The PM said she wanted to end homelessness. Since she took office the number of people assessed as being in urgent need of housing has increased by a massive 512%.

  There are employees who take responsibility for any failures, create/adjust plans to resolve the cause, and then execute them. These are the valuable employees.
  
  Then there are employees who cover-up, blame others, and can’t be found when the brown stuff hits the rotating air distributor. Show them the door.

  There’s a simpler answer…..
  In NZ around 280,000 low income people rent. Of these approximately 210,000 rent from the private sector and 70,000 from the state.
  So if you scare 10% of private sector landlords out of the market, the state sector has to find another 21,000 accommodation units, ie it needs to go up from 70,000 to 91,000,
  Even Helen (eventually) understood this
  But just look at the measures this Government has taken to scare private sector landlords away……..

Where is John Campbell on this? When the Nats were in power and homelessness was around 4,000, we had Campbell’s face dancing across the screen weeping hubristic tears of empathy.

So, if you can bring yourself to reading a blog such as this John, is it only a problem when we have a responsible, adult, government in control?

  Mr Campbell was really concerned about people and especially children, living in cars. Been a good while since even a passing mention of these households, so does that mean they are no longer in cars? Maybe in nice, warm and cheap ‘transitional’ housing. Just how ‘transitional’ is it really with 27,234 households on the social housing waiting list. Emphasis on ‘waiting’?
  
  Meanwhile more than enough rental vacancies advertised every day to house all those in motels etc.
  
  Also meanwhile, the current government has increased rental costs, compliance, risks and complexities bigly. The risks mean landlords are seriously picky these days, some selling up and importantly not buying new builds. The complexities and risks often mean an extra 10% or more on the rent to pay for property managers.
  
  The number of new builds advertised on Trademe up nearly 70% this year so far. Where are the buyers, and more importantly, how desperate are developers?

  I understand your reasoning, but I have to say … I’m not missing John Campbell’s absence from our TV screens at all.
  
  In early April it was announced that he was leaving “Breakfast” to be TVNZ’s chief correspondent. It was ~~threatened~~ announced that he would be telling stories across TVNZ’s news and current affairs shows, on television and digital. As SWMBO insists on watching One News at Six, I have been living in dread of seeing Campbell fronting the news – he’s appeared several times previously, and seems utterly incapable of understanding that a news presenter should be restrained and under-stated. He waves his hands around and seems to regress back to when he was fronting Campbell Live.
  
  So I have been quite relieved that so far I haven’t seen him once.

In late 2017, the Housing Minister Phil Twyford stood in the House, and boldly stated that in six months time, Labour wouldn’t be spending $80,000 per day to house people in motels.

That’s one promise Twyford kept. Six months later the spend had grown to well over $80,000 per day, and now it’s somewhere in the region of $1.1 million per day. That’s quite a spectacular achievement, given in the same time period, the number of people on the state housing waiting list has grown more than fivefold.

  It is easier to comprehend how the government can be spending around $1,100,000.00 per day of taxpayer’s money on motel accommodation when you consider the fact that the government pays the motel operators up to four times the market rate for the accommodation they provide.

Why should Labour worry about them? They are unlikely to be potential National or ACT voters. Far better to concentrate on the middle ground. Put the blowtorch on the providers of emergency accommodation as Steve Chadwick’s (former Labour MP) council is doing.

Ardern does: collects inflated salary for her abilities, has mental health days off work because she isn’t up to the job (and has a boi boi, look at my boi boi!!), has other peoples money flow like water through Government Departments that achieve fuck all, takes jollies overseas to network for her next job where she will continue her history of being an abject failure and spend a chunk of her time doing repeated Womans Weekly photo shoots.

    I am ambivalent toward her as a person, as I do not know her (bar for a fleeting conversation with her years ago, before she was an MP, when I concluded she was a foolish, childlike political ideologue) but have (1) no respect for her leadership abilities (as they are limited at best), (2) Find her in her role as PM, to be consistently dishonest, (3) Believe that she is not intellectually up to the job she is in, (4) Believe that she is not mentally up to the job she is in and (5) Despise her hard left politics (particularly those of division).

    Biden made some opening comments about her leadership on climate, gun control etc. He even talked about the “Christchurch call” thing. He had cards in his hand. I doubt he knew anything about her before given those cards.
    
    Also Jacinda’s fashion sense worked again. She was wearing a dress an overcoat. It looked very odd.

    I saw the two of them sitting there clutching their preprepared and officially approved questions and answers so why travel all that way and at such expense when a Zoom Conference or series of E-mails would achieve the same or better result.
    IMO. she was invited to the US by some Shock Jock to pad out time on his TV Show so she scrambled Air Force 1.5 and took her own Cheer Squad with her.

Far more worrying is the longer term consequences of the fact that 40% of kids wag school and more are sufficiently disengaged that, overall, over 50% are effectively not going to school.

The government definition of attending school regularly is shocking in itself: attending 90% of the time is classed as regular attendance.

That means you can wag half a day a week and still be considered gold star attendance material.

That 10% allowance “… acknowledges that sometimes students are unable to attend for unavoidable reasons, such as illness.”

Rubbish! Very, very few kids are sick 10% of the time.

In my 12 years at school I missed 3 days when I broke my leg (age 6) and 1 week when I got mumps (age 17). I suspect most kids are sicker than that, but 10% of the time seems a stretch.

  I agree. When I was at school, not going would be inconceivable. I can still remember the times I was not at school. I got hepatitis when I was about 8. I broke my leg when I was a teen. Apart from that I might have had 2 or 3 days off per year with other illness.

  I have two young kids in school, years 1 and 2. I raised them in an environment where they enjoy learning. Both kids are top of their class and it is not because they are above average but because all the other kids are below. Every newsletter we get has a portion explaining the importance of attendance as so so many kids have days off for silly things. Often the neighbour’s kids are not at the bus stop because the whole family is still asleep. My kids and one other are the only ones who get homework as the school gave up because no other kids do it. I went to the school a couple of weeks ago and the teacher, who started in November, said I’m the first parent she has met since starting her job. This is a disaster in the making. The amount of teens who have dropped out of school and spend their days smoking bongs and drinking bourbon and cola is mind blowing. Life is pretty damn hard as it is but in 20 years time anyone without an education or amazing entrepreneurial skills is doomed. It amazes me that parents don’t see this. This should be classed as a national crisis. We already don’t produce enough doctors, engineers, accountants, nurses etc and its only going to get worse. This should be seen as a national security issue and treated as such. Without education our society is doomed to go down a 3rd world route real quick and were are definitely heading that way with the way things are going.

    You are right: we don’t produce enough DOCTORS. There were two news items on this in recent weeks.
    
    The first item said we have 76 GPs per 100,000 persons; Australia has 120.
    The second report gave the numbers 74 and 100, respectively.
    
    So either way we are worse than Australia; and consider this: aren’t we in second place for Obesity just below the U.S.?
    How do we expect to cope with fewer GPs that Australia?
    
    Not surprisingly, one of the interviewees said it takes 3-6 weeks to get an appointment in NZ !?!
    We need 33-50% more GPs to be on a par with across the Tasman — maybe more because I don’t believe we’re healthier as a group.

  In the last 2 years it has been quite hard for kids not to miss a few days of school. A little cough, a little sniffle or a little temp and you have to stay home until the symptoms disappear. I hope this madness will stop soon.

  Agree, but my experience with two high school boys is that the school systems are incapable of correctly monitoring attendance . My kids have near perfect attendance however get marked as not present for a single class from time to time. One of them is on 92% attendance. No neither are bunking classes:)
  
  For example, popping out for a class photo can get you as absent depending on timing/teacher.
  
  There are plenty of kids that are partially attending but that 10% covers the school/teacher failures.

Fixed quite easily, just reverse all laws bought into attack private rentals and give tenants rights to destroy properties with little to no consequences. National started it by removing depreciation and lvr.

Create an over -supply of private rentals, more and cheaper rents. It is wrong to assume a typical zero sum game that private rentals and homeowners are entirely competitive. It is two separate forms of capital to increase market supply restricted by council and govt rules.

This isn’t actually that hard a problem to solve but politicians didn’t like some people making capital gains out of the rules around building houses and the excessive money printing they did. So made problem even worse.

  The removal of cold uninsulated rental houses had the effect of removing the cheap rental market. Those rentals served a purpose. I remember going to crowded student flats for partys. They were not flash but dry and secure. My importantly they were affordable.
  
  Much more expensive rentals was always the outcome of labours rental policies. Yet renters voted in mass for Labour, attracted by the warmer dryer homes promised. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

It is such a mess it will be difficult for an incoming government to fix. The government is building and refurbishing state houses as fast as it can. The cost is enormous. If you are lucky enough to get a new one it is like winning the lottery because they are nice little houses. But this is not going to even dent the problem.

Maybe they need to tender for massive modular housing from China.

BTW back in Kàinga Ora land, my associate went to do a routine inspection yesterday. She could not get into the property. The house was surrounded by a high fence. There was also a portacom unit on the property. And two massive hostile dogs 🐶😩.

Of course you would think the police would be called and these people evicted. But no. They will be asked to explain what they have done and to remedy the situation. If they refuse a process to evict them could take several months.

  In February or so, two old but adequate buildings (4 dwellings) were demolished on 148-154 Graham’s Road in Chch. The site was cleared in March and there has been no building activity for at least 2 months.

      From Housing New Zealand Ltd’s 2021 annual report:
      
      – At June 30, 2021 Housing New Zealand liabilities included $5.49 billion in market bonds, and another $150 million in short-term “market paper”. About $1.3 billion of loans from the Government took non-current borrowing to $6.8 billion.
      
      – Housing NZ managed 65,779 rental properties at that balance date.
      
      – During the June 2021 year it received $409 million in rent from tenants and $1.034 billion in income-related rent subsidy.
      
      – In the year, $1.4 billion of cash outflow went to buying property to rent.
      
      – Maori get first rights of refusal to buy some Kainga Ora property. Where Maori have first rights of refusal over land, Housing NZ must give Maori the right to carry out development on the land or approve development by Housing NZ.

    KO is borrowing billions. They issue bonds. Marketed as wellbeing bonds. They are snapped up in minutes offshore because they pay more than government bonds.
    
    The bonds are issued by a company owned by KO. “Housing New Zealand Limited”. No mention of KO. I guess because Chinese investors would have no idea what Kàinga Ora means. 😂
