      The study says nothing of the sort:
      “To assess the impact of Omicron on reinfection rates we relied on genotype data, since SGTF is associated with a higher observed rate of reinfection, likely due to reinfections typically having higher Ct values than primary infections and therefore being subject to a higher rate of random PCR target failure. Controlling for vaccine status, age, sex, ethnicity, asymptomatic status, region and specimen date and using conditional Poisson regression to predict reinfection status, Omicron was associated with a 5.41 (95% CI: 4.87-6.00) fold higher risk of reinfection compared with Delta. This suggests relatively low remaining levels of immunity from prior infection.”
      This is gobbledegook for “we kept our thumb firmly on the scale.”

  I think a lot of NZers who are in NZ feel the same way. Continuing mask mandates, restricting movement and vilification of citizens exercising their right to refuse a “vaccine” with effectiveness that is hit and miss at best. And now people who did obediently take a double dose of the “vaccine” will be treated as unvaccinated until they have a booster jab. The first political polls of 2022 will be interesting to see and will probably show more of a slide of support away from Labour and back to National and ACT.

  Yes the low intelligence thinking on climate change gives me a headache. A few months back I was talking to someone who said the dairy herd should be slashed because of climate change. I explained that the market share that New Zealand gave up would be instantly replaced by other dairy producers, such as Brazil.
  
  She said to me “No they would not do that”. ??And she was an advisor to the New Zealand government.
  
  There are some parts of New Zealand with intensive dairy farms that are experiencing water quality problems. But that is a separate issue.

Might be Christmas but Santa has brought no common sense to this Govt

Know of several older people who have serious health conditions and a case of any form of covid would be a debatable outcome

Due to these existing conditions they had their original double jab well over 6 months ago

But they are confused. They have been told boosters are now available but none of the health providers know what is going on and MoH info is very confusing. Many are being told they need to book on MoH website although for a normal jab you can just walk into a vaccination centre and some being told they need to wait until Jan 5 and then you can walk in

MoH seems to think viruses wait for them to get their shit together. When Omnicron gets into the community the real failure of this Govt will be shown up as it will spread very quick and most of the at risk population won’t have been able to access boosters in time

        Benedict, I’d look up VAIDS, Vaccine Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is a theory and far from proved to be in action, but it is a possibility that does need careful investigation. So it is not some fantasy or conspiracy theory, at this stage a low probability, but not as low as I would once have thought.
        
        Some years back a vaccine against a BCV infection in domestic poultry was tested, and although initially apparently successful, when a mutated variant appeared all the test animal died from it as they were unable to form a proper immune response to it because the vaccine had sort of “locked in” their immune system to a specific variant.
        
        Note the Danish paper I cited earlier, vaccinated people seem, after 3 months, to become significantly more susceptible to an Omicron Covid infection than the unVaxxed. Not yet confirmed but could be a pointer to some for of vaccination damage to an immune system, or maybe just a side effect of having a lot of S protein hanging around.

        The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna mRNA vaccines use a different approach. Instead of the vaccine containing the protein itself, it contains templated-instructions about how to make the protein, so that the cells in our bodies can manufacture it. How…? By packaging the mRNA in a capsule = a lipid nanoparticle, a delivery vehicle to allow the mRNA to safely enter the cells in the body. Once introduced via the lipid nanoparticle vehicle, the mRNA is treated the same as any other – it is used by the cells as a template to build the protein and is then broken down. After the spike protein is manufactured by the vaccinated cell, it causes an immune response in the same way as traditional vaccines.
        
        So: as mRNAs are broken down by the cell after they have been used, the RNA from the vaccine does not persist in cells. The smart people (TM) say we should think of the mRNA vaccine has being a one-time set of instructions that the body then ‘forgets’, and this is very different to how gene therapies work.         …But there is a possibility of RNA actually entering DNA via reverse transcription. This possibility has been dismissed by the scientists given the media podium, and it’s certainly hard to find the possibility discussed. But it has been discussed “out there”.
        
        For example, some types of RNA viruses, such as HIV, contain genes that make a protein called “reverse transcriptase”. A retrovirus is a type of virus that inserts a copy of its RNA genome into the DNA of a host cell it invades, therefore altering the genome of that cell. Taking the example of HIV, reverse transcriptase can convert the HIV RNA into DNA, so the HIV genes can enter the human genome.
        
        The usual response to this is “But SARS-CoV-2 is not a retrovirus and the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines don’t make reverse transcriptase. They only contain one gene: the gene for the SARS-CoV-2 viral spike protein.!”
        
        Which is true as far as it goes. Right now. Under evolutionary pressure, the Chinese 2019 coronavirus has clearly evolved = see all the variants so far; in my view we can’t dismiss the possibility that it will evolve in some patients, including HIV sufferers for example, to be able to manufacture reverse transcriptase and pass that on when it infects other people. Sure, the possibility is very small as two separate but quite substantial evolutionary changes need to happen for that to take place; but who would have thought that a yearly evolutionary change in the standard flu coronavirus* would lead it to become a pandemic?
        
        (*Unless, and I believe this, gain a function research was deliberately carried out in the Wuhan military Institute for biological research and the viruses either deliberately or accidentally leaked. Bear in mind that, that although people dismiss this as a conspiracy theory, all conspiracies down the ages have started off in theory before they were put into practice… but I digress…)
        
        If you read widely, you may come across this interesting passage:
        
        “So, the only way the COVID-19 vaccine mRNA might enter your DNA is if you were unlucky enough to be infected at precisely the same time with HIV, or another kind of retrovirus, and this virus was active for the few short hours the vaccine mRNA was present in your cells. The chances of this happening are vanishingly small.”
        
        Err, yes. Because we all know that vanishingly small chances of something happening basically means nothing happens. OK. Yeah, right. The Titanic hitting an iceberg and sinking was a vanishingly small risk, and so the Titanic never sank. A weird Serbian activist assassinating an Austrian Duke leading to a global war was a vanishingly small risk, and so World War I never took place. Oh wait…

Merry Christmas to all. The following was penned, I believe by an Australian, and seems to sum up the spirit of the occasion perfectly:

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral, celebration of the summer solstice holiday, practices within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all.
And,
A fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2022, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make Australia great, (not implying that Australia is necessarily greater than any other country or is the only “AUSTRALIA” in the western hemisphere),

  “Kindness” will give way to even more segregation and state-induced and encouraged violence against the disobedient, the more so the more people give in and thus the fewer hold outs. However, I truly believe that if everyone stands firm against the impending (full) tyranny, they will fail to impose it on us. You can deduce from their ongoing desparation, not just here but around the world, that the numbers of unvaxxed are far, far higher than they will admit (because admitting so will undermine their campaign).

Perhaps it’s the Christmas rich food …

I thought I was hallucinating when watching the Youtube video of Peruvian opera singer Juan Diego Flórez performing “Cucurrucucú Paloma” (link below).

The musician sitting behind him and at right angles to him was .. was … it couldn’t be … New Zealand politician Chris Finlayson. The glasses, the hair colour, face, the knowing grin.

The trance continued. Suddenly I detected the Finlayson-musician behind Diego Flórez murmuring to himself, “I bet I could get a sweetheart settlement for the indigenous Quechua from that mob in Lima.”

Interesting paper out of Denmark. After three months both the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines give negative protection against catching Covid, significantly worse than being unvaccinated.

This is against the Omicron variant specifically. Cause not speculated upon, but possibly VAIDS, vaccine acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Certainly worth further investigation, and maybe we are damn lucky that Omicron is for most barely distinguishable from a typical BCV “cold”.

  The cause is speculated upon, ie behavioural differences and population proportions. Mandates necessarily mean more intermingling among the vaccinated and rapid waning of VE against Omicron it would be odd if this trend did not show up.
  The paper notably does not suggest VAIDS or similar. That was in the tweets which were notable for their antivaxxer flavour.
  One tweet states that a study ( unspecified) showed COVID antibody levels near zero after some months. Since protection wanes and in the absence of exposure, this is as expected, and obviously not less than the level that would be found in an unvaccinated, uninfected individual. More informative would be a measure to compare the immune response of each group to an exposure event.
  From hospitalisation rates I know who my money is on. But Omicron is certainly changing the picture.

The “Maori Battalion” is Maori health providers.

The subeditors at the Herald will get a sharp note from above for putting this behind the paywall.
