Head of Oxford Vaccine Group: Delta variant renders herd immunity from Covid ‘mythical’

Reaching herd immunity is “not a possibility” with the current Delta variant, the head of the Oxford Vaccine Group has said. Giving evidence to MPs on Tuesday, Prof Sir Andrew Pollard said the fact that vaccines did not stop the spread of Covid meant reaching the threshold for overall immunity in the population was “mythical”.

“The problem with this virus is [it is] not measles. If 95% of people were vaccinated against measles, the virus cannot transmit in the population,” he told the all-party parliamentary group (APPG) on coronavirus. “The Delta variant will still infect people who have been vaccinated. And that does mean that anyone who’s still unvaccinated at some point will meet the virus … and we don’t have anything that will [completely] stop that transmission.”

Ardern’s government claims to “follow the science”.

This is patently false.

They follow the polls.

  One and a half months after the abolition of all domestic operations, a record number of people have been diagnosed infected in recent weeks, despite the fact that the majority of the population has been vaccinated.

  Ro vax the vulnerable, have the meds available for treatment, (we all know they work), isolate the vulnerable and open up. The vax has a shelf life – need to open up quickly and the boosters ready for the olds.
  
  Ro vax passports also are medically redundant. The ro can still be carried and passed on by those who have been vaxxed. Got a ro vaxx passport? So what.
  
  Zero covid ignores all other health, economic & personal freedom considerations and ultimately relies upon the army patrolling the streets. Look at those zero covid creeps in Wellington they will have the military option ready.

    We have two root problems:
    
    1. The government has spent 18 months deliberately terrifying (and lying to) the population about the impact of infections.
    
    2. The government can’t change tack without admitting they got it wrong.
    
    Point 2 is the differentiator between strong and weak leadership.
    
    Strong leadership fronts up, and says the situational knowledge has changed, and therefore we must change our approach. Weak leadership, of the type Ardern exhibits in spades, is to double down and line, spin and obfuscate.

    I am left understanding that the Vaccine (it is not it is a treatment that enables a degree of assistance to a human dealing with infections) will assist many threatened Pts in avoiding threats to life and ICU admissions. It is zero about “elimination”, “extinction”, it may produce a degree of allowing it to acceptably run its course as many other virus do in time.

      The continual relentless push for the vaccine and the level of bile and hatred spewed against those who legitimately ask good questions makes one wonder whatever happened to logic, reasoned debate, thoughtful consideration and patience when dealing with complex issues.
      
      Some questions that need attention.
      
      1) Where is the scientific proof of the isolated virus?
      2) Which scientific studies prove lockdowns, curfews, anti-social distancing, masks eliminate or reduce viral spread work? And to what extent?
      3) Why do big tech censor so much?

        If nothing else, leaving aside competing and conflicting graphs and data that one may present, the fact that a good faith debate will not be entered into and critics are dismissed and shunned tells you without a shadow of a doubt that an agenda is being implemented, one which is not being made explicit.   Krazykiwi, without stating the blindingly obvious, the release of Skeggs report last night was a piece of political sidestepping the bad press.
  
  It is a report that tells us, what most of us have always expected regarding foreign travel, vaccines and MIQ, so it is no surprise.
  
  But what it has done, has moved Megan’s problem of Monday off the front pages of most of the newspapers. Or as we say, “look over there, a squirrel!”
  
  This is why government is awash with spinmeisters. Clearly, Ardern learnt her politics well in London, when the 9/11 event was used by the Transport Secretary’s PR advisor (Jo Moore) to bury bad news.

    The Strategic Covid-19 Public Health Advisory Group, led by Professor Sir David Skegg, has been delivering its advice to the Government since early June, with the report released to media on Wednesday. The group’s report consists of three letters of advice sent to the government on June 10, June 24 and July 27.

  Iceland’s chief epidemiologist recently suggested that herd immunity was a myth. That is no surprise given that Iceland is possibly the most heavily vaccinated country in the world, yet is seeing more Covid cases than when nobody was vaccinated.

        At August 6 (last Friday), 74.8 per cent of people in Iceland had been fully vaccinated and 80.6 per cent had been fully vaccinated or partly vaccinated.
        
        It’s worth noting as well that on June 26 Iceland lifted all domestic Covid-19 restrictions and on July 1 lifted some restrictions at the borders, such as stopping tests of vaccinated passengers upon arrival.
        
        An official said Iceland didn’t have the manpower to test everyone arriving in the country.

  The goal posts for so called science keep changing.
  Back in June 2020 the WHO definition of immunity.
  “the indirect protection from an infectious disease that happens when a population is immune either through vaccination or immunity developed through previous infection.”
  
  They then quietly changed it
  “a concept used for vaccination, in which a population can be protected from a certain virus if a threshold of vaccination is reached.”
  So they literally handed herd immunity to big pharma on a plate.
  They now have their new WHO herd immunity in Israel into the third jab and dozens are testing positive.
  It is a fact if you catch this bad version of the flu, you have immunity. The Who have removed this to jab these people to put them back to the ability to be infectious again.

    The pro-vaxx (and the ‘get an annual booster’) mob have been quick to dismiss Antibody-dependent Enhancement (ADE) in respect of the current vaccines.
    
    This is something I’m investigating as, and this is purely anecdotal, most of the people I know who get regular flu shots get the flu, and most of those I know who don’t get flu shots don’t get the flu. Is this ADE at work?

      Krazy – I totally agree with this. Every year my wife gets the flu shot and within a couple of weeks gets a heavy cold or flu (call it what you will) that no one else in our household gets… she then gets it another 3 or 4 times during the winter. I barely get one winter bug these days and have never and will never get a flu shot.
      
      This year, after me showing her the yearly statistics of her illness vs flu shot she decided not to get one. You guessed it, not a sniffle to be seen!

        This is most likely coincidental given the reduced spread of seasonal influenza due to reduced global travel, quarantine measures, and mask wearing in spaces which transmit the flu most easily – buses, trains, confined spaces.
        
        It also may be something unique to your wife, and that she is just really susceptible to colds, which as cmm says, are not influenza.

        Batty, the two major factors probably are:
        1) Everyone is far more sensitised to coughing/sneezing, so sick people are rather staying home than going to work etc.
        2) Hand washing.
        
        Wearing masks is only beneficial if people are actually coughing and sneezing. If they’re staying at home it’s pointless.

        I have the opposite experience. I regularly get the flu jab, and some few years back for some reason I missed out (on holiday when the work jab was scheduled I think) and not only actually had the flu but also the worst series of colds I can recall.
        
        So anecdote, not a replacement for real data.

      Sounds weird – I almost always get the flu jab. The only year I didn’t get it I got 2 different strains of flu. That’s good enough for me, but each to their own.
      And I suspect many people who think they have had the flu actually haven’t. It can be pretty severe and some folk think a bad cold is the flu.

They will not be offering the jabs out of the goodness of their hearts …

        Often it is to be seen to be doing the right thing, but even if there is a small payback it still helps.
        
        If a person gets flu (real flu, not a cold), then they’re going to be off work for at least a week. What’s the cost of losing a worker for a week? Probably a few thousand bucks. Cost of a flu shot is maybe $20. Therefore even if it has a 1% payback it is a win.

  What will happen when NZ reaches peak vaccination? Given that it now appears that being vaccinated means that you can still catch the virus, you just won’t get as sick.
  At the point we have vaccinated all who are willing, maybe 70% of the population, the government is then faced with the decision to open up the country and allow Covid in. Like the UK has done. Alternately to keep us locked up forever on the zero Covid strategy.
  My bet is the latter- keep us locked up until magic or whatever.

    The language is very important. “Being vaccinated” means that you have an immune response and so are protected from infection and illness. In contrast, simply having a shot in your arm is not the same as “being vaccinated.” Because people who have had their shots are still getting sick, it is clear that they are not vaccinated at all.

Someone has to start holding this Government to account with the decisions they have made with results and failure of policy becoming a regular occurence.
The blame game by this Government is pathetic as it is the first form of rebuttal use for everything that goes wrong, with the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern the main culprit. It’s never her fault it’s alway others even though the latest problem was through a ‘Captains call ‘ made by herself the Prime Minister in closing down our gas fields around New Zealand.
Remember how she threw the young Lass who in the Prime Ministers view caused the breakout of some cases of Covid- 19 a few months ago that then was proved wrong and the Health Ministry was at fault, well no opology for the way the Prime Minister tried to crucify her and even though it was proved no attempt to except the blame.Then we have the latest saga on the 85 maritime worker who have not been vaccinated and with that we find out that many on the front line have still not been vaccinated, but again it is still not our Prime Minister’s fault it’s someone else’s.
It’s despicable that Jacinda Ardern the Green Leaders and the media find more time to criticize Judith Collins and National over their view on policy that is badly written and Irresponsible on the chance that law abiding citizens could be jailed for caring about their children who they are responsible for not the Government.
Labour needs to look at their own mistakes and start taking responsibility themselves over the problem that this Country found themselves in on Monday the 9th of August.

Last night on 7 Sharp a group of young kids was asked their preference for the name of this country. Result…mainly Aotearoa, with a couple adding New Zealand after that name.
What colour were these kids? Almost all, if not all of them, were brown.

  I guess they will survive. But some of us remember when overseas travel was the adventure of a lifetime, and couldn’t wait until we left school and get a job so that we could travel to foreign countries with our parent’s blessing, despite their misgivings.
  Just think, if the kids didn’t send a postcard, or learn how to hack telephone boxes, their parents assumed that no new was good news, and that they were still alive – somewhere.
  No wonder they are ‘increasingly fragile’ – nowadays they have instant global communication with their phones, and don’t have to rely on their own wits at all.

Effectively we are kicked up despite being fully vaccinated. The lucky few who can get a managed isolation slot can go on a short trip.

I am beyond angry about this. Many people in New Zealand and around the world will be in despair. Oh but the elimination strategy will have a Maori name. Brilliant.

There are many fallacies the governments insane zero Ro policy is built upon.

One is that the economy has done very well recently, despite the closed borders and the lockdowns.

The top-line economic figures are indeed impressive, but when you look a bit closer, you realise that it’s all built on sand.

In February 2020, Government debt was approximately $60 billion. It is forecast to reach $190 billion by 2025. As a percentage of GDP, this debt increases from circa 20% to 50%. There was another $50 billion printed, or about 15% of GDP.

In total, we’ve had about 45% of GDP spending to support the economy for a couple of years.

Obviously, NZ goes bankrupt very soon if we keep borrowing and printing at anything like these levels going forward.

I think complete economic collapse is quite possible in a decade or so, if we continue on this socialist road to serfdom…

Each time we land on a ladder to lead us out of Covid-19 land (social distancing, hand-washing, deep-cleaning, mask-wearing, lockdowns, closed borders, MIQ, Vaccinations), the Government throws a dice that lands on a snake (delays, balls-ups, false accusations, weak vaccines) that sends us back to where we were 18 months ago.

Richard Prebble prods Chris Hipkins with the toe of his shoe this morning:

The government was warned a year ago in the Simpson/Roche Report that our ports are wide open to Covid.

The Maritime Union says its members are angry that they were put at risk by going on board a ship with Covid cases. Maybe I am the first to tell the union, the country is angry that its members have put everyone at risk by willfully refusing to be vaccinated.

The Maritime Union is affiliated to the Labour Party. Is this the reason ministers have not insisted port border workers be vaccinated? This is the fourth ship with Covid in a month.

Chris Hipkins, the Covid Response Minister, has been in politics all his life. He joined the Labour party as a schoolboy. You have to be highly political not to have acted on the Simpson/Roche report. Last weekend he was even denying the MIQ booking system is a failure.

My daughter came back from the United States to nurse her sister. It took four months to get an MIQ place. She dare not make a visit back to see her family in Hawaii for fear she will not get a MIQ place to return.

We were lucky. Imagine the trauma for families where parents have been split from children.

The Minister insists New Zealanders should have travelled when he advised there were MIQ places. He has yet to explain how we get cancer to obey his MIQ timetable.

The MIQ system is a shambles. The government’s Covid policy relies on luck.

Covid is not the only crisis Hipkins is presiding over. He is the Minister of Education.

After receiving a glowing independent report saying that Charter Schools “are meeting their learners’ needs using good and innovative practices”, Hipkins abolished Charter Schools.

In their NCEA results Maori and Pacifica pupils attending Charter schools exceeded the average achievement of all students.

The Minister assured us that he was going to introduce policies to ensure pupils succeed in state schools.

Where are these policies?

Under his watch education standards across the board have fallen. Once we led the world in English and math. Now we are near the bottom of the countries that participate in education comparison testing.

There’s more, but I won’t risk the ire of the moderators by copying and pasting it; go and have a read yourself. I can tell you though; it’s not complimentary!

This raises an interesting point however. The Covid Response portfolio is huge, and with the landscape seeming to change every week, it needs a Minister who is on top of their game.

But so does Education, which is of massive importance to parents, educators and students alike. Under Hipkins, Education is at best standing still, although others may argue it’s going backwards.

Hipkins seems to be one of the more competent Ministers in Ardern’s government, although to be fair, that’s not a high bar. The question needs to be asked however; should he be relieved of one of his portfolios, so that he can do justice to the other. It’s clear that, at the moment, he isn’t doing justice to either of these important portfolios.

    My wife has had a few professional dealings with Hipkins in regard to Early Childhood Education. For a while she found him engaged with issues, and willing to discuss alternative solutions. More recently she has seen less of him, and trying to get an answer from his office is like trying to get blood from a stone. There’s not doubt the demands of his Covid portfolio have impacted on his performance in Education.

        Apart from having the free maternal check-ups and the 1 week hospital holiday/baby (remember those) and the 3-yearly bosom squeeze and cervical inspection, I have endeavoured to keep myself very distant from the public health system.

        Women receive a lot more from government than men in health services, welfare and pensions, not to mention higher education costs (almost 50% more of them at university – leading in theory at least to higher incomes too). Would be only fair if they paid extra tax to compensate for their higher consumption of tax dollars. On the other hand men spend more on incarceration expenses.

      Have you looked at the intercepted data? It has time stamps, urls and mac addresses. The parties on both side of the data interchange have been identified down to the individual computer level.
      
      It nay not be well known but many computer system components have manufacturer ID in a standard form. Imagine emails in an office this enables a way to pick out an individual PC to send a reply too.

        perenara is calling for consequences for an opinion he doesn’t like.
        
        Is it racist to want a referendum or at least an adult conversation about changing our contry’s name? I don’t think so. I actually think it rather arrogant and possibly racist for people to just do so because they want it so but that’s not the issue.

The hypocrisy of rugby in New Zealand and the left in general.

A hurricanes board member makes a remark which has apparently “under lying racist tones”. Everyone demands he resign and people saying they wont attend any more matches untill he does.

Yet they are quite happy to support the all blacks who have a current player (Sevu Reece) who assaulted his missus including dragging her down the road and a fringe player (Shannon Frizzel) who assaulted a couple outside a public bar amongst them. Both were let off due to being all blacks.

Then there is poor old Joe Wheeler who put on a japanese accent for 3 words and got suspended for a month. Yet I see ads for nz shows where people put on an American accent and that’s ok?

I’m done with rugby, and judging by the crowds I’m not the only one.

Rugby player T.J. Perenera seems to be cashing in on his sports status (Hurricanes and All Blacks) for Maori-activist politics.

First, there was the wrist band with Ihumatao (the land occupation site) on it. He wore it at an All Blacks match. As Heather DPA noted at the time:

“… it was clearly designed for others to see because it was written upside down for him but right way up for the cameras to catch while he was doing the haka, and holding his fist to his chest during the national anthem.”

Now he has taken on a member of the Hurricanes board for criticising a statement by Dunedin part-Maori tech entrepreneur Ian Taylor about renaming New Zealand Aotearoa, and whether there should be a referendum.

Perenera seems to think that questioning whether the country’s name should be changed to Aotearoa is racist.

Hundreds of people may be dying from heart problems at home each week, figures suggest, amid fears that many are continuing to suffer from the NHS backlog caused by the pandemic response.

The latest death data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that, for the week ending July 30 in England, there were 1,029 more deaths than normal but only 389 of those were from Covid [kk: The same outcome I reported for Canada].

The figures also show there were 748 excess deaths in private homes during the same period – a 33.4 per cent increase on the five-year average. It suggests the majority of excess deaths are now happening at home rather than in hospitals or care homes.

    I’d hardly call him a fascist/racist aside from maybe his comments on India.

      I did not say covid was rampant here at any point. Initially, the level system8ndicated that we would move to level 4 only when hospitals were imminent danger of being overwhelmed. In other words, closethe bar door only after the horse had bolted.
      Also, don’t assume that by agreeing than the level system has been modified for good reasons that means that I think the government has handled the covid response well.

      The definitions use in the level system are pretty reasonable IMHO.
      
      For example Level 4 is for when sustained and intensive community transmission is happening with widespread outbreaks. Action: lockdowns, shut down hospital services and reprioritise for CV19.
      
      Based on the defined levels, we never made it out of Level 2 (maybe L3 for a week or two worst case), but we got treated with L4 lockdowns.

        We would have had ongoing local transmission, similar to most overseas countries. Deaths and hospitalizations lag infections by about two weeks, so the hospitals would be over run for about a month at a time before level 4 reduced hospitalization. That would have resulted in large umber of premature deaths (plus long covid). Way less than 80,000 dead though.
        If we had gone that way, would we have spent more or less time in various lockdowns? Who knows, but my guess is more.

      I gave no opinion on the merits of lockdown. I simply noted that very early on it was apparent that waiting until the virus was circulating freely and hospitals were overwhelmed before going to full lockdown was inferior to locking down early and eliminating local transmission.

  The wife and I were going to do a cray dive off our sailboat just South of Horseshoe Bay Last year. We anchored our boat and were waiting to make sure that the anchor was going to hold when a group of “local divers” showed up. They were dragging two floating nets behind them and vacuuming up everything they could see into the two large nets.

Troy Bowker is showing his true colours now. Didn’t like him back in uni, and still don’t today.

Anyone seen his latest comments? It doesn’t appear to have been quoted by media as yet, probably just a matter of time.

It crossed my mind as to whether he is going through some kind of mental health episode, but probably not, just speaking his true thoughts.

OAN is notable for a January 27 interview with one Edward Solomon, who claimed he was a mathematician who had found evidence that an algorithm had rigged the election.

Yet according to the lawsuit, Solomon was anything but a mathematician. He does not appear to have earned a degree in mathematics, bachelor’s or otherwise, and he seems to be employed as an installer for a swing set company. What’s more, in 2018, he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of “criminal sale of a controlled substance” and was incarcerated for over seven months.
