Auckland truck driver visited Manawatu tests positive for Covid -19 .
Will this be the final nail that closes the door on the elimination of Covid – 19 or will Jacinda Ardern our Prime Minister’s luck, not good management stop the Delta strain from reaching the small Towns and Community’s of New Zealand.
Thirteen new locations of interest including Supermarkets, Service Stations and Burger King are among the locations of interest, after a truck driver who traveled to Palmerston North tests positive.

While I do not wish Covid on anyone this is a long time coming the sooner it happens the better we will deal with it as it would be interesting to get the figures on how many morare seeking help from our Health Service for Mental Health caused by continuing lockdowns.

  Each month we’ve had about 230 cases of Covid, on average, for the past 18 months. The idea that we are suddenly going to eliminate the virus would be hilarious were it not for the severe strain, including job losses and business closures, that many people are under due to the restrictions.
  
  The good news is that only 260 people have been hospitalised due to Covid. That is fewer than the number of people that have reportedly suffered serious side-effects from the vaccine. Furthermore, 260 people out of a population of 5,122,600 (according to Stats NZ) means that 99.995% of the population has NOT been hospitalised.
  
  People need to stop panicking.

        There has not been enough biographical treatment of Sir John yet. He has had only one biographer so far, I don’t know if he is interested in leave memoirs. It is too soon to make a measured assessment of his life and political impact – he is far from retired yet, in any event.
        The quirks I have described are generally pretty harmless ones, except for Kirk’s and Lange’s.

So only 7% of the 7 ‘suburbs of interest’ have been tested in the past week or so, despite the big push. Suspect reasons include downsides of family going into lockup, a lot of unwanted attention on the household, possibly financial issues if no work, and a big dose of FUD. Most of the FUD generated by the government and its experts.

If they have no or only mild potential symptoms, and a brain, why would they rock up for a test?

It must be quite a temptation to God to have a motorbike gang-member infect Modern Moses (“Let my people go”) Brian Tamaki with covid.
Not only for his selfish assembly and disgracefully saying “And as we know behind me is the Cenotaph that says very clearly in World War ll the soldiers died – they sacrificed their lives to protect every New Zealander’s right to freedom” [1] but God may be tempted too remembering Brian’s condemnation of homosexuals, even naming two in Christchurch, for the Kaikoura earthquake, after Tamaki misread Genesis, and claimed the soil called out to God, when it was actually slain Abel’s blood that did the calling, and that the land spewed forth (an earthquake) the tribe the other Moses sought to replace in the Promised Land, but the Bible records no quake as those people were slaughtered in a more traditional manner.

Benedict Yu, a typically helpful contributor, made an interesting comment yesterday that the total percentage of New Zealanders getting vaccinated is not as relevant as the percentage in the over 65 age group who are vaccinated. He is right.
He referred to Health Ministry figures showing that over 90% of over 65’s are already vaccinated and that of the over 50’s around 85% are vaccinated. These are first jab only figures. Those over 65 years fully vaccinated is 82% and over 50 years – 69% approximately.

Looking at the USA with similar age profiles to us but with fewer lockdown restrictions the Covid mortality rate for the over 50 years is 94.2% and the over 65 years is 77%.

In the USA of the 5.8% below the age of 50 years who have died a very high percentage of them had co-morbidities. Of the 610 deaths among those under 45 years 97% of them had a co-morbidity. The reality is there have been almost zero deaths among young people in any country under 45 – 50 years of age. These numbers come from a website – Worldometer – which seems to use authentic data.

It is becoming increasingly evident that the Delta variant is at least 50% more transmissible than the other variants and is significantly more deadly. Vaccines do not stop the spread of Delta but do seem to reduce slightly its severity, levels of hospitalisations and deaths. For over 50 year olds the vaccines offer useful but, nowhere absolute levels of protection. Focusing vaccination on under 50 year olds would appear to be a waste of resources.

One aspect of the statistics that does not get adequate coverage is the question to what extent is Covid simply brings forward weekly death rates. With most deaths in the higher age brackets it is worth analysing the weekly numbers to see what happens after a Covid peak. In the UK where statistics are published on a weekly basis it is very evident that after the peak the weekly death number fall below the average of the previous three years. In some weeks after the peak death numbers are 20% below the average and that without allowing for a steadily growing population.
In other words total deaths are not quite as bad as they seem – they are just happening prematurely. See the Office for National Statistics, UK.

Go forward plans released by National and ACT this last week cover most issues well but there is a strong case for focusing more on the older age groups and on producing comprehensive treatment regimes centred around their particular needs. There are many tools than could be part of a treatment package that would offer a degree of protection for the aged and any immune-compromised.

Otherwise open the doors and shut down the daily party political broadcast.

  No it certainly is not. It is more transmissable but significantly less deadly. The Public Health England stats show IFR of 0.2% compared to 1.9% for the earlier strains.
  
  The stats coming from some countries official bodies are now completely untrustworthy. PHE is to be commended for publishing data that shows inconvenient truths. The rates of infection among the vaccinated is another thing that PHE is being honest about.
  
  The figures coming out of the USA under the Biden administration are especially untrustworthy.
  
  By the way, I am sure you didn’t mean to say this:

  94.2% of people over 50 who get Covid, die of it????
  
  Even if you mean that the SURVIVAL rate is 94.2%, I think this is too low and is the result of manipulated statistics with deaths “with positive Covid PCR test” being emphasized to the max and no account taken of coincidental deaths or whether there is even excess mortality.
  
  By the way, everyone has the “coincidental deaths” principle rammed down their throats all the time about post-jab deaths – having things both ways mucho?

      It MAY produce an increase in deaths for two reasons: relaxation of restrictions, ignorant high-risk behavior (which is NOT being identified or the public being educated by the officials), and the increased transmissability of Delta, might add up to more deaths, only because of many more SEVERE infections.
      
      The mild and asymptomatic infections should be regarded as GOOD news. The more people get natural immunity the better – the trick is to halt the deaths and the ICU admissions, not to destroy life and health itself in a poorly advised attempt to “eliminate the virus”.

  Is Delta more deadly? If so it would be the first virus that mutated into something both more infectious and more deadly (if one could call <1% deadly). And the more infectious need to be qualified. It seems almost all cases are where they have had close contact inside for some time. Breathing stale air stuff. Definitely not passing someone in the street passes it on. So all those ineffective masks worn as a sign of piety to St Jacinda aren't needed.

    I think you could argue that Delta is more deadly on the basis it is more easily transmitted. The Viral Load in patients is 1000 times higher so the disease spreads easier.
    
    The disease itself is probably no less deadly, but how it now operated is what makes it so much more of a threat.

    I don’t know whether delta is more deadly or not but the contention that viruses only mutate one way, less deadly,is wrong. The 1918-19 Spanish flu was a more deadly version of a relatively benign disease which circulated around American army camps in 1917

    I should have made the point more clearly. Delta is not more deadly when comparing virus for virus. However because of its faster rate of transmission and more people exposed to it the number of deaths involved is greater than other variants.
    
    I fully concur that Covid is not to be feared. The fear factor is hugely overblown by so called experts and a sensational seeking media. We just need to take sensible steps to limit the exposure that older folk and immune-compromised people have to what is a bad dose of the flu.

  In the UK where statistics are published on a weekly basis it is very evident that after the peak the weekly death number fall below the average of the previous three years. In some weeks after the peak death numbers are 20% below the average and that without allowing for a steadily growing population.

  The reliability of Covid-19 mortality statistics, an example from England:
  
  “(…)Dr Susan Hopkins, Public Health England’s incident director, said: “Although it may seem straightforward, there is no WHO agreed method of counting deaths from Covid-19. In England, we count all those that have died who had a positive Covid-19 test at any point, to ensure our data is as complete as possible(…)”.
  
  Admittedly, the above is more than 1 year old but how much has changed since? Are standards in other countries any higher? Have Covid-19 attributed deaths been routinely confirmed by post-mortems?
  
  There’s so much contradictory information coming from all sides on this highly politicized disease that we’ll probably never know what its true mortality is. Even the excess death count doesn’t provide a clear picture as it is clouded by the deaths caused by other illnesses, which had not been addressed because of various Covid related restrictions.

    There is a quandary I have on how anyone can produce accurate statistics of deaths “due to Covid-19”. This is because it appears that no-one actually dies from Covid-19 by itself.
    
    The problem occurs where an individual has a state of ill-health (co-morbidities) and contracting Covid-19 appears to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
    
    The same principle has applied to normal flu in the past, where in New Zealand over 650 people died every year, attributed to “the flu”.
    
    A healthy person will deal with Covid-19. An already sick person may succumb to their co-morbidity, only assisted by Covid-19, not because of.
    
    So the fundamental strategy should be making people healthier, encouraging living lifestyles that promote good health.
    
    Vaccination alone is proving insufficient to control the disease around the world, even in developed countries. It’s time to look at the bigger picture.

  I don’t think delta is more deadly. We have over a thousand cases the media say and one death. One 94 year old with serious co – morbidities.
  
  Regarding the age profile when you look at the deaths attributed to Covid in the United States, 95% of those are aged 50 and over. When you look at 0 to 17, something like 400 people have died of Covid in the whole United States. As a percentage of total Covid deaths the calculator works it out to be zero.
  
  So I agree with Tom Toddy. Look after the older people. Stop locking down young people and children for whom Covid poses very little risk. The healthy 25 year old should be let out to go about their business.
  
  Unfortunately this government has learned nothing since March 2020.

  Mortality rate of 94.2%? AFAIK only about 4% of over 75s that are infected die, and almost certainly these will also be those with comorbidities.
  
  Second, I’m interested in your sources of the assertion that delta is more deadly. Everything I’ve read outside MSM (which has an agenda) says the opposite : more transmissible but way less deadly. We have had 1000+ cases here this outbreak and one death of an over 90 yr old who was already very ill. And with low vax levels too.

  Today, just over 34 percent of the US population is aged 50
  16.5 % is 65
  The current population of the United States of America is 333,426,623 as of Saturday, October 2, 2021, based on Worldometer elaboration of the latest United Nations data.
  So those over 50 are 113,365,052 and 94.2% dead would be 106,789,879
  And those over 65 are 55,015,393 and 77% of them dead is 42,361,852
  So 58,349,659 the 50–65 bracket dead is 64,428,027
  
  Meaning 6,078,368 more people would die in the 50–65 bracket, than there are people in that bracket. Bugger – that’s if my calculator is right and I haven’t fat-fingered the figures, it does not “compute”
  
  Tomtoddy, while I definitely agree that the vaccination effort should ensure the elderly (Elders for Maori) should be as entirely vaccinated as far as medical conditions allow, and I have up-ticked your comment of course, something in the detail is a little up the chute.

    You are right Yvette to correct the language used. I should have been clearer. I was quoting official reports but didnt check the language.
    
    The authorities claim that 687,172 people have died from Covid. We can debate that because we all know that someone with a cold getting run over by a bus can get labelled a Covid victim especially if the hospital involved gets a cash handout for showing it death by Covid.
    
    However it is the official figure and doesnt change the percentages. Of those 687,172 recorded deaths 94.21% were over 50 years and 76.86% were over 65 years.
    
    The point I was trying to make is that this is an issue for older folk and immune-compromised that could be fixed by having a treatment regime that focuses on those cohorts. The rest of us should just get on with life.

  I don’t think so. It’s so transmissible it struggles to leave Auckland LOL. And even in Auckland there’s been almost 1300 cases in a population of 1.6 million. That means that 99.92% of Aucklanders haven’t caught the virus.
  
  As for being deadly, we’ve had one death – an elderly woman (in her 90s) with pre-existing health conditions – among the 1295 cases.

  1.If you don’t have near instant recall of the times tables you are wasting your time, no matter how many calculators and devices you may have.
  2. If there is no streaming or grouping the more capable ones will become so bored they will burn down the classroom.
  3. The rote learning that is required to get started is so unfashionable in NZ that it will probably never occur.
  4 Algebra should be restricted to the most able students only.
  5 At primary school what is now called maths is only arithmetic.
  6 Statistics in NZ schools is really social studies in disguise. Real statistics is quite complex.

    When people reach for a calculator to multiply by ten then you know they have absolutely no understanding of what numbers mean. Unfortunately there are far too many of those.
    
    Statistics is an interesting subject because it is one are where it is very difficult to build an intuitive feeling for what is going on. Even people with PhDs in stats will seldom get things right by intuition.
    
    Unfortunately statistics is required for almost all research (proper research that is) and very few people doing research have enough training to use the tools properly and make very fundamental mistakes like using the wrong tools for the data they have (eg. tools intended for normal distribution when the data are highly skewed).

It wasn’t part of the curriculum or something. She commented to a teacher that the roles had reversed – parents were teaching kids at home while the teachers were taking us on trips to the museum, etc.

Very simple calc but each time she has got the answer incorrect usualy because she not following the rules. Non brackets/Brackets etc. Another friend and i have decided not to shame her but are pleased she will be retiring after 30 years.

  There are very few good maths teachers and I’ll wager that all of those are NOT using the methods they were taught in teacher’s training college.
  
  I was fortunate to have an excellent maths teacher (though I was pretty gifted in maths at school and did not need him. He often had new kids coming into his class getting 20% and within a few months they’d be getting 70%.
  
  His method was based on the understanding that the same concept can be taught in many ways.
  
  Most teachers would just explain the one way that is in the text book. If that did not get through then try again – and of course that does not get through either.
  
  Not this guy. He had at least three ways to explain each concept. If anyone still did not understand after that then he’d get one of the other kids (usually me) to explain to the guy that didn’t get it. He would watch and make notes and tweak his explanations for the next year.

  Wokist nonsense! Few people, including Maori, can understand Maori well. Maori has no mathematical tradition. Unwritten languages lack precision and mathematics requires precision.     I had a grasp on numbers at an early stage – primary school. My 1967 School Cert result in math was quite high (don’t remember what) At that stage I could multiply 4 numbers against 4 numbers in my head. This is why I instantly know if a result is any where near correct or just rubbish.
    Eg: 95% of the pop to be vaccinated. Kids under 12 (15% of the pop) are not vaccinated therefore the 90% is impossible. Now Labour say they meant 95% of those illegible, but they never admit their mistake. Shit, at work guys half my age get out a calculator, show me the result, then I show them the answer written in engineers chalk. Beat them hands down every time.
    Bottom line is the teachers of today are useless lazy shits

    I went to Teacher’s training College at age 40 to train for secondary teaching (after years working as a plant ecologist and Science editor). My intention was to teach Maths & biology.
    The maths instruction/guidance at the TTC was appalling as far as I was concerned and I quickly opted out of that segment of the course.
    
    The approach was pretty much for each trainee 2ndry teacher to come to each lesson with some mathematical game they could amuse the rest of us with. There was no consideration of the most effective ways to deliver the curriculum.
    
    I always knew my strength in teaching would not be in maths because I didn’t have a great range of strategies for teaching maths concepts and that’s what I thought the training college would be covering in a formal sense – not in the bumbling manner that I observed.
    
    I found the maths lecturer couldn’t explain clearly what he was trying to achieve….and if he couldn’t get through to someone like me with a science background and a basic competency of secondary school maths (1 have one stage 1 Uni paper in modern maths), then I suspect he left all the primary School trainees in the dark (most would have only completed Yr 12 – NCEA level 2).

      I would disagree to an extent.
      
      All languages have words (symbols) and grammars (relationships between the symbols to construct ideas).
      
      Written languages have more precise definitions of symbols and grammars. They also have a richer set of symbols.
      
      Thus, written languages are useful where precision is required: maths, science, law etc.
      
      Without maths, science and the rule of law there is no progress, democracy and all we hold dear.
      
      Even more, the precision is required for thinking and discussing ideas because we think in symbolically.
      
      Unwritten languages have imprecise word meanings and imprecise grammars. It is impossible to develop precise thoughts (or convey them) using fuzzy symbols.
      
      This means unwritten languages are useless for maths, science, law and such.
      
      Without these these there is no modern society and such. Primitive law the world over is the same: the guy with the biggest club makes the laws.
      
      It is no surprise to me that Maorification is happening. This is a way to erode society and fits in with all the nonsense about redefining words and genders etc.
      
      Tear up logic and law and we’re easy to control.

  Maggy , as soon as I read that maths is in trouble in NZ, the first thought I had was yes this has been well researched and known for some time.
  
  My second thought was that the inability to analyse data by our local black hole now “modellers” of renown like Hendy demonstrates how low our maths standards have been lowered.
  
  No doubt in the future a new maths will exist like societal maths or artistic maths. The solutions will be subjective and targets of objective facts a part of new colonial historical maths.

  CV19 has not caused supply chain issues. It has mainly been the response to the CV19 that has.
  
  This applies not only to manufacturing and transportation, but a more wider definition of supply chain – including the delivery of services.
  
  The bodies that were stored in freezer trucks in NYC were not because of a massive increase in the body supply (ie. many more people dying), but mainly a disruption in the body disposal supply chain (burials etc).

Covid lockdown protests. About time there was another ‘Bishop in the Dock’ for undermining efforts to deal with Covid. Many years ago Auckland’s Catholic Bishop Liston (later Archbishop Liston) was put on trial for sedition for comments he made about Ireland and was acquitted (after complaints by Mayor Gunson and The Herald). However Brian Tamaki is not a real bishop, as far as I know, he has never been consecrated by real Bishops.

  I’m not involved with Tamaki or any religion for that matter but what he did IMO was draw this Govt’s attention to the fact that Cindy’s gloss and BS have worn off. In that, he achieved what he set out to achieve.
  The protest gained wide MSM dissemination and a variety of comments. Some good, some bad and some plainly ridiculous.
  As for not being a real Bishop, who cares? It’s a bit like being a Climate Scientist where they don’t know or understand the first thing about the climate but whenever they open their mouths or write something favourable to the cause, they are automatically a Scientist.

A few thoughts on Brian Tamaki’s rally held yesterday in the Auckland Domain.
Whilst I agree with his doing this I think his timing is wrong. This has now given Ardern and Co the excuse to keep Auckland under lockdown for even longer. They now have someone to blame. I understand that the Police Commissioner Coster was contacted by Brian Tamaki who said that he could hold his rally under level3 rules. I think this may have been a bit of a setup. In fact watching the TVNZ segment the reporter virtually reported that this rally was going to be a ‘Super Spreader and that lockdown will continue. Ardern probably cannot believe her luck. Just a couple of days after her precious gang friends were doing as they liked at a funeral in West Auckland and people were starting to wake up to the fact they they were being locked down because of gang behaviour in spreading the virus and getting annoyed about the fact that Ardern never calls out the gangs for anything she gets another pass.

In todays press conference Dr Ashley Bloomfield has announced a further 27 deaths from heart disease across the motu. This is again higher than the average 1 New Zealander that dies every 90 minutes of heart disease. Bloomfield says that all but 1 case had been linked back to excessive life style choices.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has pleaded with New Zealanders to get to their GPs to get BMIs recorded and to adopt the 150g pureed vege diet. Ardern says she hasnt ruled out BMI passports to allow monthly purchases of fastfood or alcohol. ‘We need to think about people that need treatment for things like cancer or COVID and if you continue to ignore your BMI you are putting extra pressure on our hospitals and are in my opinion a very selfish person. Youre killing those that medically cant afford to lose weight, so Im pleading for you to get BMI’ed and tell your whanau to do the same’. The PM has had her first BMI, but ministers Robertson and Faafoi were unavailable for comment on their status. Buses offering family packs of KFC are being deployed in some regions to encourage a change of lifestyke choice. PM Ardern has not ruled out domestic fridge spot checks by army or police, which is something well within the powers of the DG of Health and something in the interest of all people across the motu. Extra BMI testing stations have been set up in areas where there is high concentrations of lard in wastewater or where toilets have been blocked according to Ardern. There will be an update on level 4 obesity restrictions in Monday fortnight.

Bob Smith from Tauranga says he has been unable to get his weekly pack of fried chicken as he refuses to get his BMI done at the doctors. ‘My mates wont talk to me, they say that their granny cant get her cancer care because of selfish people like me’

Bloomfield acknowledged the mental health problems from the lifestyle changes and said to help they will pretend that heart disease doesnt exist next month and focus on cancer for a month instead.

180,000 people living with heart disease and 1 death every 90 minutes. Please tell me Ardern, Robertson, hipkins and Bloomfield what are you pro actively doing about this? It doesnt seem to be a priority of yours or any other government? Why doesnt Simon Dallow put on the serious face and talk about the deadly heart disease epidemic? Why isnt their wall to wall advertising campaigns on it to help spread the message and help our poor impartial media? Why arent you invading our liberties on this to take pressure off hospitals?

Anyone who has been around the beltway for a while knows that governments centralise / decentralise / rinse and repeat. There can be plausible reasons like economies of scale on the one hand, local community involvement on the other, but changing is an expensive business on many fronts. And the efficacy lies mainly in the ongoing execution. Removing targets, or replacing them with current or future fluff, doesn’t help even if they are published, measured, reported.

Currently in the mix is ethnicity and a desperate rush to firmly bed in policies while there is an absolute majority – government by the representatives the country voted for. DHBs, social housing, three waters, local government wards. No surprises at the direction then. Democracy in action.

  Supply chains are an interesting business, especially in the electronics sector.
  
  The electronics supply system delivers amazingly complex components at ridiculously low prices.
  
  Consider just the simplest component – a surface mount resistor (one of the tiny grey bumps on an electronics board). Each one is manufactured and checked to be within 1% or so tolerance and they can be bought for a small fraction of 1 cent. That tiny price must pay for the materials, the factory, keeping the lights on, the factory staff and the costs of the supply chain (transport, marketing people etc).
  
  More complex items like computer chips might cost only 2 or 3 cents.
  
  A finely tuned machine that can deliver that does not have much margin for disturbance.
  
  Demand has spiked, partially driven by people spending on electronics due to more people wanting webcams & computers for Zoom as well as splurging entertainment dollars on home electronics rather than going to the movies.
  
  Simultaneously four things happened on the supply side:
  * Factories shut down for a bit.
  * There was a massively incorrect prediction that demand would slump, so many factories dialed back their production for three months or so.
  * There were fires in three critical factories that knocked them out.
  * As the shortage loomed, most buyers over bought to try to protect themselves from a shortage causing a toilet-paper style shortage.
  
  We’re now in the position where components that were available with a 2 week lead time are now on a 18 month lead time (or worse). And the prices have gone up too: some 50 cent components are now $30. On some of the projects I am working on, the parts cost for the system has gone from $20 to $200 and we’re only expecting to be able to order parts at more sane prices in 2023.
  
  They’re now building factories like mad, but these take a long time to come on line. When they do kick in, likely two things will happen:
  * There will be an oversupply.
  * The oversupply will be exacerbated because those that were hoarding parts will stop ordering as they cut back their inventories.
  
  So in 2023/4 we can expect a lot of semiconductor companies to really feel the pinch and some will fail or be bought up for a song.

  I covered some of this in The Shipping News a few days ago and one of the interesting things I found out was this:
  
  Semiconductors are the world’s 4th most traded good after crude oil, refined oil and cars. Strong demand existed before COVID and reflected the chip-intensity of 5G, AI, electric vehicles (3-5x the chip content of ICE cars) and the internet of things. Current chip shortages are mostly related to older and simpler 200-nm silicon wafers used in cars, computers, monitors, laptops, TVs, refrigerators and washing machines. Demand for many of these items soared during the pandemic as people built out home offices and related projects
  
  If you’re wondering what “older and simpler” chips means, the latest ones going into laptops and such are ones with 3nm (nanometres) thick “wiring”. The 200nm jobs are perfectly fine for non-IT devices or some functions within a computer. Being older of course they’re also more common, cheaper and less profitable, which means it’s tough to expand factory manufacturing of them.
  
  I was also amused by the market reaction to the cross-Pacific container rates, as people shove empty containers back to China to take advantage of the higher West-East rates – leaving US warehouse filled with export goods, which also take up space that could be used for imports.

Interesting study in Israel comparing protection offered by infection with COVID vs protection offered by the Pfizer vaccine.

Conclusion.. Those vaccinated accinees had a 13-fold increased risk for breakthrough infection with the Delta variant compared to those previously infected.

This is very significant. If the trend is maintained over time it points to only two scenarios.

The first is that ALL vaccinated people will eventually be infected and then be provided with long lasting immunity.

The second scenario, in New Zealand at least, is the government tries to hold off the inevitable by endless restrictions in an attempt to stop the virus becoming endemic. These restrictions will be required forever.

There is no rate of vaccination in New Zealand that will stop the continued spread of COVID.

  Yes the primary gain of vaccination lies in protecting the vulnerable from getting severe covid (and/or death) upon infection (and the civil consequences of too many of them doing so at once). Below 30 or so, the risks start to get quite low.

  Confident prediction: contacts of this nature result in asymptomatic infection (if they result in infection at all) and this is a good thing.
  
  All this anal tracing of fleeting contacts is a colossal waste of resources. All that is needed is to prevent the prolonged periods sharing insufficiently fresh indoors air – then NO-ONE will die, and the spread of infection will merely confer natural immunity.

There are a couple of articles in yesterday’s DP decrying the rise of modern slavery in NZ and how we must all strive to defeat it.

Well and good, but not a single mention that those offended against are virtually all from India or thereabouts; nor that the offenders are likewise virtually all from India (or Fiji).

It really gets on my tits when other cultures look to replicate their exploitative power structures in NZ.

      No, they’re not. As it says very clearly in the linked article, they will be kept in home detention and made to do community work, and one of them is also required to pay a fine.
      
      If you see the purpose of prison as keeping the public safe, home detention will have the same effect.
      
      However, in both cases the effect only lasts for a limited period, and then the perps are out and again at liberty in the community. Is it your contention that having been in prison is likely to make them into better people?

        One would hope that a prison term would make other people think twice before committing tha same crime. Home detention is not nearly as much of a detergent in my opinion.

        Yes info, one might hope so. It certainly deters me from committing crimes. But then – I have a nice home to live in, and a family that doesn’t abuse me, and a worthwhile job that pays well, and enough money, education and opportunities to be able to pass my leisure time in enjoyable ways. The prospect of prison won’t have the same deterrent effect on people who have none of the above to be deprived of. And once there, they are likely to be exposed to bad influences, and they’ll have no means to resist them.
        
        Prison has been described as an expensive way to make bad people worse, and I think there’s a great deal in that.

TBH, I didn’t even know where the town was, so did a little quick research. Seems a similar attack took place there by rival gangs nearly 200 years ago to the day!

From what I was able to glean, these days Otorohanga (pop 3000) is known for it’s 24/7 McDonalds…. and two Liquor Stores.

I blame the All Black loss this morning on 3 things:

1. Poor selections – the 6 Akira Ioane made 6 tackles in 80 minutes for example and the replacement hooker Amura was out of his depth at line out and scrum plus Perenarar was too slow when he came on.
2.Poor coaching bracketed with
3 Poor Captaincy.

re 2 & 3 – when the Boks botched the kickoff in the 78 or 79 minute and Savea made a good burst from the scrum on half way the ball should have been given to Mo’unga from the ruck to put in touch in the Bok 22 75/90 yards from our line, instead we tried to hold it when we were consistently been out muscled at ruck and maul for most of the second half.

I blame Foster, Plumtree, McLeod and Savea for the loss!!!

  It’s a bit unfair singling out Aumua. Our line out struggled all night, with Codie Taylor having an off night with his throwing.
  
  As for the final minutes, the strategy was to keep the ball in hand, but it was poorly executed by the All Black forward who went off his feet at that tackle. You can’t blame the coaches for a player making an error. I thought Savea had his best game as All Black captain, but the loose forwards suffered when Jacobson was subbed off. Savea had been outstanding at #7, but when he moved back to #8 and Blackadder came on, we started to lose the contest for the loose ball. Neither side was helped by refereeing inconsistencies in the final quarter, with the player not rolling away being an Achilles heel of the referee.
  
  In summary, South Africa were the better team in the second half, and deserved the win, but once again, on any given day there’s nothing between the two sides.

    Aumua didn’t go off his feet. A 50/50 call by a ref that had a good game. In fact I’ve been really impressed with the NH refs.
    
    SA deserved it dominating ruck, scrum and line out in second half. Disappointing from our pack.
    
    A lot of inexperienced AB’s on for the last 10 minutes. We’ve got the silverware.

    In my mind Savea is a poor choice as Captain – he never takls to the referee – the yarpies regularly not releasing in the tackle is a clear example, where was Savea – nowhere near the ref.
    
    Trying to retain the ball just never seems to work – we consistently get penalised trying it.

    Don’t know if it was the throwing last night but the ABs struggled in both tests with the lineouts against SA Tony.
    I think the lineout failures lost the game, also the tackler lying over the tackled player and not allowing the ball to be placed was critical despite later in the game the ref started penalising SA for that.
    If both the lineout failures and the many times SA players killed the ball on the ground had not happened NZ could have slipped away with the game much earlier as their backs were far more intrusive and dangerous. Reece and Ioane were electric, the deliberately knocked down ball by SA when Sevu Reece had an overlap would have resulted in a try.
    With that final penalty, the ref indicated a number of the forwards were offside. In retrospect it could be argued holding the line and not rushing the defence at that point was a better strategy.
    Beauden had a good game against a crushing defence and was testing that defence frequently so replacing him late now looks like a mistake as Mounga didn’t fire.
    Bloody great game, however.

  pdm, firstly, Perenara is the worst half back we’ve picked in the last 20 years. Double pumps when passing the ball or takes a pace, has a look whether he should run, then passes. So our first and second receivers always have defenders in their face when they get the ball. Flat defences don’t allow for release delay.
  Secondly, Foster is the worst coach we’ve had since Ivan Vadonovich. Enough said.
  Third, we leak way too many points to win games consistently against the best opposition. An WC games need top notch defence.

    Yes, I hate to say this but if we put the same team on the field tomorrow against the Wallabies, we’d be beaten.
    There’s no excuse for losing that game last night. They had the game in the bag with 1.5mins to go, albeit they didn’t deserve to be in the lead ATT IMO. However, be it as it is, whoever gave away the last penalty should suffer some serious sideline gazing, if not put out to pasture.
    I’m sure the blind institute could have retained the ball for those last 1.5mins with no sideline or coaching intervention whatsoever.

I see on a news item on TV1 last night, that Merck pharmaceuticals have developed a pill that can be taken to treat & minimize the effects of Covid that is in testing now, and may soon be widely available. I wouldn’t mind betting that it is a relaunching of an updated Ivermectin under a new name.
It simply makes sense to self medicate. When we get a cold, we know that it can get serious & has to run it’s course. So what do we do ? We go and get some Coldrex tablets & and nose spray, and these mitigate the effect of the cold so we feel better, and carry on with life. Same with common ‘flu.
Why should Covid Delta or any variant be any different?

    True, I&o, but Vit.C which I am a believer in & have used every day for more years than I can recall, but you do get a considerably higher dose of Vit.C from the tabs than the fruit.   Many of those “colds” are really flu infections that our bodies fight off before they get established and we don’t even resort to Coldrex.
  
  Then there are a bunch of flu infections we consider a cold and will treat with Coldrex.
  
  A much smaller number of flu infections end up bad enough that people go to the doctor and being diagnosed as flu.
  
  And only a tiny number end up going to hospital.
  
  According to the experts (before they stopped talking about flu and started hyping CV19), over a million people in NZ get infected with flu every year.

      I was interested in the new Merck pill when I heard about it on the news last night, but according to Wiki (yeh, I know) a whistle blower was concerned that this type of drug was a mutagen. I notice that the word has been scrubbed from the Wiki page now.
      
      It does say on Wiki that the new drug, “exerts its antiviral action through introduction of copying errors during viral RNA replication.” Which still sounds like messing about with cell building blocks etc.

Just before I went to bed last night I made a coffee for my partner.
The rugby was just about to start and he wanted to stay up.
I waited for a moment while the teams ran out and sung their anthems.
Then the AB’s performed the HAKA.
Honestly, does anyone else find that…..EMBARRASSING?
Soooo cringe-making!

I guessed we’d lost when he came up later wearing pyjamas.

  But, I intensely dislike the propensity for people to drop a haka willy nilly — i do cringe at that. The all blacks haka should be the preserve of the all blacks only.

    I can remember some years ago seeing the NZ Army (brass) band performing in their formal dress uniform. They played brilliantly and the crowd was enjoying the performance.
    
    Then they all put their instruments down and did a haka. It just looked … weird. They got one or two ironic claps from the audience but that was all.

Is the latest foray into sexual violence prevention going to improve anything or is this just another Kiwibuild (perhaps Kiwirape)?

Spending $15M a year seems to be mainly focused on providing a wee trough – especially for Maori.

” Associate Minister for ACC Willie Jackson said Māori are disproportionately impacted by sexual violence.

“While many effects are common for all people, Māori experience sexual violence in culturally distinct ways. This requires solutions that are led by Māori, with Māori and for Māori.””

Ok, so another bunch of Maori service providers then. I wonder how much will end up going to the gangs since they are the worst offenders.

I can easily save you a few million: gangs are nests of sexual violence. If we stop treating the gangs like cultural organisations and ruthlessly stamp them out instead of handing out $3M for “drug programmes” and $??? for “domestic violence programmes”.

    Flip this on its head: Not raping people is a colonial construct.
    
    Rape is a power play. Of course it is a brutal violence against the woman, typically, who is being raped, but it is also a power play to humiliate the men who have their sisters, mothers, wives, whatever raped.
    
    Rape is part of the brutal warrior culture.
    
    It is no different in Africa where more than 50% of women end up raped in the less developed areas.

      If you can identify the worst traits that lead to violence/rape/whatever and some of those have cultural components, then messaging/”reprogramming” can be targeted at those traits.
      
      It is the same with any negative outcome in society. Find what’s broken, why it is broken then fix it. Just all saying that we want less rape is not going fix anything.

      Based on that, Maori are 11 times more likely to be high risk rapists than Europeans.
      
      If you discount cultural factors you’re not going to make any progress sorting this out.
      
      And, because you want to be “Maori-friendly” you sweep this under the carpet. Guess who suffers the most? Maori women – who are far more likely to be the victims of rape than non-Maori women.
      
      That goes for other offending too: it is Maori who are disproportionately victims of crime too – at the hands of Maori. Ignoring crime is not being Maori-friendly – it hurts Maori.
      
      Of course all rape and all crime should be addressed, but these massive skews in who is committing the crime need to be acknowledged to make headway.

        The government holds shares in some private companies where it would be unacceptable for that company to collapse due to market whims. See also Genesis, Meridian, and Mercury. The government, as shareholder for the taxpayers, appoints the majority of directors.
        Then there are SOEs – fully owned by the taxpayers but operating commercially. The government appoints the boards.
        Then there are the categories of Crown entities: Crown agents, autonomous Crown entities, and independent Crown entities. Again, the government appoints the boards, which have varying levels of statutory independence.
        Then there are the public services departments, which don’t have boards, but chief executives appointed by the public service commissioner.

  dc, all MPs fly within and without NZ at some stage so we presume they are 100% vaccinated or they would be banned. Also US politicians are exempt from being required to vaccinate so those who are not will have their travel to some countries curtailed. Well we know how sneaky elected officials can be and how their ‘proof of vaccine’ may be taken with a grain of salt.

  I would think airline bans would be related to government controls in the countries they fly too – if country A requires proof of vaccination before they will allow a passenger to land, there is no point in the airline offering seats to people who are not.
  
  Though I would also think the airlines would want to be making that clear, rather than imposing bans themselves.

OSH rules are usually about regulating the required actions/tasks of the employed.

The implied reasoning fails on many levels. Testing of all employees and passengers, jabbed or not, would be necessary before each flight since the vaxxed can carry the vrius and are probably more likely not to know they have it. And if this reasoning was really so important, they would long ago have required flu jabs etc.

A Maori dictionary might be handy, and don’t have high expectations.

The report comes from the Royal Society of NZ, as it is still officially named in legislation though it is promoting itself with a Maori name.

Be prepared for very low maths content and high political, Woke content.

  It is very readable once you figure out that :
  
  ākonga means students
  pāngarau means mathematics
  and tauanga means statistics.
  
  The section on Stats and using logic is really good… not dealing with high power analysis of data.. but explaining why it is important for ordinary folks to question why data are being collected, and whether numerical data are being analysed and interpreted appropriately.

    On a second look I find a heading “Ngā tūtohutanga”, which Google’s dictionary tells me means recommendations.
    
    The second of these says:
    
    Ensure every child is given a quality opportunity to learn mathematics and statistics for at least an hour every day, Years 0–10, and that they are given access to all areas of the curriculum.
    
    Statistics at age 5? Surely they can’t mean descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics? So they are really just talking about social studies.
    
    Why do Asian kids do so well in maths, and well beyond any small genetic advantage they likely have?

Expect an easy ride on Covid restrictions for students from here on in:

I heard from someone who travelled on the Auckland to Wellington Air NZ full flight yesterday. Lots of students on that flight. Students are part of one of the exemptions to the Auckland border restrictions that Ardern announced a week ago. Students have one a golden ticket in the exemptions lottery, shall we say…

Expect exemptions from restrictions for students to be in her plan to get re elected again. She knows what part of her voter base gets her over the line ie students. Will include things like easier pass rates etc for them, open book tests (in the name of covid disruptions). You even see free ncea credits being given out ‘because of covid disruptions’ for future voters of hers. These yr 12-13 kids now will be in uni by 2023.

From middle of next year I won’t be surprised to see the student allowance bribes to get rolled out as part two of shoring up the student vote (this includes their families who might be centre voters).
Ardern goes much easier on her voter base in a number of stealth ways. It does require compliance by government agencies supposed to be upholding standards eg university departments but they can be threatened and bought out in order to get them to tow the party line. Look what happened to Des Gorman when he spoke out on the inadequacies of the Labour covid response. His department head tried to silence him. Why?

Look also at the leniency accorded to gang infringements by her police puppet Coster, home isolation allowed for gang members etc etc. Meanwhile Ardern’s coming down heavy on people like butchers, greengrocers not in her ‘supermarket category’ of businesses allowed to open. These people tried to open in Auckland as they are about to lose their livelihoods. Her compliant msm also aiding and abetting this by, for eg, virtually no reporting by MSM on the gang infringements on Friday ,yet all over it with the Tamaki rally yesterday. I don’t normally like Tamaki, but good on him for taking a stand.

Make no mistake, every thing Ardern does is politically motivated to shore up her voter base and give them preferential treatment, or else it’s actions in response to Labour dropping in the polls.

  Also explains why Ardern didn’t mandate wearing of masks in schools -students and teachers are her core constituency, so better not make their life too difficult. This was despite one of the key ‘experts’, Michael Baker, calling for an across the board rule that masks be worn in schools.
  
  Baker is about the best of a bad bunch of Ardern scientific sycophants, in my view. At times he is prepared to state what he really thinks should happen, as opposed to just outright towing the party line and never criticising Ardern and Bloomfield. Maybe he doesn’t have as much government consultancy work, or maybe he’s just principled in what he believes should happen?

Just watched the 1pm Covid briefing. It’s like the beginning of the final big vaccination push. Jacinda – “if we’d had 90% of the country vaccinated then we wouldn’t be here today”. And she goes on about “the virus finding unvaccinated people”. I call BS on that. It’s a fact that the vaccine doesn’t stop people getting Covid or passing it on, ie, it wouldn’t stop case numbers rising. The best you can say is that the vaccine will ameliorate symptoms.

If I were more cynical, I would say that this whole thing has been created to push vaccination numbers.

  You make it sound like the vaccine does not work. It significantly reduces transmission but the effectiveness declines over time.
  
  But as far as Jacinda is concerned your point is well made. All of her public statements suggest that she thinks the COVID vaccine works like the MMR vaccine. Which if correct is kind of incredible. Even more incredible is that no journalists press her on this.

  The vaccine A) reduces the chance of catching covid (maybe), B) reduces its severity so probably somewhat reduces shedding/communicability, but C) reduces symptoms. The first two will reduce the chance of spreading it, but the third could increasing the chance of infecting others by increasing the chance that the carriers go about their daily lives. I wonder how these these factors add up in the end.

      Without correct for age (especially) it’s impossible to know what this means. The elderly and vulnerable, who have one or more orders of magnitude more risk from covid (this is true even comparing middle-aged people with teenagers etc.), are much more likely to be vaccinated. So it can be true that the vaccine reduces their risk even while still observing a greater number of cases/deaths among them compared to the unvaxxed (read, the young).
      
      I’m not saying there couldn’t be something else going on, like antibody dependent enhancement or whatever. Just that we can’t tell.

Just as a personal vignette re Covid – for the past 5 months I have been living on friends’ farm in South Carolina, looking after their horses (I am a horsey person) while they have been away, and apart from supermarket runs to the nearest town 30 miles away, I was happy where I was in a little slice of Paradise.

I had prevaricated getting Covid vaxxed for various reasons, but am not an ‘anti-vaxxer’ as I had many vaxes as a kid in the ’50’s, and also vaxxes which were compulsory in order to get legal residency in some of the countries I was posted to in my work ( I still have the bruises on my right arm from decades ago when an Emirati ‘nurse’ injected me with what to my eye was a horse syringe).

So injections were routine, and it was not the injections per se.

My South Carolina friends had been vaxxed, and had suffered no ill effects [so far, hah!] other than sore arms. They said I should get vaxxed, but that it’s my choice.

My California extended family have all been vaxxed, and said I was crazy not to get vaxxed. But I thought, as a Texan, who are CA folk to talk about being crazy.

My current home state is South Dakota, which is completely free with no restrictions. Being vaxxed is not an issue. So I never bothered.

But my horsey tasks ended a few days ago, and I am now on the 2,000 mile ride back to Rapid City SD thru some states with a Covid profile. What to do?

Yesterday on my way back to SD I stopped at my usual South Carolina small town supermarket and tossed a coin. It came up tails. So I walked in to the pharmacy there and said “Can I have a Covid shot?” [gulp].

“Sure” said the pharmacist girl. I filled out the waiver form pledging my first-born if I admitted to getting a fever, and had the jab in my left arm. I also bought a 6 pack of Lagunitas IPA beer for that night, in case I got a reaction.

Well, the first nite was in a Tennessee motel and my arm was fine, so I drank 3 bottles of IPA (only small bottles, honest) in celebration.

The next nite – tonite – I’m in a motel in Kentucky, and my left arm is aching. So I consulted Dr Lagunitas. Did the trick.

Tomorrow I am on my way further West, so if there is radio silence – then the vax has got me.

    She’s right. Look at the map of the North Island, and you can see it’s reasonably easy to isolate Auckland because the northern and southern boundaries are in the narrowest part of the island, the Auckland isthmus.
    
    Waikato, on the other hand goes from the western coast (Raglan, Kawhia etc) to the foot of the Kaimai Ranges, and there are hundreds of country roads that would be impossible to police. So the PM is going to rely on trust and compliance; good luck with that!

It looks like the wheels are coming off the wagon. I’ve been following the comments on FB if various news outlets. The comments are almost universally angry at the government and more and more comments are being switched off.

The PMs favorite trick of lockdowns aren’t getting the love they once did – now it’s seen as a naked power grab. The mood has changed and there is no going back so don’t be surprised that we see an erratic response from the government as it tries to respond to a non-pacified public.

As master Yoda said fear leads to anger and anger leads to hate. Well, we have a government that has lead by fear and now that’s running out so the response from the public is now anger – watch out when it’s hate.

Where I am, there is a high rate of vaccination for, I think, two reasons. The first is a fairly homogenous population with a sense of conformity arising from many years under a dictatorship. The second is a high death rate which has touched most of the population.
New Zealand has neither. You will not reach 90% without a lot more deaths, particularly in the most vulnerable communities which, ironically, are the least vaccinated.
Brace yourselves for months more of lockdowns and abrogation of freedoms. The rest of the world is over it. We are getting back to normal. New Zealand has only started to close down.

    Not just Maori. The Pacific community is also very vaccine hesitant, and the correlation between obesity and “social deprivation” in the general population is another indicator. Age is irrelevant. If you are 65 and obese with a variety of other illnesses, then you are more likely to die than a healthy 65 year old, regardless of ethnicity.

Ardern has lost the country – especially the south island.
Nationwide L4 lockdown for one case – yet she says that moving down alert levels is not political when daily cases are not flattening out?
People are no seeing through her lies.
And now she decided to double down and blame us for not vaccinating quick enough. Using threats of more lockdowns to “encourage” higher vaccination.
I don’t think resorting to threats is a viable tactic when people don’t believe you any more.

And while we are at it – when is someone going to grow a set of balls and tell a certain sector of the community that they are the real problem here. Their complete lack of basic health, their obesity, their filthy homes, their crap diets – and their desire to visit hospitals instead of going to a GP.
THEY are the problem here.
Lock THEM down.

  Agree completely. We have race based identity policies in every other field so it makes sense to enact lockdowns on similar grounds.

This gang killing is really bad…

Simple traffic incident turns into a murder…. gangs rule the country now.

Last night, headhunters motorcyclist overtook me by driving on wrong side of road and could not get back on right side of road because there was a median barrier. I wouldn’t report them, who knows what they’d do to for revenge?

Today, I saw quite a few gang members on motorbikes, more gang members than cops.

I see there are now call for cash incentives to get the lazy and feckless vaccinated.
Once again, those that can’t be bothered getting off the couch get financial rewards, while those of us that have done our part get nothing but a bill as taxpayers.
I guess they’ll now complain whatever is offered is not enough.
