe. Just awful. And yet we try and encourage youngsters into the market as if it’s risk free. Take a look at property prices offshore and tell me why we’re so different that our prices shouldn’t be comaprable.

A Kiwiblog comment yesterday evening –
… someone who was supposed to be in isolation went to work at KFC for 9 hours before testing positive. That was yesterday. And today they were expecting long lines of cars for people getting tested and pretty much no one showed up. I think people are getting complacent. The govt was probably [thinking], bugger it, we’re not having that.

The drop-off of testing may also coincide with the introduction of the terms “close contact” and “contact plus”.
Phil Twyford, referred to by several in the same post thread, with his announcements of announcements and changes in terms and targets, could not have done better to confuse the issue.

When potential disease spreaders see their GP for a test and then go to a gym, or work a shift at KFC while possibly infectious, and thereby display a level of intelligence that leaves certain doubt, why introduce terms like “close contact” and “contact plus”, demanding further understanding that the actions of some prove just may not be there.

    Is that the unstated object of these lock downs: to get them off the takeaways for a week?
    The price is very high. The PM talks of death of an individual but ignores the other damage being caused which may indirectly lead to long term illness and loss of businesses and other consequences.
    
    There is no “V” shaped recovery and wage subsidies don’t make up for all business discontinuity. Many businesses are just hanging on until their support network can’t go any further. If you are a regular cafe you have an income that likely supports all,with the owners often taking home less than staff. That is normal for many in commerce. Disturbances that mean cutting staff imply lack of customers and COVID is keeping them at home. That means survival is speculative.
    
    These stresses are across a very wide spectrum of business–even contracting, where competitive quotes reduce margins to make the future very uncertain.
    This present government govt has no idea of how the commercial sector, the power engine of New Zealand, works. Time to resign.

    Is it time for NZ to consider changing MP eligibility rules to something like Oz. NZ Labour MPs happily meddled in Aussie elections by providing birthplace information and almost created a national crisis by highlighting that Ozzie law to disqualify some sitting Ozzie MPs there.
    The rules would be you have to be a citizen. You don’t have to be born in NZ. Or alternatively you are a Permanent Resident of at least 10 years standing to prove your intentions of being a loyal long term NZ resident.
    
    I would also add to that, you do not get to vote if you have been overseas and been a permanent resident of a another country for over two years. You can get your voting rights back as soon as you return.

      That’s sensible. I suggest one of the alternate political parties ACT or National campaign on the to be enacted law that to vote in NZ, you must be registered and in order to be registered, you must be a New Zealand Citizen.
      
      Then again, why not go the whole hog and include in the law that in order to receive any taxpayer-funded welfare, unless aligned to a like law (reciprocated) in an aligned country, one must be a New Zealand Citizen.

Just shows how completely nutty and bonkers the world has become.
I think the greatest plane I have had seen fly several times in my life is the Spitfire, it was and is just a fantastic aeronautical wonder of its time.
Lucky for the west it turned WW2 in our favour.
Iran in the early 70’s was basically a western country with western ideals until the mullahs seized control and turned it medieval.
I love the attitude of Rita Panahi, she loves and embraces her adopted country.
As for Golriz Ghahraman, I and her like millions, have nothing in common.
I wouldn’t sell my soul to the UN to defend despotic murderers getting true justice, seeking asylum to then attempt to change the countries way of life and democracy.
She could always return to Iran and see if she can change that back from becoming a medieval shithole.
She won’t do that because she will get stoned in a hole by her country brethren.
People should be thankful for big breaks in life, this woman and I are poles apart on the meaning of freedom and along with it democracy.
She has proven she will sell her soul, and it continues….

What exactly do the Green MPs voted in on the list do? I recognize that many list MPs have connections to various electorate areas- for example National’s Jo Hayes did work on behalf of Christchurch East constituents as a list MP and no doubt folk like Gerry Brownlee continue to be active on behalf of the people in Ilam even though he is no longer their MP. But someone like Mr Menendez-March? What does he do to earn his salary? As a representative of the people yet with no electorate what does he do?

    In fairness to the Greens, their Parliamentary budget would be far smaller than Labour or National and so would be very limited in the number of ‘electorate’ offices they can provide. After all the extras given to Social Welfare beneficiaries over the last three and a half years Minister Camel Sepuloni still believes it is not enough so you have to ask the question how and where will they get the funds from to keep these people happy, will it be to borrow more in the name of COVID-19 and pile more on the youth of this Country that have to pay it back especially now as it is well past the $100 billion figure given over a month ago or will the Finance Minister and the Reserve Bank do a deal to have COVID-19 loans disappear.

  The greatest blight on Ms Ardern’s Labour-led Government is its failure to date to secure and apply adequate quantities of vaccines that could protect most New Zealanders against contracting Covid-19.
  
  Appropriate and effective mass-vaccination programmes should have commenced weeks ago. But it appears that Ms Ardern’s Government still lacks vaccines (let alone comprehensive plans) for such to occur. If lockdowns work , why are we back in lockdown?

Anyway consider why the whole of Auckland is locked down . It’s easier for the govt to run a couple of roadblocks for the whole city than to run perhaps dozens that would be required to lockdown a neighbourhood .

And that’s why govts the world over use draconian methods to ‘control” this Chinese plague , it’s easier to impose broad harsh measures on everyone than to use nuanced targetted measures .

It’s a bit like anti drink driving ; target everyone instead the usual suspects , who are very well known to Plod.

As with the previous Auckland lockdown to level 3, the question remains the same – why is the South Island (and in fact large portions of the North Island) also put on level 2? – if it is not only because Aucklanders can fly to such destinations without proper measures in place – and having just passed a negative covid test being probably the only allowable condition.

While Ardern, in the past few days, has said consequences should follow breaches of covid rules – like being tested by a GP for covid and then attending a gym instead of self-isolating – but with such an example now, consequences have not occurred.
And what consequence will there be and who will bear it if an outbreak of covid occurs in Queenstown, traced back to an Auckland traveler during lockdown?

I challenge Ardern to fully state what restrictions are being placed on Aucklanders proposing flying out of the city during their lockdown, including politicians.

  As it happens I came to Wellington yesterday along with maybe two or three hundred people.
  Plane loads of people fly out of Auckland every hour heading for the South Island.
  BTW
  To the best of my knowledge nobody in our suburb has been in infected this time or any other time.

The pretence that Covid-19 is truly a deadly disease in NZ is starting to slip. We are harangued daily by Ardern and her media that we are all in danger and so we must be getting tested. We must be getting tested otherwise we will not know that we have got the virus. This latest ‘lockdown’ is to deflect peoples attention from this uncomfortable truth. As for the people from Sth Akld I think a lot of them have already worked this out because it follows that it is likely that a lot of people have had it and not bothered about it very much because what is new about a runny nose and a bit of a cough. Why would an ‘overstayer’ want to put themselves into the clutches of the gov’t agencies for nothing anyway. It is quite interesting the attitude that Ardern and the Minister for Casual Racism towards Polynesians Hipkins take in talking down to the people taking the naughty children approach as if that then justifies further bullying of the rest of the country.

    Why did the PM issue a warning about Section 70, then?
    
    She is asking for everyone who may have come into contact with the new case to “do the right thing” and isolate.

  And then at the end of the article they say “Beside Officer Sicknick , two other officers who tried to defend the Capitol *later* died, both by suicide, according to the local police. ”
  I heard this claim on Newstalk zb’s american correspondent also. What evidence do they have that two of the thousands of officers at the capitol building committing suicide at some unreported time after the riots (months after?) , had anything to do with the actual riots? Where I live, no-one takes any notice of the Prime Ministerial edicts. We know we are healthy, and have faith in our own defence responses.
One of my neighbours has just rung me to tell me about the newest lockdown. She feels somewhat sorry for the Aucklanders, thinks the PM is over-reacting once again, but hey at least it’s keeping her busy, and at least the rest of us can turn off and ignore the whole silly carry-on.
In other words, she (and I) are over it. Totally.

“No-one intentionally sets out to put others at risk” says our leader, telling us not to blame people. FFS, the guy (not person) had symptoms for 4 days before he (not they) got tested, including loss of taste and smell, then disobeyed instructions after testing by going to the gym. That sounds pretty intentional to me.
If you have a zero cases policy, then you must have a zero tolerance policy. Otherwise it is all a waste of time

  The testing regime is not yet been demonstrated as being reliable in NZ except for creating fear and PR. The affect of that is that these lock downs may not be justified. The affects on the community have to be upheld too.
  
  The parties may not have had COVID. That condition needs to be really proven before stern public action is initiated. There are too many making money off COVID on the side. That should make our enforcers doubly cautious in their actions.

Do the lockdown security breaches highlight the unevenness of lockdown consequences.
Live in South Auckland so probably renting – government house price policies have massively increased rent.
Homelessness – so number one need is to somehow keep the rent payments under control.
Possibly family already working at multiple jobs to try to have a reasonable standard of living – can’t afford to lose their income.
Often larger households so means more contacts.
Should the Government be apologising for causing, or failing to reduce, so many of their problems.

So if Auckland goes without any new community cases for 7 days and then goes to level 2 but say a few days later a community outbreak occurs again does that mean back to level 3 or 4 again?

This could go on forever and ever until everyone is vaccinated and how long will that take and what about people who refuse vaccines?

This morning, discussing Maori wards on local bodies, Richard wrote off Hobson’s Choice but didn’t mention Judith Collins vowing to overturn the “undemocratic” law that scraps polls on the wards.

A democratic element remained, said Harman, in that the decision to establish a ward would be made by councils that themselves were democratically elected.

Collins’s move was one of the first signs of life in National since it was knocked down on 17 October.

It still might be a harder job than right-wingers hoped to get National off the canvas and boxing again.

On Maori wards, Jane Clifton, the Leftist on the radio panel, didn’t think the matter was going to be controversial. It didn’t affect efficiency of councils – yep, Clifton said efficiency – which was the bigger problem in local bodies.

Waititi’s post drew many concerns – many confused as to whether they should self-isolate, despite living out of Auckland – and whether he was providing official MoH advice.

After Ardern saying there actually are consequences available for those who get things wrong, let us see how far she will go – particularly in the face of Waititi not really withdrawing anything, but implying people have not caught up yet with him.

Ardern in the press n said that it had been months since anyone had died of Covid. Did she overlook the person who was taken from isolation to intensive care just a week or so ago, in the throes of terminal cancer and who was tested and found to be positive, and was recorded as a Covid death?

“We are formally recording the sad death of a patient with COVID-19 at North Shore Hospital, which was first announced on Saturday 13 February.

This death has now been included in our official COVID-19 related deaths. A total of 26 people have now died with COVID-19 in New Zealand.”
