      If they were genuine in their claim of preventing privatising water , they’d leave it in Council ownership, as I understand under local Government act, they can’t privatise it. It’s only an issue because Government are stealing the water from the owners.
      Also the Government have pushed the line that local bodies will retain ownership of the water. If that was true then for reasons above , that couldn’t happen.

      It’s about Maori ownership of water. When Maori own it, they can lease out the infrastructure to whoever is stupid enough to lease it. That way, Maori don’t have to pay for repairs and updates to infrastructure plus they get a return from the lease arrangements and, not only but also, they can dictate how much water costs and get another return on its consumption. They can’t lose, especially when it can’t be privatised (owned by someone else). Maori will own water and its infrastructure in perpetuity.

    Slowly, the press gallery has been unpicking what lies behind the blame-shifting over this constitutional travesty.
    Mahuta has now made it clear to journalists that the issue was discussed at a prior Labour Party caucus meeting.
    And it now appears that Ardern was present when the entrenchment clause was discussed — although she has previously said it was not necessarily something she would be aware of.
    Mahuta can hold on to that particular ministerial warrant for now.

A group of scientists are saying the intense political debate surrounding the Three Waters legislation has “drowned out” discussions about the urgent need for safe drinking water.
The legislation was introduced after the Havelock North disaster in 2016 when 8000 people became sick, and eight died because of contaminated drinking water – out-of-date water infrastructure played a major part in the crisis.

It seems, from the media coverage, that the “group of scientists” is unaware of that Taumata Arowai was fully established last November 15, 2021, so have existed for just over one year.

Taumata Arowai, although being one of the few policies this Ardern Labour Government has actually delivered, was established with little fanfare, least it detract from the Havelock North argument for ‘3 Waters” – as this very scientists’ group proves!

Taumata Arowai is supposed to command the water purity the ecientists bemoan has been overlooked, but It is the first key pou, or pillar, of the Government’s Three Waters Reform Programme

  The issue with the whole 3 Waters superstructure is that most of it currently as set up is a cost on the economy with no discernable benefit to the citizens of New Zealand. Like most of the efforts to build a parallel gevernance structure for everything in NZ it will add cost and no benefit.

      It’s an interesting concept “privitisation” of core public services, and by that I mean water, power, transport (rail/bus). The public in many countries are sold the idea by governments as a way to raise money to pay for infrastructure or to retire debt which sounds laudable in the short term. However what eventuates for the majority of people is a service/asset that has to provide return/dividends for the “owners/shareholders”. History has shown that in many countries these services are cash cows for the owners/shareholders who take money out but have no real interest in the long term management of the asset/service. The cost to the public of using these services rises to continue to provide return. Had the services remained in the hands of the public service/government would the public have been better off. This is a dribbly anti privitisation rant but the way the world in evolving today maybe that would have been a better option. As people in many countries struggle with the costs of electricity, food and travel many governments are pouring money into the pockets of low income workers (WFF, fuel subsidies, school lunches) because they can’t afford the basic necessities of life. Maybe if many of these services had remained in public hands governments would have been better able to control the costs.

  3/5 waters is NOT about safety of the water. That is just the spin to ease the way for the legislation. Don’t forget it. The legislation is about asset stripping from councils for the benefit of Maori elite.

    To which one could add that 80% of NZ public drinking water supplies meet all three biological and chemical tests of water purity, and 95% + meet one or more of the three tests; as Bob @ 10.19 points out, the deaths were the result of operator error.
    
    Yet supporters of the change insist on citing the high-end (30,000+) of a very wide-ranging (so uncertain, then) estimate of potential annual illnesses from poor water quality to justify a massive, centralised, rather than a targeted solution to what is not a major problem.

  NZF is currently polling around 3.5%. Winston will campaign against Maorification and pick up enough votes to get over 5%. If Labour can stay around 30%/32% Greens 8%/10% Maori Party around 3% then we have the God awful prospect of a Labour/Greens/Maori/NZF Government.
  
  Winston will justify joining this evil cabal on the basis that he will stop or slow down Maorification.
  I hope I am proved wrong but alas I dont think so.

  All the financial advice was that there was no real advantage to keeping the Auckland airport shares, especially when you are deep in debt. The refusal to sell the shares (although some have been sold over the years) was because it didn’t look good to the Labour voters who don’t understand basic finances and who supported the dud mayors.
  
  Anyone with a modicum of economic sense would understand that you are going backwards holding shares that are returning 5% when you are paying 8% on your borrowings.
  
  Certainly, the economic illiterate like Len Brown and Goff would not understand this basic concept.

I did my civic duty yesterday and voted in the Hamilton West by-election yesterday. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to state who I voted for but it involved holding my nose whilst ticking the box

I still can’t understand why Act put up a candidate, and it looks like again the Greens are out-smarting the right in that regards, and that’s saying something.

  This is interesting because the local mp Teresa ngobi, who is absolutely useless has put out a Facebook post claiming she is trying to help them.
  
  But when it was a local doctor struggling to get residency, she basically told him to fuck off.
  
  Don’t get me wrong, they would both be worthy additions as residents.
  
  She literally got voted in because she is a Maori with a red sign. I haven’t seen the lights on in her “office” once in 2 years. Don’t think the lights are on period

National’s dire 2020 vote was largely a response to the factionalism and dysfunctional leadership. Todd Muller’s klutz’s coup and Jamie Lee Ross being prominent issues. The cowardance of the National caucas in not backing Bridge’s questioning of the government’s covid response being another.

  Matt Long – we can both agree that Jacinda is a prime minister that is terrible for the country. However is she inept?
  I would suggest that evaluated according to her own goals and values she is a runaway success.
  She has amassed more power to herself than any prime minister outside of wartime. She locked down the whole country and dictated what industries could operate and which had to be shut.
  
  She has grabbed control of the media in a way which I wouldn’t have thought was possible. Even now thousands of New Zealanders sincerely believe she saved us from covid.
  
  She shut down the churches, she has told them in the conversion bill what they can pray and who they can pray for. She has shut down free speech so that there is no dissent and only one opinion allowed on almost any subject.
  
  She has stealthily pushed co governance and the water will be in Maori tribal hands for the first time since 1839. She has changed the name of the country and every department and agency now has a new Maori name.
  
  You see her goal is The People’s Socialist Republic of Aotearoa. And I have to say she is making it happen. The total transformation of our nation is happening before our eyes. The real question is, do we have the courage to stop her?

  I agree. Compare this story to the stories surrounding Karel Sroubrek. Am I right in recalling that the PM had some influence in the latter case? In the case of some hardworking, tax-paying, law-abiding family, it seems that this Government’s policies don’t like them and are totally inflexible when circumstances change. Guests from Singapore arrived to stay at my home in Christchurch yesterday, having driven south from Auckland. All has gone smoothly in their travels except for their stopover in- yes, you guessed correctly- Rotorua, where they were racially abused in the street and had their car which was parked close to the police station broken into. The word will undoubtedly be getting back to Singapore that NZ is not quite the low crime country people thought it was, and that all tourists should avoid Rotorua.

  I think that tourist advice is already out there judging from some of the comments from our guests.
  
  Rotorua voted for the representation it got and those businesses were thinking short term easy money during a multi year income drought.
  
  We are seeing good numbers of tourists through our tiny place though, last month was 593 people up from just 256 in November 21, not bad for the shoulder season.

Can anyone deny, like Andrew Little does every day, that the health system is in crisis?

Grant keeps telling us the economy is fine, but the pressures on the family budget tell a vastly different story.

More and more of us are seeing the vast disconnect between our observed reality and the message from the Pollyanna Government of spin.

It’s the death throes of the current government. I dread to think how much damage they will do between now and the next election, and what it will take to fix it….

    The problem is that if you have a weapon behind the counter, then to a judge that shows premeditation.
    
    If that weapon is deadly, that premeditation can turn into a murder charge.
    
    It then doesn’t matter that the scrote came in to your store with a knife. If you take them out with your machete, then you did the killing, with a weapon you brought for that purpose.
    
    Not saying I agree, cause I don’t. But you’d have a tough argument that you feared for your life when you brought the weapon in at 7am and used it at 3pm.

  For the NZ Police, the government and the judicial system shopkeepers and many others are acceptable collateral damage.
  
  Which is to say that some of them may be badly injured or die, but that’s much better than allowing people to defend themselves in meaningful fashion – meaning with weapons that equalise the power difference. That would mean more deaths, not less, in their view.
  
  It’s also why there’s such a focus on road speeds: you’ll save more lives that way than you’ll lose with criminals attacking shops. Very utilitarian thinking.

  A friend highly recommended we do the Lake Waikeremoana walk about 5 years ago, so it had gone on the bucket list. Not anymore. So the local thugs have achieved what they wanted. Control and exclusive use of a National Park. Moreover they complain that DOCs funding to take care of the park is inadequate. Mafiaesque tones here – if you don’t pay us thugs enough protection money then we can’t protect you from the thugs. Surprise surprise the infrastructure is now being razed to the ground.
  
  Why do we not hear more about these failures in Partnership arrangements? That’s right, it would breach the terms of the PIJF.
  
  We are living through an ideological and cultural war. It is won on thoughts and ideas. Without a free, independent, balanced and critical thinking press, the battle of ideas is lost.
  
  The first thing a new government must do to turn things around is remove all provisions in public services and the job descriptions to operate to the principles of partnership under te tiriti and replace them with the requirement to operate to the principles of democracy. Equity must be replaced by equality.

  Luxon’s just marked one year in the job, and I can’t think of a single leak from the National Party caucus. It was a divided and divisive rabble until Luxon took over, so in that respect at least, he and Nicola Willis are doing a terrific job.
  
  What we need to see from early 2023 is policy being rolled out that is clearly different to Labour Party policy. There are some fantastic new candidates being chosen, with candidate selection about halfway through by the end of 2022. As Labour disintegrates into a rabble, National will look more and more like a government in waiting.

Just a casual observation but a novel word seems to have crept into the PM’s language. The word is of cause “novel”. eg
“Entrenchment is commonly understood to be a super majority, 75 per cent, what came before Parliament was a more novel approach,” she said.” [1]
What does this word “novel” she keeps using mean I wondered – so I had a look – which didn’t help really.
1) novel – a fictitious prose narrative of book length, typically representing character and action with some degree of realism.
2) novel – interestingly new or unusual [2]

Given the length of the prose which the PM seems to inevitably deliver to answer a simple question that requires only a single word response, I’m tending to think that the former definition applies – but perhaps I’m wrong as everything this PM explains seems to have a new twist that is interesting or unusual.
Oh well may as well go and dig some more weeds out of the garden on such a nice day – far more useful than trying to understand our PM’s prose!

    The Kaipara Council voted for a Māori Ward Nov 2020 by 7/0.
    Whosoever is enrolled on the Māori Parliamentary electoral roll then voted for the Māori Ward representative.
    Whether that’s democratic is up to your own interpretation.
    As it happened there was only about 40% turnout at the polls in that jurisdiction so I suppose most people couldn’t give a toss if it democratic or not.

        It does reek of a set-up to get rid of Hussey. It’s hard to believe that no-one from The Firm recognised Ngozi Fulani given her constant denigration of the royal family, specifically Charles and Camilla as Meagan’s in-laws. I see an aide has resigned. Perhaps the one who said

        The duplicity of Fulani knows no bounds. She pretends to be African, she claims to advocate for women, just not 83 yr old white ones and she’s happy to gatecrash a party held by people she has incessantly called racists, if only to record their conversations. However, the cowardice of the royal family in their haste to banish one of their most faithful servants with not even a squeak of support from any of them, all the time knowing Fulani is a complete fake, is breathtaking. Breaking News!!!

Unkind critics of Jacinda Ardern have been unfairly calling her a “dress up Prime Minister” and a “pretend leader”.

However it can now be revealed that Ms Ardern is in fact a protege who escaped from the Palmerston North Bowling Club Fancy Dress Ball Group many decades ago.

She can be seen in the second photo, first row, sitting on the last chair on the right, when she was youth-adjacent.

Since her escape in order to become “famous” and “very important” (and was thought to have said “when I do I will make those backward looking farming regions pay dearly”), after being “homeless” for a few years in Auckland Central, Ms Ardern now resides in Mount Albert.

Skilled with being a performer, Ms Ardern occasionally travels to Wellington to “dress up as Prime Minister” one or two days a week to adoring crowds.

NZ’s real Prime Minister, Grant Robertson, when asked about this by journalists (unless it is Heather du Plessis-Allan – he usually scowls her), quickly puts away what appears to be puppet strings for some unknown reason and smiles. “There is nothing to see here, time to move on”!

  Ghost, we also were a little puzzled by Bradley’s refusal especially when we heard The Beast in a final round give an answer to a question along the lines of ‘it was either xxx, or xxx’ and it was allowed. Bradley is tolerant of Scottish or Irish contestants’ answers which at times are almost impossible to interpret. We do of course sometimes say ‘Jacinta’ as a demeaning name.

  Cindy’s full name could be Jacinta. Since she can’t pronounce the letter “t”, and she probably can’t spell, we would never know this.
  
  Irrespectively, the correct answer to the question was clearly “Cindy Ardern”.
  
  If you were asked a question about Robert Zimmerman, and you answered “Bob Dylan”, you would be correct. If someone’s name is Frederick, you could shorten it to Fred. And so it goes on…
  
  Referring to Ms Ardern as Cindy removes any ambiguity.

        BY – life was made hard here for early Chinese migrants. Poll tax making it very hard for families to come and settle. Something like 2 women to 9000 men in the late 19th century. Our government apologised for the Poll Tax but it doesn’t change the past.
        
        In my area the school has more Chinese than European NZers. Generally they over achieve. Communication isn’t always easy, but I admire the high value placed on family, industriousness, and education.
        
        Many other NZers would do well to ask why Chinese people generally do very well here.

    This isnt a race issue, it’s more of a big city issue. There have been a number of psychology experiments done where someone feigns a medical emergency and they observe what passers by do. Typically the bigger the city the more likely people are to just pass on by.
    
    China being such a populous country is likely to have more large cities and therefore more of this sort of behaviour. But it happens in Western cities too.
    
    We are lucky to live in a smaller country where there is still a sense of community. Nice to see the people of Ellerslie stepping in when the jewellers got burgled.

“I actually believe it is possible to survive in politics without lying” (Cindy Ardern).

Perhaps this statement was simply word games, and was meant to be just hypothetical in nature, because all we have heard from Cindy over the past week has been an orchestrated litany of lies.

Entrenchment of three waters was “not necessarily something I would be aware of”. Cindy was aware of it, but perhaps it was possible hypothetically that she could have been unaware of it, even though she wasn’t in fact unaware? More word games? Strike one.

On the subject of five waters, Cindy claimed that the legislation adding coastal and geothermal water “does not change its scope.” This was an out and out lie. Strike two.

Cindy also claimed that there was a “global shortage” of fog cannons, meaning a delay in the rollout. This was fact checked, and shown to be another lie. Strike three.

I think Cindy is a compulsive liar. She is a fake, a phoney and a fraud.

What is particularly galling about all of this is that Cindy holds herself out as some sort of Messiah. Fake! False!

I have come to the conclusion that Cindy is simply evil. Pure, concentrated, unmitigated evil.

    “Let’s do this” – meanwhile no targets achieved for house building, tree planting etc

Next there will be taxpayer handouts to gangs for remedial reading and writing courses.
