  Dr. Harvey Risch, an epidemiology professor at the Yale School of Public Health and Yale School of Medicine’s Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, argued that by and large, what has characterized the entire virus pandemic has been a “degree of fear and people’s response to the fear.”
  
  “Overall, I’d say that we’ve had a pandemic of fear. And fear has affected almost everybody, whereas the infection has affected relatively few,” said Risch.
  
  “By and large, it’s been a very selected pandemic, and predictable. It was very distinguished between young versus old, healthy versus chronic disease people. So we quickly learned who was at risk for the pandemic and who wasn’t.
  
  “However, the fear was manufactured for everybody. And that’s what’s characterized the whole pandemic is that degree of fear and people’s response to the fear.”
  
  Dr. Risch has authored more than 300 original peer-reviewed publications and was formerly a member of the board of editors for the American Journal of Epidemiology.

This is a good article. It highlights what the unvaccinated are going through with the vaccine pass system.

The vaccine passes are one dimension of the social divide. And probably the most visible. I commented to my partner last night that the three activities we are doing this weekend are not available to the unvaccinated. I’m not comfortable about that.

The other dimension of social division is a racial division. The government is the architect

One of the most important functions of any Government is to unite the country and promote a sense of belonging. The Taiwanese Government does that. The Australian Government does that, despite the parochial attitudes of some of the State Governments. (Just compare the mood on Australia Day compared to Waitangi Day. There is no comparison.)

This Government must go. The damage will otherwise be permanent. And I have not even touched on the other disasters. The housing catastrophe the welfare mess, the gang menace.

They are a blueprint of failure.

  It will sit on 2 things:
  
  1). The ‘son of megatron’ variant continuing to be a fizzer and Kungflu being done by mid-2022.
  2). The general state of the economy.
  
  If these turn then this government is toast. The right have finally got an alternative that can attract a broad coalition of support and a good chunk of NZ are actively looking for an alternative.

    The centre-right have had an alternative for several years now, his name is David Seymour and he’s continually punched above his weight.
    
    Luxon looks like a shiny-suited corporate shill with little understanding of how politics works. I may be proven wrong and I’ll give hm the opportunity to win my vote, but “on the right” he most certainly is not.

Can answer questions without procrastinating and going off the subject and seems to be an all round decent human being. More than I can say for Ardern and her hapless mob.       Just be pragmatic in that Luxon dosen’t need your vote and isnt there for your vote. He needs to attract the soppy 40 or 50% in the center that dont really think too much about politics and just want life to be easy.
      Its MMP and for the “right” to win its now very obvious that a two tiered attack is required. A centrist party and one with a spine!
      You decide which is which.
      
      I voted for Key the first time but went ACT when it was apparent that Key was just Helen in drag.
      
      The term from ’23 onward NEW ZEALAND can not afford to allow the Nats to continue the policies of ruin that Labour have brought in.

      Describing people with derogatory names does not give me with any confidence that you might have enough of an open mind to make fair judgement of their character or abilities.
      A long time ago I did a business management course at Polytech and one statement has stayed with me ever since: the head of a business is not there to know how to make apple boxes, or even how to fill them. What he has to do is appoint someone to manage the box makers department so that they can do their job efficiently.
      Government may be bigger, but the theory is the same. Whoever is the manager, it is his/her job to facilitate the efficient working of the government and its agencies.
      We have seen the first steps of the Luxon management strategy with the appointment of his shadow cabinet.
      I will watch how Simon Bridges fares. I imagine that he will find his portfolio challenging, and if he does’t measure up, well, there is a shadow right behind him, and Luxon may well have this in mind.

      Luxon has said many clear statements since his appointment, but his comments about “uniting all of NZ regardless of ethnicity” (I interpret as closing the ever widening bicultural rift) certainly resonated with me. Championing our shared national identity as Kiwis, is vital if we are to tackle the issues that affect (or concern) many citizens.
      If Luxon doesn’t deliver on this issue, Seymour may well pick up those disillusioned National votes again.

  Went to a rural airfield yesterday, the wind gently blowing. Out to a caravan on the airfield serving as a “”command post”” for the local gliding club(I am not a member, just a visitor).
  
  On arrival I was greeted with at least 2 people saying, “have you got your pass”” followed by…. you have to show it to a person in the caravan….
  
  So logic not top of their thought processes. ie open air, slight breeze, infection possibility zero etc.
  
  To be kind they were not thinking. Just bleating sheeple. Following ” the rules “.

    I understand that people who sit and fly in small planes and gliders have to be vaccinated – due to the confinement issues.
    Aero Clubs have a considerable network of planes and members flying in and out from all over the place. It’s not just going to be locals turning up.
    As with many organisations these days, the requirement has been ordered from above and all Clubs will have to comply wherever they are.
    I guess the people in the caravan won’t know if you are a pilot or a customer coming for a flying lesson or a casual visitor – vaccinated or not.

    A friend showed me a photo of two endurance horse riders – one was wearing a mask. It’s hard to imagine a healthier place to be than riding a horse on open country in the fresh air –
    But apparently it was required because the rider wasn’t vaxxed.
    Now, EndNZ has mandated: no passport, no entry.

  It is clear to me that the restrictions are primarily designed to punish the unvaccinated for our decision to exercise what should be an inalienable right to bodily autonomy. Of course these restrictions are dressed up as ‘protecting the vaccinated’ but that’s a blatant lie.

    It’s coercion pure and simple. What is really concerning is how many people except a vaccine but then need protection from people who aren’t vaccinated and nobody seems to ask the obvious question. In Ardern’s Land of the wrong white crowd logic has literally been thrown overboard.

    KK: Agree totally. My youngest went with mates to a bar yesterday. She hasn’t downloaded the passport, but has a letter from the MoH proving she’s vaccinated. The bar wouldn’t let her in, even though she could prove a he’s been double vaccinated. They all left without a $ spent. It was in fact a good lesson for them all. They now realise it’s not about being vaxxed… but control.

      Elderly friend, double vaxxed, but unable to load vax pass onto her phone had ventured down to the wharf on Monday and decided to buy a couple of fillets of tarakihi from the local fishmonger.
      She ventured inside and when the shop assistant asked to see her vax pass, she showed her little vax card with the dates of her 2 shots…
      “I can’t serve you with that”, said the assistant.
      ‘OK”, replied my friend and started to walk out…
      “but, if you give us your address, we can deliver them to you”,
      “Thanks”, said friend, “but that’s too much bother”.
      “Well”, said assistant ” if you stand at the door , we can bring you the fillets and you can pay there.”
      “Wonderful” said friend, as she got her EFTPOS card out.
      Assistant brings out wrapped-up fillets and EFTPOS machine and hands them over to friend.
      Friend swipes card through EFTPOS machine and it won’t read her card.
      Assistant says “come inside and see if the card works there”
      Friend goes inside and swipes card – all good.
      Fish purchased, Friend happy.
      
      (Following day, her grandchild successfully placed vax passport on her phone).

        Partner and I walked into a cafe yesterday to order lunches. The young Maori girl at the door asked to see our vacc passes which partner showed on her smart phone and walked in. Same security just looked at me as I strolled in after partner without asking to see mine. As it happens I’m double vaxxed and boostered but had left my phone in the car, go figure……..

    Usually the unvaxxed get a free ride on the coattails of us vaxxed but not this time. Undoubtedly the restrictions, in part, are designed to drive up the vax rate. In Auckland, where they have had the “ clear and present” danger bounce, rates are over 95%. Overall we could end up over 97%. Even Hosking was impressed. While we won’t reach herd immunity (unvaxxed children) we will reach a point where, once it gets loose, it will splutter along and peater out in most cases rather than catch fire. Of course in places like Aranui, where the cleaver people live, things might be different. Lives will be saved. The US have had 0.25% of there population die. (excess deaths) we, on the other hand, have escaped with few deaths.

  I am not at all suggesting what your principles should be. That is a personal matter for you.
  
  But such things will only be challenged if principled people make a stand.
  
  It heartens me that there are many principled people even if they are in a minority.
  
  One person I know who is a heavy Christian walked away from his church of 20 years because they demanded a passport, even though he is fully vaxxed and has downloaded the passport. He is still friendly with the pastor there and engages with him that it is wrong to turn people away – regardless of what the government says.
  
  It is not easy being principled and it is impractical to be fully principled.
  
  I grew up in apartheid South Africa. Many whites were uncomfortable with apartheid, but very few were sufficiently uncomfortable to not participate.

    Have heard multiple stories of people who have downloaded the scanner on to their phones.
    They are so slow that in crowd situations it is easier just to visually verify the vaccination pass.

  It’s especially tough for kids. 12 year olds are at next to no risk from covid and of next to no risk to anyone us.
  
  Parents are oftentimes reluctant to vaxx their kids given that risk.
  
  Yet those kids now can’t swim at the pool, go to the library, take part in sports, join clubs, go to birthday parties, be with their mates.
  
  Try being a parent in that scenario. My oldest is 10 but I fear it will be down to 5 soon.

      Work in an office. Dedicated worker. Does not like working at home.
      
      Travel.
      
      Dining out.
      
      Her tennis club.

  (Sorry Benedict, that is sarcasm and you probably don’t deserve it – you provide thoughtful and reasoned pieces here at Kiwiblog and I really appreciate your contributions).
  
  But, people are losing their jobs or being forced to work from home because they are not allowed in the office. And for what? A virus that poses very, very little danger to healthy people as you yourself have posted about…
  
  Contractors, suppliers and visitors to government agencies – mandatory vaccination to come on premises (consultations on this policy or directives from heads of agency are happening in this space right now).
  
  People needlessly restricted from many places like cafes, libraries, gyms, swimming pools etc that help people relax and preserve their mental and physical health.
  
  Jacinda said it wouldn’t be made mandatory – but her government is using proxies in the Corporate and Government sectors to pressure and COERCE people to be vaccinated. Over riding a persons rights to decide on medical treatment and their rights to freedom of movement and freedom of association.
  
  If Jacinda had the courage of her convictions she would legislate mandatory vaccination – Labour have the majority and she can do this in a couple of days under urgency if she wanted to. But that would sully the ‘Be Kind’ meme no doubt….

  Wholeheartedly agree, and pleased to see the journalistic angle was not to demonise these courageous principled people. This outrageous public discrimination is the responsibility of the Ardern gov, but should be a shared shame by everyone that vilifies the unvaccinated (especially children). I expect a foregone conclusion for Pfizer to receive gov approval to vaccinate 5-11 y/o next, and that’s where such divisive discrimination really fractures society, when innocent children are excluded from society and are bullied by other children.
  Of the entire Stuff article I’m unsure about Baker’s comments though, as I believe he is blatantly misinforming the public by stating that “covid is now the most common cause of death in Europe” as when compared to official stats demonstrating that ischaemic heart disease remains (significantly) the greatest cause of death.

  Then further down the article Peter Gluckman spouts the other lie repeated ad nauseum. That it is a “pandemic of the unvaccinated”. How are so called “experts” permitted to lie openly like this?   This morning Archbishop Paul Martin delivered a sermon at the 8am mass at St Mary’s Pro Cathedral in Christchurch on the topic of tolerance and hypocrisy. This was at a church where there were guards stationed outside checking that only those with vaccination passports could enter and preventing the unvaccinated ‘outcasts’ from participating in the mass. Yes, Archbishop, tolerance and hypocrisy. Jesus wept. The church as an agent of the state.

  The damage being done with the vaccine pass legislation is immense and at this stage unmeasurable. It will eventually show up in the mental health statistics – the mental health that this government campaigned on.
  
  The importance of social contact especially for the aged is of the utmost importance in preventing mental decline. I am in occasional correspondence with an elderly widower who does not want to be vaccinated. He is in good health and up until now has had good social contact. He has lost that because the Halls and Libraries, and the coffee shops where he met up with friends and groups have all been closed to him. His letters show a marked change in his mood. It’s quite heartbreaking.
  
  There are enough published papers on the ineffectiveness of masks, lockdowns, and vaccine passes that this government should be aware of, and by continuing down the path that Jacinda is going demonstrates that this is not about health but about societal control and punishment of those who have not followed with out care for their wellbeing.

    Yup, that is a lie, but then Baker has history of applying the same logic to flu deaths so at least he’s somewhat consistent.
    
    Back in 2019 Baker was pushing hard for flu vaccinations saying that flu deaths were under counted by a factor of 20. ie. There are 10,000 flu deaths a year in NZ – not 500.
    
    If you used a PCR test for flu, then counted every death with a positive test as a “flu death” then he is quite likely right.
    
    But is it fair to count people as CV19 deaths when the criteria are so out of whack?
    
    In USA, the CDC stats show that only 5% of CV19 deaths have no other cause listed on the death certificates. Most have 4 other comorbidities.

So while the “slowed Maori vaccination” may come back to bite Jacinda in the bum (don’t think too much about it) and cost us tax payer funding, and that contributed by some Maori too, her arse-covering yesterday may ameliorate that backlash –
“This Waitangi Tribunal finds you were slow in Maori vaccination”
“Yes, I know – but I have already admitted that. What else?”

So Northland District Police have successfully demonstrated the chaos their (Iwi?) checkpoints will create with a dry run operation dishing out stickers to “locals”. Two km queues in and around rural Waipu ain’t a bad effort on a Saturday.

    The stickers put on cars yesterday were for Northland people – so that people from lower Northland can pass through the checkpoint more quickly as their cars can be identified as being from Northland. They’re being told if they don’t have a sticker on their car from Wednesday they will need proof of address on them to show they are not from Auckland.
    
    Also of interest, the article in the Herald contradicts the one linked to by 70andstilllearning – the Herald says the stickers were supposed to be handed out yesterday and today, but all 2500 stickers were issued yesterday and today’s handout in Waipu has been cancelled. The much briefer article in Radio NZ says more stickers will be available today.

  Are they just one sticker or do they change them? It seems it would be easy to fake the stickers or peel them off and give or sell them.
  
  I doubt they’d be able to organise a complicated system (eg. different coloured stickers) so I expect it really is just theatre – something that can be faked or bypassed with almost zero effort.

      I doubt it.
      There is a general principal of statutory interpretation that the law is read so as not to trample on the people’s toes. Any doubt is theirs not the States.
      
      Where they already have explicit rights such as the BOR those take superiority. International treaties may over ride domestic law changes. There is a natural hierarchy of the application of law without which it’s essentially anarchy. Changes may be possible but they need agreement and a very clear statement of intent.
      
      Law drafters are very conscious of these matters and would generally remind a Minster when they approached the boundaries.

  Frankly I do not find this at all surprising. The “vaccine” is a one trick pony – only operating on the spike protein and are thus easier to evade. “Real” vaccines, and natural immunity, attack on many fronts (often 20 or more that are known + probably many more that are unknown).       That is almost a universal opinion and is backed by stats.
      
      What is more contentious is whether the vaccine helps at all against Omicron. Hospitalisation rations in South Africa suggest that the vaccine does not work or is, at best, far less effective on Omicron than it was on Delta and previous.
      
      Even Pfizer are saying that two jabs are ineffective against Omicron and adding a booster still won’t get you there.

  I was at the New Brighton hot pools on Friday. There were about 30 Maori kids from somewhere having a session at the pools. They were all pretty well behaved and had a good time. Aged betwen about 9 and 14.
  
  What was alarming is how many of them were very over weight. The organisers had set up a table for afternoon tea. I walked past as I was heading back to the changing room. Table was packed with processed food, potato crisps, and sugary drinks.

      Also, this may be an unpopular utterance, but Martyn correctly points out that SIS and the Plod have form for this with surveilling the left e.g. infiltrating the anti-1080 and other green movements. IIRC Plod were additionally despicable re: stopping people coming/going from an assisted dying meeting a few years ago. They gave its vaccines early, and for free, with boosters starting next week (Mr Pharma a bit older than me). They gave kids vaccines early. And of all the people I know that got the virus only two died [both elderly parents of colleagues]. Meanwhile NZ made me effectively stateless for EFF YOU NZ government – we're at a point in our lives where we could have come back and seriously contributed in senior positions once Mr Pharma finishes his current position in 2024. Not effing happening now. And we'll endow scholarships and professorships in Canada and/or UK.

As a vaccinated but non participating person in society in regards to the certificate, I find it absolutely bizarre that anyone who has been exposed self isolates. Only double jabbed can enter a gym. If one person has it then everyone there has to isolate. You have to be jabbed to work in a bar, one person has it the whole business self isolates. What’s the frigging point. We could have 500, 000 double jabbed having to self isolate next year dispite having no symptoms.

And does this new normal include wearing masks permanently? Keep your mask on but if you have a beer in your hand it’s safe to take it off..

Shocking. Leaked govt agreements with Pfizer from around the world show that Pfizer is bullying and blackmailing governments to the extent that if Pfizer is ever sued, it is the governments of those countries who must defend Pfizer in court using government assets as collateral.

Basically, Pfizer can infringe on any company’s intellectual property with impunity. If they are ever sued, it is governments that must defend them in court and pay any damages using government assets as collateral –

Number one, Pfizer has the right to silence governments. It has forced countries to not talk about the deals they strike for shots. Number two, Pfizer controls the donations of its shots, not the country that buys them. Pfizer will decide where the shots go. Number three, Pfizer has secured an intellectual property waiver for itself. And this clause is particularly disturbing. If Pfizer is accused of intellectual property theft, governments will pay not the company. Number four, if there are disputes, private arbitrators and not public courts will decide on them. Number five, Pfizer can go after state assets to secure its compensation. And number six, Pfizer calls the shots on all key decisions. It decides delivery timelines and more. […]

  Love to look at those contracts. The only party who has any rights is Pfizer. They may fail under common law as they are so shockingly one sided that consent cannot be inferred even from them being signed. The Court jurisdiction is elsewhere too.

  This is something that I speculated about approx a month ago, so it is interesting to see some evidence emerging. It will be interesting to see how further studies go.
  
  Assuming it is true, what this really means is that – for most- getting a natural infection is a very good deal – far better than being vaccinated.
  
  Consider someone like me – reasonable health aged 59. I’d rather get CV19 now and get a whole lot of natural immunity that will serve me better for my 60s, 70s and onwards. It’s an investment in future health – like the immunity the Russian flu of 1889/90 seems to gave given to the older people in the Spanish Flu of 1918/19.
  
  Of course it is entirely a different cost-benefit outcome if you’re into your 70s or have compromised health. Then it makes far more sense to be thinking shorter term and thinking about your need for more immediate protection. The vaccine makes much more sense. I’d be vaccinated if I was in such a group.
  
  It is looking more and more like young, healthy people have been sold down the river by all the coercive methods used to get them vaccinated when they are not getting a real benefit – and maybe are even getting a disadvantage in the long term.

      I have been saying for months that I would rather get the china ‘flu & gain immunity that way rather than being subject to gene therapy, even tho’ I am 79, but in pretty good health & fir for my age.
      I’m noticing with some alarm the almost daily revelations about that adverse reactions to the ‘jab’and am therefore very comfortable with my choice, even though I am “Unclean” – the modern version of “yellow armband Juden”.
      My so-in-law who is a pharmasist & has tried to get me to take the ‘jab’ which he administers, because – ” you might catch Covid & die – & think how that will affect the grandchildren”.
      I say, we all die sometime, I have a strong Catholic faith, and therefore have no fear of death – I have had a good life – so bring it on; if it is my time to die,( according to the Will of God) then so be it.

        Given that death comes to all of us, Don, I, too, have no fear of death. Indeed, whether we have a faith, or, as in my case, no faith whatsoever, it is irrational to fear death. So, your “strong Catholic faith” most definitely does not (as you smugly imply, whether you realise it, or not) accord you, and those like you, some sort of superior position in that regard.
        
        When you say you don’t fear death, because of your “strong Catholic faith”, and that if your death (of COVID-19, or by any other cause) is the will of god “then so be it”, what you’re really saying, is that you believe there is life after death, which you will enjoy. That, of course, is patent nonsense.
        
        When you’re dead, you’re dead, which is why all of us (including you) hope to live as long as possible; to live out our natural lives, because we all know that this is it, that this life is all we have, and are going to have. To think, or believe, otherwise, is also irrational.

I had a revealing chat this morning with a friendly local bank manager. He says there are strong indications that the government will move to eliminate cash. I have read some US commentators saying that it is immanent there. I know our Reserve Bank man, Adrian Orr, has said it will not happen in NZ, and it’s easy to pass this off as conspiracy theory (especially in the American context), but when a sober NZ banker says the same thing, that is scary. And we know how much we can trust definitive statements from on high.
But if this should come to pass, the implications are very scary, and I am sure that many with better understandings of these things can point out the salient issues. The big one is that the government will have total control over our finances. The little ones are how will the small things of society survive, like the kids pocket money, my weekly table tennis game which asks for a $5 entrance (in cash), the sports club sausage sizzle outside Bunnings, etc. Perhaps it’s time to take out shares in an Eftpos company.

53 new cases in Auckland yesterday, most recover within a week or 2 at the most, so fewer than 1000 people out of 1.5m – that makes around 0.07% of Auckland might have covid, many will be at home while sick so the vast majority of people you might pass in the street won’t have covid. (On Friday it was reported the MoH doesn’t have the admin staff/time to remove people who have recovered from the list of active cases, so I’ve worked out a rough number for myself.)

92% of Aucklanders are fully vaccinated, and 95% have had one dose.

While anybody can get any infectious illness from any person, anywhere, at any time, the chance of her getting covid in the 2 days she is in Auckland is so small, that the fear she (and many others) feel is out of all proportion to the risk.
