  Matt Long, totally agree. That was the business plan when Trump was president. Prime news here in NZ had at least one anti Trump news segment in every 30 minute bulletin. The New York Times massively increased its circulation by going all Trump, all the time.
  
  DPF assumes media companies want to learn and want to be more balanced. I suggest the opposite. Media companies and big tech were distraught when Trump won in 2016 and vowed to not repeat their mistake. So they systematically worked to destroy him. Trump and Russia, Hunter Biden nothing to see here, the 2020 election result was totally legit.
  
  Trump is just the most egregious example. There are many others.
  The mainstream media on most issues allow one opinion. They are leftist activists rather than objective journalists.

  To the extent that Kiwiblog has a right-wing perspective, it doesn’t represent itself as being unbiased; unlike the corporate media, which is by and large exclusively and heavily to the left, yet I have never seen nor heard any admission of this fact. As a collective, the MSM represent themselves and their opinions as being normative and simply “the way things are,” so that any view that diverges from theirs is, by their definition, problematic and beyond the pale.

  I’m sure any politician quoted in the book excerpt published today would correct any errors.
  But the title is wrong – no politicians would ever agree that their party, or government, is ‘in crisis’.

I don’t disagree with the general thrust, but many of those are over simplified click bait in their own right.

There have been good studies on algorithmic radicalisation that conclude that it’s not really happening. Slacktivism isn’t really a problem with MSM, it’s a problem with people. In fact, many of these are problems with people – that’s also why we get tabloidisation (it’s what people want).

At bottom, that’s the problem. In days gone past the media gave us what the media thought we should get, all high minded and publicly worthy. But it turns out that when people can choose their own media, they choose interminable stories about Harry and Meghan. And if we trust these people to vote, we should also trust them to choose their own media.

Ah huh. Two problems immediately spotted.
First:

Outlets will sometimes adopt the look and feel of credible news outlets without applying the same standards of quality.

What credible news outlets would these be? The ones who don’t fall prey to some/most/all of these 33 points? Is there any such outlet now. The WSJ, maybe??? Bonus laugh points if you immediately thought of the NYT or WaPo.

Second:

The media may elevate unsubstantiated ideas for the sake of argument and to avoid allegations of bias.

Climate Change anyone? Maybe in the 90’s or even the 2000’s but I can’t recall the last MSM outlet to give the time of day to any PhD-equipped scientist who questioned even a tiny piece of the story, let alone economists or engineers who pointed out the practical problems of the “solutions”. Across the Western World the MSM narrative on this is that AGW is catastrophic, that wind, solar, batteries and energy-saving home devices will save us – and shut up.

Or how about the last two years of C-19 “conspiracy theories” turning into, “Well yeah, that might be true” (but shut up about it).

No, I’m afraid this is yet another example of mainstream, status quo “thinking” that doesn’t actually get the problems even as it identifies them; It’s not us. It’s you, whoever “you” might be.

  I may have believed that once, but I have my doubts now. I’m not so sure that was ever the case. Particularly with regard to the mass-media generated Covid debacle, the last remaining scales have been removed from my eyes vis a vis a naive, pre-existing assumption that what we see and hear in the corporate media is, by and large, a fair representation of reality.
  
  On reflection, what reason is there to suggest that the contemporary fundamental role of the media as paid propagandists is only a recent development? Have they degenerated into this position over time, or is it built into the idea of mass-media?
  
  It now makes perfect sense, to one degree or another, seriously doubt nearly all of the core output of the corporate media going back to the late 19th century and beyond. It seems implausible to me that it was never hitherto conceived by the controllers of media that the instrument could be employed dishonestly and deceptively in order to cynically create and disseminate narratives that benefitted the owners of media corporations, at the expense of the consumers of “news.” Mass-media owners have had the means to do so since the beginning, so it is reasonable to suggest that they have always taken advantage of the means at their disposal.
  
  Since the advent of the printing press, it became apparent that he who controlled the output of the press, controlled what the readers thought, and therefore, how they behaved. Only a tiny fraction of what we believe about the world comes from our direct sense-experience. The vast majority of our ideas, thoughts and opinions come indirectly via pre-packaged chunks of information, parcels that have been formed with an intent of having this or that effect on the consumer as an individual, and therefore as a population of individuals. The key consideration is always: who is giving me this information; and what effect do they wish to achieve? Of course, the amount and the scope of manipulation will vary between, say, philosophical treatises, works of history, literature, sociological theories, scientific papers and so on. Generally, though, the most likely and most highly proliferated forms of information to be tainted with propagandistic aims are the easily digestible items that come via the mainstream corporate-owned media.
  
  Oftentimes, the information and concepts that we consume can be tested for validity through a process of logical and rational analysis, as well as by considering whether or not the principles and ideas involved, and specific reports of events described, comport with our own past experiences. Do my existing points of reference make this proposition plausible, or is it a wholly novel idea?
  
  Ultimately, the facts are that we rely on so much indirect information to form our worldviews, with an editorial process taking place by others, in order to self-interestedly determine what is and what isn’t an important event, and the things we should and shouldn’t concern ourselves with, and we are therefore wise to always remain sceptical and to submit our received information to tests for validity and verification.

      You are correct, except that you don’t seem to appreciate the universality of this practice. In fact, in our society, it is essential to have control of much of the media in order to perpetuate the appearance of a functioning democracy, for instance in the United States, Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The fact that you seem to distinguish between the so-called autocracies and the so-called democracies shows that the process and methods are very effective. Where do you think “your” idea that “the rulers of Russia, China, the Philippines, Hungary, Turkey” are “dictators or aspiring dictators” came from? Probably from the controlled media you consume.     Dan Rather made his name with the Kennedy assassination by turning the focus away from the actual nutbag communism of Oswald to the “frightening right-wing atmosphere” of Texas, a take that was a joke even then given it had been a solid Democrat state since the 1870’s. I was always glad he got destroyed trying to pull a similar stunt on GW Bush, with ample help in the destruction from a new media outlet called Powerline.

Hitler was different, his focus was on eliminating entire groups of people, many of whom were only guilty of the crime of being Jewish or Roma and so on. It is very interesting on how the media landscape has changed.

I think the fundamental change has happened since Journalism has become a ‘university degree’ as oposed the days when it was more like an apprenticeship.

Early journalists would come from mainly working class backgrounds, so had a enbred mistrust of politicians and those in power. They would also start at news organizations at the bottom and work their way up through doggedness and hard work. Politicians were seen as the enemy and the game of cat and mouse ensued.

Now journalists are blatantly middle-class students who after 3 years of university education come away with a degree. Who else are at these same universities? That’s right, middle-class communications and political science students.

If you’re wondering why our journalists are so left wing and support the left wing narrative it is because that’s the result of not having any working class credentials, unlike before.

So the next time you’re being your head against the wall screaming at the journalists to actually ask a left wing politicians a decent question, you have to realize that these journalists feel that they don’t need to explain anything to the public. If you were brought up in their world, what Jacinda and Robertson are doing is exactly what they’d do in the same situation, because they’ve had exactly the same life experiences, education and middle-class upbringing.

  This has affected what is evaluated as “news”.
  
  Women from the elite stratum of society often want to “fix” social problems rather than just report them.

  Journalism courses are heavily female. As DPF posted a while back, almost the entire left/right demographic divide consists of unmarried university educated women – i.e. men who go to university don’t become overly left wing, and women/men who don’t go to university aren’t overly left wing. Women who go to university are about 10 or more percentage points more left wing, and it stays that way until they get married.

There’s also this aside in a more general article about Cuba and the women who survived being tortured by the communist regime, which resulted in a suicide rate of twenty-four per thousand, double Latin America’s average, triple Cuba’s pre-Castro rate, and making Cuban women the most suicidal in the world.

How these women survived years and even decades of such horrors then “took charge of their lives” and “got their groove back,” might seem newsworthy and inspirational. Indeed their stories fairly epitomize the most popular themes of women’s chat shows. You can almost hear Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” as Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg greet these long-suffering-but somehow-surviving Cuban ladies on stage with a standing ovation, sniffles, and teary hugs.

Ha! Instead, “the national media has never shown the slightest interest in any of our stories,” shrugs Caridad Roque from Miami today. Roque was arrested by Castro’s KGB-trained police at the age of 19 and suffered 16 years of prison and torture in Cuba.

Her torturer, on the other hand, has been fawningly interviewed by feminists from Barbara Walters to Andrea Mitchell and from Maria Shriver to Oriana Fallaci. On a visit to Cuba in 2002, feminist pioneer Carole King (also at the “Women’s March”) sang Fidel Castro a personal and heartfelt “You’ve Got a Friend.”

I was appalled to find out that one of my wife’s friends, a woman I thought was pretty intelligent, basically gets all her ideas and news about the USA from the Joy & Whoopi team on The View.

    The British Empire expanded across Africa & Asia. The colonial records in both regions was nothing too flash.
    
    Since independence, the British media (with (assistance from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office) nowadays do nothing but romanticise about Africa and Asia, while ignored all but the more extreme instances of despotic failures (eg Rwanda, Ethiopia etc). So, Zimbabwe, or South Africa largely get ignored.

      Contra mm’s usual trolling the point of my comment was that quite clearly the US MSM has done precisely the opposite of fixating on Cuba, and since the 1980’s so has the Democrat Party – except when they want to extoll the Cuban healthcare system. The US Left of course always averted their eyes as they did every commie country, except when extolling just about every aspect of the dump.
      
      It was only the US Right-wing, with some minor media support from obscure magazines like National Review and company, that stuck it to Cuba post 60’s, and clearly even that is too much for some Lefties, hence the lofty, dismissive tone embedded in the word “fixation”.

    Excluding Mexico and the Bahamas, Cuba is their closest southern neighbor and is strategically placed to cause issues for the Gulf States.
    I do recall people also complaining that the US was over exercised about Venezuela’s commo dictators recently also, is it that we feel commos should be given a free pass? Che t-shirts anyone?

        Which places are worse? Columbia perhaps. Of the big countries, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico are doing OK. Not perfect, but OK.
        
        I read a great article recently (well, about a year ago) putting the position that the best thing the US could do for Mexico is to invade. Unskilled migrants from Mexico can become illegal immigrants in the USA and just the move across the border increases their average earnings by about $10K a year, even as an illegal. The US’s institutions (broken though they may be) deliver every citizen in the order of $10K more value than Mexico’s. So if the US invade Mexico and put in place US institutions instead, it would immediately make Mexico that much richer.
        
        Thought experiment only of course, since the war itself would destroy the economy.

Daniel Faitaua TV1 news reporter based in Europe has just told us that expected temperatures in UK tomorrow will melt railway lines.

If I remember my SC chemistry correctly, the melting points of steels are around 1200 – 1400 deg C.

I long thought that the entire reason that the evening news included something as boring as the weather report was to have daily content that the average joe can look out their window to verify. This builds a form of trust, albiet subtly, and helps them sell the rest of the tabloid based idiocy of the broadcast as ‘truths’. I know that is a reach, but I do know the greatest lies have confectionary sprinkles of truth on them to ‘make the medicine go down….’

Mma you are spot on. It is even more fundamental than he he who controls the printing presses.

Historically, it was he who wins the war, writes the history & with it control the media and you control the story. This is something that exercised Tony Blair & Alistair Campbell so much, that Blair & Campbell flew to Australia in January 1995 to speak with & do a deal with Rupert Murdoch. This deal remained in place until Blair stood down as PM, then the gloves were off.

However, over the Blair/Brown period & into the era of Cameron all the UK media introduce many of the 33 factors or problems we are seeing with the modern MSM.

It starts from a premise that says that the “official” media is the gatekeeper of news content – they know what’s best for you and will give you what they think you ought to have
