I see Ghislaine Maxwell has been convicted & faces 65 years in gaol. A few thoughts:
* Clearly guilty of creepy behaviour
* Some 16 year old girls know exactly what they were doing
* Those former 16 year old girls have now strengthened their claim on Epstein’s estate
* Where were their parents in all of this?
* 65 years is just ridiculous
* Americans are always happy to bash foreigners with their legal system (which is why I am ambivalent about Kim Dot Com being sent to face American justice)

The saddest thing is that Ghislaine loved Epstein and once she got too old for his taste, could only show it by procuring young girls for him.

In NZ, Ghislaine would be surrounded by feminists proclaiming her to be a victim of toxic masculinity. So, there is that.

        No, just an expensive appeal process. The outcome will be judges doing cartwheels with the law, so that the “justice” sought by the media, the public mob, publicly elected District attorneys and other politicians is applied, while trashing the law and due process.
        
        This charade will play out so the woke mob can all feel happy about themselves. And in the process Maxwell becomes the true victim because the one arm of government that should remain beyond the public mob will bow to the sentiment of the mob.

        On the same day, we hear that all the files and related data in the Maxwell case are to be permanently sealed, and the two guards who “forgot” to check on Epstein will have all charges against them dropped.
        
        It must be good to have that level of influence so that as a child molestor you can get all the evidence against you suppressed, and officially suppressed what’s more. Makes one all the more certain that Epstein definitely did not kill himself.

  Prince Andrew will be shitting himself. One of the girls has taken a civil case against him. He tried to avoid service but a UK High Court Judge ruled service to one of his flunckies was service.
  Mumm wont be able to protect him from the Courts.

    Nope, all the records are sealed, Clinton is quite safe, although he was a guest on the “Lolita express” flights at least 26 times. Trump will probably be attacked because he once took a flight on a smaller aircraft with Epstein in the 1990’s from Florida to NY after Trumps aircraft needed servicing, and has no known visits to St James island or any of Epstein’s other residences. If Trump was connected in anyway to anything in the Maxwell trial it would have been deliberately leaked by now, so pretty clearly there’s nothing of substance.
    
    That’s what politicised justice does for you, ensures that the well connected guilty never get to face justice.

  I’m sure my very smart daughter “knew what was doing” well before 16. That is totally irrelevant. Young people are protected by laws such as the age of consent to protect them from themselves.
  
  65 years is certainly a very long time…but then I much prefer the Yank policy of imposing a cumulative sentence for each conviction over the “freebees” one gets here. You do know that if someone kidnapped a woman, gave her a serious hiding, and then raped her several times, his sentence here would be for the “totality of the offending” i.e far less that a sentence for each crime?
  
  I know of no evidence that Americans “like to bash foreigners”; just yesterday I was watching a doco on an American serial killer who is serving 197 years plus two life sentences for his crimes. Such sentences are not uncommon in the land of the (not so) free. You don’t have to be a foreigner to get one.

    What Maxwell did was pure evil and there is no excuse for it…ever…but one thing I have noticed is that in all the photos of her with Epstein she is the one who looks in love, he looks pretty indifferent. I think she was obsessed with him. He had some sort of hold over her.

      Agreed. Have you watched the Netflix series Serpent? Along similar lines, charismatic psychopath has others who have fallen under their spell do much of their dirty work for them.
      She needs to take responsibility for her actions, but what about the many hundreds of people, men/women/couples who enabled this by partaking in activities with these young ladies?
      I am not supportive of her going down if no one else does. Truth be told, she’ll ‘commit suicide’ well before she has the opportunity to sing like a canary.

  And interestingly a number of those charges would not stand in New Zealand or much of Europe where the age of consent is 16 or lower. Which is the reason why I find it bizarre that our media refers to Epstein as a pedophile when many of his victims were at the age of consent in New Zealand. My comments only address the age of the girls involved here, and not any maters of coercion or the involvement of money, or those who were only 14 0r 15 at the time.
  
  By the way, I don’t think we have the age of consent wrong in NZ, but I think that many of the States in the US do (17 and 18).

    Stories are told of Epstein and his friends trafficking 8-year-olds. The court case could be a cover-up for worse crimes. Most people aren’t too upset about 16-year-olds, but under 13 is different. I think, in due course, evidence will emerge of under 10-year-olds. There is underground evidence not presented by the prosecution who, incidentally, is James Comey’s daughter.

    It varies between states, from 16 to 18. Raised from 10 to 12 early in the twentieth century.
    Personally, I have no hesitation describing Epstein as a pedophile when he was a rich, powerful man in his fifties having sex with vulnerable teenagers.

      That is common usage but technically incorrect. I think ephebophilia is the correct technical term for Epstein’s behaviour, sexual interest in mid to late adolescents. Paedophilia is technically pre-pubertal sexual interest.
      
      Prince Andrew has a possible partial defence (legal defence) in that the girl he is accused of having sex with was at least 16 at the time and if the acts occurred on Little St James the age of consent in that territory is I think 16. Not going to work for any acts committed in the USA, but if he is formally charged I wouldn’t doubt that his lawyers would try it on.

    The one mis-step was trying to turn Concert Radio into a youth channel for Maori and Pacific Island New Zealanders. The intelligentsia arm of Labour, including Helen Clark, put the kibosh on that bridge too far.

New Years Honours.

Can you imagine getting a call from some bureaucrat in Wellington to say you have won a prestigious award about to be announced in the New Years Honours. Wow, you think. That’s pretty cool. You meekly ask, “what is this acknowledgement for?” “Oh, we are making up the quota. We are short of people in your disadvantaged minority, so we pulled your name out of a hat”.

Is it just me or does that seem to be the way the honour’s system works now?

  These awards are all politically correct these days – and so this year we get three new Dames and three new Knights.

  And, tonight, the TV News will bring us the usual banal interviews with the ‘humbled’ honourees in which we’ll be told ‘this honour is really for my sport/colleagues/ethnicity’ and that ‘everyone should keep calling me Shirley’…
  
  I mentioned to my partner that, one again, sniff, I have been overlooked for a gong (well-deserved, in my modest opinion) for services to being a white, law-abiding, cat-patting, taxpaying citizen…
  
  But then I thought that if Jass had wanted to honour such a worthy soul it’d be more likely that she’d elevate the Speaker of our Parliament to Lord Trev status…
  
  I think Jass wasted an opportunity this year, anyway. Why not make Awards to groups like, oh, the supermarket workers or the vaccinators or even ‘The team of 5 Million’?

I might have missed Kiwibloggers’ tributes to Desmond Tutu after the Nobel laureate’s death on Boxing Day.
He will surely be remembered as one of the great moral voices of the late 20th century. A man who saw the desperate need to end a system of government based on racial oppression, but also saw the need for reconciliation in the aftermath of that regime’s inevitable fall.

  It’s not merely that Tutu demonised Israel with libellous falsehoods. Worse still, he explicitly and repeatedly demonised the Jewish people. His occasional claims that he identified with the Jews and his acknowledgement that they had been allies in the great fight against South African apartheid generally morphed into his grotesque and incomprehensible accusation that the Jews of Israel had done to the Palestinian Arabs what the apartheid regime had done to the black population of South Africa.
  
  He minimised the suffering of those murdered in the Holocaust, asserting that “the gas chambers” made for “a neater death” than did Apartheid. In other words, the Palestinians, who in his incorrect view are the victims of “Israeli Apartheid,” have suffered more than the victims of the Nazi Holocaust. He complained of “the Jewish Monopoly of the Holocaust,” and demanded that its victims must “forgive the Nazis for the Holocaust,” while refusing to forgive the “Jewish people” for “persecute[ing] others”.
  When confronted with his double standard against Jews, he justified it on phoney theological grounds: “Whether Jews like it or not, they are a peculiar people. They can’t ever hope to be judged by the same standards which are used for other people”. There is a name for non-Jews who hold Jews to a double standard: It is called antisemitism.
  
  Tutu acknowledged having been frequently accused of being antisemitic, to which he has offered two responses: “Tough luck;” and “my dentist’s name is Dr. Cohen”.
  
  Thus the “apartheid” libel against Israel, a commonplace today in so-called “progressive” circles. It is, of course, mind-blowing that Tutu, of all people, could hold that Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East and where all its citizens patently enjoy equal civic and religious rights, practised apartheid.
  
  But the idea that his belief was the result of intersectionality has surely got that the wrong way round. For he helped put rocket fuel behind the “apartheid” lie. As Jay Nordlinger, author of a history of the Nobel Peace Prize, wrote in 2014 about the prize’s winners:
  
  The most harmful of them is Desmond Tutu: because he is a South African hero who, for decades, has peddled the lie that Israel is an “apartheid state”. Coming from him, it is more harmful than from (the countless) others.
  
  For while he demonised and delegitimised Israel with falsehoods and distortions, he was muted in his criticism of atrocities in the developing world. After 9/11, he soft-pedalled criticism of Islamic extremism

      Yes. A few decades ago I worked with a South African Ph.D who’d emigrated to NZ. She used to work in SA’s nuclear program during the apartheid days and she told me that there was a secret agreement between SA and Israel to cooperate with each other on their respective programs, because none of the other nuclear nations would work with either of them, back in those days.
      
      Obviously nothing official has ever been released so who knows, but it seemed logical for that to happen given conditions at the time.
      
      But regardless of that, I don’t understand why some to most people in the conservative camp can’t bring themselves to the simple recognition of the actual and evidential treatment of the Palestinians by the Israeli’s. Pretending such objective recognition is anti-semitic is antithetical to logic and common sense, yet such attitude abounds in my fellow political travellers.
      
      It’s an interesting phenomena. It’d be even more interesting to compare those conservatives who think as I do on the Israel-Palestine question with those who think as I do on the vax question, and vice-versa.
      
      I suspect there’d be quite a big venn diagram intersect on that.

        Not just on nuclear matters. Israel and South Africa cooperated in many fields, and Desmond Tutu would have known this. Their common interest was as countries under siege. Economic and currency management was similar, but there were many detailed instances which I have now forgotten. One that comes to mind is that many “Jaffa” oranges sold in NZ were from South Africa.
        Perhaps the Israelis learned their present ingenuity at cooperation with other countries from their experience with apartheid South Africa.
        On your other point Reid, I think that most Israelis would agree that the Palestinian Arabs are oppressed – former PM Ariel Sharon certainly said so, but would argue that it is necessary so to avoid their own genocide.

Yesterday I tried to watch the Netflix movie ‘Don’t Look Up’. I got half-way through and gave up in disgust.

The basic premise of the movie is that scientists discover an asteroid is going to hit Earth, but people just laugh it off, ignore it, and go on about their lives. It’s supposed to be an (incredibly unsubtle and ham-fisted) analogy to climate-change. The problem is trying to claim equivalence between these two cases is just complete and utter BS.

Orbital mechanics is an extremely precise and well-tested science. A small number of equations can give you the exact position of an object in space to very high accuracy. Its predictions get proven every time a space mission reaches its destination successfully, and every time your GPS gets you where you need to go. If astronomers locate an asteroid that will hit Earth, they’ll fairly quickly be able to tell us exactly when it will hit, how massive it is, and what the impact speed will be.

In comparison the uncertainty around climate-change is huge. Yes there is broad consensus that human emissions are heating the planet. But beyond that basic premise things rapidly get extremely hazy. Exactly how much different gases contribute, how much heating will happen for different levels of emissions, how quickly temperatures will rise, the exact consequences of different levels of heating… the uncertainty bars around each level are huge.

However one thing is fairly certain about climate change – it is not going to be an extinction level event. With the exception of a few runaway “tipping point” scenarios (generally considered extremely unlikely) human civilization could continue to exist even if we end up with relatively high (2.5 – 3 degree C) levels of warming. Yes we would have more extreme weather events, ecological shifts, and sea level changes. Yes, the potential damage could be huge, and lives would be lost. But the effect would not be anything near an extinction-level asteroid impact, a multi-thousand megaton explosion which would kill every single human being (and 99% of all plant and animal species) on the planet in a relatively short time.

Trying to equate these two situations is so absurd it should be laughable. In comparing these completely incomparable scenarios, the creators of this movie have unintentionally said far more about the modern climate-activism movement than they have about the debate on climate-change. They have only demonstrated what a hysterical doomsday-cult it has become.

  You have misread the purpose of satire. The film does not attempt to pretend that a comet strike is *just like* climate change.
  A satire deliberately exaggerates a scenario to draw out a view of human nature. And the view of human nature presented in Don’t Look Up is not completely unfounded.
  To misread the situation so completely, I can only imagine that you would have hated Dr Strangelove on the grounds that no American general could be so paranoid about fluoride in the water that he would engineer a nuclear war.
  I found the film to be entertaining, although from daily perusal of Kiwiblog I need no reminder that many folks will routinely decry any expertise which happens to conflict with their personal interests or prejudices.

      The idea that honours should only go to people for unpaid work would rule out about 80% of all honours. The idea of the honours system, imperfect as it must be, is to recognise service to the country in its many forms. Military personnel, scientists, academics, artists, business owners, etc, are all paid for their work, some very well indeed, but I see no need to deny them recognition of their excellence and service on that ground.

    Christchurch readers over the decades had been entertained by some great scribes in the Press, such as the sports writer Dick Brittenden.

Nomiki Konst is a Democrat Socialist, woman with influence in New York and increasingly across the USA among younger people. It is worth listening to see how she works – loud, rude, irrational, uninterested in facts and data of any origin. Elsewhere she explains that climate change is a “woman’s movement thing” and that it is “about women asserting their position”. She also uses climate change to push her socialist agenda for the poor, for greater taxing of corporations and the rich. No need for logic, science, research – it is about feelings and ideological agendas. These women are future leaders holding the levers of power. They are clever, articulate, demanding and determined.

And we ought to know better than anyone. We have one here in Aye-oh-tee-a-row-a.

The New Years Honours List is worse than usual. Damehoods for Lisa Carrington and Sophie Pascoe are over the top. Great sportswomen though they are, they are successful in minority sports only. For kayaking, for example, the competitors are pretty much from OECD/ Euro countries only. The gold standard is John Walker or Peter Snell, successful against a truly global field.

As for Robert Gillies, his main claim to fame seems to be that he’s the last survivor of the Maori Battalion. I would have thought that long life would have been its own reward.

I’m not criticising any of these or other recipients; rather, it speaks of Labour’s obsession with intersectionality in terms of handing out gongs.

      Having some general knowledge I think you are referring to Barry Smith who was proven in time (think he died a while back?) to be correct in some of his predictions based on 2000 year old written historical claims. However from memory he also made claims that have not come true as well.
      
      I do think though that a cashless society is coming very soon, it makes pragmatic sense. Given Sweden already is linking a chip under the skin to their perssonumber would not be surprised the world goes digital soon, with a data id for everything the new normal.
      
      Happy to be wrong, but a one world govt enabled to control the population through a technocratic system makes sense if you are thinking globally.
      
      From this a populist saviour with high poll ratings and controlled narratives from a compliant media to rule all makes sense from a global reset leadership point of view.
      
      The coincidence that people have been saying this lately or Barry in the 80s or people wtote about 2000 years ago, is just a coincidence too.
      
      If it happens it no longer is a conspiracy. It then must be explained away by the sole source of truth.

$210 million in funding is currently available to run the 2023 Census. This is a substantial increase on the 2018 Census, which is forecast to cost $126 million.

I see the government paid media and experts are trying to push the position that the DJ was incubating Omicron for 10/11 days, ie from before his first test before leaving the UK.
A quick google search clearly states that omicron has the shortest period of any variant so far, about 3 days. This is something any journalist can fact check.
Therefore logically he can only have caught it in MIQ.Even if everyone stays longer as many are calling for, it can be caught from the
time you get the last negative test and leave MIQ.

    A weak positive from a historical infection picked up by an amplified PCR test seems more likely. The kids in Europe are and have been riddled with it. If that is the case he would not be infectious and New Zealand can collectively breath a sigh of relief

I visited my cow cocky mate who asked me to go with him and see his three bulls. They had done great work back in September-October and he was proud of them. They will be on good grass until next September. I kept one eye on the bulls and one eye on the nearest fence as I judged my escape route, which fortunately was not needed. I also thought that he would have been better to use the imported bull semen rather than service bulls, but did not mention that as he had some good brandy waiting at his home. While all that is going on I stepped on a few pats. Before partaking of the French brandy I washed my gumboots and thought;
“that is Covid 19 that I am washing off.”

There seems to be general agreement that the need is for first-home buyers to have a place in the housing market.
What is the answer?
Obviously wages must rise, compliance costs must be reduced and more houses built.
There is a lack of tradesmen, shortages of materials and a need for more local body staff to speed planning approvals.
Does this suggest that inflation may not be as short-term as Grant Robertson is suggesting.

  That ‘strategy’ relies on investors buying new builds. Are they? There are fish hooks in new builds these days and property investors will generally have a very close eye on the numbers.
  
  The rental property market is a complex beast. Let’s call it balloon economics – poke one side and there’s a pop out somewhere else. Random.

Seafood NZ: SNA8 – decisions that ignore the Science:
David Parker’s solution to the abundant snapper fishery on West Coast NI was to go with the most conservative ‘option one,’ shocking the Taranaki Fishing Community.
Keith Manson, Egmont Seafoods, says they would not necessarily have been happy with more generous ‘option two’ but would have lived with it.
However, the science showed huge snapper numbers off Taranaki, so they were expecting ‘option three’ or four.
We were all planning for a reasonable TACC increase, somewhere between 600-1000 tonnes, because that was the vibe from Fisheries NZ.
They come out with a pathetic 300 tonnes.
Minister David Parker acknowledged the snapper stocks are in ‘good heath’ and would continue to increase if catch limits were considerably higher.
Citing concerns from iwi and recreational fishers, he increased the annual limit by 300 tonnes to 1600 tonnes, rather than the 2600 tonnes hoped for.
Trying to avoid (catching) snapper in area 8 is not easy (creating bycatch problems).

  It’s not the infections that are a problem. It is serious illness and deaths.
  
  Germany has an unusually high number elderly unvaccinated. And with Delta, it was these unvaccinated people who filled the hospitals. What happens with omicron is too early to predict. Hospitalisations should be lower. Way lower. But those who end up in hospital will be disproportionately unvaccinated.

    The metric I’m much more interested in is all-cause mortality, as that’s the only way to factor in both the protection the vaccines offer against Covid and the harm they are causing with adverse events.
    
    I for one aren’t convinced in the case for the vaccines. Even Pfizer’s own trial of 22,000 vaccinated vs 22,000 unvaccinated over 6 months had more deaths in the vaccinated group:

Harlene Hayne, former vice-chancellor of Otago University in the New Year honours becomes a “companion” of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

In October, it was reported Hayne was moving to Curtin University, Perth.

Someone may tell us whether Hayne was reponsible for the race-based entry system to the Otago Medical School. This means that non-Maori (or non-refugee, or non-Pacific Islander) candidates have to be super-super bright to have a chance of entry.

Parents have challenged this discriminatory admission legally.

Hayne announced in September that that the challenge will be “strenuously opposed.”

Her statement was made jointly, with three other university officials, including its director for Maori development, Tuari Potiki, and its director for Pacific development, Tasileta Teevale. The fourth official was “pro vice chancellor” Paul Brunton.

They said limiting special category entrants would “slow the rate at which a representative health workforce could be achieved”.

  I find it mind boggling that anyone would care about the ethnicity of their doctor. My only proviso would be a doctor with terrible English language skills.
  
  My doctor is of Chinese ethnicity. But that is simply because he was the first available in the neighbourhood when I moved to Christchurch.
  
  I commented below on the airline analogy. It would be inconceivable for Air New Zealand, or a flight school, to favour pilots of an ethnicity.
  
  Why is there not an outcry about such idiocy from Otago?

    Nearly all of us in NZ have ever been worried about the ethnicity of our medical professionals, they are just that, professionals. However the smug woke academics in charge at Otago are totally doing their best to ensure that ethnicity will be a problem for us in the future. Within their own little “saviour complex” environment they cannot see that in ten years from now certain ethnicities who graduated from their institution will be discriminated against, not just in their patient practices, but also by their peers. That is what happens when you patronise a racial group and belittle their ability to succeed on merit in order to alter reality.

  I’ve always thought it strange that admission to medical school was considered by so many to be the pinnacle of academic achievement for pupils leaving secondary school. Some areas of endeavour may be best served by selecting the highest marks in competitive exams, but there are other methods.
  For example, Malcolm Gladwell had a couple of interesting podcasts about the use of the LSAT for entry to the most prestigious US law schools. Seems like the top law schools might not even be selecting the people likely to be the best lawyers.

    That could be because the entry to those law schools may be ostensibly about their SAT scores, but these days other factors predominate. The most important qualifier is race (and if you want to get in, avoid being white or especially, avoid being “Asian” aka Chinese) followed by whether one of one’s parents attended the school, then other minority markers such as gender ID and the like, and then politics.
    
    That qualifies the majority of students, and for the few places left SAT may have an impact.
    
    And ther is one other, sometimes very important qualifier, can your parents make a hefty contribution to the said school, that alone can overpower almost any other disqualifiers except the wrong combination of race and politics.

Welcome back! What a fab week it’s been.
Sun, Sea, Sand, Food, Wine. And didn’t have to cook any of it myself. Must have tried about ten or more different Restaurants between Gulf Harbor and Omaha. God only knows what the poor people were doing for Christmas.

Talking of Omaha, thank goodness we don’t have a place there! Full of poseurs these days. It’s become like a 70’s housing estate. Little weatherboard shacks everywhere. I mean, who would want to live in a street miles from the beach named after a fish? ‘TUNA PL’ for instance. LOL!! Most of them are like that.

Got an Inflatable Paddle Board for Xmas from my partner. Blows up from the cigar-lighter in the Q5. Looks just like a proper one. Never got to stand up. Not that easy in heels. So just laid on it paddling along the shoreline with my hands. But you should see the Tan I’ve got! Everyone reckons I look silly now in my ‘WHITE SUPREMACY’ tee shirt.

We’re going to one of the girls from tennis’s place for New Year. They’ve got about 40 coming over. Putting on a professional fireworks display at midnite. I’m due to head over that way after lunch to help Fleur distribute a letter into the surrounding neighbors letterboxes, warning them to keep their pets inside when the crackers start.
That’s what we love about Remmers….. people always thinking about others.

Actually I’ve been reliably informed that the Police are actively patrolling. Good on them, foot patrol is an excellent deterrent.

I remember the mid 90s… one time even when a telegraph pole got dragged down and shoved through the picture window of a beach-front house, like a battering ram. Wasn’t a good look. The NIMBYs that have had events in Williamson Park cancelled the last few years should bear some responsibility – it was much better in the 00s and 10s because they had something to direct their energy to. $tuffed and Ferald clearly been told to lay off the dj. Not getting in to him like they did the Wanaka couple. Absolutely no commentary on that incident on their websites today. Why not?

Maybe that rumour on the tax payers union Facebook group that the dj is Clarke Gayford’s mate is correct and edict has been issued to ‘cease coverage’ of matter.

Alternatively maybe it’s totally infeasible that someone could get 4 negative tests and then test positive with omicron. So better not draw attention to this dilemma.
