While our Prime Minister try’s to convince New Zealander’s on how great thou are, her team of bumbling MP’s show what a bunch of out of there depth no hopers they are.
The Health system is in crisis with Minister Andrew Little blaming everyone else except himself.
The Economy is in dire straits and with inflation and interest rates rising and people are hurting with prices expected to hurt the public by a extra $150.00 a week.
Housing is now out of control and not helped by a Minister that thinks it’s in the public interest to spend funds that should used for housing and have state houses achieve there warrant of fitness that this Government made law, instead using them fund to do up their Kianga Ora offices instead.
Now you have our prisons with less prisoners because of Labours kind and caring policy costing more with the headlines screaming ” Expensive Failure New Zealand’s cost per prisoner rises while jail population dwindles. This from a Minister Kelvin Davis that has no ideas.
This Government will go down in History as a Government of failure that has dug a hole for itself with Minister’s and back benches that are inept and out of their depth with a Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister show of arrogance that shows no bounds.
If the Media were honest with themselves they could make the case that this Government and their Minister’swould struggle to get 5 out of 10 in any portfolio.

    Now if there were recidivism targets and transparent reporting against them we the taxpayers may well give the spending a tick. Minister Davis tells us the extra spending has gone into better rehab programmes, sadly fallen behind under 9 years of neglect.

  Yes Warren indeed it’s a sad reflection of our society that media funding is now largely provided by the state and big corporations. Also that many young fledgling journalists today seem insufficiently informed of world history to consider repeating patterns, and seem untrained in critical thinking as is necessary to seek the unadulterated truth. Either knowingly or unwittingly these journalists now protect the interests of their corporate and state benefactors, at the expense of freedom of information, expression and individual liberty. There is no escape though, as in time their own children will inherit this ever more corrupt corporate world.
  
  This is why many smart people now turn to the burgeoning independent media companies filling the void in seeking that unadulterated truth. Conversely these new media often rely on ‘old school’ voluntary or part paywalled subscriptions from individual members of the public (to the few uninformed scowling KBers, I’m certainly not referring to Toni on Twitter or Frank on Facebook who heard something down at the dairy).

      Either that or only fund the high value stuff (engineering, real science, medicine, law etc).
      
      But I think you’re right: once you open up the funding then it will inevitabley expand to what it is now – a situation where universities are now more interested in Bullshit Studies than things which need skills in society (engineering, etc).

        Funding linked to the census.
        A lack of any service occupation, like Health service, engineering etc. Determined by the census, becomes the education funding model for 5 years.

        If we cut out all the courses ending in ‘Studies’ we would save a huge amount of money and be able to fund medicine, engineering properly.
        We would also be able to give students a reasonable stipend, renewable annually dependant on good performance, to fund their studies.

    Captain: Quite so…and as I said on GD on Dr Pause yesterday, in trying to normalize morbid obesity, she and her fellow travellers were and are doing great harm to a generation of kids.
    
    Morbid obesity is not normal and healthy, and “fat but healthy” has now been discredited by most commentators in the medical profession, although it is true that some fatties don’t have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, and some skinny chaps have one or both. I’m not sure why that is, but it’s irrelevant anyway.

      Chris R: Quite so…and that is why libertarian arguments about the supposed “right” not to wear motorbike helmets or wear a seatbelt must fail here, while they are perfectly valid arguments in countries like the US which have pure “user pays” health systems.
      
      And furthermore, I am told that surgeons in this country frequently refuse to do certain operations unless or until the prospective patient loses X amount of weight.

  Health problems of fat people are not caused by being fat but because the medical system discriminates against them. Apparently.
  
  The MSM allowed her to publish her misinformation that has helped to encourage many people to accept, and even relish, their disease rather than seek help.

  I’ve never felt it appropriate to speak ill of the dead. I do happen to know that she did not die due to a medical event, nor of any natural causes.
  
  Read into that what you will, but recent events had led to a large amount of negativity directed at her.
  
  Words have power, and we should all do well to remember this. My rule is never to say online what I wouldn’t say to a person’s face, and while that has been tested, and bent at times, it serves me well.
  
  There are more than a few commentators on here that could learn how to constructively disagree.

      Milkey, KB is a place where the realities of life are observed, certainly relative to mainstream media. Civility is nice but it needs measured with reality checks.     Slightly: You are hinting at suicide…if you know, or have good reason to suspect, that that was the cause of death then say so; media are allowed to go where once they feared to tread on that these days, so our host cannot get into hot water from publishing (in the legal sense) what you say.
    
    Are you suggesting she might have felt humiliation about that paper from a made up person which was endorsed by her and other luminaries in “fat studies”?

Wellington City Council are having the chairs from the (closed) main library auctioned off. They’re rather designery & all very nice; would seem to have plenty of life left in them.

However, it’s not been explained why they have to be disposed of rather than be retained for the will-be-built-one-day new library.

It also defies belief that the proceeds (est. $100k) are being donated to charity. Not only is this an insult to ratepayers, I wonder whether this is even legal – despite general competence it’s not the Council’s job to effectively give away public assets.

      Biofuels are a system that grows plants by soaking up CO2 which get digested and converted into ethanol (releasing a lesser amount of CO2 in the process). Once burned it all goes back to CO2 again. This is apparently sustainable and green.
      
      Agriculture is a system that grows food by soaking up CO2 (releasing a a lesser amount of CO2 in the atmosphere). Once consumed in human bodies it all goes back to CO2 again. This is apparently evil and unsustainable.

However, they never lose sight of causes to promote. Once those causes were big important equality issues such as civil rights, equality for women, support for the poor and downtrodden. This is an object lesson in intersectionalism; plus the way that the Left will eat their own in response to just one gaff (Campion’s ill-judged comment about her difficulties being greater than those of the Williams sisters).

However, my point was that Hollywood commentators & Oscar voters appear to weigh in the balance factors extraneous to relative artistic merit. There’s been a hoo-hah in recent years about black directors/ artists etc, for example. Radio NZ shares in this nonsense.

        I’ve only seen Power of the Dog. I thought it was excellent. Their is, of course, no precise way of judging artistic merit. Some of my favourite films possibly have very little artistic merit, or critical acclaim. I don’t like lots of films that have been acclaimed or awarded.
        It’s quite possible that people let their enthusiasm for social change, or for conservatism for that matter, affect their subjective opinions. The Oscars is a business seeking to remain relevant in an era of changing tastes.

  It is a good example of “shit falls downwards” or “rotten apple” where large organisations try to peg all the failing on individuals rather than the system.
  
  Yes, this individual member was probably not up to the job (yet), but there were other massive failings here.
  
  When training rounds and live rounds get mixed up then that is no longer a problem caused by one individual. It is a huge break down in the ammunition handling system which indicates a massive failure in management.

      Of course it was the individual’s fault in that he should check his equipment every time he uses it.
      
      However the point that I was attempting to make is that there are clear problems in the system if training rounds and live ammo are getting mixed up.
      
      It’s not a matter of which one is to blame. They are both to blame.
      
      That is also the case with Baldwin. Many problems there: he should have checked himself. Also, it is problematic when live ammo and blanks were both present on set.
      
      That they took their prop guns out for a bit of shooting with live ammo is inexcusable. From my limited understanding Baldwin was responsible for both: both as the trigger-puller and the person in charge of the set.

I’d be interested if any kbloggers have done research into Ukranian oligarch Igor Kolomoisky and the influence this man has had on Ukranian politics through his involvement as a patron of Zelensky, through funding far right militias such the Azov Battalion, the energy company Burisma (of Hunter Biden fame) and so on. He seems to have been a very powerful player in Ukranian affairs, having even at one point been appointed as Governor of a Ukranian province. So many fingers in so many influential pies.

  Very true. We did send a contingent of Police and possibly Military there recently, along with the Aussies but I haven’t heard if they are still there or have returned.
  Recently, Aust has been very active in building its Military in terms of capability and size along with hardware and personnel to combat the very real threat of China to our area of interest, but we have done squat.
  I agree with you bjools, this threat is not exactly new and Cindy and Mahuta’s response has been nothing more than head in sand stuff.

    NZ has made extensive contributions to peacekeeping in Solomon Islands this century. Our troops were withdrawn a few years back, but we sent about a 100 personnel back there for a while last year after the latest riots.
    The conflicts in Solomon Islands remain unresolved, and the temptation is for different factions to seek outside support.

He was saying something about the success of his government in lowering the jail population by twenty-five percent, in allowing thousands of violent criminals to remain out on the streets.

The thing my partner picked up up on, was how Kelv seems to have taken on even more of a Maori accent.

    Whatever the family are offered and accept, if there are multiple income streams then good chance the household will be paying market rent. So what’s wrong with a private rental at market rent? Probably Omicron since it now dominates here) and he had symptoms of adult flu for a few days (sore throat, tired, chills , aches, fever). Great vaccine that! Dr Cat Pause’s death shows a major issue we have in our universities these days. Labour MP, Dr Deborah Russell called her an Activist and an Academic but that’s a huge problem.

How can someone be a reliable expert on an academic subject when they are actively participating in activism on that subject? Last weeks fake paper which her and her activist friends lauded is a perfect example. It conformed to her activist principles so she gave it academic approval. This is a very bad thing for academia.

We need to ensure controls are in place so these Activist Academics (Activist Teachers too) separate their activism from their teaching and publishing.

    You (deliberately?) misunderstand my point. I 100% agree with their right to activism. The issue is that there is no academic value of work done by someone showing a clear bias (an example the Left loves is climate scientists working for Big Oil). Having that bias and even expressing it is fine, but expressing it in the academic work makes that work worthless.
    
    Your example is irrelevant because the roading engineers beliefs aren’t affecting their work.
    
    A relevant example would be an Accountant that votes Labour or Greens and wants higher taxes. They have every right to advocate for higher taxes but when doing people’s tax returns they should still act within the law to make that client pay the least tax payable. There are significant ethical constraints on Chartered Accountants to ensure they act in the best interests of their clients. Academics jobs are to create and prove knowledge. Activism does not play a role in that.
    
    Universities need to work harder to ensure their employees act in the furtherance of academia, not activism (peer review is supposed to do this but as shown, it’s tainted by activism in some areas)..

He is arguing that University lecturers, who hold a captive audience, can introduce political propaganda when they like. Unlike anyone else, like a roading engineer, or an accountant, who would find that if they tried to be an activist, they wouldn’t have a business for long.       Your proposal would, of course, lead to the most absurd results. To take a trivial example, you would appear to support the notion that a toxicologist should be prevented from publicly airing the relatively common opinion that laws governing the use of tobacco, alcohol and marijuana should be consistent, and based on health risk rather than tradition.

        Again, you misunderstand. I would however have a serious problem with them offering a toxicology report to the Police switching out alcohol for Tobacco in a drink driving causing death case. Do you see the difference?   Perhaps not oddly enough (if folks realise I’m in Gizzy and know a bit about plants/gardens), but I’ve been well aware of the preparations that were taking place at the original location for their wedding (Bushmere Arms) then Young Nick’s Head Station.
  
  Sadly the gardener at Bushmere Arms died a couple of months ago.
  
  The garden installers at Nick’s Head Station are talking of retirement.

Fantastic move by David Seymour following his proposal for a referendum on Co-Governance.

I liked his wording.

“All political authority comes from the people by democratic means including universal suffrage, regular and free elections with a secret ballot.”

Willie Jackson took issue with Seymour on Twitter regarding a debate on Co-Governance, and Seymour pointed out that the wording he used was taken VERBATIM from the NZ Labour Party Constitution.

Rod Drury giving $100k to ACT to stop the Government giving more power to the Maori elites is totally in line with his giving hundreds of thousands ($2m is technically millions?) to Ngai Tahu related charities despite it being a very wealthy Iwi. It seems like giving money and power to the people at the top of the Iwis doesn’t actually do much to help ordinary Maori.

“One of two things is going on inside the government.

One, they know they are in trouble and likely to lose the next election so they’re going hell for leather and getting as much of their agenda in place as they can. Or are they literally are completely removed from the real world and don’t have a clue?

How else do you explain today’s activity at Cabinet that involves them moving forward on Māori self-determination plans?

The plan comes out of He Puapua, the document they have. They tried to pretend it didn’t exist and when it did exist, they played it down as no big deal.

The document that talks of separate parliaments, legal systems, and health services. What part of that can they possibly believe is a vote winner? What bit is the bit that excites middle New Zealand? What part of their plan to get re-elected involves going to ordinary, everyday New Zealanders and explaining that running separatist systems is something that we are all going to love and embrace?

It’s a vote killer, short of the clique of separatists who long for this nonsense. It is political death and yet here we are today looking to move it forward.

It’s also a two-fold debate. The first bit that has aggrieved so many is the fact this hasn’t even been debated. No one asked us, we haven’t talked about it, and it wasn’t part of the election. It’s a bit like three waters, what part of the election campaign featured three waters? It’s been done in secret.

The second part, even if you did debate it, what possible sense is there in going down a separatist path? What country having done down a separatist path thought they had made the right call?

The Labour Party some of us have voted for in previous years was not this party. Labour was once centrist with a hint of the left. Their welfare was a little more generous, their social programmes a little more widespread, and the hiring policy in the public sector a little more liberal. But separatism has never been, nor should it, ever be part of any major political party in this country.

The Māori Party? You expect it. But Labour? The party of Savage, Fraser, Nash, Nordmeyer, Lange, Palmer and Kirk? Come on.

How has this been party been so badly hijacked by the radicals? Why is today’s decision even on the agenda?”

I’ve come around to the belief that Face-Masks should probably be mandated…..particularly in Asian Supermarkets.

I often head over Dominion Rd way in search of the genuine Hoisin Sauce & Peking Duck Pancakes.
I must say there has been a noticeable drop in the number of locals that you would normally find coughing & spitting in the Vege aisles.

    The only bloke I knew who drove around in Ferraris, Lamborghinis, was a car dealer in Bangkok who lived a couple of doors away.
    He imported them to order at great expense for precocious young entitled rich gentlemen who’d never done a day’s work in their life beyond some international university.
    While he waited for the balance of the money to come through he’d park them out the front of his house and anywhere else he could find a spot.
