Dispite throwing billions of dollars at problems when in Government’s of the past you would have thought Labour would have learnt from previous failures, but no they promised substantial investment and tried to ridicule the previous Government by lies and deciet with all they have left us with is nine years of neglect.
Wait times for Youth Mental Health Services balloon out under Labour dispite hugh investment.
Wait times for children and teenagers trying to access Mental Health Care has increased by two weeks since Labour became the Government in 2017 dispite billion-dollar promise to fix the ailing sector.

  They have learned that explaining and measuring outcomes are both hard and alsways put them in a bad light.
  
  So, instead, they measure spending. “We spent $500M more than National on X” looks good to the sort of people that vote for Labour (ie. generally those that take more out of the system than they put into the system).
  
  If it works for them then why do you consider it a mistake?
  
  PS: You’re already falling into their trap by using their word “invest” – not the real word “spend”.

“Colin,” responds the little boy.

“And what is your question, Colin?”

Just then, the bell rings for recess. Jacinda Ardern informs the kiddies that they will continue after recess.

When they resume Jacinda says, “OK, where were we? Oh, that’s right question time. Who has a question?” Another little boy puts up his hand. Jacinda points him out and asks him his name.

“Graham! ,” he responds.

I remember when

‘Use of covid tracer app won’t be compulsory for Australians, MOH clarifies.
So if an Australian with covid arrives here it could be very difficult to trace their daily movements.
They will be asked to download and use app but it won’t be enforced.

  Unless you envisage MoH officials following each Australian everywhere they go 24/7 while they are here, it would be completely impossible to monitor, let alone enforce, a compulsory requirement for them to use the tracer app while they are here.
  
  Why should they be treated differently from those of us already here, though?

So industrialists are all concerned that electricity spot prices have gone high and are cutting production. Inflows into hydro lakes are down so there is less water than usual to generate electricity, so spot prices have gone up. This is precisely what is supposed to happen, so I cannot see what all the fuss is about. These industrialists are big boys so should be managing their affairs better than that and should have proper contracts in place for much of their electricity requirements. They need to realise that running Huntly is much more expensive than running a hydro station.
Spot prices are like the medieval rack where the industrialist or knave is stretched until they reduce consumption or confess respectively.

  The problem with spot pricing is that it can change rapidly by a huge amount. Ten times increases in prices are reasonably common.
  
  Nor is it really so much about hydro vs coal. Spot pricing is a way to cut back on overall demand.

    Exactly. I mentioned the hydro v coal bit because this shows the spot price reflects the cost of the last dispatched generation which would be the most expensive. If Genesis did not have three ‘Rankine’ machines (ie old fashioned steam turbines) available for use, then the spot price would climb even higher. AFAIK the fourth ‘Rankine’ unit is a ‘boneyard’ for spare parts so is now unusable.
    If there is no more generation to dispatch then if demand is ‘inelastic’ the spot price would head towards infinity. Some regulatory authorities in USA etc have imposed spot price ‘caps’ to try and protect consumers against sky high spot prices, but this really defeats the purpose of spot prices.

      Coal is more expensive than hydro, but still a lot cheaper than OCGT.
      
      The real bugger is having spikes in demand rather than base demand and spot pricing can help to flatten that out.

        OCGT has low capital costs, but high running costs. So it has its place as ‘last resort’ generation. Hence the merit order for dispatching generation is:
        1. nuclear / geothermal/ solar/ wind.
        2. hydro.
        3. pumped storage output / battery / hydrogen (these rely on the electricity being generated in the first place).
        4. combined cycle (including gas turbine where there is strong demand for heat such as Fonterra factories or hospitals etc).
        5. coal /oil /gas fired steam turbine (eg Huntly Rankine units).
        6. OCGT (open cycle gas turbine) using gas or liquid fuel.
        7. Diesel.

    The property owner has a number of houses that she quite obviously can sell any time she likes, putting her tenants out on the street.
    A bit harsh, but that’s the way of the world.

      But she needs to get in fairly quick. The Government is going to have to ‘do something’ about displaced tenants and an obvious move is to further increase security of tenure. If a landlord is not prepared to continue under the new tax regime, she needs to sell up sooner rather than later.
      Anyway what she is doing is just what Jacinda and Robbo want. They have been complaining about property investors buying up properties at the expense of first home buyers. She has played ball with them (since first home buyers have a chance to buy her five properties) and now she is being pilloried. Left wingers and MSM are going to have to make up their minds on this one.

      No its not – its smart thinking, ensuring she sells up before the changes have a real impact and whilst property prices are still high. And as she notes, if we believe this is the last change this bunch of misfits will make to rental laws, we have a lot of disappointment coming.
      
      Robertson can wash his hands all he likes, just as Cindy has over the mental health (lack of) accountability. Me, I still remember her crocodile tears pre election over “the state of mental health” and what she would do. Shes done nothing, other than rule over a department that sets out to hide the truth.

    It sort of looks like these were structured the “normal” way – 40% equity, 60% loan – gives income of about zero (the desired result). Property looks after itself (no cash input) while owner waits for untaxed capital gain which is enhanced by the leverage of borrowed money.
    
    I have no problems with this – it is what it is – but any (other) kind of investment (than rental residential) where you borrow $1.50 for every $1 input has associated risks.
    
    Anyway if she sold two properties and reshuffled the debt – 60% equity and 40% loan – she would have three properties that looked after themselves with no tax to pay. Capital gain would not be as spectacular, but ….
    
    And the tax happens in four years time anyway … so the rent will be going up in anticipation of changes expected over the next few years. All fair enough I guess.

      Just working the sums backwards ….
      
      Loss of interest deductibility will cost her $25k. So if her tax rate is 33%, her interest bill is about $75k. At an interest rate of 3% that means her borrowings are about $2m give or take a bit. At 60% LVR that makes her total portfolio worth about $3m. Sounds about right for five rentals – give or take a bit.
      
      It is hard to imagine that the annual cap gain on this lot (normal 5-6% per year growth) would be much less than $150k.
      
      Basically the rules are changing over the next few years and now – if she just wants to have an investment that “washes its face” – she is a bit overgeared. She can deleverage a bit to make it happen or raise the rent by $150/week on each rental. She might as well do that now as later – why would you delay?
      
      Go figure. Not complicated.

      Agreed that that is the rational capitalist choice.
      
      But it’s also a massive distortion to our national capital allocation. A broad-based capital gains tax, set at a relatively low level like 15% or so, and offset with reductions in income tax, would help our economy. Politicians won’t touch that third rail, but the economics of it are simple.
      
      That said, as fewer and fewer property owners capture more and more gain at the expense of ever larger numbers of renters then the political pressure is going to increase.

        I would go along with CGT as long as the inflation component of the gain is nor taxed, and as long as gains are not subject to tax (currently gains on USA and other foreign shares, gold, bitcoin and anything else where IRD thinks there was an intention to purchase for resale).

Overheard a conversation yesterday between a two staff members, man and woman, in the mitre 10 garden area. The woman notes that someone hadn’t done something they were supposed to – guy responds with a ‘well he was too definitive wasn’t he’. Brilliant! Couldn’t stop myself letting out a little chuckle. Woman then laughs and says ‘You have to wonder how long it’ll be before some scumbag is up in court and uses too definitive as an excuse?’. Again I laughed!

He admits that the Min of Health doesn’t have good data on wait times.

IT systems across the DHBs and the Ministry of Health are not adequately linked up, so the Ministry does not carry out its own collection of data,” Little said.

And with such lousy IT services how will the Min of Health be able to measure the success or otherwise of its $1.9Bn investment in Mental Health?

  A teenage relative of mine, in Auckland, waits months in between mental health appointments – she had another ‘self-harm’ episode this week on Tuesday afternoon and they can fit her in, as an emergency case, in about 10 days time.
  
  Not good enough.

  Does anyone know any key performance measures that have actually improved under Labour and the Greens?

  It’s not just Mental Health services that have long wait times, it’s right across the health sector. Cardiologist wants me to have angiogram [stents need looking at] and the wait time at Waitakere Health is 4 to 6 months, got letter from them other day apologizing for longer than usual waiting time and included useful tips if my symptoms worsen – very helpful

    A lot of these backlogs were created by shutting down hospital services during the lockdown.
    
    Services get triaged and anyone considered lower risk will be pushed out significantly.
    
    I got bumped 4 months waiting for a treadmill test which takes less than half an hour and doesn’t need specialists (other than 3 minutes to review afterwards).. When I finally caught up with the cardiologist he was chewing his arm off in anger over the way things had been handled.

      And why did we shut down hospital services? Did we not trust the hospitals to manage their own workloads (defer people if increasing covid cases made it necessary, but otherwise carry on as normal)? Or did we think the cancers, etc. would stop growing during lockdown?

        They both shut down to handle their share of the 80,000 deaths, that rolled in the door.

  They count the spending as the success, not the actual outcomes.

I had a evening g&t session with my wife and in-laws last night. For back ground 3 of the 4 were in their mid seventies. The subject of hate came up. All 3 of us were poms from deprived parts of the uk . Me Glasgow and my wife and her parents from Hull.
The talk was generally around hate in its various forms and we agreed we have never in the past witnessed what we see now. The sad thing is most of it is manufactured. Yes in my Glasgow days Rangers supporters and Celtic supporters didn’t get on when drunk or at a match but the rest of the time they worked shoulder to shoulder.
Now look at little old NZ. The manufactured hate is amazing and getting worse. Maori are required to hate the white colonialists: women are required to hate men for being likely to be rapists; lesbians hate men in frocks; tenants hate landlords and anyone who owns a house; workers hate their rich prick bosses who give them jobs; the poor hate the rich; and the parties on the left hate everyone who votes for parties on the right.
My worry is how this ends and I am just pleased to know that at 74 I am unlikely to be around for the anarchy that will sometime engulf us. It’s not just an NZ problem but it certainly is obvious here. So much hate, so small a country, bit sad really.

        Increasing minimum wages does not solve the problem.
        Controls on housing do not work.

        In NZ the Rob Muldoon was probably the most divisive force in our society and the exact moment was the Dancing Cossack campaign ad when he labeled the government as communists. Very effectively too!
        Curiously his administration proved to be more socialist than the one it replaced or any since, by far.
        I would suggest because MMP has given minor parties, which tend to be more intense, seats in parliament, the main two parties have come closer together.

  But, am thinking a lot of this hate is politically motivated by activists and enabled by a generally lazy and soft media.
  In real life, especially out of the “look at me, I’m special’ circles in many of our big urban areas, life goes on.
  People get up every morning and go to work as normal and enjoy other activities in the weekend.
  It is the politicians and their media (especially on Twitter and similar) who are driving the hate in an effort to cling on to power and manipulate the people.

    Thanks Ladies and Gents. Been an ongoing saga for 6 months now with not following International conventions.
    
    Complaints laid against NZ with International Maritime Organisation and International Labour Organisation which are asking NZ to clarify having ratified.
    
    OIA requests to MBIE, MOH, Mfat, Maritime NZ, and all Government ministers including most MP’s. Complaint investigating currently with Ombudsman ( Finally).
    
    FWIW there are 100’s in same predicament working abroad as Seafarers. We are all in the same Boat ( pun intended).
    
    As stated previously, If i followed MIQ recommendations under Emg 2c Voucher I would of been detained in Myanmar. It took them to 7 days to respond and was declined anyway. Definately not the place or timing to be detained.

  Yes, I heard the blurb ‘Maori suffer more from crime’.
  Some expert then ended the radio segment with “we can only conclude this is because they are Maori”.
  Implication – the white supremacist system, again.
  
  However, I live in a former state house and near many current ‘Kainga Ora’ dwellings, and the reason Maori suffer more is pretty obvious.
  There is a visible MM presence about, and there are certain types who party, and lose their shit, and it is monotonously consistent who is screaming on the street at 1am “F–k you, B—itch!” and “Fuck you, C–t” rejoinders going back and forth.
  My elderly Maori neighbours have been here since the 1960s and said to me 10 years ago, ‘there is lot of trouble on the streets, and we don’t get involved’.
  And I have to think of a Maori workmate in another rough area (where police today are looking at houses where gunshots were reported in the wee hours), after they were robbed, and they say to me: {quote} “Bloody Maoris!”.
  Of course I said to them…..”Dat’s Waaaacist!” {sarc}.
  Yes, Maori do suffer more from crime. I can believe it.

I remember when

Interesting letter in the Gisborne Herald about possibilty of use of ‘perpetual leasehold’ to help reduce house prices for first home buyers.
Argument being that the price of the land is such a big percentage of the price.
While there are obvious difficulties in coming up with a workable scheme, does it point to an area worth investigating.

Someone messaged Kate Hawkesby around 5:52-ish this morning re the Hamilton to Auckland train.

Standing on the platform, ready to catch the train, and they counted a grand total of … six passengers. There were almost TWICE as many staff!! Eight Kiwirail staff and three Council security staff.

Of course, this is anecdotal and does beg some questions – for example, based on the time and the published timetable I assume this person was waiting at Rotokauri station (the second stop), so I wonder if it was six passengers waiting to catch the train at Rotokauri, and how many people had already got on at Frankton.

Suffice to say, I shall listen for further updates over the coming weeks with interest.

  Years ago I was living in Bangkok when the first Skytrain opened and later on when the Airport Link opened. In both cases it was a long time before commuters would park their cars and catch the train, but patronage slowly built up & now it’s sometimes difficult to get onto the platforms let alone into a carriage.
  I’m not suggesting the WaikatoWanderer will be standing room only in a year or two, but a few days in is way too soon to gleefully write the obituary.

    I lived there in 2007 (Rue Saint-Denis) and it was a dirty smelly shit hole then. Going to work in the mornings (Cergy Prefecture) on the train, the only white guy was moi. I was advised not to look at any of the other passengers as they would slit moi throat at the drop of a hat and the Gendarmerie wouldn’t lift a finger.
    Apart from that, it wasn’t too bad. The use of someone else’s cheque-book would have been nice as its bloody expensive the live there.

  Was in Paris 18 months ago. Lived there 20 years ago for 2 years. Utterly different place, I wouldn’t bother going back. Lyon much nicer, but still some places I wouldn’t wander, even though I’m reasonably fluent and a big lad.
  
  Pity. Used to be a wonderful restaurant in the 13th (I think from memory) called Boucherie. Literally a butchers where you chose from the carcass, the butcher did his work, handed you the cut, you wandered over to chef, discussed options and magic happened. A vegans nightmare. Loved it.

Maori don’t experience increased crime levels because they’re Maori, per se, they experience increased crime levels because they live around other (certain) Maori.

Everywhere in the world peoples who are over-represented in committing crimes victimise their own communities more than other communities.

It is exactly the same in the States – African-Americans suffer more crime proportionate to other communities – and with the majority of the offenders being African-American.

Please don’t get me wrong – the great majority of Maori are decent, law-abiding people just like the rest of us – but within Maoridom there is a small but growing minority who fuck it up for everyone else – and with other Maori being the hardest hit.

We’ve known this for decades. I ask again, where has Tim Hampton been that he thinks this is something new he has discovered?

I noticed recently in the news that you can now adopt a native Kiataia dog. The Northland Regional Council in partnership with DOC and the local Iwi are administrating the adoption scheme. During the period of the round-up of the dogs for adoption, a large portion of the Western side of Northland will be closed off to the general public. Currently, there is a proposal to form a trust to be called the Kaitaia Wild Dog Trust to streamline the population control required to ensure the long-term protection of this unique breed of dog.

Every time you travel somewhere, you watch on your return journey in case limits have been lowered while you were away.
Speed has again been highlighted as a reason for many of the accidents.
Just two points.
For those grossly exceeding the speed limit – the limit is immaterial.
How many were because people were trying to make up time, because limits were reduced earlier in the journey.

In both cases I don’t know what they mean. The first case I appreciate it is in good intent. some of its MPs are standing out, while others are missing in action…
Chris Bishop is certainly making a mark, but he should be – he is the party’s Covid-19 Response spokesman…but he has also been heavily involved in one of National’s major distractions – trying to get rid of Speaker Trevor Mallard. It is not going to happen, and it is wasting a lot of National’s time and effort.
…Simeon Brown has been good on police and corrections issues…without landing any telling blows.
…the mystery has been the lack of strong output from the two handed finance team of Shadow Treasurer Andrew Bayly and Shadow Finance spokesman Michael Woodhouse. ..The fact the economy is performing much better than many anticipated isn’t giving them much ammunition, but we are hearing very little alternative finance policy.
…Louise Upston and Todd McLay have also been fairly quiet for MPs with high rankings and important responsibilities…both of them have been short on policy alternatives…Simon Bridges has been noisy and combative, but seemingly for his own ends, not the party’s, while other senior MPs…appear not to be overly interested – the likes of Gerry Brownlee, Paul Goldsmith and Nick Smith…National is not really gaining ground on Labour, and its supporters must be wondering what the party is going to do to change its fortunes, aside from waiting for voters to eventually tire of Labour’s big Government approach. At this stage there’s not much sign of it.

All the things Michael Bassett got wrong in his noxious article

Bassett he tells us has made a number of false claims about NZ History by cherry picking and mis representing the past through the lenses of his so called credentials suggest .

An example is his false claim that Aotearoa, was only a recent creation. We learn however that the name Aotearoa is much, much older appearing in a song Governor Grey collected emblazoned on a flag in the Auckland War Memorial Museum from the Waikato wars. There were various other ways in which the name Aotearoa was in common usage outlined by Scott Hamilton.

The irony is that in the early colonial period it was Maoris who were described as New Zealanders by early settlers . Bassett suggests that New Zealand was the preferred name of the country but in the late 19th and early 20th century it was Maoriland that was the preferred name.

There is much more but an important reminder that Scott Hamilton’s analysis presents a much more complex picture regarding how we see ourselves including the name of our country.

      But for the vaccine to be effective in men it would have to be a proper infection, not a temporary contamination, no ? I mean, one isn’t immune to bacteria that colonise the skin and the immune system probably has no real way to interact with such.
      
      Men of course do get HPV, catching it through close encounters that do not have to include sexual intercourse. Not normally particularly problematic in males it seems, but vaccinating men would certainly help prevent the spread.

One wonders if Sergeant Burger realises the stupidity of his comments … a woman identifies her stolen e-bike being advertised and calls police for assistance in recovering it. They suggest she go and confirm it is her bike and then contact them to assist. She does that and makes an escape with the thief in hot pursuit, all the while she is trying to get the cops on the line to help.
Turns out the thief is known to police (surprise surprise) with a manslaughter conviction. So was Sergeant Burger suggesting they needed another crime to be committed before they could intervene?

        No – I don’t think that at all. We are all entitled to our views and they should be respected without trolling. My thought was more to the …. “and others”. We really don’t , as a “peer” group need to recognise those that bait without real input. I know that that is perhaps a little idealistic given my experience but time has also told me that that the thunder of silence can be quite devastating to those who only seek attention.

  Not long ago here the comment was made that these India arrivals are citizens (I was going to, but didn’t point out that Permanent Residents are also likely).
  But I was thinking, citizens or not, might it not make sense to stop movement from the highest risk countries?
  Sure, some people have a right to return to NZ: BUT NOT JUST NOW.
  Similar to a nuanced view that we can open up to Aussie, or Pacific Islands (or Taiwan, if we get out from under Xi’s coat tails), we should consider the risk profiles of regions and be more dynamic.
  
  This might be the first thing I agree with around the Government, and them surprising me with some bloody good sense:

  It does appear from other reports that the vaccines are significantly short of 100% effective, so it is quite possible that a vaccinated person can indeed still catch and harbour the virus. Not sure if the vaccination reduces the potential severity of the infection.

  Apparently at least 10% of us have dyslexia. Perhaps. But that will include people with all levels of dyslexia – from those that have been able to adjust and steer around it (such as myself) all the way over to those that are so impacted that they cannot use internet banking. I suspect that there are very few dyslexics who are that badly impacted and nowhere near the 10% of population mark.
  
  And piss off with this “different” bullshit. Blind people are not alternatively sighted. Dyslexia is a problem – not a difference.
  
  Differences are things that give advantages in some situations (eg. tall vs short, fat vs thin). There are no upsides to dyslexia.

    I thought it odd too. In a country of 5 million, that is 1 in 5 of us so disadvantaged we can’t do internet banking? And yet one bank claimed it stopped cheques because 99% of their customers didn’t use them any more. Something doesn’t add up.
    I did notice the comments beneath the article included many from people pointing out todays 80 & 90 plus year olds were not that old when internet banking began, so could have learned then if they chose to.

Bloody hell! 22 imported cases of covid today. 17 from India. When is this government going to get some balls and stop flights from India. This is bloody insane and I don’t want to hear all this nonsense about we can’t stop NZ citizens coming home. It is over a year now, genuine citizens are either already here or have dual citizenship. They can stay in India. If they’ve gone there on holiday that’s their problem, they need a massive fine for importing a deadly disease. Meanwhile the long suffering taxpayer continues to fund them in quarantine.
