For those who missed out on St Patrick’s Day festivities yesterday, never mind. Today is Sheelah’s Day. Sheelah was believed to be the wife or daughter of St Patrick. Although her feast is no longer widely celebrated in Ireland, it has remained popular with parts of the Irish diaspora. It is marked, of course, by the heavy consumption of alcohol.

        Particularly noted in the successive waves of immigration in the US, where it took several generations for the Irish, and later the Italians, Jews and eastern Europeans to get recognised as fully human.         That’s a tired old talking point with no basis in reality. The US only used to allow white immigration; the Irish were seen as white, while also being seen as somewhat inferior. The main prejudice against them was anti-Catholicism, but the progressive Left hate admitting that Christians have ever been persecuted anywhere, so they’ve created alternate history where they weren’t white.

His first target is the proposed “glass container deposit scheme”. The government thinks this will improve recycling. Supermarket carparks will have machines. You load up your car with your empty bottles and drive to the supermarket to feed your bottles to the machine in exchange for 20 cents per bottle.

Or you can have the friendly rubbish collectors empty the yellow bin from your house ?. I know what I will be doing.

As Eric points out, such a scheme could reduce the guilt of littering. You are sitting on the beach drinking a beer or a coke. No rubbish bin. “I’ll just throw it on the sand. Some kid will collect it for the 20 cents”.

The thing is there are thousands and thousands of public servants working on these oddball policies while the country is burning to the ground.

And of course the new recycling programme will need to be named. That will be a complex task. I am picking “Karaihe Papatūānuku” ?

  There are at least two other unintended consequences with littering:
  * For many people, that 20c or whatever is not worth the effort so they chuck the bottle in the bin along with their other rubbish. Along come bottle miners who then dig out all the rubbish looking for the bottles and leave the rest of the rubbish strewn over the place. This happens in USA with people mining for aluminium cans.
  * Once people get paid to do something they should anyway, they become entitled and unpaid stuff becomes unpalatable. Cindy pays me to handle the glass rubbish. If she doesn’t pay me to do something with my chip wrappings and other stuff I’ll just throw them on the ground.

    Back in the good old days glass beer & soft drink bottles used to be refundable.
    Most people didn’t bother except kids.
    This meant school parents associations and the like used to have bottle drives that raised good money. Exhausting work as I recall.
    That was in the days of big beer bottles, but the clear glass soft drink bottles were more lucrative.

      The Bottle Drive at Palmerston North Boys’High School was organised with military precision. For weeks afterwards the school quadrangle was piled high with bottles of all shapes and sizes, especially large brown ones in crates of twelve. In its day, the Bottle Drive was a major fundraiser.

        Happy days. Unfortunately, this attempt to turn the clock back will be stymied by the unavailability of parents to take part in bottle drives due to the multitude of other activities requiring their attention on a Saturday morning.

      MCos- I remember the bottle drives back in the 70s as a school kid living in the inner city of Ponsonby and Parnell.
      
      Some people would decorate their front gardens with stacks of beer bottles.

    Their proposal basically ignores plastics 3-7.
    
    I made a submission, basically saying ditch the bottle recycling (an idea from the 70’s) and ramp up the household recycling portion to include all plastic types and build a recycling center for all plastic types.

    Thirdly this is just another tax. Most people will throw them in the yellow bin and the govt will get an extra 20c tax per bottle. It’s a bollocks idea that the Greens will love. It wont help at all with recylcling and will just add another government functions (glass taxing and collection services).

    Just another example of our good and kind government being a bit challenged.
    Do they have any idea of the logistics of operating over all of NZ?
    There will be a freight factor someone will have to pay. In the woke cities such as Auckland
    Due to the quantities sold freight won’t be a problem. But out in the small towns and villages. Who is going to pay for the collection and returns?
    Does the 20cent include GST it’s more likely to be 23cent
    23 cent is going to play havoc with the cost of living numbers.
    What happens at food banks. Will the poor people be able to cash in their bottles?

    How will payment be dispensed?
    If cash, vandals will figure out how to get the money.
    If manual, say, take a docket to the retailer for payment. What does the retailer get out of it for the extra cost of operating this?
    It is a shame these bureaucrats don’t actually get paid to think.

      During my youth, we took recycling seriously. We would collect bottles, take them to the local pub and cash them in. During the week, we would acquire more bottles from out the back of the pub and repeat the cycle.

  The MfE consultation document on the recycling scheme smacks of further state control and pushes even more costs onto the long suffering end consumer…
  
  – Mandated return stations will be the sellers of the containers/bottles (eg supermarkets, bottle stores, farmers markets, etc) who won’t do this without passing on costs
  – Return stations may have to option to reject returns for product that it does not stock or did not sell
  – Levy’s imposed on all containers/bottles
  – Levy is refundable, but only if one can has the inclination, or capacity, to return the container/bottle
  
  Just on that list, there are so many fishhooks.

  I read recently that they are going to fundamentally change the way that we do adoptions??
  
  They have also passed into law safe zones so there are no protests around abortion clinics. This means that lawful protest, even silently praying, is banned around abortion facilities.
  
  Obviously as DPF pointed out yesterday they are going to spend millions of dollars on a $29 billion plan to build 24 km of railway in Auckland.
  
  The trouble with this lot is that they think they are the smart people. They are the enlightened people, they are the good people and they will do whatever they want between now and the next election.
  
  No one is going to stop them. The media is not going to hold them to account.
  
  This shows the tragedy of single issue voting. When covid dominated our thoughts we all voted for an inexperienced government headed up by a relatively young woman with little life experience and a burning desire to bring socialist principles to every area of public life.
  
  Can we please please reconsider our vote come next election? The poor country can’t take much more of this.

  Interesting the responses here. We had a deposit on most glass bottles when I was a youngster back in South Africa. It seemed to work pretty well there, the big thing being that glass bottles were reusable. For most of the glass bottles, the local bottle store was a collection point. Go buy your weekly supply and drop of last week’s empties. The same process worked for the wholesalers who collected empties when they dropped off full. The bottles eventually worked their way up the stack to the bottling companies who washed, sterilized and reused. The big thing was no significant new infrastructure was needed as the it piggybacked off the existing routines. At the most the retailers needed a collection point and one staff member to man it, typically over the weekend, and a bit of storage.
  10c on a bottle was a lot of money back then, and most of our acquaintances returned the bottles. Also it had nothing to do with government, all the money was tied up in the “owners” of the bottles.
  While there was a good amount of bin diving to collect bottles I don’t recall there being issues with a mess around the bins, certainly no more than one would see from other hobos searching for food, etc. In fact I recall people too lazy to return their bottles would typically place them next to the bin knowing someone would pick it up.
  I earned my share of pocket money returning bottles. Currently there is no incentive to recycle or return, and my understanding is our recycle rate across the country is pretty poor. A bit of cash incentive would help, but it should be related to the real cost of the bottle and not driven by government.

    Two entirely different situations.
    The fluoridation fiasco is a cover up by local bodies that don’t want to admit their 3 waters infrastructure is a mess and will cost the ratepayers a fortune to modernize.
    The police commissioner could be put in the awkward position of being contradicted by the findings of the study Independent Police Conduct Authority report.
    One thing’s for sure the Nats are looking for looking for some sort of reason to claim he is either soft on crime or doesn’t have the confidence of the police rank and file.
    Same with Dr Bloomfield.
    Both will be gone at the earliest opportunity if there’s a change of government.

      Cuddles is safe from the IPCA. It is not called the Internal Police Coverup Authority for nothing. It takes years to get an answer and even if they find the police have acted wrongly, nothing ever happens, nobody gets fired or jailed. Even where a cop is accused of near perjury by the judge (see the crown V Lincoln “Asburton toilet firearms case”), nothing happens.

    Here’s a couple of speculative reasons (which may be better than Robertson’s spin why 3 Water reforms are needed)!
    
    *Labour’s covid/immigration rules prevented Wellington Water from bringing specialists back home to deal with the issue (or specialists left after being “stranded” & missing their families in Wellington) ??
    
    *Woke WCC Councillors wouldn’t approve Wellington Water new funding requests to remedy a number of issues (including fluoridation), preferring to use the funding for other special interest activities??

  It really is quite bizarre.
  
  Throughout the protest, we were fed the usual lines about how this was only a tiny minority of people, they were completely in the wrong from the beginning, the protestors were to blame for everything, the poor Wellingtonians were abused and threatened, children couldn’t go to school, etc. And that the police actions throughout were completely correct.
  
  Yet, given the opportunity to justify it, Labour shuts down any questioning.
  
  Why? For three weeks we were told ad nauseum by the media that the protestors were the baddies, and everybody else were the goodies. So what do Labour fear in being … open, honest and transparent ™?

    After all his efforts to treat the protesters like he treats the opposition in the house when protecting Jacinda failed miserably and seriously exacerbated the situation.
    
    He would have been totally pissed off and seeking retribution. An enquiry might have shown he alone was the catalyst that started the unruly behaviour by a few when the police mounted their final charge.

The media can make all the positive profiles they like but at the end of the day the only profile that matters is her social profile and it isn’t pretty. Give it a year or two and anyone who has worked for, or been associated with, her will have a blank on their cv and claim they were on the dole during that period. When the demonstrators were forced off Parliament Grounds by Police violence, immediately Aredern started talking about easing restrictions and ending mandates, she also said ‘this is nothing to do with the protest’.     If it wasn’t for National this road and the new motorways in Christchurch would never have happended. The motorways in CHCH were on the books for decades and Labour kept pushing them out. The Key govt pushed them up the list and now we have infinately better transport in and out of CHCH, the roads are a silver bullet for traffic flow and travel time.
    
    The Greens should also hang there heads in shame as anyone with a brain (not the Greens) knows the sitting in congestion and stop / start traffic causes by far the most gas usage and therefore emisions. By improving traffic flow you not only make peoples lives better but you also help the environment.
    
    Guess what, EVs and Busses need roads too. Trains are inflexible, once a route is set, thats it. Busses can change routes to suit demand, trains just run empty and then get decomissioned. Stupid Greens / Labour, arggh

      Right on the money RoboRob, I can easily traverse the southern burbs from semi rural Selwyn to the Estuary in around 30 minutes, out to 34 when the Lights on the Brougham St part do not co-operate.
      North via The Western Burbs not so gr8, Hornby intersection can be a bitch and around the Sawyers Arms Roundabout, once through the Clearwater roundabout its a breeze.
      Dont mention using Pound Rd though, I use it returning to the MWay via Greywacke just before Gardiners, it even has a NPD fuel stop before that merging lane assisted access.

      And mighty fine roads they are too, that ring route from not far from the park that comes out at Rolleston is awesome, at Rolleston in 20 minutes, rather than the half hour amble to get out of the city, the motorway north of Auckland which is a toll road is equally as brilliant, you would save the $2 odd in fuel avoiding the old road.       Earlier this year I heard one of the Labour Party commandants say on radio that the main reason for the delays and problems with the Transmission Gully project was because the previous government had entered into a public/private partnership to achieve it.
      And this proved conclusively that PPP’s were baaaaad and only the Labour Party government could do it properly.

I have a male colleague who is gay. Not a close colleague. And him being gay I never thought about. He is highly competent at what he does. Yesterday he mentioned that he had to go collect his son from preschool.

He and his partner had arranged for a woman to have the baby as a surrogate with one of the couple as the biological father.

I am sure this child will lots of love from the couple. They have money, a nice house, etc. Way more than the thousands of kids who have drop kick mothers and fathers.

That being said, it does not sit quite right with me. I guess I am attracted by the idea of a society with functional married parents. But maybe that is a forlorn dream. ?

    Every child has the right to a mother and a father. Sadly, occasionally the mother or father or both turn out to be hopeless at parenting or get divorced and so on- and the child may end up having a crap upbringing. That’s life. But that doesn’t negate the basic right of the child to have a mum and a dad. Gay couples who use surrogacy are focusing entirely on their own neediness and should get a dog.

  But its a binary choice for Society – to have hetero couples only you have to deny gay couples the opportunity for a family via a law. As a hetero I am slightly uncomfortable with same sex parents – its just different to how I feel. But I am more uncomfortable denying these rights, and particularly when being hetero has no impact on being a drop-kick or not – speaking as someone raised by a single mother, and who wouldnt have changed a thing.

        You could also term it in terms of opportunity rather than rights. I have the opportunity to have a family, and I am uncomfortable with denying others that opportunity via a specific law.

    Most kids are aware of the concept that not everyone has 1 of each type and that some people have some combination of 1 parent, 2 parents separately, 2 or the same type, or a total of four thanks to a break up and new relationships.
    
    My generation was the last to use phrases like “oh that’s gay” as a negative. We stopped using it after a while and when we left school.
    
    So kids with two parents of the same kind will be fine. Their parents will probably be way more committed and enthusiastic than some more unfortunate kids with useless straight parents.

        Ideologues can indoctrinate kids all they like, but the majority of kids know, and will always instinctively know, that two men having anal sex is an abomination and a perversion of nature. People still hold this view, but the simple reason this feeling of revulsion is expressed less and less is through the accompanying fear campaign. Fear campaigns are only needed to enforce ideas that are fundamentally wrong.
        
        Even among straight people, sodomy is hardly a loving act, but is more like a violent visitation on the subject. It’s irrelevant that they have the urge to do it. A lot of people have an urge to be immoral (in fact we all do, but part of being moral is the struggle to be that way). Normalising homosexuality (and now encouraging it at every opportunity) is a subversive anti-society instrument along the same lines as “free love”, promiscuity (and thus single motherhood), easy divorce, and easy abortion, in that they all fundamentally target and undermine the family (particularly the large family), consisting or a mother and father and several children. These things may seem fun or convenient in the short term, but fun and convenience cannot maintain a sound social order in the long term. Society has collapsed in proportion to the systematic undermining of the family (which is why religion, and particularly Christianity, needed to be discredited and undermined, because this is the original driver of such a family structure). If you are pro-gay, you are anti-family be necessity.
        
        High levels of depression, suicides and general disfunction among gays aren’t because they are bullied (although it no doubt occurs), it’s because they know full well that their behaviour is wrong and runs counter to nature. Ditto depression, suicides and general disfunction among those who embrace the other aforementioned “fruits” of liberal progressive doctrine. It’s all intimately connected.
        
        It is a paradigm case of going against the natural order for two gay men to use a surrogate to produce a child who will necessarily be raised without a mother. As others have mentioned, it’s a vanity project, and one among two individuals who are damaged on some level.

        It’s disappointing but probably not surprising that the old homophobic crap is still hanging around, and it would seem that the parents need to do a better job of teaching their kids not to be little shitbags. Same with teachers if and when they hear that sort of stuff.
        
        Sadly it wasn’t until after school years that some of my friends felt safe to come out of the closet and which triggered the change in my generation about how using terms like “gay” in a negative way actually do harm those around you without even realising it.
        
        I know of at least two from my cohort who killed themselves because they were conditioned to believe they were abnormal. That’s the kind of harm which needs to be stamped put, which is exactly the kind of harm people like Rodion promote.

        I don’t have any irrational fear of gays, I just have a very strong argument as to why their behaviour is self-evidently wrong morally, teleologically and physiologically. Is it really the “homophobes” who are the ones who are out of kilter, or is it instead the homosexuals and their “allies” (and whichever camp you identify with is irrelevant) who dismiss any challenges to their behaviour in this defensive name-calling manner?   From a moral perspective it is difficult to justify intentionally denying a child their biological heritage. And by that I mean a decision has been made by adults that an unborn child has no need for their biological mother or father. It’s the intent that matters here, as kids end up without biological parents for many reasons, but in this situation it is by design.
  
  As a parent it is patently obvious that men and women play distinctly different roles in raising kids and they aren’t interchangeable. There is simply no way I can replicate the relationship my wife has with our kids, nor she mine. And the differences are very much tied to our biology. They can’t be separated from it.
  
  But in a secular society, children are really just economic units. As long as they are raised to be good contributors to society then intentionally denying them a cornerstone familial relationship doesn’t seem to matter. I personally think gay parents who adopt, rather then create, are doing the morally right thing as they are more likely to be improving a potentially sad or bad situation.
  
  For a lot of people, as long as kids are loved and safe then that’s all that matters. I get that, I just can’t agree that as adults we should use the privilege of our existence to deliberately alter something so fundamentally important to a child’s identity.

      My thoughts exactly. Can’t we have a moral society with a few less irrelevant baubles instead of producing “tax paying assets” just to sustain an immoral society? People aren’t economic units. That’s the kind of attitude that comes from nihilistic materialism and having Mammon as the only god. High GDP is not the goal of social life. Morality (or a state of “the Good”) is ultimately living a harmonious life through respecting an observable natural order of things, both as a society and as individuals, and gays having surrogate children flies in the face of this aim.

  I think every child has the right to know who their biological parents are – who gave the sperm, who gave the egg (for the avoidance of doubt).
  
  Why? Because however unpalatable the thought may be to some, those are the genetic parents of the child and their medical history and information is relevant to the child’s medical diagnosis and treatment. That is why when you change doctors, they ask you about your parents’ health. Also, knowing who your genetic parents are helps stop you marrying your half-sibling.
  
  So my question would be, in these surrogacy arrangements, (1) do they actually know which of them is the father? and (2) how will they ensure ongoing access for their child to the relevant medical information from the mother?
  
  I always here claims in these cases that the child will not miss out on input from the other sex because the parents have friends. But friends are not parents. They may come and go. Will they really have the kind of connection with the child which enables conversation on intimate matters?

Ardern’s strategy to destroy kiwi culture rolls on. Yesterday the new history curriculum was announced. Chris Lynch gives a good summary below.
In essence it is critical race theory being deployed to brainwash our children into accepting cogovernance by 2040. As set out in He Puapua. No mention of the musket wars or the Maori colonisation of the Chatham Islands. It includes promotion of white guilt.
The consequences of this will play out in playground violence “hey bro, you stole our land”.
It will also ramp up our rising youth suicide. I know one woman who worries about her 13 year old daughter’s climate anxiety through the school climate curriculum. This will add guilt to climate anxiety felt by our children.
What kind of people are Labour? How dare they sacrifice our young to allay their own guilt over the imaginary past.
While this is going on our educational performance in STEM subjects continues to plummet.
I am really angry.

  Surely Maori were the first colonisers (roughly 800-odd years ago).
  
  Surely then the second colonisers were from Europe (roughly 200-years ago).
  
  Could the Chinese (in the latter 1800’s) be deemed the third colonisers? Granted their numbers were relatively small in comparison, but nonetheless many left their homelands to migrate to many countries including NZ and start a new way of life.
  
  Then could the fourth colonisers (post WW2) be the Polynesians that migrated in relatively large numbers in the 1950’s & 60’s?
  
  Then could the fifth colonisers be other Asian nationalities that started to migrate in larger numbers mainly from the 1980’s onwards?
  
  If so, NZ does seem to have a history of colonisation (good and bad depending on one’s viewpoint or biases, but on the whole “good”), but certainly not in the way that it is being portrayed by Maori radicals and lefties)!!

  I used to teach back in the day and would often add things not mentioned in the curriculum to add depth. Hopefully today’s teachers have the time and inclination. The musket wars are needed for background to the TOW, and Te Rauparaha’s war party slaughters of the Moriori in the Chathams and South Island (around Akaroa) show why the All Blacks’ ka mate haka is still controversial in the Chathams and amongst Ngai/Kai Tahu. That sort of stuff is really interesting for kids, especially boys.

      What she will mean (this is not me agreeing with her) is that is it not a core part of the curriculum that every child learns as they progress through school, and taught as a history programme.
      
      Indeed, a lot of schools do a good job of teaching our history, including mine which took us on a full battlefield tour from Pukekohe to Wellington (down the middle anyway).

    Power to you Clan. I shamefully used to think home schooled children had pious crazy parents, but over the past two years my attitude has completely changed. I now admire parents who dedicate so much effort in organising a quality independent education for their children. It certainly can’t be easy, but I would imagine a collaboration of smart and talented people could produce outstanding results. Furthermore it’s most unlikely that homeschooled children would ever be negatively impacted by the disruptive behaviour caused by children of ineffective parents.

  Have seen some of the teaching videos- basically ‘whitey bad man- “Maori was living in Utopia” before European contact. One teaching aid video mentions we “owned” all of NZ- Then they will show the map of NZ diminishing overtime.
  
  Firstly- Maori where and are Tribal -not one people as the woke are trying to portray.
  Secondly – there was no concept of ownership- you took the land by force – ie Te Rauparaha (same theory didn’t seem to apply to Europeans for some reason)
  Thirdly- most Chiefs ceded Soverignty so the could get the same protection as other Bristish subjects- the main thing they were seeking protection from -other Tribes.
  
  If you have school age children -show and interest in what they are being taught- and challenge it.

  That is true, but the flip side is also true. Ukrainian military depend on the support of the extreme Ultra-nationalists like the Azov Battalion
  
  The ongoing civil war in Eastern Ukraine is basically a gang war between the Ultra-Nationalists (Azov Battalion etc) and the separatists.
  The people who just try to get on with life are being screwed over the most. Where else in the world are government forces using aircraft and artillery to attack apartment blocks with little old ladies and families in them?
  
  It is not surprising to me that many in Eastern Ukraine are asking for Putin to intervene and protect them from their own government.
  
  I don’t think there are goodies and baddies. There are only varying degrees of baddies.

    My frustration has been at the automatic and unthinking adoption of the #IstandwithUkraine by so many, in the same way they jumped on the “covid is a deadly pandemic” narrative.
    There is much more nuance to the situation in Ukraine than most realise.
    This video is just one example of the dark side of this. On Ukrainian television, calling for the extermination of 1.5 million people in Eastern Ukraine.

    Fair point. That’s what happens when there is a political vacuum, it will be filled by radicals of one hue or the other. The recent rise of popularity of Peters in NZ is a good example. Many here are revolted and apparently surprised. They shouldn’t be. National’s failure to oppose Labour and their inane and repulsive covid policies was a very bad mistake. People want rid of Ardern, but so far, Luxon and National haven’t really offered anything that looks substantially different to Labour.
    Chris Bishop in particular has been a liability.

  If what’s contained in the link is true, it’s a very sad state of affairs that such information is not given wider distribution and thus debate.
  That aside, speaking for myself, I currently live in a country (NZ) where it’s also often impossible to extract the truth about internal affairs due to Govt lies and 4th Estate bias.
  Typical recent examples of this have been the Anti-Mandate demonstrations, associated Parliamentary Behavior, and the benefits and pitfalls of the Pfizer elixir commonly referred to as vaccine.

I have beeen following the vaccine data for 5 – 11 year olds. They are all coming due for their second dose. It seems to have polarised parents.

First dose is stuck at 53 percent – so about half of parents are not going to vaccinate their kids.

But the ones that DID vaccinate seem to be bringing their kids back for a second dose, with 20,000 done so far and the numbers ramping up each day.

      Natural immunity is stronger and longer lasting than any protection from the pfizer jab. We know any protection wanes rapidly and we know it is causing negative efficacy, hence the murmurings already beginning about a 4th shot going to be needed soon.

  And yet in Florida they are recommending against vaccinating children. No, it’s not political, their Chief Medical Officer looked at the science and concluded it is all risk and no benefit. And even in the UK looking at the latest government data the vax rate of adults is high, but the 1st dose vax rate of under 12s is stagnant at 2% (i.e. only those with serious health issues). The British children have all either had covid (and just got a cold) or they know it will be just a cold for children. It’s in Figure 3a:

  I have met people here who are petrified about their 3 year olds getting covid (because they’re not vaxxed). I don’t understand what part of the message “it’s mild for children” people haven’t understood.

As Bill Gates himself said “Omicron is a very effective viral vaccine, sadly more effective than the vaccines themselves” – well I paraphrased but that was the gist of what he said.       Unless your kid has serious health issues that make them high risk – eg cystic fibrosis or compromised immune system.
      
      The covid vaccines are probably the lowest risk choice for at least some of the population, and likely the majority if highly pathogenic strains like Delta are dominant. But likely for a lower proportion of the healthy population with Omicron.

Just reading an article by a contributing writer in a foreign newspaper and a line resonated with me about the world today with so many issues.
Writer (Frank Giustra) says “It almost feels as if there is a universal collective denial of the obvious facts.”
That statement be applied to covid management, geopolitics, gender issues, economic/financial (mis)management, climate change hysteria et al.
What is going on?
The scary part is, particularly with the world financial systems and also the Russia/Ukraine conflict, that we may have just moved past the point of no return.
What does the exit look like from the high inflation/high global debt/low interest rates flywheel?
What does the exit look like from the US manipulating the world into WW3 to destroy Russia?
Sorry, no solutions to offer yet, just daily musings.

How cakes of chocolate can be 200 gms not 250 gms, cans of fish 185 not 200, prepacked fruit and vegetables whatever weight, packets of biscuits 160, 180, 200 or 250 gms.
Coffee refills 90 not 100 gms, packets of teabags 30, 50, 100, 200, toothpaste 90, 110, 120, 160 gms.
How many size changes are accompanied by a new price or even just new packaging.
The affect of weather on fruit and vegetable prices.
Are supermarkets totalling to blame for a package containing 1 kg of potatoes costing $9.99.
If we are talking about supermarket profits, we have to remove everything else when we equate them to food.
And we are no even starting to consider ‘healthy food.’

    Folks are collateral damage in many contexts, and that is sometimes justified. Lives would be saved if the national speed limit was reduced to 20kph, alcohol was banned altogether and every man between the ages of 16 and 40 put in preventive detention; but we don’t do any of that. Lives would have been lost if we’d kept the border open, not locked down, not masked, not socially distanced, not vaccinated; and yet there’s a case to be explored that that collateral damage would have been worth bearing to avoid the lasting cost that all those measures have burdened us all with.
    
    The point here is not to defend Little. He’s a moron, and his incompetence is unforgivable. It is to say that you can’t judge a policy solely on whether it will save or cost people’s lives. Uncomfortable as it may be, individual human lives do have a finite economic value.

      It was clear very early on that QALYs from draconian covid measures would far outweigh any savings. Those heretics who dared suggest such a thing were branded psychopaths, smeared, shunned and vilified. The Great Barrington Declaration one prime international example. Covid Plan B here in NZ was another.
      As time has passed and real world, empirical evidence has emerged it is clear that these people were right and that our chosen “experts” were wrong by a very large margin.
      Those responsible for the policy decisions made are guilty of malfeasance. They cannot say they didn’t know. Many renowned experts stated clearly, that lockdowns and social distancing etc were not only a bad choice, they were experimental reactions. That we have had long understood pandemic preparedness plans that work which were ditched unceremoniously for this novel, experimental approach.
      The same can be applied to the rushed, experimental vaccines. We are still living in this experiment and the outcomes are disastrous already. What they will be ultimately remains to be seen.
      You are right in one regard, human lives can be measured in economic value, they also have human values. This is what QALYs measure. Here’s one assessment from Professor Gibson at Waikato.

Ardern has quietly, sneakily, announced introduction of the revised history curriculum for schools.

The word must have gone out to State TV and State radio and to the bribed media to play this down while Ardern is under increasing pressure.

What a lie when she claims the motive is that New Zealand kids need to learn their history. We nearly all have at least a basic grasp of our history.

Ardern wants New Zealand kids indoctrinated in Woke, Black Lives Matter-style, Maorified history. The history of the current wave of Left-wing revision in history: Whites are the villains, ancient colonialism is the cause of present woes.

This comes in parallel with a slide in our teaching standards in maths.

Our teachers are a core support group of Labour. They and Ardern have buggered the education system so thoroughly that only privatising vast parts of it will save the country from an economic slide.

In the meantime we should explain to our kids and grandkids that they are to be brainwashed and lied to.

Adults need to know where political parties stand on this and know in time for the next election.

Otherwise, the end of the Ardern road will be a remote, isolated, small country called Aotearoa, speaking a tiny indigenous language, with Third World education standards in maths, science and history, and with a racially disadvantaged non-Maori majority.

      David Seymour was on ZB and criticising it, in an interview with one the contributing historians.
      He called it “myopic” and “divisive” and said it does nothing to prepare NZ youth to being citizens of global society, or our shift to being multicultural.
      It understood history entirely though the “exercise of power” & “colonisation”, rather than understanding change from technology/innovation or other lenses.
      The academic refuted all of it, of course.

Yesterday I was listening to Andrew Dickens on Newstalk ZB. He went into a speel about tax cuts being inflationary and then as is par for the course in these matters had to mention Luxon’s $8000 tax cut.

I texted him saying his comments were ridiculous, that the tax cuts will be used for making ends meet – such as grocery bills, not buying a new TV or fridge, and was he auditioning for a job with TV1/3 as the standard of his comments would surely merit such a job.

Surprisingly he texted back saying “no but most will be getting more than a thousand. Luxon will get 8000 more. He already makes ends meet”

There we have it folks. A typical leftie “Rich Prick” jibe and a complete absence of even bothering to look at the data for the tax cuts proposed by National. If he had done so, such as looking at David’s tax table he would have seen that the maximum tax cut was $1073.

Lazy knee jerk journalism. Please come back soon HDPA.

  At present, it’s those who contribute nothing or the least who are the ones whose lifestyle is being supported by those who contribute the most.

      I got excited when I read the headline.

      Then I read the article. The substance is nothing like the headline.
      
      “He spoke to media this morning with his Covid-19 response spokesman Chris Bishop after issuing a call for the Government to immediately scrap vaccine passes for all but large, indoor events.”
      
      “In a statement this morning, Luxon also called for all scanning requirements to be dropped immediately and to get rid of vaccine mandates for all young people aged under 18.”
      
      So what’s a “large event”? 20? 50? 100? Why not just drop them completely?
      Why only drop mandates for under 18s?
      
      The whole covid act needs to be repealed as soon as possible, vax passes need to be gone immediately, the same with mandates.

        Once again our speedway will run tomorrow night, on a beautiful autumn evening, with four enclosures, each with 100 spectators. We’d far rather throw the gates open, but this is the best we can do at the moment, until Ardern makes an announcement. Probably unlikely they will all go but this govt might start sensing many Nzers are getting sick and tired of even hearing the word covid especially when they can see with their own two eyes how the rest of the world are getting on with life and living with this flu virus.

My 3rd inbound trip since October 2020.
When MBIE was “”in charge”” it was an effing shambles.

It was great to have the adults back in charge.
Only one extra step from pre covid. That being the medical document check adding about 40-90 seconds to arrival time.

Sadly also normal loadings on the SIngapore to Auckland flight…ie FULL.

With border restrictions about 30% full so plenty of spare seats for inflight snooze.

YouGov in the US have recently polled people on what they believe the size of various demographics are and the results were scary:

People massively overestimate the size of minorities (clearly not understanding what minority means).

“This holds for sexual minorities, including the proportion of gays and lesbians (estimate: 30%, true: 3%), bisexuals (estimate: 29%, true: 4%), and people who are transgender (estimate: 21%, true: 0.6%).”

“It also applies to religious minorities, such as Muslim Americans (estimate: 27%, true: 1%) and Jewish Americans (estimate: 30%, true: 2%). And we find the same sorts of overestimates for racial and ethnic minorities, such as Native Americans (estimate: 27%, true: 1%), Asian Americans (estimate: 29%, true: 6%), and Black Americans (estimate: 41%, true: 12%).”

This stupidity doesn’t seem that important until you realise that the various pushes for diversity and inclusion are based on the insane estimates rather than the true numbers.

They say TV etc should closer resemble the real world but they base it on completely made up, grossly incorrect numbers. This of course results in massive overrepresentation of those minority groups.

This is very advantageous to Socialists etc because it allows them to pretend equality doesn’t exist etc (or is far worse than it actually is).

  It’s not surprising actually. Many people probably base their estimates on television programmes they watch. “Reality” shows depend on who applies to them; if gay couples seeking a new home are over-represented in applications, they will be on the show too.
  Script writers, meanwhile, need to be seen t0 be inclusive. The audience can only follow a handful of characters; if a central cast of six includes one non-hetero character, one member of a minority religion and one non-white person, you have an over-representation of “minorities” – multiplied across every show.

  You don’t even have to be a Brit to command a ship under the British Flag! When I went to sea in the ’60’s you had to have a minimum number of Brits in the command positions to wear the UK Ensign.
  
  Now anyone can and the people who can afford these Floating Gin Palaces love having a Red Ensign out the back.

  It’s nobodies damn business what agreements have been struck between employees and employers except themselves and the taxman.
  
  However I fully expect Labour and Greens to believe this is yet another perfectly justified forced intrusion into the lives of NZ citizens and is yet another perfect example of the constant chip, chip, chipping away of our fundamental rights to live our lives free from state intrusion.

  Most employers hire and pay employees based on the job they are doing. There are some employees doing the same job that are better than others. If an employee doing a great job finds out that other employees not nearly as good are getting the same pay they would be unhappy. The results would be a negative incentive to work hard. The good employees would be unhappy and possibly leave. Then you are stuck with the poorer employee. Conversely, a poor employee discovering they are being paid less will be unhappy. Either case you will have unhappy people. Pay should be based on productivity not on the knowledge of what others are being paid.

Not sure why Hillary Clinton is still considered a Politician. She hasn’t had a job in 12 years. She served as an elected official for 8 years, from 2001 to 2009…that’s it! American voters told her to go away, twice, including her own party in the 2008 Primaries. She went to college for that long, but nobody still calls her a student…
