Thank goodness, progress at last on Ihumatao! But wait, there’s more. Much more. After 18 months, there is now most of a governance group, just needs to figure out terms of reference in the next 5 years.

Fletcher’s housing programme could have been done and dusted by now.

The governance group is unique in that other than a five-year timeline it doesn’t have a specific mandate or terms of reference – it’s for those on the group to work out.

  One way Simmonds says the housing dispute could be worked around is using land owned by Waikato-Tainui.
  “There are other lands nearby that are tribally owned that were returned in our settlement that could provide solutions in that housing area.
  
  It seems that the Ihumātao governance group – consequent of the Crown using housing money – is assigned to decide housing for that piece of land, not somewhere else.
  
  How will Te Aakitai Waiohaua – so uncomfortable with the “Crown” – be represented by the new Maori Health Authority?

  One of my bros is dealing with this daily and on a large scale.
  
  Three day hui, all taxpayer funded, tens and tens in attendance, not a thing achieved except squabbling, massive effort spent on minor and trivial matters and more hui called for.
  
  The incentives are wrong. Pay people per day/meeting and you create an incentive to stretch things out.
  
  Pay by outcome and you sharpen focus and create an achievement mindset and culture.
  
  My bro has huge fears over co-governance – he is certain it will be a recipe for poor outcomes, massively stretched timelines for achieving anything and eye-watering cost escalation.
  
  Another thing he mentioned to me last week was his belief that ‘co-governance’ will just evolve into a ‘Maori veto’, as he is witnessing now on a smaller scale, where tribes extract money and favours for themselves in return for giving their consent to initiatives.
  
  Initiatives that really they should have no more say in than the woman or man in the street.
  
  It’ll the taxpayer who will suffer and while post-career Labour MPs flit around on boards, working groups and tribal bodies, again, all taxpayer funded.

    I went to Catholic schools, primary and secondary. At the secondary school which I boarded at we had one priest who we were always wary about. Some years after I left he was charged with sexual abuse of boys. It wasn’t a Marist school either, but over the years I have heard many stories about their schools and what went on in them. The people who told me those stories are reliable witnesses. As a lay teacher you would have been unaware of what was happening unless a student specifically sought you out to discuss the matter.

    The issues with sexual abuse in Catholic institutions is presented as being a religious issue, because this is consistent with the desired narrative. However, the real issue, as is demonstrated by the many instances of sexual abuse of boys in secular institutions, is the issue of gay men sexually abusing minors – that is the essential common denominator in all instances, whereas religiosity is an accidental circumstance. This cannot be the focus though, because it draws attention to the practice of gay men abusing boys.

      A few years back a local state school in my area had a very popular teacher found guilty of sexual abuse toward students. The individual had managed to fend off accusations for some time due to being a supposed upstanding member of the local iwi. Is ethnic background responsible for this? No, just as religious affiliation is not. Sadly people were blinkered because they wanted a good role model and someone with a talent for manipulation took advantage of the community and comitted terrible crimes.

      It is very convenient to ignore the immoral actions of the Catholic Church hierarchy as they moved paedophile priests, covered up the abuse and generally tried to hide their failings as an institution. An institution who feels it is their right to decide moral issues and provide moral guidance to the adherents.

      It’s definitely not a religious issue and I would suggest that it may not be just related to gay men either but to bi and heterosexual men as well, because girls were molested as well. Whatever it is, there is absolutely no excuse for it and since I grew up in a rural area, there are some methods used on animals that can easily be used on kiddie fiddlers as well. Apparently they are illegal and some claim immoral. Bugger.

    Indeed. Predators are much more likely to find a friendly home in the long-established instutions that prize reputation over justice: religious cults, youth organisatons, prestigious schools, etc. Secular residemtial institutions, sich as prisons, hospitals, youth homes, etc are also prone to abuse, although I would argue the lack of cult-like traditions should make them somewhat safer.

1st July government announces trade agreement with the EU, that will allow our wines to be exported free of tariffs , same day excise duty increases for those in NZ. So we will now be paying an extra $2.49/bottle. BUT don’t worry in Brussels it will be cheaper to drink !!!! So when we Skál remember the government.

    As I have said before, if she cared about climate change she would not be encouraging Northern hemisphere tourists to come to New Zealand.
    
    The other thing I would note is that few tourists will come here with the current mask wearing requirements. These long haul tourists spend serious money. And they have choices.
    
    This mask thing has to go. People are free to wear masks if they choose to do so. We have a mask mandate because it is the final symbol of government control.

        A baby might be viable at 23 weeks, but the intervention required (not to mention the costs on the health budget) would be huge, and necessitate hospitalisation for many weeks. And a child that early may not have a guaranteed outcome… plenty of possibilities of long term disabilities.
        I’m not saying this would happen but the risks are certainly many.

Joe Biden when speaking to reporters talks about “aborting a child”.
Two things stand out for me. First of all the left assure us that it is not a child, it is a foetus and so it can be aborted. Joe inadvertently lets the truth come out.
Secondly he is painfully unable to cope with questions from reporters. After that statement we can hear his aides frantically shutting things down.

So how about this? There is such a thing as an unborn child and ending its life is a really big thing.
Secondly let’s believe our own eyes. Joe Biden is a very old man who is no longer fit to be president of the United States.

Equally people will state that Jacinda is a child with little real world experience and shouldn’t be PM, and in the UK Johnson who age wise sits between Jacinda and Biden isn’t exactly an exemplary statesman. Where can we get leaders that we respect and that are able to lead, too old, too young, or too narcissistic it would seem that we have a Goldilocks conundrum in many nations..

  Why not simply get a couple of people with great governance skills and combine those with the three top monetary economists in New Zealand? Or outside of New Zealand for that matter. The need for physical presence in meetings is long past.

On the front page of the Wall Street Journal web site a headline: The Proud Boys Are Terrorists, New Zealand Says.

It goes on to report on NZ designating the American far-Right group the Proud Boys as a terrorist organization, highlighting the role that the group played in last year’s attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Has anyone heard of this group being in NZ? Or is this grandstanding by the Ardernists? Keep Jacindarella in the news so she gets a UN job after she’s booted out at the next election?

There’s a rather silly article on Newsroom by a climate expert, in effect accusing the US Supreme Court of corruption. The Court has ruled that in order to restrict coal powered generation Congress must pass a law ie the executive cannot do it by fiat. We have the same system, as do most countries – it’s called democracy. Germany passed an Enabling Act in the 1930s which enabled its Chancellor – Prime Minister – to retitle himself Fuerher (sp?) which is apparently what this climate fellow would like.

  I think the wider point is that there is an extreme level of polarization in US poltics at present. This means an inability for either party to enact significant legislative change. The real power is therefore held by the unelected supreme court justices, who happen to be prepared to rule predictably amd consistently for the preferences of their party.

    I disagree with your summation milky. For the EPA case, the SCOTUS have said that it is the job of Congress / Senate to make the rules, not as a delegated authority to a government agency. Like RvW, they could have passed the laws but they didn’t.
    That is not politicisation, it is just saying the Constitution says you do things this way, so do it.

It seems the White House Press Corps have penned a letter to the White House Press Secretary complaining of “ahistoric lack of access to the President” and the imposition of requiring request forms be completed to gain entry into areas in the White House that the Press had previously been allowed by all Presidents. Apparently Biden’s admin had allowed only a limited number of reporters into the East Room and the South Court Auditorium to confront Biden, and they were chosen by the admin team. The letter goes on to say that the Corps feel that the President is limiting access to those that may ask a question that the admin do not want asked. And folks, this is the admin and now President that claimed Trump was hostile to the press!
I guess there are no surprises though, given Biden hasn’t got a clue what is going on, and like our PM, needs the questions in advance.

I want Government to interfere in my life as little as possible, while recognising that Government is necessary. I want to pay as little tax as lawfully possible, but enough to fund the things only Government can do.

I want an absolute meritocracy. Hard work, dedication and talent must always be rewarded. If you are lazy, don’t apply yourself or aren’t contributing, you don’t deserve to be rewarded as much as people who work their arse off.

I want people to be treated equally. Not as inferior OR superior. Just equal. There is no such thing as positive discrimination, just discrimination.”

  To the extent that authentically right wing personalities still exist on YT, for instance, Peterson’s videos are recommended if you start watching anything too spicy and actually right wing. The social media purge of right wing dissidents began in 2017 or thereabouts, once it became clear that this was the main threat to established power and their ideology, so the fact that its taken five years to be censored on Twitter indicates how unthreatening to the dominant ideology he is. There are many fundamental issues that he will not touch, hence he is given a pass.

  Global Times is not just connected to the CCP – it is literally a wing of the CCP. This is not a newspaper article but a press release from the CCP. So you are taking the CCP as a source – this is not an exaggeration like many here do with Radio NZ or One News. The Global Times is one of the mouth pieces of the CCP. Using them as a source as though it was providing the “full picture” or an “alternative view” is either ignorant or disingenuous.

I know we are forbidden to comment on Ardern’s clothes because she’s a woman and it’s misogyny etc (yawn) but the white dress she wore to Downing St is interesting for several reasons.
First of all, it is almost identical to one worn worn by the Duchess of Cambridge. Designed by Emilia Wickstead it costs about NZ$3000.
Did she really spend that much on 0ne dress?
Or was it a gift?
Was it an original Wickstead or a cheaper copy?
In other words, was she wearing a rip off?

Ardern usually looks as though she has rushed out the house without time to brush her hair or do more than pull on a coat. It’s an artfully dowdy look.

So this dress is a departure from frumpy PM. Some may think it looks like an old-fashioned nurse’s uniform.

I just want to know – was it an extravagance, a gift or a rip-off?

I bet no-one asks.

$3000 is a lot to spend on a dress. Especially when times are tough. I doubt she spends $50,000 a year on clothes and shoes.
I envy neither her job nor her clothes which I generally think are dowdy.
But I do question the cost, especially if it is a gift. Is it declared? If it is a rip-off then that is a whole other story.
Gifting and clothing copies are both issues of ethics.
Just because it is a dress makes the issues no different from sports tickets, cheating on expenses or telling lies.
Just because she is a woman shouldn’t stop us asking, especially as the dress is already in a Daily Mail story.

  People need to STFU about her appearance, clothes, hair, teeth, and the fact that she is a she.
  
  If we fight the fight on policy we will trash them. Jacinda got 37% in 2017 (about a 15% bump in 3 months) on the basis of being young and female. Take that away and they have nothing.

Maori names for everywhere is the same bollocks from the same people that say Maori had no concept of property before the white man came visiting.

No concept of property? Taonga was valued, therefore was important as a possession. Possessions are property. Not to mention iwi moving on in on other iwi and taking their fishing grounds, hunting grounds, gardens, women… No concept of property my arse.

Someone please tell me why some posts have a yellow background and some have a red background.

I have really tried to figure this out by looking at and the links at the bottom of the page and have not been able to figure it out.

Apparently if a post gets a number of positive clicks a yellow background appears. If a post gets a number of negative clicks a red background appears.

I have tried to correlate these phenomenon but can’t reconsile these rules.

I thought that maybe the ratio of positive likes vs the ratio of negative likes created these results but that doesn’t work either.

Please educate me.
