Zero-Covid ‘hermit economies’ are heading for catastrophe

It is not just New Zealand. The far larger Australian economy is starting to suffer just as much. After a record 30-year run without a single recession, the economy shrank last year, and it is now expected to contract again over the next couple of quarters.

First, both countries will have to keep lockdowns in place, potentially for years to come. The virus is mutating all the time – at the current rate we are going to run out of names for all the strains quite soon – and with no form of natural immunity, governments are left with no choice but to keep strict quarantine rules in place for anyone travelling into the country, and to go back into snap lockdowns as soon as a few cases emerge. As the virus gets more and more infectious, that will only worsen.

Countries can cut themselves off from the world if they want to. They can remain in permanent lockdown and prioritise public health over every other form of endeavour. In effect they are creating “hermit economies”, isolated from the rest of the world – and they are condemning themselves to eventual poverty.

We need leadership that follows rational, evidence-based science. Instead we are saddled with a vainglorious amateur who follows the polls. My children and grandchildren will look back and shake their heads at this generation’s collective stupidity.

  M Ardern does it appear follow the polls, but before they turn against her she follows an ideology. An ideology that is not always robust enough to stand when the wind changes. And that is the crux of the matter.
  
  However, let us not forget that the Prime Minister has a kitchen cabinet, a caucus with a fair amount of clout in one maybe two directions, many many advisers inhouse and thousands of officials at her beck and call.
  
  Buck stops with her though. How’s that working out these days?

  The problem is that many people (wrongly) think that people’s health is more important than economies. (Not to mention that the populace is suddenly scared of dying. Who would’ve thought that we are all going to die?) They don’t seem to realise where the spending on health, education and welfare comes from. It comes from taxation. People who don’t work or businesses that can no longer operate don’t pay much tax. That affects government spending which then negatively affects health, education and welfare.
  
  Lockdowns are not a solution. In NSW, they clearly aren’t working. The definition of lunacy is doing the same thing repeatedly and hoping for a different outcome.

    Yes many areas are hurting due to no incoming people. But you think in a raging pandemic pandemic the restaurants, bars, internal tourist and hospo industries would still functioning as normal? Mad.

        Did you miss the images of Italy back in February last year? The ones where hundreds of elderly people were lying cheek by jowl on cots in school gyms? Or the numbers out of Fiji just in the last month. Or Sydney in the last week. Yea I’d consider that raging.

When Senior Jounalists like Peter Wilson, Clare Trevett, Audry Young and Luke Malpass finally wake up to the fact that Jacinda Ardern our Prime Minister, Labour and Maori are actually playing them to achieve what they want not what New Zealander’s want you will see them screaming from the rooftops that it’s not right, but really it will be to late and the changes they will have pushed through on hate laws, free speech and the Maori agenda will affect them also.
You read these peoples article and it is just more of the echo chamber of Labour and all about discrediting the National Party so Labour can devide New Zealander’s with policies that in the end will lead to violence and racial disharmony.

  Hmm, dunno about that lazza. Ian Foster is probably the worst coach we have had since Ivan Vodanovich. And given the number of points we are leaking, our defensive coach is also shite. I note Plumtree is involved, so that’s a bit of a saving grace as he at least, has coached a few winning teams. Unlike Foster of course, who has a history of being a loser, barely winning 50% of his games with the Chiefs.

      With regard to Cullen, the worst was making him a centre in 1999, when he was pretty much at his best. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
      
      His knee reconstruction in ’01 led to him being unavailable, but Mitchell claimed he was dropped. Ergo, problems.

Did Bowker resign the Hurricanes because it was planned sometime ago before his Taylor comments or was it after?

The media are trying make out it was after but a closer reading indicates he was moving out anyway. If its the former he should sue their pants off. I dont know what grounds but sue the pricks anyway.

  Yes it is all very amusing. Europe, Russia, Canada and two thirds of the USA get cold in winter. And much of the the winter is cold like most New Zealand climate change activists have never experienced. Those geographic areas have a population of about 1.5 billion people.
  
  What keeps them alive in winter? Coal, gas, heating oil, and in France nuclear power. Solar and wind are simply not going to heat these places in winter. And in the case of the USA power all the air conditioners in summer.
  
  Like Jacinda, Joe Biden knows nothing about science, energy, economics or much else.
  
  The best shot at reducing greenhouse emissions is to promote research into new energy sources that actually deliver…well energy. And that means nuclear power. Besides cheese, wine and baguettes that is one thing France got right.

      I’m not sure what NZ needs to defend with Nuclear weapons. Perhaps against invasion from a certain very large and powerful fascist regime?
      
      I think Australia certainly needs them to defend it’s mineral and energy resources (not to mention it’s democracy and relatively decent way of life) for starters.
      
      NZ has lived in a relatively peaceful dreamworld since WW2 so this talk of arms and arming is frightening and alien in NZ’s little dreamworld. If the current small-c communist regime continues in NZ, things may descend into such lawlessness that people WILL want to be armed as a personal equaliser should they come face to face with violent crims (think Venezuela, Zimbabwe or South Africa). Shoot first to try to remain alive, then sort out the legals later. …and all that. Let’s hope the “charismatic” (barf) poser activist and her clown show are booted before it gets that bad.

    Maggy. I think National can and do make hay in the stuff ups in Government. Immigration, Health, Covid et al.
    
    However, what we don’t see is widespread reporting of these. You have to ask why? If you know where to look, you’ll find it.
    
    Case in point, Mallard shutting down Bishops question in Parliament on Thursday. I still think Bishop should have pushed the matter and got thrown out.
    
    Here’s my thinking as to why, and why it should be a standard tactic by National.
    
    In all of National’s dealings with the MSM, they seem to be selective in what they report, and anything with a whiff of scandal will get reported. If enough people get thrown out of parliament, it will cause the media to report it, and highlight Mallards behaviour in protecting the government from scrutiny.
    
    This government is the least open and most spun in living memory, and these are the tactics required.
    
    It will encourage the MSM to engage with National Spokespeople because it gives the MSM what they want. Ratings.
    
    It will give National Spokespeople the platform they need to talk directly to the public, and the message needs to be universal. This Government refuses to be held accountable, and we are as angry as the rest of the country!
    
    Keep doing that! Keep asking the questions to the point of being thrown out the house. It will do far more for your cause than sitting there and passively accepting the bullshit from the speaker.
    
    The country deserves better. National needs to talk directly to the NZ Public, and this is one way that we can get the MSM to help.

I remember when

When are New Zealanders going to stop pushing the idea that we have had freedoms unknown to people in many others countries.
In reality, much of the world has managed the same amount of freedom we have, with largely the same controls and border problems we have experienced.
What we have had is freedom from covid, which we have ‘enjoyed’ because of rigid control measures.
‘Freedom’ is not a word that the world associates with covid control.

I question the idea of ankle bracelets for possible isolate at home returnees. If I am not to be trusted to do the right thing and remain at home then perhaps I’d be silly enough to have guests coming and going? How would these providers of ankle bracelet monitoring services police that?

A pretty satisfying performance from the All Blacks last night. Just before the game, the TAB bloke reported that most of the head-to-head money was going on the Wallabies, so the TAB will have had a good night as well.

But why didn’t NZR, knowing a piss-poor crowd was going to be in attendance, give all the rugby clubs in Auckland an allocation of free tickets to give away? The gate was going to be poor anyway, so why not fill the stadium with families who might never otherwise get the chance to see the All Blacks play?

Akira Ioane came of age at number 6 for the All Blacks last night, the niggle was gone and he concentrated on his own strong came including revealing himself as a force in the lineout. Good on the coaches that got through to him. Reiko showed how a straight-running centre with a strong passing game and speed makes a difference. The Wallabies should never have given the AB’s the bone that they were going to bring in enforcers as it never works.
Basic straight running rugby at speed.
My man of the match last week was would have been Seevu Reece, busy all over the park, scoring tries and even entering the ruck, but last night Akira edged him and many other players at their brilliant best.

  Yeah, it’s not the first time I’ve seen the term ‘beloved’ used to describe some media personality. Someone should really point them to a dictionary and tell them to check out the definition of ‘beloved’ – it’s actually a pretty high bar.
  
  As you say, Jenny-May Clarkson may well be a good person, a great wife, caring mother, and so on … but that doesn’t equate to being dearly loved, or dear to the heart. For me personally, the shine went off her when she asked the Silver Ferns captain, straight on top of a heartbreaking loss, if the team had just lost pride in the black dress. ‘Beloved’? Science is a particularly important word. Unlike ‘marriage’, if the word ‘science’ loses or changes its meaning, eg morphing with ‘knowledge’ and ‘facts’, there is no other word or phrase which we can use, in its stead, to mean what ‘science’ has meant. Indeed, all the slightly synonymous words used above – science, knowledge, truth, facts, claims, information – may all be coming to mean ‘beliefs’. In other words, all these nuanced words – with their underlying objectivity – may be lost in favour of post-modern subjectivity.

  Hopefully what is happening now with the promotion of Maori knowledge and myths as science will end, as all fads end. But I am uncertain.
  
  For it to end, cancel culture will need to end. Government agencies collectively employ hundreds of scientists. But if they speak out their careers will be destroyed.
  
  The only thing that will turn this around in New Zealand in the next 10 years is a government with material influence by ACT.
  
  Meanwhile if you have children, send them to the best private school you can afford. If that is not possible, at least pay for a science tutor. I mean a real one.

    I think we have a real problem here.
    
    “Science” is different from “knowledge”. It is a process for developing knowledge. Thus we have “scientific knowledge”, knowledge developed by use of the scientific method, and “mātauranga” i.e., “Māori knowledge – the body of knowledge originating from Māori ancestors, including the Māori world view and perspectives, Māori creativity and cultural practices.”
    
    These aren’t the same, and in fact can be in direct opposition.
    
    All cultures have their equivalent of mātauranga to a greater or lesser extent, and cultural knowledge changes as the culture changes.
    
    And therein lie the difference. The scientific method may have been misused in the interests of cultural/political interests (e.g., eugenics ) but it is self correcting. Despite attempts to characterise it as ‘western’ it isn’t, and it is universal to the extent it produces the same results regardless of culture.
    
    The fact that the above is beyond the ken of hundreds of academics in NZ is what is concerning. By all means call out misuses of science and draw attention to its limitations, but don’t tell us that we should teach the equivalence of one of our cultural bodies of knowledge to that derived from science. By way of simple example, one works around the world, whereas the other is likely, at best, to be treated with interest.
    
    This is particularly so if you are the Royal Society of NZ. That of any group should be the most sensitive to this issue. That they aren’t suggests NZ needs a new body to be the promoter of Science.

  Yup, as I said last week you need two things for science:
  1) A written language.
  2) Maths.
  
  A written language is required because science requires precise recording of observations, theories etc so that they can be discussed and assessed properly. Unwritten languages are inherently imprecise.
  
  Maths is required too. Any “science” that does not use some maths is not worthy of being called science. And no, just counting is not science. Nor is having a spacial reference system like East/West/North/South. Any science of merit requires at least something as complicated as multiplication, division and square roots – none of which were present in traditional Maori toolboxes.

Local Community facebook page has raised concerns about Auckland Council’s latest environment committee meeting which proposes fast tracking of transport changes to meet their 2030 climate goals.

Are we still calling people who discussed how the UN Agenda 21 was a global plan for radical change in how we live conspiracy theorists?

From the council agenda: “By acheiving it’s 2030 goal Auckland will make a critical contribution to national emissions reduction targets. This will require wide ranging transformation of Auckland’s transport and land use systems”

The facebook page summarised the council meeting as saying “They will create a plan to reduce Auckland’s transport emissions (i.e. vehicle emissions) by 64%.” “Phill Goff (mayor) said “This will require the biggest transformation this council has ever required to make… it will involve the highest cost we’ve ever been asked to impose on our constituents.” (at 46:15 in the video below). He also said “We’re actually talking about billions of dollars!” (at 48.15).
Shane Henderson also talked extensively about the Henderson trial. The best quote is “The community don’t understand why we need to do some drastic stuff that will inconvenience people” (at 14:25).” It was also suggested that parliament pass an enabling act giving the council greater power.

I was just listening to Scott Adams comments on falling birth rates and the failing system of child raising in America. https://youtu.be/PKapTTzrhdU
His point is that western society has made child raising too hard for mothers. Instead of them walking, biking or busing we take up to 3 hours a day driving our kids to schools that are basically socialist indoctrination camps. Teachers then send the kids home with hours of homework to supervise because they can’t teach at school.
Compare this with 40 years ago when kids got home and did their own thing.
Working mothers never get a break, their kids have to go from school to child care to be picked up as mum gets home from work, then supervised as mum cooks dinner.
Why would anyone want to do that?

I read on the Ministry of Health’s website that they have “agreed to purchase” 10,72 million doses of the Novavax vaccine, with a suggestion it would be available this year still.
What does it mean, and what is the plan?
If Novavax turns out to be a more effectice vaccine than the ohers (early indications are that it could well be) will we have a choice as to which one we receive?

        I’ve seen more of the world than most, and won’t lose any sleep if I see out my days here in New Zealand, but I don’t believe for a minute that the Pfizer vaccine will be the vaccine of choice by the end of the year.
        
        There are already more promising vaccines emerging, including the Novavax which even this useless government has ordered. Maybe that one will be more efficacious, longer-lasting, and safer. But if not, it’s still all good while I have the ability to decide what goes into my body.

    In theory, the Corona viruses are quite distinct from the Influenza viruses and *should* not evolve quite so rapidly as to need annual vaccine updates. There’s an initial burst of evolution in the virus as it gets exposed to natural evolution in its human host – something different from the lab environment it was adapted in.
    
    That evolution will most probably drive transmissibility and reduce lethality, but not necessarily. Transmission is the initial key, enhancing spread is what will drive it to start with, hence the “delta” and supposed “lambda” variants will spread better and faster.
    
    At some point relative stability will be reached, and as the BCV’s are a single unit virus unlike flu, future evolution *should* be a lot slower and thus reduce the need for vaccine updates.
    
    Be interesting to see if the Novavax vaccine does provide bette, more long lasting protection. There’s theoretical reasons to suppose that it will, but the theory in these things is still pretty inexact, longer term studies are needed to show this. However, it being a non-mRNA vaccine should reduce the rather too frequent serious side effects.
    
    As I understand it, the mRNA vaccine is injected into muscle, and the mRNA is supposed to enter cells in that vicinity and promote the expression of spike proteins which will display on the surface of those cells, setting off an immune reaction which will kill those cells and establish an immune reaction for future exposure to the same protein (presumably from an actual Covid virus infection). In some people however the mRNA spreads beyond the immediate injection site (maybe injected to close to a blood vessel or lymph channel ?) and migrates elsewhere. If blood carried, it goes pretty immediately to the heart where expression of the viral protein leads to an often serious and sometimes fatal immune reaction to the heart muscle cells – this is the myocarditis and pericarditis that is one of the most serious side effects from these vaccines. Other issues arise if the protein is expressed in the brain or other organs. If this is essentially a “mechanical” issue, that is depends on the exact injection site, it is probably not readily addressable unless an alternative delivery mechanism can be designed. As noted, Novavax uses nano-particle contained proteins that should not promote auto-immune issues, but this will no doubt be clarified as it the trials are completed.

      Still unsure. But I don’t think I’ve seen the media report on any of the side effects in NZ. . From the most recent July 21 covid medsafe safety report:
      
      “There were 559 non-serious and 13 serious reports this week. Sadly, one of these serious reports reported on a death.”
      
      20 people died after the vaccine in nz.
      Medsafe says 15 are *unlikely* to be related to the vaccine?! But they give no details of the actual cause of death so we can see trends, how long after the vaccine, nor any details about the dead patients age or preexsiting medical conditions. 2 of the dead are described as insufficent info and 3 are under investigation.
      
      The other serious conditions 21 Anaphylaxisis, less than 6 heart attack, 19 heart inflamation, embolisms and deep vein thrombosis 21, stroke 15, and 25 facial paralysis.
      
      But I haven’t seen any discussion in the media from doctors of these outcomes. I havent seen the media cover the efficacy issues of the pfizer vax from the Mayo clinic.       It is the nature of these spike proteins that concerns me most. Pfizer did not undertake reproductive toxicity nor genotoxicity (DNA mutation) studies, and these are considered critical when developing a new drug or vaccine for human use. It took a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) access to Pfizer’s biodistribution study from the Japanese regulatory agency, and this study revealed that the majority of the mRNA initially remains near the injection site (which is what Pfizer assert), but within hours become widely distributed within the body (which Pfizer is silent on).

        Cmm, not quite correct, “colds” as such are caused by at least 3 families of viruses, Adenoviruses, Rhinoviruses, and Beta Corona Viruses (BCVs). It is estimated that around 20% or so of actual colds are caused by the BCV element. These are related to but not particularly close to Covid; and it is estimated that some people have derived a degree of immunity to Covid from having had a BCV caused cold. Not sure how well founded that last is though, haven’t seen any papers on it.
        
        I think it would be possible to derive a vaccine against the cold causing BCV, but economically it has not made sense before. A vaccine is expensive to develop, and it might be a hard sell to make a success of a vaccine that protects against only 20% of colds. And as colds are almost completely non-lethal there’s little other incentive to develop such a vaccine.
        
        I believe that the Rhinoviruses are hyper variable rather similar to flu, not sure about the Adeno family though. A general cold vaccine probably would be successful, but that would need to combine at least 3 elements to cover enough of the causes, that might be much harder and a lot more expensive to produce, if it could be done effectively.

    what if you get pfizer, ideally a month or two before border opening to maximize its quickly abating protection, and then catch a low impact dose of covid (as seems likely with high R delta variant, maybe 70-80% of population will catch it?) – does having covid under those circumstances give you better long term immunity than the vaccines?

Speaking with a friend after Mass this morning.

Her and her partner bought an absolutely gawjus 3 story Victorian Villa in Grey Lynn a couple of years ago. Used to be some sort of ‘half-way house’ back in the day. Obviously had millions spent on it since then. It’s been fully restored to its former glory.

She was saying they’re really looking to forward to the new local series’ The Panthers’….screening Sundays on TVOne. Traces the history of the area during the 70’s. Julia said it would be interesting to know where the outdoor scenes were shot.
They never noticed any film-crews in their street.

Have a look at the Cancer Society’s website. It has gone full woke. Still does good work (I know the Society well) but it now embraces the Treaty (actually Te Tiriti) and the usual “institutional racism” nonsense. Still accepts money from all the people it’s calling racists though!

Anyone with half a brain could have predicted this…so the next thing is, what to we do about it?

Do we essentially wall it off and let it die?

FWIW, Here’s my suggestion.

The US has to own up to the obvious. What they did, did nothing. What has to happen is the US has to work with the Arab World, and the Russians. A joint NATO/Russian operation, with broad Arab support with the goal of wiping the Taliban from the face of the earth.

After the Soviet Misadventure in the 80’s, there would be an appetite for this.

China can’t complain after its treatment of the Uighers, but at the same time, the US can come out in full support of that group.

The Taliban have stated that their ultimate goal is to conquer the world. Perhaps the world needs to conquer them.

The US and other foreign nationals should all pull out of Afghanistan and leave them to it.

The Afghan govt/army is just as corrupt as the Taliban with some of them changing sides that you start to wonder who are the good and bad guys.

Of course the worlds media will show us images of innocent men, woman, and children dying and suffering at the hands of the Taliban and the humanitarians and hypocrite lefties demanding the US and UK send their military to that region to get sucked into another conflict.

I remember when

Did Janet Wilson’s article in stuff las weekend get the attention it deserved.
‘Does last weekend’s apology foreshadow another one?’
Basically it compared the Labour Government’s apology for the Dawn Raids, with their treatment of worker visa holders during covid lockdowns.
The circumstances are very similar, being protection of New Zealand workers in a period of high unemployment.
The first was the Dawn Raids which were while National were in power.
Naturally, this makes a Labour apology much more meaningful and necessary.
The need is made essential by the fact that those affected are also Labour voters.
Just to make sure the required result is guaranteed, seasonal workers from Tonga, Samoa and Vanuatu are to be allowed in without MIQ.
Little sad about the treatment of the worker visa holders (fortunately most with never become voters), but we can look like we are trying to do the right thing and appeal to the ‘racist’ voter at the same time.
We don’t like to do this but it will help our housing (189,000 temporary work visa-holders can be deported/allowed to return home), unemployment figures, maintain higher wages and hopefully encourage reduction of cow numbers.
To be honest if it wasn’t being done by a Labour (caring Government) the media would be all over it.

  I was reading about the 1st Earl of Auckland yesterday and it seems he made a right mess of Afghanistan. Long before the USSR, America & the Teliban.
  Eden Park, Mt Eden were also named after the useless bastard.
  Auckland Islands were named after his father who at least showed a bit of interest in the area.

I’m vaccinated with first dose now, and , second dose appointment available 3 weeks to the day.
