Annual Awards for Kiwibloggers:

People’s Winner of the Year: The Bitch.

Bitch was once pretty much confined to K Road and kennel clubs but a new bitch has risen through the ranks over several years. Bitch tries using a pseudonym – ‘complaint’ but a bitch is a bitch. This year, bitch’s effectiveness has reached new heights. It does not matter how trivial or irrelevant, a bitch garners immediate attention on social media and has government departments and media rushing to assist. Such is the potency of the bitch, even one originating from obscurity can race around the globe. The bitch has strong support from the Human Rights Commission, Equal Pay Commissioner, Race Relations Commissioner and other government authorities. Bitch’s fan club of ‘Karens’ has exploded this year. Bitch has shown great ability to avoid fact checking, in-depth media scrutiny or serious challenge. Overall bitch has had a stellar year.

Winner of the Newbies Award The Prick.

The prick made a spectacular entrance into the limelight late in the year rising up in Parliament’s final session. Pricks have always come in various iterations and dimensions but have usually remained covered up preferring to be more of a shy ‘backroom’ player. However, the arrogant version of the prick made a dramatic insertion into prominence when the PM opened herself up for trouble albeit in her low pitched, husky style. See More was quick to stand up and articulate his point. This was no limp performance. However some younger media females found it all too hard to swallow pretending there was no clear consent. His coupling with the PM in a charitable move showed pricks have new respect and exposure. Expect to hear more from the arrogant prick next year. His resolve will be stiffened by this conquest.

Award for Making a Tit of One’s Self goes to the Udder.
Once upon a time the udder was only an item of bucolic interest in the misty Waikato valleys and the odd rural village like Morrinsville. It was the exciting young PM fresh from leading the socialist herd that brought the once inconspicuous udder into prominence. It was her “udder” rejection or occasional “udder” refude that led to the winning of this award. She milked the “udders” for all she could. Nicola Willis was herd muttering “arrogant cow” under her breath but Hansard missed it. However, breast is best so “udder” is a clear winner.

  A comment to the linked Chris Trotter article – Who decided New Zealand should be co-governed? The voters have not been asked – it was not in Labour’s mandate. How does this happen in a mature democracy?
  
  I suspect that an explanation – for this “seemingly out-of-the-blue” lurch by Labour to “co-governance” – may be the threat of the Labour Maori Caucus to walk, if Ardern doesn’t further their He Paupau expressed agenda.
  How is that for mis- and dissing-information? :o)

      Leoj, it’s often said that people tend to move from Left to Right in political beliefs as they age, and it’s often argued in the terms of a drift from “heart” to “brain” or “head”.
      
      However, this may partly be the result of changing issues, such as, and these are randomly selected: gay marriage, parents using smacking as discipline, and now climate change.
      
      It may also be the result of the long-term rise in living standards making people feel better off.

      Very unlikely.
      
      In a (say) 49, 9, 3 situation, there will be (very) formal coalition agreements between Labour and the Greens, and between Labour and Te Pāti Māori, much like the comprehensive agreement between National (44) and NZ First (17) following the 1996 general election.
      
      All three parties would likely adhere scrupulously to the agreements made, to avoid a 1998-like coalition meltdown (which surely would be more likely with a three-party coalition than with a two-party coalition), and certain subsequent electoral defeat, whether resulting from a snap-election, or at the next scheduled election.

        I was responding to your “If they sneak in next term, […].” To sneak in next term, “they”, the Greens and Te Pāti Māori must total 61 seats. I then explained to you why, if that eventuated, the Māori caucus and the Green caucus would not be “pulling all her strings.” You then respond by saying “Rubbish”, and suggesting they’ll only get a total of 50 seats.

        AND he was, to a little extent, merely doing the job for which he was already being far more than amply rewarded. I say “to a little extent” because he bears responsibility for the inflicting and the mandating of inoculation of an untested vaccine. Continuing to do so, in the face of adverse reactions and deaths – all the while overseeing the doctoring of official figures that concealed the actuality from New Zealanders.
        More appropriate would have been his being charged with the equivalent of war crimes – but just another among so many past instances where gifting a K to a Labour toadie demeans the original, intended substance of the award.

        Lockdowns were probably worth the pain in the early uncertain days of covid when mortality was uncertain. But should have been done immediately that we knew there was a problem in late January 2020 rather than late March 2020, would have reduced the lockdown to only a few weeks rather than months. The world was mostly shut-down for travel anyway so benefit of being covid free in NZ and maintaining that was useful.
        
        Quarantining was appallingly badly managed – locating it in biggest city is unbelievably dumb and led to repeated expensive outbreaks that cost billions more in lockdowns. Tents, camper vans or other quickly built accomodations in an isolated location would have been far cheaper.
        
        Utterly incredible how bad hospital capacity was managed – with a net decline in hospital and ICU capacity during the pandemic and a huge number of people who didn’t get treatment they needed.
        
        Vaccines should never have been imposed on children or young adults, and should have been rolled back to high risk only as soon as Omicron became prevalent.

      Comparisons to Nazi germany is spot on, not because it was a genocide or even close to matching the atrocities of Nazi Germany, but because the psychological, policy and propoganda techniques used to issue in authoritarianism and how society allowed it is strikingly similar.
      The propoganda aimed at turning citizens against each other, drumming up fear, labelling one group of citizens with smears and creating hate and disgust towards them, tracking and labelling your citizens movements, visible symbols in public so people know who is the target group, banning the target group of citizens from the ability to earn or work or participate in society. Segregation from shops or churches or sports groups and workplaces and even family gatherings. Running media surveys to plant the idea that the target group shouldn’t be entitled to use the public health system.

        A dear friend of mine was denied a medical exemption even though she is recovering from a severe stroke. This added to her increasing isolation and made for a very miserable time of it. Don’t ever let them forget what they put people through to prop up the pantomime and certainly don’t allow them to heap accolades on each other. Disgraceful.

      I think the key word in that sentence is “were” fully vaccinated? Though I doubt those lofty numbers were ever reached, it certainly isn’t remotely close to that now. I’d be surprised if 50% of the country is fully jabbed.

Just watching the idiot box. Item about Trump paid no Income Tax while he was POTUS. I understood he donated his Salary. I know one of the benefactors was the Veterans Association. I don’t see why you would pay Tax on a Donation.

    Trump’s personal Federal tax returns for 2016 to 2020 were released overnight our time. I understand they show no charitable donations, including any in line with him donating his Presidential salary.
    
    Separately the various Trump Organisation companies have earlier been found guilty of tax offences against NY state.
    
    And the Trump Foundation, his “charity”, was dissolved by court order in 2019 because of endemic fraud.

        Steve asked about Trump’s charitable donations. I replied that as far as I’ve seen in the media it’s reporting his charitable donations are zero. And I did see a screenshot of a page from his 2020 tax return that showed 0 in the box for charitable donations.
        
        I think releasing Trump’s tax returns is performance art rather than legislating. It’s an eye roll more than anything else.
        
        But I do think that politicians should have to make more financial disclosures than they do, and the media should do a better job of highlighting who our politicians are financially beholden too.

There will be court cases, particularly zealous Democrat prosecutors. But then they also hounded a Chicago resident in the 1930s.     My beef today is the criteria for these awards. I was asked to provide a letter in support of a Maori relative who, in my opinion is barely worthy. He scored a Queens service medal.
    I also wrote a submission for a pakeha guy in our community who has worked full time for no money for a decade on charitable work. I got nine other people to provide testimonials. He got nothing.
    My conclusion is if you are supporting a pakeha older male don’t bother with a QSM application. This government is racist.

      The whole system is rigged. Having lived under this system in the UK, OZ and NZ the awards go to people who are generally in line with the government viewpoints at the time. It was inevitable that Blomfield would be knighted and that those in the Maori and Pasifica community would be over represented the opposite occurs with the Nats. At the start of the pandemic, Jacinda stated (and I quote) “there’ll be no consequences if you don’t get vaccinated” and “there’ll be no mandates to get vaccinated”.

The reality (2022): Jacinda’s mob fire rubber bullets randomly into the NZ public/crowd of anti-mandate protesters at NZ Parliament. Another first for NZ…delivered by our kind and caring Labour government. So from Jacinda’s viewpoint: “no consequences” = rubber bullets.

For me, the most telling 2022 event was Jacinda and her Labour goons reaction to public protesters in Wellington. Jacinda’s totally transparent reaction that shows her “kindness and caring” posturing is, and has always been, a total lie.

    I was there until a few days before the end. It was clear that the police were under instructions to tighten the screws and increase physical and mental pressure on the protesters. Pathetic acts like removing portaloos, preventing access for food, destroying a hygienic and professionally installed shower and toilet block. All actions designed to cause trouble.
    There were state agitators in the crowd. They turned up in the last couple of days. This whole “riot” was a provoked and created event because in Ardern’s tiny mind, it was the only way she could end it without losing face.

If you want to give yourself the best chance in the subcontinent you need to play and BACK your SPECIALIST spinners. If anything, on a wicket like that one youre better off going in with one specialist seamer and Mitchell to bowl a few overs with the new one before you rotate your spinners. So if Phillips comes in it shouldnt be for one of the specialist spinners.

This doesn’t of course do anything to address the problem caused to motorists by the loss of the on-street spaces. There is still an overall reduction in the amount of parking space available in the city.

I’m also left wondering whether it is really appropriate for the council to be competing in a commercial environment in which they also regulate the supply side? They have it in their power, through the planning process, to prevent commercial suppliers from building new multi-storeys, or refurbishing and reopening the existing ones that were closed after the earthquake.

Shouldn’t the competition authorities be looking at this?

Yesterday evening there was a discussion on newstalkzb about the use of illegal party drugs and other addictive mind altering substances.
Some contributors said that all drugs should be legalised due to unregulated products not being scrutinised for safe and proper content.
It was because of this that many buyers got sick as they didn’t know what was in the substances they were using but took them anyway – coz being cool and getting high most important.
Then people said alcohol worse- much worse.
Perhaps those taking illegal drugs should consider that legal alcohol products are heavily regulated, monitored and taxed. The makers often take a real pride in their work and know what is contained in what they offer for sale.
Not sure that many alcohol drinkers would be prepared to buy and use a bottle that had been opened, watered down and had other unknown fillers and substances added.

      True, though the real final stop was the tiny hamlet of Kihikihi, just a couple of miles down the road on the border of the King Country, which was famously “dry” at the behest of Maori tribal leaders there.
      
      It’s the reason why not just one, but two, rather large pubs were built there. The 6pm Closing Hour “Booze Barn” writ even larger.
      
      Fun fact is that the previous owner of my farm was a WWI vet who met his English wife at The Star where she worked as a waitress, having immigrated from, of all places, her home in Oxford Circus. I can’t imagine her shock at the contrast between that and the primitive roads, farms and seemingly endless native bush of her new world.

        Regular readers may recall that I could not drive when I arrived in New Zealand. I found a great instructor and had 2 lessons per week for 26 weeks. Then had a friend let me drive his car on weekends.
        
        The 52 professional lessons made a big difference to my skills.

        I grew up on a farm. I was steering a tractor at 4 years old. Dad was on the trailer feeding out hay. There are a lot of things to drive on a farm. After the farm we moved. At 9 I was driving a Bradford van up and down the drive.
        I got my Licence in my 15th birthday. Class 5 came along when I was 22 – doing heavy boat haulage.

  We should build four lane divided highways and promote a culture of using the left lane unless overtaking. Instead we have a very limited number of passing lanes. The problem is that any old slow coach can manage to do 100 if you put a passing lane beside him. Then the first two of the ten cars he has been holding up manage to pass at 104 – because they fear being ticketed at 105. Quite righly so, we have all seen the speed cameras in the passing lanes. Frustration builds in the 8 cars that didn’t get to pass…

    The only reason I have a radar detector is to safeguard getting a ticket while overtaking. I generally overtake at 120 + to maximise the numbers of cars that can pass before the end of the passing lane. I then immediately slow back to 100.
    
    I have been saved a few times by the alarm going off because some stupid radar trap has been set up at the end of the passing lane. It is that kind of behavior that makes me lose any respect for road policing priorities.

  I would be in favor of left lane 90 right lane 110 for passing areas and have plod enforce it.

    Yesterday, there were campervans that increased their speed when it came to a passing lane 🙁 When I toured with a campervan I slowed when I came to a passing lane to make it is as easy as possible to pass me. You have to wonder whether they are stupid or vindictive.

  A family member who was involved in a RTA recently (in a minor way re traffic control)
  could not believe the impatience, complaints and abuse from the driving public who were inconvenienced by having to wait a while for the authorities to clear the area.
  Two people died in this accident. Others were injured.
  But drivers were on their way to their holiday destinations and couldn’t stand being held up………

Since “3 Waters” Entity B covers a region from Gisborne to Golden Bay, how does it set a fee for water services, and how do Councils not charge for those services, to a greater amount than you pay Entity B, because it will be a saving, won’t it, sine that is the whole idea of the co-governed catastrophe, isn’t it?

  @tavita, Cass Bay has been having issues for water quality for a while. In fact, most beaches within Lyttelton Harbour have some issues. Rivers are even worse, and there are few swimmable ones now. Water samples of Christchurch beaches and waterways are often done by Ecan (Environment Canterbury). A website that gives reasonably up-to-date info on water quality is Land, Air, Water Aotearoa (www.lawa.org.nz), which has been around for quite a while, and as far as I know is not tied into 3 Waters, although may well fall within that scope over time as the stranglehold progresses.
