What a fiasco with Wellington’s public transport yesterday. Seems someone forgot to ‘tell’ the Metlink web site, real time departure boards and aps, etc that a Sunday timetable applied on Wellington Anniversary Day. The issue was presumably discovered early in the Day and all that could be done was to switch off the ‘real time’ systems and tell people to look at the Sunday timetable.
If the Regional Council want people to use public transport to ease congestion, slow Climate Change etc the best place to start is to ensure notification systems work properly. Hopefully there will be some painful interviews without coffee at WRC this morning.

  Quietly completed its second reading….
  
  The Covid 19 Public Health Response (Vaccinations) Order 2021 comes into effect on April 1st.
  
  This legislation will allow for:
  
  1. The lockdown of unvaccinated or insufficiently vaccinated individuals.
  2. The ability to restrict travel within the country to unvaccinated or insufficiently vaccinated (e.g. a person who does not want to get a booster shot).
  3. Withhold certification from those who do not get required boosters or subsequent combinations of vaccines as may be ordered at any time.
  4. The ability to dictate the type and form of certification required for proof of vaccination status — digital or otherwise.
  5. The ability to dictate what other information may be required for the renewal of vaccine certificates, and which information may be contained on such a certificate.
  6. The period for which a vaccine certificate is valid can be changed at any time, and who it is that may be entitled or eligible to have these certificates.
  7. The specification of mandates for entire job sectors.
  8. The ordering of certain jobs to require regular mandatory testing and medical examination.
  9. Enforcement officers to be able to demand certification, pretty much at any time.
  10. The appointment of enforcement officers that can be anybody they wish to appoint, and not necessarily police.
  11. Enforcement officers to inspect and take copies of certification to be verified at a later date, before immediately returning such documentation.
  12. The provision of an assessment tool for employers to use to determine who should be vaccine mandated, however employers can totally disregard the assessment tool and mandate at whim.
  13. Legal or other representatives of employees may be refused entry to workplaces.
  14. Contact tracing information may be used against a person in order to enforce the Act.
  15. Employees who have been dismissed for non-compliance of testing or vaccination, but comply at the last minute, may still be dismissed if the employer deems revoking the dismissal to be disruptive of their business.

Really good reporting on a large scale study of the effectiveness of natural immunity vs vaccines in protecting hospitalizations and deaths. This was on Delta.

Conclusion is that natural immunity is highly effective. You may get reinfected but may be asymptomatic or very mild symptoms

Conclusion is that the UK policy of pressuring people who have had COVID to get a booster shot is totally ineffective.

Watch it at lunchtime if you have 15 minutes. It is not as long as indicated. The last 8 minutes is about a different topic.

  If someone in your household gets sick, only that person has to stay at home, other members of the household can carry on as per normal, and they’re pretty much given up on making people wear masks.

  Auckland College sports 2023 is off for all non-passported participants. I can’t fathom the level of irrationality with this. Students with highly transmissible diseases such as Hepatitis can play full contact sports protected by medical confidentiality. Meanwhile students with no illness cannot play.

If they were why are people wanting to compare New Zealand with Australia – our borders have been closed from just before Adam became a Cowbo so obviously not a direct comparison.

    A minor point: NZ citizens didn’t have to be vaccinated until mid January when AirNZ bought in this requirement. Only a negative test was required.
    
    I believe one of the Eastern airlines still accepts unvaccinated people.

  I’m “Stranded in ‘Straya” at the moment, maybe I should do a blog….
  We flew over to Melbourne on 17 December based on Dr. **** and the Elected Mayhem saying that kiwis in Oz could fly back into NZ after 17 Jan, we had a return trip booked on 23 Jan.
  Obviously we knew this was a risk as we know you can’t trust this band of Muppets but we took the risk knowing we could work from home in Oz if things changed, and it was our chance to have Christmas with family we haven’t seen for some time, and may not again in some cases.
  Border was open, with these conditions:
  Pre departure negative PCR test,
  Australia Travel certificate to enter Oz,
  Victoria travel permit to enter Vic,
  PCR within 24 hours of arrival and 3 days home detention,
  PCR test on day 5 – 7,
  Carry all documentation at all times for 15 days.
  
  Interestingly, all of our paperwork was scrutinised by Air NZ before departure, and on arrival nobody at border control needed to see them, so obviously the airlines are an integral part of the process.
  
  We arrived and got the first PCR test, which was free at the local testing station and the queue was only 20 minutes. Negative result arrived about 3am next day. So got out of Home D Monday night and hit the shops Tuesday morning. Masks required in retail businesses and supposed to do the local QR code, wasn’t strictly enforced.
  
  Later we got an email from Air NZ saying someone on our flight had tested positive so we had to go for another PCR and Home D until negative results received. Same testing drill and once again results overnight.
  Then Dr. TATEM announced Omicron was scary and the NZ border was not re-opening on 17 Jan.
  
  Received an email from Air NZ notifying that our flight on 23 Jan had been cancelled due to Omicron border changes.
  But, Air NZ had been working with MOH/MIQ/etc. and we were eligible for an MIQ slot if we emailed an address and let them know we wanted one.
  Emailed MIQ and re-booked a later flight and within no time at all were booked into MIQ on arrival on Friday 28 Jan.
  Isn’t it amazing what can be achieved when the government goes on extended holiday and leaves the professionals to get on with sorting things out!
  
  So hopefully not jinxing things, as long as we have a proper ($180 each) negative PCR test and certificate we’re flying home to MIQ somewhere in NZ this coming Friday.
  Just to make things complicated though, the departure PCR test now has to be within 48 hours of departure, down from 72 hours, meaning we have to get tested Wednesday afternoon.
  Wednesday is Australia Day, and not many of the travel PCR collection centres are open on that public holiday, and their website recommends getting tested at least 48 hours before departure due to high volumes of testing currently. So a couple of days of nail biting until we get the results back in time to go to the airport. If they come back positive we’re stuffed.
  Then 2 weeks ago daughter we are staying with got sick, did a Rapid Antigent Test and was positive with Covid, so 4 of us staying in the house are on Home D for a week until she recovers. So another round of PCR testing, negative again.
  Staying locked up for a week and on the last day the rest of us went for the day 6 PCR and son-in-law has started coughing and tests positive, and we’re locked in for another week.
  He’s out of isolation today.
  Departure tests are tomorrow, so fingers crossed we’ll be in MIQ on Friday night, which will be another new experience.

The country know as New Zealand is officially dead (or at best of life support). Gone is the can-do; no problem is surmountable; how do we do this attitude evidenced by No8 wire, Climbing Everest or splitting the atom.

This has been replaced by a meek can’t-do attitude where Health and Safety compliance nut jobs dutifully take a literal and hardline interpretation of government dictates with a stark similarity with Sharia Law in places such as Saudi Arabia. Anyone that dares to be different or oppose this group think is labeled an extremist, antivaxxer, Qnon Trump-loving freak show down to woke plod monitoring you on a day-to-day basis.

Call it whatever you want Aotearoa, New Zimbabwe, South North Korea or anything else. It isn’t the country that I grew up in or I want to be in. Unfortunately I’m stuck here (can’t move a family if they don’t want to) living in a perpetual nightmare where 35% actively enjoy this dystopian world.

  Her first term was kept reasonably Democratic but that was largely due to the Peters Party veto on her more radical dictates.
  Her second term was bought about by public apathy and a well-oiled team of Socialism Enablers which included our Universities, MSM and Maori Separatist Radicals with a Socialism agenda of their own.

Will the media ever call out Jacinda for the world of pain households are facing?

Super high inflation and rising interest rates primarily fall at the feet of her policies and/or her Govt could have done something about it.

Large proportion of inflation is labour costs, food costs and building costs. Labour costs are skyrocketing because of her failed immigration policies and permanent border closures. Food costs going up because of lack of seasonal workers. Building costs going up due to lack of local manufacturing capacity (including labour) and international supply chain which the Govt can strongly influence.

Then interest rates which are effectively being used as a dumb hammer to try and curb inflation caused by her Govt.

Jacinda has created all this mess and the households will feel the pain.

It’s been suggested that 10% plus salary increases are needed to just make households even and there is no way businesses already struggling could afford even half of that, let alone wages go up so businesses will put their prices up and then you have more inflation

I feel sorry for the businesses being named and shamed in that idiotic ‘places of interest’ listing that the government persists with using. Appearing on that list, especially food and accomodation could spell the death knell for these places who are already struggling.

I feel the contact tracing etc is going to be pointless fairly soon with omicron. Bring it on. In the circles I mix in people, young and old, are fairly over all these OTT regulations. They’ve stopped wearing masks all the time and refuse to curb meet ups with friends and family.

Was sad to see one of my regular cafes having to clear out half their tables in their establishment. To what end? Of course Ardern and Bloomfield will carry on with their control freak regime.

I was mulling over our great white saviour Cindy’s sympathy pitch, where she is postponing her opulent wedding, because she is unwilling to have less than 100 guests. Socialists have made a great song and dance about this supposed “sacrifice”.

Let’s analyse what she said:

“I am no different to, dare I say it, thousands of other New Zealanders who have had much more devastating impacts felt by the pandemic, the most gutting of which is the inability to be with a loved one sometimes when they are gravely ill. That will far, far outstrip any sadness I experience.”

““I am no different to…” Wrong. She is in a very, very different situation to those that missed family members dying, due to her insane policies. Her quote, in these circumstances, is simply degenerate.

Cindy’s comparison of her wedding postponement to these people she has tortured is simply an outrage.

It is a staggering piece of narcissism.

  A family friend just changed her wedding plans with the word ‘devasted’ used in comparison. But the couple want to be married as the top priority, which is the point of the wedding for them, so they will have a small ceremony instead and a big party later.

The covid response from all parties has been that no restriction, no civil liberty, or cost is too high to save us from death by covid.

But with Breast Cancer we only offer screening to women up to 70 years old. (in Australia it is 75) despite the USA recommending that all women should be scanned every 2 years. This decision costs hundreds of lives every year. Our governments with socialised medical care have made calculated cost benefit analysis that women’s lives over 70 aren’t worth it and they won’t fund or advertise for women over this age to get tested despite an increasing number of women over this age group dying of breast cancer.

The academic analysis of this decision not to screen includes:
“The potential harms of breast cancer screening in older women include false positive results and overdiagnosis. Among women 75 years and older, …will experience a false-alarm,… which can cause pain, anxiety, and distress. False positive mammogram results decrease with age. Overdiagnosis, a phenomenon in which a cancer detected by screening would not have gone on to cause symptoms or death, is a harm of screening that increases with age.”

Yet for covid the PCR delivers regular false positive to those who would not have gone on to cause symptoms we don’t stop screening because it might cause panic and anxiety or overdiagnosis – in fact we use our health budgets to fund media fuelled panic and propaganda.

Breast Cancer:
“The existence of comorbid conditions has been used as rationale to exclude women over 69 years in breast cancer screening invitations.”

Yet with covid we are told to ignore co-morbidities that every life is sacred and they may have not died if they hadn’t got the virus.

With breast cancer they make hard decisions to save money on those they deem who have other co-morbidities and higher risk.

Breast Cancer;
“Studies show that breast cancer screening does not benefit older women with severe or multiple comorbidities, due to competing causes of mortality. Although women with a life expectancy of less than 10 years are unlikely to experience a mortality reduction from screening mammography,”

Women die every year because of these hard cost based policy decisions based on age.

We spent 69 billion on “Covid” but what else could that money have been spent on. A covidiversion topic – the bloody trees / climate thing –

In what I consider to be an excellent article – in just my opinion, of course – Dame Anne Salmond indicates several factors that fault New Zealand’s climate planting plans, and particularly James Shaw’s Glasgow proclamation –

And … Since most of the plantations in New Zealand are owned offshore, we’re paying even more to people in other countries to sequester the carbon we’re emitting.

– however I, respectfully, would suggest that – good as I believe this article to be – it misses one major point: the article does not come back to the fundamental fact that the ‘off-setting’ – of planting trees to sequester carbon, either at home or abroad – allows the emissions in New Zealand, which demand those off-sets, to carry on unabated.

The whole “off-set” scheme “kicks the can down the road”, as I and many others have continually damned as a characteristic feature of this Government (hundreds of consultive working groups to current announcements of announcements, with another tomorrow) and this time Shaw even “kicks the can into someone else’s back yard”, paying other countries to plant trees while we continue with our emissions here.

It is like modern medicine where a GP gives you medication to relieve or even eliminate symptoms, but never actually addresses the cause of your woes.

Dame Anne Salmond writes about the medications prescribed to offset the side effects of the medications given to offset symptoms without solving the actual cause –
a laxative to counter the constipation codeine causes without finding the cause of the pain that you are given codeine to releave –
like, that this Ardern Government is a pain in the arse.

  If planting trees abroad is a more cost-effective way to reduce net global carbon emissions than stopping carbon emissions from New Zealand itself, then it absolutely should be allowed to carry on unabated.
  
  There is no environmental benefit whatsoever in reducing net carbon emissions expensively in one place, rather than reducing them cheaply in another place.

  LOL, I was thinking about Liebours 1 Billion trees project and did some numbers.
  There were roughly 3.04 Trillion trees in the world as at the 2015 estimate. Since then a number of countries have had tree planting programs, the most ambitious I’ve found is China who have planted 66 billion trees in an on going project to push back desertification. So about 3.106 or more trees in the world.
  Liebours failed 1 Billion trees would have added a massive 0.032% to the world tree count, or 0.003% per year. Hardly a significant contributor to the greening of the earth, and even then they couldn’t get it right.

  This morning I tuned into NewstalkZB for the first time in a long time to listen to the 9am news. I know it was 9am as I checked the time. Just before the news in the slew of ads they had one ad extolling the planting of wood. Saying how great it was for the country and that revenues from selling it would even outstrip those due to pastureland. They were touting it as the next big thing, wood pellets etc, great for the climate, wood was the new gold.
  
  Well, I’ve just been to the Newstalk Week In Demand and replayed that time slot and it has totally disappeared. Weird huh? And the ad didn’t say who was doing the advertising or anything. I had to laugh because in the news report following they were reporting record profits for Fonterra for milk powder sales.

Isn’t it remarkable that we are starting the year with exactly the same problem that we had last year, and the year before, which is that we are not ready for an outbreak.

I’m not angry. You’re not going to hear me raging about this.

But I am going to lay it out for you so you also understand how unprepared the government is for these omicron cases.

Let’s start with ICU: not ready.

According to that leaked report last week from the upper levels of government, we had 108 ICU beds spare.

That’s 36% of capacity. It’s not nearly enough if we get the 10s of thousands of daily cases Chris Hipkins is predicting

I’ll just remind you that last year we harped on at the government about needing to let doctors and nurses through MIQ, and do everything necessary to stop us losing the ones we had and they dragged their heels. So don’t be surprised by this.

Then we have the medication situation.

We still don’t have the two treatments in this country that should help keep you out of hospital if you take them early enough in the infection.

Paxlovid and Molnupiravir.

They’ve been approved in Australia, the UK, and the US, but we’re still waiting on Medsafe to give the medication their approval for NZ, and current projections are that that won’t be until April.

When we might be past the peak of this outbreak already.

Then there are the rapid antigen tests. We have 4.6 million tests in this country, not even enough for one for each of us.

That’s because when businesses were trying to buy them, they were banned by the government until late last year.

And now the government is scrambling to buy them… but there’s a worldwide shortage.

And finally, you’re being told already that you might have to look after yourself at home, stock up on paracetamol and necessities and not even get tested if you get omicron.

That’s because the government is already acknowledging there’s a very good chance the testing system will collapse under demand at the height of the outbreak.

Even for Ja$inda, mandatory vaccination of five to eleven year olds os (at the moment) a step too far.

Not so long ago she was saying ‘We don’t do that’ , (about vaxxing kids) now the clip has been altered to say ‘experts advise us’ to do it.

The recent annaouncement made much of her view that ‘Boosters’ were necessary to combat Omicron.

Why? the evidence indicates the last round of vaxes aren’t any use for Omicron, and it’s a bit like a head cold.

So why has Ja$inda got such a hard-on for getting as many vaccinations done as possible, even in the face of facts such as:

vaxxed people end up in hospital,
the average age of a covid death is 82
there’s been a boom in adverse side effects amongst young and otherwise hearlthy recipients of the vax?

The recent report from teh UK revised its data of covid deaths from 176.000 to 17,000 (average age 82) i.e. a common or garden flu harvestin any given years.

The CDC shows similar ‘average’ flu-deaths for teh past 6 years?

Even as other nations with (apparently lower) rates of vaccinations she has claimed credit for, are now backing off the whole mandatory clown-show?

Why is is so difficult to access elected representative/public servant, Ja$inda Ardern’s financial records?

Why did Hipkins refuse to release contracts between Her majesty’s Government and the pharmaceutical companies as too ‘commercially sensitive’?

Why are the media, who get so much money form ‘public support journalism funds’ and wall-to-wall advertising, and who are owned by companies with direct financial links to the paharmaceutical industries so loath to engage in any counter narratives?

And finally, why are even Opposition Parties such craven toadies? More than happy to go with the vaxx/covid narrative, rather than interrogate or challenge the Government?

Is political corruption the actual virus here?

  For myself I could ride it out by not going out of the house if I thought I was infected, because I’m retired.
  However I’d still prefer confirmation if a month later I picked up a cold. Maybe the first time was a cold & the second covid?
  If I was a working person do I ignore the symptoms, not get tested and risk spreading it around by going into the office?
  Some would say the people in the office will get infected sooner or later anyway.
  Maybe, but I don’t think it would be my place to determine what happens to someone else.

    if you think you are infectious, do what most of us have done our whole working life – work from home.
    I guess if you are used to attending work with flu this might be a big change for you, but most of us just use some common sense. Good chance you won’t even know you’ve got it anyway (unless you are double but not triple jabbed – they seem to get hospitalised most often).

      I remember getting the flu maybe once in my life and I was in no shape to work anywhere.
      Apart from that in my line of work working from home wasn’t practical.
      Some guys weren’t so lucky and some used up the paltry five days standard sick leave. Many places I worked they were told just to stay home and they’d be paid.
      Over in Bangkok it was thirty days sick leave. Problem was guys would take a day off for the flimsiest of reasons. Headache was quite common.

I was considering why it is so difficult to have a discussion with socialists about Covid.

CAKE approaches problems in a rational, considered and fact-based manner. Socialists don’t do logic. It is all about the feelz.

Take the issue, say, of cloth masks. The science is almost unanimous on this subject. They don’t work. However, socialists don’t actually care about whether they actually work or not, in the scientific sense. For them, masks are important as a tool of virtue signalling, and for exhibiting control and power.

The current restrictions are completely pointless from a health perspective, and very damaging to our hospitality economy. Why bother?

Socialism is like an ancient mythology. Perhaps the nonsensical rules serve in some placebo effect, to their unsophisticated followers. More importantly, they are an ideological programme, intended to show the power and glory of the State. When the Aztecs sacrificed humans to the Sun God, they were probably drawing on the same part of the human psyche as the socialists and their feelz policies.

Cindy might not directly rip the beating heart out of your body, like the Aztec leaders, but her policies come from the same place. There is a mythology at play here, which won’t be contradicted by pesky facts.

There is nowhere for the dissenter to go, except up the ramp to the top of the pyramid, where a leering Cindy awaits, holy dagger in hand…

  CAKE FACE1, IIRC, at the start of the pandemic the advice was against wearing masks, then it changed to support wearing them, on the basis that there seemed to be less Covid spreading where they were worn.
  I know a lot of people have pointed out that the virus spores (is that the right name for them?) are smaller than the holes in the masks. I figure it is like putting your hand in front of your mouth with your fingers outspread and standing in front of a spray of water – your fingers won’t keep it all out of your mouth, but will block some of it. Put two hands in front of your mouth at right angles to each other and you will block even more water from getting in. In other words, it may not be perfect, but it does have some effect.
  
  I haven’t seen any later scientific results on the standard masks – do you have any links?

        Exhaled droplets are not the issue. They do not float around for long. Exhaled droplets fall quickly due to gravity. It is the miniscule aerosolized virus particles that float and hang around for other people to inhale that cause viral transmission. The masks do not stop them leaving ones mouth or stop them being breathed in.

2016 Education Counts data shows that Tongan was offered as a subject in only 18 mainstream schools in all of Aotearoa, which allowed only 1700 primary school students and fewer than 600 secondary school students to enrol across the country.

The issue is similarly stark for other Pacific languages, with only 15 mainstream schools offering Cook Islands Māori, and even fewer offering Niuean, Tokelauan, or Fijian (no information was reported for Rotuman, Kiribati, or Tuvaluan).

Even Samoan, which is the third most spoken language in Aotearoa, with more than 80,000 speakers, is available to fewer than 4000 students in just 80 mainstream schools.

      Yep. I notice the article only discusses one side of the equation; namely, how many schools offer the various Pacific languages as subjects. I don’t see any statistics quoted as to how much demand there is to be taught the languages.
      
      I’d also comment that, based purely on my own limited experience, Pacific Islanders seem to be far more invested in maintaining their own languages than Maori are.

  Samoan and I expect Tongan is much further advanced as a language than Maori.
  Samoan is not fossilised but a working language. However there are at least 3 variants. A reserved Chiefly language, the standard Samoan and the street common Samoan. For commerce and education the population are fluent in English and are all essentially bi-lingual. Land titles etc are all dealt with in the reserved language.

An interesting story on Stuff about using pooling to maximise PCR testing.

What they do is combine a clump of samples and test the clump. If it is negative they they have saved a lot of time and reagents compared with testing every sample individually. And it increases the number of samples that can be dealt with each day.

But the method breaks down in an Omicron wave. So many samples are positive it isn’t likely any clumps will be negative. So everything gets tested individually and the number of samples that can be processed daily drops.

A “narrative”??!!! That’s taxpayers money they’re doling out there, they’d better be keeping a ledger. Accounting for Government spending is not a bedtime reading of Goldilocks or Jack and the Beanstalk.

“While Kāinga Ora declined the OIA request on the basis it did not centrally record the information, its response does note “amounts awarded overall are small, commensurate with the Tribunal’s findings of matters needing compensation”.

National Party deputy leader and housing spokesperson Nicola Willis said the government housing agency could not have it both ways.

“Either they know, in which case they should front up and be transparent with taxpayers about how much they’ve spent, or they don’t know and they’re in no position to make those assurances.

“Either way, it’s disappointing. I would suggest Kāinga Ora be honest, up front and accountable on this issue.”

It appears household members are close contacts. So if they are held an extra 10 days to clear them of any inoculation from the first infected person, is that first person not a close contact as the rest of the family, and surely should continue to isolate with them for the extra 10 days?

1 – does natural immunisation kick in immediately or have a lapse for a few days as does apparently a second injection or booster before it gains fuller efficacy?
2 – is a close-contact of any sort able to infect the highly contagious omicron virus by physical touch regardless of their own health status?
3 – will Ardern address either of these questions in any public statement?

We lack useful bus feeder services. I am disabled and my nearest suburban bus service is one km away … uphill!

Until another level of smaller feeder vehicles servicing our secondary routes is in place I will continue to depend on a car … OK?

  However most buses I see (outside of peak) are next to empty. Possibly for similar reasons to those you mention.
  
  You rely on your car as much as you want. Most people do, because public transport isn’t working.

These top down rules from the govt are just stupid. I’m the only person in my office and we can all socially distance in lunch breaks when we can’t wear masks anyway. To be honest, I have been using the same blue and white “freebie” paper mask for the last 2 years. Never had a problem. I even washed it once, just to see how it lasted.

    As you say, surgical masks (ie. the blue and white pleated things) are as pointless as scarves or bandannas. They serve SFA against aerosols and only work for large drops etc (eg. someone sneezing straight in your face).
    
    What they actually said is N95 or P2 masks. P2 are way better than surgical masks but not up there with N95s.
    
    P2 masks do, however, look a bit more like N95s so they look “serious” and the theatre is preserved.

      P2 masks are interchangeable with N95. In the words of 3M who makes the most commonly used masks in healthcare and industry:
