Did the PM mislead the people of New Zealand with regard to Case L, the South Auckland KFC worker? This is a comment on the Unite Against Covid-19 FB page, by someone replying as an admin of the page, which describes itself as ptoviding “official information from the New Zealand Government about Covid-19” (my emphasis added):

Kia ora Nicole, case J (Kmart worker) and Case L (KFC worker) were not required to isolate at the time. The advice for all staff and students of Papatoetoe High School to isolate was updated on 23 February, after the two had attended their shifts at their workplaces. Close contacts and their families were advised to isolate and get tested.

Initially, casual plus contacts such as Case I, (today’s Case L sibling) were advised to get a test and self isolate but their household members were not required to do so. The family complied with the advice they were given at the time.

The Ministry of Health updated their advice on 23 February, following this high risk situation, stating everyone in a Papatoetoe High School household must stay away from work or any other school, educational facility or community setting (e.g. the supermarket or any other place outside the home). The school remains closed and no students or staff will be able to return until advised by a Medical Officer of Health. COVID-19 remains the problem, not the people who have it.

The advice from this official New Zealand Government FB page contradicts the Prime Minister directly. It states that case L was NOT required to self-isolate prior to working her shift at KFC. Subsequent advice did require the young woman to isolate, but that was NOT the advice she had initially been given.

Either the official New Zealand Government Covid-19 Facebook page is wrong, or the Prime Minister is wrong. Jacinda Ardern could, and should, defuse this by simply admitting she got it wrong.

  Jacinda Ardern, saying she was wrong is the hardest thing. Expect then more deflections from her (or non-appearances, as in yesterday when Robertson fronted the covid press conferences).
  
  Out of interest, has Ardern ever admitted she was wrong about something? Not even once? Does anyone know?
  
  Otherwise do we have the world’s “most perfect person” … someone who says she never lies and is never wrong ?

  Advice and advise. They don’t tell you to do it or else…
  If those terms are used it does not give the recipient the message between the eyes.
  There is flexibility in how they can interpret what they are told.

  One can also look back at the advice available early on February 23, last updated on February 17, and it clearly states that household contacts DO NOT NEED TO ISIOLATE.

    I’ve been on the wrong side of a woman who couldn’t cope with being found wrong (about anything). It was nasty, especially as in my case I didn’t know what she was talking about.
    People in high places should abstain from personal criticism of anyone of lower status than themselves, otherwise they just look snarky and spiteful.

The Kiwiblog Downvote Olympics have grown in popularity over the past decade. The competition sees seasoned professionals and aspiring newcomers vie for the downvote crown by posting commentary that rigorously defies approval while simultaneously receiving prodigious, single-click opprobrium.

There have been some notable winners and contenders over the years. For long-time spectators the once-famous, and probably still stoned philu, regularly delivered top performances, racing to downvote oblivion in a manner that really helped put this sport on the map. His novel technique of publicly torturing full-stops together with his brutal abuse of the English prose saw more the literary minded community members rush to support his podium aspirations.

Another long-time contender is mikenmild/mikeenmildagain, otherwise known as milky. Merit must be rewarded here for conscientious effort with the ‘International day of the …’ series, and his delicately manicured trolling of any comment that fails to demonstrate even fleeting observance of left-leaning sycophancy. His continued attempts for the Gold are thwarted by occasionally constructive comments on military history, along with lucid commentary on some sporting topics. Experts agree that milky will need to cease such commentary and spend more time at snarkytraining.com if he is to truly realise his full potential.

At the not-so-smart, scrapper end of the competitor spectrum lies SB2/stephie/stiffy. Consistent effort over many years has led to him being awarded the gold on a number of occasions, with a notable technique being his willingness to introduce the apparent failings of Trump into comments about favorite jam flavours, cricket and Scottish highland dancing.

A one-time record holder was William of Ockham. His daily 08:00.0001 GD comments parroting climate change alarmism included hitherto unseen cut-n-paste prowess, augmented with truly moronic one-liners. Never before in this sport have downvoting frenzies been so comprehensive, with participants encouraging each other to work harder in support of William attaining his daily medal in record time.

All competitive sports have aspiring newcomers. These people have spent years in training, working under direct tutelage of their gold-medal brandishing heroes. They train in secret, and in some cases quite literally locked away from public view. With a distressingly comfortable, gun-slinging style, the field (and one poor young woman) has been blown wide open by Brian McDonald. Not since William’s untimely and exhaustion-led retirement have followers of the sport had such an opportunity to reward personality obsessed, banal commentary with a blizzard of downticks.

How much longer will Brian hold the crown? No one knows, but if history has taught the followers of the sport anything, it’s that the allure a gold medal and a podium finish will have many more Downvote Olympic contenders lining up for years to come.

        From memory it was introduced after the mosque attacks but I feel that it may need looking at as it does seem to limit the free flow of conversation.
        Maybe there needs to be another round of consideration for those of us who post here regularly (both those of us who use our real name and those who do not) to have immediate approval.

        You’re right about the timing of the introduction of moderation Charmaine.
        
        I think, on balance, moderation has improved the quality of the conversation, despite some legitimate gripes about uneven moderation practice. The greatest downside in my view is the delay in posts appearing.
        
        My thanks to the moderators for the work they put into what remains a vibrant, informative and often amusing forum.

        I was a hospital orderly at Waikato, and we used to see every part from ICU, mortuary, birthing, oncology, etc.
        Talking of ‘unique perspectives’ from the inside then, such as SB2 credits himself, mine might be far from unique when I say he comes across as a contrarian, who delights in posting a few sentences in put down of other people’s posts.
        
        Given that SB2 called concerns over Covid in the EARLY days of the outbreak (when IMO concern was most logical, due to lack of information aside from China locking down internally); KBer concerns were ‘hysterical’ then and literally scoffed at people saying they were fearful on this Blog.
        Now he has changed his tune, it is clear he posts just to be an arsehole primarily – rather than any true conviction, relevent expertise or interest in communication.
        
        A troll, albeit a troll who happens to work in health away from the border in some capacity. And he got a jab.

  You weren’t posting here as Krazykiwi when those other posters were present, so I’d say you were one of those that announced they were leaving when DPF tightened the posting rules, then snuck back using another name.
  Not unexpected as it fits with listening in to other people’s conversations, running down now absent posters, or finding scientific posts which you claim fit with your thoughts so as to promote yourself.

  That was an entertaining read, kk. However, I want to point out to / remind Kiwibloggers, of the following.
  
  On 27 March 2019, DPF put up a post entitled, Kiwiblog content and comments (see https://www.kiwiblog.co.nz/2019/03/kiwiblog_content_and_comments.html).
  
  Under the subheading, That guest post, he said, “[…]. The thing I like on Kiwiblog is that we have people who comment from across the political spectrum. Views get challenged. My views get challenged every day by commenters.”
  
  So, my point is, although our gracious host is (I assume) politically centre-right — whereas, in my view, most commenters here are right-wing (tending towards, and in many cases achieving, RWNJ status) — he has made it very clear that Kiwiblog is not a right-wing echo chamber.
  
  Therefore, whether the great majority of Kiwiblog commenters like it or not, anyone, of whatever political stripe, can comment here, and, so long as we comply with the rules, our comments will be welcome — at least by those who matter.

For all the Journalists and people out there that say it is wrong to call Jacinda Ardern our Prime Minister and Ashley Bloomfield liars you have very short memories and you only have to go back to last year a d the PPE debacle to understand Bloomfield and Ardern lied their arses off saying they had plenty of gear for those on the front line but push came th shoveit was no where to be found and took a group of wealthy New Zealander’s to put together a plan to get more into the Country. So for these people to go out and use their power and lies about a 21 year old saying they informed her 15 odd times could be lies exactly the same as when they coninuallylied about how much PPE gear they had.

      I suspect she will be getting her vaccination with the first dose of the second delivery of the vaccine. She is not waiting. To do so would inconvenience her travelling overseas and we can’t have that.

        That is somewhat different to what she said on the box, in answer to a question, about a week or 10 days ago. No matter.
        
        It certainly is a balancing act. We await her jab, and her next overseas trip. I doubt that either are imminent, but we’ll see.

  One would expect, however, those unprepared to be vaccinated would be shuffled off somewhere else.

    That’s interesting, and thanks, but my question relates to the number who are refusing now that the vaccines are available. It’s not just border workers but their families as well and given the limited evidence that the vaccines prevent the inoculated from transmitting the virus, it must be a matter of public interest that current figures be made available.

      As the “vaccine” is only approved for emergency use as not adequately tested we all have the right to informed consent–that includes the right of refusal, we are not guinea pigs.
      If you offer your arm that can be taken as consent but a question not answered to your satisfaction is sufficient to deny it.
      
      I have experienced the weird situation of an anaesthetist seeking consent for a procedure after administering his drugs and I was going under.
      
      I may consider the J & J vaccine but the others are not in my view safe for me.

New Zealand has achieved 0.02 doses per 100 people and ranks #91 of all countries in terms of performance of vaccine rollout.

Remarkably, even Brazil, Argentina and Peru, which 2 weeks ago had secured no vaccines, have got their supplies up and running. Brazil has administered 8.6 million doses in a couple of weeks. Only 4 percent of the population but it is a good start.

Why is the media not demanding answers? Why don’t they play back to Hipkins his words from only 3 months ago? Why can’t journalists devote the same 5 minutes it took me to find this data?

    In my 36 years of following NZ politics I cannot recall such a total abandonment of ministerial responsibility in time of a major crisis.
    
    Churchill was out inspecting Luftwaffe bomb damage daily and regularly took long, arduous and dangerous flights to visit troops and raise morale in North Africa, the Mediterranean and elsewhere.
    
    David Clark, our Health Minister, in the greatest health crisis in a century, fled the capital leaving others to do the heavy lifting, parked up at home in Dunedin and logged on to Zoom for the odd call with his minions – in-between bike rides and beach trips.
    
    And Martin defends him and tries to divert.
    
    Wow.
    
    But of course we all know Martin’s response if this was a National MP exhibiting the exact same behaviours……Don’t we Martin?

This is the result of the good people in Dunedin showing their level of discernment in choosing competence and ability over ‘likes’. They probably gave up when they couldn’t find “Curran” on the voting slip, and figured “Clark” was close enough.

  I also went went for daily walks under Level 4, because I could, looking at those damned teddy bears in the windows.
  In fact there were a lot of people walking in the streets hereabouts all studiously keeping a wide berth round one another.
  The occasional police car drove by making sure folks followed the rules.
  The difference, as I recall, with the two Papatoetoe women was that they were from different households one of which already had known infected members. Maybe even her. Just a little careless.
  
  Dr Clark took his family about 20km in his car with his name all over it and went for a walk on a beach; among other ill advised things.
  Nevertheless he still had no trouble seeing off the even more wretched Michael Woodhouse at the election.

Morning all.
As the government considers more assistance to the tourism sector – perhaps a scheme to provide reedemable vouchers, or some variant of, to tax paying households could both stimulate domestic tourism, and serve to be a touch more benefical than handouts alone.
Take a trip to ‘x’ – spend ‘x’ there and you can claim x % back in terms of a tax break?

At least tax payers could get a trip out of it, the tourism sector remains engaged and skilled, and lets be honest…the government will tip money down the drain after more hairbrained ideas than this.

Unbelievable. The National Party finally admits personal responsibility is not always the answer, and that the private sector can’t be trusted to look after their own workers properly!

They call for feckless, untrustworthy employers to be taken out of the equation and for a bigger and more benevolent government to get the job done of paying workers to isolate. It’s an admission that decades of neoliberal creep into the workplace has resulted in a culture of fear in workers who are bullied into turning up to work when sick.

Nice of them to put a $68/hour cap on the scheme!

  In Taiwan, they pay a small income to people who are quarintining, and they put a massive fine on those caught sneaking out the the noodle bars who should not. There is more use of technology, such as apps and video check-ins from the get go.
  So if we want to look overseas for different or perhaps better ways of doing this, WHY NOT?
  Taiwan has been far more successful than us, and there is no QR code stuff. The border management has been much more successful.
  To keep doing the same thing, and expect a different result. No thanks.
  So it is time to ask what more we can do, such as isolate people from high risk countries outside of our CBD localities, etc. etc.
  Take off your partisan lens, and look at proposals on their own merits.

  The world has more than 7,000 languages.
  
  The intelligent immigration strategy of assimilation, would concentrate on giving immigrants a basic grasp of English.
  
  This would apply especially to refugees, and most Vietnamese in New Zealand will originate from the great boat escape from communism at the end end of the Vietnam war.

    Michael Morrah was often credited on KB with comments which noted him as a unique force as a NZ journalist; he probed on the poor distribution of flu vaccine and the lack of PPE……SB2: swing and a miss. I remember it quite well.
    So while Newshub might be up for criticism, it seems some people can see some merit in things (media outlets, political philosophy or parties) rather than ‘All good’ and ‘All Bad’.
    You should try it.

  Now todays article on Stuff shows the official covid unite govt facebook page said, ” Case J and Case L were not required to isolate at the time…..Initially Casual Plus contacts such as Case I (Case L’s sibling) were advised to get a test and self isolate but household members were not required to do so. The family complied with the advise given at he time”

  Iran, the long game is to use the carrot because their population largely doesn’t support the regime.
  
  China, the priority for the next few years should be gathering a global alliance to face off against China. The US needs to lead it. The Pacific nations are largely on board. But Europe is the problem. Get Europe tied in and then have the face off with China.

I remember when

Level 2 in the south Island.
The last truly community cases in the South Island were reported recovered on the 28th May, 1920.
On the 2nd and 3rd November there were two cases relating to the Russian seamen in isolation that were called community in Christchurch.
Really they were MIQ/Community cases.
We are starting our second year of living with covid in New Zealand.
What are the changes to systems that the year of experience has taught us?
The notable changes are?????
Incidentally Cook Strait would seem to make the South Island the equivalent of another country.
Why does it not have systems that reflect this fact.
We all know that France, Belgium, The Netherlands and the UK have their own covid rules.

When the dust finally settles, this will be the single most expensive event in New Zealand’s history, and it is essential that a wide-ranging, independent, high level investigation takes place.   I definitely think a Royal Commission will be needed. There are lessons to be learnt.
  
  However, I did think Richard Prebble’s article was a tad one sided. He only covered failures, no indication of any successes. Overall we have done pretty well. Obviously things can be done better, but the New Zealand response is hardly the disaster that Prebble implied.

      It was clear during last year’s Epidemic Response Committee hearings that the Government lurches from one episode to another with poorly coordinated follow through.
      
      Last night Dr Reti pointed out that the contact tracing for the latest South Auckland outbreak is much too slow.. and is well out of the time frame recommended by the Verrall report.

    I agree a Royal Commission needs to be undertaken. And everything must be on the table, the good, the bad, and the ugly.
    We must start at the absolute beginning and discuss everything. Every single decision from the government must be scrutinized and the outcomes that flowed from that. It might actually be best to have multiple Royal Commissions to focus on different aspects – health, legal, governance etc. And most importantly the Commissioners cannot have had any part in the process.

      I’ve always thought that the approaches to the royal commissions should be along the lines of the South African Truth & Reconciliation hearings. All the dirty laundry gets aired with no consequences – if there was something done and you are open about it, learn from it and move on. It’s not about the people, its about the system and fixing it to ensure we learn from it and don’t make the same mistakes again. Obviously vastly different circumstances (and always admire the Saffers for how they got through that) but the intent should be the same – it’s not about blame, it’s about learning and making sure it doesn’t happen again.
      Sadly, we all know it will be political, with the token right of center voice ‘for balance’ and will be a 3 year talk fest and a complete white wash.

    Until one month ago Vietnam was performing better than NZ in keeping on top of the virus… but has just surpassed NZ’s case numbers and deaths

Vietnam have a population of 96,000,000, a population density 16 times higher than New Zealand, and land borders with 3 other countries including China. New Zealand has one of the easier jobs in the world, I’d say we were doing “as well as would be expected and no more, and possibly less”

    Why hasn’t the South Island had any cases since November even with inter-island travel.

The COVID-positive KFC worker, Case L, told Newshub her sister Case I received a text message on February 14 saying casual contacts, Case I, needed to self-isolate but their families did not need to.
Case L said she saw the message and about a week later went to work at KFC on February 22. The following day her sister Case I tested positive on February 23. Case L tested positive on February 26. [1]

It would seem the notification was sent not to Case L, but her sister and contained incorrect information.
The communication used the term “casual contact” without defining it.
Some communications were through the school, not health officials.
Three letters were involved, apparently sent by ordinary mail, as reliable as that is.
And up to 15 other attempts were made to communicate, presumably with Case L, which should have raised the possibility she was not at home, where she was wrongly instructed to be.

Surely inhibiting anyone taking up Jacinda Ardern’s plea – that they correct family or friends, or anyone they believe to be breaking covid rules – must be the fear that they will be a successful as she has been.

However he got more than he bargained for. The locals climbed into him. His comments were dead set useless. He is another Cabinet failure.

  Funny how a government that seems happy to splash cash on ideologically aligned areas of the economy seems pretty happy to leave our tourist sector up the creek without a paddle.
  I’ve struggled with sympathising with the tourist sector during their current plight – particularly the operators that are geared totally towards the high paying overseas tourist markets and have never really cared much for kiwi customers. However, the facts are they do (or used to), represent a significant sector of our GDP and cutting them adrift seems very ideological. It’s taken years to get our tourism sector to the level it is – it’s not perfect, but it does add real value to our GDP and should be supported. However, the apparent lack of sympathy from the clown show in charge does remind me of the old saying ‘ be careful what you wished for’. Over 50% of the electorate voted for ‘feelz’ – I think we are all going to truly understand that phrase over the next few years.

Hearing about all the cancer sufferers denied life saving drugs, as Pharmac doesn’t have enough funding, makes me sad and angry. All the millions spent on Pike River would have been better spent looking after the living. The Pike families (the ones after their pound if flesh at least) should visit with some of these poor people fighting for their lives and accept that no amount of money will bring the miners back.

  New drugs come out constantly, and it seems to some of us lay persons that high charges, at least early after drugs’ release, must be needed to finance research and huge testing costs.
  
  On the other hand, critics say patent laws need changing in the United States, where most pioneering is done. They talk of tactics such as “ever greening” – adding unnecessary features to justify new patents and extend control of intellectual property.
  
  Jacinderella’s having a princess’s ball with taxpayer money – a hundred million there, fifty million to her media mates, then another fifty million to keep their beady eyes watching the Right.
  
  In her royal progress towards socialism, showering the voters with dollars, Pharmac is one of the more worthy corners for munificence.

    Pharmac have to the best they can with the budget they have.
    
    Sure, we can always spend more, but where’s the reasonable cut off? Ultimately all resources are limited as much as we want to hug everyone.
    
    Some drugs are extremely expensive and expenditure on those limits expenditure on other drugs – as well as roads, schools, whatever.
    
    Whether or not it is reasonable to spend at Keytruda levels, I can’t say, but it has been used as a benchmark – at this stage the spending on Keytruda is being considered too much.
    
    But we’ve just spent tens of billions of dollars on lockdown etc which will pretty much extend the lives of maybe a few thousand people by a year or so. In effect lockdown gives the same benefits of Keytruda for maybe 2 to 5 thousand people, but at a cost of $10 million or more each.
    
    So if spending on Keytruda (at $250k per person) is a bad idea, then spending on lockdown was 40 times worse.

  Unfortunately, many of these drugs are life-extending rather than life-saving. eg keytruda (IIRC) costs about $250k/year and 40% of sufferers are still alive after three years.

      If a life was to be extended by three years or so there’s the possibility of new treatments becoming available in that time which could mean even more time for a patient. Sometimes that could mean a parent being able to see their children grow up.

  It is the overall amount of funding, rather than Pharmac’s processes, that need review.
  There will always be prioritisation and rationing of pharmaceuticals, like all other resources in the health system. so the question is really one of the total amount we spend on health, and how that spending is appropriately allocated to different methods of prevention and treatment.
  Putting forward sad cases (the favoured tactic of the pharmaceutical companies) does not help. We are often told that this or that drug is available in other countries. In most cases, those countries are considerably wealthier than NZ.

    If they are wealthier then surely they are larger which means more demand so technically minimal demand should mean minimal cost here in NZ.
    
    That said, when we see money squandered on government folly plus mindless expansion within the public service you can understand why many, especially those close to the action, get a tad testy.

In a moment of idle curiosity I searched wiki for ‘fascism’ and ‘communism’ and got these lead sentences (edited to remove footnote numbers, link identifiers, etc):

and

Communism (from Latin communis, ‘common, universal’) is a philosophical, social, political and economic ideology and movement whose ultimate goal is the establishment of a communist society, namely a socioeconomic order structured upon the ideas of common ownership of the means of production and the absence of social classes, money and the state.

So one was a brutal historical event, the other a philosophical ideology. The lead sentences in the Britannica were just as misleading.

Skimming both entries, I learnt that fascism involved massacres and genocides but nothing like that in communism, apart from a mention of several old time communists executed after the Moscow trials. No holodomor, gulags, mass famine, cultural revolution, year zero etc.

I look forward to the new NZ history curriculum, whose omission of the musket wars renders incomprehensible the signing of the ToW, Maori chiefs’ speeches in support of it, and the later support by some tribes for the settler government in the 1860s.

        That is fine, to point out for instance that the musket AND the introduction of potato as a food crop allowed for wars to be so much more severe.

        But why not recognise the pre-existing tribal dynamics, the desire for utu, cannibalism, passion for fighting and warrior-prestige, the motivations of slave taking or conquest, and the devastation caused by very much uniquely Maori aspects of the musket wars?
        
        No side should feel exclusively pride, and no side should be put on a pedestal here.
        Hopefully this is a bit clearer than my initial comment, which was concerned with the fashionable practice of assigning all that is wrong in the world, and nothing good, along a pure race-based lens.
        Given the masochistic tendencies of some, intersecting with ‘knowing just enough to be dangerous’ of others, I am not optimistic for teachers to be able to do NZ history justice.

        A few things Mike. It’s patronising to Maori to characterise them as some kind of passive dumb native where this is concerned. European settlement of NZ was delayed not only by remoteness but also because of the fearsome reputation Maori had in Europe, carried back by Tasman and Cook following encounters they had with Maori very determined to defend their realms. Secondly, Maori were very adept and adaptable where trade with Europeans was concerned. Honga Hika unilaterally made his way to Britain and Australia, returning to NZ with an enormous number of muskets, contributing significantly to the number of deaths in the musket wars, where its estimated Maori wiped out 20% of their own numbers. European legal intervention was conceived in part to prevent full scale Maori self annihilation. Sure, none of this would have happened if Europeans never turned up, but that was inevitable, the seafaring powers were going head to head for geographical expansion. All the current nonsense writing this off as nothing other than European subordination of Maori is both patronising and wrong.

Obviously around mid-morning once the senior staff get in (under instructions from L9), the articles are buried and replaced with ‘Yay Jacinda’ tosh and so on. Just wondering are Brian McDonald, Martin Williams, surfing, etc on the Labour party payroll ie paid trolls. No one would spend that much time on a site that is divergent with their world view. (I doubt that’s there real names either).

I agree with the suggestion made the other day to suspend their posting once they reach a certain number of downvotes over say a week. Just put them in a bit of timeout.

I’m not saying close down free speech but I’m against constant trolling. Generally I just skip over their comments. But it’s kind of like pollution on this page having such passive aggressive stuff constantly on what is, otherwise, a very constructive site, the likes of not seen in NZ media.

This is an extract from an agenda paper for Wellington City Council, justifying a 13.5 percent rates increase:

“Climate change is already here, and its effects are just beginning. When it rains heavily at a high tide, or when the waves from a severe storm crash against the coast, we are already experiencing early impacts of climate change. In Wellington City about $7 billion in property alone is at risk from sea level rise according to the latest guidance from the Ministry for the Environment -and our cherished spaces like Civic Square, the waterfront, and Waitangi park are at risk if we don’t move emissions to zero. In response Wellington City Council has adopted Te Atakura -First to Zero carbon emissions [sic] by 2050. This requires the reduction of city wide net emissions by 43% by 2030.”

Firstly, they are grossly exaggerating sea level rise. But more importantly, Wellington reducing its emissions will have no impact on ‘climate change’. That is so stupid that I should not need to point it out but there you go.

Whatever they are spending on their “Te Atakura -First to Zero” plan should be the priority for an economy drive.

These people are an utter menace.

    Read a few studies on this while at varsity in the late 70’s.

      I recalled a study at a US university in the late 60’s where blondes were deemed to be the “new” blacks and were required, on campus, to adhere to the southern segregation rules.
      
      It was quickly abandoned as the pushes rapidly escalated to slaps and punches as otherwise normal citizens “called out” or disciplined transgressors.

        There’s also the virtue signalling factor, where folks have to display to others that they really are part of the team.
        
        Hubby’s maternal grandfather was shot by fellow villagers as the Russians advanced.
        They wanted to show the Soviets that they weren’t really German/Nazi sympathisers… they were willing to be good Commies.

        The Hubby’s maternal Grandfather was in Yugoslavia during the war…. no problem whilst the Germans held power in his district, but when the Red Army arrived in the village, the village men shot Grandfather-in-law to show the Reds that they weren’t really German collaborators at all.
        
        The M-in-law was 16… how she escaped through Russian / German / Yugoslav partisan lines doesn’t bear thinking about.

I see Minister Hipkins, according to the NZH, has “blasted” Brian and Hannah Tamaki for being being “completely irresponsible” for leaving Auckland on the eve of the latest lockdown to commence a tour of the congregation. If it’s so irresponsible how can Hipkins explain that it is also completely legal and within the rules that he himself sets out as the all powerful Minister of Health? I mean, Chippy, if it’s so heinous then maybe your rules aren’t right?

Might it have anything to do with the fact that Brian and Hannah are not his type? I mean at exactly the same time Ardern and Bloomfield have been very, very slow to condemn people who actually broke the rules. To paraphrase Bloomfield “I don’t need to pass comment, they are already feeling terrible for their transgressions”

  Hmm … anybody remember how Minister Hipkins reacted to Hone Harawira driving INTO Auckland last year (in Level 4 if I recall), to supposedly pick up some medical supplies … and stopping by his sister’s house for a “well-deserved feed”?
  
  One thing’s for sure, Jacinda’s “be kind” mantra has well and truly been thrown out the window by both herself and her own Ministers.
