  The AstraZeneca Ro vax. NZ gubermint were hot for this vax before they quietly dropped it.
  
  The gubermint ordered millions of doses:
  
  The Government will purchase COVID-19 vaccines from pharmaceutical companies AstraZeneca and Novavax, meaning every New Zealander will be able to be vaccinated, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced today.
  
  The new agreements secure access to 7.6 million doses from AstraZeneca – enough for 3.8 million people, and 10.72 million doses from Novavax– enough for 5.36 million people. Both vaccines require two doses to be administered.

  But then they dropped it. Is Pfizer any different? Well the Ro vax are experiments and cant sue the manufacturer. Time will tell. 2 to 3 years maybe. Normally takes at least 5 years for vaccines to cycle through the experiment phase.

    Good details of the vaccine-initiated clotting problems, why they’re different from other clots, and the money paragraph:
    
    These case series show that a number of previously healthy young people have so far been killed by the Astra-Zeneca vaccine. Considering their age and underlying health status, the risk to them from covid-19 itself was infinitesimal. For healthy young people it is not at all clear that the potential benefits from the covid-19 vaccines outweigh the potential harms.
    
    That doesn’t just go for the Astra-Zeneca vaccine. It goes for all the vaccines. It is quite possible that new revelations will arrive over the coming months concerning the other vaccines too. Now would be a good time for governments to change vaccination strategies, halt all plans to vaccinate healthy young people, and instead only vaccinate those who are at substantial risk of serious outcomes from covid-19.
    
    It is unethical to vaccinate healthy young people until it is clear that the benefits to them outweigh the harms. At the present point in time, that is not at all clear.
    
    Healthy people are predominantly taking vaccines because they’re been frightened into doing so by an orchestrated info-terror campaign waged by political leaders, aided and abetted by scientists and global media.

    The Pfizer one is different.
    
    The Astra-Zeneca and the Johnson & Johnson (the so-called Biden vaccine as it was the late comer released after Biden took office) are both traditional types vaccines, and both prone to blood clotting issues.
    
    The Pfizer and the other one (I forget it’s name) are the new mRNA type vaccines.

    The presenter’s death is not the first linked to the AstraZeneca jab. The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has catalogued more than 676,000 adverse reactions to the vaccine, ranging in severity from the mildly uncomfortable to the life-threatening. Some 806 recipients have died after reporting a reaction, but the MHRA cautions that many of these recipients may have died of old age or other causes.
    
    The blood clots linked to the vaccine, known as cerebral venous sinus thromboses, have affected 332 people and killed 58 in the UK, according to analysis by the BBC.
    
    As the first reports of these rare blood clots surfaced earlier this year, more than a dozen European countries suspended the rollout of the AstraZeneca vaccine. Denmark went a step further in April and permanently dropped the vaccine. In the UK, people under 40 are being advised to avail themselves of another vaccine instead, but the MHRA insists the benefits of the controversial shot outweigh the risks.

    No TC, just a life. Should not vaccine victims at least be given a blood test beforehand to determine their likelihood of fatal clotting? Her doctor would probably have relevant records. I know blood clots can occur to anyone at any time but if this vaccine actually encourages clotting in certain people then this is startling.

      There are various conditions etc. that may make one especially vulnerable to serious side effects of various vaccines. Well-known stuff for a long-time.
      But there is never, to my knowledge, any screening for this kind of thing; rather, there is active promotion of the idea that everyone should take them all, no matter if you are sick or not.

    Just when you think things can’t get worse then they do. It was not enough for this government to enact abortion up until birth, lethal injections for the elderly, a separate segregated health service for Maori people only, they have to bring in critical race theory to the classroom and the teachers.
    
    Critical race theory is based on the guilt of white people, making them believe their history is terrible and they should find a Maori person to apologise to. They should be utterly ashamed of themselves and their past and no apology is sufficient. They need to spend the rest of their lives atoning for their white privilege and the sins of their ancestors.
    
    It has elements of Christianity but no redemption and no forgiveness, just eternal repentance. What a shame that this is being foisted on our children.
    
    I have always believed that New Zealanders can be proud of their race relations, the Treaty of Waitangi and the fairness with which we treat people no matter what their race.

      Definition of privilege: “Privilege comes from the Latin privilegium, meaning a law for just one person, a benefit enjoyed by an individual or group beyond what is available to others. Any right, immunity, or benefit enjoyed only by a person or group beyond the advantages of most.”
      The woke are using the term ‘privilege’ incorrectly in NZ context as all NZers have access to good free education and health. It is an advantage for children of all colours coming from loving supportive families with ambition but there is no privilege given to any group regarding health or education.
      Also you never hear of Asian privilege when it comes to success but they certainly have high grades in NZ schools, they work hard in the same system as all other NZers.

        Steve, I don’t think Maori history has been ignored for a hundred years.
        
        The excellent book by Sir Peter Buck (if I were writing in Maori, Te Rangi Hiroa ) was published three-quarters of a century ago.
        
        From the colonist side, Goldie and Lindauer, though neither was Maori, recorded much of Maori life visually. Maori now have very fine artists, but it was going to take decades to flourish in new-to-them world art.
        
        Even Governor Grey, now being downgraded in the Great History Revision, took a scholarly interest in Maori language and culture.
        
        The Encyclopedia of NZ records of Grey:
        
        He was the author of Ko nga mahinga a nga tupuna Maori (the deeds of the Maori ancestors) (London, 1854); Ko nga moteatea, me nga hakirara o nga Maori (the songs, chants and poetry of the Maori) (Wellington, 1853); Ko nga waiata Maori (the songs of the Maori) (prepared in Cape Town, 1857); and Ko nga whakapepeha me nga whakaahuareka a nga tipuna o Aotea-roa (proverbial and popular sayings of the ancestors of the New Zealand race) (Cape Town and London, 1857).
        
        Given that Maori had no written language and their history was oral, Grey likely did Maori culture a service in this.
        
        Regardless it’s untrue to say Maori history was “ignored, or glossed over.”

        I need to know a lot more than what an (unimpressive, in my view) opposition politician has stumbled across, and released to a right-wing commentator. What was actually going on; what was the context?
        
        Teaching “white privilege”, whatever that actually means, will go nowhere. If it ever gets off the ground, it will simply consist of students being informed that society has traditionally been dominated by pākehā, but is now increasingly becoming more equal — something like that. It’s not going to be an entirely new subject, like calculus, or whatever.
        
        Paul Goldsmith is rarking up the (currently impotent) right-wingers, and, right on cue, Kiwibloggers are falling for it.
        
        It’s hilarious. Seeing the Rightoids go out of their minds, on a daily basis, is one of the reasons I spend so much time here.

        Jack, I’m aware of the voluminous writings, to do with Māori, since the 19th century. My comment was to do with the teaching of Māori history, including from a Māori perspective, in our schools.
        
        I am older than the prime minister’s father. My memory of being taught things Māori consists of little more than being informed that the “Māori wars” occurred, and of what life was like in a Māori pā (e.g., growing food; weaving). That is clearly going to change, whether any of us like it or not, and so it should.
        
        (I don’t often agree with you, Jack, but I do enjoy being a beneficiary of your education and general knowledge.)

        I want to know more about the circumstances behind the audio “clip”. For example, who the heck is Michelle Johansson? Has Minister Hipkins confirmed that what she said, is official government policy? Is it being, or intended to be, rolled out across the entire school system?
        
        Anything this government puts in place can be reversed by the next government. As I said to you on Wednesday morning, relax. The end of the world is not nigh. Life as we know it will continue. Guaranteed.

But If race matters, then I’m curious as to where she got her Swedish last name. In her TED talk she says her mother is a first generation migrant from Tonga, but never talks of her father or his heritage. If we are dividing people up good and bad by race then shouldn’t we name all our racial lineage. She then goes on to talk about colonialism in NZ classrooms and it’s impact on Pacifica kids. But her mother is from Tonga which was never formally colonised and came here to this colonised nation for a better life. As a recent migrant family to NZ is she also a coloniser?   Seymour noted that the direction was that ‘colourblindness’ (i.e treating children as individuals, not by their group identity) was some sort of racism too.
  
  You must not see a person, nor an individual. You MUST see a Maori, and a victim, or else Dat’s Waaaacist.
  
  This sort of thinking is dubious, potentially dangerous/unhelpful. It should not become doctrine.

  What I don’t understand is why, if most of the population is vaccinated, and those that aren’t either aren’t at risk, being children, or have chosen not to be vaccinated, the country can’t just get on with it.       An argument from an “authority” is not required, just the statistics and rational thought, including the history of past approaches to illnesses/viruses with similar statistics, which seem totally divorced from the approach being taken with respect to Covid.       I could talk until I’m blue in the face, but every person has to make up their own minds.
      
      And for the last time I’m a DM/PK that’s been publishing on antiviral drugs and their mechanisms of action (as well as various other drug mechanisms) for 20+ years.         Rush to make and test vaccines like we’ve never seen before with public/private partnerships as well as private/private partnerships. Normally crap, but this this situation, a net good. Anyhow fastest vaccines ever produced diced, and 2/4 of them look very safe and effective so far!
        
        Nobody thought vax would arrive within 2-3 year… then new vax arrives in 12-15 months, in most of the western world…
        
        mRNA vax are safe and effective (This is Moderna or Pfizer), IMHO take those two.
        
        Your kids and younger people *can* get sick, but side FX of moderna or Pfizer are so much lower than COVID sickness, even though their probability is low.

I have seen Ashley Bloomfield and Chris Hipkins get the jab on tv but I can’t recall if Jacinda has had it done publicly or privately.

Isn’t it always good for team morale when the leader sets the example like Scott Morrison did in Aussie?

    We are in the period “before the middle of 2021” so one would expect the PM to be vacinated shortly.
    I am surprised that the PM has not been vacinated already, as given the vacination relucatance there is in the wider population getting the Jab would go some way to changing the mind of the relucatant. Leading from the front you could say.
    Personally I think the PM is taking the Lord Melchett approach of leading from the front but being 20 miles behind the trenches.

    The Prof with the Pink Shirt says:
    1) The vaccine won’t provide herd immunity.
    2) Won’t give you protection from catching the virus.
    3) Won’t mean you can’t spread the virus.
    
    He says you will still need to wear a mask on the bus even if you’re vaccinated.
    
    So maybe all the elderly getting vaccinated won’t help?
    
    On top of that Pfizers are saying it is a short-lived vaccine and you’ll maybe need another vaccination in 6 months to a year.
    
    Given all the disclaimers I’m struggling to get the point of the vaccination.

    NB: This is just for developing the strategy – more funds available to actually execute the strategy.

  I Googled the number, and it’s a vaccine agency acting for the UK NHS.
  
  Apparently, they ask questions, why you won’t have the jab, confirm your details, address, and so on. Then put you on a list, of course.

    Quite. Why isn’t it just tracked via your health system number?
    
    The reason is probably due to the new $38 million system they fired up with no competitive bids )and thus no extra input). My understanding (which may be incorrect) is that the solution is based on the salesforce package.
    
    Salesforce might seem to make little sense because it is designed to keep track of sales leads and track sales etc in an organisation, but the with some lateral thinking it makes sense:
    Sales lead = person getting vaccinated
    Sales agent = person giving vaccination.
    
    Salesforce has a whole lot of features like scheduling meetings (times to get vaccinated), follow ups, reminders etc etc All the things a vaccination system needs.
    
    Salesforce can also be “skinned” to look like a stand alone application.
    
    So due to the nature of the way the project has been handled it would seem:
    1) Everyone needs another login.
    2) It is not properly integrated with the current medical system.
    3) Some friends made some big coin.

Labour have fallen 3 polls in a row (this time 3%) and Jessica Much trying to paint this as good for them.
Labour Party: 46% (down 3%)
National Party: 29% (up 2%)
ACT: 9% (up 1%)
Green Party: 8% (down 1%)
Most post budget polls, give the govt. of the day a boost.
Jessica..this has gone against trend
National, with almost NO coverage have clawed back 2%
and ACT 1% and the leftie parties have TUMBLED by 4% ie nearly 5 seats in parliament
To take a Jessica Much approach to reading these things.
Wonder what the next poll will say?

So I heard today that COVID vaccines for Group 3 are starting. I qualify because of a health condition.

I have searched high and low for how to register for a shot. All I found was this:

“,,,,please don’t contact us or your general practice, we’ll contact you when it’s your turn.”

It is like a system designed by 12 year olds. So they are just going to “contact” people. Do they have my contact details? Do they know my health condition that makes me eligible?

I asked my GP and he said “I have no idea”.

Everybody (well nearly everybody) has a GP who knows which Group you come under. Why didn’t they just run this programme through GPs.

If any of you can shed any light on all this I would be grateful. I would quite like to travel to Taiwan be the end of the year and I expect that it will be a case of no entry to Taiwan (or probably most places) if you are not vaccinated.

  The health system databases can already generate risk profiles for you based on age and come preexisting condition codes etc (similar to what they use for generating the vulnerable patient status that gets you “free” flu vaccinations).
  
  All the info is there, but the CV vaccination system seems to be stand alone. Still, it should be close to trivial to extract a list of people per Group and plug that into the new system.
  
  I would argue that anyone that does not have a GP is probably low risk. ie. If you’re on heart meds etc, chances are you have a GP.

  After 30minutes waiting on the vaccine phone number I was finally able to get an appointment.
  Short version of a long story is the West Auckland booking system is a total clusterfuck (what a surprise) with category 3 all booked out to July but they will not take bookings past the end of June. The woman on the phone was telling me a big problem is masses of walk-ins getting the jab and stuffing it all up. Even some people with appointments are missing out as a result.
  Well… hell, why not tell them to FUCK OFF until they have an appointment?
  In the end I managed to get an appointment on the North Shore for July.

    The big problem is the way they’re doing it. It all comes down to logistics.
    
    If they want to vaccinate lots of people then there is no point stuffing about making 10 minute appointments per person.
    
    What they need is a more “free flow” system where they’re vaccinating one a minute (or better).

She has been trying to get her family to NZ for 15 months, and has now given up.

The kicker, she is a mental health worker. This government could not organise anything. It’s overseeing a public service that, at management level, is less than useless.

Our media is complicit in hiding it.

Two totally incompatible objectives. How can they be so blatantly manipulative?

  Whenever we have a hot day in Ekatahuna it is “the hottest day on record for Aotearoa”. If there are no hot days in NZ they go searching for a hot spot somewhere on the ocean where no one can experience it directly. When all that fails they fire up their inaccurate climate prediction models. It’s all to keep us anxiously alarmed.

And anyone suggesting it was from a lab could be called a dangerous conspiracy theory, deranged Trump or Bannon supporter, kicked off facebook, and fact checked. So it’s not so much who’s right or who’s wrong. It’s the shutting down of discussion and saying the science is settled and smearing and cancelling people to make their point, when it’s clearly not settled, and then changing that science with the political wind.

    Well, I’m sure you mean well but kind of tricky for the CCP to be behind the “Spanish” flu as the CCP did not exist as such at the time.
    
    Flu is a bit different to Covid type viruses too; the flu virus has 8 distinct parts to its genome and those parts can be swapped, mixed and matched amongst variants to create near instantly viable potentially novel (to humans) variants. Often though the most infectious and damaging variants filter through one of the species that also carries the flu virus in various variants – most commonly birds (domesticated ones such as hens and ducks although it can also be carried by other migrating species) and pigs. Hence the “bird flu” and “swine flu” nomenclature you’ll often see.
    
    Corona viruses are a single RNA strand (readily mutate but much less often to a viable virus), and there are a lot of varieties, many resident in bats, but also found in a number of other animals. Typically though not necessarily if the “dose” is high enough (as for the mine workers exposed in 2012 for example – in an environment saturated with virus particles enough could infect even if not at all well adapted to do so) these viruses need to transition through an animal that has receptors more similar to human ones to be infectious. SARS infected humans via Civet Cats, and MERS through camels. SARS2 has not yet an identified intermediary species – initially thought to be pangolins this seems very unlikely as the CV’s in pangolins is to distant in genome from COVID-19 to be a likely candidate.
    
    Given the affinity COVID-19 has for the human ACE-2 receptor, it does seem that the most likely intermediate species is in fact humanised mice- and that points directly to GOF experiments in the Wuhan lab.
    
    There is a lot yet to be discovered about the origin, and it is important. If this did originate in the lab as a result of an accidental (most likely) escape then the re is a very real risk that future GOF research will lead to another pandemic at some time. Very stringent controls should no doubt be placed on such research worldwide.
    
    Given all that, there is some possibility that should at least be explored that the Chinese (represented by the CCP) exploited and politicised this disease. For example instituting strict local lockdowns and local travel restrictions yet allowing international flights, the videos of people collapsing in the streets (not seen anywhere else), and the complete obfuscation directly and through dependent persons and organisations of so much existing data on the research carried out at Wuhan; surely demands at least some investigation.

Further to the post on WWC rates yesterday I say the local body rates system is broken. Its a 18th Century system not fit for the 21st Century.
The problem is the way rates are levied.
An example. Two owner occupied properties side by side levied the same rates.
In one property we have a couple and their two young adult children. Total household income of the 4 of them say $200,000 ( and thats being modest)
Next to them we have a single older person who has live there for 40 plus years. They are on Nat Super and have modest income from savings lets say total gross income $40,000.

So both households pay the same rates but one consumes 4 times the Council services and has 5 times the income to service the rates.
That in anyones money cannot be regarded as an equitable system.

And spare me the BULLSHIT about the older person selling up.

If yoy think that you are a Communist and Socialist and an ARSEHOLE to book.

  In Bangkok there are no rates.
  We have owned house in three different housing developments.
  The second one of maybe three hundred middle class houses had security, swimming pool, gym, landscaping, street lighting, rubbish collection all paid for by a levy of the owners. Except half the people didn’t pay.
  On the face of it quite a good arrangement, but in practice far from perfect.

  NY is on a similar trajectory but is even more vulnerable because it is less reliant on physical manufacturing businesses.
  
  Physical businesses are hard to move, but in this age of internet meetings etc, much of the professional services provided in NY can be moved to anywhere.
  
  These highly mobile professionals pay the most taxes and are the most motivated to leave. As they leave, NY will slump quickly.

RNZ runs an article entitled, “Fears new kauri dieback funding will be chewed up by bureaucracy”, and states

“Northland Regional councillor Jack Craw said he was grateful the funding was allocated but it was “manifestly inadequate”.

The bulk of the money should go to community conservation groups and iwi who did the grassroots and “treeroots” work, he said.”

But what RNZ doesn’t disclose is that the Tree Council submitted a proposal by Jack Craw via a parliamentary submission , on Kauri Dieback and he already has a group planned for just this purpose.

Jack’s parliamentary submission said “A Trust (Te Wao Kauri Trust ) has been formed for the purpose of managing Kauri Dieback Disease, Community Engagement, and all operational functions…” a number of Auckland Council elected staff are named and Jack is the interim CE. They are requesting funding $2 million pa, multiple staff, research staff and have “access” to full biosecurity powers – power of inspection of private land, general powers, and power to examine organisms. Before their second phase accessing international funding and farming Kauri on 50 year rotation in line with the UN FAO with Iwi.

Like He Puapua this is an insight into the money and power transfers that are happening behind the scenes. RNZ acts as their useful idiot promoting Jacks claims that community groups will make the best use of the money without stating that actually Jack has already planned a trust for just that purpose.

Singer’s an Aussie academic in America, but it would have been interesting if he had known enough about NZ politics to ask Ryan whether she was talking about Maori, and if so how were they blocked from bringing forward ideas?

Observing from California. The riots last year were primarily about how more black lives are taken at the hands of the cops. It didn’t splinter off into a big white privilege issue though some groups tried to do this.
My kids go to school and learn some of the curriculum through a Black History month. As well they might. It’s a big chunk of American history and they learn about important Black historical figures. Nation of immigrants. They also learn a good chunk of Spanish and Mexican and Native Indian history.
One approach is teaching and the other, the ‘white privilege’ approach is flawed dogma and indoctrination.

    A rather weak idea around historical impact across many generations and taken to full retard as a non-negotiable and inflexible universal truth.
    
    The other part that shows is is BULLSHIT, in the context of education, is that Asians and even Indians, must have greater white privilege than even white NZers.
    After all, they do better than even Pakeha students in schooling and achievements, so clearer they are even more evil and privileged than whitey!
    
    Success can’t of course be linked to family upbringing, motivation, personal aspiration, ambition or ability? (or inversely, lack thereof).

A video has been taken down from the internet for “inciting violence against Maori”.

We don’t know what was in it, and never will, but if was inciting violence against Maori taking it down was the right thing to do.

I have a question, though, from the Herald report of this:

“Internet NZ Maori chief advisor Raniera Albert praised the Maori activists and Maori in the technology community who brought the video to the attention of the appropriate authorities.”

Fair enough.

But,

“He said tangata whenua play a vital role in the everyday life of Aotearoa New Zealand.

“We are the identity of Aotearoa,” Albert said.

The “identity” of Aotearoa?

What if someone taking an anti-racism stand described white New Zealanders as the “identity of New Zealand?”

I remember when

Bid to restore Lake Horowhenua with new wetland project: RNZ
The Government has agreed to buy a dairy farm next to Lake Horowhenua to construct a wetland and help restore the polluted lake.
The government has put $11.2 million towards the project, some of which went towards buying the 142 hectare farm for $6.7m.
So can we take it that $4.5m is going towards the new wetland project in some form.
A sort of killing two birds with one stone hit.
In fact three, if we include the desire for more wetlands, less dairy farms and restoration of Lake Horowhenua.

In New Zealand we usually crow about success of local-origin material on YouTube.

Not so much though about the Wellerman song, a New Zealand folk song from whaling days in the deep South Island.

The main video on Wellerman is now up to 36 million views, and there other versions with 14 million, 6.8 million, and 3.6 million views.

Versions have been put by artists as various as the Irish Rovers, the Vienna Boys’ Choirs and the US Navy Band.

Now dance versions are popping up including line dance, a German dance lesson, and zumba dance-fitness routine.

The Wellerman song is about the Weller brothers’ Otago shore whaling station base and local ships, which the Wellers supported from Sydney. One of the ships was called the Joseph Weller.

“Wellerman come” may be a translation of English spoken on the southern coast at the time. “Maun” in Scots, and earlier in northern English, means must.

“Weller maun come” may have been what the whaling sailors sang about the next arrival of the supply ship, the Joseph Weller.

Dunedin Ngai Tahu leader Edward Ellison is the great-great-grandson of the younger Weller brother, Edward, who married a Maori. He’s interviewed here:
