Well isn’t it funny when it gets close to the budget annoucements and you have MP’s like Andrew Little making calls about , $400million wholes in Phamac, so let’s face the have known the problem for years now and Andrew Little when Leader of the opposition crowed and blustered about National underfunding it then.
Now all we have heard for three and a half years now from Labour the Government is 9 years of neglect and lack of investment and they have poured billions of dollars into fixing it without notable results. I could name plenty of instances of wasted taxpayers money but I will mention one and that is what all the working groups you have funded and ignored, in total more than one hundred at considerable cost to the taxpayers and then rejected their advice, that alone would probably pay for the $ 400 million need by Pharmac.

Yesterday the 6th Labour government renamed NZ Forestry as Te Uru Rākau – New Zealand Forest Service.

FFS, talk about the understatement of the year. It’s very easy spending other peoples money and not even accounting for it.

  The motorist tried to give him the slip and avoided stopping for a while despite a number of chances to safely pull in .
  
  Eventually he did stop and the Cop came up to his window and said ” Look it’s been a long day, my shift is nearly over , I’ve already issued my quota of tickets , so if you can give me a reasonable excuse for not stopping , I’ll let you off with a verbal warning”

  The immigration system is supposed to be geared towards those that can be of value to NZ. If you’re going to be a burden why would the country want or need you. If you only have one leg the system doesn’t care if you are (for example) a psychiatrist which is a profession on the skills shortage list.

      Talking as an immigrant… There is cultural blend where you “embrace all sides of (your) their identity” and there is “continue(ing) to advocate for and identify with non-New Zealanders as opposed to their fellow New Zealanders”
      I have blended our cultures, taking the best of my home country and thrown out all the crap I came here to escape. I also know a fair number of other immigrants from different countries who have done the same, and see them selves as New Zealanders who just weren’t born here. Similarly my kids all see themselves as Kiwis and we all use NZ Passports exclusively having given up our rights to use the passport from our country of birth.
      I’m NEVER treated as a second class citizen, but I know other immigrants who are, and the reason is they have one foot in NZ and one in their country of birth. You simply can’t be loyal to two countries, if someone came here to escape some awful country with terrible law/culture then have the respect for your new home to throw out the crap and embrace the good stuff, or maybe they should re-evaluate their choices.
      There is nothing about xenophobia in this, and throwing the word out is just a way of squashing dissent, like homophobia or racist. Being accepted in NZ is about accepting you are now a Kiwi, and if you can’t do that you’ll never be accepted.

IMHO its a case of when not if China takes military action to take control of Taiwan. Some questions.

1. Does the Government have a policy and a plan on how they will react.

2. Do NZ businesses who trade with China have a plan.

If not then we are unprepared for a forseeable event and will all suffer the consequences.

    US is in decline. The recent fake election showed this. NZ’s response long term would be better aligned with Japan.
    
    At some point soon any business or political figure who is pro CCP is a quisling. Thinking of that fucking awful visit to China by Simon Bridges a few years ago. That should not happen in the future.

  You misunderstand the military hardware:
  a). Taiwan has
  b). The US has in the general area
  c), The threat this has to China’s economic wellbeing.
  
  Sea based invasions are almost always characterized by significant casualties. Something China won’t want. The Taiwanese will fight to the last person with advanced western military hardware. Significant US military assistance is only days away from Guam, South Korea and Japan. This would include B2 bombers and nuclear Subs that could hit mainland Chinese military targets without detection at ease. In short you would also have to target US bases in Guam, South Korea and Japan at the same time. Therefore you also go to war with Japan, Korea the US and probably by extension the balance of SE Asia and the West (LOL Little Aotearoa would probably be the exception)
  
  Then you have the trade implications – you think Chinese goods would get anywhere near Europe, North America, East Asia and their allies…..That would fuck the Chinese and world economy overnight.
  
  I’m guessing it won’t happen in our lifetime and if it does it will be non violent. China, unlike Russia plays a long game. They’ll wait till the West/Taiwan can’t resist. They aren’t stupid and they won’t risk WW3 over Taiwan.

    Look at what Nato did in Bosinia back in ’95.
    
    But also think about what it would do to China trade if the USA parked a couple of nuclear powered subs off the coast and told the world that any in coming ship will be disabled. Game over.

      Taiwan has 280 fighter jets, 1160 tanks, 26 frigates and destroyers, four submarines, and 1.6 million people in its military reserve.

Pity if something should happen to it.” And if someone in Taiwan’s military should see Taipei flattened, tens or even hundreds of thousands of casualties, and his/her entire home island stomped under the Xiboot, that someone might take some unilateral action accordingly…

  China will not “invade” Taiwan nor take any military action against them. It does not need to. It will wear them down gradually, year after year as it did in HK. They are not concerned about how long it takes – they play a long game.
  
  One of the first things I learned on going to China over 40 years ago was an expression they have – “the long eye”. It is self explanatory and is applied in politics, business and life in general. A particular play may last generations.
  
  We are such an “I want it and I want it now” society, impatient, lacking strategic cunning we have little appreciation of how China operates.

It’s always good to hear of a gang member wanting to turn their life around and help others do the same. But this bit I found curious: “It’s been two years since he left jail — his longest stint of freedom since becoming an adult —… He has made his first mortgage payment on his first house with help from his mum, and also bought a motorbike and car with his own wages.”

Two years is the longest time he’s been out of jail as an adult, he has five children and he is working as a social worker, yet he has managed to save the deposit for a house, as well as buying a motorbike and a car.

I look forward to article on how he managed that.

    He [William Yan] was granted citizenship in 2008 by Shane Jones, then a Minister in the Labour government, against the advice of Internal Affairs who believed Yan did not meet the “good character” requirements.
    
    This was because Yan had two identities, was wanted for arrest in China and was under investigation by Immigration New Zealand.
    
    But Jones, now a candidate for New Zealand First in the upcoming election, granted citizenship anyway on humanitarian grounds.
    
    This led to accusations of political bias as Yan had forged links with a number of MPs, particularly in Labour, who lobbied in support of his citizenship bid.
    
    The link between NZ politicians and political parties and China needs a thorough airing.

  As Brown says, this response sums up what a lot of frontline officers are feeling and thinking. Labour has gone soft on crime, and soft on gangs in particular. The policing of gangs seems to be far more about appeasement than enforcement.
  
  After all, it’s not as though gun crime, especially that involving gang members, has been eliminated. The Police should not rest until all the guns have been taken from the gangs, and the only referrals gang members should be receiving should be to the Police cells and the courts.

Considering Government’s target to vaccinate in excess of one million of the population by the end of June, is it not time they advised us how people will be notified – mail or phone – and in particular how will they determine the group that has underlying conditions that warrant any priority .
Will DHB staff, who seem to be handling vaccinations, have access to GP and Health Centre records, and as my file (for example) is a quite thick volume and not all on computer, will someone pretend to spend any time reading any of it?
There are more than a few little mysteries with the whole vaccination plan, with no one really explaining anything that would give those intended to be vaccinated any confidence in the system.

Now border and health workers are mostly complete (//) the fastest way to roll out is to give it to all the keen people first.   I received a pamphlet in my letterbox yesterday “Our Covid-19 vaccination plan”. I am happy to share all the detail with you so that you will know how and when you’ll be contacted.
  
  Groups 1 and 2 are most at risk so are vaccinated first, then group 3 and finally group 4.
  
  Groups 1 and 2 before June 2021 “will be invited by their local health provider or employer. There’s no need to call anyone. We’ll contact you.”
  
  Group 3 from May 2021 and Group 4 from July 2021 “We’ll let you know when to take action. Keep an eye out for more information. We will have a range of places where you can get vaccinated, including community clinics, marae, pop-up venues and pharmacies. We’ll let you know when these are ready in your area.”

I don’t know about anyone else, but I cannot get my head around how India can truthfully publish the number of new Covid cases every day in the way they do.
I see the trend as :
Monday – 150,000 new cases
Tuesday – 190,000 new cases
Wednesday – 240,000 new cases
, , , ,
Let alone tracking the number of deaths !

It was bad enough in a tiny country like NZ to confirm xxx new cases on a daily basis, but how in hell can India achieve such a feat in so little time ?

It rather smells of premeditated ‘fixing’ of the numbers, to apply maximum frightners to the population/s

    27000 does not stack up. The number must be more like 50,000 per day.
    
    Indian population is 1.3 billion or so.
    Life expectancy in India is 69 years.
    1.3bn/69/365 = 51000 deaths per day average.
    
    Add 3000 deaths from CV19 to 51000 only adds 6% more should not break the system.
    
    If they really are dying like flies as the media is making out then the numbers are not just 3000 deaths per day.

        Isn’t that pretty much exactly what I said?
        
        I said: “If they really are dying like flies as the media is making out then the numbers are not just 3000 deaths per day.”
        
        If the media reports are correct that many are dying, then the official numbers of around 3000 are way too low.
        
        If there is a background death rate of 50,000 (or even 27,000) then you’d need a massive increase to make it noticeable. You’d hardly notice a 6% or 10% increase. That would add one extra body to burn out of 10, so everyone just shift up a bit.
        
        If the funeral burning places are really massively overwhelmed then the numbers must be HUGE.
        
        Perhaps it is only a few places (eg. near hospitals) that are overwhelmed?

      It could be that there are now many more people seeking hospital treatment, whereas most of the 51,000 simply died at home knowing there was nothing as simple as Oxygen to save them. Hence the already underfunded health system being overwhelmed by what seems a small increase in deaths. For every death there will be a lot of extremely ill and moderately ill people in the hospital queue.

      India’s death rate is 1%. World death rate 2%
      Phillipines have nearly double the death rate in percentage of infections, the world average.
      Press will never report this as hasn’t got the fear factor.
      The figures are only as good as the countries report them, China sitting on 4 deaths in a year is almost to good to believe.
      Just more fear porn being peddled.
      Only figure that matters is total deaths which they don’t seem to lie about, it is rarely reported.

Christchurch ratepayers faced with Mafia-level rates from the Christchurch City Council should note the council’s plans almost to play angel investor.

The council’s hype unit, Christchurch NZ, claims to have generated $41.5 million in GDP during 2019-2020, almost certainly an inflated guess. We’re always getting GDP guesses. Conference X will generate 5 zillion dollars, sports clash Y will bring in 7 zillion.

The council unit’s pushing for a budget of $15.9 million over the next three years. It claims about 50 businesses are in “active discussions” about moving to Christchurch. Just what the $15.9 million is destined for should be spelled out. The suspicion is it will be largely subsidies.

Christchurch has locked up its long-held investments in the Lyttelton Port Company, the local power lines provider, and Christchurch Airport (which is talking of expanding to Central Otago). Then there’s its secretive investment in a jet-engine reconditioning plant.

Christchurch compares poorly with the country’s stand-out local body investor, the Bay of Plenty Regional council, which has done so well with its controlling stake in the Stock Exchange-listed Port of Tauranga.

Is the Christchurch’s Business NZ unit run by a business wizard? The chief executive, Joanna Norris, was previously editor of the Christchurch Press newspaper, which had been falling in paid subscriptions for years. With the rest of Stuff, it’s now on a survival drip-feed from taxpayers.

Judge David Robinson in the Dunedin District Court sentenced Sweeney to 200 hours of community work and ordered reparation of $1000. Judge Robinson rejected the police suggestion to ban Sweeney from driving because it would “set him up to fail”.

The teenager who was with Sweeney during the poaching was sentenced in the Youth Court.

Ardern’s government is emptying jails and putting crims, often gang members, up in hotels and motels.

Ardern is creating a race-based, separatist justice system .and she has greatly tightened restrictions on law-abiding gun owners. What path is she taking us on?

    I came to think that some Maori have a very acquiescent attitude to ill health.
    Or should I say ‘fatalistic’?
    They would listen, and agree to plans of action/treatment/medication, but it was very common to find that they had not collected the prescription, or if they had, didn’t take the meds as prescribed. Diet advice was a waste of time – they would agree that some aspect of their diet was bad for them, but then continue with it. Often they would be agreeing to being treated, but would defer to the local medical man, who would have an alternative treatment to offer.
    And they may or may not keep appointments.
    I don’t think that the proposed new Health Authority will have any better outcomes, but no doubt will find a way to blame European medicine for its failures.

  Early death from an unhealthy lifestyle is not a matter of race–it may be cultural. The ethnic groups involved have a duty to their own to adopt better practices or suffer the consequences.
  “Maori Health” won’t fix it, this is not a money or a deep cultural spiritual matter. It is also not going through a machine like in a butchery and being trimmed to size. Attitudes and will are involved. I’ve had to learn to adapt to avoid complications from diabetes and other future weight related problems which took out my father. The worst part was confronting a permanent change in lifestyle. The idea was worse than the actuality which only took a few weeks.

    And dying 7 years earlier has nothing to do with the pigmentation colour in the skin. It all has to do with what goes into the mouth, and exercise, which is preceded by attitude.
    
    Throwing them more handouts and spending money on the ambulances at the bottom of the cliff will do nothing to change attitudes. As you state, self-responsibility is the only answer. It does not require money, as healthy food and exercise has to be way cheaper than junk food, excess alcohol, smoking, etc.

      There certainly ARE genetic factors to health and it is not just lifestyle choices. Maori might be predisposed to shorter lives.
      
      But add a layer of poor lifestyle choices and they make that much worse for themselves.
      
      Only individuals can sort these things out for themselves.
      
      I’m very tall. The cardiologist tells me that will tend to knock 5 to 10 years off my life. The only way to mitigate some of that is through lifestyle choices. I can’t pay someone else to exercise on my behalf which I sit on the couch and hoover down the chips.
      
      I can’t do some exercise on behalf of a Maori person. I can’t eat better on behalf of a Maori person. Only individuals can take care of themselves.
      
      These new Maori spend-ups will not improve Maori health. All they will do is make another broreaucracy to plunder.

  So some parents smacked their children when they were little, say 2-5 years old, and fewer smack them now they’re grown, say 17-20 years old. Tells you nothing, except parents smack young kids and not so much the older kids who could thump them back.

Yesterday I had the good fortune to accompany my 2 young grandsons to MOTAT (Museum of Transport and Technology). Their young minds were greatly stimulated and educated with a good balance of things they could participate in, ride on and see the older items and how these items have developed over years. Full marks to the people running MOTAT, they are doing a great service to the people of New Zealand.
Now what spoiled it for me greatly was the writing of the descriptions that accompanied the exhibits. Someone has seen fit to add new words alongside the well known names, like wheels and the machine parts, named by the inventers in years gone by. These new words must have been invented recently, because Maori had no previous knowledge of wheels and machines. So why is this being done and only succeeding in bastardising a perfectly wonderful language that we currently understand and enjoy?
The only place I can see where the Maori language could be used in a museum on transport would be waterborne vehicles. But as there are no examples of watercraft at MOTAT, there is absolutely no reason for this second class language is added in order to barstardize a first class language.
I can’t think of the word, or a phrase, that is currently used to describe this terrible new barstardization of our language. Can anyone enlighten me?

  It is two lanes in the direction that the truck was going. After viewing the video multiple times it is obvious that the truck driver did this on purpose. He signaled so the truck driver knew there was someone on the left but pulled into the lane nevertheless. The truck driver could easily have waited till it was safe to do so.
  
  For whatever reason he almost killed some people and deserves to be prosecuted.
  
  Truck drivers are notoriously underpaid and are known to drive more hours than they should to make a decent income. Still no excuse to nearly kill other people.

Here is a novel idea, if they set up these schools as wanted by the school principals they could maybe call them Charter Schools.

  On the one hand the National Party is not in favour of the Maori Health Authority, labeling it separatism.
  On the other they were in favour of Charter Schools a number of which were setup by Maori Trusts to aid struggling students.

    Not the same thing at all.
    The equivalent would be a Maori Ministry of Education, and a separate non-Maori Ministry of Education.
    Charter schools are more like alternative or private health facilities, which exist alongside the state run hospitals.

How much of a threat are the Maori caucus and the Maori Party to Jacinda? There seems to be plenty of Maori gains over and above working group recommendations and Labour Party manifesto: Council Wards, Separate Health, extra push for Te Reo, Education Histories. There is more behind all these initiatives than Jacinda finding a new desire to assist Maori, by Maori. Could this be the true reason why Labour retained the Waka Jumping law?

This morning ( 1am ) I heard the NewstalkZB news.
( Don’t ask, I am getting on a bit ).
There was an item related to roads.
In it there were two references to “Waka Kotahi” but NO mention of “NZ” or “NZTA”.
It was as if the English language equivalent did not exist. This is just surreptitious and bloody underhand. Anyone unfamiliar with NZ terminology would not have a clue about “waka kotahi”.
And quite frankly, they would be bloody lucky.

  Yes, this is something I have noticed. The name “Waka Kotahi” is most definitely being pushed hard, if not to replace NZTA then at the very least to relegate it to second-class. And while I generally don’t have much time for conspiracy theories (no, really!), it’s pretty obvious that the various media outlets – web-based, TV, radio, and print – have been very clearly instructed to use “Waka Kotahi” as the main name, or the ONLY name.
  
  Many of the articles I read now tend to use both names once at the beginning (basically acknowledging that many people are not at all familiar with what the hell “Waka Kotahi” actually IS), and from then on only “Waka Kotahi” is used. One article in the local rag recently did just this – both names were used once, right at the start, and from then on only “Waka Kotahi” was used, for something like twelve occurrences as I recall. Another article didn’t mention NZTA once.
  
  And of course, the logo has been changed to reflect this. Less than two years ago the logo used to have “NZ Transport Agency” in big type, followed by “Waka Kotahi” underneath and in smaller type. Now it has been reversed – “Waka Kotahi” is presented as the main name in large type, with “NZ Transport Agency” underneath in smaller type.
  
  I recently saw a comment that “naming and renaming should have the aim of clarity and recognition.” Does anybody really think “Waka Kotahi” has achieved this?
