A “3 Waters” headline –
Three Waters reforms would improve some councils’ finances, analysis shows
and the first sentence is –
The three waters reforms would achieve balance sheet separation and improve some councils’ finances, according to analysis that paves the way for the legislation. [1]

Is this oxymoronic or just mental dissonance (or propaganda non-sense)? – that a council can benefit from a balance sheet that is separated from the council?

The only thing that will happen is some debt will disappear along with associated interest expense, but way more assets, along with their income producing ability. S&P rate companies not just on the fucking balance sheet, but on their ability to generate income. In this case, we have a bunch of clowns that can COERCE revenue from people. Things would have to be pretty shit for S&P to trash their ratings. Just think, if the council hadnt spent beyond their means?

  From an accounting perspective, if the value of the assets is less than the value of the liabilities secured against those assets then yes, the Council’s net asset position (i.e. the Balance Sheet) would be improved by the removal of both.
  
  Not sure whether this is true for any Council, however.

  I read Archibald Baxter’s book We Will Not Cease about his harrowing experiences as a conscientious objector during WWI. Those guys didn’t get more sympathy from some of the soldiers detailed to guard them than the general public, as I recall.
  Peter Fraser was jailed for refusing to be conscripted in WWI and was PM of the government that brought in conscription in WWII.

        In 1940 and 1941 Fraser found dealing with conscientious objectors and Christian pacifists like Reverence Ormond Burton distressing…He and his close associate, A.C. Barrington, had come to be regarded as the country’s most consistent and principled opponents of war. Fraser acknowledged as much…according to the historian David Grant, Fraser stood surety for all three when they were released on bail.
        Fraser talked with Burton and his associates, who also entered into lengthy correspondence with ministers. The Prime Minister and his colleagues were always polite but firm in their replies, arguing the case point by point and seldom giving an inch. Several Christian pacifists were detained for significant periods of time during the war, and in February 1942 the Methodist Church, which supported the war, dismissed Burton from the ministry.
        
        I note, Maggy, that you were unable to provide anything to back your very strange contention that Fraser acted against Burton because he ‘couldn’t stomach the fact that Burton had won a MM and the French Médaille d’honneur, and been wounded 3 x in WW1’.

        There was No need to imprison Burton five times…..

      cmm in my mind they basically volunteered to be unarmed assistants in the line of fire. Brave but doesn’t make a great deal of sense to me. Very different to someone who refuses to assist those forced to sacrifice life and limb in a major war.
      
      There should be no conscription unless those proposing it genuinely lead by example (IE first genuinely put themselves in the line of fire exactly as they expect conscripts to).

Big day tomorrow. Emissions Reduction Plan. The thing with climate change is everyone wants to fix it so long as someone else pays for it. This is illustrated by the reaction to high petrol prices. Such prices should be great for discouraging car use. All those climate change champions should celebrate. 😀 Oops they didn’t.

So tomorrow expect billions of dollars of expenditure in a futile effort to reduce emissions without pain. It will be largely ineffective.

  Yesterday we caught the Onehunga train into town. Not because it’s free, but parking is expensive and the road system down there is confusing if you’re not used to it. As usual the train sped passed the traffic on the southern motorway.

    What’s your point? Because it seems to be that the Government’s approach – making car driving more difficult and expensive in order to encourage people onto public transport – is working effectively, and that public transport is a faster way to travel anyway.

      Auckland may or may not be one of the world’s least densely populated cities. Either way the train service is pretty thin.
      We only ever use the Onehunga line for the reasons I mentioned above and I noticed that a number of stations are located in industrial areas. Not very convenient for commuters.

    “Cash for clunkers” which will be gamed by the wealthy urban folk
    Progressively higher taxes on high emitting cars.
    Ban on importing petrol powdered cars in 2030
    Ban on registering petrol powered vehicles in 2040
    Withdrawing units from the ETS to make some industrial processes unprofitable.
    Banning all new gas connections to industrial and domestic premises by 2025
    Phase out all use of LPG by 2030.

      You’ve made it clear Benedict that your preferred option would be to tighten the ETS so that the cost of emitting carbon goes up, thus providing an economic rather than a regulatory incentive to shift activity away from carbon-intensive processes and products
      
      What is the actual difference in practice? Which of the possible regulatory actions you’ve listed, do you think will bring about carbon reductions that wouldn’t have happened as a result of a strengthened ETS? What carbon-reducing activity might happen under an ETS, that won’t happen as a result of the Government’s more regulation-based approach?
      
      You see, I do strongly agree with you that a properly functioning ETS should deliver more carbon reduction at the same price, or the same carbon reduction at a lower price, compared to a regulatory approach. But if that case is to stand any chance of being generally understood, it must be demonstrated with actual, practical examples of real people, real businesses, taking real action and making real reductions in carbon-intensive activity in response to the economic signal provided by the ETS. Without powerful narratives along these lines it’s just not going to fly.

        There are big differences. The ETS WILL deliver our current international commitments for reductions by 2030. The net zero by 2050 is pie in the sky.
        
        What we do no is that many of these regulatory interventions are hideously expensive compared to current carbon prices.
        
        Let the ETS do its job without stuffing it up with stupidity like EV subsidies. Otherwise why the hell have it? The government panicked over petrol prices. But the reality is that $4 petrol will cause people to switch to more fuel efficient cars. They don’t want to use markets. They just want to bribe people with their own money. Most useless government in the OECD.

There must be many ‘ legal eagles’ who read this blog.
This issue, is in my opinion politically charged, feeding directly into issues of He Puapua/ Maori governance etc etc.
Can we expect National to address this issue…or will they remain hiding under the bed. It NEEDS wide dissemination and thorough sunlight.Wd should rally to the cause….ie truth!

That the Law Society has ignored said report is absolutely unsurprising. They are an old boys and girls club of which the heads of bench are honorary members.   I am one of those legal eagles mentioned by Souvlaki. I am a bit disturbed to see the NZLS filed the rule of law committee report (which I didnt know about as it has not been mentioned in LS publications ) in the too hard and thus something to be ignored basket.
  Mind you given the last president was worse than useless in my humble opinion I shouldn’t really be surprised.
  I had hopes for Jacque Lethbridge as president but when she apologised for some random music in the background of something she was doing I lost all hope.

  I agree that’s a pretty poor salute and if a private I was in charge of saluted like that he would have been corrected.
  
  But that’s not the point here is it?
  
  The main thing to focus on is that the old boy’s heart is in the right place and he wants to acknowledge the military and object to how they had been treated.
  
  Unfortunately for him that place is not were Cindy and her mates want his heart to be.
  
  Even the person who is critiquing the uniform is over stretching things. It is very common for old soldiers to wear mismatching uniform pieces. Few of us could fit in the pants we would have worn during our military service.
  
  The media have spun this well: attacking all the petty little things of no consequence instead of focusing on the big one: what was the old boy really trying to say?

  And for crying out loud NZ Herald, it was pretty clear he was wearing an old WW1 style (tunic) uniform and if the Herald expected him to be the rightful owner then that would make him around 130 years old or so, born in the 1890’s!

  He was only being “patriotic”, and he was simply supporting a protest convey before all the Parliament protester controversies happened! No one knew what was in store for Parliament in the forthcoming days and week, including the gentleman!
  
  The real story here is Speaker Mallard, who’s previous life as a Parliamentary protester himself enshrined the right to protest at Parliament.
  
  The hypocrisy is out of this world!
  
  Especially when he had the Police go hard against the protesters early on, bringing scenes of thuggery and violence not seen in NZ since 1977 (Sleeping Dogs film predicting a dark NZ) and 1981 (Springbok Tour).
  
  This is astounding!
  
  So who gave the parliamentary approval to allow Police to open fire on protesters (shoot to wound)?
  
  This is where the real story lies. This is new NZ history in the making.
  
  All brought on by Mallard himself (left free rein by an absent Prime Minister).
  
  Whomever investigates this will be remembered as one of NZ’s greatest journalists by the profession and the citizens!

After listening to all the evil aggressive race-baiting of NZ Labour Party minister Willie Jackson lately, out of interest I looked up an old tv show he guested on: The DNA Detectives. Sure enough there was the grifter Willie baring it all, tempted by the self-promotion and free travel around the world to reconnect with his roots. Willie was cool at the start of the show, but less so when the numbers were exposed.

Willie was not happy that he’s only 20% Maori! Oh dear…and trivial compared to his dominant 33% East Asian bloodline, and embarrassingly close to his inconvenient 18% European ancestry! Poor Willie!

All that racist bile from Mr 20%

Willie was sulky on the programme about the exposure of his diluted weak Maori pedigree, but he is now evidently in his angry phase. But this is his “problem” so why should we all have to suffer his toxic aggressive outbursts and ugly pure racism? Go get some anger management help Willie, for your own and everybody’s sake.

    Because many urban Maori don’t have a traditional Maori upbringing (and don’t connect to their Marae or whakapapa). Throw in gangs too.
    
    So following Willie’s logic does that mean the “true” Maori population is only around say 3-5% (not 15-16%)?
    
    (Mind you if Willie were to truly believe that, which of course he wouldn’t, the advantages for him would be fewer people to share any redistributed spoils with, so perhaps he may be tempted to follow that logic in time)?!!

Ardern needs to lift that pre departure test requirement immediately if she really cares about the NZ people and their livelihoods and in particular the tourism industry. It’s just a total handbrake on NZ moving forwards. She’s still enacting her elimination goal by imposing this regulation.

Instead of pre departure test why not insist visitors have proper travel insurance to cover if they get covid? As long as tourists aren’t burdening our health system I don’t care if they come here. I just don’t want to pay for any health care needs they may require when here.

Very few in NSW are wearing masks these days. I’d say around 5%. The media over there doesn’t report all the myopic covid numbers that $tuffed and The Ferald continue to report on a daily basis.

Hope Ardern’s poll ratings are sinking the longer she imposes this pre departure test rule on NZers wanting to enter NZ.

  The whole covid testing thing is a joke. Many, if not most, people could get a positive RAT and just throw it in the bin and carry on with life because their symptoms are so mild they and anyone they come into contact with wouldn’t even know. The only people reporting RATs now are people on wages looking for a week off with full pay. It’s such a dead horse issue it should all be dropped with not another cent spent in it. Even Michael Baker is now admitting it is less deadly than the flu. It’s time just to give the whole thing up and move on.

Maybe they should levy visitors coming in with a health levy, to cover these eventualities. After extensive research it can be revealed –
A committee of 10 may have been needed to order the two big zero signs that cost just under $5,000 each.

3 – speed limits – stupid clipboard man attempts to hold a conversation with two rude brats on the other side of the road when the whole exercise is to depict the road as being too busy to hear anything across it, while the traffic is aligned with what the clip-board man says and is apparently under his psychic-control anyway.

4 – a car with four sing-along occupants, hits a barrier, and also empties four road workers, and two police officers as extra passengers, and two women car inspectors illegally travelling in the engine compartment – the overwhelmingly over-loaded car having crashed after the driver swerves to avoid a possum, when New Zealand is working towards being bloody pest-free by 2050.

and 5 – a toll booth situation that seems simpler than Hone Harawira’s Northland road blocks, but the ex-Shortland Street actress gate-keeper says “Only the little one today”, and then the ad shows the little girl still playing with her father among some boulders.

  18 months after we started driving regularly between Auckland and Russell we still pass through the same 3 roadworks. Northern motorway, Dome valley and just South of Whangarei. Amazingly, the last of these has been substantially reduced from its original scope. I expect to be driving through all 3 next year as well.         It’s interesting that about 10.5 per cent of the people of Honolulu are Polynesian (perhaps a few are Micronesian). That would be about 84,000 Polynesians on 2019 figures.
        
        About 181,000 Aucklanders identify as Maori and about 233,00 Aucklanders are non-Maori Polynesians, accoding to the 2018 census.
        
        With about 413,764 Polynesians, Auckland has the biggest Polynesian population of any city.

  As far as I’m concerned, they can have all the free transport they like, but don’t expect me to pay for it. Likewise, they can do whatever and pay whatever to change the climate but don’t expect me to fund any of it.

Stolen from my favourite Blog and I feel no shame for doing so:
I’m continually amused by those who claim evidence of climate change every time there is a storm, an earthquake, a drought, a bush fire, a flood, or anything else for that matter. What rubbish. During my sixty seven years on this planet I have experienced all of the above and I don’t believe the frequency of these natural events has changed at all. What has changed is claiming that computer modeling and projections can provide us with unquestionable facts that the earth is becoming warmer, the sea is rising, and we are all doomed unless we become socialist.
With this in mind, I tested the accuracy of computer modeling and projections.
After mowing the lawns yesterday afternoon, my pulse was racing at 120 beats per minute. An hour later it was down to 97. Watching TV on my lazyboy it dropped to 80, by bedtime it was 65. I fed all this scientific information into my computer to find out at what time I could expect my pulse to zero out. Apparently at 6.30am today! Can’t argue with that, I thought. If this model is used by climate scientists it has to be 100% factual. How disappointed I was to be proven wrong. At 6.30 this morning my pulse was 74 but that’s not to say my computer modeling is flawed. I will zero out one day which proves beyond doubt that the computer was accurate in its prediction, just a little off in its projection. And that is what these idiots feed to us as undisputed evidence of climate change.

I did physics in the 3rd form and after a morning of doing my own research and reading the real experts (one of whom is a very knowledgeable chemistry teacher who has written about this a lot and who even has their own blog on it), I know more about this now than what these two ‘experts’ do!     It’s not really a case of “gone are the days” when Islamic attacks occurred, it’s a case of “gone are the days” when they are widely reported.
    
    It’s notable how, as soon as Trump was elected in 2016, Islamic attacks became passé and we saw an increase in the media of White men committing attacks, presumably because covering these attacks and linking them to Trump was politically expedient.     A lot of it comes down to perspective: a White guy commits a large scale killing, and it is all over the news for weeks. Gun control and internet censorship are proposed. A non-White or a Muslim commits a large scale killing, and it is either ignored or brushed over lightly and attributed to “mental illness.” Often (see for instance the recent NY subway incident) an event will be initially covered in anticipation of the perpetrator being White, but is quickly dropped and buried when they turn out to be a POC, even if, in this NY case, the shooter had a YT channel where he ranted about his hatred against Whites. The narrative is “White supremacist terror” so when the facts don’t fit the narrative, the media will not talk about it. The effect is false public perception of reality.

For those following the Ukraine War, the long-independent, English-language Moscow Times is an interesting source.

It’s maintaining a neutral stance on coverage, for example, matching a report on a breakaway slice of Georgia to vote on becoming part of Russia with a report of Georgians fighting against Russians in Ukraine.

There’s a report of an anti-war photographer, Danila Tkachenko, fleeing Russia after the thwarting of his plan of to fill the sky above Red Square with blue and yellow smoke during the Victory Day parade last Monday.

The FSB (the successor to the KGB) discovered the artist had bought 130 blue and yellow smoke grenades and installed them in an apartment building near the parade.

Tkachenko, the protester, previously has won a World Press Photo contest.

He is likely of Ukrainian descent. In Ukrainian names, the suffix “-enko”, represents “son of,” just as “Mac, Mc, and O” do in Scots and Irish surnames.

Jabscinda I can understand as she wants to sneak out the country and sign it without our knowledge, but what about the Blob? Has he even mentioned it? Is he unaware of it or does he agree with signing it without our consent? What about the leader of our most libertarian party? Or is the stripping us of our freedom and handing it to a group of unelected persons okay with him? All I am left to say is not one of our politicians have the intellectual capacity to work out exactly where this is going to go. In my dotage I will not comply, I will become ungovernable, I will resist their every move and I will do my best to expose their lies. This is the hill to die on.

More spin-0ff problems are likely from the campaign against the Gloriavale cult”s businesses.

Stuff reports the Westland Dairy Company is looking at legal ways to stop collecting the cult’s milk, and the group that controls manuka honey medicinal standards is looking at cancelling certification of Gloriavale.

If it’s because of use of child labour, the bans could, in equality, be extended to family dairy farms where non-adult family members work and similarly with apiarists.

Westland Dairy, the milk buyer, is owned by Westland Dairy, owned by the Yili Group, of China, a country which has more severe problems of child labour than New Zealand. Chinese industreis affected range widely, from coal and bricks to clothing manufacture.

I’ve just seen this incredible claim in some article about today’s cases in the Herald…
“we know that mask use halves the risk of spread of Covid-19”
Apart from Hipkins’ claim that masks make a “massive difference”, the only thing I’ve ever heard of about how effective masks are is from studies that determined they were next to useless (e.g. the Danish one, some other one about some schools in the US).
I’d love to hear about how we know masks halve the rate of spread. Until then, I think I’ll call BS on that claim.

Just watched the Kris Faafoi interview. Jack gave him a very soft gumming, with Faafoi having the complete wood on Tame whether you agree with his message or not. The interview was in complete contrast to his recent interview of Luxon. Was like a couple of old buddy journo’s having a fireside chat. It’s going to be great to do the comparison with the interviews of new Ministers and the incoming PM post the election next year.

Things that make me go hmmm (Vol 273):

Case #1: A gunman enters a supermarket in Buffalo and starts shooting, another mass shooting tragedy in the US. The neighbourhood is described being “predominantly black” and of the 13 victims (3 survived), 11 were black and 2 were white. The gunman is white.

Authorities instantly described it as “racially motived violent extremism”. ““This was pure evil. It was straight up racially motivated hate crime from somebody outside of our community, outside of the City of Good neighbours… coming into our community and trying to inflict that evil upon us,” Garcia said.

Case 2#: In the same article linked to above, there’s reference to a similar attack in March last year, in Boulder, Colorado, another shooting tragedy that also claimed 10 lives.

“The shooting came little more than a year after a March 2021 attack at a King Soopers grocery in Boulder, Colorado, that killed 10 people. Investigators have not released any information about why they believe the man charged in that attack targeted the supermarket.”

That attacker, originally labelled a “white male” by Police was in fact a 21-year-old Syrian refugee, Ahmad Al Aliwi Al-Issa, someone very much not white. To this day, the authorities have no idea whatsoever why he would attack and shoot 10 white people, but minutes after attending a near-identical event a year later (and after doubtless verifying the gunman was actually white) they know with 100% accuracy and certainty it was a “racially-motivated hate crime.”

Hmmm….

  I don’t know, but I’d have thought more info about Ahmad Al Aliwi Al-Issa will not emerge until his trial, whenever that’s going to be. A month ago he was adjudged mentally incompetent to stand trial.
  There’s plenty of speculation why he acted.

    It also seems that your assertion that Syrians are legally considered white is a crock, at least to those that enforce the law:

How ‘disagreement’ became ‘misinformation’

Sceptics mostly attribute this new support for censorship to bad faith. I prefer a more charitable explanation. The new censors sincerely mistake their own interpretations of the facts for the facts themselves. Their opinions, filtered unconsciously through biases and experience, are, to them, simply information. Their views aren’t ‘views’ at all but raw data. Competing interpretations of the facts can be only one thing: misinformation. Or, if it’s deliberate, disinformation.

It is in many ways a strange outcome. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, academic philosophies associated with ‘postmodernism’ coursed through American higher education. They held that there was no objectively knowable truth, only subjective interpretation. As if to demonstrate postmodernism’s total impracticality, yesterday’s straight-A college students have now retreated into a risibly facile non-philosophy in which there is no interpretation, only objective ‘fact’.

Such was the mental disposition of America’s enlightened politicos and media sophisticates when the pandemic hit in early 2020. The challenge of public policy, as they saw it, was not to find practical, broadly acceptable solutions. The challenge, rather, was to find and implement the scientifically ‘correct’ solution, the one endorsed by experts. Sound policy, for them, was a matter of gathering enough data and ‘following’ it.

But of course you can’t follow data. Data just sits there and waits to be interpreted.

When COVID-19 came ashore, the country’s political class, in thrall to the authority of public-health experts and the journalists who listen to them, was singularly ill-equipped to lead in a sensible way. What the pandemic required was not the gathering and mastery of information and the quick implementation of ‘data driven’ policy. The data was wildly elusive, changing shape from day to day and yielding no obvious interpretation. No one understood the spread of this astoundingly resilient virus, least of all the experts confidently purporting to understand it. There was, in fact, no clinically correct response.

  Nothing indicates having lost an argument, or even the absence of one, like censoring opposing views. It’s an admission of defeat. You’d think that, given the number and extent of the requirements and impositions on the public in the name of Covid, there would be a very robust argument supporting them. Taken in complete isolation, the very fact of censorship entails that the argument is weak and the opposition to it is very strong. If an argument cannot withstanding criticism, then it’s not a good argument.

  The reason for the absence of an apology for dismal policies is not just foolish pride, according to the writer, as follows:

  They believed that credentials and consensus are sure guides to truth. This mindset didn’t consider the costs as well as the benefits, resulting in a narrow array of costly prescriptions.

The WHO pandemic response “handbook” as at 2019 was probably a reasonable start by all accounts. For some reason that was thrown out the window and welding people into their apartment blocks was seen as something to emulate to varying degrees, along with curfews and mandates for prototype vaccines. As has been said after various horrible plane crashes, “something went wrong”!

I thought that was a bit strong. Personally I am not a god botherer but Chris seems to get it out of his politics.

I commented to the moderator that Stuff was showing its colours letting that thru.

Just had a “supervised” RAT in a chemist in Aussie so I can fly home tomorrow.

Very lovely young Polish pharmacist … “this is such a waste of time” …. did the test in a private room…I put my phone on for the 15 minutes…she went about her other work…. I told her time was up in 15 minutes…she gave me the form all filled in.

She never went back to check the test ! 🙂
