Here is an exemplary TDS masterpiece from The Guardian.

Nine months after the election he comprehensively lost, the spectre of Donald Trump – darkly menacing, subversive and apparently immune from prosecution – continues to cast a shadow over US democracy and America’s global standing, distorting policy and poisoning political life. How can this be? Why is this horror movie still running?

Trumpism, like other fascist variants, is a disease, a blight – a noxious far-right populist-nationalist miasma that taints and rots all it touches. Older Europeans share a folk memory of fascism. But too many Americans just don’t get it. The will to stamp out this sickness before it returns in more virulent form is alarmingly lacking.

This lyrical shock-prose continues unabated, and in a manner that suggests the author writes while engaged in some form of Astral Projection.

The TDS faithful, our very own Batman included, will be crying out in ecstasy while reaching for handfuls of fresh tissues.

      I’d love an explanation about the ‘half.’ (I would have thought if half were cheated the whole country would have been cheated.)
      
      67% (or so) voted in the Presidential election. Trump got 46.8% of the 67%. I reckon about 32% of the eligible voters wanted him. So who is the half of the USA population blatantly cheated?

  I guess the Guardian writer is not familiar with the restrictions the US constitution places on government, especially on Administrative government, nor how those are being knowingly breached by the President and a branch of government called the CDC which has stepped far outside its boundaries in dealing with the non-eviction legislation enforcement.

  Then there’s the open cooperation between the Administration and private sector companies like Facebook, Twitter et al on restricting speech. That’s actually the textbook definition of Fascism, if the Guardian cared to look.

New Zealand – Power ’emergency ‘ leads to outages in the Waikato.
Is this the start of the problems associated with Jacina Ardern’s captains calling the environment and will we have a prolem like ths in years to come, as we were warned this would be a problem for years to come if Labours policy was put in place.
Transpowers New Zealand GM of operations Steven Jay says demand for electricity is at a all time high.
“Insufficient Generation has been made available to meet demand and manage a secure system,” Jay said.
”
“As a result, Transpower has asked the distribution Companies to reduce the load at 8.30pm , thousands of properties were affected by the outage on the Wel Networks website, just before 9.00pm Wel Networks released a statement saying power is now back on.”
“Due to insufficient Generation to meet New Zealand electricity load demands , all electricity distribution business were instructed by Transpower earlier this evening ( The National Grid Operator) to reduce the load on our network with immediate effect”.
Wel Network said this was a New Zealand- emergency we have just been authorized to restore power to affected areas.

  Up here in Rodney we were fine, but even if we had lost power we would cope. Neither my wife nor I would be particularly worried if we couldn’t watch TV for one night, and luckily we have a wood fire to keep us warm and a gas hob to cook on. 🙂 Stick THAT in your electric heatpump and electric stove.

        I know of a few people in the suburbs using wood fires. Was staying with a mate this weekend, and admiring the heat coming off it, and the pleasure of watching ‘Caveman TV’ with a beer in hand.

    With no warning at all, mid-evening, this posed problems and risks for oldies living alone like me and anyone with vulnerable family members.
    My gas doesn’t work without an electric starter. Like many others I went to bed where I could stay warm.
    I just hope people managed to charge their EV’s so they could get to work this morning.

      And power cut for a very cold day and frosty evening no less….I am in Hamilton, so we weren’t cut off, but I was running the heat pump AND the gas to warm the house.
      I have been told the government is looking to ban new gas connections in a few years time, so the idea of being in a dark house without any electrically sourced heat does not appeal. Plenty of ice this morning.
      I would like to see urgent action around security of power supply; perhaps they can park the gay conversion therapy bill and find some time to unpick this issue instead?

      My comment was intended mostly as an observation that when the Government start banning wood fires and gas appliances because “they’re BAAAD”, they would be well advised to first make sure that we have a reliable electricity infrastructure. Not start worrying about our electricity supply AFTER they decide to start outlawing any of the alternatives and putting the entire country’s eggs in one basket.

        We have wood fires and we love collecting and chopping firewood and live the warmth of a fire, much better than the whirring of a heat pump, and on the odd occasion we get home late and don’t put a fire on we have a diesel burner that heats the radiators. Also planning to get a diesel generator so socialist government won’t affect us.

    The irony is that the only reason South Africa’s power picture is as good as that (ie. not many times worse than 800+ hours of blackouts per year) is that the economy is tanking anyway – reducing the power demand.
    
    Part of the reason for that failing economy is the power situation itself. ie. less and less people want to invest in industry when there is unreliable power.
    
    The South African government (ANC) sabotaged the power provider (Eskom), but forcing Eskom to but completely unsuitable power stations from a company owned by the ANC top brass. They are then forcing the country down an unreasonable path of solar panels and wind – without building other generation to back it up.
    
    South Africa is the major power provider to the whole of Southern Africa, so these power problems have a crippling effect on the whole of Southern Africa (the only other generation of note is Cahora Bassa dam in Mozambique which generates 2GW – about half what a single coal station outputs).

  We can expect this to increase.
  
  The forced movement towards photovoltaic (solar panels) and wind increases network fragility.
  
  The forced move towards EVs will increase peak demand.
  
  PV and wind are only partial generation solutions because they need to have an equal amount of dispatchable generation built to back them up (ie. generation that is available on demand) – coal, gas, nuke…
  
  The only way to sort this out would be for the decision makers to feel the pain.
  
  Here’s what I proposes. Whenever the power gets cut deliberately, the first household to lose power is the PM’s, followed by all her ministers, followed by everyone that owns an EV.
  
  PV can work in places like California where one of the major demands is air conditioning. ie. when the sun is shining and it is hot, the PVs are working. However it is a very broken concept the way things are in NZ: we use ours for winter heating – when the sun doesn’t shine.

    As you say, it is going to become more frequent in the years ahead if they keep pushing along this low- resilience path for grid power.

      Texas’ problems mainly stem from going to a zero-regulation libertarian experiment. Which has utterly failed.
      
      Even committed free market folks know you have to have a minimal level of basic regulation.
      
      Nor does it help that they went full state independence which leaves them entirely alone for supply.

      As I pointed out here, Et tu Texas?:
      
      This subsidized wind and solar power have, as planned, pushed reliable thermal operators out of business or prevented new generation from being built as operators can’t make money in the market. This reduced the capacity margin. In 2009, coal-fired plants generated nearly 37 percent of the state’s electricity (now 18%) while wind provided about 6 percent (now 23). In the same period, Texas energy consumption rose by 20 percent.
      
      Moreover, the supposed “free market” folk controlling the Texas grid are well aware of the impact but, hemmed in as they are, it’s tough to challenge it:
      
      To lessen the price increases from “unreliables” governments try to get away with as few reliable power plants online as they can get away with. TX is no exception. The Public Utilities Commission of TX has called their grid’s margin for error (“reserve margin”) “very scary.”
      
      We’ll see if that event changes things in Teaxs. For certain they won’t be going for the California model of super-regulated, decidedly not free-market electrical generation and distribution, which delivers such brownouts and blackouts on a regular basis nowadays.

    Batteries are getting cheap, CATL are touting a long life sodium battery that can drop storage to about NZ$50/kWh in a few years, which will make home storage for PV cheap (~$1000 per day of storage). That will make going off grid attractive for a lot of people – particularly when confronted with extortionate $8k grid connection fees as I was by Vector a few days ago. For new builds spending $30k on PV+batteries to go off grid will be the most economic choice in another 5-10 years (batteries being the current weakest link).

      You’d need to size the system for your highest demand (probably winter), worst case cloud (probably two weeks) and shortest days of sunshine (winter again). Then remember the battery charge/discharge efficiency is only about 80%. All up you’d want about 375kWh of batteries. At the prices you give that’s about $19k of batteries.
      
      A spend of $30k PV+$20k batteries = $50k would still leave you with a limited system. eg. maybe not being able to run all your desired loads at once.
      
      If you then need to replace that lot every 20 years (probably more often for the batteries), then that’s going to cost you $3k or more per year (amortised).
      
      Still lots has to happen to make that work.

  If you look on trademe you see many people selling cryptocurrency mining rigs, one I saw consumes, with a conservative estimate, close to 10 households use of power. I do wonder how many people are wasting electricity (keeping prices high and resulting in more coal being burned) speculating on cryptocurrencies.

    How can they have their zoom meetings with no power.
    
    I read in the states they don’t recommend charging electric vehicles over night as they are turning out to be quite severe fire hazards. Quite a few houses have burnt to the ground. They’re also not allowed in underground carparks.

    An EV battery is good for about 80,000 to 100,000km. After that it is likely to expire pretty quickly and need replacing.
    
    If you’ve bought one with 70,000 km on the clock then you’re likely to be up for a $10k battery purchase in a year or so.
    
    Once you amortise the cost of a battery into the mix, things get expensive. Just the cost of the battery life costs you around $10 per 100km. That’s more expensive than running a car.
    
    What’s going to happen when beneficiaries satart buying EVs to replace their people movers with 3 space-saver tyres? I guess the taxpayer will be funding battery purchases through MSD hardship grants.

      The impact of solar cycles is huge.
      
      Any change in solar radiation (ie. heat from the sun) is inconsequential compared to other changes.
      
      By far the biggest is the changes in atmospheric ionisation and chemistry which impact a whole raft of factors such as cloud formation and the way water is broken down in the atmosphere. One of the biggies is changes in the ozone which changes a whole lot of other factors – including how methane is broken down.
      
      Compared to the impact of solar cycles to our human impact is like comparing tidal changes to the waves caused by a kid in a paddling pool.

      The thing to watch as far as NZ and Hydro power is concerned is when the Weather system changes to El Nino ( Droughts) for Western Pacific ( NZ).
      If we cant keep up now with Power generation then sure wont when changes to El Nino.
      
      Simple Meteorology and not Word Soup sprouted by NIWA and Climate change “Scientists”.

  The gummit bans any and all new hydro, fucks up the gas supply by driving the rigs off shore (no more exploration and the gas fields are now unstable), coal is frowned upon and the chances of new fossil fuel generation permits are less than zero and now increased demand for electricity with a rising population and the push for EV’s.
  All the while absolutely NOBODY willing to pay for demand side management technology.

    Muttonhead: to an extent you are right, there is a lag time to build generation. 10 years or so to get a power station going (more if the taniwha gets in the way).
    
    But we’re only seeing the very thin end of the wedge. So far one outage to a small part of the country.
    
    The shortages we face in 2025-2030 will be far worse and will be caused by the current mob fiercely resisting building thermal generation.
    
    The huge push for electrifying everything – including EVs – is not being balanced with an increase in generation. That is going to cause far more problems down the road. If EVs are to replace 20% of vehicles in the next 10 years then we’re going to need massive generation builds and opening up more gas and coal fields.
    
    Bottom line is that PRiNZess will not build power stations (or gas and cola) on her watch. It goes completely against the brand she is building for #CinD4UN!.

        The problem is really with generation and the grid. The grid is owned by Transpower – aka ECNZ aka a state owned enterprise.
        Generation is mixed, but it is far from an open market. It does not help when the commie scum say they will nationalise generation (then don’t). This makes investors very skittish.

    Muttonhead, the problem has been coming since the Clyde High dam was commissioned. Since then, successive govts (Labour (supported by the Greens & that fool Shaw) and National) have allowed 4 thermal power stations to be decommissioned and gutted, had mass immigration (NZ’s population is now 5 mill as opposed to 4mill in 1992), and then allowed a half baked market based system to not plan for future generation. Then add to it the dumb call to replace gas generation with coal, and hope wind farms and solar farms will sprout with all the generation needed and you have the causes of NZ’s electricity dilemma.
    
    So, play your petty game, it sure will not give you any power. Because you haven’t got a solution.

      For a big project like a major power station the RMA would not be a problem. It would inevitably be called in by the Minister with a 12 month fast track consenting process driven by a presiding officer, usually a retired High Court Judge.
      
      That is how all the big motorways have been done and in fact most of the windfarms.
      
      My understanding is the Project Aqua was not seen by Meridian as sufficiently profitable.

    See at 0815 this morning they have switched on the last resort diesel / oil generation. So if you are charging your EV this morning you are literally charging it with diesel.
    
    I don’t have complete information on the education of Ministers in this government but IIRC they are heavily weighted to politics and history. I doubt that the PM is aware of basic absolute truths of energy and thermodynamics. Same the Minister of Energy.       The diesel generation is open cycle gas turbines (OCGTs). These are basically jet engines that spin and make electricity rather than spin a big fan to move a plane.
      
      They are extremely expensive to run (both fuel and maintenance). They are, however very handy for quickly tweaking the generation profile because they can be started and stopped quickly. Hydro can fill that function too, so OCGTs are less valuable in NZ. Running OCGTs as base generation is pretty much emergency only.
      
      I worked in power generation in the 1980s in South Afrrica. Scheduling generation is a bit like a big game of Tetris – fitting the different blocks of generation together. We considered having to run the OCGTs losing that game and it was very infrequently that we did that. Now South Africa runs their OCGTs a lot of the time trying to stave off load shedding.

    Peak demand is the biggest problem.
    
    One of the things they need to do to reduce peak demand is to manage the growing EV fleet better:
    1) No fast charging. Ban them. Fast chargers use about the same amount of power as 60 households.
    2) All EVs only to be charged through internet controlled chargers so that they can be turned off and scheduled remotely. This means they will take longer to charge and may, sometimes, not be recharged overnight.

There are circa 4mill vehicles in NZ, if these are only charged at night the off peak models are out the window, electricity prices will go up and there are no real plans to meet current demand loads. It is a mess that only governments lead by unqualified amateurs can create.

  It is beginning to look like a nightmare of huge proportions. Full hydro lakes, if that ever happens, wont fix the problem. The Greens have stopped any new hydro – Mokihinui, Lower Waitaki, etc.
  
  We can squeeze a bit more geothermal but far too little to cover the gap. Onslow if ever it was built will not always deliver. It is clearly uneconomic. Huntly is to close. Then its wind and solar and we are stuffed.

    If we don’t get off our arses and banish Green ideologies, we are fucked because the need for Electricity is increased with every appliance/tool/EV/industry we create. In short, burying our heads in the sand won’t resolve the situation. The demand for electricity isn’t going to diminish. It’s going to be the exact opposite and very expensive.
    We need to immediately start Planning, Building and setting to work a reliable, efficient and effective solution and IMO, that solution can only be Nuclear. If we stand back and wait for an alternate solution, it’ll be too late.

      Huntly sits on a coalfield, and a coalfield that contains considerable amounts of coal-seam gas.
      
      Solid Energy was working on harnessing this gas, when it went belly up, largely because of a dive in world coal prices.
      
      Solid Energy was exporting amounts of coal. Now we are importing it for Huntly thermal power generation.

      I’m an EV owner but far from smug. When we purchased our EV six years ago there were no power shortages.
      
      The power outages were during peak demand time from 7 PM To 9 PM. Most EV charging occurs after 11 PM when the rates drop to a out 1/3 of normal due to lack of demand.
      
      Last night did not charge at all because we had plenty of sunlight during the day and charged from our solar array.
      
      Please don’t blame EV owners for a problem caused by lack of infrastructure investment by power companies.
      
      BTW it takes power to refine petrol and diesel.

  When the lights go out don’t expect the Minister to go oops. They will blame transpower, John Key, whatever. The solution will be a new centralised Department of Electricity with a Maori name. It will be in charge of rationing electricity to achieve a just transition to a zero carbon future.

  Labour has known this was coming since day one. Meghan Woods, the then minister of energy, did a speech on it in her opening address. She spoke about the need to increase generation by a percentage (8?) every year. That was immediately followed by ditching gas and pushing more people to electricity.
  
  Since then labour has done absolutely nothing to improve the situation, instead relying on the coal fired emergency backup at Huntly to offset the increased demand. This is why we now burn more coal then ever before. The National party, Act and media have done NZ a massive disservice by not bringing this issue to the fore.
  
  Now it is all to late. The RMA remains in place and even without it new generation of the scale required (I’m guessing at least one large hydro, if that is even possible) will take 10-15 years. In the meantime NZ will have to get used to massive power price rises and brown outs. Thanks Labour, National and Act.

    There have been a couple of extensions to our geothermal generation recently, but of course these projects were consented during the Key Government years.
    
    Ironically, one of the geographical areas that has had excess rainfall for some time was denied a consent for a new hydro project not long ago, and continues to be supplied with virtually all their electrical energy supply by draining it from the rest of the country – this is of course Westland.

  You guys realise the last time this happened was 10 years ago right during the middle of John Keys government.
  
  Point is, we as a country have a broken market. If left to the generators they are simply not going to build more generation because it would mean less profits, they are incentivised at the moment to keep the market close to shortage which keeps the spot prices high.
  
  You also cannot click your fingers and build more generation overnight – it literally takes a decade or more. So even if we started today any decent power station would not come online until after 2030. Yes Labour probably should have got in and started work on this in 2017, but even if they did we wouldnt see any benefits of this right now.
  
  Before the market reforms NZ had the 4th lowest power price in the OECD and we built sufficient generation capacity. Since then its all gone downhill.
  
  Clearly there is market failure here and the whole system needs to be binned and re-written.

Interesting spat between Troy Bowker and Sir Ian Taylor about our history. Bowker suggests Taylor is “sucking up to the left Maori loving agenda”, and added, “Stuff is a far left extreme publication essentially surviving on being nice to Labour and the Greens in exchange for subsidies.”

Taylor claims, “If we are going to have a debate about naming rights let’s do it fully informed about the amazing feat of the Pacific Voyagers who named the whenua where they settled.”

That’s all very fine but Taylor cannot get his “facts” right. He stated that Maori set out to come down here at the time the Egyptians were building the pyramids. What??? The pyramids were built over 4,500 years ago and even the earliest date for Kupe and co is 1200 AD . Many suggest it was even later than that.

Taylor then suggests that they (these early arrivals) called the place Aotearoa. That is simply wrong and cannot be substantiated.

Thereby lies much of the problem. The woke lefties simply alter the ‘facts’ to suit their evil agenda.

    Ian Taylor, who has a Maori mother, is a bright fellow who came out of the TV industry. He has said that he harnessed technical skills of what he has called “bright white guys” to create great video products that he envisages. That is, Taylor is a skilled and successful technology entrepreneur.
    
    Taylor has described how he feels as a white-looking Maori (his words) being regarded as “not really a Maori”.
    
    This and developing video products for America’s Cup racing, seem to have fuelled his drive to get Polynesians recognition for their ocean voyaging.

    He put it really poorly then, because they didn’t ‘set out’ for here at that time.
    Also, the Pacific people called the Polynesians are best thought of as originating FROM Polynesia. Their ancestors have common genetic links into Micronesia, and even Melanesia, and of course the eastern part of Asia: Taiwan – but even the Taiwanese tribal people are diverse in terms of origins.
    So worth considering the Rhetorical question ‘where do Polynesians come from?’
    In a similar way, the Maori themselves originate (culturally) from NZ: their ancestors didn’t step off the canoe/waka as Maori with curvilinear moko and greenstone (although I have seen documentaries show exactly that!).
    This is about as meaningful as saying that Julius Caesar landing in Britain means a link/lineage to those with Roman ancestry or cultural linkage to pre-Saxon English through to Captain Cook, and in the span of history……therefore, the ‘white’ peoples here “set out for NZ” at the time of the Roman invasion.
    Or should we push that back to Phoenician tin traders?
    i.e. There was no fore-knowledge at all of where history would end up thousands of years later.
    The world only grew larger to people over time.
    
    To labour the point; people making ceramics in Taiwan 3,000 years ago were not in the act of ‘setting out to NZ’, so linkage back to the time of ancient dynasties like Egypt is contriving awful hard to give Maori a enormous historical span.
    To call the exploration of the Pacific as simply ‘Maori’ is rather dumbing it down, even if it makes someone swell with racial-based pride.
    Sir Ian=Poor thesis, needs more work.

        My point was that the “Great Migration” never really happened as such. There were no armadas of canoes with horses and families and great pots of taro and yams.
        
        Over many years many boats went awandering for a variety of reasons and over quite a few hundred years a small population built up and maybe, just maybe some of those went back but over time different groups arrived, settled and continued their society in whatever form they desired.
        
        Again, over time they grew and as usual, decided to explore a bit around here and found a few of the “each others” and either decided to befriend or destroy.
        
        So we are “feed” a line that supposedly supports the theory that maori were the great navigators to support the “maori science” waffle whereas the reality is vastly different.
        
        The myth of the “great migration” only tells one small part of the story but I’ll leave to those interested to go find the rest. Remember, the life expectancy of maori before the Euros arrived was 28 – 30 years. Hardly a great society divorced from the realities of life throughout the undeveloped world at the time and look at what the Chinese were up to in the 1400’s…..

  I have taken a closer interest in this bill than I might have because earlier this year a much-loved young relative – 16 – told her parents that she wanted to be a boy.
  She had realised that all her life she’d felt she was in the wrong body; that she should have been a boy.
  As an uncle who has known her all life I naturally followed her path with interest.
  One thing that stood out was she was ‘different’ from other girls. She didn’t seem to identify with them and seemed more comfortable with males.
  I could go on.
  I suppose that when she told me I wasn’t surprised.
  Her parents are supportive. Her father says he would rather have a happy son than an unhappy daughter.
  So I’m more interested in this than otherwise I might.
  Although her parents are supportive they have been careful to urge caution; she is still young; think carefully before you do anything irrevocable that you might regret later; we get only one body, one life before we check out.
  Parliament needs to make sure that parents will not be criminalised for being parents. It’s parents’ job in the bringing up of their children to prepare them for their adulthood.
  That surely must include being cautious, expressing caution, urging careful thought as their offspring stand on the edge of the nest before spreading their wings and leaping off the edge.
  Parents should be able to do their job without the fear of Constable Plod knocking on their door.
  The other thing about this bill is that it’s a distraction.
  How often does ‘conversion therapy’ happen? When was the last time?
  Back in the 90s a woman arrived into our church having fled from another, rather extremist ‘Christian’ church.
  She had thought she might be gay. They prayed (I’d say even preyed) over her.
  They left her fucked in the head.
  Nobody in our church was concerned about her possible gayness.
  She was with us for a couple of years, met a guy in another part of the country, our marriage celebrant presided over her wedding, and they went away.
  I thought that what the people in the other church had done to her was cruel and unchristian.
  Having said that, though, that while our MPs spend time and effort on banning this ‘therapy’ more children sink deeper into ‘poverdee’.

  I don’t know CM; I wasn’t at the “non-event”. I was however at the National Party conference in Manukau, which was the biggest conference attendance for a decade, and one of the biggest post-election conferences for many, many years.
  
  It’s a shame that the media has chosen to focus on the spat between David Carter and Peter Goodfellow. At the end of the day they were the only two realistic candidates for the presidency, and Carter’s reaction to not being elected might be construed as proof that he wasn’t the right person to lead the board.
  
  With DPF’s approval, I’m hoping to have a guest post today or tomorrow where I will talk about one policy session in particular, which brought tears to the eyes of this cynical old fart. But that stuff doesn’t sell newspapers or generate clicks like blood on the floor does, even if there was no blood on the floor!
  
  For me, the conference was excellent, and with so many delegates in attendance from Southland to Northland, the grassroots party organisation is in great heart. I also got to meet a few people who confused me for the Tony Stuart who regularly comments here, and it’s always great to put faces to names.

  Flicked over to Morning Report on the car radio, Corrin Dann interviewing spokesman for “Oil and Gas lobby group Energy Resources Aotearoa”, who carefully explained that NZ needs a range of energy sources (eg to cover for windless days/nights etc) …. poor Corrin couldn’t seem to get his head around that having 100% Renewable Energy supply is “not a good thing” (in terms of reliability/availability etc).
  
  Sheesh, here’s the problem we have with gullible/naive/idealist lefties (politicians, activists and MSM media) …. they have to follow a pre-described course (“climate change”) and any deviation from that course (like having backup gas and coal) just does their heads in – they almost can’t process the need for having “dirty” energy because it is against everything that they believe in.
  
  Even the Muppets had more brain capacity and would “get it” compared to these lefties!

So we are now seeing the impact of climate change POLICIES.
— The temperature has not changed. Actually it is exactly the same as 7 years ago when the last IPCC report was issued. Awkward.
— Electricity generation by reliables has reduced.
— Electricity usage has increased – even before taking into account electric cars.
— Solar makes no contribution to NZ’s peak time usage, which happens at night.
— Windmills make no contribution for seasonal peaks. That is, on cold STILL mornings.

Yet I predict we will see images of back lit steam on the news tonight but not stationary windmill rotors. The Labour government will prefer people to freeze before asking those with (subsidised) electric cars to delay plugging in until after peak time.

Unlike the future temperature, this was entirely predictable.

    That’s the Rivian truck you raise there, which has a battery capacity of 180kw/h, while a Tesla Powerwall is 13.5kw/h and can power a house overnight.
    
    I think the truck will be okay. If the power is out and you use your car for power I hardly think you’ll be leaving all the lights on and blasting the heat + TV + showers + all the computers at the same time.

  2. If the changes are already set in motion, and are irreversible, then we’re all wasting time and money dancing on the head of a pin, and we may as well stop reading there. (Trust me, that last one makes a lot of sense.)
  
  3. Strong and sustained reductions in CO2 and other greenhouse gases would limit climate change – yes they would in a parallel universe.
  
  They do make one true statement, right at the beginning. There are changes in the Earth’s climate in every region and across the whole climate system. That’s because it’a a complex beast, beyond the wit of any man (or woman) to even fathom, let alone exercise the breathtaking arrogance to believe he (or she) has the means to control it.

I would expect “strong uptake” to mean more people than expected have booked vaccinations, which would push back the dates when you could book in the next group of people, delaying the rollout to them.

So how does it happen that more people wanting to be vaccinated means less time is needed to vaccinate them?

When are the lies going to stop to attempt to lock the world down to accomplish the NWO’s agenda?

The climate nonsense goes way back. In 1972 we were scared that we would all be frozen as icicles by 2000. Hadley Research Centre (UK) became infamous for their change of heart and their leaked emails showed a system of how to change the national weather histories to give a perception of increasing warming. NIWA were suckered and acted accordingly. However the long term UK weather records stretching back into the 1700’s have survived.

Truth has become a sparse commodity with an accelerating price. The sun gets ignored despite being the main driver of our external energy sources. It’s is notable that the art of Brueghel showing the winter fairs in Europe was echoed by fairs on the iced over Thames. The sun had a no-spots season with global cold. There are serious scientists presently measuring such things and they are expecting a return of the cold.

We need to mitigate not master. But political forces dictate otherwise. The WEF (NWO) leader Karl Schwab has it all outlined in his manifesto. The “vaccines” will be used to bring about a controlled lockdown and the Great Reset will be upon us. Our politicians will be their useful idiots to effect that with the help of the necessities of enforcing climate change protection. Hence delivering supplicants to the NWO table for care and control. In the background, their vision extends to a world population ranging as low as 300 million. Are they really friendly?

There are lunatics everywhere. It worse when they have political control and power.

I recieved aletter from my District Council yesterday informing me that my direct credit amount to the Waikato District Council would increase from $47 .00 per week to $61.53 in my calculations a rise in my rates of about $750.00 per year and this in Huntly New Zealand, so if we are getting rate rises like this how will the bigger Cities population come to terms with the cost of their rates.

Random musings today:

1). Any of the feckless ones going to do a fact check on the Blairite’s claim of misinformation regarding Jimmy the Stevedore not getting the KungFlu jab. Pray to God – Morrah is on to this.

2). How about making it mandatory of all beneficiaries to have the jab and anyone relying on the state (i.e. emergency housing etc)?
Why is it the responsible ones that get compulsion whereas we let the real risk demographics dribble along in dumb denial.

3). Can we get a breakdown of the PPE used and for our own sake understand it wasn’t just hands over their noses when they entered the vessel?

4). Rolling blackouts – get used to it folks. Has any of the feckless looked into this and whether without gas and coal we can force enough power through the one cable we have to the North Island to satisfy power consumption in our main population centers?

5). The next National PM needs to make Hosking a member of the Order of New Zealanders. He is the George Orwell of modern Aotearoan (sic) times.

Called family GP yesterday to book my son in as he’s been feeling unwell. Was told his normal doctor is constantly booked up a week in advance.

Managed to get an appointment with another today and just listening to reception take multiple calls telling patients they can’t help as no doctors available

More people will be killed by the locked borders than by COVID in NZ

  I think you can replace the “will be” with “have been”.
  
  Last year all the hospitals were effectively shut down due to level 4. This was ridiculous since Level 4 is supposed to have only been triggered when the hospitals were overrun with CV19 cases and that never happened – not even close.
  
  While hospitals were shut down from April (or so) to July (or so), numerous people did not attend the outpatients clinics and get cancer & heart checks etc. Some of these people thus ended up missing issues that could have been sorted out if detected in time. Many of those have since died or had their lives cut short.
  
  So yes, apart from the bullshit policies that are causing medical staff to flee NZ, the health system has dropped the ball – causing multiple people to die sooner.
  
  On the flip side, just about everyone who’s life was “saved” by lock downs is probably dead by now anyway. Almost all those people would have been frail and/or ill and would likely have been in the last year or 18 months of their life anyway.

    Maori work to the spirit of Maui which means trickery is an acceptable cultural practice. It runs throughout the Pacific (and China) so deceit is advantage to be used.
    Maori activists are on the rise attempting to fill the vacuum left by the past generation. Some even want to bring back utu.

Yesterday in the “National Board Elections” thread, the following was posted by mark ..

Now what that has to do with the National Party conference elections is beyond me but I’ll respond to the childish attempt at an insult anyway.

I’ve always thought naivety was difficult to spot but absolute stupidity makes itself known immediately.

According to my numbers, 4,200,000 people have died from covid in the entire world since early last year.

Also according to my numbers 3,900,000 people died in the entire world in 2017 from respiratory disease so it looks like “covid” may have replaced “respiratory” as a cause of death.

The only way to actually measure the impact of covid will be by measuring excess deaths which will take a year or so.

If you think that “our response” is among the best in the world that says more about you than you realise and again, measurement of the quality of the response will take a year or 3 before it can be accurately assessed.

As many have pointed out, vaccination is not the magic bullet and elderly and at risk still seem to be dying vaccinated or not. “Positives” are not cases, despite what the media tells you and due to the poor testing regimes throughout the world, actual case numbers are hard to find.

Finally, I’d rather be short than stupid.

Dispite knowing it was connected to a Australian Covid – 19 case, Maritime New Zealand says.
So the question is why did the Ministry of Health approve it with more than 85 unvaccinated Port workers boarding the ship .

    Perhaps not. Somebody has to undo the Twist Locks on each corner of every container (the device that locks stacked containers together). Someone also has to remove the tensioning bars that hold stacks of containers together and someone also has to disconnect refrigerated containers from electrical supply boxes. However, in saying this, I’m not sure which if any of these tasks are done by ship’s crew. ‘Master Mariner (KB poster)’ could best answer this.

Blowed if I know why more people don’t install underfloor-heating.

A couple of years back, our power went out late one night in the middle of winter for about 5 hours, when a car hit a power pole in Shore Rd.

We didn’t even realise anything had happened until the next morning, when I noticed all the clocks in the kitchen were flashing 2:37am.
Yet all the floors were still warm due to the retained heat nd the whole house was still at 24 deg.

Just saying.

Some Thai hospitals are starting to buckle under the strain of Delta. Like Australia and other parts of Asia, Thailand had done remarkably well in keeping Covid under control, but the Delta variant has changed the situation on the ground dramatically.

Of course, the damage to the economy there due to the collapse of the international tourism industry has been immense (~20% of the Thai economy). They don’t have the welfare system that we do, so many Thai who used to work in tourism or who relied directly or indirectly on tourism for their livelihoods are in real trouble.

Rates of poverty are through the roof, and many people are literally surviving on food parcels handed out by various charities! And forget about having money to pay for your rent, who has that when you are out of a job and your town or city is in lockdown.

  Wow, did you see 41 people died from covid yesterday in Thailand. That’s incredible, especially when you consider Thailand averages 1600 deaths per day (Road deaths are over 12,000 pa) …….. especially when on average almost 8 people die from poor quality drinking water every day……
  
  Despite what the tourists see, Thailand is still a poor country but GDP only dropped by 6.5% ish in 2020 so 10% ish from the previous year.

    It states:
    Neither the Crown nor the defence contended that Folau was responsible for Fau’s death.
    
    We know that Vake delivered the first 3 punches to Fau’s head… other folks subsequently punched him in the head.
    
    Clearly the Crown and the defence can’t prove which punch was the Killer blow…but in all likelihood, each blow to the head was a step on the way to death.

      If the Crown had considered Folau had contributed to Fau Vake’s death he would have been charged with manslaughter.
      Someone else has been charged with manslaughter. From what I understand he hit Vake who then fell to the ground and smacked his head on the concrete causing his death a week later.
      
      Folau was convicted of “assaulting with intent to injure”.
      I would suggest hundreds of people in our fair land are assaulted every night in such a manner without death resulting.

        A hit to the head can cause quite different damage than a hit to other parts of your body.
        
        Swelling and bruising of the brain is often not noticeable in the first minutes after a ~~king-hit,~~ coward-punch but over a period of 24 hours, the brain can start swelling and/or bleeding.
        That’s the reason some folks are calling for a change to our assault laws to recognize the seriousness of a punch to the head.

  They made dumb choices, but so do many people, over the course of their lives, through ignorance, weakness or deliberately. Most of us are lucky enough to get away with it. They were not.
  
  It is not bullshit to cry for them. Their families and friends have suffered a shocking loss and need to mourn them. Their lives were not only their last poor choice – there were other times too and those who mourn will naturally want to recall and share those memories.

  I can recall ordering a taxi for 6 pax in Bangkok. Driver turned up in a Corolla. We fitted in. Probably safer than 3 tuktuks. We all do some dumb things and usually get away with 5hem.

Question one asked about the ‘ever changing’ recommended time between Jab one and two.
“We are still learning as we go.”
On dangers associated with catching covid after being immunised.
“Information from the US gives us great confidence.”
So we are happy to accept favourable data from the States about dangers of infections after immunisation.
However, we have to do our own research about timing between injections.
As we have no covid (other than in MIQ) in New Zealand how are we going to do that.
Anyone told they would be in touch to test them for the generation of antibodies?
Perhaps the time between jabs depends on research into how much vaccine is in New Zealand.

So lets get this right, two vaccine jabs in your arm wont prevent a person getting covid but only reduces the chances of getting the virus?

Meaning annually for the next couple of years or 10 years or the rest of your life 1-2 vaccine jabs will be required to sort of prevent you catching covid or the new variant strains that are bound to arise.

And the anti-vaxers or people who don’t like needles stuck in their arms will be treated like outcasts in society or ridiculed or at worst put in detention type areas away from the normal people — think I’m joking?

  Very interesting! Makes eminent sense too, though it’s hard to swim against the tide of fearful believers. At our work Xmas party I casually remarked that it was likely to be with us forever, much like the flu, and a lockdown regime would eventually have to give way to something approaching acceptance of risk. Well golly gee, I was accused of all sorts of crimes, including the worst of all: I was accused in shrill tones of being a “covid denier!”…despite it being implicit in my argument that covid exists.   Infections are still very relevant here, just look at the 356 cases in NSW today and their hospitalisation, ICU and death numbers. And they are a touch ahead of us in vaccinations
  
  The UK has a vaccination rate over three times ours (58% fully vaccinated, 11% partially vaccinated on Aug 7). We won’t be there for months
