For me, ANZAC day is about remembering the reason for the sacrifices made by so many of our own. They didn’t die fighting for ‘our country’, but rather their lives were lost in a desperate struggle to defend liberty and democracy from the ambitions of a violent, megalomaniacal tyrant. Their efforts gifted New Zealand the social and economic vitality that my parents grew up with, and I in their footsteps.

Our present might have been very different had Hitler prevailed. His agenda to drive single-state, brutal authoritarian rule, augmented by cultivating racial hatred alongside array of social engineering would have led to a truly dystopian world.

Yet if anything, the last 12 months has shown me that the germ of lusting for unconstrained power still exists in our leaders. We have experienced the largest state-led assault on civil liberties in New Zealand’s history while the leader of the most libertarian opposition called for more state-mandated tracking of its citizens.

As we remember the fallen today, I call on our leaders – all of them, from Labour, National, ACT, Greens and Maori – to reflect on their commitment to the ideals for which our brave soldiers laid down their lives. We deserve more liberty, and less control. More democracy, and less state rule. More transparency, and fewer lies.

As rank-and-file New Zealanders we need take a leaf from the ANZAC’s book, and show more bravery in demanding our leaders uphold the ideals procured for us by spilled ANZAC blood.

  A respect for law wouldn’t go amiss. PM Ardern may be a cheer leader but she’s no executive–she’s basically mediocre with a lust for power. A young commie groupie.
  An army of sycophants do not make a govt, they make a mess of the nest. (Rotorua is also currently being destroyed as a tourist destination. )
  
  Allowing activists control is contrary to public law. Turning Police away from their duties leads us where? We now have race relations being returned to the 1840’s. The Treaty is being rejected and tribes jockeying for positions. Their written history, recorded in diverse ways, shows who had taken land from another and those ancient feuds are not forgotten. The Govt has meddled where it had no concern but to keep the peace and destroyed the harmony we previously had.
  Pakeha NZ will not accept Maori governance. Individual tribes will not accept it either.
  
  It is time for this govt to return NZ to the people. They do not understand their task, the duty of care they owe and have demonstrated they cannot carry out the functions of caretakers of the State. The do not respect the law that was long fought for and that the Parliament is sovereign over the spending of taxes taken from the people. That right is not the govt’s of the day, whatever its majority. The rights to spend are those of Parliament as a Parliament of the whole. An English King paid his dues for not accepting that.
  
  To abandon the Westminster constitutional conventions needs at least a referendum. Otherwise it is effectively making NZ into a defacto republic.
  The abandonment of the Treaty also requires a referendum and probably the consent of HM the Queen.

  BTW, my great uncle who briefly fought in WWII called himself an ANZAC. The title was apparently seen as a badge of honour.

  This sounds very much like Globalism and the liberal world order in the year 2021, so was fighting WW2 the best thing we could have done? The distance afforded by the passage of years can lead to re-examination. As Patton said “we fought the wrong enemy.” To be fair, I’d actually rather be “speaking German” right now than having transgenderism and anti-White racism forced down my throat.

  Do people really fight in the name of such abstractions? I’m pretty sure most soldiers went to war mostly for concrete reasons like protecting their families and friends, and, by extension, the nation.

    My father volunteered for the NZ Army at the start of WWII, was on a troop ship somewhere on 1-Jan 1940 and returned home at the end of 1945.
    I asked him once why young guys went off to war.
    He told me – Adventure.

      My father was “sent”” to WW2. He wasnt interested in adventure as he had a wife & 2 young babies to consider.
      Many young men went for the adventure and to escape the bad conditions that prevailed at the end of the depression.
      I joined up(1960s) at 17 and did my 12 year stint. A great period of my life where I learnt about mateship and personal resilience
      Like most of my compatriots the service looked like an interesting life and the opportunity to learn a trade and get paid.
      NONE of my compatriots saw it as a patriotic duty or serving their country, remember the Vietnam conflict was on. Tho a few of my compatriots wanted to serve in Vietnam for the adventure..
      
      On talking over my military experiences with my father. He opined that during his army time, the enthusiasm and “patriotism” got rinsed out after their first deployment, when mates were shot or bombed. All they were interested in was surviving and going home. Defence of Kiwis liberty, freedom and democracy wasnt a remote consideration.
      
      So yes I take time for reflection on this special memorial day and my friends long gone. Not for their patriotism, but for their focus on doing the best that they could

    When did the cost of a minimum wage increase ever mention or include the add-ons.
    We always hear the broad outline of these disputes without what the total arguments and figures are.
    The government is already surreptitiously using the restriction of migrant workers to try to achieve pay rises.

  That is one issue. IMO bus drivers should be paid more than minimum wage in the light of the responsibilities they have, and this would probably line up with the so called ‘living wage’. The other issue concerns employment agreements. At present the union has separate employment agreements with NZ Bus for Auckland and Wellington services. Union wants a combined agreement (presumably with the best of both worlds) and NZ Bus does not.
  Interestingly Paul Snelgrove and his HR manager daughter have successfully avoided their Tranzit and Tranzurban drivers being unionised. Hence some Wellington services (eg #1 Island Bay) kept running during the strike.
  The strike is also indirectly aimed at the WRC and Government – to provide more public transport subsidies to meet higher wages.
  One would have thought that the current Labour Government would have had the skills and experience to deal with this sort of situation without the need for strikes.

      I can’t understand either why a bus driver given his responsibilities, warrants earning the same money a law student gets by being a part time transient in the hospitality industry, as a waitress. Which raises another set of questions[why aren’t they committing to part time work in the legal industry?].
      
      I’m all for the free markets but not when it leads to reliance on rebates, subsidies, tax breaks and all the rest of what could be described as nothing less than a welfare system, for all workers. That’s not a market place of any sort, it’s organised labour.

        The “living wage” was a union move out of the UK. They commissioned a Priest from the Anglican Social Centre in Lower Hutt to work out the numbers. They commented on how their were two living wages, one for Auckland about $6/hr higher and the rest of the country. The lower figure was chose for their campaigns as being more palatable.

On this solemn day we do indeed remember them and lest we forget and do on. But I have no doubts ( as before on KB ) that ANZAC day will be desecrated with the usual faux patriotism and excuse and some insane sabre rattling. Like, pick a fight with China. Not sure where one would stage a Gallipoli styled landing.? Somewhere near the mouth of the Yangtze river or some such?.

The day also reminds us of the at times the delicate relationship we have with Turkey, our hosts at Gallipoli commemorations. I’m thinking of the Armenian Genocide which if any NZ foreign minister dared raise with the Turks would easily pull the plug on this august annual event at Anzac cove even though now interrupted by the Covid Pandemic. Such is the complexity and delicacy of relationships among nations as we experience with China at the moment,

One can indeed sympathize with our and any other Foreign relations minster as to the dilemmas whenconduction foreign policy.

  Disagree. Sometimes the solution to intentional issues is simple. Like when Neville Chamberlain should have stood up to Hitler. The overriding value for guiding foreign policy should be “do the right thing”. This is some Ardern and Mahuta seem to have forgotten

    History rubbishes Chamberlain but a sober analysis shows that Britain needed the time the Munich agreement bought to rearm. Even then it was a close run thing. If they had gone to war in 1938, Britain would have lost.

      How would Britain have lost? They just enact Strategic Plan Victory 100% chance — cut the oil supply lines from Venezuela to Germany.
      
      Germany would have struggled to defeat Czechoslovakia – 3 months was the estimate without Russian support.
      
      With Russian support, Germany had a near 100% chance of defeat with no oil from Venezuela, no oil from Russia, and no oil from Britain’s ally Romania.
      
      Meanwhile France would have marched into the Rhineland, and told her ally Poland to march into Berlin.

But on Newshub Nation yesterday she impressively showed what a slippery slug she is, avoiding answering Tova’s “genocide of the Uyghurs” questions for the whole programme.   To be fair, she (Ardern, and her government) hasn’t done anything since taking power in 2017 on the matter.
  
  Basically she keeps quiet and only brings things up in private, as suggested by Professor Brady, due to China’s political influence on us.
  
  This from the CFR in 2017: “New Zealand has been slower to develop a clear response. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has reportedly refused to comment on the prospect of the country’s spy agency launching a probe into Chinese political influence in New Zealand. About 20% of the population is under 16 and will not be vaccinated. Another 20% are either unlikely to, or definitely will not, be vaccinated. Add in a few more for those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, and the 70% needed for herd immunity is impossible. https://www.health.govt.nz/system/files/documents/pages/covid-19-vaccine-research-insights-march-2021.pdf

Australia to date has administered about 2 million jabs. We are at 140,000.
So when are we going to be able to open our borders if the current zero tolerance strategy remains? Can at least one journalist ask such a simple question?

  The virus is tricky don’t you know?
  
  Therefore it will get through our borders sometime. Quite possibly in the next year before we even get close to 50% vaccination. When it does strike it will be a rampant spreader and the deaths saved to date and hospital services protected will have only been deferred.
  
  If it’s not Covid it will be the deferred flu.
  
  You cannot immunise partly.

  I think you are mistaken on a number of fronts.
  
  Firstly, stage 3 clinical trials of the vaccine in children are in progress.

  Secondly, vaccine hesitancy is mostly from young people. In Israel 99 percent of over 80s have been vaccinated and 90 percent of over 60s. Daily life in Israel is now back to normal despite only 60 percent of the population being fully vaccinated.
  
  If the New Zealand government ever gets its act together I would expect to see the same trends here.

      Pfizer tested down to 16 yo in their original trial. They also have a 12-17 trial and are going to ask FDA in ~a month for paediatric admin to 12.
      
      Moderna 12 – 17 https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04649151
      
      Moderna 6 mo – <12 years: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04796896
      
      Both trials have a priori interim analyses built in, and if efficacy and safety are shown they will stop early. Its highly likely that the 12-17 year trial will finish Sept or so. The 6 month – 12 year trial is in 3 arms descending, 6-11, 2-5 and 6 months – 23 months. Takes a lot longer – trail close date is June 2023, but again a priori design included interim analyses, expect the first arm to report out ~Xmas for interim.

        PC do you know how they go about doing clinical trials on ones as young as 6 months? I can’t imagine for a moment I’d allow either of my two kids to be part of such trials unless their life were in danger and this was the only chance of a cure – which clearly isn’t the case.

        @Loddenthinks… Yes. It is a standard call for a clinical trial though clinical (think Drs, public health nurses etc) for parents to sign up. Children under 18 cannot consent, only their parents/caregivers can consent – adn that is how the children are enrolled, with parental/major adult caregiver consent.**
        
        ** Children that are old enough (generally kicks in around 7-8, but definitely for ALL over 12 years old) may also be asked to “assent”. This means that they are old enough in years and/or have shown the cognitive ability to understand what they’re signing up for, and they individually “assent” separate to their parent’s consent.
        
        Finally, yes Lodden; Peds trials take longer and are slower to report, because comparatively fewer parents, caregivers etc will take the chance.
        
        I work in general Drug metabolism and Pharmacokinetics, but I have a sub-specialization ini pregnancy and paediatrics… I am well aware of all of these issues, hence Paeds trials are so hard to do, take longer etc. Even so… the uptake for the vaccine trials from parents and children/tweens/teenagers themselves for COVID has been massive.

  I am still bewildered by the assumption that getting the vaccine will stop the pandemic.
  
  It is an amelioration jab to reduce the severity of Covid!! It does not stop you catching or transmitting the virus.
  
  Recent figures show that incidence of covid infection is in the order of 1 in 13,000 something.
  So with NZs numbers of jabs todate that could mean(given we had Covid in the community) 10 cases.

    No. In 80 to 90 percent of cases the vaccine WILL stop people catching or transmitting the virus. For those who do catch the disease severe illness will be unlikely as you say.
    
    Vaccines will end the pandemic because covid, in vaccinated people, will either be non existent or a mild illness. For those who are not vaccinated, some will get covid and become seriously ill and die. But that is a choice they made.

I read with some interest a brief article in yesterday’s Dom Post. It was about the planned cycleway between Petone and Ngauranga.
Recently the DomPost has been enthusiastically pushing the Labour Party line that Transmission Gulley is an economic disaster. The price is apparently up to $1250 million for the 27 kms of multilane divided highway on very difficult terrain. That works out at $46 million / km.
The story in the paper says that the 5 meter wide cycleway will now cost $190 million for 4.5 km. That is $42 million / km!
The paper sees this as being entirely reasonable. What is it going to have? A gold plated pathway? For a hundred or so cyclists per day?
Where is the enquiry into this looming disaster?

  The cycleway is presumably where it has always been, where I have watched the orca at play.
  
  What about the earthquake fault line that runs along there? The cyclists are closer to the sea than the adjacent motorway and will be in the drink first.
  
  Wellington does need alternative safe routes in and out of that city. It got its shape from earthquakes with serious changes back in the 1850’s.

    The current cycleway is between the railway line, which is on the seaward side, and the motorway. 90% of the cyclists don’t, and won’t use it. They almost always ride on the road.
    The new cycleway is going to be on the other side of the railway line next to the sea. I expect that it will be closed due to the sea washing a bit of it out once or twice a year. It won’t matter though as I don’t expect the cyclists to use it anyway. No doubt they will insist that it be swept at least once a day to get rid of any stones that mar its surface. That seems to be their main moan about the current option.

      Alwyn… The current cycleway is covered regularly in glass and bits of netal that come off vehicles …
      
      Riding in the currebt cycle way is a tecipe for lots of puncture repairs. As a walking track its ok… For bikes yeah nah..
      
      But spending millions on building a new cycle way is stupud. The motorway shoulder is perfect for cycling.. Its wide and nicely surfaced…

        Why does the cycleway have the problem and not the shoulder of the highway? It isn’t as if cars travel on the verge of the road so I would have expected it to have as much, or more, of that sort of rubbish rather than it being further away on the existing cycle track.
        If that is all the problem is why not just put a fairly fine mesh fence between the road and the existing track? Say a half centimeter mesh on a 1.5 meter high fence?

        Put another way, perhaps Hutt & Wgtn Councils could organise a daily sweeping. Would be a bit cheaper, eh.
        
        Although, as I’m sure you know, racing cyclists will never use the lane provided as slower cyclists will impede their progress. No chance of the peleton waiting for a passing lane.

I see on stuff.co.nz 5 minutes in the first 20 news items only 2 are related to ANZAC Day.

“Story #7” is basically Prince William being forced to eat ANZAC biscuits by his media handlers, then it takes to “Story #20” for a perspective called Lest We Forget. You could argue that Stuffed almost have forgotten.

I wonder if this would be the case on their site on Waitangi Day, or would be we lambasted with viewpoint and analysis about Maoridoom and being victims by systemic racism 100 years ago plaguing them today.
