  If “we” are so sure of the harms tobacco causes why have we not simply made it illegal already?

  This was just so, so preventable.
  
  If Mahuta was astute, back in 2020 or before, Mahuta should have got the family around and said “Right, we’re about to kick off 3 Waters, He Puapua, the changes to local democracy etc and we can’t afford the merest whiff of scandal. The stakes are too high. None of you can apply to do any sort of work in any area of Government I have the slightest interest in. Ply your trade somewhere else in government or, even more preferably, stick exclusively to the private sector…..”
  
  But did she? No.
  
  Knowing NZers and the opposition parties would be on the lookout for any sniff of wrongdoing, what did the Mahuta family do? They actively sought and applied to do work in the very areas their wife/sister/aunt was responsible for!
  
  And repeatedly! Knowing it would look bad and reflect badly on Mahuta!
  
  What does this say about them? Are they so up themselves that they just don’t care how things look? Do they think themselves untouchable? Are they so reckless that, for a few tens of thousands of dollars, they are happy to see this so-called wonderful move for Maori jeopardised and potentially threatened by a corruption scandal?
  
  Have they just not given this any thought?
  
  Or, are they so craven that they just didn’t give a fuck? That this, using family connections to enrich themselves, is just so normal to them.
  
  I’m just so stunned at the brazenness of it all. The lack of sophistication.

    Well put. You’re dead right about what an honest approach that puts NZ / Maori interests ahead of the Mahuta family, but that’s not the game is it? Makes me laugh the accusations levelled at the Pakeha settlers and “colonialism”. The elephant is much closer to home, in the room even – tribal elites that have siphoned off “Iwi money” in industrial quantities. The type of money and privilege the average non-Maori could only dream about.

Even with deaths attributed to Covid-19 removed, excess deaths are being logged in most western countries when using a pre-Covid baseline. What is killing more people today in a statistically significant manner?

This researcher has taken public data from the UK, and from Denmark and despite relatively different Covid non-pharmaceutical responses has established a comparable excess death rates relative to ‘vaccination’ rates. Refer Further Evidence That Covid Vaccines May Be Fatal for One in Every 4,000 Doses.

Of course it is likely that some excess deaths are due to lockdowns and other damaging state-mandated interventions, so this may distribute the blame somewhat. Even so this excess death outcome is an emerging and consistent theme. It is something that our authorities must confront, more so if individual leaders are keen to avoid the stand in any Nuremberg 2.0.

      It was reported his morning that she had planned to take a commercial flight back to NZ before she left. If so, why the eff did she take the RNZAF Aircraft to the US? It would have involved less costs to take commercial flights both ways and including travel within the US.

        The RNZAF fly old aircraft because they do not have enough funding from government to replace the planes.
        
        It is very hard to get spare parts for 757 jets nowadays, and the government does not plan to replace them soon.

  Correlation does not mean causation. There are other reasons, such as health systems swamped with covid cases not being able to treat anyone sufficiently.   All is not going well for the CCP in the Pacific. Some of the countries are pushing back and refusing to sign up to parts of the agreements. I suspect the US has reminded the leaders that when Uncle Sam is displeased they and their citizens may suffer. Like subtle hints about the CIA and regime change.
  This is good new for Aus and NZ. Both governments have been asleep at the wheel over this issue and have just woken up.

    Who can remember our Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta giving her allegorical 2021 speech about the taniwha and the dragon at an event hosted by the NZ China Council?
    It was designed to showcase New Zealand’s fresh approach to international diplomacy with China. At the time, it sounded a bit weird but the media shrugged it off.
    The minister asked us to believe that the taniwha is endemic to Aotearoa but can trace its lineage across the Pacific. Protectors apparently, holding dominion over seas, lands and territories. Well this guardian is sadly missing in action as the dragon flies above the Solomon Islands and Samoa.

The current polling is a disaster for NZ. No doubt National will limp over the line and Luxon will be the next non-Labo PM, But given the state of NZ if National were a genuine opposition to Labo they should be crushing Labo in the polls.

Housing, crime, jerry build over regulation, misallocation of resources due to government pricing, left wing run government departments, failing infrastructure, over taxation, cost of basics like food & energy, race-based land grabs, increasing poverty of the most vulnerable, disfunctional expensive unaccountable councils, failing monetary policy etc etc Then there are major issues around how to handle a changing China / US political dynamic in the Pacific.

Instead National seem to be content to tinker around the edges and snipe at Labo. When by now National should be crushing Labo. National offer no reforms, solutions or any way to reverse the steady decline. Hence the polling and the massive numbers of New Zealanders who will leave the country.

NZ lacks media commentators/writers who have business experience or real understanding of the issues. Today’s Ferald claims the Reserve Bank surprised them by raising the OCR more than expected and includes a soft piece by the Bank’s economist explaining away their sloppy management.

The Reserve Bank dropped the ball and is a willing partner with our big spending government in allowing inflation to get out of control. Offshore influences are involved but poor management is very much part of the problem. Lets have some accuracy and depth in reporting.

    Supply and demand determines the price of the NZ dollar against a representative basket of goods. The Reserve Bank control the supply so the Bank determines the price.
    
    Moreover, this fact is represented in the governing legislation and the Bank’s agreement with the Finance Minister.
    
    The failure is entirely internal.
    
    I understand the politics but the economics is clear cut.

        Economics is very clear cut. Politics never is unless economics is applied to it! All we need is the observation that people make choices, the rest follows.
        
        If people make choices, then incentives matter and if they matter, then supply and demand. (Supply is just a reverse demand curve.). From supply and demand we can derive monetary theory which is happily – – but as we are witnessing, tragically – – borne out by experience.
        
        The power hungry and those hoping for a free lunch like to believe free wealth exists and, indeed, that like fiat money it can be printed. They put their lust for power and their fantasy beyond the reach of logic and experience.
        
        And when confronted with logic and experience, feign wisdom by suggesting logic and experience are simplistic and that the world is more complicated.

    Yes MMA, and most govts in democracies around the world have lamely walked into the same blind alley while pouring petrol on the bonfire of economic recession.
    
    Each one locked down their economies on more than 1 occassion during the past 3 years;
    Each one willing handed over large sums of money to multinational pharmaceutical companies;
    Each one printed money;
    Each one is using further stimulus to kick start their economies;
    Each one has had a part to play in the growth of the autocracy that is Putin’s Russia;
    Not one of the said governments and leaders of government have a clue as to how their respective economies work!
    
    So, as usual it is easy for clueless politicians to blame it on external factors as though they didn’t have a part to play in what was causing the economic head winds that each country is now facing!

    Yeah Mike, its all external forces. Thats why the countries that went crazy with money printing and spending (NZ, USA, UK etc) are having the biggest problems while those that did lower QE have more moderate inflation.

      I agree. The Boeing 757s are ex commercial airliners, manufactured in 1993, so coming up to 30 years old. I have no doubt that the RNZAF maintains them well, but they can’t work miracles.
      
      The problem is that apart from buying second hand kit, the RNZAF has so few planes that it needs the 757 to do multiple roles. It is far from ideal VIP transport. It is too big, uses lots of fuel and has insufficient range for flying to the USA and Europe.
      
      In contrast the RAAF has the 737 BBJ. A specialised VIP transport with 11,000 km range.

    I was on a trade mission with Mike Moore in Eastern Europe back 30 years ago or so on the RNZAF Boeing 727 when it broke down. We hired a mothballed Russian built plane from LOT – the Polish airline.
    
    The darn thing’s engines wouldnt start and after lots of breath holding, smoke, loud banging and delays we managed to get airborne. There was no lining on the cabin walls, some seats were not locked into position. Never been so happy to get back on mother earth.

  On one hand they actively campaign for and deliver large pots of ‘aid’ money to Pacific nations (thereby hoping for increased political support at home) while on the other hand deny there is any downside whatsoever for the frequent and large increases in the minimum wage in NZ.
  
  So why the ‘aid’ money? If, as they say, raising the minimum wage has no downsides why don’t we just tell Pacific nations to triple or quadruple their minimum wage rates and they will be wealthy just like us, overnight. With no downside.
  
  NZ can win too as we can then dispense with the Pacific aid budget altogether – there would be no need for it.
  
  Of course, I don’t need to spell out to smart KBers why Labour MPs won’t take this course of action……

  In the interview he did not refer to the people involved in the shootings as “gangs” , they were “warring groups” or just “groups” .
  
  He did sound tough though when the register was brought up.
  
  It’s really important to hold license holders to account if they sell guns to the “gangs” . Here the word is invoked . And yes the police will go after those license holders and hold them to account ,no mealy mouthed stuff there.

Deep breath…let me make it clear that I don’t think the behaviour (as reported) of the short lived TVNZ Breakfast host is acceptable; no woman should be subjected to unwanted kissing or grabbing.

But does anyone else think the story is being somewhat…pumped? Is saying ” there’s no hotter combination than white blouse and black skirt, and you really make it work” ” Openly objectifying the appearance of the recipient..”? Really? I would have said its a rather corny approach which most sensible women would simply delete, after replying “fuck off Santamaria”

  I think it is a massive pile in from all other media who are taking the opportunity provided by the outrage created by Santamaria’s alleged behaviour.
  It also creates a smoke-screen for other things, such as why a person with serious mental health issues was allowed recently to wander around Mt Albert, why the police are powerless to deal with the scroats doing ram raids, or the gang warfare for that matter, etc etc etc.

  One has to ask if TVNZ was really particularly wise to go down this path now it looks like it is on the path of a character assassination.
  Sure it looks to be inappropriate behaviour, but you would think it is something a couple of adults can move past without it being some sort of national story.
  Everyone has heard the rumours about the incestuous nature of staff that work at TVNZ – hell even their ‘me too’ reporter was licking carpet under the nose of her husband at the time.
  An organisation once worth $2 billion is now worth nothing, indeed costing the taxpayer money.

30 million as opposed to ( Last Count) 1.3 billion supporting foreign airlines to fly to NZ during Covid.
Minister for Transport should of supported this iniative when it became immediately obvious 2 years ago.

Although positive for NZ I feel too little too late but hopefully give NZ some certainty in getting goods to market after collapse of Supply chains.

At a rough guess, I would say 2 feeder Containerships ( Small), One Bulker and at least one Product Tanker ?

What NZ really needs is a high class Maritime Training college that works outside of political interference and indoctrination etc.

Their own insistence on inalienable communal land ownership is a huge deadweight impediment to Maori economic progress.

It’s very well understood that communal ownership discourages and stifles enterprise and development. There must be economists in the public service who understand this.

Shouldn’t they be explaining it, and helping Maori to move on to an approach which will better enable them to help themselves, rather than enabling and assisting them to remain in self-imposed stagnation?

This woman suffers several chronic illnesses, “including chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, endometriosis, anxiety and depression.” She is also the sole parent of a son who’s father “isn’t around”. She has kept him away from school all year, fearing he could bring Covid home and make her sick. For the same reason they no longer go out.

She describes feeling abandoned, isolated and struggling mentally. People say they care, but then won’t wear masks. Her simple message: “We are all still each other’s responsibilities and it’s just been put on us who are disabled and we still need help. We are working very hard every day to keep ourselves safe so please just continue to look after us.”

There is, of course, no information about how she has ended up so alone – apparently no family, friends and a father not willing/able/aware to step up and care for his own son. I’m guessing her various illnesses have played a part in her social isolation.

On the one hand, it’s a very sad story. But on the other, it seems to miss the part where everyone else has taken responsibility for her, providing everything for her and her son, from a home and food to healthcare and education. Those who work to provide for her need to look after themselves too – and that means they have to allowed to move on from living in crisis. Humans just can’t do that forever.

If masks work (they don’t), then, if you have an assembly in which one or more people are unmasked while one is masked, then the masked person should be fine, shouldn’t they? Like vaccine recipients, and to the extent that either is effective (they aren’t), the wearing of a mask is only relevant to its wearer, nobody else.

I watched a Canadian duo test drive a 2004 Toyota Century V12 on YouTube and was unaware this company made such a vehicle. It surpasses even Lexus in build quality and the paint finish was completed by highly qualified technicians. All electrical interior gadgets worked perfectly with none of the usual faults a vehicle of this age would display, especially if European. Anyway Toyota have released an updated model range.

Ardern is fully vaccinated and recently recovered from the virus before leaving New Zealand, so is theoretically immune to serious illness herself from contracting covid, or developing a heavy viral load to pass on to anyone else, but the question is still whether such a condition of artificial and natural anti-body protection stops her from being a carrier, from one infected person in her team to the President of the United States.
Will this perhaps be the ultimate test of “herd immunity”?

And after the Harvard audience applauded Ardern’s gun policy (despite Auckland drive-by shootings), her remarks on democracy (despite her “co-governance” wedge), Jacinda’s rainbow deputy and people, and her having a sip of water, would the same audience turn on her in an instant if she passed covid to their ageing (and likely co-morbidic) President?

Will Jacinda return to Aotearoa leaving behind a broken-down plane and a wrecked international reputation on covid protocols?

I know it’s probably ‘old-hat’ these days…but we were watching a doco on ‘History’ recently about 911.
They showed a slo-mo vid taken by a member-of-the-public just as the plane hit the Tower.

Question is….how on earth did the wings cleanly slice thru the side of a concrete steel-reinforced building and not fall off – and even the fuselage remained intact?
Even my partner commented that he’d expect to see some sort of crushing inertia.

    Until he revealed the secret to my partner…..you put the hottie in a microwave for 5 minutes the day before. That denatures the rubber to such an extent it’s easy as inflating a balloon.

  The velocity of a jet powered plane of massive size, structurally strong such as wing must be, along the thin leading edge, into concrete and glass, notwithstanding any steel work at right angles to that leading edge – striking in a building of such height that flexible material/design was built into the structure by necessity.
  Not that hard to accept video image of a wing on a passenger jet at speed would cut into, and the mass carry well in to, a building it struck?
  
  Like Flight 93 which hit the ground at a dive when passengers fought back against the jihadis; material actually entered the ground. There is NO large debris to see at the crash site, just a crater. (But then some fools do say that the crater is a missile strike, and it was fake too).
  
  Penetration by the plane is how the central stairs where knocked out when the material carried well inside, trapping the upper floors, and jet fuel poured down shafts and burnt people to death below.
  
  I was also watching a 9-11 docu’ recently, and turned to my wife as it showed footage of the planes hitting; a docu’ which spoke with some of the thousands of people who worked there/tens of thousands who visited daily, and I turned and said to wifey, “……Isn’t it incredible there are retards that think this is fake, and that demolition charges are what brought down the towers?”
  
  Kind of like flat earthers, or Sandy Hook deniers, such people seem to draw strength from being members of some sort of club. And the internet allows nutters to connect with ease.
  
  Best thing to do is outdo them on the Full Retard theory with something even less plausible.
  – Make an assertion that not only were the Twin Tower never knocked down by terrorists, but the-Twin-Towers-never-actually-existed-at-all!

  Plane going 8-9x the speed of a car on the motorway, nearly 100x the energy per tonne, with strong wings capable of supporting 100’s of tonnes, containing a whole lot of fuel and with engines weighing many tonnes each. Your eyeballs and experience are a terrible judge of the physics of such an impact. Impact energy involved is more akin to a fully loaded freight train. And the twin towers actually had a relatively lightweight construction relying upon steel for majority of strength rather than concrete.

  I read about a run of the mill engineer who made mega bucks by producing just such an authentic documentary.
  I’ve worked with engineers. Those buggers are trained to protect their profession.
  One engineer will proves the plane sliced through the steel columns. Another engineer will tell you the building was designed for that to happen . . . . .

    At the speed the plane was travelling, the fuselage would have penetrated the external window wall and crumpled inside out of side od external cameras. Likewise, the wings would have penetrated & folded once inside the building.
    You may have seen photos of a piece of straw that had penetrated a car windscreen – toughened glass – when the car was could in a tornado or such. The straw would have hit the windscreen end first at 90 degrees – if it was at any other angle, it would have bounced off.
