An unsuccessful person has the audacity to tell successful people how they should feel.

It seems that we should start defining ourselves according to the river we live closest to rather than by our professions because that’s what Maori did and they are well connected and have more healthy social structures.

“Hi I’m Richie McCaw I live near the Selwyn River, except when it runs underground which is most of the time then I live closer to the Waimak”.

Of course Maori people didn’t define themselves according to their profession. There were very few professions in Maori subsistence societies. People would get tired of hearing “Hi I’m Rangi and I dig kumara and catch fish”.

Successful people tend to be passionate about their area of expertise. They are successful. They make society function. Why not just leave them to get on with being successful?

        I’ve lost count of the number of times either the Horrid or BOP Times implores me to take a free no-obligation 6-week trial subscription, no doubt around the time they’re counting subscribers.   Funny, I read the article and was expecting it to have been written by someone with a maori background, possibly an academic. Had to chuckle when I saw her photo, a white privileged, middle class woman married to a successful businessman, expouting , “do as I say not as I do”. Shouldn’t have bothered. This is what Stuff are all about these days. Guilt ridden white libels or aggressive part Maori academics tell us how bad colonialism has been for NZ.

  Maori never fled NZ, they gave an opportunity for defeated tribes to regain their strength and fought beside one another in two World Wars with distinction.

    Of the six atrocities known to have been committed by NZ units during WW2 five were committed by the maori Bn .
    This included burning wounded German soldiers alive at Minquar Qaim and murdering Italian POWs at El Mreir ridge and Takrouna.
    Despite being only 5% of the strength on 2NZEF the Maori Bn were resposible for more than 50% of disciplinary issues .
    They also had nearly 60% of hospitalizations for std’s , 5 of the 10 Mb Co’s were sacked for various offences ranging from refusing to give back property looted from German POW’s to ordering Men to murder POW’s at San Silvestro.
    These are recorded facts not B/S Brian.

    Like everyone else, the history is mixed. Waikato Maori, for understandable reasons, did not fight alongside other tribes in the NZ forces in World War 1. In the land wars, many Maori fought on the side of the British and the settlers.
    
    The “acts of chivalry”, Brian McD talks of, surely do not include enslavement and cannibalism of defeated tribes.
    
    “Maori never fled New Zealand”. They didn’t have the means. They had lost the art of ocean navigation and building ocean-going canoes that brought them to New Zealand centuries before.

        If I remember David Lewis’s book on Pacific Navigation correctly, this was because they had familiar star paths, ocean currents, bird migrations etc for navigating rough directions in latitude but you must have an accurate clock for calculating longitude

      In the initial Alamein attack, 28 Battalion was allocated the ‘mopping up’ role, behind the two brigades that led the attack, so was split for this into companies. The battalion operated as a full unit in the subsequent attacks. I’d be interested in any reference to this being anything other than a routine assignment.

    I am open to moral guidance from many people. You are not one of them.
    
    If you want to be a successful person, then emulate successful people.
    
    In the context of being a successful person why would I want to emulate Maori?
    
    You’re not making much of a case there. Being revengeful or having ancestors or making voyages or being born by a different river hardly makes one successful.
    
    When we meet new people we ask them questions to show our interest in those people. With cultures that have professional people, multiple languages, and many dimensions there are a wider set of things to talk about.
    
    Subsistence cultures are the same the world over. They don’t have many things to discuss. They know all the people that live close by. If you meet someone new then they come from somewhere else, so that”s the first thing you’d ask them.
    
    I grew up spending a lot of time talking to rural African people (mainly Zulu and Pondo). The standard question when you met someone new was to ask where they came from. It was rather pointless asking them what they did for a living because that would be the same: herding a few cattle and raising maize.
    
    In clan-based warrior cultures knowing where someone comes from is the first step to classifying them as a friend or a foe.

What happened to the allegations on petrol price gouging that Jacinda Ardern and her fix it Minister Megan
Woods leveled at those involved the market.
So why didn’t they make this law in their first term of Government or are they banking on talking about it like everything else they to maintain the middle voter. Petrol is now 50cents dearer than when Labour promised to stop gouging and I guess they were proved wrong and the cause was though their climate policy, so wind up the public with lies and deciet by going after others from other industries.

I remember when

The author of a recently published book suggests 5.2 million people die from inactivity each year.
It states that inactivity is the 4th biggest killer in the world.
1.5 billion people are so inactive they are at risk.
86% of British children move so little their long-term health is in jeopardy. The argument is that our lives are being stripped of ‘incidental movement.’ This isn’t purposeful exercise but everyday activity.

The reporter (loose term), let slip that it will take them 1 hr LONGER to get to Auckland, than if they drove.
Lets start a book on how many will be taking it in 1 month, 2 months, 6 months?
Getting up 1 hr earlier and getting home 1 hr later.

    In 5 years electric VTOL air taxis will be able to undercut these trains, and present a far faster, cleaner, greener option that can fly to and from any heliport. From below it appears the will initially be charging ~$1000/hr (half of what a typical helicopter costs) they can eventually drop to a small fraction of that as they work the kinks out through increased production and learning curves, but even initially they can do it for $125/pax unsubsidised with 25 minute flight time, whereas the train is costing $500/pax with >95% subsidy.
    
    This white elephant train is clearly doomed to obsolescence even now. Expect embarrassing stories about low patronage in a few months and a coup de gras within the year.

        Does depend on what you mean by “mutation”.
        
        All RNA viruses like BCV’s mutate quite rapidly, and at reasonably well defined rates in specific areas. For example, their genetic code (the coding part anyway) is broken into groups that encode for specific amino acids, but only some of the codon is specific, there is one part that may relate to geometry and expression but doesn’t change the amino acid definition. Those parts can change it relatively fixed rates as they only minimally affect the virus. This fact can be used to “date” viral samples as overall the % change in these null codes is related to replication distance apart.
        
        What is unusual about the Covid-19 virus is that it has two specific spike protein mutations right from the start that are essentially optimised for human interaction, one being the oft referred to “furin cleavage site”. Those specific changes are NOT found in any other BCV from any source, and would appear to be a specific human oriented adaptions.
        
        If there is an intermediate host that allowed this change, then it has not been identified. For example for the original SARS outbreak, the intermediate was identified as Civet Cats, and the original SARS virus was well adapted to infecting them (that’s how they were identified). But although being adapted to Civets allowed the virus to “leap” to Humans, it was not well adapted to humans and as a result although considerably more lethal than Covid-19, the SARS virus was unable to spread well enough to sustain a true pandemic.
        
        Covid-19 as pointed out is different, it “appears” to be specifically well adapted to humans, and as a secondary, to mice. But Mice are not an intermediate host possibility as normally they are not affected by BCV’s. However, just as a note, “humanised” mice are the lab animal of choice used in “Gain of Function” research with viruses.
        
        There is fairly compelling evidence as above that Covid-19 is in fact an accidental lab escape from a GoF experiment. And it’s not just China involved, the GoF research on BCV’s that was carried out at the Wuhan lab was sponsored by US researchers, and the funding for it was apparently slipped through deliberately avoiding the usual NIH safety reviews required. This research was carried out in the US until around 2012-3, but was stopped because of safety concerns; so was transferred to somewhere with less concern for safety.

From court evidence to date Chauvin should walk. Floyd died from drug overdose. Meth & fentanyl. Had hypertension and heart problems. The attending officers tried to save Floyd’s life had him the recovery position by time the paramedics arrived.

Chauvin was acting within his training and guidelines in restraining the much larger angry drug overdosing Floyd despite what a few amateur by standers claimed. There was no blood choke. What a clown this witness is. In time the angry crowd gathered which prevented the police and then medical staff giving timely medical assistance to the drug overdosed Floyd.

Chauvin prosecution pure political. The New York Times desperate to dox the Jury and the angry mobs are gathering. The evidence against Chauvin is so weak and emotional they had to bring private lawyers for prosecution team. Nasty stuff. Show trial.

  Have you ever heard of positional asphyxia? When the body is restricted in its ability to ingest enough oxygen to survive when it is in a heightened state of anxiety or stress, because of the way it is restrained?
  Just because Floyd had heart problems and had taken drugs doesn’t mean that the restraint wasn’t a real and substantial cause of death. At law, you take your victim as you find them. The “eggshell skull” rule. When the “few amateur by standers” include the Chief of Police and the guy in charge of use of force training, then you have to think that Chauvin has problems.

I can think of no end of cases where I judge that not to be true – eg people sitting around in jail for life at huge expense (and concomitant loss of freedom), or dementia and other brain-damaged individuals that require the steady expenditure of other’s lives to maintain theirs without ever paying society back for it in some manner.

        Wrong, the worst I think one can accuse the police of is not recognising earlier that Floyd was suffering from a potentially lethal overdose of Fentanyl and that the complaint “I can’t breathe” – uttered a number of times before he was restrained, is in fact symptomatic of a Fentanyl overdose induced incipient cardiac arrest.
        
        The autopsy revealed that his heart was significantly enlarged, he had arterial disease, and his lungs were also enlarged and full of fluid. The fluid issue is common in fentanyl OD cases.
        
        It does seem likely that unless his actual cardiac distress was recognised promptly and he was calm enough to be given emergency treatment (which he wasn’t, hence the officially approved use of the neck hold to subdue him enough for transport), Floyd would have died fairly shortly regardless of what the police did.
        
        I doubt the neck pressure helped, but it is also apparent from the official autopsy that there was no injuries and, most importantly, no sign of positional asphyxia.
        
        It is a show trial, made worse by the pretence that it is in some way a fair trial.

    According to Micheal Kings fantastic History of New Zealand Aotearoa is not and never had been the Maori name of the entire land mass only being popularised as such by Europeans as such in the early 20th century. Rather they had names for the separate islands not having the concept of NZ as nation and single geographical state. Sort of hilarious really the wokery being invested by virtuous conscious. Forgive me for not giving precise reference but I’m on holiday and don’t have the book to hand.

        Yes New Zealand’s original Maori name was Nu Tireni. This was a translation from New Zealand as there was no name for the entire country – populated by independent tribes.
        Aotearoa was the name of the North Island.
        Tongue slightly in cheek but maybe the North Island could change its name to Aotearoa and the South Island could be either independent or a state of Oz? That way the progressives could have their broken country and the Southerners could open oil and gas and get on with living 🙂

This time [meeting Wednesday] all families are invited – and there will be a vote on whether the Government should review its decision not to go further.

A Cabinet Paper on the Establishment Of The Pike River Recovery Agency says at paragraph 37 –
At a point when the process of recovering the drift is well advanced the responsible Minister will report to Cabinet on whether any further work to assess the feasibility of re-rentering the mine workings should be undertaken. The responsible Minister can also at the appropriate point, in the light of information gained from the recovery, make recommendations about any further inquiries necessary into the Pike River mining disaster.

Point 1 – reference to actually viewing and evaluating the roof-fall is in the draft of this Cabinet Paper, but does not appear to be in the Paper itself.
Point 2 – the Paper says the “Minister will report to Cabinet on whether any further work to assess the feasibility of re-rentering the mine workings should be undertaken” – so Little will say whether an assessment will be done. Indeed he appears have already done that, recommending “no assessment”.

So, one assumes that if the families vote in favour of further action, that action will ask Little to assess safety and cost of re-rentering the mine workings. – a families “yes” vote would see Little doing some more paperwork, which would still then go, with his recommendation, to Cabinet for a final decision.

Police prosecutions and police independence are supposed to be sacrosanct, so a minister pre-judging a prosecution and what could impact its success could be seen as over-reach. And if those warnings potentially spook victims into silence, that’s beyond the pale.

Families voting “No” will likely see Little stay with the decision he has already made – to not do the assessment – so, with no recommendations on safety or cost, and no funding approved, no entry of the mine workings would occur.

That, on the negative side, likely means that any Police case relating to the popular trending theory that the main ventilation fan, or parts of it, caused the explosion, would not be proven without the physical object that re-entry of the mine workings themselves could provide.
The families can not vote on any Police decision, but to agree with Little on no re-entry to the actual mine working does obviously handicap further Police investigations.

As the Police have requested six boreholes be made, the locations of those and reasons for selecting those locations, may disclose their interests in securing further visual evidence. Knowledge of those locations and reasons could possibly influence the families in their vote on Little doing an assessment.
It also questions the transparent interaction, or lack of it, between groups now still involved at Pike River –

Following paragraph 37 (quoted above) there is –
the usual kindness, well-being transparency, integrity, honesty which is the “bullshit” that almost no stake-holder really appears to adhere to –
38. Families’ perceptions about the outcomes ultimately achieved will be dependent on their meaningful engagement in the decision-making process.
39. In this context we propose that the following operating principles apply to the Agency:
• at all times act with the safety of those being considered for re-entry into the mine as paramount.
• establish a trusted relationship with the families, including by working together on the design and implementation of a process that engenders public confidence, emphasising public transparency
• proactively engage with the families in its decision-making processes, taking full account of information and expertise the families bring to the process
• act transparently in the conduct of its work, providing opportunities for input into and on draft conclusions, particularly in regard to the families
40. The Commerce Commission and the Resource Management Act provide models for effective and transparent consultation processes. The Agency will design its processes with these and other best practice models in mind. – Cabinet Paper

It would seem in demanding the action of paragraph 37 (referring to the assessment to re-enter the mine itself) that paragraphs 39 – 40 are being ignored in terms of polite but strong, transparent, honest interaction – supposedly what honours “our men and boys”.

And in respect of that – a simple, transparent, honest question –
The main ventilation fan, or parts of it, being in an “non-restricted area” (as defined by the risk of an electrical system possibly being a source of ignition, that some components – like the brass bush seal between the drive shaft and the stopping [1] – could deemed safe be left out of its installation), if the ventilation fan, or parts of it, did ignite the first explosion, would not the cause of the explosion, in an “non-restricted area”, be an unexpected gas presence that should not have been there, but was, and whatever factor caused that was the actual cause of the disaster?

Beyond reasonable doubt –
66. Further testing continued and on 22 October 2010 the underground main fan came online and the surface fan switched to standby duty. Almost immediately the main fan suffered problems associated with the VSD power supply and other issues. Problems continued as the new model was installed in the same VSD cabinet but had a different thermal requirement, and to avoid rising temperatures tripping the power, the mine installed ducting to direct air over the VSD. An air conditioning unit was also ordered, but had not arrived at the time of the explosion. [1]
Could a factor, as simple as this air conditioning unit, be responsible for any main fan failure, and without an appointed ventilation-system supervisor, who was responsible? Who would be prosecuted, given too there would still be the need to explain excessive gas levels? – the same non-appointed ventilation-system supervisor?

Will any further investigation provide what a prosecution requires? Or does it offer Families only more false hope in kicking the can further down the mine?

This Government is good at that. After all, kicking the can down the road is about all it does.

  What a waste of time and money the proposed enormous expenditure to find out very little when he is right under their nose.
  
  The evidence required to prove a criminal case about an explosion possibly triggered by static electricity is impossible to gather. There are too many unknowns and each can becomes a defence. Wasting 10’s of millions more on uncertainty or ego scratching is sufficient to sack a govt.
  
  Isn’t Little hiding the fact that he was one who authorised this engineering disaster? They flew in the face of international practice for gas producing coal mines–they must be open or else.

    An explosion requires an explosive agent and an ignition. To claim a point of ignition to be responsible, answers only part of the question and anyone accused of an oversight or action that lead to the ignition could immediately ask, in defence, Explain why there would be the right amount of incendiary gas at that point – place and time – to be ignited.
    Where did “a substantial volume of methane” (Commission’s Report) come from?
    
    And how clever would an examiner need to be to determine the evidence of debris distribution to decide the direction of an explosion, where there has been up to four main explosions to fully or partly reconfigure the debris in each event, Then all of these patterns subject to a decade of mine interior exposure and of course you are seeking the first level of explosion evidence to determine fault?
    
    Can a Police camera lowered down a borehole into, say the B (middle) Roadway yield such evidence (direction of explosive force, but 1st, 2nd 3rd or whichever) especially if the bore emerging into the passage doesn’t cover with sandstone debris the very area they want to look at?
    
    Little should prevent those family advocates urging further entry, to not do themselves more mental harm and expend further soul-destroying time and money on such a doubtful project to seek a legal standard that should be beyond reasonable doubt.

      I’ve looked at this from the point of view of having to prepare a case for a prosecution of which I have had some experience.
      
      The problem is there is a plethora of diverse elements which could have caused an explosion in an environment which was waiting with a dangerous gas present. Electricity is very hard to control and humans can create it it unawares. Brush your hair and you may create it. Let a metal cart, say, brush against another in a simple touch, not necessarily physically hazardous but a microscopic spark can be created like with an old gas stove lighter. The spark may be too small to be seen but the gas molecules are still ignited and self propagate the initial event into a serious one then onto an explosion.
      
      A prosecutor needs facts to establish a criminal act and has a high standard of proof required. He must prove it “beyond a reasonable doubt”. They may find a suspicious damaged machine but when that exists in the midst of other possible explanations where’s the reasonable doubt?
      
      Hard to blame anyone. Equally hard to design and operate machines in an environment where inflammable gas is present. That may be possible on a micro scale in a lab setting but it’s knowingly risky in a production environment when the old enemy of the unseen static electricity or other exotic form is always there.
      
      I believe the Police should not be investigating the plant further. Blame is not always possible and not every adverse event can be avenged.
      
      I would not be against an Inquiry or prosecution based on the dangerous, foolish and proven hazardous, creating a closed mine over a known gas producing coal seam against international professional standards.

Given the $millions spent by NZTA and council transport agencies, this weekend’s road toll is a shocking indictment of the lobbyist mentality of JAG and friends over actual substance and delivery. In Auckland, substantial sums have been spent only to achieve nothing. The reality is, it is easy to spend money on doing sod all, but real results require more effort and more money. Notwithstanding, not reducing effective policing of the roads, and I am not referring to the revenue collection efforts of the police against “speeding” motorists does nothing other than line the pockets of government agencies.

  I’m sorry to hear of the Minister’s illness. I have been concerned about her performance as an MP, regretfully that has now been explained.
  
  Metastasising cancers are real hard to deal with as they can invade areas where surgery is not possible. Chemo is a useful mop-up but does not always catch the rogues. My late wife was taken out that way. It is also a very unpleasant process.
  
  Money is no cure and hope gets in the way of sense frequently. We have as good a treatment regimes under out Public Health system as anywhere in the world. Those who can afford it can do as they please but they have no certainty of a better outcome. NZ can be very pleased with our free superb health care here. We may have an occasional stumble and grumble but we have the right direction.
  
  I pray for the Minister’s speedy recovery.

      Look at the USA. NZ has Pharmac who check rigorously the free meds we get. I believe we get good value for our Public Monies and that most effective proven treatments are available.
      
      There will always be pressure for more and the latest. Which COVID treatment do you pick out of the smorgasbord on offer? Pharmac does that and sees that we do not overpay for effective treatments.

Couple of thoughts about the Hamilton to Auckland train.

1. The name “Te Huia” – where did that come from? Good old Wikipedia tells me that it is (or was) an extinct species of New Zealand wattlebird, endemic to the North Island of New Zealand. Similar to the bizarre name given to NZTA, I can’t help wondering why you would name a train after a bird – and an extinct one at that. Ominous portents?

2. Fares. According to the website, the trip from Frankton to Papakura costs $17.00 if you pay by cash, but only $12.20 if you pay with something called a Bee card. So obviously you’ll want to get this Bee card thing. But it doesn’t work on the Auckland metro network, so if you transfer at Papakura you’ll have to pay ANOTHER fare using the AT Hop card. Two different cards to maintain!!

Why, in a little place like NZ, could they not agree on one single card to use across the network? Apparently the Bee card can be used in Northland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay, Otago, Invercargill … in fact, it can be used in nine different regions in total. So why not include Auckland to make it simple? One travel card for the entire journey? I can only suppose there were vested interests or egos at play, both sides insisting their regional travel card absolutely HAD to be the one card to rule them all and neither side willing to budge.

So any commuters from Hamilton to Auckland will have to use two different travel cards, presumably maintaining a balance on both. You couldn’t make this up …

      MCos hasn’t. 51% of all public transport is in the Auckland region.
      
      Auckland’s patronage of PT is 2.5x higher than that of next largest centre Wellington.
      
      Auckland has already spent $100mill plus on its HOP system, the other regions have made nothing like that investment in their ticketing system.
      
      Project Next is years away and is being funded by NZTA, because the smaller regions can’t afford the investment.
      
      So, why should Auckland align itself with the smallest regions for its ticketing system?

  These are not return services – two trains run to Papakura in the morning, then I guess their crews sit around all day until they take the trains back in the evening. Imagine that for a workday!
  There is only one service each way on Saturday and none on Sunday.
  And you can’t get off at Pukekohe.
  So really, this can only benefit people who live in Hamilton or Huntly and need to go to Papakura in the morning and back in the evening.

Malcolm Turnbull was appointed to head the “net zero emissions and clean economy board“ to advise the NSW government on climate change. Think NSW equivalent of the Climate Change Commission.

So, in his first week in the job he calls for a moratorium on new coal mines or expansions in NSW. This is in the lead up to a by-election in the Hunter Valley, which is the main coal producing area of NSW. So, they sacked him, one week into a 5-year appointment.

I guess when they said they wanted to reduce NSW greenhouse emissions, they meant ‘reduce emissions but expand coal mining’. Too funny.
