Tuku Morgan (Waikato Tainui), is a member of the Three Waters working group who in March dismissed claims that Māori would own the country’s water infrastructure under the reforms.
“There is a view being promoted by some of the councillors around the country that this is a Māori grab for power, that we are interested in owning these water assets,” he told 1News.
“It’s absolute nonsense. We have always said, that we’re not interested in owning the water assets. What we’re interested in is the proprietor rights over water, and that is a discussion to be had with the Crown, not with councils.”

      I read/heard somewhere the other day that the next cab off the rank of Maori ownership claims is going to be Electrical Power. No, I’m not making this shit up. Remember, Maori have ongoing claims for ownership of the Frequency Spectrum and Air above Maori Significant Spaces.

        They’ve already been awarded a slice of the frequency spectrum. They will want more as new Western technology creates demand at new frequencies.
        
        Below is a link to the agreement the Labour Government reached with Maori in February on the spectrum.

        The Crown will allocate to the MSE (Maori Spectrum Working Group) to be held for the benefit of all Māori at no cost 20% of all future Commercial Spectrum allocations that are allocated using the Management Rights regime, or any regime that might in the future replace the Management Rights regime.

  When pre-contact Maori frequently invaded and raided the lands of other tribes, drove the latter off their lands, butchered the men and took possession of their resources, women and children, did they pay the former owners royalties or some other form of compensation?
  
  How were these royalties or other forms of compensation calculated?
  
  Was mediation ordered when the parties couldn’t agree?
  
  In the invasion scenarios, did the original owners retain proprietorship of their water assets. If not, why not?
  
  Perhaps Scott Hamilton could enlighten us how Maori managed these important and delicate issues.

    Modern science has proved beyond doubt that Maori used to live in a blissful and peaceful socialist utopia, complete with advanced technologies, economic systems, harmonious social and gender relationships, effective environmental management and stewardship of resources and wonderful conservation techniques. Antarctica was explored in the 1400s/1500s. All were happy through the superior religious and moral philosophies that effortlessly guided the thoughts of the populace.

  And Labour wants to ‘entrench’ an anti-privatisation provision so three waters assets cannot be privatised. An ‘entrenched’ provision requires a 75% majority to remove the entrenchment. However it also requires a 75% majority to enact it. Opposition (presumably National & ACT) will apparently not support entrenchment, so it would not get the required 75% majority.
  Also it is worth noting that the practical effect of entrenching an anti-privatisation provision would be the entrench the essence of the whole legislation.

    So Ngai Tahu will own and control all the South Island which includes all the rivers, the lakes, and thereby all the power stations for the whole of New Zealand.

  Exactly Yvette. I’ve been saying Maori Ownership of Water has been the goal ever since 3 Waters was first mooted. FFS people don’t get sucked in by an argument over water infrastructure. That IMO is a matter for another day.
  As I see this is that Maori will automatically assume they own water once they have the controlling interest in its means of management where they can dictate price and quantity.

        Yeah, but “no one owns water” gets you precisely nowhere in addressing the increasingly important questions that are raised regarding water.
        
        Who has the right to take it for their own use, or to place limits on the amount of it that others may take, or to restrict what they may use it for? Who may sell it? Who may put other substances into it, who is responsible for keeping it clean, who is responsible for ensuring that it doesn’t do damage?
        
        The answers to these and similar questions are not Nobody, and neither are they Everybody, and therefore these roles, rights and responsibilities must be assigned to Somebody, whether or not that Somebody is formally labelled “owner” or “proprietor”.

  Stopping or controlling access to water is a recipe for a few things:
  
  1/ Rent seeking – and that will mean excess pricing as there is no near free access as currently in place or no competitive access mechanisms to attack monopoly profits
  2/ Corruption as access can be arbitrarily denied via a direct No or excess pricing which can only be got around via Koha….
  3/ Ultimately violence. Denying or restricting unfairly access to water leads to extreme behaviour. Which is a gateway to violence. How our Left wing politicians can’t see this means either they are stupid or more concerningly they do understand this point and want violence to use as an excuse for implementing another hidden agenda (sounds conspiratorial but hey, He Puapua was not real until it suddenly was – they have a lot of form here)
  
  Its really nice that Tuku Morgan has described what the tribal leadership class want – control of water to benefit themselves – no one else except their direct supporters and the occasional benefit for other Maori to shore up broader support.
  
  First step to a Ethno State polity with the traditional Rangitira class having all the power and reap profit via patronage and corruption (think Tonga)

I read the headline Epidemic: German and Austrian Mayors Under 60 Are’Suddenly and Unexpectedly’ Dropping Dead and almost passed it by. But clicking revealed a sad litany of death notices, each with an accompanying photograph.

Two are recorded somewhat earlier than the onset of Germany’s mass vaxx campaign in Dec-2020, but after this date the deaths came thick and fast.

I’m sure it’s just an unfortunate coincidence because ‘Safe and Effective™’ rode into town alongside all vaxx consignments.

Dec 2021 is the highest mortality of any Dec on record, and the rate for each month since than is greater – this started before covid came into NZ.

Treasury’s first Wellbeing Report has been released. Key fact – (some) older folk are richer and happier than (some) younger folk.

Is this also a key fact?

The share of people in their early 30s who own their own home has fallen from 73% in the 1980s to 51% at the last Census in 2018.

Maybe, provided it takes into account the family members who rent from family owners, direct or through family trusts. There can be considerable financial benefits for both parties in these arrangements and they are common. There is pretty much no difference for the renting family from actually having their name on the title. One day, kids, this will all be yours.

From The Spectator: Why is Canada euthanising the poor?

There is an endlessly repeated witticism by the poet Anatole France that, ‘the law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.’ What France certainly did not foresee is that an entire country—and an ostentatiously progressive one at that—has decided to take his sarcasm at face value and to its natural conclusion.

Since last year, Canadian law, in its all its majesty, has allowed both the rich as well as the poor to kill themselves if they are too poor to continue living with dignity. In fact, the ever-generous Canadian state will even pay for their deaths. What it will not do is spend money to allow them to live instead of killing themselves.

As with most slippery slopes, it all began with a strongly worded denial that they exist.

Worth reading in full. The Spectator is one of the few MSM sources I subscribe to.

  I’ve long held a very unpopular view that we should have universal euthanasia at 75 regardless of race, gender or wealth. Retire at 65, 10yrs of guaranteed income, no having to worry about making that retirement nest egg last until you’re 90. The ability to enjoy that 10yrs to its maximum potential and then a huge party at the end to celebrate your life. A funeral you can attend in spirit not just body.

    Actually, you may be on to something. I think that the government is quietly gaining control of New Zealand’s intelligence (?) and within a decade people will be discussing early euthanasia as a positive choice. From there, it will be just a matter of repeating the kindness and public duty mantras that have worked so well with the covid experiment, and New Zealand will have a permanently youthful population.

  I’m unsure what social media is. Is Kiwiblog social media? Is Muriel Newman’s site social media? It seems that the government has people scanning “social media” to see which way the wind is blowing. Well, in my opinion that’s a good thing. When I post on Kiwiblog I hope that my words will be influential in this small circle. If I influence the government in the beehive I’m pleased. They are very lucky to have my opinions to consider even though I don’t belong to the parties in power.

      ‘Lessons’ infer blame and incompetence. A competent person should have no need of lessons and should have been able to execute their role, anticipating unintended consequences (lessons).

That just sounds totally illiterate for the same reason ‘motorbike riding’ , or ‘airplane flying’ would. ‘Shined’ for shone. It just doesn’t sound right. I, and my colleagues present, was openly lied to this week by a quite senior manager of a Government department.

I know this person lied to us because, unbeknownst to this person, I am aware of the issue under discussion from both sides and the way the person presented it to us was a complete untruth.

The lie, I should add, was clearly geared to position them and their organisation in a good light amid present turmoil.

It has had me thinking since; is it appropriate that Government employees lie under any circumstances? Are some or certain lies acceptable? What is the culture that has made this employee think lying is acceptable?

And this is of course doubly concerning to me because this employee has alternatives to lying. If telling the truth would reflect badly on themselves or their organisation they could simply have said “I’m sorry, that’s not something I can/am prepared to discuss…” and the matter would have ended there.

But no, they chose to lie instead.

Interested in the thoughts and experiences of others.

  I have come across cases where someone high up made a wrong call because they had not been given all the details of a case.
  
  I also know of instances where a complainant has not been upfront with all the information pertaining to their situation.
  
  If you are still clear that the senior manager has lied, then he/she has contravened the Conduct Code NZ Public Servants are required to work under.

  Yes – there is no place for a government official to lie for reward. In the case of a governing body – a lie for return should be considered corruption and dismissal. When a parliamentarian lies , or when a governing body official lies, it should be a reason for a corruption dismissal or court action. Only with that sort of reponse can these lying individual have to be forced not to use this tool in their toolbox. Cindy has lied multiple times to get her ends – that, to me, is corruption on the highest level in NZ. the latest “over 1,000,00 Kiwis don’t have safe drinking water” is a brazen lie for effect – totally corrupt

  You call it lies, but they see it as adapting to the political realities.
  If you came up with some inconvenient facts or data they see you as the problem, not the data. That’s the culture.

    I have no problem with organisations collecting public comments and using them to provide insights for their clients. I’d imagine quite a few private companies would use this sort of service.
    Not much different from the dreaded ‘focus groups’, etc.
    Of course, it’s another good reason to remain anonymous on social media when discussing anything remotely controversial.

    Arrange an anonymous white van to show up in Kiev with one or two nuclear warheads of a design that doesn’t match any known designs (for deniability) for Zelensky to do with as he sees fit. I’d suggest zelensky explodes one in uninhabited Russian arctic (with warning) and then states there is another hidden in Moscow and St Petersburg.
    
    Alternatively 1-2000 air launched propane ramjet cruise missiles (very cheap and easy to design and build), and target Russian infrastructure.

    What many forget re the so called Cuban missile crisis is the US had them on the Soviet border in Turkey and while they withdrew theirs from Cuba , the over vaunted JFK also withdrew his from Turkey , in that sense then the Russians actually won that one .

      Kennedy was virtually alone in the US government in holding out against a full-scale military strike against Cuba. He was also aghast when he found out that the Jupiter missiles had been retained in Turkey despite his earlier orders. In the event, the later withdrawal of the Jupiters became a useful secret quid pro quo in ending the crisis.

  You’re not helping your case there at all. Since you invoke the Cuban missile crisis, the appropriate analogy is clearly that Putin is JFK concerned about defending his nation’s integrity, while Washington DC is Krushchev determined to expand his reach into a geographically unrelated area, for the purposes of having military capability right on JFK’s doorstep. It was as unacceptable for JFK in 1962 as it is unacceptable for Putin in 2022.
  
  Just as any rational assessment tells us that the only reason the Soviets wanted missiles in Cuba was for offensive purposes, so too that is the only reason the US wants its weapons in Ukraine, under the auspices of NATO.

    Further to this, Ukraine in the present day plays a very similar geopolitical role as Cuba did in the Cold War. Otherwise irrelevant, but strategically located, both Cuba and Ukraine came into play due to their proximity to an enemy (in Cuba’s case, the USSR’s enemy America, in Ukraine’s case, the US’s enemy Russia).
    
    Just as the Soviets were donkey-deep in the politics of Cuba and helped install an anti-American revolutionary communist regime (demonstrating that they were unconcerned about the sovereignty of the Cuban people), so too in the current times are the US donkey-deep in Ukrainian politics, staging a coup there in 2014 to install a favourable regime (similarly unconcerned about Ukrainian sovereignty).
    
    This is yet another instance of US hypocrisy and double-standards when it comes to their interest-based actions in the world.

This is my final comment on receiving emails from Wellington public servants that contain a mix of Maori and English language.

Last Wednesday I received an email asking me if I could submit a summary of progress on my project to be included in a “panui for the rōpū”. 🤡

I googled it. It means a “newsletter for the group”.

I replied “I’m sorry. I do not understand your request. Could you please ask your question again using either English or Chinese?”

Apparantly this was not well received as I received no reply.

I’m just over it.

    I have never visited this government department in Wellington. I just meet with them by zoom every couple of weeks. Their latest motivational slogan is “We apply te ao Maori in everything we do.” 😳 😳
    
    So no they are not pulling my leg. This is the reality of what has happened. It’s application at the RBNZ by Adrian Orr has been one, but probably not the predominant factor in causing people to leave.
    
    The worst affected will be scientists working in the state sector.

      G, you know a bit about me and my military background so will like this. At one stage the conference had to go into a closed session as it was about electing executives. The press were asked to leave. I noticed a tv camera so being a suspicious sort walked across to find it still switched on and recording audio. The cameraman rushed back 8n and ran out with it. Shades of a cup of tea and a forgotten recording device. I think the poor cameraman was worried about what I might have done to his camera, he was right!

Duncan Garner summed up this country perfectly. He questioned why there is so much change in every single area, was New Zealand really that stuffed that we have to completely turn everything upside down? Do people out there realise the massive upheaval going on? I fear we will suffer long term consequences because of this government’s dogged determination to plow ahead with untested and idiotic change for changes sake (often not even mentioned during the last election). We can already start to see the degradation in a number of different measures. Does National have the courage to get us back on track if they won next year? How long will it take to repair the damage this government has caused? In just 2 short years they have divided society like never before.

  The incoming Government could introduce an omnibus Bill which repeals all legislation introduced since the 2020 election. There would be complications in that but these could be overcome.
  
  New governments get a “honey moon allowance”. I think that is the New Zealand phrase. They have goodwill.
  
  There is no way that National can work through conventional processes to unravel this mess and to create something better. I HOPE that behind the scenes, Luxon has a plan.

At least 1 generation – 25 years.

I remember commenting to a teaching colleague in 2001 when NCEA was about to introduced that folks would realise in a few years it was a lousy qualification/assessment tool.

She replied (based on her years in the Education system) that nothing would be admitted for years and it would be at least 15 years before any change would occur (It’s been 20 years so far).

And for the way NZ teaches reading to new entrants, it has taken over 40 years for Governments to realise that the “whole Language” method is a bit of a dog.

Co-governance isn’t really an issue.

All Maori will be informed how they are going to be co-governed and exactly which Maori will co-govern for them on their behalf.

Maori will be informed of this via the likes of Rawiri Waititi MP and a cabal of ruling tribal Maori elites. And by Tane and Maui they WILL like it! (I’m sure there are effective measures for dealing with any dissenting devices who don’t accept or respect certain mana).

    The crisis of NZ Ports and their management and efficiency has left no choice but for the Big shippers to bypass NZ due delays ( Still is).
    The supply chain issue regarding shipping is a home grown monumental cock up.
    Read the report and NZ has only 13 Coastal vessels, Therein lies “supply chain” issues and throw in the issues of dysfunctional Boards and council controlled “ring ins” and you are left with only one result.

      Have no wish to contradict a Master Mariner but the efficiency or otherwise of the port is not the full story regarding delays to the supply chain. For years the lines have contemplated using Australia as the feeder to NZ due to its small volumes. The breakup of the Tasman Accord allowed cross traders to carry containers between Australia and NZ thus giving them extra new revenue. Over recent news there has been a huge move in takeovers by the likes of Maersk and .MSC. I find it quite funny that in the 60s and 70,s people grumbled about the power of the conventional lines but today not a peek about the virtual monopoly the likes of Maersk have. I put that down to the loss of shipping journalists and the fact that there are so few NZ seafarers today. Dont just put the blame on the ports I agree there are too many. That was due to local parochial attitudes in the 60s and 70s everyone wanted a container crane.

  He can’t commandeer foreign flagged ships. And there’re no NZ flagged ships to commandeer as apart from the Cook Strait ferries, now that the tankers are gone, there’re only 3 NZ flagged merchant vessels left – 2 cement carriers and one container ship.

  That has been known for donkey’s years. Remove Cabotage and the overseas lines can move cargo at rates no NZ domiciled line can approach, so NZ Shipping disappears.
  
  What we need is some tax incentives to get people to set up shipping cos in NZ. Not el cheepo types of ships but real value added like Reefer Ships or Specialist Ships such as Heavy Lift vessels and man them with NZers.

Just listened to an item on the BBC News discussing affects on Tea Plantations as a result of a rapid change to organic fertilisers.
The impact of a total immediate changeover was not fully understood or expected.
They expected a 20% loss in tea production but thought an increase in sales value would compensate.
When the market didn’t respond as expected, it resulted in a loss of income and profitability.

Enthusiasm instead of market research. No wonder they call rookies ‘green.’

I remember when

Was talking to a specialist who was wondering why they sat through Hospital meetings that planned for a pandemic.
Why, they asked, does what they planned and discussed seem to have been ignored during Covid.

While it is great to be able to watch Labour try to excavate their way out of the 3 Waters hole, isn’t this a subject that National should have been fronting.
Especially, when it was apparent that Councils were having increasing expertise recruitment and cost problems.

Continuing this socialist government’s drive to make the government the only authority figure and problem-solver (my emphasis where bolded):

“The Children’s Commissioner has called on the Government to step in after a spate of crimes allegedly committed by children as young as 7 over the school holidays.

“It needs to happen now because these young ones, I’m sure they’re hurting inside,” Judge Frances Eivers told the Herald on Sunday.

“They’re just babies, they’re just young kids.”

At least 45 children or teenagers have allegedly been behind eight crimes such as break-ins and ram raids reported over the school holidays.

Twenty-three people are either facing charges in the District Court or Youth Court, or referred to Youth Aid – with the other half still on the run.

The holidays started with two teenage boys being seriously assaulted during a party at a Remuera home on the Thursday before Easter and it ended yesterday with a group of youths ram-raiding an Icebreaker clothing store near Auckland Airport.”

The Children’s Commissioner mentions nothing about parental responsibility, instead blaming it on Covid-19 and “rangatahi not being at school, or kids being at a loose end.” So, nothing’s anybody’s fault, and only the government can step in and fix it. Got it.

  We have folks who are being paid big $$$$$ to ensure that children are attending school or getting a regular education.

Black with a Vengeance

Randomly got up this morning and wandered outside to be confronted by an amazingly bright planetary alignment.

Jupiter, Venus, Mars and Saturn with Neptune lurking invisibly but fairly much in a straight line.

God, it was impressive!!! Kind of puts our petty universal human condition into perspective…

  “God” it was impressive? Indeed. To the atheist its just a perspectival phenomenon involving the relative positions of several agglomerations of matter, of zero intrinsic meaning and merely a result of random physical interactions. Sure, mathematical science can describe it, but it cannot approach an account of the feeling such a sight engenders in most of us. The fact that you commented on its beauty really actually goes to the heart of what you call the “petty” human condition, in terms of the aesthetic value we recognise in our surroundings. I’d imagine if you weren’t a human with an immaterial essence, it would have had little (or much less) effect on you.

    My partner suggested I take his mother to Tindall’s over the weekend while he went back to stock up the maimai for next weekend.
    Honestly, she’s the only woman I know that insists on Bloody-Mary’s for breakfast. And I’m doing the 11 – 7 tonite. No rest for the wicked she reckons 🙁
