Government set to spend less than promised on Mental Health writes Henry Cooke.
This after the Government flagship new Mental Health service is at under half of its expected budget as providers find it hard to access money promised two years ago out of the door.

Well how could anyone trust Labour on their promises after David Parker who holds the Attorney General Folder lied on Newshub yesterday morning when telling New Zealanders that it was those in Mental Health that were not being truthful.

  Basically, everything Labour said in 2017 has turned out to be a lie. And instead of doing no harm, everything has gotten worse. This is not surprising to political tragics who have observed the Labour Party closely since 2008. The surprising part is that 2/3rds of people surveyed think NZ is going in the right direction and would be two ticks Labour if an election were held tomorrow. Inexplicable.

  Agree Happy chappy. I would like this government and the next to re-examine the whole notion of “community” mental health and consider reopening or rebuilding the mental health institutions of the past. Obviously we don’t need to repeat past mistakes in the mental health institutions. However they are needed. Even here in Masterton we have people walking the streets causing trouble, who really are just not coping.
  
  Some people are no good in the community. They don’t cope in the community. In my opinion there is a need for more institutional care and I would like to see the government consider opening their wallets to provide more beds for those who are seriously mentally ill.

    Scott, the trouble with government run mental health facilities is the bad staff that prey on the vulnerable or don’t have the temperament to care for them. Good, professional and caring staff are sorely needed.

    That would certainly be the cheaper option. When I look at the time EDs devote to mental patients it’s a large part of their efforts. Add to that the increased crime then the option of being on the street doesn’t seems so good. This is not only for the general public but for the patients themselves who often stray into unsafe lives.

    Winter is coming. New variants are far more infectious and some may be more deadly to younger people. NZ languishes in the relegation zone of the OECD vaccination table – and way behind many so-called third world countries.
    Efficient vaccine rollout – including the flu vaccine – appears to be well beyond the capabilities of the government and MOH. If the new variants get a foothold we are in for a nasty six months or more. Even if we keep them out it’s hard to imagine that all adults that are willing will be vaccinated before the start of NEXT winter.

    Should community transmission occur in a high risk urban community, people would be delighted to know that they’re unable to be inoculated because all available stocks had been used to vaccinate a low risk rural community.

Few New Zealanders are aware of how close we are to electricity blackouts. As usual our feckless media will not take any steps to learn of the problems nor will they allow the Government to be blamed.

While it is unlikely there will be any immediate blackouts the situation is grim and the main culprit is lack of access to gas supplies caused by a publicity hungry Prime Minister turning off exploration so she could strut the international stage as the great green saviour. The lakes are low but they have been low before. Wholesale prices have spiked before but now they are staying up and are picked to stay up.

In the past we could use gas when the lakes were low. With no new investment in gas and existing gas supplies tight high cost imported coal is filling the gap and adding to the hiked wholesale cost of power.

Industries exposed to higher electricity prices are hurting and putting off staff. Wholesale prices will flow through into retail more quickly now and those on low incomes will have a tough winter.

So an ill-conceived bit of virtue signalling is an economic and environmental disaster. Unfortunately you will only hear it here, not in the MSM.

Our PM is about to strut the world stage again soon – standby for another similar ill-considered, equally cranky move on climate change.

    You are wrong again. The problem is at fields that need a rig to fix. Because there is no exploration on new fields, the rigs aren’t here. They need rigs and equipment from overseas. Why should the field owners pay megabucks to get equipment here in a hurry to save a government that slags off at them at every opportunity. It didn’t even have the coutesy to discuss with them what the effect of a ban would be.

    Mike, Permits where handed in after change of Government and Majors deemed it too high risk to do Business with NZinc.
    
    However like you say existing permits are still operational in taranaki but huge losses on permits outside of taranaki.
    Takes about 10 years on average from Seismic surveys to production and a huge capital outlay.
    
    Google permits handed in ( My internet is too slow) FWIW.
    
    The “Nuclear” momment has cost NZ dearly and mostly highly skilled engineering and future training.
    
    Oil and Gas technology is right up there with NASA in innovation FWIW.
    
    Not a good time to piss our Neibors off thats for sure.

    The reason for gas exploration is the expectation of future economic outcomes.
    So the problem isn’t the permits themselves but the government signals of future energy use direction and restrictions.
    The exploration is expensive – the rewards have to be apparent.

      The Executive Order was a green light to oil producers that USA was losing their independence so prices go up.

  Energy security should be top of priority of any government and more so in todays climate.
  With protectionism in world markets and supply lines shattered.
  Ask yourself this,
  
  How would NZ’ers and Businesses survive if oil got to 100$ bbl in next year or 2. Not unrealistic in at all.
  
  Look at Gas prices on worlds market and its increases.
  
  The issue with Oil and gas globally is control over pipelines.
  
  Take Russia/Europe. China and now Myanmar, Russia and Baltics. These can be turned off like a tap and especially so for Europe.
  So where does it leave NZ, Well we are at the Mercy of Singapore refinery prices and delivery by tanker.
  Why the hell we didnt nationalise and maintain Marsden Point I will never know as a strategic asset.
  
  Its really time to review the amount of energy input into manufacturing “Green power”, Offshore windmills, EV cars and even solar panels are very energy intensive to manufacture. This is lost on the ECO warriors and hence are mainly made / manufactured by Coal power plants in China along with dirty mining for Rare earths.
  
  On another note i believe the Climate commision should look at increases of CO2 due to Government mismangement. Take Shitty coal from Indo imported due to lack of Power generation and lack of Gas run Boilers in hospitals, Dairy factories and other large consumers. this should of been the main focus not banning Coal Boilers in 2030?
  
  The increase in Co2 by this government knows no bounds, Take infratstructure underspending and start adding all extra Co2 increases due to congestion, traffic etc .
  
  Unfortunately it would be relatively easy to do and keep a register of extra Co2 due to governments incompitence ( ie costs NZers more).
  This is what the climate commission should be focusing on.
  
  Hows that for my “Nuclear” moment.
  
  On a far more positive note, i sign of in indonesia on 13th, 5 days quarantine then transit S’pore 24th to NZ MIQ Covid incubators then 14 days. FWIW I would of had 7 PCr tests, 1 x Blood test and 2 mouth swabs. Go figure.

    Think oil prices–think Muldoon. The Arabs put their prices up by 3x and that nearly crippled us.
    
    Muldoon set out to see that NZ had the foreign exchange we needed; in the short term by controls and in the long term by “Think Big”. That brought us Maui gas fields and Tiwai Point where Aussie bauxite was converted to aluminium using NZ resources and sold for NZ dollars. Wisdom operated to set NZ up for the future.
    
    Undoing planning may undo NZ.

      Issues around global supply for Oil and gas , Read prices are,
      1. Straights of Hormus ( middle east oil)
      2 South China Sea security/nationalisation
      3. Caucauses, Azebeijan
      4. piracy in West Africa ( gulf of Guinea).
      5. Venuzuela and sanctions.
      
      Each and everyone has there own issues about energy security and it will only take one flare up for prices to double.
      
      On another note Norway is doing seabed mining for rare earths after having taken up the biggest % of EV ownership ( subsisdssion). Good on them. If you want EV then you must understand where all precious metals come from.
      NZ should be seriously looking at this too.
      
      You cant have your cake and eat it.

        I think EVs are a red herring. The end game is that most of the population will be dependent on busses and pushbikes. EVs will be for the wealthy, and those government and council employees that get gifted an FBT exempt work vehicle. To imagine that in 20 years every household will have one or two EVs charging in the garage is very fanciful.

        Nobody gets FBT work vehicles in government or council. That hasn’t existed since the 80s. There are still mayoral cars though, which are just owned by the council and driven by the mayor.
        
        The rest of your prediction fails to account for capitalism, which will make EVs very much a viable and common product.
        
        Also, a two car garage? Who even has one of those aside from people above 55 in deep suburbia?

        There are a lot of Council vehicles being driven around our area on weekend. They might be people on call but they have families in them.
        Almost all the new houses being built in Taupo and Kinloch (and there are hundreds in the last two years) have double garages. I don’t see why we are different to elsewhere. Remember most new housing is in deep suburbia, like Papamoa, Cambridge or Pokeno which are now more dormitory cities where people need two cars.

      Maui gas was not a product of “Think Big”. The (then) recently discovered Maui gas field was very large for NZ size. They needed something to hoover up the gas because there was a “take or pay” contract in place – pretty normal.
      
      So gummint went to Mobil and bought a gas-gasoline plant – built at Motonui. It was the first (and only) application of the technology anywhere in the world. Gas -> methanol -> petrol. It was totally uneconomic because the price of regular gasoline never got high enough to justify it. Also the efficiency sucked. So the methanol -> gasoline bit was turned off and the plant just made methanol for export. I don’t know how profitable that has been …
      
      So not really a triumph for “planning” ….

        These things were all underway in Muldoon’s time. NZ came close to not being able to import food. The lack of foreign exchange was the kick start of the “Think Big” program. That wasn’t rolled out in day.

      Maui was started under the Labour Government of 1972-1975.
      Production may not have started until Muldoon was in power but the agreement to develop the field had nothing to do with him.
      Indeed the then National Government basically sat on their hands from 1969, when the Maui field was discovered until 1972 when the Kirk Government was elected.

    Refineries are relatively inflexible with respect to what kind of crude they can process. That’s why the liquids from Pohokura etc are exported rather than going to MP.
    
    Having “our own” refinery would not do much for us – Marsden Point is pretty small by international standards and so faces higher operating costs. NZ Refining shares have been going backwards because these translate into lower refining margins (earnings) …

  Can’t disagree with you Tom toddy. Unfortunately our Prime Minister just needs to emote the right way and say the right buzzwords and the media and the people will fall into line. She just needs to talk about “carbon neutrality, greenhouse gases, electric cars by 2035, no oil and gas exploration, cycleways and rainbow crossings”.
  
  Unless the lights go out and the heat pumps won’t work and people are sitting in the cold and dark with their candles, they are just gonna vote for her. It’s going to take blackouts before people understand how dire the situation is.

It just doesn’t get hot enough. They are going to stuff our country good.     We humans are known as making things better. Coal is giving way to pellet and other kinds of boilers that are just as effective.
    
    Holding onto the past is a silly thing to do.

      But that’s just it – pellet boilers are NOT as effective. Biomass just doesn’t get hot enough. In the US when they were doing the biomass thing with trees etc, they had to cut up and add car tyres to the mixture to get the temperatures hot enough. To me, that sounds even worse than burning coal. ?

        Anecdata scare stories like that don’t help, they’re all isolated incidents which never seem to have a real source aside from someone hearing it somewhere.
        
        The reality is that companies like Fonterra are moving away from coal to a mixed fuel source with things like pellet and gas which reduce emissions. They’re still churning out what they need to, at the rate they need and at a cost that still enables them to be profitable.
        
        Society moves onto more modern solutions and thats not a bad thing.

        Fonterra are moving to biomass because the price of coal is being raised by all the carbon taxes. That is the only reason. Coal is a lot more efficient in boilers and has better energy density. From memory a truck load of coal needs two truckloads of the pellets or a trainload of trees to replace it. Biomass also has a lot more ash and the silica in the wood plays havoc with the boiler. Coal ash is good in concrete. Wood ash not. The biomass needs to be very dry to burn hot, so a lot of energy needed to dry it
        In general, the dairy factories only need steam at 5bg or lower, that is 150degC. Because of the thermodynamics, it isn’t that much harder with coal to have a higher pressure and steam at 400degC. That can then be passed through a letdown turbine to generate a lot of the site’s electricity.
        You can google a lot of this info if you look for a University that teaches mechanical engineering but they will be in lecture notes that assume a lot of pre-knowledge. .

  They are currently burning diesel at Whirinaki to generate electricity because they can’t get the gas. The coal burning at Huntly is going flat out. That will raise the spot price even higher, causing firms to shut down or reduce staff. And the DC is running south.
  If we don’t get a very wet late autumn, it is going to be a very bitter winter of discontent. But about now, it starts to be more snow than rain in the catchments and that needs the spring melt to release.
  I don’t think another Government committee or working group (which is their only “solution” ) will save them this time.

Genter still doesn’t know why. She told Stuff she could not understand why Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s office was not receptive to it, and why Ardern did not discuss it at Cabinet. The issues in it were well-documented, she says.

David Parker the Attorney General Minister spewing lies against those in Mental Health that say they were promised over half more than what has been spent in the Mental Health budget as providers find it hard to access money promised to years ago out of the door.
Chris Hipkins and the figure of how many that have been tested with those in the know suggesting it is under half of the figures than the Government and Chr Hipkins are
providing.
This is the top echelon of Labour Ministers that can’t tell the truth.

Interesting to note that Newshub has published an article by a Laura Revell stating that increasing CO2 levels in the atmosphere are unlikely to cause runaway global heating leading to life extinction.
My thoughts are that maybe the MSM are finally waking up to the hysteria caused by their continuing the human caused catastrophic global warming lie. Our children are particularly vulnerable and their trust being exploited by our educators is a crime.
Meanwhile my friend in London reports it snowed a week ago.

Women today compete in most of high impact sports, previously the domain of men only. Rugby, boxing, MMA, etc. But is it wise?
A new study has confirmed what was already known: after a concussion, women may be at heightened risk of lasting physical and mental symptoms.
The study of 2,000 concussion sufferers found that women were more likely than men to still have some symptoms one year later. The problems included fuzzy memory and difficulty concentrating, as well as headaches, dizziness or fatigue.
The reasons are unclear, but the study is not the first to find sex differences in concussion recovery. Many have found that on average, women improve more slowly post-concussion, regardless of what caused the injury.

Sound familar, Be interesting where NZ sits on next ” Best countries to do business” index? and “Least corruption”. Through a corporate lense these are highly valued overseas regarding Fund managers, ie Investment etc etc.

In Hawera this morning saw a Maori Party Mp with hangers on at service station,lol ,really high class people,such manners,not 1 thank you,such grasp of the english language,not.
Swear words by group as a whole just impressive,the best one was one large recovering overeater telling his Mrs to,”Get the f…… B……. to turn the F…….. pump on, and get something for the F……… Kids to eat.”
All this yelled across forecourt in front of children ,Public and me.
He was vacant as hell when I told him he should be glad he wasnt in my store because I would refuse to serve him.
Managed a F……..O……., love the leaders of our new nation.
